Hindered settling devices (teeter bed, up-current) are widely used in the mining industry to classify mineral streams into various size fractions and to separate minerals. In the coal industry these devices are extremely successful in separating coal of low densities from shale and pyrite. In the beach sand and in the iron ore industry, this equipment is used to beneficiate minerals either as stand alone units or lately as classifiers in spiral circuits. The challenge that these applications give to metallurgists is to be able to simulate the equipment by using mathematical models with or without the aid of small bench scale tests. In any green fields and many brownfields projects, limited amounts of samples make pilot plant tests difficult. Although there are mathematical approaches available, the accuracy is of such a nature that it can not be used for design purposes. This refers to the use of StrokeÆs law, NewtonÆs and the so called intermediate law as is widely published. Research done by the author indicates that in most applications none of the above laws apply. Using the original data as published by Perry and Chilton (Chemical Engineering Handbook, pp 5-64, 1973) and re-plotting it indicates that the settling velocity of particles is a function of (particle diameter)n where n varies between 1.2 and 1.6 which is different from that predicted by the intermediate law that suggests that n = 1.18. Another way of describing the relationship between the drag force and the Reynolds number is done by iterating between settling velocity and the Reynolds number. This needs more computer time but the accuracy obtained from this does add value to simulations. A small but simple test is suggested to determine the settling velocity of particles to enable metallurgists to determine variations from the theoretical calculations to determine the influence of viscosity and particle shape.

The Vienna Wood hydrothermal is hosted by mid-oceanic ridge type basalt in graben morphology and is located in the Central Manus Basin. The hydrothermal field is about 300 metres in diameter and consist of a sulphide mounds and tall huge death and active chimneys. From the three distinct ore types collected from the Vienna Wood site, the dominant ore minerals recognised are pyrite, wurtzite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, Fe-oxide and gangue minerals of anhydrite, gypsum, barite and silica. The consistencies in the paragenetic sequence and in the spatial distribution of the sulfides across the three ore types suggest that similar hydrothermal process exist across active and death chimneys. Fluid inclusion studies reveal a homogenisation temperature of 190-260¦C and an average salinity of 5.1-5.4 wt per cent NaCl equiv. The pH of the hydrothermal fluid ranges from 4.2 to 6.1. Bulk chemical analyses indicate that the mineralisation in the Vienna Wood can be classified into the Zn-(Cu-Pb) type of mineralisation. The tenors of the ore and mineral assemblage resemble those of the Mid-oceanic ridge system and ancient ophiolite hosted massive sulphide deposits of Cyprus and Oman.

This study represents a part of comprehensive research aimed at integrating nickel into a thermodynamic database constantly developed at Pyrosearch. The behaviour of Ni in calcium-ferrite slags is considered. An integrated approach combining experimental and thermodynamic modelling methods has been employed to predict phase equilibria in the NiO-CaO-FeO-Fe2O3 system under oxidising conditions and in equilibrium with the metal FeNi phase. The compositions of liquid slags and coexisting solid solutions have been determined through the analysis of equilibrated and quenched samples by electron probe microanalysis technique (EPMA). The research results are presented in the form of liquidus projections on the corresponding phase diagrams, considering both oxidising and reducing conditions. The solubility of Ni in spinel, dicalcium ferrite and calcium oxide as well as solubility of Fe and Ca in Ni monoxide, have been examined under several atmospheric conditions. Additionally, the compositions of the NiO-FeO monoxide in equilibrium with metal phase have been studied. The experimental data not only support the outcomes of thermodynamic modelling but also validate the parameters of the applied thermodynamic models, thus confirming the reliability and accuracy of the integrated approach.

Nickel-iron sulphide mineralization at Nepean, Western Australia occurs within a small Archaean greenstone outlier in granite south of the main Coolgardie greenstone belt. Individual sulphide ore bodies are situated near the foot- wall contact of simply-differentiated en echelon ultramafic sills that have intruded a sequence of sulphide-bearing metasediments and amphibo- lites. The paper describes a detailed section through the No. 2 ultramafic sill and its associated sulphide ore zone, which gave Metals Exploration N.L. the first significant nickel discovery in the Nepean area in 1968. The sill is variable in thickness up to 30 m along a strike length of 600 m, and is truncated to the north by pegmatite intrusion and pinches out to the south. The body has border zones of pyroxenetic composition, now represented by felted aggregates of chlorite and amphibole, and a central peridotitic core in which olivine and orthopyroxene are concentrated towards the base. Textures within the peridotite are dominated by large lath-shaped olivine grains and their serpentine pseudomorphs, which delineate triangular areas composed of talc, chlorite, and amphibole. Orthopyroxene occurs in large ovoid patches and is often replaced by Talc.

Organo-montmorillonites were synthesised by intercalating different amounts of dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide, cetyl trimethyl- ammonium bromide and stear trimethylammonium bromide into montmorillonite layers, and were used for the adsorption of 17b-estradiol in aqueous solution. The adsorption kinetics and thermodynamic of 17b-estradiol onto organo-montmorillonites and the effect of pH on the adsorption capacity of organo-montmorillonites for 17b-estradiol were studied. The adsorption isotherms at 20¦C, 35¦C and 50¦C were measured. Results show that organo-montmorillonite has a high affinity for 17b-estradiol. More 17b-estradiol can be adsorbed on to organo-montmorillonite and the adsorption is more rapid at a lower temperature. The montmorillonite intercalated with cetyltrimethyl- ammonium bromide with the amount equivalent to one times of its CEC has the highest adsorption capacity. For all organo-montmorillonites synthesised in this study, an optimum pH (around nine) for the adsorption of 17b-estradiol exists. Before this pH 17b-estradiol uptake increased with increasing pH. After that the 17b-estradiol uptake decreased with increasing pH. Simulation of the isotherms indicated that the adsorption of 17b-estradiol onto organo-montmorillonites is a spontaneous and exothermic process. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are the focus of current environmental concern, as they can cause adverse health effects in an intact organism, or its progeny, subsequent to endocrine function. Most EDCs are man-made organic chemicals (industrial chemicals, crop protection products, antifouling compounds, pharmaceuticals and personal care products). In addition, EDCs can be naturally occurring in the environment (eg the natural female hormones estrone and 17b-estradiol). Therefore EDCs, especially estrone and 17b-estradiol, are ubiquitous in the aquatic environment receiving sewage inputs. Estrogen and 17b-estradiol are among the most potent of all EDCs and are sufficiently stable to survive present sewage treatment processes and are reactivated during those processes through deconjugation (Clara, Strenn and Saracevic, 2004; Zhang and Zhou, 2005; Fukuhara et al, 2006; Butler and Guilbault, 2006; Volpe et al, 2006; Ren et al, 2007; Zeng and Li, 2007). In comparison to traditional contaminants such as pesticides, the concentrations of the most potent EDCs are low, generally within ng/one range. The current sewage treatment processes have limited capacity in removing certain EDCs (eg 17b-estradiol, C18H24O2) It is therefore essential to install additional treatment processes to remove them from wastewater before discharge (Zhang and Zhou, 2005; Fukuhara et al, 2006; Lee, Jung and Kim, 2006). Adsorption is considered to be a possible way to remove EDCs from aqueous solution. Various adsorbents have been studied, including chitin, chitosan, ion-exchange resin, activated sludge, activated carbon (Clara, Strenn and Saracevic, 2004; Yoona and Westerhoffa, 2003; Zhang and Zhou, 2005; Fukuhara et al, 2006; Ren et al, 2007). Studies have shown that organo-montmorillonite has a high affinity for organic pollutants (Li, 1997; Zhu et al, 1998; Han et al, 2001). The aim of this work is to investigate the feasibility of removing 17b-estradiol from aqueous solution by adsorption onto organo-montmorillonite.

Life inside the mining family was regulated by the mine. The whistle shrieked the change of shift to the Cornish, Welsh and German miners digging the alien soil for copper at Burra in the 1840s and the deep quartz gold mines at Bendigo in the 1880s.During the golden years of alluvial mining in the 1850s, and later out on the frontier fields of Kalgoorlie and Jarrahdale in Western Australia, the lure of the mine dominated family life. How could it do anything else? The canvas tent, bark hut or weatherboard cottage in which the mining family lived close by the mine facilitated prompt access. The working man of the family attended to the demands of the mine first, and those of his family afterward. Who then organized and nurtured the mining family? The role of the mining wife was multi-fold. She played the traditional roles of home-maker and comforter, raising her children, tending her house and vegetable garden and supporting those friends and acquaintances who had lost children to disease, or menfolk to the mine. Epidemics of measles, the whooping cough or influenza carried away children in infancy or at too young an age. The death of a husband through accident or disease (pthisis was a likely killer) forced upon the mining wife another role, that of provider. When Elizabeth Vigus' husband died in a Bendigo mine accident in March 1880 Elizabeth set up a grocery business to support her young children.' But in other cases the mining wife supplemented the family earnings by part time work, not in the mines for the Mines Act legislation of 1842 forbade the working of women underground, but in auxilfiary occupations which were in demand.2 Ann Mitchell, a herbalist ,found plenty of work in the goldfield towns of Daylesford and Maldon in the 1860s and 1870s.3 So too did Susan Rule and her daughter Catherine who conducted a sewing and millinery establishment in Beechworth in the 1870s.4 The making of the family's clothes was another task of the mining wife and mother.Until the wonderful invention of the sewing machine, this was a tedious and time-consuming task. James Slater Edmonson bought his wife a Wertheim for the sum of 12 pounds in June 1886, just before leaving her and his chil- dren in the Adelaide suburb of Goodwood whilst he went alone to the goldfields of the West. In October of that year he wrote to Louise telling her how he missed the childrens' wondering "whether Slater wore my old shirt now. I always think of him as he sat on my knee at breakfast in that old shirt; and how pleasant it would be if I could rock both of them and sing as I used to do".5

Acid rock drainage (ARD) can have detrimental effects on mining infrastructure, water reuse options and environmental discharge. As a result, some form of short- or long-term treatment is required at many mine sites. Successful treatment depends on a number of factors including the selection of an appropriate treatment technology and its correct implementation. A variety of passive and active technologies are available for dealing with ARD. Passive treatment solutions do not require continuous chemical inputs but take advantage of naturally occurring chemical and biological processes. They are often low cost, site specific approaches and are predominantly used in post-closure situations. Passive systems are well suited to drainage with low acid loads and low soluble aluminium concentrations, and are more effective with highly reduced (ie low oxygen) water. While they are often regarded as permanent fixes, most require some form of ongoing maintenance and all have an engineered life expectancy (ie finite carbonate and organic matter budgets). Passive treatments include, oxic limestone drains, anoxic limestone drains, limestone diversion wells, various reducing and alkalinity producing systems, pyrolusite limestone beds, aerobic and anaerobic wetlands, permeable reactive barriers (organic ¦ carbonate and zero valent iron), slag leach beds, and gas redox and displacement systems (GaRDS). Active treatment solutions require a continuous or semi-continuous activity (eg reagent dosing) to correct water quality issues. They can be engineered to treat virtually any type of drainage or site specific ARD issue, and have no set acid load or redox limitations. Tasks handled by active treatment systems are almost invariably larger and more costly than for passive systems. Active treatment approaches include; pH control, adsorption/absorption, ion-exchange, electrochemical concentration, biological mediation/redox control, flocculation/filtration and crystallisation. A range of generally available and proprietary technologies has been developed around these approaches. Active treatment involving pH correction with alkaline amendments is the most common and cost-effective form of ARD treatment. A variety of fixed plant and portable treatment systems are available. Calcium-based reagents, including quicklime (CaO), hydrated lime (Ca(OH)2) and limestone (CaCO3) remain the reagents of choice for the majority of active ARD treatment worldwide. This is principally due to their widespread availability, non-proprietary nature, and variety of proven dispensing technologies and cost-effectiveness. Limestone, in particular, is a very low cost reagent. However, due to æefficiency of useÆ problems with limestone in passive treatment systems, combined with its very low cost, there has been a recent emphasis on developing active treatment systems that use limestone efficiently. As the requirement for treatment increases, there is a growing emphasis on treatment sludge management and sludge stability. The final choice of a suitable treatment technology is dependent upon water chemistry (eg pH, type of metal contamination, acidity), flow rates, acid load, local natural resources (neutralising materials, topography), climate, site logistics, environmental risk and economics. The benefits and limitations of both passive and active treatment technologies are summarised.

MOUNT STEWART is situated half a mile south of Leadville railway station, which is distant 240 miles by rail from Sydney via Mudgee. It forms a low ridge from which rock waste and alluvium slope gradually to the black-soil flats of the Coolaburragundy River. The Mt. Stewart mine comprises:(a) The Mt. Stewart workings in M.L. 44, parish Talbragar, Co. Bligh.(b) The Grosvenor workings in M.Ls. 44 and 45, parish Talbragar, Co. Bligh.(c) The Extended workings in M.L. 44, parish Talbragar, Co. Bligh.The workings contain 1375 ft.. of vertical shafts, 1105 ft. of underlay shafts, 800 ft. of rises and winzes, 8520 ft. of drives and crosscuts, and 18,000 ft. of stapes.The mine was first opened in 1888 as a silver-lead mine, and a waterjacketed furnace was erected during 18B2. The furnace was installed with two internally-fired tubular boilers of 35 h.p. and 25 h.p. respectively, and two Baker's rotary pressure blowers. The results of the smelting campaign indicate that, during 14 months, a total of 15,000 tons of ore were treated, yielding silver and lead. Short-wave infrared (SWIR) spectral reflectance of the hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks in the footwall of the Hellyer Zn-Pb massive sulfide deposit was measured with a portable PIMATM infrared spectrometer. The Al-OH absorption band was used to derive information on the cation composition of white mica. The wavelength range of the Al-OH band from 2194 nm to 2222 nm reflects variation in the number of octahedral Al (Alvi) in white mica from 3.9 to 3.2 (based on four octahedral cations per formula). This Alvi range indicates a substantial compositional variation, covering most of the compositional region between muscovite (Alvi = 4.0) and phengite (Alvi = 3.0). Moreover, the spectral reflectance data show that the compositional variations of white mica are spatially related to the hydrothermal alteration zoning, such that the white mica of more phengitic composition tends to form in the main upflow fluid channels in the centre of the footwall alteration system. The results suggest that the octahedral Al content of white mica, which is spectrally definable by the wavelength of the Al-OH band using a field instrument such as the PIMATM, can be used to map fossil hydrothermal systems and potentially as vectors to mineralisation.

In southeastern China, offshore Tertiarybasins are buried underneath the broad continental shelf areas from Taiwan to Hainan Island. These basins bear relatively similar characteristics of structure, stratigraphy and tectonics. Based on age and tectonic framework, these Tertiary basins are divided into two groups of Paleogene basin and Neogene basin (Fig.1 and 2). However, observations of extensional structures indicate that the Paleogene basins are rift basins; and the predominant structural features are NE-SW trending half grabens and fault blocks. In a regional scale, these half grabens and adjacent uplifts represent a horst-and-graben structural style. Neogene basins are downwarp basins lying on the tilting continental shelf. Late Tertiary sequences are relatively undeformed but locally with minor folding and thrusting during the Pliocene-Pleistocene.Seismic stratigraphy and well data indicate that the Early Tertiary strata are commonly tilted and disturbed as nonmarine to marginal marine facies deposited in the wedge-shaped half grabens; the Late Tertiary strata are generally parallel undisturbed marine facies accumulated in the enlarged downwarp basins overlying the infilled half grabens. In general, three major regional unconformities formed during the Late Cretaceous, the Late Eocene and the Middle Miocene. Widespread extrusive basaltic flows are commonly associated with these unconformities.

At the Copper Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines, the largest diluent of the copper concentrate is liberated fine pyrite. Laboratory flotation tests carried out as a function of grind and flotation Eh in combination with surface analysis by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) have identified the major mechanisms of iron sulphide flotation. It was found that a significant proportion of the iron sulphide minerals had surface coverages of graphitic carbon, sufficient to impart moderate hydrophobicity in the absence of collector. A smaller, but economically significant proportion of chalcopyrite was also affected by the graphitic carbon coating. Two methods were tested to reduce the impact of the natural floatability of the iron sulphides on concentrate grades. 1. Depression through the use of organic depressants. 2. Preflotation to remove the "naturally hydrophobic" iron sulphides (flotation independant of Eh ) prior to chalcopyrite flotation. Preflotation was tested at the pilot plant scale. It was found that the amount of chalcopyrite reporting to the preflotation rougher concentrate could be minimised through flotation at a mildly reducing Eh by the use of nitrogen as the flotation gas to maintain the low Eh conditions resulting from grinding. The preflotation rougher concentrate was upgraded to an iron sulphide concentrate or a low grade copper concentrate.

The West Fork project is located in Reynolds County, Missouri, in the mineralized zone referred to as the Viburnum Trend. The West Fork orebody has a calculated ore re- serve of 13 600 000 tonne (15 000 000 st) con- taining 5.5 per cent lead, 1.2 per cent zinc, and recoverable values of copper and silver. A total of 64 600 tonne (71 200 st) of lead concentrate and 11 300 tonne (12 500 st) of zinc concentrate will be produced annually. The mill was designed to operate at an average capacity of 3450 tonne/day (3800 st/day), based on a 95 per cent availability factor. The mill will operate 24 hours a day, 5 days a week, with maintenance performed, as needed, on weekends. The mine will operate on an identical schedule; but the underground, pri- mary crushing will operate on a six hour/shift, three shift/day schedule. The 1.07m x 1.22m (42in x 48in) jaw crusher will produce a minus 20cm (8 in) material at an average rate of 191 tonne/h (211 st/h). The jaw crusher has almost twice the throughput capacity required, but the decision to install that size of crusher was based on the need to handle over sized rock in the ore.The coarse crushed ore will discharge into a 180 tonne (200 st) skip pocket, which will allow up to a one hour surge capacity prior to hoisting. Hoisted ore will discharge into a 900 tonne (1000 st) storage bin located adjacent to the headframe. The skip pocket and coarse ore silo comprise the total ore storage capacity. The concept of having no intermediate fine ore storage between the secondary crushing and grinding sections was borrowed from the Brushy Creek Mill of St. Joe Minerals, which operates adjacent to the West Fork property. Integration of the secondary crushing and grinding circuits has worked ' successfully for years at the Brushy Creek Mill. The most obvious advantage to eliminating the intermediate fine ore storage is'capital expen- diture savings. The capital expenditure savings include the cost of silos, feeders, and the cost of additional conveyor length and eleva- tion. Savings in operating costs will also be gained, particularly in reduced maintenance costs. Other factors which influenced the decision to eliminate fine ore storage were the simplicity of the secondary crushing sec- tion and the limited area available for con struction of the facility

The Dugald River Zn-Pb-Ag deposit occurs within the complexly deformed and metamorphosed sediments of the Middle Proterozoic Cloncurry Terrane, Eastern Succession, Mount Isa Inlier. The sedimentary sequence comprises a thick package of variably carbonatic argillitic and siliciclastic sediments of the Corella Formation, Lady Clayre Dolomite and Knapdale Quartzite. A slate and calc-argillite unit locally referred to as the Dugald River Slates is the host to the economically significant deposit. The deformational history of the Dugald River area involved three phases of ductile deformation. The present geometry of the Dugald River Main Lode is recognised as a strike extensive steep westerly dipping tabular sheet, within which a steep north westerly plunging zone of pronounced thickening is evident. This zone is interpreted to have formed during folding via remobilisation of the sulphides into a shoot-like body, the geometry of which was controlled by stretching associated with the folding. Further modification of the shoot and sulphide re-distribution has resulted from late phase transgressive shears. The sulphide mineralisation is characterised by three distinctive sulphide types, laminated, banded and breccia, the distribution of which define two broad zones. The northern zone is a narrow I - 5 m thick stratabound unit comprising finely laminated and banded sulphide mineralisation within a well bedded fine grained argillite sequence. This is part of the Lady Clayre Dolomite sequence and is a predeformational precursor form of mineralisation. The southern zone comprises the thickest development of mineralisation (up to 30 m) characterised by slate-sulphide breccias and veins derived from complex polyphase remobilisation of the sulphide mineralisation. It is this zone which forms a stratabound locally transgressive body within the high strain Dugald River Slates and which contains the main body of economic mineralisation. Sulphide mineralogy comprises sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, galena and traces of chalcopyrite, pyrargyrite, tetrahedrite, marcasite and arsenopyrite. The present resource for the Dugald River deposit stands at 38 Mt grading 13.0 per cent Zn, 2.1 per cent Pb and 42 g/t AS. The Dugald River Zn-Pb-Ag deposit is regarded as an example of a syndiagenetic stratabound sulphide accumulation which, as the result of polyphase deformation and upper greenschist to middle amphibolite facies metamorphism, has undergone extensive remobilisation and Rccrystallisation.

The Argo Archaean lode gold deposit is hosted within a structurally complex shear zone system, 70 km south of Kalgoorlie, and 3 km west of the crustal-scale Boulder û Lefroy Fault. Argo is an active underground mine currently producing at a rate of 120 koz pa with a Probable and Proven Reserve as at December 2005 of 2.19 Mt at 5.94 g/t Au (419 koz), a reduction on the December 2004 Probable and Proven Reserve of 4.58 Mt at 5.74 g/t Au (845 koz). This Reserve is hosted in six separate gold bearing lodes within the Argo shear system. Presently, a further six subeconomic shears are recognised. The 2005 Reserve figure represents a reduction of 426 koz compared to the 2004 Reserve as a result of a thorough review of the geological interpretation/resource model, and engineering factors applied to the Resource/Reserve, and depletion due to mining. Year on year Resource/Reserve figures at Argo had gradually increased as additional information on the system became available and mining methods were increasingly resolved with early production. The portal for Argo underground mine was cut in June 2002 within the highly profitable Argo open pit. The proposed æAvocaÆ bottom-up mining method required extensive lead time between development and the commencement of stoping in April 2004. During development considerable additional complexity in the Resource was encountered. Additional structures were identified, and complex splay interactions affecting the geology impacted on development. Intensive concurrent exploration in the footwall to the main lode during this period was the main cause of the increase in the Resource/Reserve figures during early development. As development progressed, lower grade continuity was observed than was previously interpreted. At the same time, drilling of deeper portions of the deposit and subsequent reinterpretation of the geological model significantly reduced strike lengths of economic mineralisation. Radical changes to the mining methods were required to improve productivities and to satisfy geotechnical considerations. The changes altered the engineering factors applied, which resulted in a reduction in the Reserve figures.

A narrow (200-300m) zone of amphibolite facies metamorphic rocks underlies the Papuan ophiolite near the Musa-Kumusi divide, SW of Popondetta, Oro Province. The amphibolite rocks are bounded up-section, to the NE, by peridotite and gabbro of the ophiolite; and down-section, to the SW, by mafic greenschist, which in turn overlies blueschist facies mafic schists of the Emo Metamorphics.Amphibole compositions within the narrow contact zone show a strong chemical zonation which reflects a steep thermal gradient, with maximum temperatures >800¦C at the peridotite contact. Lake Kopiago is located some 71km northwest of Tari in the Southern Highlands Province and lies on the northern edge of the Papuan Fold Belt. The area is underlain by middle Miocene carbonate and fine grained clastic sediments intruded by late Miocene hornblende gabbros.Two mineral deposits occur to the south of Lake Kopiago. These are the Bisamu gold prospect and the Wunaki zinc-lead gossan.The Bisamu deposit consists of a calcic skarn assemblage which is geochemically anomalous in gold, silver, copper, zinc, cobalt, bismuth and tellurium. The prograde mineral assemblage includes garnet, clino-pyroxene and epidote whereas the retrograde assemblage includes epidote, quartz, actinolite and chlorite. Pyrrhotite is the dominant sulphide with minor pyrite and marcasite and trace chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Minor magnetite is also present. The Bisamu skarn shows many of the features typical of gold-skarn type mineral-isation.

Fundamentally, the development of a minerals processing project is a very risky enterprise. Most mining companies do not have sufficient financial resources to undertake significant projects and hence have to undertake external financing. Indeed, most resource companies understand the high risks associated in developing their projects and therefore, wish others to share in the risks. Most merchant banks, on the other hand, are searching to find suitable resource development projects in which they can share their risk and also share a large proportion of the ærewardÆ. To resolve this issue a Feasibility Study is completed by the project developer and assessed by the merchant bank often with the assistance of an æIndependent EngineerÆ (IE) who assesses the validity of the development proposal. Generally speaking, unless the Feasibility Study has been prepared improperly, the technical aspects of most mineral projects are reasonable. Some of the more recent so-called æhigh techÆ projects are exceptions but these still do not present major technical mistakes or misconceptions. p> In most cases, the major criticism the IE presents after discussing the validity of the ore reserves focuses on production plans, capital costs and operating costs. Of these three parameters the production plan is one in which owners tend to be far too optimistic and financiers, until recent years, have not taken a position. The most critical part of the development plan is the ability of the project, as designed, to attain the required design performance and, even more critically, the ability of the owner to reach and sustain this level of production. In short, how long should the æramp-upÆ be planned to take? Financiers have become more circumspect and are now taking a more conservative view of new project performance by factoring into their project financial analysis longer periods of ramp-up, higher capital costs and higher operating costs. However, these financiers can also be part of the æproblemÆ if they become overly conservative. This paper attempts, by way of case studies available from the public arena, to identify the pitfalls the project owners can meet and possible means of avoiding the disastrous financial conundrum whereby the second or third æownerÆ is the company that reaps the rewards initially extrapolated. The paper briefly discusses this problem by referring to projects known to the author and including previous studies that looked at this very problem. It is emphasised that many of the opinions stated within the paper are strictly those of the author and could be subject of much debate.

The Hermit Islands are situated at 145¦ E 1 30'S in the Bismarck Sea approximately 200km WNW of Manus Island. They are dominated by basalt flows, one of which yielded a K/Ar isotopic date of 3.4 + 0.05Ma. All basalts examined were olivine-bearing, but one sample also contained hornblende. Although many outcrops were weathered, no evidence of pervasive hydrothermal alteration was observed on any islands and non-weathered rocks are petrographically fresh and many retain glass.

The Reward polymetallic massive sulphide deposit occurs 35 km south of Charters Towers, adjacent to the Highway gold deposit (Fig. 1). It is hosted within rhyolitic lavas and interlayered volcaniclastics of the Cambro-Ordovician Mt Windsor Volcanics. Reward is a "blind" deposit discovered in 1987 after a long history of exploration by various companies in the area. The main pyrite dominant massive sulphide body occurs under 100m combined thickness of Tertiary fluviatile sediments overlying deeply weathered gossanous volcanics. The exploration case-history provides a striking example of how geological and structural models can be built up almost exclusively from drill information. Four different styles and ages of mineralisation are present: 1) volcanogenic Cu+Pb+Zn+Ag+Au massive sulphides of probable syngenetic origin; 2) remobilised Cu+Au in massive pyrite of metamorphic/deformational origin; 3) supergene and 4) oxide Cu+Au mineralisation of weathering origin. The massive pyrite body, containing chalcopyrite lenses, transects the stratigraphy and is inferred to contain in excess of 5 million tonnes. Overlying the primary mineralisation a supergene chalcocite rich zone contains a measured/indicated resource of 634,231 tonnes of 6.77% Cu which includes 287,000 tonnes of 1.32 g/t Au and 18 g/t Ag. In addition a measured/inferred oxide resource of 309,000 tonnes of 5 g/t Au and 27 g/t Ag overlies the supergene zone.

The successful processing of arsenopyritic ores is difficult and will be facilitated by a better understanding of the mineralogy of gold within arsenopyrite and the type of arsenopyrite in which gold is taken up. Solid solution gold in arsenopyrite is now well documented, and is a significant cause of refractory behaviour in gold processing. Investigations of the crystal structure and stoichiometry of arsenopyrite by X-ray diffraction, electron microprobe analysis and convergent beam electron microscopy have been carried out in order to understand how the gold is incorporated into the structure. Variations in stoichiometry, particularly the As:S ratio, of arsenopyrite leads to variations in structural parameters. These variations result in slight changes in thermal behaviour. The distribution of invisible gold in an arsenopyrite grain is generally non-uniform and synthesised samples contain up to 2 wt per cent gold. A transmission electron microscopy (TEM) technique called ALCHEMI is being used to identify the substitution site. The process of gold agglomeration together with evidence of an ordered breakdown of arsenopyrite to pyrrhotite has been documented with the use of TEM. An arsenopyrite grain containing invisible gold was heated with an electron beam resulting in recrystallisation of arsenopyrite to pyrrhotite with arsenic being expelled. The gold is mostly insoluble in the pyrrhotite lattice and therefore exsolves out and combines with other gold atoms to form droplets at the boundary of the pyrrhotite.
