Geological maps, data, and prospectivity analysis relevant to mineral exploration in New Zealand have recently been released. Regional-scale geological mapping is increasingly available for the country through the QMAP 1:250 000 Geological Map of New Zealand programme. Published QMAP sheets Greymouth, Wakatipu, Waitaki and Dunedin cover large areas of interest for mineral exploration companies. The QMAP geological data are also available in digital form for use with other digital datasets using GIS software. Crown Minerals, in cooperation with GNS, have completed two gold prospectivity studies; the first covering mesothermal gold in the South Island, and the second encompassing epithermal gold in northern New Zealand. These studies have defined areas of interest for these two mineralisation types and assembled geological, mineral occurrence and production, geochemical, geophysical, topographic and cultural data into projects for use with GIS software. Included are the results of prospectivity modeling for gold using these data and specific mineralisation models. The prospectivity studies and relevant data are freely available on CD through Crown Minerals and are intended to encourage mineral exploration in New Zealand.

Numerous supergene manganese oxide deposits are developed inSouth China as a result of weathering of a thick sequence of Paleozoic marine Mn-bearing sedimentary rocks, consisting mainly of limestones, cherts and black shales that were intensely folded and faulted due to multiple episodes of tectonism since the late Triassic. The ore minerals are dominantly pyrolusite, cryptomelane, nsutite, lithiophorite and braunite. The supergene manganese ores contain Mn ranging from 20 to 44 wt per cent; manganese oxide deposits derived from cherts and black shales also contain recoverable levels of Co, Ni, Cu, Pb and Zn. 40Ar/39Ar dating of potassium-bearing manganese oxides reveals that extensive supergene manganese ore formation started at least in the earliest Miocene and persisted to the Present. Ages of the deposits show a close correlation to tectonic stability, with the oldest in tectonically quiescent areas and the youngest in active areas that have subjected to continuous uplift and thus significant denudation. The prolonged wet and hot climate since Oligocene and the balance between weathering and erosion, which is parameter to the tectonic stability, are the ultimate controls on the formation and distribution of South China supergene manganese oxide deposits. The behaviour of iron ore granules in the feeding process of sintering is significantly influenced by the material properties of the granulated mix. Therefore, the measurement of key material properties of the iron ore granulated mix is indispensable prior to the simulation of the sintering process based on the discrete element method (DEM). In this paper, three key property parameters of the iron ore granulated mix, apparent density, elastic modulus and rolling friction coefficient, were measured in laboratory-scale experiments. For different sintering processes, the moisture content of the granulated mix normally varies according to the specific requirements for granule size distribution and operating conditions. Therefore, understanding the effect of moisture content on the property parameters of iron ore granules is very helpful in accurately determining the property parameters for DEM simulation work. In this paper, six groups of iron ore granule samples with six levels of moisture contents were prepared through granulation and the trends in apparent density, elastic modulus and rolling friction coefficient with the increase of moisture content were plotted and analysed based on the measurement results. The results show that as moisture increases from 6.9 per cent to 9.1 per cent, the apparent density decreases from about 3000 to 2800 kg/m3. With moisture increasing within the same range, the elastic modulus first decreases from over 200 MPa to below 100 MPa and then reaches a relative constant value of about 40 MPa at higher moisture contents. Rolling friction coefficients are measured using two methods with both indicating a similar trend, with the rolling friction coefficient first decreasing and then rising as moisture increases from 6.9 per cent to 9.1 per cent. Much effort over the years has been put into the task of devising parameters which adequately assess the metallurgical efficiency of mineral processmg operations. One of the most celebrated of these methods is the so-called "release analysis" method of Dell (1953) which tackles the problem in terms of an ideal separation based on sequential retreatment of the products and tails of a given separation process. Other methods have also been proposed by Jowett (1969) and by Holland-Batt (1971 ). While these procedures are appropriate to multi-component mineralogical separations, they perhaps do not lend themselves to the much more simple two-component systems encountered in coal preparation. However Dell (1962) has suggested the use of the term "specific profit" in coal preparation in order to assess the conditions that give maximum economic gain. Specific profit is derived from data relating washability data with equipment performance and operating costs. The procedure for using this criterion for comparative purposes is therefore somewhat cumbersome as is illustrated by its lack of widespread acceptance in the coal preparation literature.In contrast, an efficiency index, E, which is both simple and meaningful from the utilitarian standpoint, has been proposed by Tsiperovich and Evtushenko (1959a). This index is defined by the relation, E = Yield X Tailings ash/Product ash (1) A cursory examination of this parameter shows that it increases when yield and tailings ash increase and also when product ash decreases; all of which are desirable circumstances in coal cleaning operations.Further, it will be shown that slight variations in operation are amplified by this function which makes comparisons simple and direct.While the use of this index is quite extensive in the Soviet coal preparation literature for some reason it has not received wide usag~ elsewhere.

Factors of importance in the ntilization of coal fines are mentioned, and the results of flotation tests on coal fines from three important coal seams in New South Wales are presented.INTRODUCTIONEconomic utilization of fine coal is an important problem in the Australian coal industry, particularly as the proportion of fines mined is increasing with progressive mechanization.While the use of uncleaned coal fines may be economic, it may be preferable to beneficiate them, but the most economic process must be selected.For beneficiating coal finer than about 28 mesh, froth flotation can be applied, but mining engineers should avoid practices that may be detrimental to flotation. Such practices include the indiscriminate use of water, particularly that containing a wetting' agent, for dust suppression. In addition, clay stemming in wet conditions may produce slimes which could adsorb on coal surfaces, while the use of oils and greases as well as the application of stone dust and chlorides in roadway consolidation may influence adversely fine coal beneficiation.This paper deals with the application of flotation to samples of fine coal from the Bulli, Greta, and Victoria Tunnel seams. In addition a discussion is given of the mineralogical constitution, size analysis, and degree of liberation of ash constituents of the various samples.COAL SAMPLESRepresentative samples of coal from the Bulli, Greta, and Victoria Tunnel seams were obtained for testing.

During the last 125 years, the steel industry has witnessed revolutionary changes in the process of steelmaking. The Bessemer process was the predominant steel production technology during the last two decades of the 19th century. The open hearth process accounted for the lion's share of world steel production for six decades from 1910 to 1970. With the appearance of the LD process on the industrial stage in 1952, the importance of open hearth process declined and currently the basic oxygen processes are contributing more than 60 per cent of the world steel production. The LD process also led to the development of several other oxygen blown processes such as LDAC, OLP, OBM, QBOP, EOF, Clc.

The occurrence of molybdenite in a small shaft in the western margin of the Wuuluman Granite in central western New South Wales is noted. Full petrographic and mineragraphic descriptions are given of a mineralized contact zone between the granite and a basic hornfels.Mineralogical data .indicate a similarity between this mineral occurrence and other occurrences in larger mines remote from the granite.

The completion of the first two open hearth furnaces in the new No. 2 open hearth plant at Port Kembla will increase Australian production of steel by 350,000 tons of ingots per annum.The paper gives an outline of the essential features of open hearth design and auxiliary equipment required to operate the two modern open hearth furnaces at present being installed.INTRODUCTIONThe increasing demand for steel required by Australian secondary industries led to the decision to construct and operate No. 2 open hearth plant at Port Kembla. Two basic open hearth furnaces of the most modern design are under construction and it is anticipated that these units will be commissi.oned in September 1956. Australian steel capacity will thereby be increased by approximately 350,000 tons of ingots per annum.PLANT LAY-OUT AND CONSTRUCTIONIn the design and lay-out of this plant the emphasis has been on efficient material handling with simplicity of design and operation. Overseas methods were studied and these studies, together with experience gained at Newcastle and Port Kembla open hearth shops, enabled this plant to be built to a standard which compares favourably with any other in the industry.Initially two furnaces, each of 2,75 tons capacity, have been built, but provision has been made in. the design and lay-out to enable expansion to six furnaces.The location of the new plant in relation to the existing units will be noted in Fig. 5. At Copper Refineries Pty. Ltd., Townsville, two reverberatory furnaces of 420 tonnes capacity are used to melt 210000 tonnes/year of copper for subsequent anode casting. When the refinery commenced production in1959, these furnaces were of 300 tonnes capacity. The original furnaces featured a silica brick hearth, magnesite and chrome magnesite side 'walls, and a sprung silica brick roof, but were unsatisfactory because of thelow refractory life and high costs. With continuous expansion in production and the incentive to increase furnace life and capacity the design of these furnaces has changed greatly since that time.The present furnaces feature all basic brick, a flat suspended basic brick roof, very extensive use of watercooled copper sections, and are of substantially increased (420 tonnes) capacity. Particular attention has been concentrated on high wear areas such as the taphole, side walls, and charging door jambs. Each furnace in its 24 h cycle, is charged, the copper melted, impurities skimmed off, metal "poled" prior to casting, and cast.The service condition during each of these operations is important in considering furnace refractory life.The improvements in operating practices and furnace 'construction which enabled the capacity of the furnaces to be increased are discussed. The life between major repairs to side walls has increased from 90 charges to300 charges.The scope for future improvement is considered and areas for development are suggested.

The early records of hydraulic elevator and bucket ladder dredging in the Clutha River system indicate the success of that era of alluvial gold mining in Otago. This paper briefly reviews parameters of depth and gold grade for alluvial operations. The application of dragline technology is proposed for the economic removal of overburden to target the deeper alluvial gold areas which remain in the Otago region.

WITH the exception of the deposits of the Milburn Cement Co near Dunedin, Wilson's Portland Cement Co., on the Mahurangi River (a short distance north of Auckland), and those of the New Zealand Portland Cement Co., at Limestone Island, the cement. Tesources of New Zealand remain practically undeveloped. The Milburn Company utilizes a mixture of limestone and mud for the manufacture of cement, while Wilson's and the New Zealand Portland Cement companies both have the advantage of a natural cement stock which requires but small additions of highgrade limestone to give the mixture required. The plant and deposits of the New Zealand Portland Cement Co are located in Whangarei Harbour, some six miles from thetownship of Whangarei. The works and dwelling-houses are situated on Limestone Island, which, with an area of 92 acres, and rising to a height of 212 ft., supplies the bulk of the raw material required. In addition to the island, the company possesses a high-grade limestone area of, roughly, four acres, situated on the mainland, 11 miles to the south. A.) : In congratulating Mr. Hooker upon his resume of Mr Parry's paper I have in mind the fact that he carried out the research into pipe pressures. Hydraulic filling as practised in Kalgoorlie has created world wide interest, with these pressures and percolation being vital points.Early in the 1950s, representatives of the Kolar field were conduGted over the local mines where stopes at depths below 2,000 ft were being filled. The problems of pipe pressures were their main consideration since depths of up to 10,000 ft were envisaged.Mr Krishnaiah and Mr Murthy from the same field are with us today and perhaps we may hear of their experiences with depths of 6,000 ft and long lateral lines.J. Laboratory and pilot plant investigations aimed at recovering gold as an electroformed sheet from gold eluate and gold leach solutions and slurries are discussed. The electrolytic test work undertaken makes use of high surface area electrodes, in particular nickel-chrome foam metal and activated carbon, as well as ultrasonic activation. The process involves initial gold electrowinning (or adsorption onto activated carbon), followed by gold electroforming, both operations being carried out in a specially designed reactor. The pilot plant work mainly involved the treatment of gold eluate solutions from a South African gold mine containing 600 mg/L Au: some tests were also carried out on gold leach solutions containing 6 mg/L Au. In the former case, very efficient gold extraction onto the foam metal cathode was achieved using electrolysis combined with ultrasonics. The polarity of the gold-loaded cathode was then reversed and, using a replacement electroforming electrolyte, gold was electroformed in situ onto a polished stainless steel mandrel, from which gold sheet was subsequently removed. In the case of leach solutions, pilot plant tests confirmed laboratory findings that in the presence of calcium (resulting from the lime used during the leaching process) no electrowinning is possible. Laboratory tests showed, however, that when sodium (in the form of NaOH or Na2CO3) is added to the leach solution, electrowinning can indeed take place. Alternatively, if a special activated carbon electrode is used (without current), the non-ionic calcium aurocyanide complex is adsorbed on to the activated carbon. When a gold-loaded activated carbon electrode is made anodic in a gold electroforming electrolyte, gold electroforming is feasible, although the efficiency is very low. The possible implications of these developments for gold recovery are further examined.

"AustraliaÆs mining sector faces challenges to its competitiveness; operating costs are being adversely affected as a result of volatile commodity prices and growing international market pressures.Diesel fuel-generated power used in typical remote mining projects is generally reliable and quick-to-deploy; however it is ongoing expensive operating cost.Many mines and communities in remote locations source electricity from diesel generation, and often pay over $300/MWh in fuel and carbon only (i.e. excluding CAPEX). These costs are expected to rise over time and are vulnerable to price shock events or supply chain interruptions in international markets.Solar photovoltaic (PV) and other renewables can be integrated with existing diesel units to provide a highly reliable power supply. Such renewables now provide a cheaper source of electricity while maintaining the mining industryÆs stringent reliability requirements; some renewables are now cheaper than diesel power ù supplying electricity at approximately $226/MWh.Also, significant funding and concessional rate financing have recently become available to support the development of remote solar-diesel (or solar-wind-diesel) hybrid systems, including: up to $2.2 billion of as-yet uncommitted grants through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and is now seeking mining industry partners, up to $10 billion of concessional financing for emerging renewable technologies through the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) and this commences July 2013, ongoing revenue support through the Renewable Energy Target scheme, and other regional support programs administered by various governments.This paper explores: the business case for renewables - what applications and when to consider them, the potential operating cost savings if solar was integrated, the technical challenges and common pitfalls, and how to overcome them, and the upfront investment costs and whether the site is eligible for Government subsidy programs.CITATION:Chambers, C, 2013. Effects of DA as a Grinding Aid on Selective Grinding of Low-Grade Bauxite Effects of DA (a copolymer of acrylic acid and acrylamide) as a grinding aid on selective grinding of low-grade bauxite were investigated in this study. The addition of DA into the grinding system enhanced the selectivity of grinding and increased the A/S ratio in the coarse fraction of ground product, leading to improved throughput of grinding mills and alumina recovery. The results showed that DA decreased the viscosity of slurry significantly and hence improved grinding efficiency due to low viscosity at a high slurry concentration. Both the hydrogen bond formation and chemical adsorption existed between DA and the surface of bauxite particles. The adsorption of DA on the surface of bauxite could decrease stress needed for crack initiation and extending during grinding, prevent new-born crack surfaces from rejoining, and promote the expansion of the cracks.

The classification performance of a Dutch State Mines (DSM) Rapped Sieve Bend has been investigated in a series of experiments. Coal slurries of a nominal 0.5 mm size were classified in the separation range of 0.10 to 0.14 mm at pulp densities from 6 to 21 per cent by mass of solids, and flow rates of 110 to 1375 litre min-1.The results obtained showed that the partition curve and water split io oversize was dependent on the solids flow rather than slurry flow rate or pulp density. For most of the operating conditions considered an accurate classification of the fine coal was obtained. The undersize efficiency was susceptible to solids flow rate, and was less than 70 per cent for solids flow rates greater than 16.7 tonne hour-1 metre-1 width of screen.

In March 2012 a combined BHP Billiton and Hatch team embarked on a program to improve the concentrate burner efficiency of BHP Billiton’s Olympic Dam copper flash smelting furnace. A multi-faceted approach including an analysis of the furnace using operational knowledge and first principles engineering led to the design and supply of a new central-lance (disperser). A new, patented, swirl method of introducing the copper concentrate into the furnace was developed to integrate with the existing concentrate burner. Plant trials in 2014 demonstrated an increase of nearly 10 percent in the oxygen efficiency of the furnace. This paper provides a history of the challenges that were experienced while treating both the clayey oxide gold ores and the supergene copper-gold ores at the Boddington Gold Mine during the period 1989 to 2001. However the bigger challenge was to find a process flow sheet that would allow the economic treatment of the large low-grade competent gold-copper resource that underlies the oxide and supergene gold resource. Metallurgical test work and engineering studies on this resource started in the mid 1990s and culminated in the approval in 2006 of the 35 Mtpa Boddington Expansion Project to treat this material. The process flow sheet provides the basis of an energy efficient comminution circuit that includes high pressure grinding rolls and a treatment circuit with gravity separation, flash and conventional flotation to produce a precious metal low-grade copper concentrate followed by cyanide leaching of the rougher-scavenger and cleaner tailings streams. The treatment circuit allows maximum removal of copper minerals prior to cyanide leaching and so provides an environmentally responsible tailings disposal circuit.

The beach sand industry is the only Australian mineral industry which, so far, has used electrostatic separation on a full commercial scale. The main application of the process is for the separation of rutile from zircon. Laboratory work has demonstrated that electrostatic methods are effective for ilmenite-monazite and cassiterite-zircon separations, thus facilitating the production of high grade monazite and cassiterite products from top-strip table concentrates, but the commercial application of these processeshas been rather limited so far. Overseas, electrostatic methods are becoming more widely used for the treatment of granular material which is not amenable to flotation. The use of electrostatic separation for the treatment of ores other than beach sands has been investigated in this laboratory 1, 2, 3, and two pilot separators were built during i953 to carry out field tests. Of these, the first was an inclined feed plate separator for the removal of silica from granular lime-sand in Western Australia, the second a conductance roll separator for the removal of diamonds from alluvial gravel in New South Wales. In both cases the whole of the ore passed through the separator, not a gravity concentrate only as in beach sand practice. The two types of separator mentioned are shown diagramatically in Figs. 1 and 2.

For companies with assets around the Pacific Rim, there are arguably five key stock/securities exchanges that actively promote international minerals company listings, and these are located in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore and the United Kingdom.Listing on any of these exchanges requires a range of technical, commercial, financial and legal documentation. Each exchange has specific rules and requirements for technical documentation to support the listing process. Once listed, each exchange also has specific rules for technical information to meet ongoing compliance requirements.
