The Peelwood district of New South Wales is located some 65 miles south of Bathutst on the Tuena-Crookwell road. A number of occurrences of lead-zinc-copper ore are known from this district but only three mines, Peelwood, Cordillera and Mt. Costigan, have achieved any significant production. The purpose of the paper is to describe the mineral composition of sulphide ores from these three localities.HISTORYNo published information on the geology of the Peelwood area is available. Came (1899) reports that, at the time of cessation of mining operations in 1888, the Peelwood mine had produced some 600 tons of copper metal and regulus, the Cordillera mine had yielded 9000 tons of ore at the recoverable grade of 2·5 per cent Pb, 2·5 per cent Cu, 90z/ton Ag and 1 dwtjto:p. Au, but that no production figures were available from Mt. Costigan. No further work was carried out on these properties until 1951 when the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia instigated a programme of geological mapping and exploratory diamond drilling (Whitten, unpublished data, 1953). Some of the problems associated with drill core evaluation of alluvial tin deposits and correlation with plant-scale recovery are discussed. Panning churn-drill cores on site tends to undervalue such deposits because of failure to recover completely all the available liberated cassiterite, and secondary gravity processing may also fail to give an accurate determination of potentially recoverable tin. However, by using a combination of heavy liquid separations, x-ray fluorescence analysis for Sn, and normal methods of reflected and transmitted polarized light microscopy, a quantitative assessment of alluvial material can be carried- out. The information obtained may include the liberation characteristics and distribution with size of the cassiterite, the nature and quantities of the various gangue minerals, and the amount of potentially recoverable cassiterite in the material as compared with the amount locked with light gangue minerals and hence difficult or impossible to recover. In addition, an analysis of the efficiencies of the various gravity processes, such as panning, jigging, and tabling, used to determine "recoverable tin" in the alluvial material, can be carried out. A detailed example is given of this type of investigation, in which an assessment was made of a churn-drill core from Uncia, Bolivia.

Late in 2005 it became apparent that cave propagation at the Northparkes Mine was not progressing as planned. By mid-2006 sufficient Reserves were identified to warrant an extensive drill and blast program to assist in cave propagation. This program began late in 2006 and concluded early 2007. A significant challenge faced was the drilling and blasting of holes between 75 - 240 m in length in the South Wedge in Lift 2 at Northparkes Mines E26 orebody. The project set new benchmarks in production drilling and charging in underground metalliferous mining. This paper discusses the drill and blast designs, the challenges and the operational issues encountered with this project. Also highlighted are ways in which these were overcome.

The Grasberg block cave rail haulage system will be located in the Grasberg mining district on the island of Papua, Indonesia at an elevation of almost 3000 m above sea level. It will transport 160 000 t of ore per day from multiple chute galleries to the underground crushing systems. The design entails approximately 23 km of rail (ballasted and embedded track), over 120 ore chutes to deliver ore to the muck cars and three unloading stations to deliver ore to the crushers. The rail haulage system is a closed-loop system entirely within the underground mining complex.The GBC rail haulage project will be a substantial operation. Trains consist of 11–12 bottom-dump 20 m3 muck cars driven by a 40 t electric locomotive, about 400 t per trainload. Approximately 12 trains and one spare are required to maintain full production at 160 000 t/d. All rail installations will be 1435 mm (standard) gauge with AS60 steel.The rail system is designed to operate in full automated mode, including chute loading, hauling and dumping. The operation will be controlled from a surface control room.The rail haulage project has been divided into five stages, which will be brought online over the course of ten years. Current development and construction are focused on Stage 1 for initial production that will occur beginning in late 2017. This stage includes 24 chutes in three chute galleries, one unloading station, workshop areas and almost 7 km of track (3 km of embedded and 4 km of ballast).This paper describes the key components of the rail haulage system and reports on the current status of development and construction of the system. The Maragorik Prospect represents a partially eroded Pliocene acid sulphate style epithermal gold system hosted within the Sigule Volcanics and Riet Bed sediments which is inferred to have formed from a degassing porphyry body at depth. A regional sinistral rotation provided by transform faults associated with the opening of the Manus Basin imparts a dilational character to mineralised NE trending faults formed parallel to the Warangoi Graben. A controlled-source audio magneto-tellurics (CSAMT) survey has identified E-W trending buried conductors which may represent alteration formed within dilation zones. While some gold mineralisation occurs within vuggy silica at Palang Hill, the target is auriferous enargite (luzonite)-bearing breccias from the LK1 and Gureki areas.

According to the temporal and spatial distribution of regional metallogenesis, thePacific Rim can be divided into four global metallogenetic systems. The Asia-Australia W-Sn metallogenetic belt is the typical representative of intracontinental metallogenetic systems. This belt resulted from Mesozoic and partly pre-Mesozoic tectonic magmatism, mainly related to S-type granite of crustal source that was generated by collisional orogeny combined with oceanic subduction in intracontinental and continental margin settings. Based on the concept of metallogenetic series, there is a group of mineralised ore types showing a definite spatial and temporal distribution from endogenetic to exogenetic. These metallogenetic series are widely distributed in the Asia-Australia W-Sn metallogenetic belt, and are well developed in Southeast China. Five metallogenetic series and two petro-minerogenesis evolution models have been established according to their tectonic settings, various types of granitoids and metallogenetic evolution.

Effects of High Pressure Grinding Rolls on Platinum-Bearing Ores and the Flotation Response as Compared to the Conventional Ball Mill Three major PGM ore types from the Bushveld Complex of South Africa: Merensky, UG2 and Platreef were comminuted with the use of the high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR). The influence of the feed characteristics and the various operational and design features of the HPGR on energy consumption, throughput, mineral liberation and PGM flotation recovery were investigated. The test work variables included two feed top sizes of 12 mm and 6 mm, specific grinding forces ranging between 3 - 7.5N/ mm2 and zero gaps of 1.5 mm and 3 mm. The results show that the influence of the HPGR operational and design features on energy consumption, throughput, mineral liberation and PGM recovery are ore dependent. The size reduction-specific energy relationships show that the most energy efficient utilisation of the HPGR for Platreef ore was at the lower specific grinding force of 3N/mm2 and the zero gap at 3 mm. For Merensky and UG2 ore on the other hand, the most energy efficient operation was at the higher specific grinding force of 7.5N/mm2 and the zero gap of 1.5 mm. At a specific energy input of 3 kWh/t, reduction ratios (F50/P50) of 6.5, 3.8 and 10 were obtained for Merensky, UG2 and Platreef, respectively for feed top sizes of 12mm. Further application of the HPGR as a pregrinding stage to a ball mill showed a 25 - 30 per cent increase in throughput for Merensky and UG2 ore. Batch flotation tests performed on selected samples appear to indicate that ore comminuted with the ball mill had superior grades compared with that ground with the HPGR. However, Merensky and UG2 ore comminuted at different HPGR operating conditions showed distinctions in PGM recovery. Platreef on the other hand did not appear to show any differences. Therefore, this study highlights the significance of ore type and operating variables in HPGR applications with regards to energy efficiency, throughput and PGM recovery.

This paper discusses the geotechnical condition of bedding shears and small- and large-scale faults and shears in Archean banded iron formation (BIF) bedrock, based on observations of core and televiewer images. Information that can be collected includes the orientation of defects, infill thickness, strength and material type, defect shape and surface roughness.The spacing and continuity of bedding shears may be critical to slope design where performance is structurally controlled with bedding dipping out of a wall. The intensity of development of the bedding shear is a useful indicator of the amount of shearing a bedding surface has been subjected to. This can allow for engineering judgement to be used in adopting peak or residual shear strengths along defect surfaces when developing the design.The spacing and continuity of bedding shears may also contribute to the blockiness and degradation of a rock mass where the structural orientation is otherwise favourable. Additionally the condition, thickness and strength of infill of major fault structures can affect slope design and performance, depending on orientation.Comparison of the condition of structures observed in core with the corresponding in situ televiewer image has been made to assess what characteristics are most accurately captured by each technique and whether the additional information gathered from using the televiewer technique is justified by the cost. The question of whether the data collected by a televiewer is sufficient to ultimately replace the need for core is considered.CITATION:Baxter, H and Eggers, M, 2013. The information age has definitely arrived and in fact has only begun to affect our business processes. Traditionally mining companies have been innovators and leaders with technology, but applying information technology systems to machines directly working on the mining extraction process poses challenges to those introducing the technology. Caterpillar is now presenting machine guidance and information systems for dozers, graders, blast hole drills, shovels, excavators, wheel loaders and trucks. These systems simply increase the flow of real information in real time and deliver it to the end users who can make informed decisions that effect real productivity gains and at the same time eliminate the role of the middle manager who used to monitor and control these activities. Technology also offers cultural changes that appear intangible, but offer significant gains to those that implement technology. Critics state that these intangible benefits are still available to traditional processes, however these intangible elements are never identified nor managed without the introduction of technology enhanced processes. The benefits of these technologies are real and dramatic, existing users offer impressive testimonials, but still the technology can be disproportionate in the time it takes to introduce to an operation. Caterpillar finds that senior to executive management needs to be a part of the technology introduction, to coordinate all departments and set technology strategies.

The title of this address was selected before I had an opportunity to consider in detail the matters that I would like to discuss. Accordingly, I chose a very broad subject-so broad indeed that it would be foolhardy for me to attempt to deal with more than a few aspects of it. I do not propose to touch. at all on the developments to date of our mining and metallurgical enterprises, beyond paying a sincere tribute'to the skill and enterprise of those who have established an international reputation for Australian mining and metallurgy. I would rather look ahead and discuss certain factors that will play a decisive part in the future development of our mineral resources. I do this in no dogmatic spirit, and I hope that my remarks may lead to discussions which will stimulate action where it is needed.In recent years my colleagues and I have been forced by circumstances to give consideration to problems in the fields of mining and geology, and in process metallurgy, which lie outside the scope of our own research work. People come to us with metallurgical problems because they know of no more appropriate place to go, and it is distressing to have to inform them that it is nobody's job to offer them advice and assistance. I want to suggest to your Institute that it should press strongly for the provision of properresearch facilities for the mining and metallurgical industries, such as aready exist in most enlightened countries. In such countries, those connected with the development of mineral resources are able to obtain information and advice from Geological Surveys, Mines Departments or Bureaux of Mines, which offer far more comprehensive services than are available in this country.Before discussing specific technical problems of the mining and minerals industries, I shall enunciate certain general principles that I believe should be followed in respect to the technical side of the development of all Australian industries. The problem can, I suggest, be considered in three parts-technical education production, and research. I shall confine my remarks mostly to the research aspect, for it is with this that I am most familiar.For the efficient development of any industry in Australia, it is essential firstly that We should learn what is going on abroad, and secondly that we should simultaneously conduct independent research. The ability to design a beneficiation process for a new orebody based on particular feed characteristics is a powerful and practical tool. A new technique has been developed where beneficiation outcomes can be calculated by combining feed size-by-size chemical analysis, mineralogy, liberation and particle characteristics with a series of simple theoretical unit separation models rather than a simple mass balance approach or an exhaustive beneficiation test program. The new technique provides the ability to rapidly identify ore types that have the potential to meet product specifications whilst also rejecting others that will not meet specification even if a perfect separation was achieved. Beyond the broad scale decision making process, practical mineral separation curves from actual plant data can be used to more closely simulate the proposed process. This approach reduces the amount of laboratory and pilot plant work necessary by targeting what process stages will be required, increases early rejection of uneconomic options, identifies problematic ore types or unit operations and is a step towards estimation of final grade and recoveries achievable in potential circuit configurations.

Deposits of the Reefton Goldfield, West Coast, New Zealand, are hosted on N-NE striking, upright folds of the Greenland Group. High-grade quartz lodes are hosted on axial planar shears, typically have short strike lengths, and form shoots that pitch steeply on the hosting shears. Deposits within the field area of a detailed structural study share these characteristics. Field mapping and microstructural analysis have demonstrated that the Greenland Group was affected by a multideformational sequence. Gold mineralisation is hosted on shears axial planar to the F2 folds, but occurred during a subsequent deformation event (D4). Deformation during D4 resulted from N-NE directed shortening, near parallel to the trend of the F2 folds. This event produced F4 kink folds that were accommodated by layer parallel slip on S2 parallel shears, gold mineralisation during D4 being confined to the dilational hinges of F4 kink folds. The semi-brittle nature of D4 allowed the formation of stockwork veining and disseminated mineralisation within the F4 hinge zones. Most deposits within the goldfield are similar to those within the field area, and are interpreted to have been mineralised during D4. The two largest known deposits within the goldfield, however, are distinct. The Blackwater Deposit, striking parallel to the hosting folds, has a combined strike length of 1 km. The Globe-Progress Deposit is hosted on an E-W striking discordant shear in which a brittle zone of disseminated mineralisation encompasses high-grade quartz lodes. The characteristics that distiguish the Globe and Blackwater deposits may be due to formation before and after D4 respectively. Detailed field mapping in the vicinity of known deposits throughout the goldfield will further refine the relationships between the F2 folds, later deformations and the localisation of ore deposits. Additional mapping may also help constrain the position, orientation and extent of additional orebodies.

Coromandel Peninsula gold mineralisation has an epithermal style which involves extensive alteration of host rocks and addition of pyrite over large volumes of rock. These altered rocks therefore have high potential for generating acid rock drainage. Natural acid groundwater discharges occur in altered rocks, but not in propylitically altered rock. There is little calcite available in mineralised rocks to neutralise this acid. In contrast, the mesothermal veins of the Otago Schist cause little alteration of the host rock, and that alteration has similar mineralogy to the host rock. Calcite is a common mineral in host and mineralised zones, and sulphides are generally subordinate. Hence acidification of Otago rocks is unlikely. This lack of acidification in Otago facilitates arsenic mobility in solution, up to hundreds of ppm. Arsenic is insoluble under acidic conditions in the Coromandel. Base metals are soluble under acidic conditions of the Coromandel, but they are immobilised by adsorption on to the widespread clay minerals where the solutions are neutralised. Base metals are generally immobile in Otago, but when they are mobilised, adsorption is less effectiveas an attenuation mechanism because clay minerals are rare.

Massive sulphide ZnPbCuAg deposits in the Halls Peak district of north-eastern NSW are of the submarine volcanogenic type. They occur as a number of small lenses enclosed in shale and epiclastic rocks, in association with felsic volcanics of early Permian age. The deposits crop out in steep terrain near the eastern edge of the New England plateau. Local relief of 700 m and slopes up to 50¦, coupled with an average annual rainfall of about 1000 mm has led to local severe land sliding in previously mined areas. Mining from the 1890s to the 1960s has also resulted in unconstrained drainage of heavy metal-bearing acid waters and physical dispersion of finer grained metalliferous sediments into the Chandler River. Waters emanating from the main landslide area, from underground workings and draining scattered unconfined stockpiles of massive sulphide ore have pH values of 3 to 4 and contain elevated contents of Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd and Fe. Chemical mobility of heavy metals into streams occurs under low pH conditions with Zn exhibiting the greatest dispersion. Increasing pH conditions downstream cause precipitation of Fe phases and coprecipitation of heavy metals. Physical dispersion of secondary metal-bearing minerals into the surrounding creeks results in wt% levels of Cu, Pb and Zn in the stream sediments thereby exceeding the regional background values by one to three orders of magnitude. Areas disturbed by mining are characterised by lack of vegetation, biomagnification of heavy metals into algae and lower plants, and partial recolonisation by metal-tolerant grass species (Snow Grass, Poa sieberana; Blady Grass, Lomandra longifolia). Rehabilitation measures will have to include landslide stabilisation, impervious sealing or removal of sulphidic materials, import of topsoil and revegetation by metal-tolerant, slow-growing native grass and shrub species.

Lignite deposits of Central Otago Miocene Dunstan Formation accumulated on a broad alluvial plain and on deltas that flanked a large freshwater lake. The regional subsurface distribution and configuration of the lignite-bearing strata are identified within the context of depositional systems and placed into a genetically defined stratigraphic framework. The stratigraphic and depositional models constructed, should form an integral part of the geological assessment process to guide future regional or mine based lignite drilling programmes. Further testing and evaluation of the commercialy important lignite deposits in the Blackstone and Roxburgh Coalfields are required to adequately characterise the lignites and their geological setting, particularly to select methods of mining and wise uses of the lignite.

Bulk sampling programs are typically applied in coarse gold mineralised systems to verify resource/reserve grades. In recent years, there have been controversies surrounding some results of underground bulk sampling exercises compared to the predictions using diamond drill data. Just how realistic is it to predict 100 t lots from drilling that was designed to model blocks of several thousand tonnes? This study looks at the variation of relatively small units within larger planned mining units and compares some of the geostatistical techniques which purport to provide tools for such studies. Relative difficulty of application, computer timings and summaries of results will be used to illustrate the likely variation in bulk sampling units as opposed to mining units and large-scale planning units. A case study based on publicly available data from a gold project in North America is presented. A simplistic and unconditional geostatistical simulation model demonstrated that up to 50 per cent of a relatively high-grade mining block could show as uneconomic low-grade subblocks. A subsequent study will consider a similar demonstration using uniform conditioning. Erroneous impressions of early sampling results can lead to unsupported prejudgements of the final results. Bulk sampling programs require detailed planning based on ore characteristics, where protocols must fit the mineralisation type. Any program requires definition of aims and data quality objectives across grade, geological, geotechnical and geometallurgical parameters.CITATION:Clark, I and Dominy, S C, 2017.
