THIS paper does not deal with all sands used in the glass industry in Missouri; it covers only that used in the plate-glass factory at Crystal City. However, it is probably safe to say that other sands, produced throughout the state for this purpose, are of identical nature. The glass sand used in Missouri is commonly called the St. Peter deposit, which is ascribed to the Ordovician Rock series in the form of sandstone. This St. Peter deposit, aside from a few small outliers, covers a large area of eastern Missouri. It forms, through a broad curve, the northeast margin of the typical Ozark region between Cape Girardeau on the southeast and Mineola, Montgomery County, on the northwest. The belt is extremely irregular, varying from one to ten miles in width; its length is 150 miles in a straight line. The outcrop near the entrance to the Crystal City mine appears in the form of a sandstone bluff approximately 30 ft. high, running along Plattin Creek (Fig. 1). Above the sand rock an overburden of Joachim limestone appears, which thickens to nearly 300 ft. and forms the hill commonly called Buck Knob. In terms of a Research Proposals supported by a Grant Agreement dated 30 June 1973, the author was commissioned to prepare an annotated bibliography of mine fires. The main objective was to conduct a comprehensive program of library research and search of official files to prepare a list of articles dealing with actual occurrences of mine fires. This bibliography as now completed includes an annotated reference from each article or report cited, underlining the cause, extent, methods used, procedural errors made, results achieved, ventilation effects, and lessons learned from the operation of subduing the particular fire.

Carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced metallic composites have been recently generating significant scientific interest, due to their expected superior properties compared with other composites. Out of the metallic matrices investigated for reinforcement with CNTs, aluminum has received considerable attention. A major problem has been the dispersion of CNTs in metallic matrices. This paper discusses preliminary results on the mechanical dispersion of CNTs in aluminum powder, powder processing, stability and characterization of aluminum dispersed with CNTs at reinforcement levels equal to and below 5 wt.%.

During the process of developing surface or underground mines, some sites are considered for dumping of surface soils, while others are applied to reclaiming surface and waste disposal. For each kind of overburden, whether it be waste rock, low-grade material, or process tails, a separate storage site is considered so that it becomes possible to transport or recover the overburden separately. Decision-making must be completed by means of a selection process which takes into account the best methods of alternative sets in order to achieve these goals. This decision- making involves many parameters that are inter-related in that changes in some parameters affect the others. There are many methods of decision-making, however, Fuzzy Multi-attribute Decision-making (FMADM) and its functions are studied in this paper. The advantages of this method lies in its theoretical background, formulation, revising capability, unlimited alternatives, and consideration of the counteraction of the different parameters upon one another.

Similar to the case of any other business venture, the activities of mining industries are profit-oriented. Nothing will stop successful businesses in their quest for new localities to be prospected for minerals of their choice, because the useful economic life of any mine is limited. Before starting the process of land acquisition, it is important for any mining company to be able to forecast the profitability of the venture. The focus of this paper has been on the prospects of success, concerning the case of the opencast extraction of aggregates for construction. A set of 70 successful and loss-making quarries was subjected to investigation. An international company owns the quarries, which are located in seven European countries. The method of discriminate analysis provided the criteria for assessing future economic performance. The same criteria served the purpose of classifying other quarries belonging to the company.

CONSIDERABLE progress has been made during the last few years in analyzing the action of plastic deformation in metallic crystals. This is due largely to the development of X-ray spectrographic methods for studying changes in the orientation of single crystals, or of conglomerates, as they occur during the process of plastic deformation, but partly to the widespread knowledge of suitable technique for preparing large (single or variously combined) crystals for direct crystallographic observation under stress or in various conditions of strain. These two methods of studying changes in the crystalline structure of metals may of course be used in conjunction with features of mutual support, but unfortunately the advantage of direct crystallographic observation is lost when we proceed to the study of severely cold-worked structures, owing to the occurrence of real or apparent crystalline discontinuities which become more and more complicated as the amount of plastic action increases. Furthermore, the X-ray methods do not appear to be adequate, at least in their present stage of development, to fix definitely the character of structural alteration in the parent crystal lattice by plastic deformation. The principal question at issue concerns the nature of the crystalline particles that remain after plastic deformation. These are generally known in our American metallurgical literature as crystalline fragments,' and they seem, indeed, to diffract as individuals causing the Hull pattern of a severely cold-worked metal to resemble the pattern of a fine powder,2 with certain features of preferred orientation among the particles deter- mined by the manner and intensity of cold working. We must freely concede that there are conceptions of lattice alteration, apart from that of simple fragmentation, which would account for an increasing number of lattice positions according to X-ray spectrographic observation as the degree of deformation increased.

Several Approaches to Enhance the Bioleaching of Enargite Some approaches were investigated to enhance the recovery of Cu from enargite by bioleaching with Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans using the galvanic interaction with pyrite and activated carbon, and with thermophilic bacteria, Acidianus brierleyi. Addition of pyrite initially enhanced Cu leaching by the Galvanic effect, but after that the formation of secondary minerals passivated the surface of enargite in inoculated batches. Activated carbon improved Cu recovery from enargite much better than pyrite, when it is contacted with enargite. Recovery of Cu from enargite has been recorded to at largest 2.4 per cent within 30 days in the presence of activated carbon when mesophilic bacteria were inoculated at 25¦C. The recovery of Cu from enargite was drastically enhanced by inoculation of thermophilic bacteria, Acidianus brierleyi, up to 60 per cent within 40 days at 70¦C and still not leveled off after 40 days unless the formation of Fe(III) precipitates occurred. After 40 days dissolved molar ratio of Cu/As is around 5.2, suggesting that metal-deficient sulfides and/or ferric arsenate might be formed on the surface of enargite.

A study was conducted to investigate high gold grades in water lines and carbon fines collected from the Musselwhite gold recovery circuit. It was discovered that fine magnetic particles in the overflow from the carbon fines settling tank launder had high gold grades ranging from 2,000 to7,000 g/t. The -37 micron fraction had up to 17,000 g/t gold. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the gold was attached to the surface of iron particles. The objective of the study was to identify possible mechanisms that result in the attachment of the gold to the magnetic iron particle surface and to recommend process modifications that would reduce these types of gold losses around the carbon circuits. Solid and solution samples were collected from the gold recovery circuit and analysed. Two possible mechanisms were identified including gold cementation onto iron and heterocoagulation of colloidal gold onto iron oxides in the elution column. Possible sources of the colloidal gold include reduction of gold cyanide complex to metallic gold in the carbon regeneration kiln and gold detached from cathode in EW cell. Based on SEM+EDX, the sources of iron were natural magnetite and roasted iron sulphides. Thermal reduction of gold is believed to be the cause of dendritic gold from the carbon regeneration kiln.

In 1939, American industry got, off to a poor start, slowed down further during the first quarter, quickened after May, speeded up still more when war broke out again in Europe, and ended the year at a pace close to an all-time record. The average index of general business activity for the entire year (105) was well ahead of that for 1938 (86), failed to equal that of 1937 (110), and fell behind the average for 1929 (119) by a wide margin. Health and safety indicators help mine sites predict the likelihood of an event, advance initiatives to control risks, and track progress. Although useful to encourage individuals within the mining companies to work together to identify such indicators, executing risk assessments comes with challenges. Specifically, varying or inaccurate perceptions of risk, in addition to trust and buy-in of a risk management system, contribute to inconsistent levels of participation in risk programs. This paper focuses on one trona mine’s experience in the development and implementation of a field-level risk assessment program to help its organization understand and manage risk to an acceptable level. Through a transformational process of ongoing leadership development, support and communication, Solvay Green River fostered a culture grounded in risk assessment, safety interactions and hazard correction. The application of consistent risk assessment tools was critical to create a participatory workforce that not only talks about safety but actively identifies factors that contribute to hazards and potential incidents. In this paper, reflecting on the mine’s previous process of risk-assessment implementation provides examples of likely barriers that sites may encounter when trying to document and manage risks, as well as a variety of mini case examples that showcase how the organization worked through these barriers to facilitate the identification of leading indicators to ultimately reduce incidents.

As it is probable that a large proportion of the members of the Institute attending this meeting are connected with the metalliferous side of mining, the writer thought that, as coal and coke are required for various purposes in considerable quantities by their companies, some particulars of the coal industry might be of interest, especially when visiting such an important coal-mining centre as Newcastle. It is proposed to deal with the matter from the mining and economic point of view, as the geology has been so well and exhaustively dealt with in various publications referred to in the bibliography at the end of this paper. In the immediate vicinity of the city of Newcastle the collieries are gradually being abandoned, and during the past few years the Wickham and Bullock Island, Stockton, Hetton, Newcastle Coal Mining Company's "B," and the Australian Agricultural Co's Sea pit, have disappeared from the coal-producing list of collieries. AIl of these collieries worked the Borehole seam, from which, up to date, the largest quantity of coal has been produced in the northern district.It is the bottom seam of any present commercial value in the Upper or Newcastle coal-measures, and although the coal-in this seam has not been entirely 'exhausted in the collieries referred to, they have been abandoned for various reasons. For example, although about 60% of the seam (18 to 20 ft. thick) was left in the workings in the form of rectangular pillars under the city of Newcastle, this was not sufficient to 1?revent'the subsidence which took place about twelve years ago.Again, large quantities of coal in the Borehole seam have been left to protect the shipping arrangements at the Dyke, and other...

The end of an era is here. The pony-express era of industrial relations in the coal industry is ending. Those professionals who know it must end to insure the industry's future are happy, relieved, but somewhat saddened. They are sad because it did have its elements of suspense, thrills, frustrations, and at times, plain fun. The days of the Company town are ended; the wildcats are declining; violence (while a big part of today's industrial relations) is beginning-to decline. The spirit of sound industrial relations is beginning to take hold. This has to happen for the industry to compete in today's economy and it is causing major changes for those who have grown accustomed to the pony-express type industrial relations.

This paper briefly describes the shaft, including sinking, steel sets and their installation, shaft equipment and winders.INTRODUCTIONThe New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd. Service Shaft is a vertical concrete-lined circular shaft, 20 ft. in diameter with -steel sets spaced at 12-ft. centres. The diameter of 20 ft. was established as the minimum that would enable the shaft both to house the proposed hoisting and service equipment and to satisfy ventilation requirements as a downcast airway. The 12-ft. set spacing was based on South African practice in similar types of shafts.The shaft extends from the surface to 28 ft. below No. 22 Level, a total depth of 3,194 ft. Sinking was commenced in September 1946, and equipping completed in January 1955. Initially the shaft was sunk and concrete-lined to a depth of 52 ft., using a stiff-legged crane and clam-shell grab for mucking. Operations were suspended at this depth to allow the installation of the steel sinking head-frame, winders and ancillary equipment.Sinking and concreting were recommenced after four months and continued to a depth of 1,035 ft. 6 in., where the shaft connected with a pilot opening. The concrete lining was poured as sinking progressed and was piped from the surface to this depth, after which all concrete was lowered in buckets and discharged through a distributor suspended in the shaft. A cycle of stripping to the pilot opening and concreting was continued until the shaft reached No. 22 Level. From this level the remaining 28 ft. was sunk full size. All plats were cut and concreted as sinking progressed.

By implementing a converter downstream of the reduction furnace it is possible to broaden the product range significantly. The converter can also successfully be used to strip furnace slag from chromium oxide. Some process alternatives and their economical, practical and environmental implications are studied using process models developed based on UHT?s long experience in stainless steelmaking, stainless steel process control and charge chrome refining. The California pesticide industry in 1962 consumed about 30,000 tons of clay, talc, limestone, diatomite, sulfur, and other minerals as fillers (carriers and diluents) in pesticide formulation. This was 10 percent of the U.S. filler requirement for pesticides. About two- thirds of the California total was supplied by a few local mineral producers; the remainder came mainly from Florida, Georgia, and Wyoming. The objectives of this report are to provide data on quantities, sources, specifications, and market conditions for minerals used as fillers by California pesticide formulators. The study disclosed that specifications for mineral fillers have become more rigid and formulators have become more numerous in recent years. During 1962 over 1,200 firms registered 16,000 pesticide products with the Bureau of Chemistry in California. Factors which will tend to diminish future need for mineral fillers include the trend toward greater use of organic sprays rather than dusts and further development of biological controls, such as the development of sterile insect strains.

This article deals with some of the civil engineering related problems to be encountered when offshore wind energy projects transform from prototype offshore wind energy converter farms, developed and installed during the 1990?s, to commercial farms that?s currently planned to be built. The offshore wind energy converter (OWEC) installations encounter a wide range of problems, only partial of these are geotechnical. In Europe both onshore and offshore wind farms have, from a historical point of view, usually been founded by using the monopole technique, installed with traditional impact hammers, or by using gravitational foundations. However, the rapid development of bigger turbines and larger wind farms, together with increasing considerations of fatigue aspects, has lead to financial benefits of developing and exploring other foundation techniques. This paper reviews some Scandinavian experiences regarding critical components of the design phase in relation to connecting the superstructure to the ground, and some of the main considerations of how the loads applied to the structure are transferred to the surrounding soil.

In coal mines equipped with electrically driven mechanical mining equipment, the problem of protection for electrical circuits and machinery important, because the hazards of fires and explosions resulting from electrical failures is greater than in most other industries. There is need for better methods and improved protective devices for this service. Studies and tests designed to determine possible value of the short-circuiting contactor as an electrical device for coal mine service were investigated. Preliminary made to determine the operating characteristics of the device, after which tests were made under actual service in three coal mines. Ordinarily, electrical protection in coal mines is divided into three classes, as follows: 1. Overload protection that is intended to protect against damage from overheating and excessive mechanical strain due to overloading. 2. Short-circuit protection that provides a means of de-energizing the equipment instantly when an accidental short circuit occurs in the equipment or on the power system. Short cm protection tends to damage from fires and, explosions resulting in the dissipation of large amounts of electrical energy in a short circuit. 3. Ground fault protection that, in its various forms, is intended, to maintain the frames of electrical equipment at or near the same potential surfaces in contact with the earth for the purpose of safe-guarding human life.

Electrochemical processes occur on nano-, micro- and macro- scale in numerous applications such as fuel cells, batteries, hydrogen production, mineral extraction, water treatment, electrotherapy, sensors and many others. In most of these applications, gases evolve either at one or both electrodes due to electrolysis. These gases form bubbles play a crucial role in electrochemical systems. For example, in electrowinning (EW) that is used to extract and refine metals such as Cu, Zn, Ni, Mn, and Cd from their solutions, in most cases the solution is acidic and oxidation of water molecules at the anode is the common counter reaction, which results in the liberation of oxygen bubbles. This generally requires a high overpotential and accounts for a considerable percentage of the energy consumed in metal EW electrolytic cells, apart from producing acid mist that is very corrosive for other cell equipment and building structures. The behaviour of bubbles in electrochemical systems is still a complex challenging topic which requires a better understanding of gas bubbles hydrodynamics and their interactions with electrode surface and bulk liquid, as well as between the bubbles themselves. The objective of the current paper is to briefly review the fundamental hydrodynamics of both gas bubbles on the electrode surface and gas bubbles interaction with the liquid bulk solution. The current work also investigates the impact of gas bubbling and some operating parameters in copper EW, such as current density (100-500 A/m2), temperature (25-75ºC), acidity (50-300 g/L) and a typical chemical mist suppressant (<50 ppm). The results clearly show that both suppressant and temperature reduced the overall surface tension of the solution. Also, chloride concentration and applied current improved electrolyte flow and copper quality at higher current densities. The current paper contributes to the development of mineral processing (specifically to copper hydrometallurgy), as it deals with fundamental hydrodynamics and interactions of gas bubbles that formed during copper EW and play a crucial role in copper electrochemical systems.
