THE mineral industries in this country have now had about a year of national planning. Al. though the period is short, the volume of activity and legislation designed to make that planning effective has been nothing short of enormous. Those who have been privileged to see and study a few of the codes to regulate our mineral industry, such as those for oil, coal, steel, and copper, are driven to the conclusion that nothing was really known about the proper way to conduct those industries in this country prior to June, 1933; or if anything was known, nobody in actual practice made use of that knowledge. And yet those industries, in days gone by, helped to make this country the most prosperous in the world, and to maintain a standard of living even today higher than that of any other country. Without wishing to assume any first-hand knowledge of the Russian standard of living, I must confess that the evidence seems to indicate that even with dictatorial authority, national planning encounters unexpected difficulties. "Why do some room and pillar retreat panels encounter abnormal conditions? What factors deserve the most consideration during the planning and execution phases of mining and what can be done to mitigate those abnormal conditions when they are encountered? To help answer these questions, and to determine some of the relevant factors influencing the conditions of room and pillar (R&P) retreat mining entries, four consecutive R&P retreat panels were evaluated. This evaluation was intended to reinforce the influence of topographic changes, depth of cover, multiple-seam interactions, geological conditions, and mining geometry.This paper details observations made in four consecutive R&P retreat panels and the data collected from an instrumentation site during retreat mining. The primary focus was on the differences observed among the four panels and within the panels themselves. The instrumentation study was initially planned to evaluate the interactions between primary and secondary support, but produced rather interesting results relating to the loading encountered under the current mining conditions. In addition to the observation and instrumentation, numerical modeling was performed to evaluate the stress conditions. Both the LaModel 3.0 and Rocscience Phase2 programs were used to evaluate these four panels. The results of both models indicated a drastic reduction in the vertical stresses experienced in these panels due to the full extraction mining in overlying seams when compared to the full overburden load. Both models showed a higher level of stress associated with the outside entries of the panels. These results agree quite well with the observations and instrumentation studies performed at the mine.These efforts provided two overarching conclusions concerning R&P retreat mine planning and execution. The first was that there are four areas that should not be overlooked during R&P retreat mining: topographic relief, multiple-seam stress relief, stress concentrations near the gob edge, and geologic changes in the immediate roof. The second is that in order to successfully retreat an R&P panel, a three-phased approach to the design and analysis of the panel should be conducted: the planning phase, evaluation phase, and monitoring phase."

In Australia, responsibility for abandoned mines can be unclear. With a few exceptions, state and territory governments have become responsible for abandoned mines on Crown land and private landholders are responsible for abandoned mines on freehold land. Abandoned mines pose risks and opportunities across the full suite of sustainability themes (environmental, human health and safety, socio-economic and community development) after mining ceases.Across Australia, there are more than 50 000 abandoned mines recorded, ranging in size from individual shafts to large polluting open cut mines. Addressing the safety and environmental impacts of these sites, as well as the socio-economic development opportunities of significant rehabilitation projects, requires the implementation of effective policies and programs. Qualitatively defined graded scales or ‘rubrics’ have been used for many years in student assessment and increasingly in the performance assessment of other sectors (Davidson, 2005). While risk-based maturity models have been used for safety prioritisation (Westrum, 1993; Hudson, 2007; DRET, 2008; Hancock, 2010) and evaluation of organisational development (Esteves et al, 2010), this paper is the first to adapt maturity models for the evaluation of abandoned mine rehabilitation programs in Australia.In this paper, we used indicators based on the national policy for abandoned mines to assess the maturity of abandoned mine programs. Fourteen elements of maturity were identified (Unger et al, 2012) under the five chapters of the national policy for abandoned mines (MCMPR and MCA, 2010). Jurisdictions were then evaluated and ranked on their maturity on the basis of information that was web-accessible. Information transparency of abandoned mines policies and programs is in itself one element of the maturity chart. Each jurisdiction in Australia was compared with one another and with a Canadian jurisdiction; the British Columbia (BC) Crown Contaminated Sites Program (CCSP), which represents leading practice (Unger, 2009; Unger et al, 2012).Our research found that in some jurisdictions in Australia there is little or no information on abandoned mine programs or individual abandoned mine sites on government websites, while other jurisdictions provided very detailed program information on planning, funding and implementation. Each jurisdiction in Australia, for which web-based information was available, had some elements where they were more mature than other Australian jurisdictions. For some elements, maturity ranked equivalent to the BC CCSP, but most Australian jurisdictions were less mature. There was only one element where a single Australian jurisdiction ranked higher than the BC program in maturity. Legacy mine policies, programs, priorities and funding information via departmental websites are easier to find in some jurisdictions, indicating progression toward greater transparency and more mature programs. A systematic approach to monitoring and evaluating abandoned mines programs is essential for accountability as it can demonstrate liability reduction over time and continual improvement. Cessation of mining on the Bendigo goldfield makes it evident that, as the older generation fades away, knowledge of the famous Bendigo saddle reefs will be limited in the future by their written records. It is important therefore that the summarised account by D. E. Thomas (1953) in the Geology of Australian Ore Deposits should not be misleading. Fig. 6 in this article is stated to portray a cross section and longitudinal section through a series of gold shoots in the Garden Gully 300 ft. reef. The gold shoot along the capof the saddle reef is represented as extending down the east leg in a series of prongs, with the tips of the prongs about 50 ft. apart. It is the purpose of this note to indicate that this illustration can be suspected to be a diagram of the old stopes instead of a diagram of the distribution of gold in the quartz.The original sketches of Figs. 6 and 7 in Thomas' account were extracted, I believe, from the field note books of H. S. Whitelaw, years after his death in the late twenties. Whitelaw was stationed in the Bendigo office of the Geological Survey of Victoria, carrying out geological surveys of the Bendigo mines. He was there for many years before the Gold Research committee started its investigations in 1916 and he was acutely aware of the problem attached to the distribution of gold in the reefs. He had felt concern that manyauriferous reefs were being mined without adequate study and record and he decided, as he expressed it to me, to pick up what he could as he went along. There can be little doubt that the diagrams of Figs. 6 and 7 are products of this resolve.Opportunities to investigate gold occurrences at Bendigo were limited before 1916 because the field was operated by Manuscript received at The Institute 18th November, 1960.

This report describes a computer program devised by the Bureau of Mines to model coal-mining situations where one or more panels encounter oil or gas wells. The program seeks in several hundred trials to evade the wells if possible or to minimize their influence by shifting or skewing the mine plan and/or adjusting the centerline dimensions of the entryways. Upon completion of computations, the program sorts the hundreds of models which have been tested, and lists the 10 best with their associated parameters. It also draws a mine plan of the best configuration, showing the entryways and crosscuts along with the "lost" coal remaining in the barrier pillars surrounding the various wells.

"The Zambian Copper mining industry as we know it today has its genesis from early in the 20th century in the 1920s. Consistent private sector-driven investment in the industry over a period of over 50 years in exploration, mine development and operation, development of minerals processing facilities, building of infrastructure for pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processing, with attendant support facilities, including building of whole new towns, resulted in copper production going from zero to a peak of 769 000 tons of copper in 1969. At the same time, the industry created jobs to the extent that in 1972 the industry had over 62 000 direct jobs. The industry was nationalized in 1973 and remained in government hands for just over 24 years. During this period, the industry experienced a serious decline in production levels, reaching the lowest level at the dawn of the 21st century in the year 2000 when production was 250 000 tons. In terms of jobs, an average of just under 2000 jobs were lost every year in the 24-year period, reaching just over 22 000 direct jobs in 2000. Following the return of Zambian politics to pluralism and liberalized economic policies, the government decided to privatize the mining industry. The process started in 1996 and by the year 2000 all the mining assets had been privatized. The new investors embarked on serious investment to upgrade the assets and to develop greenfield mining projects. Fourteen years later and investments of over USD 12 billion, the industry production levels increased year- on-year to reach a peak of 763 000 tons in 2013 with direct jobs reaching 90 000. This paper discusses the impact of the mining industry in Zambia on the economy in areas such as employment, support to other industries, direct contribution to the national gross domestic product (GDP), foreign exchange earnings and social amenities. The paper also focuses on the performance of the mines during these periods vis-à-vis mineral availability, mineral grades and complexity, new technologies and human capital. This is looked at particularly in the light of current challenges the industry is facing and makes suggestions on how the industry can be nurtured to continue being a major driver for the Zambian economy and a major player in the international copper mining business."

"Priming of filters with small pores is influenced by the surface tension of the liquid metal and may be complicated by freezing • Freezing followed by melting has been observed experimentally. This process has been modeled on the basis of one dimensional heat flow by radiation to the filter and by conduction in the metal. Also considered are super-heat of the metal and the initial filter temperature. The results of the model provide useful guidelines for the application of filters. IntroductionFiltration has been recognized as a valuable method of refining by removing suspended phases from liquid metals or alloys. Woven fiberglass type fabrics and wire screens were used initially in the aluminum industry. With the introduction of the ceramic filters that exhibit improved inertness and refractoryness, filtration has been introduced to higher melting alloys including cast irons, superalloys, stainless steels, as well as low and medium carbon low alloy steels. A considerable literature is delveloping rapidly on the progress in applications and the advances in understanding the mechanisms and effectiveness of filtration processes (1-8).With the use of filtration for different alloy systems for the production of cast to shape parts a bewildering variety of gating system modifications has been developed (Figure 1) to accommodate the installation of filters in the mold. 1. “Daisy-Chain” concept The term “daisy-chain” stems from the fact that when the HotShot? detonators are connected there is a chain or electrical path for electrical current to flow from detonator A to detonator B, detonator B to detonator C etc until the path is terminated by an electrical means. With the current economic situation, the demand for nickel and other base metals has fallen significantly. More than 440 kt/yr world nickel capacity has been taken out of production within the last year, or more than 25% of the total [1]. This situation is similar to that at the end of 1970?s and it will take a number of years for the demand to recover to the levels before the economic downturn. In the meantime, the challenges facing the industry have increased due to diminishing ore grades, more inaccessible and complex deposits, mounting capital and operating costs and the various external pressures which include socio-economic, environmental, and energy challenges. All industries will be faced with paying the ?total ownership costs? in the future. This will only increase the burden on the industry. How to cope with this in what Thomas Friedman calls the ?Energy-Climate Era? [2] will be the most pressing challenge for the next generation of metallurgists and managers. It will force us to take a broader view of the problems and the solutions beyond mere technical. The metallurgists, engineers and project managers will have to look at the overall projects and their objectives in designing the solutions, requiring a top-down strategic approach.

In today's fast-track construction environment, owners are searching for non-conventional technologies to build their projects faster and safer while maintaining traffic flow during construction. To that end designers and contractors are providing solutions that incorporate many unique features to expedite construction processes. In addition to timely delivery of the finished highway products, there is an increasing interest in making the initial investment in applying innovative technologies and thereby minimizing costly maintenance of highway projects. Accordingly, the aim of this paper (along with the accompanying paper) is to examine innovative technologies, developed mostly in Europe, that accelerate construction of highway, runway and railway embankment foundations. For each technology, a basic concept, installation technique(s), and design considerations are discussed, along with the case history of a real-world project. The Geotextile Encased Columns (GEC), AuGeo, and Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) are presented in Part I. Deep Mixing (DM), Mass stabilization, Cut-Mix-Injection (FMI), and Combined soil Stabilization with Vertical columns (CSV) technologies are discussed in Part II.

NIOSH and the Illinois Clean Coal Institute are funding studies on characterization of coal and quartz dust in Interior Basin mines since 2009. Coal dust characteristics vary significantly and, are vital for the development of the engineering controls. This paper presents wettability characteristics of coal dust with respect to its chemical and physical properties, since wettability is considered to be a primary dust control technique. Particle size distribution, inter-particle interactions during wetting and quartz associations with organic and inorganic matter in coal seams is critical for understanding wetting phenomena. Silica content in the un-wetted fractions was found to be very high during wetting tests. Wetting of quartz may be limited by its association to hydrophobic materials as well as buoyancy forces resulting from particle size characteristics and particle-particle interaction in the wetting agent. Temperature of the wetting solution and effective contact time between dust particles and water droplets are found to be two important variables affecting the wettability. The characterization data obtained from this study can be utilized to develop engineering controls.

The key aspects of process metallurgy that distinguish platinum group metal (PGM) concentrate smelting from that of other base metal sulphide concentrates are presented. These differences include considerably higher input chrome and magnesia contents that directly raise the slag liquidus temperature and have the potential to increase accumulations of refractory spinels. Most importantly, the higher processing temperature required for PGM smelting, and the resulting very high matte superheat lead to considerably more onerous smelting conditions than those typical of other smelting operations. This has presented challenges to furnace design and integrity, especially when coupled with the progressive intensification of smelting, involving doubling, and then redoubling, of furnace power input over the past 20 years. These power increases have been enabled by increasingly more advanced furnace cooling and structural technologies. Key technologies include strong constant-force spring-loaded bindings acting in three dimensions to minimize infiltration of superheated matte into brick joints, and robust well-cooled tapholes for reliably tapping the superheated matte. The result has been substantially improved productivity, and reduced smelting capital cost outlay per unit of production. A significant challenge that was not anticipated, presented itself in the form of insidious corrosion of the furnace lining, and especially high-intensity copper cooling elements. Investigation of corrosion in related industries eventually identified 'chloride-accelerated sulphidation', and this term has been retained as it generically describes the most pertinent aspects of the accelerated low-temperature wear of copper coolers observed in PGM smelting. In addition to discussing the corrosion mechanism, this paper describes a number of solutions that were developed jointly by Anglo American Platinum and Hatch to address the copper corrosion problem. First, new monitoring technologies allowed furnaces to be operated more safely for a longer period of time. Second, a system for replacing corroded coolers from outside the furnace during a fast 'hot' shutdown minimized the impact on furnace operating factor and hearth life. Finally, a corrosion-resistant graphite-protected cooler design significantly improved furnace campaign life, and heralds a more lasting solution to cooler corrosion in PGM furnaces.

As an alternative to heavy water cooling, reactors cooled by organic liquids are being actively developed in Canada under the sponsorship of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. One of the areas in which development has been required is that of core materials. The factors affecting the selection of fuel canning and coolant tube materials are discussed. It is shown that S.A.P. is a potentially attractive material for these applications. The fabrication of fuel sheathing is discussed. Difficulties met due to large inclusions and blistering due to high hydrogen contents have been overcome by magnetic separation and vacuum sintering of the powders. High-quality tubes can now be produced by extrusion to finished size. A study has been made of the mechanical properties of fuel-sheathing tubes and bar stock. The stress rupture properties of the tubes subjected to uniaxial and biaxial stress have been determined. The biaxial stress tests were performed by internal pressurization. Introduction So many minerals and mineral products are used in the glass industry that it would require an unduly long paper to deal adequately with all of them. Only those that go to make up the batch for the more common types of glass will be discussed here, and even with these only, the list is a lengthy one. It is true that for the body of the glass comparatively few materials are required-as silica sand, soda-ash, lime, and feldspar. The others are used mainly to colour or decolorize the glass, or to give it some other desired characteristic, such as high lustre, greater physical strength, or opalescence; but, although they may be present in very small quantities, they are just as in-dispensable to the glass industry as are the main constituents of the batch. Sand Sand is essentially quartz, the dioxide of silicon, Si02. Most glass contains from 71J to 75 per cent silica. Sand for use in the glass industry, or 'glass sand', is obtained both from deposits of unconsolidated material, commonly referred to as 'sand', and from solid rock-sandstone, quartz, or quartzite. For the manufacture of glass, the material must possess a high degree of purity, as noted below, so that, although sand is widespread in most parts of the world, and sandstone, quartz, and quartzite are not at all uncommon, it is only in certain places that suitable deposits are found. At the present time, most of the glass sand used in Canada is imported from France, Belgium, and the United States. The French material, from Fontainebleau, near Paris, is known the world over as a very high quality glass sand. That from Belgium is nearly as good and is lower is price.

The coal mining industry in the western United States is seeing the same boom as the rest of the country and the world. Most coal mines in the West are operating flat out as the nation’s appetite for energy continues to grow. And many of the coal mines have either increased their production capacities or are in the process of doing so. However, transportation issues along with environmental restrictions are keeping many mines from expanding even further. Some coal companies held off on further expansion plans until Congress and President Bush could agree on a national energy policy, one that recognizes coal as the nation’s leading source of electricity. In August, Congress passed and the president signed into law such a measure (see Washington Survey, page 7). The legislation includes research funding for clean coal technologies. So western and eastern coal could become even more important in the national energy picture. This is particularly true as supplies of natural gas diminish and the price of oil continues to increase.

However, the increased use of diesel equipment has exacerbated the pollutant load (including heat, humidity, exhaust gases and particulates) placed upon the environmental systems of many underground operations. This expansion in the use of diesel equipment has prom pted researchers to evaluate m easure ment and control technology. This paper reviews the recent research conducted in various countries.

This paper presents the preliminary test results obtained using a 0.38-kg/s (3,000-lb/hr) beta prototype MagMill. In processing Upper Freeport coal, the beta prototype recovered 82 % of the weight of the feed and 91 % of the heat content while reducing the potential emissions of sulfur by 61%. Pyritic sulfur in the MagMill product was reduced by 78% compared with that in the feed. For all runs, the mill product particle size was controlled to between 70% and 80% -741m (200 mesh). Recoveries of mercury, arsenic and selenium ranged from 35% to 45% of the amounts found in the feed. Power draw was reduced by 26%, and mill throughput was increased by 9% compared to the pulverizer operating with no magnetic separator attached.

"Accurate on-line assays of mineral slurries are the basis for effective operation of flotation circuits. Typically the elemental content measurements are obtained by an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzer, which samples the process lines and performs the analysis concurrently line-by-line. For a more frequent measurement of each slurry line the XRF measurements can be complemented with reflectance spectrum information. In reflectance spectroscopy the absorbance properties of the slurry in the visible and near-infrared wavelength range are analyzed. The advantage of reflectance spectroscopy is that measurements can be obtained quickly and simultaneously from several slurry lines. However, since the shape of the spectrum is only indirectly affected by the slurry elemental contents, frequent calibration of the measurement against the XRF analyzer is necessary. This study elaborates the combination of reflectance spectrum analysis with XRF. Results of laboratory tests for different slurries are presented and the operation of the system in a copper-zinc flotation plant is demonstrated.IntroductionElemental analysis of mineral flotation slurries is the most important factor in evaluating the performance of concentration processes. Timely on-line assays are also used as the basis for controlling the circuits and ensuring that the grade and recovery targets are reached. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is the dominant technology in on-line elemental slurry analysis, and typically centralized XRF analyzers are used. The advantage of a centralized analyzer is that one measurement probe can be used to acquire the data from several slurry lines. This reduces the overall operating cost of the system when compared to distributed analyzer system design with several measurement probes requiring maintenance and spare parts. Slurry samplers are installed in the interesting process flows and representative sample flows are brought to the analyzer, where the slurry is further sampled and measured consecutively by the XRF analyzer. Due to the centralized structure of the analyzers and consecutively measurement of the sampling lines the sampling interval per slurry line can be relatively long. In larger concentration plants with several sampling lines a typical assay interval is in the range of 10-20 minutes."

Tungsten is the principal mineral commodity in the Laurel-McGee RARE II area; copper and molybdenum would be recovered as by-products with the tungsten. Indicated and inferred tungsten marginal reserves at the Hard Point Mine (fig. l, no. 10) are 16,000 tons (14,000 t) averaging 1.0 percent tungsten trioxide (W03). The mine is outside the RARE II area, but the geologic structure that it is on extends into the area. Indicated subeconomic zinc, silver, copper, and lead resources at the Lucky Strike Prospect (fig. 1, no. 7) are nearly 6,200 tons (5,600 t) averaging 5.45 percent zinc, 0.5 oz silver per ton (19 g/t), 0.40 percent copper, and 0.32 percent lead. Although tungsten has been produced at the Tiptop Mine (fig. 1, no. 12), resources were not calculated because of the spotty nature of the tungsten mineralization. Additional exploration at the Tiptop and Hard Point Mines could reveal significant resources. The potential for tungsten resources at the Payday Prospect, Tungsten Prospect, and Morhardt Mine is also high. The Pine Creek Mine custom mill, located about 35 mi (56 km) southeast, could process tungsten concentrates from the area. Tungsten production has been recorded from three properties, the Hard Point, Morhardt, ant Tiptop Mines. Output was about 405,000 lb (184,000 kg) of W03, nearly all from the Hard Point.

Wet concentrate is received from various concentrators along the Eastern Bushveld Complex, with 60% of the total concentrate received being from UG2 reef and 40% from Merensky reef. The concentrate grade differs from 35 g/t to 110 g/t, and from this a PGM-rich nickel-copper matte is produced. The furnace matte produced is sent to the ACP converter in Rustenburg. The Anglo Platinum concentrators, from which concentrate is received, are Lebowa, Potgietersrus, Amandelbult, and Union, as well as the joint venture Modikwa. The concentrate is fed to two flash dryers that utilise coal-fired, fluidized-bed hot-gas generators to produce the hot gas that will drive off the moisture, leaving a fine bone-dry concentrate to feed to the furnace. The dry concentrate is pneumatically transferred to a storage silo before being transferred to the feed bins situated above the furnace. Lime, if required as a flux, may be transferred separately to the furnace feed bin by a pneumatic system. The concentrate and lime is fed from the feed bins onto airslides and into the furnace. The feed rate is automatically controlled, and the system is set up to optimize the power to feed ratio. The electric furnace is nominally rated at 68 MW and the power is transferred into the furnace using six 1.6 m diameter Söderberg electrodes. Concentrate is melted by energy generated when electric current passes through the electrodes and resistive slag layer. On melting, two immiscible phases form: slag and matte. Furnace matte, containing the bulk of the base metal sulphides and PGMs, is denser than slag and collects naturally at the bottom of the furnace. The furnace is constructed of a combination of refractory brick and water-cooled copper coolers. The furnace sidewalls and hearth are cooled by air drawn through the area by cooling fans. The hearth and matte zone are constructed from refractory bricks. The copper coolers reside only in the slag zone of the furnace along the entire perimeter of the furnace. One staggered row of plate coolers is installed above the waffle coolers along the perimeter of the furnace. Matte is tapped periodically through one of the two matte tapholes into 35-ton refractory-lined ladles, and cast into matte ingots on a casting machine. The cooled matte is discharged onto a concrete slab for cooling and then transferred by front-end loaders to the crushing plant. The matte is first crushed in a jaw crusher and then a Rhodax cone crusher to a size of 2 mm before it is loaded into tankers and sent to the ACP. The low-grade slag is tapped from the furnace through a water-cooled copper insert into a short water-cooled copper ?hot launder? which discharges into a granulation cold launder. The granulated slag slurry flows to three rake classifiers, from which the coarse slag is discharged onto a conveyor to dewatering silos. The dewatered slag from the silos is dumped. The water overflow from the classifiers reports to two thickeners where the water is clarified, and the thickener underflow is returned to the rake classifiers. The smelter is a zero-effluent plant and all the water from the slag silos where the slag is dewatered, as well as the storm water, is pumped to the process water dam from where it is pumped back into the plant for process water use. The off-gas from the furnace is drawn through a forced draught cooler and into a high temperature baghouse. The dust collected in the baghouse is pneumatically transferred into bins above the furnace and is fed via the concentrate airslides. The cleaned off-gas is then vented through the main stack.
