The empirical equilibrium constantsd the heat of reaction for the reduction have been determined from 300° to 500°C. The mechanisms of the oxidation of uranium and magnesium from dilute bismuth solutions have been investigated. The kinetics of some of the reactions were affected by air adsorbed on the uranium oxides. THE Liquid Metal Fuel Reactor studied at Brook-haven National Laboratory uses a solution of uranium in bismuth as the fuel. Corrosion and stability problems require that the fuel solution contain corrosion inhibitors and deoxidants. Of the additives tested, magnesium has been found to be the best deoxidant and zirconium the best corrosion inhibitor in bismuth. Some experiments1 indicate that magnesium may play a secondary role in increasing the effectiveness of zirconium in inhibiting corrosion. The work reported here was intended to determine the relative concentrations of Mg and U required to prevent oxidation of the uranium fuel in the event of an air leak. In addition, an attempt was made to identify some of the mechanisms of the oxidation and reduction reactions occurring in the liquid bismuth solutions. EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus and Procedure—The equipment shown in Fig. 1 was designed so that the reaction kinetics could be studied as functions of temperature, melt composition, pressure, and flow rate. At the start of a run, the 10-liter bell jar (F) is removed by opening the bottom Dresser fitting (L), and the bismuth and additives are placed in a pyrex crystallizing dish (I). The bell jar is replaced, the system is evacuated to 10-5 to 10-6 mm Hg and then the heater (J) is turned on. When the selected temperature is reached, the oxidizing gas is admitted to the system to the desired pressure as read on the manometer (D). Gas is introduced through the slide tube (Q) which has a pyrex frit (R) sealed to its bottom. Stirring is accomplished by immersing the end of the tube in the melt. To maintain a constant pressure under flow the input and evacuation rates must be equalized. To obtain this condition stopcock (C) is closed and flowmeters (B) are matched. The reaction is "stopped" by closing the inlet flowmeter and quickly evacuating the system. To obtain a liquid metal sample, the system is evacuated with the sampler positioned near the surface of the liquid. The sampler, Fig. 2, is then immersed until its thermocouple reading matches thermocouple (G) Fig. 1. The system is then pressurized with helium which forces the solution through the frit. Twenty to 30 min elapsed between the time the system was evacuated and sampled. During evacuation and pressurization of the system, the temperature variations did not exceed ± 5°C. While bubbling occurred the temperature remained constant to within 1/2 oC. The volume of the equipment was determined by adding a known volume of air at atmospheric pressure to the evacuated system and noting the resulting pressure.

Students of the modern blast furnace seem unanimously agreed that they are observing a major revolution in practice. Rather than changing construction and operation of the furnaces, most of the great advances now under way deal with the raw materials feed. Prepared burdens have gained increasing significance during recent years. Sizing, concentration, and agglomeration have all become bywords to greater production and reduced operating costs. The remarkable results with test furnaces in which self-fluxing sinter makes up part or all of the ore charge foretell even greater improvements. Other investigators have reported many of these advances, and it is enough to predict here that more and more operators will turn to the use of self-fluxing sinter. This change in the operator's requirements comes at a time when one major section of the iron ore regions, the Mesabi, is finding it difficult to maintain, let alone improve, the tonnage and grade of its shipping product. To meet the new demands with respect to quality and structure, the iron ore producers of this area turned first to screening, crushing, and concentrating intermediate ores. More recently, declining higher-grade reserves have led to multimillion-dollar investments in plants to treat the low-grade magnetic taconites.1,2 To yield a suitable concentrate, the Minnesota magnetic taconites must be ground to about 80 pct through 325 mesh, too fine to be charged directly to the blast furnace or to make acceptable feed to the sinter strand. The pelletizing process was developed to meet the structure requirements laid down by the blast furnace operators. Taconite producers are succeeding in their efforts just when the attention of the blast furnace man is being drawn to the great advantages of self-fluxing sinter.3 The taconite operators are ready with an alternative. Why not produce sclf-flus ing pellets? At the Hibbing laboratory of Pickands Mather & Co., where much of the early work was done that led to Erie Mining's 7.5-million ton taconite plant at Hoyt Lakes, Minn., preliminary investigations have been made. Present Taconite Operations: Details of this work will be clarified by a brief review of agglomeration practice in commercial taconite plants. After the taconite has been ground to about 80 pct through 325 mesh to liberate the magnetite grains, the ore is concentrated on magnetic separators, thickened, and filtered to about 10 pct moisture. This structure and moisture fit in closely with the conditions required to produce good balls. It has been found with taconite concentrates that at least 60 pct of the feed to the balling drum must be —325 mesh to obtain good ball compaction within reasonable time. The filter cake moisture usually permits a slight water addition at the balling drum, and further balling control is obtained by adding about 12 Ib of bentonite and 1 1/2 lb of soda ash per dry short ton of concentrate. These additives, and occasionally small quantities of fine coal, are thoroughly mixed with the filter cake ahead of balling. The swelling property of bentonite improves the green and dry strength of the balls so they can be handled without breakage until they are fired. Soda ash is added for pH control to insure maximum performance of the bentonite, and coal is added for more heat in the firing process when required. The balls, normally 3/8 to l-in. diam, are brought to a temperature of 2350" to 2500°F in the indurating furnace. Heat for this process comes from three sources: 1) fuel burned in the combustion chamber, 2) oxidation of the magnetite concentrates to hematite, and 3) coal added to the balls. Pellet strength is developed by grain growth and bridging and, if enough slag-forming constituents are present, by slag bonding. Conversion to hematite is usually close to 100 pct in the fired pellets. Batch Test Procedures: Initial studies of self-fluxing pellets were made by producing balls on a batch basis under carefully controlled laboratory conditions. TOMBSTONE, a name not exactly full of cheerful suggestion, has a great record as a mineral producer and a colorful history as a frontier mining camp. The only practical route to Tombstone in the early 80's was by way of San Francisco and Los Angeles. The Southern Pacific was building across Arizona, and a sleeper was attached to a construction and freight train at Los Angeles, and was trailed slowly across the Colorado Desert to Benson in the San Pedro Valley. Thence one staged 26 miles to Tombstone, which is located near the foot of a range of hills at an altitude of about 4500 ft.

Several areas at the DOZ haulage were observed for the crusher’s location. Initially the new crusher designed position was west of the crusher 1, but due to concerns of the mine crack zone (deep MLZ) the crusher position moved to the south. The new crusher location is situated in a diorite rock massive between 3053 – 3079 levels, with the overall excavation of 2500 cum and dimension of 14m long, 14 m wide and 14 m high. Main Crusher chamber itself excavated by development jumbo in three lifts. Development of access to the bottom crusher was developing the same time as chambering the top crusher. The pocket of the crusher mined with vertical crater retreat system which is initiated in one time after middle slot raise. Collaboration between production and perimeter blast holes to be obtaining in control the actual cuts as per the design shape.

BARCUS AND SONS, INC. PROJECT PROFILE: 108-10 in. diameter AugerPiles installed to an approximate depth of 32 ft. Piles were installed through Stiff Clayey Fill and Medium-Dense Sands to Decomposed Shale. Piles were drilled to a refusal criteria of 1 ft. / 3 min. Piles were installed using a Barcus Mantis AugerPile rig which is large enough to install piles 25 to 50 ft. long outdoors. The Mantis is also ideal for indoor and low overhead installations. On top of being extremely versatile, the Mantis is also very economical to mobilize. The existing structure is supported on H-Piles. The AugerPiles were furnished and installed for less than the material price of the H-Piles. Design loads were under 40 tons which eliminated the need for a load test. AugerPiles were selected for minimal vibration, limited noise, and economy.

The recovery of gold by ore leaching is influenced by the size of the particles and the chemical environment. Within the experimental error associated to the testing of gold ore, results of a series of leaching tests conducted with natural ores rather than monosized samples confirm that gold dissolution increases with decreasing ore particle size. The tests also indicate that the dissolution of gold in the ore within a size interval is weakly affected by the intensity of the size reduction method.

Western Coalfield?s Tandsi Mine, has difficult support conditions and a history of roof falls, resulting in mining roadway widths and depths being restricted for safety reasons. Rock Mechanics Technology Ltd was contracted to improve the support system to allow the introduction of mechanised room and pillar mining. The introduction of a ?world best practice? bolting system resulted in major improvement in roof stability, allowing mining restrictions to be lifted and Tandsi to become one of the first two Indian mines to introduce a mechanised continuous miner system. The first year?s production was some six times previous levels. Because of the improvement in the support system, RMT was also able to design a partial de-pillaring system suitable for the Tandsi continuous miner districts together with the introduction of monitoring procedures and guidelines to maintain safe roof support conditions. In situ monitoring of pillar and roof behaviour was undertaken as the first pillars were extracted to confirm the design. De-pillaring operations have also proved highly productive, and to date there has been no associated support related major injury or dangerous occurrence. The success of this project demonstrates the potential for mechanised room and pillar mining in India.

Several Rockmass classification systems have been developed and used in Civil Engineering design and for underground mining operations. Some of these rockmass classification systems have been modified and used in the South African coal mining industry to quantify descriptive geological information for use in coal mine design and roof support selection. The Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) system developed in the USA has been investigated in detail as part of the study. Advantages and disadvantages of the system have been identified by means of underground and surface borehole testing. Investigations into the rating systems in South Africa found that most of the rating systems used in the South African coal mining industry are for planning purposes, and are conducted on borehole cores. This study also highlighted that the rating systems being used are based on geology, and that the human factor plays a major role in the rating systems. To overcome these problems, all the classification systems used in South African coal mines have been benchmarked against impact splitting technique and documented. The best elements of these systems are combined into a new standard system that will be easily used by all mine geologists and rock mechanics engineers. Plusieurs systèmes de classification de la masse rocheuse ont été développés et utilisés dans le Génie Civil et pour les opérations d'exploitation minière souterraine. Certains de ces systèmes de classification de la masse rocheuse ont été modifiés et utilisés dans l'industrie minière sud-africaine pour quantifier l'information géologique descriptive utilisée dans la conception de mines de charbon et la sélection de soutènement du toit. Le système d'Evaluation de Toit de Mine de Charbon (CMRR) développé aux USA a été examiné en détail, comme part de l'étude présente. Tests en surface de trous de mine ont permis d'identifier les avantages et inconvénients du système. Une étude des systèmes d'évaluation en Afrique du Sud a révélé que la plupart des systèmes d'évaluation utilisés dans l'industrie minière sud-africaine sont utilisés pour la planification, et sont menés sur les carottes de trous de mine. L'étude présente a aussi souligné que les systèmes d'évaluation utilisés sont basés sur la géologie, et que le facteur humain joue un rôle majeur dans les systèmes d'évaluation. Pour surmonter ces problèmes, tous les systèmes de classification utilisés en Afrique du Sud ont été référencés en termes de technique de fissuration sur choc, et documentés. Prüfungen der Bewertungssysteme in Südafrika ergaben, daß die meisten Bewertungssysteme die in der südafrikanischen Kohlebergbauindustrie benutzt werden, Planungszwecken dienen und werden anhand von Bohrlochkernen durchgeführt. Diese Studie hob auch hervor, daß die verwendeten Bewertungssysteme auf Geologie basieren und daß der menschliche Faktor eine Hauptrolle in den Bewertungssystemen spielt. Um diese Probleme zu überwinden, wurden alle in südafrikanischen Kohlengruben benutzte Klassifizierungssysteme vergleichsweise in Hinblick auf Spaltschlagtechnik überprüft und dokumentiert. Die besten Elemente dieser Systeme werden in ein neues Standardsystem kombiniert, das leicht von allen Grubengeologen und von Gebirgsmechanikingenieuren benutzt werden kann.

A sample of pyrrhotite flotation concentrate pulp assaying 15.3 g/t Au, which had been prepared from an old tailing dump, was treated to extract the gold. Examination of the concentrate with an SEM showed that exposed or free native gold, 5- 40 ¦m in diameter, was present but no locked gold was observed. Direct cyanidation of the concentrate to extract the gold showed that the flotation reagents present inhibited gold extraction. A range of pre-treatments was used to overcome these effects. Direct cyanidation for 48 h extracted only 26 per cent of the gold, indicating possible contamination of the gold in the concentrate with flotation reagents. Pre-treatment of the concentrate pulp by aeration for 24 h, or by 72 h aeration with an addition of 3.65 kg/t of sodium sulphite, gave little improvement in gold extraction by subsequent cyanidation. Pre-treatment by filtration, or by aeration with 12.5 L/t 100 volume hydrogen peroxide, followed by cyanidation for 48 h gave gold extractions in the range 67-77 per cent. Combining filtration and an aeration period with hydrogen peroxide addition raised the subsequent cyanidation extraction of gold to 88 per cent, giving a tailing assaying 1.5 g/t Au. Re-cyanidation of some of the dried tailings from the initial tests extracted most of the remaining gold giving a tailing assaying 0.5 g/t Au. This indicated that most of the gold was available for dissolution by cyanide. The poor dissolution of gold by cyanidation of the untreated concentrate was attributed to the presence of flotation reagents. It was shown by UV spectrometry that xanthate-containing compounds were present in the solids fraction of the original pulp and that they were partly removed by pre-treatment. MIBC was also present, and dithiophosphate, which was used in the flotation step, was also probably present. The results indicated that the improvement in gold extraction after filtration and oxidation of the original pulp was due to partial removal of the flotation reagents, and illustrates the detrimental effects that residual flotation reagents can have on the extraction of gold by cyanidation of a flotation concentration.

The problem of rock hang-ups in underground mining operations has been a continuing one since the days of the “hang-up man”. This position commanded the highest pay of any underground worker in many historical Western U.S. underground bulk-mining operations, due to the occupational hazards of the job. Although underground mining techniques and especially work practices have changed greatly since then, the hang-up problem is a continuing one in many mines which use gravity flow of coarse rock in their transport systems or in those mines where stressed ground causes rock slabs to spa11 and bridge rock passes and stopes. In addition, with mechanized underground open-stoping mining methods now being used in many different types of ore deposits worldwide, this problem has again emerged as a very significant one in many of these highly mechanized operations. This is especially so where the remote operation of loaders is used for removing blasted rock from underground open stopes.

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. Ore deposition was related to three major stages: continental rifting and separation (Vendian-Late Cambrian), convergence (Late Cambrian-Early Silurian) and collision (Early Silurian-Devonian). The first stage included deposition of volcanogenic massive sulphide Zn-Cu and stratabound or stratiform Fe and Zn-Pb(-Cu) on continental margins, as well as less economic Nb and Fe in carbonatites, U, Mo, Ni and V in Alum Shales and orthomagmatic Cr, Fe-Ti and Ni(-Cu). The numerous volcanogenic massive sulphides formed during convergence included Early Ordovician Cu-Zn, mature-arc Cu, Zn, Pb and Fe-oxide deposits, Besshi-type deposits dominated by Cu or Zn in gabbro-intruded sediments and minor Cu-Ni(-PGE), Cu-Mo and skarn deposits. "The most important metals in the jewelry sector are undoubtedly gold and silver. As a result of workmanship work done in the jewelry industry, the tiny metal and jewel fragments and metallic powders are scattered. Given the prices of gold and silver on the market, the dust that emanates from these workshops is of great importance. Gold recycling has become as important as raw material production within the mass market and gold production industry. In 2016, 29% of the world gold supply has been obtained through recycled gold production. Waste derived from jewelry activity is included in this category, and represents an essential component of this percentage. In the scope of this study, the recovery possibilities of Au and Ag from jewelry sweeps floor sample was investigated using flotation method. In the experiments, optimum pH value, particle size, the effect of dispersant, type and amount of reagent were investigated. As a result of these studies, it was determined that the optimum pH value was 6.5 and the particle size was -212 microns. It was observed that the most suitable reactive combination was Aero 242 and Aerophine 3418A and Na2SiO3 has no positive effect on recovery of Au and Ag as a dispersant agent. As a result of tests, a final concentrate containing 268 ppm Au and 2122 ppm Ag was obtained with 81.4% and 74.5% recovery respectively. INTRODUCTION Because of the softness of pure gold, it is usually alloyed with base metals for use in jewelry, altering its hardness and ductility, melting point, color and other properties. On the other hand, gold has some special chemical properties which in normal conditions, don’t react with water, dry or humid air, oxygen, ozone, nitrogen, hydrogen, fluorine, iodine, sulfur and hydrogen. In these days, gold is used in different sectors like jewelry, electronics, finances and investing, dentistry, medicine, aerospace, awards & status symbols. According to Deutsche Bank Research, the primary usage of gold is jewelry. It has been used to make ornament and jewelry for thousands of years. In this sector craftsmen learned that alloying gold with other metals like copper, platinum and silver to increase gold’s durability. Alloying gold with other metals changes the color of the products. Another significant sector of gold is electronics. Gold is the highly efficient conductor that can carry these tiny currents and remain free of corrosion. Electronic components made with gold are highly reliable. Gold is used in connectors, switch and relay contacts, soldered joints and connecting wires. Every sophisticated electronic device have a considerable amount of gold. This includes cell phones, calculators, personal digital assistants, GPS units, and other small electronic devices. Most large electronic appliances such as television sets also contain gold. Humankind has known silver since prehistoric times like gold because silver occurs in native form. The metal is found in the Earth's crust in the pure, free elemental form native, as an alloy with gold and other metals, and in mineral such as argentite. Most silver is produced as a byproduct of copper, gold, lead, and zinc refining. Silver is very soft metal like gold also, it is the highest electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and the lowest electrical contact resistance of all metals (Habashi, 1997). NINETEEN FORTY-SIX was an eventful year for the mineral industries. Perhaps the most significant development was the socialization of industry in Great Britain, initiated in 1945 but carried to fruition in the coal industry in 1946. On Jan. 1, 1947, management of the coal industry will be vested in a National Coal Board, responsible to the Ministry of Fuel and Power. A sum of £164,660,000 has been provided to compensate private owners for assets transferred to the Board. The British coal industry has been a problem for many years. Production has declined to a point where serious shortages of fuel for domestic needs have developed. Exports have dwindled to a small fraction of the previous trade. Costs have increased greatly, and quality has deteriorated. The industry's physical plant has not kept pace with the rapidly mounting wage scales in recent years. Some claim that the best and most accessible coal reserves of Britain are heavily depleted. The industry has been harassed by difficult labor problems, including bad morale among the workers and a shrinking labor force.
