A large wedge failure had occurred in the study area which was under construction. Therefore, in order to analyze the potential instability for this rock slope, the authors conducted numerical analysis with DEM and then the behaviour of rock mass was analysed after appropriate reinforce-ments were applied. Ein großer Keildefekt geschah in dem Untersuchungsgebiet, das im Bau befindlich ist. Deshalb, um die potentielle Unbeständigkeit für diesen Felsenabhang zu analysieren, führen die Urheber zahlenmäßige Analyse mit DEM. Und dann wird die Bewegung der Felsenmasse ana-lysiert, nachdem angemessene Verstärkungstruppen angewandt werden. Un grand échec de coin sèst passé dans le région étudié qui était en construction. Pt-based alloys are being developed for high-temperature applications with the aim of replacing some of the currently used Ni-based superalloys (NBSAs) in the highest temperature applications. The Pt-based alloys have a similar structure to the NBSAs, and since Pt is more chemically inert than nickel and has a higher melting point, they can potentially be used at higher temperatures, up to 1300°C, and in more aggressive environments. Several experimental Pt-based alloys were studied at Mintek, and an optimum composition was found to be Pt84:Ahi:Ru2:Cr3 (at.%). On the basis of hardness and microstructure, a later study identified a new optimum: Ptr8:A111:Ru5:Cr6 (at.%). There are at least two Pt3A1 allotropes, and the high-temperature cubic structure has better properties than the lower temperature tetragonal form, and so needs to be stabilized. This work describes the latest results obtained in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies of the quaternary Pt-based superalloys. These results are both interesting and important, because the samples have a higher precipitate density compared to those from earlier work. The precipitate morphology is mainly cubic, with minor areas having irregular-shaped precipitates. The high volume fraction of the precipitates is a major breakthrough, since the objective of this work is to improve the alloys. A prior disadvantage was that the proportion of the precipitates was too low in samples before this work, especially compared with the work from Germany on Pt-Al-Cr-Ni¬-based alloys as well as the NBSAs. TEM -Pt3A1 diffraction patterns were studied, and for each diffraction pattern, many possible lattice point combinations were tried, with the angle between the lattice spots as well as interplanar spacings being calculated for each phase (cubic or tetragonal) to match the measured results. An overall analysis of the diffraction results indicates that the cubic phase fitted the experimental lattice points with much lower errors compared to the tetragonal phase. Thus, with the close match achieved with the cubic structure, the structure of -Pt3A1 precipitates is likely to be cubic. X-ray diffraction has been carried out on selected samples, and the results confirmed the presence of cubic -Pt3A1 and (Pt). Different X¬ray diffractometers were used to further verify the results, and the results were also compared with those from TEM.

This paper deals with the influence from blast induced stress waves on the performance of shotcrete support in the Kiirunavaara mine. Time histories of stress waves from blasting were obtained from measurements during production blasts in the mine, followed by failure mapping. A finite element model, consisting of beam and spring elements, was used to calculate the shotcrete response to vibrations from blasting. The modelling approach was similar to that of a building during an earthquake, with accelerations measured in-situ used as loads. The analysis showed that the calculated adhesive stresses exceeded the strength in the interface between rock and shotcrete near to the blasted ring. It also indicated that tensile rock failure did occur. These types of failure will presumably result in ejection of joint defined rock blocks or rock slabs and will require a ductile support, such as fibre reinforced shotcrete. The predicted failure was confirmed by the mapping, which also showed that the zone of failed shotcrete was much larger in areas with plain shotcrete compared to areas with reinforced shotcrete. L’influence de l’onde de pression générée par les sautages à la mine de fer de Kiruna sur la performance du béton projeté est étudiée dans le présent article. Les ondes créées par les sautages ont été enregistrées et les domages résultants ont été cartographiés. La réponse du béton projeté aux vibrations de sautage est étudiée à l’aide d’un modèle d’éléments finis, constitué de poutres et de ressorts. L’approche est similaire à celle d’un immeuble subissant un tremblement de terre, avec les accélérations internes utilisées comme charges. L’analyse montre qu’à proximité des sautages, la contrainte adhésive dépasse la résistance de l’interface roche-béton. L’analyse confirme aussi l’existence de ruptures en tension. Ces types de rupture induisent probablement l’éjection des blocks définis par les structures du massif rocheux et requierent un support ductil, comme du béton projeté renforcé par exemple. Le type de rupture est confirmé par les observations de terrain, qui montrent aussi une extension plus importante des domages lorsque le béton projeté n’est pas renforcé. In diesem Konferenzbeitrag geht es um den Einfluss, der aus einer Sprengung hervorgerufenen Schwingungswellen auf die Ausführung der Spritzbetonverstärkung in dem Kiirunavaara Bergwerk. Die Aufzeichnungen der Schwingungswellen von Sprengungen gemäß einer Fehlerkartierung beziehen sich auf Messungen, die während der Sprengungen durchgeführt wurden. Ein Finite Elemente Modell, bestehend aus Stab- und Federelementen, wurde für die Berechnung der Spritzbetondeformation in Bezug auf die Schwingungen aus Sprengungen angewendet. Die Modellierungsmethode war ähnlich der eines Gebäudes während eines Erdbebens anhand der gemessenen Beschleunigungen vor Ort, die als Lasten benutzt wurden. Die Untersuchung hat gezeigt, dass die berechnete Haftspannung größer war als die Festigkeit in der Verbindung zwischen Gestein und Spritzbeton in der Nähe des Sprengungscentrums. Die Analyse hat gezeigt, dass die Zugfestigkeit des Gesteins versagte. Diese Arten von Versagen werden als Folge der Herausnahme von Gesteinsbrocken oder Gesteinsplatten erklärt und benötigen eine faserverstärkte Spritzbeton. Das vorausgesagte Versagen bestätigte sich beim Kartieren, welches auch zeigte, dass die Zone des versagenden Spritzbetons in Bereichen mit unverstärktem Spritzbeton viel größer war als in Bereichen mit armierten Spritzbeton.

This paper develops the themes explored by the authors at the Fourth International Platinum Conference,. Optimization techniques can be used to significantly increase the value of mining businesses by enabling better long-term planning decisions. Open pit and underground mine design, mine scheduling, cut-off grade and blending, stockpiling, and the linking of these to flexible elements of the metallurgical recovery processes are all evaluated together. Transport or sale of intermediate products and the requirements of the product metal markets can also be considered. Experience shows that net present value (NPV) can potentially be increased by 5-35 per cent or more, usually even before the expenditure of significant amounts of project capital. The case studies presented include: > An existing operation with multiple open pits and PGM concentrators linked to offsite downstream processing facilities, and with infrastructure constraints for which the scheduling of current operations and the potential for expansion were investigated > An existing operation with an integrated portfolio of mines, concentrators, smelter, and refinery, for which the various possible sources of ore for processing were prioritized to match the downstream process plant constraints and the product markets > An underground operation in Zimbabwe for which the optimum mining width was calculated and expansion plans were evaluated > An underground mine with many separate mining sections, for which a revised schedule was developed aiming to keep the shaft system and processing plant at capacity with the highest net value material available at any time throughout the life of mine. In the concluding section of the paper, a few brief notes are included suggesting how the strategic recommendations from enterprise optimization studies may be implemented by the owner's team.

Physical models from equivalent materials satisfying geometrical and physical similarity have been constructed. A special technology of simulating the excavation of an opening at the front part of a tunnel and of measuring the deformation at the tunnel face was applied. The results yielded by the physical models were used to formulate constitution relations in the numerical solution. This coupled modelling enables us to predict the behaviour of tunnel structures more accurately. On a construit des modèles physiques, réalisés en matériaux équivalents et répondant aux conditions de ressemblance géométrique et physique. Sur ces modèles, on a utilisé une technologie intéressante de simulation du forage du tunnel et de la mesure de déformation du front de taille pendant le forage en progression. Les résultats donnés par les modèles physiques ont été utilisés pour formuler les relations de constitution dans la solution numérique. Une telle construction de modèles combinés permet de prévoir plus précisément le comportement de la structure du tunnel. Es wurden physikalische Simulierungsmodelle aus äquivalenten Werkstoffen konstruiert, welche die Bedingungen der geometrischen und physikalischen Ähnlichkeiten erfüllen. Bei diesen Modellen hat man die interessante Simulationstechnologie des Tunnelvortriebs sowie die Verformungsmessung beim Tunnelabbaustoß während des Vortriebsvorgangs eingesetzt. Die Ergebnisse der physikalischen Simulation wurden zur Formulierung von Konstitutionsrelationen in der numerischen Lösung genützt. So eine kombinierte Simulation erlaubt eine genauere Prognose des Benehmens der Tunnelstruktur.

Pyrometallurgy has played a very important role in southern Africa for at least four centuries. It continues to do so, and recent years have seen many exciting developments in pyrometallurgical technology. The wonderfully diverse rich mineral deposits in this area of the world have provided some unique opportunities for industrial processes to be established. The ?Southern African Pyrometallurgy 2006? conference was set up to showcase southern African pyrometallurgical operations, and to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas between people working at various types of smelters. Papers have been obtained from a wide variety of pyrometallurgical plants in southern Africa. These descriptions of plant operations (as well as some history, and highlights of current work) will provide useful reference information for some time to come. Contributions are also included from universities, research organizations, and engineering companies, so that the full spectrum of pyrometallurgical activities can be covered. The plant descriptions will be published on a website, where they can be updated as and when required, with the eventual goal of having a description of every smelter in the region. The conference venue was selected to be the 'Cradle of Humankind' world heritage area, about 40 km from Johannesburg. Not only does this keep the conference within easy reach of the city and yet far enough out into the countryside to allow people to focus on the conference, it is also within easy reach of many pyrometallurgical plants. There is a particular significance to the choice of location, in that the Swartkrans area close to the Sterkfontein Caves is the site of the earliest evidence of the deliberate controlled use of fire by human beings (about 1.3 million years ago), and this is obviously a necessary precursor to pyrometallurgy. The area also lends itself to a very wide range of outdoor, social, and cultural activities to supplement the technical content of the programme. It is hoped that activities such as a hot air balloon safari and visits to the world-renowned Sterkfontein Caves and Wonder Cave will help to make the conference a memorable one for those able to attend. I trust that the ongoing value of the papers and presentations will make all the hard work of the many contributors most worthwhile.

In the context of the construction of an Underground Research Laboratory devoted to the feasibility studies of radioactive waste deposits, it appears of the utmost importance to study the long-term behaviour of rock, over a long time period. In this paper, some results of tests performed on the argillite from the Meuse-Haute-Marne site test in Eastern France are presented. Then a numerical simulation of one of this test using the viscoplastic damaging constitutive law proposed by Lemaitre is presented. Finally, this law is used to simulate numerically the behaviour of the rock at the wall of a circular tunnel in order to determine the extension and the change along the time of the Excavated Damaged Zone (EDZ). Advantages and limitations of the model are discussed. Dans le cadre de la réalisation d’un laboratoire de recherche souterrain conçu pour étudier la faisabilité d’installations de stockage de déchets radioactifs, il apparaît fondamental de caractériser non seulement le comportement viscoplastique à très long terme des matériaux mais aussi les phénomènes d’endommagement consécutif à la redistribution de contraintes provoquées par l’excavation des cavités. On présente ici les résultats d’essais réalisés sur les argilites du site de Meuse/Haute-Marne et destinés à caractériser leur comportement visco-endommageable. Il est ensuite procédé à une application de la loi viscoplastique endommageable de Lemaitre pour simuler l'un de ces tests. Les apports et les limites d'un tel modèle sont mis en évidence par des simulations numériques du comportement de la roche au pourtour d'une galerie circulaire permettant de suivre l’évolution au cours du temps de la zone endommagée (EDZ) à la paroi . Im Rahmen des Baus eines unterirdischen Forschungslabors für die Untersuchung der Machbarkeit von Deponien für radioaktive Abfälle erweist es sich als äußerst wichtig, das langfristige Verhalten von Gestein über einen langen Zeitraum zu untersuchen. Im vorliegenden Artikel werden einige Ergebnisse von Untersuchungen vorgestellt, die mit Tonschiefer aus der Meuse-Haute-Marne in Frankreich durchgeführt wurden. Anschließend wird eine numerische Simulation der Untersuchungen unter Verwendung des von Lemaitre vorgeschlagenen viskoplastischen Verformungsgesetzes vorgestellt. Schließlich wird dieses Gesetz auf die numerische Simulation eines Kreistunnels angewandt, um die Ausdehnung und die zeitliche Entwicklung der Auflockerungszone (EDZ) zu bestimmen. Es werden die Vorteile und Grenzen des Modells diskutiert.

The two components of pillar design formula being used in South Africa are pillar strength and pillar load. While considerable effort has been directed to the determination of pillar strength, the other half of the safety factor equation, the load, has not received the same amount of attention. The load acting on pillars has always been calculated using the Tributary Area Theory (TAT). This paper summarises the recent studies on coal pillar loading using various numerical models. It concludes that although there are meaningful differences under certain circumstances, there is still a compelling argument to use the TAT in coal pillar design. Les deux parties composantes de la formule de conception de pilier généralement utilisée en Afrique du Sud sont la résistance de pilier et la charge de pilier. Tandis que des efforts considérables on été dirigés vers la détermination de la résistance de pilier, l’autre moitié du facteur de sécurité n’a pas reçu la même attention. La charge agissant sur les piliers a toujours été calculée avec la Théorie d’Aire Tributaire (TAT). L’étude présente résume les études récentes sur la charge de pilier de charbon utilisant des modèles numériques variés. La conclusion est que bien qu’il y ait des différences significatives selon les circonstances, il y a toujours un argument puissant pour utiliser le TAT dans la conception de pilier de charbon. Die in Südafrika für die Auslegung von Pfeilern verwendeten zwei Formelkomponenten sind Pfeilerstärke und Pfeilerbelastung. Während beträchtlicher Aufwand zur Bestimmung der Pfeilerstärke gemacht wurde, wurde der anderen Hälfte der Sicherheitsfaktorsgleichung nicht die gleiche Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet. Die auf die Pfeiler wirkende Last wurde immer unter Verwendung der Tributary Area Theory (TAT) berechnet. Diese Arbeit fast neuere Studien betreffend der Belastung von Kohlepfeilern unter Verwendung verschiedener numerischer Modelle zusammen. Die Schlussfolderung ist, daß obwohl unter bestimmten Vorraussetzungen bedeutende Unterschiede existieren, nach wie vor ein bezwingendes Argument besteht TAT in der Kohlepfeilerauslegung zu verwenden.

A range of supported gold catalysts was prepared by ion exchange, varying many of the preparation variables, including concentration in the precursor solution, washing procedure, as well as drying and calcination procedures. These catalysts have been characterized extensively. TEM images show essentially the same crystallite size distributions, between 2?5 nm, for almost all catalysts, the only exception being catalysts not washed in ammonia, which did not show any small crystallites. Additional characterization with SEM yielded an interesting discovery. Catalysts that appear identical on the TEM also contain some large crystallites in the range of 50?500 nm. Differences in dispersion due to the drying procedure not seen on the TEM can now be observed. Oxygen chemisorption is being investigated as an additional method to characterize gold based catalysts to complement the typically used electron microscope techniques.

More than 30 percent of the global demand for zircon (ZrSi04) is supplied by South Africa. A significant amount of the zircon is exported, and beneficiated products are then imported for industrial applications locally. Beneficiating the zircon locally could have a positive impact on the local market, since zircon is only one of many such cases. Ammonium acid fluoride serves as an alternative anhydrous fluorinating agent for zircon in the synthesis of several metal fluorides1,2. It provides an effective dry fluorinating method and is easier to handle than hydrogen fluoride or fluorine gas. Zircon exposed to extreme plasma temperatures dissociates and becomes more reactive. The reaction of the plasma-dissociated zircon (Zr02.SiO2) with the ammonium acid fluoride (NH4F.XHF, where x= 1 to 5) forms two main intermediate compounds (NH4)3ZrFr(s) and (NH4) 2SiF6(s), the latter decomposing to form volatile products at relatively low temperatures, providing easy separation of the silicon and zirconium compounds. The ammonium zirconate compound decomposes to form zirconium tetrafluoride (ZrF4), which can be further manufactured into zirconium metal, to name but one product. Data on the kinetics of the reaction of ammonium acid fluoride with zircon and plasma-dissociated zircon, combined with the thermo¬dynamic parameters of the reaction, is essential for the development of an industrial process for the production of a precursor for the manufacturing of zirconium metal, namely anhydrous ZrF4. Both the reaction kinetics and reaction parameters will be included in this study, as well as some proof that the reaction proceeds to ZrF4 on a small batch scale. If the exact reaction parameters can be pinned down, a wide spectrum of anhydrous metal fluorides can be synthesized through this fluorination route.

In light of the apparent productivity benefits provided by mechanised stoping, Impala Platinum Limited commissioned a study to investigate its possible implementation for mining reserves located 1200 – 1700 m below surface. This paper records the methodology employed for designing a support system for such mechanised mining, as well as initial conclusions of the work done. Preliminary results show the concept to be technically feasible; work was however stopped due to financial non-viability. En considération des bénéfices de production apparents que donne l’exploitation par gradins mécanisée, Impala Platinum Limited a commissionné une étude visant à examiner sa mise en œuvre possible pour des réserves minières situées à 1200 – 1700 m sous la surface. L’étude présente rapporte la méthodologie employée pour créer un système de support pour ce genre d’exploitation mécanisée, ainsi que les conclusions initiales de ce projet. Les résultats préliminaires montrent que le concept est techniquement faisable ; cependant le travail fut arrêté à cause de difficultés de rentabilité. Im Licht des offensichtlichen Produktivitätsnutzens auf Grund mechanisierten Stossbaus, kommissionierte Impala Platinum Limited eine Studie, die dessen mögliche Implementierung für den Abbau von Reserven 1200 - 1700 m unterhalb der Oberfläche untersuchen soll. Dieses Elaborat dokumentiert sowohl die Methode die für das Design eines Unterstützungssystems für eine derartige mechanisierte Abbauweise angewendet wird als auch die anfänglichen Konklusionen der geleisteten Arbeit. Anfängliche Resultate zeigen daß das Konzept technisch durchführbar ist; die Arbeit wurde jedoch wegen der finanziellen Nichtrealisierarkeit gestoppt.

ABSTRACT: Underground hydrocarbons storage is a very specific domain for the designer. He is usually free to adjust the section, shape and layout to cope with the geological and geotechnical conditions. This paper presents a panorama of the geotechnical design of mined underground storage caverns, then lists a number of uncommon features encountered in a storage excavated in Sydney, Australia, the Elgas LPG project that had to face major non-isotropic conditions with numerous local variations, impacting on the achievement of the design profiles. Changes in geotechnical design methodology and practice are examined through this project, now in operation, which will have lasted altogether almost ten years. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die untertaegige Speicherung von Kohlenwasserstoffen unterliegt in der Planung sehr spezifischen Bedingungen. Der planende Ingenieur hat bei der Dimensionierung und Formgebung der Speicherhohlraeume gewisse Freiheiten, muss jedoch vorgefundene geologische und geotechnische Bedingungen beruecksichtigen. Der vorliegende Beitrag gibt zunaechst einen allgemeinen Ueberblick ueber die geotechnische Planung von bergmaennisch aufgefahrenen Speicherhhohlraeumen. Darueber hinaus werden Besonderheiten betrachtet, mit denen das Elgas LPG-Speicherprojekt in einer bergmaennisch aufgefahrenen Kaverne in Sydney, Australien konfrontiert war. Hierbei ging es um die Beruecksichtigung anisotroper Bedingungen mit zusaetzlichen Heterogenitaeten im Gestein und den daraus erwachsenden Schwierigkeiten, die geplante Hohlraumform zu verwirklichen. Ueber einen Zeitraum von fast 10 Jahren, in denen das jetzt in Betrieb befindliche Projekt unterschiedliche Betriebsphasen durchlaufen hat, wurden verschiedene geotechnische Entwurfsverfahren auf ihre Anwendbarkeit geprueft. RESUME : Le stockage souterrain d’hydrocarbures est un domaine très spécifique pour le concepteur, car celui-ci dispose d'une large liberté pour adapter les sections, les formes et les implantations aux conditions géologiques et géotechniques de l’environnement choisi. Après un panorama de la conception géotechnique des stockages souterrains d’hydrocarbures par la méthode dite des cavités minées, l’accent sera mis sur un certain nombre de particularités rencontrées lors du projet de stockage de GPL de Elgas à Sydney en Australie, creusé dans de très fortes conditions d’anisotropie du massif rocheux, avec de nombreuses variations locales et toutes les implications que cela peut avoir sur le maintien des formes. L’évolution des approches méthodologiques géotechniques durant la dizaine d'années de développement de ce projet depuis les premières études jusqu'à l'exploitation actuelle est également présentée. Wellbore stability is a major concern for drilling in naturally fractured formations. The infiltration of drilling mud into the fractures is a factor, which may compromise wellbore integrity due to the loss of strength experienced by the fractures. The reduction in the fracture frictional and cohesive properties is attributed to weakening of the infill materials and lubrication of fracture asperities by the mud filtrate. One way to investigate the influence of mud infiltration on wellbore stability in fractured formations is to use a numerical modeling approach. A requirement for the numerical model is the ability to predict the region of mud infiltration. This paper describes a numerical technique to model the extent of mud infiltration for application in coupled fluid-mechanical simulations in densely fractured rock masses using the computer code, UDEC. Several factors are considered including fracture pattern, in-situ stresses, reduction in joint frictional angle and cohesion, viscosity of the mud filtrate and fracture plugging. Results of numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the technique and show the influence of these factors on the extent of mud infiltration. Un des problèmes importants posés par le forage en milieu fissuré saturé, est celui du maintient de la stabilité du puit. L’infiltration de boue de forage dans le massif peut avoir pour effet de réduire les propriétés frictionnelles et cohésives des fractures et de compromettre ainsi la stabilité du puit de forage. Le radoucissement des propriétés des fractures est attribué à la dégradation du materiau de remplissage et au pouvoir lubrifiant des boues. L’analyse numérique offre un moyen d’investiguer l’influence jouée par l’infiltration de boue sur la stabilité du puit. Un des critères de sélection du modèle numérique sera son pouvoir de prédiction du domaine d’infiltration de boue. Cet article décrit une technique numérique permettant de modéliser l’infiltration de boue de forage dans le cadre de simulations hydro-mécaniques, en milieu à haute densité de fractures, effectuées avec le logiciel de calcul UDEC. Parmis les facteurs tenus en compte, on trouvera la nature du réseau de fractures, les contraintes in-situ, le radoucissement en friction et cohésion des joints, la viscosité de la boue et le bourrage des fractures. Des résultats de simulations sont présentés pour illustrer la technique et montrer l’influence de ces facteurs sur la taille du domaine d’infiltration de boue. Bohrlochstabilität ist ein wichtiger Aspekt für das Bohren in geklüfteten Gebirgsformationen. Das Eindringen der Bohrlochstützflüssigkeit in die Klüfte kann die Bohrlochintegrität wegen des Verlustes der Festigkeit des Kluftsystems gefährden. Die Reduktion der Reibung und kohäsiven Eigenschaften ist der Schwächung der Kluftfüllung und der Schmierwirkung der eingerungenen Stützflüssigkeit in Bezug auf die Kluft-Asperities geschuldet. Numerische Berechnungen sind ein Weg zur Untersuchung des Einflusses der Infiltration der Bohrlochstützflüssigkeit auf die Bohrlochstabilität in geklüfteten Gebirgsformationen. Eine Voraussetzung für numerische Modelle ist die Fähigkeit den Bereich der Infiltration der Stützflüssigkeit zu prognostizieren. Diese Publikation beschreibt ein numerisches Verfahren, um die Reichweite der Infiltration von Stützflüssigkeiten mittels fluid-mechanisch gekoppelter Simulationen im engständig geklüfteten Gebirge mit dem Programm UDEC zu modellieren. Verschiedene Faktoren, wie Kluftmuster, Gebirgsspannungszustand, Reduktion von Kluftreibungswinkel- und kohäsion, Viskosität der Stützflüssigkeit und Rissabdichtung wurden untersucht. Some of the more recent developments in Paint Technology are solvent free materials. These coatings have mainly been formulated to overcome the negative attributes of solvent-based coatings, i.e. environmental, safety and health risks, potential for solvent entrapment and osmotic blistering, as well as the formation of micro-pores during the curing process. Two solvent free liquid epoxy coatings have been used extensively on power generation plant. However, very little is known regarding their long-term performance under different exposure conditions, as well as whether these coatings actually perform better than their solvent-borne counterparts. In addition, solvent free materials are generally used where outage periods are restricted and coatings need to be applied within a very short period. Though these materials have reportedly much shorter curing times than other conventional solvent-borne coatings, little is known regarding their limits with respect to maximum film thicknesses and being put into service while still being wet/partially uncured. The latter has become common practice at many power stations in the past two years or so. In addition, the application and curing methods of solvent free materials are different to that of solvent-borne materials, and may require equipment and application process changes. This paper covers the application and performance properties of solvent free coatings in comparison to solvent-borne materials primarily intended for immersion service. Numerous coatings were evaluated under immersed static and cyclic hydrostatic pressures. Other tests included short curing / early immersion tests, dry-to-touch and dry-through curing times, adhesion tests, surface tolerance tests, etc. The results show that the solvent free materials have clear benefits with respect to safety, health, environmental and long-term performance, but will be more difficult to apply compared to solvent-borne materials.

Anglo Platinum?s Waterval smelting complex based in South Africa operates the Anglo Converting Process (ACP) that produces SO2 offgas. This SO2 offgas is treated in a double-contact, double-absorption acid plant allowing for conversion efficiencies higher than 99.90 %. The catalytic converter used in the acid plant to convert the SO2 to SO3 is a 4-bed reactor loaded with a combination of cesium-promoted and conventional vanadium pentoxide catalysts. In June 2008 there was a shutdown, in which one of the main activities was to screen the catalyst. Before this shutdown, the operator would control the converter pass temperatures manually, via the SCADA, especially during plant start-ups after which some of the automatic temperature controllers were used. After the shutdown, the control philosophy was revisited and all temperature controllers were put on auto mode during plant start up. Furthermore the set points of the pass inlet temperatures were reduced to maximize conversion in the first two passes. The result has been a reduction of SO2 emissions, from a daily average of 50 ? 70 ppm to as low as 20 ppm for similar sulphur dioxide and oxygen concentrations. Further work has been done to maintain high bed temperatures in the third and fourth passes at low SO2 strengths by splitting the gas stream between pass 1 and 2 thus increasing the SO2 content in the gas to pass 2. This increases the temperature of the gas exiting the second pass, which results in higher temperatures in passes 3 and 4. Comparison of the converter performance prior to and after the changes is made. The benefits of partially bypassing the first pass to increase the SO2 content in the gas to the second pass are shown. Conclusions and scope for further work have been drawn from the comparisons.

The ferrite-pearlite microstructure is the most popular microstructure for alloys used in structural applications, including railway wagon wheels. These alloys have been designed through alloying and thermo-mechanical processing to have a refined microstructure. Ferrite-pearlite alloys are low cost, weldable, have good fabricability, and are reliable under extreme conditions. Given these performance attributes, it seems unlikely then that their dominant position as structural steels would ever be challenged by alternative microstructures. One major achievement in the development of ferrite-pearlite steels has been in the refinement of their interlamellar spacing to very fine distances of the order of < 0.3 um. A refined microstructure increases the hardness of the alloy, thus increasing its life under wear conditions. The interlamellar spacing in pearlitic steels has, however, been refined almost to its theoretical limit. The increasing demand for speed and increased axle loading on railway wagons requires the use of stronger, tougher, and more durable materials. This has opened the window for the development of novel bainitic steels. Bainitic alloys have a higher level of microstructural refinement than pearlitic ones. They have shown to have good wear resistance and rolling-contact fatigue resistance, and high toughness. This paper will discuss the progress to date on the development of bainitic railway wheel alloys. Four alloy chemistries have been chosen for possible further development.

In view of decreasing head grades, the relatively high gold price, and recent developments in metal evaluation, an exercise was initiated to determine the extent of gold concentration, the mode of occurrence, and the areas of concentration within the run-of-mine milling circuits of Randfontein Estates Gold Mining Company (Witwatersrand) Limited. The total gold content of three of the thirteen run-of-mine mils in the Group was measured as a typical lock-up of approximately 200 kg per mil. The majority of this gold was concentrated either behind the grid-type body liners or within the pockets of the body liners. This paper is an account of the experimental procedure and the results obtained, and highlights possible means of limiting gold lock-up in future.

It is often asked whether this is atributed to the high grade of the ores encountered in this country, or whether such factors as fiscal and Infrastructural incentives create an economic climate that has en bled the mining industry to successfully extract and market minerals at a profit. This paper views South Africa&apos;s mineral resources in a regional and global context In an attempt to place the country&apos;s geological wealth in perspective. ABSTRACT: The significant effect of fracture surface morphology on the mechanical behaviour of rock masses is well known and has been studied by many people. For linear profiles taken from fracture surfaces, short- and long-period variation has traditionally been described using the descriptors ‘roughness’ and ‘waviness’, with Fourier series analysis being perhaps the most commonly used technique to distinguish between the two attributes. However, the mathematical procedure is involved and the assumptions that have to be made may not be appropriate for rock fracture surfaces. In this paper, an alternative method is presented that enables us to distinguish between roughness and waviness of a linear profile by performing only one straightforward analysis. In our technique, surface morphology is studied in terms of the distribution of unit normal vectors to the profile. The statistical analysis of the distribution is performed using Riemannian, rather than the customary Euclidean, geometry, and from this the 1D Riemannian dispersion parameter (DR1) is obtained, which quantifies the geometry of the profile. The method is applied at different scales to both synthetic sinusoidal profiles and real rock profiles. The results show how periodic behaviour of the profile is revealed at scales where DR1 is substantially equal to zero. RESUME: L’influence significative de la morphologie des épontes sur le comportement mécanique des massifs rocheux est bien connue et a fait l’objet de nombreuses études. Pour les profils lineraires, les variations de courtes et longues périodes sont traditionnellement décrites par les indicateurs “rugosité” et “ondulation” qui sont le plus couramment distingués à l’aide d’une analyse en series de Fourrier. Cependant, la méthode de calcul utilisée et les hypothèses faites ne sont pas appropriées dans le cas des épontes rocheuses. Cet article présente une méthode alternative qui permet de distinguer la rugosité de l’ondulation d’un profil en réalisant une seule analyse directe. Avec notre technique, la morphologie de l’éponte est étudiée comme une distribution spatiale de vecteurs normaux au profil. L’analyse de cette distribution est réalisée à l’aide de la géométrie Riemannienne plutôt que la géométrie classique Euclidienne et permet d’identifier la dispersion Riemanienne en 1D (DR1) qui quantifie la géométrie du profil. Cette méthode est appliquée à différentes échelles sur des profils artificiels sinusoïdaux et des épontes naturelles. Les résultats montrent que le comportement périodique du profil est révélé à des échelles où DR1 est essentiellement égal à zéro. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der signifikante Effekt von Bruchoberflaechen Morphologien auf das mechanische Verhalten von Gesteinsmassen ist gut bekannt und von vielen Bearbeitern untersucht worden. Traditionel lineare Profile von Bruchflaechen sind mit kurz und lang periodischen Variationen, die auch als “Rauhigkeit” und “Welligkeit” bezeichnet worden sind, beschrieben worden. Hierbei ist wohl die Fourier Serien Analyse das wichtigste Hilfsmittel zur Unterscheidung der beiden Attribute gewesen. Hierfuer wird jedoch ein mathematisches Prozedere verlangt und Vorraussetzungen gemacht, die vielleicht nicht fuer Gesteinsbruchflaechen zutreffend sind. In dieser Publikation wird eine andere Methode vorgestellt, die uns mit Hilfe nur einer einfachen Analyse erlaubt zwischen “Rauigkeit” und “Welligkeit” bei einem linearen Profil zu unterscheiden. In unserer Methode wird die Gesteinsoberflaeche unter zu Hilfenahme der Verteilung von Einheitsnormalvektoren beschrieben. Die statistische Analyse der raeumlichenVerteilung dieser Vektoren wird mit Hilfe der Riemannschen, anstatt der ueblicherweise benutzten Euklidischen, Geometrie durchgefuehrt. Von ihr wird der Riemannsche Dispersions Parameter (DR1) abgeleitet, der die Geometrie des Profils quantifiziert. Diese Methode ist bei verschiedenen Masstaeben sowohl auf rein harmonische (sinusoidale), syntetische Profile als auch auf Gesteinsprofile angewendet worden. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass bei Masstaeben bei denen DR1 nahe Null ist periodische Characteristika der Profile hervortreten.

Lonmin, earlier than any other primary platinum producer, had to deal with the concentrating and smelting of UG2-rich ores and concentrates respectively. Smelting was performed at a fairly modest scale compared to the company&apos;s industry peers in the platinum group metals (PGMs) industry, and was focused on smelting concentrates obtained through low mass pulls while still maintaining high recoveries at its concentrators. Lonmin gradually smelted larger quantities of UG2 concentrates. Initially two 2.3 MW Infurnco furnaces were commissioned in 1982, followed by three 5 MW circular 3-electrode Pyromet furnaces in 1991. Deep electrode immersions and moderately high hearth power densities were used in all the designs. Lonmin decided to continue with circular furnace technology when it planned its new high-intensity No. 1 Furnace. Neither Lonmin nor the technology supplier and EPCM company foresaw the challenges that scale-up would bring when applied to the smelting of UG2-rich concentrate blends. Superimposed on the high chromite content, was the low base-metal loading, mineralogical difficulties, and fine particle size that resulted from milling of all concentrates (especially UG2 and recycle materials within the smelter). Through a process of fundamental diagnoses of furnace run-outs and wear patterns observed during repairs, the main challenges operating this high-intensity furnace were identified as sulphur vapour corrosion of the copper coolers, uneven and unpredicted movements of refractory bricks with associated copper cooler lift and matte tapblock movement, the formation of three-phase &apos;mushy&apos; zones, high refractory and taphole wear rates, uncertainty in matte level and associated insufficient matte buffer height, and high furnace operating temperatures. These factors seldom worked in isolation and will be explored in more detail in the paper. The variability in furnace feed characteristics led Lonmin to redesign Furnace No. 1, to invest in backup furnace capacity, and to invest in improved monitoring and control. These improvements consisted of online and high-frequency off-line monitoring of feed chemistry and mineralogy, online pressure monitoring of water-cooled circuits, an alternative matte liquid level measurement in the furnace, and electrode immersion estimation. Improvements were also made at the converters by installing and utilizing optical spectral analysis of the converter flame to characterize converter behaviour and achieve the desired iron end-point for white matte. This paper also briefly discusses the current and future expansion plans, as well as ancillary operations at the smelter such as flue-gas handling and materials handling.
