Experiments were made with a batch reactor to determine the effect of gas pressures, temperature, and gamma radiation intensity on the reaction CO + Ch ? COC12. The equation, [dp = 0.0110 (1 - 0.01t) (PCOI)1/2 PC12] where [dP] is the change of pressure of phosgene with time (atm/hr), t is the temperature (°C), PCO and PC12 are the reactant pressures (atm), and I is the radiation intensity (r/hr), was found to best fit the data. Oxygen and a large ratio of reactor surface to volume retarded the reaction, but inert gases had no effect. A low-temperature reactor system is proposed to take advantage of the conditions which give a high reaction rate with gamma radiation and a simple scheme of product purification.

A new post-disaster signalling system for the Bureau o Mines, using through-the-earth EM propagation, was successfully field-tested in the Lake Lynn test mine. Successful detection at an estimated input SNR of -30dB was accomplished using a coherent integration time of 4.46 minutes. The transmitted waveform consisted of a repeating pseudonoise maximal length sequence phase modulating a 1950Hz carrier. The receiver used a sliding-window matched filter, optimal for signal known exactly except for phase and starting time, implemented via a special purpose processor. Parallel processing permits adaptive signalling, where the detection (integration) time is determined by the actual input SNR encountered. This field test demonstrates a trapped miner detection system that is about 36dB more sensitive than a current pulsed system. This increased sensitivity permits some desired combination of increased range, shorter detection time, and reduced transmitter power or antenna-size. The combination of pulse-compression-type-signal, coherent integration, parallel-processing, and output peak-detection algorithms permit implemention of an ultra-reliable detection system. The same combination is compatible with digital Pulse Position Modulation and Emitter position location strategies.

We present an electromagnetic method taken from the well known radiogoniometer that allows us to locate at the surface of the ground the vertical axis of a magnetic antenna transmitter buried at a depth h in the earth. The method and the equipment achieved are called R. E. P. E. (Relevé Electromagnétique de Points Enterrés). They are daily used to accurately survey old quarries by using triangulation instruments at the surface of the earth rather than in galeries where the setting difficulties considerably reduce their accuracy and increase the work length. The results of several surveys allow us to give the optimum working conditions of the instruments and show that, when the transmitter is at a 20 meters depth, its position is known at the surface with an error lower than 1 centimeter. The power transmitter is of about 8 watts and we can find its location with an error smaller than 1 meter when buried at a depth of about 100 meters. This equipment may be successfully used for location of subsurface miners. The space surrounding the transmitter must then be free from ferromagnetic bodies.

THE THREE words, research, mechanization, and automation are keynote words for mining technology during 1962. Basically interrelated, they not only express the major technologic developments in mining but are the signposts pointing out the road ahead. The process represented by each of these words is evolutionary rather than revolutionary, but developments during the past year indicate a climactical stage has been reached in the process of evolution. Mining research has progressed beyond the stage of academic discussion and is a programed activity within the Federal Government,3 the mining colleges,4 and many of the large mining companies.5 Research was a major agenda item at various national and international mining meetings in 1962. A list of these meetings would include such diverse locales as the Workshop and Symposium on Computers and Computer Applications in Mining and Exploration at the University of Arizona in March; and the 5th Rock Mechanics Symposium at the University of Minnesota, in May; the Rock Mechanics Symposium at McGill University, Montreal, Canada, in September; and the Colloquium XIII, International Society for Rock Mechanics, at Salzburg, Austria, in November.

Decrease dust concentra¬tions of longwall face workers by keeping them up¬wind of the headgate stage loader and crusher. Approach Direct the face airflow from tailgate-to-headgate, the direction of coal transport. How It Works Ventilation is the primary method of dust control on longwall faces, and the most effective ventilation control is to put workers upwind of dust sources. Recent ad¬vances in longwall dust sampling by the Bureau have shown that on some faces, the headgate crusher and transfer points are signifi¬cant sources of dust -some¬times making up more than half of the total dust to which the face workers are exposed. Also, when the air is coursed from head-to-tail, the relative velocity between the air and moving coal on the face conveyor can cause dust entrainment from the conveyor, particularly if the coal is dry. On the faces where these dust sources are a signifi¬cant problem, they may be eliminated by coursing the air from tailgate-to-headgate, provided that the mine roof is stable enough to permit the necessary intake of the tailgate along with an aux¬iliary intake at the headgate.

Determine what diameter piping is necessary to obtain sufficient water flow to spray nozzles used for dust suppression. Approach A simplified, diagrammatic method of calculating the flow of water through a proposed system consisting of a supply line and two banks of spray nuzzles is outlined. How It Works The pressure versus flowrate of the supply at the tapping point must be known or measured. The supply curve of typical city water at a 1 ¼ -inch pipe outlet is shown by the lowest curve in Figure 1. A supply curve for a typical pump fed from an open sump is shown by the middle curve. The combination of these, the supply curve of a pump fed by the city water supply is shown by adding the lower two curves to get the upper curve. A pump supply curve showing flowrate versus pressure is usually supplied by the manufacturer. The water supply line flow curve can be determined by measuring the time required to fill a 55 gallon barrel at various valve settings to determine flow, and by measuring corresponding pressures at the valve with a gauge.

Validate the premise that there is measurable seismic activity associated with abandoned mint lands and that this activity can be used to determine stability of the abandoned mine openings, failure cycle of these openings, and susceptibility of the area to surface subsidence. Approach The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted field investigations at two geologically contrasting sites, Colorado Springs, CO, and the Allegheny Portage Railroad Historical Site near Cresson, PA, to demonstrate that developing monitoring technology can be applied to any site. An array of seven geophones (velocity-measuring sensors) were strategically located to encompass an area at each site where failure in the underground mine openings could be expected, based on historical, geological, and engineering information. How It Works Bureau research has effectively demonstrated that stress changes within a rock mass can stimulate the development of cracks and fractures, resulting in the release of strain energy that generates seismic waves. These seismic waves, traveling outward from their source, can be detected, and the point of origin can be located in three-dimensional space. Furthermore, these seismic signals contain information that defines the source mechanism and the conditions between the source and the receiving sensor.

Predict the spontaneous combustion potential of a coal, using an expert system computer program. Background Approximately 15% of underground coal mint fires in the United States are attributed to spontaneous combustion. These spontaneous combustion fires frequently occur in worked-out or abandoned areas of a coal mine, This makes the control and extinguishment of the fire difficult and often requires large sections of the mine or even the entire mine to be scaled for long periods of time. A prior knowledge of the self-heating potential of the coal can be useful in preventing spontaneous combustion fires through the use of aggressive monitoring and control measures at existing coal mining operations, and in the planning oh new mines. Many factors can affect the spontaneous combustion process in a mine, including the self-heating potential of the coal, ventilation, geologic factors, and mining conditions and practices. Various test methods have been used to evaluate the relative self-healing potential of coals, including crossing point temperature and adiabatic heating methods, and oxygen adsorption techniques. However, these tests arc usually time-consuming and difficult to conduct, limiting their use to laboratories.

Develop a simple and practical technique to measure in situ rock mass properties for realistic design and stability evaluation of underground structures. Background The Bureau of Mines has developed basic principles and techniques to determine in situ rock mass properties including Poisson's ratio, deformation modulus, and yield and failure strengths. An instrumentation package consisting of three pressure cells is installed in a single drill hole. Cell pressure response data are acquired and used to calculate and determine the rock mass properties. How It Works A test hole of BX size (approximately 5.7 cm) or larger is drilled to the approximate depth of the measuring point. The last portion of the test hole is drilled with precision bits to EX size (approximately 3.8 cm). The instrumentation package, which consists of one 3.8-cm-diameter cylindrical pressure cell (CPC) and two 5.7-cm-diameter cement-capsulated, flat borehole pressure cells (BPC's), is then installed. A complete history of cell response to changing strata loads is acquired on a continuous basis with a chart-type hydraulic pressure recorder. From these cell pressure data, Poisson's ratios, deformation moduli, and yield and failure strengths are calculated and determined.

Background Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas that can cause illness and death by asphyxiation. Although the toxicity of CO is understood, CO exposure can occur from unrecognized sources. On April 2, 2000, a couple and their newborn infant were poisoned by CO migrating through the ground from blasting at a nearby coal strip mine into their home near Kittanning, Armstrong County, PA. They were treated at the hospital and diagnosed with CO poisoning. The infant had a carboxyhemoglobin level of 31%, the father 28%, and the mother 17%. Carboxyhemoglobin is the compound formed in the blood when CO is breathed. Persons not exposed to CO have carboxyhemoglobin levels of 0.3%-0.7%, and cigarette smokers have levels of up to 9%. Following release from the hospital, the family installed a CO detector in the basement of their home with the help of the local fire department. This Technology News briefly describes this incident to help increase awareness of the problem. It is discussed in more detail by Eltschlager et al. [2001]. Figure 1 shows the coal strip mine believed to have generated the CO. The initial suspect for the source of the CO was the furnace in the house. Only later did it become apparent that blasting at the nearby strip mine might be the culprit. A State investigation concluded that CO had migrated approximately 500ft from the blast, through the ground, and into the home. Figure 2 shows the locations and order of blasts at the mine. Initially, the mine did not plan to blast. Overburden generally consisted of weathered shale that could be dug without blasting. However, the mine decided to blast when hard sandstone that could not be dug out was encountered within 3 ft of the coal top. The blasting was intended to break up the sandstone. Blasting was done using bulk ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) in 6.25-in holes 25-30 ft deep on a 16-ft by 16-ft pattern, with charge weights ranging from 17 to 170 lb. The closest blast to the home was 430 ft on April 17, 2000. The distance from the home to the blast area on the day when CO was first reported (March 31, 2000) was 500 ft. Twenty blasts were detonated at the mine between March 7, 2000, and April 20,2000. The blaster was careful to prevent fly rock since another home was only 150 ft away and a garage was 50 ft away. The quantity of explosive used in the blasts was sufficient to break the sandstone, but was less than would normally be used to blast overburden. The holes were typically one-third explosive and two-thirds stemming, with powder factors averaging 0.43 lb/yd3. Additionally, the muck was not immediately excavated after each blast. The heavy confinement on the explosive acted to prevent the typical release of blasting fumes into the atmosphere. Instances of CO migrating from blasts into homes have occurred before, but generally the distances involved were under 150 ft. It is believed that the blast design contributed to the confinement of CO in the ground, and discontinuities in the ground strata facilitated migration toward the residence. Upon inspection of the blast pitwall, a regular system of joints was observed. These joints are oriented roughly from the blast pit toward the house (figures 3-4).Blast-generated CO appears to have been driven into the joint system, displacing the air. When the joint system was saturated, the next succeeding blast pushed the CO into an uncased well next to the house (a high level of CO has been measured in the well shortly after a blast). From there, the CO entered the French drain system and then the basement of the house. The joints are vertical cracks through rock layers that occur on a regular spacing (figure 3). They are most common near valley slopes and are caused when valley walls converge as the stream cuts down through the rock layers. Often called hill seams, they roughly parallel the valley walls, but can curve and split, creating a pathway for gas movement (figure 5). These fractures are often encountered when underground mining proceeds close to outcrop. The system of fractures at the Kittanning blast pit was well developed and provided a path for transmission of CO both through the sandstone and up and through the overlying shales. Blasting engineers should be able to distinguish naturally occurring fractures from blast fractures and note the frequency, development, and orientation of the hill seams and their proximity to occupied houses. "The most authoritative compilations on the coal resources of the British Isles are given in ""The Coal Resources of the World"" issued by the 12th International Geological Congress, 1913. The reserve, calculated to a depth of 6,000 feet, in seams containing not less than two feet of merchantable coal are as follows: Mining at present is conducted at depths from about 800 to 3500 feet. The shallower coals have largely been exhausted. The present average hoisting depth probably is about 1500 feet.The thickness of individual beds at present mined varies from about 2-1/2 feet up to 40 feet in thickness, the latter thickness being found in North Staffordshire. The coal is rarely found level, but is approximately level in some parts of Yorkshire. Anthracite is mined in limited quantities in Wales, and Wales also produces a very high grade semi-anthracite or smokeless coal, which is fa famous the world round, and is equaled only by the Pocahontas and New River coals in the United States:As concerns the methods of mining, these vary widely according to the pitch of the bed, the thickness of coal, and natural conditions, but the prevailing method is some form of longwall or semi-longwall, by which all the coal is extracted. The other principal method is a so-called pillar and, stall method, by which the coal is mined out, leaving square or rectangular pillars which are extracted on the retreat, making it virtually, a retreating longwall system. This method is applied where the roof is strong, and particularly in the thicker beds, as the longwall method is not so well adapted for mining where the thickness exceeds five or six feet, unless it is what is called a multiple seam, one in which there are partings of rock that provide material for building walls, which the roof in subsiding gradually squeezes down."

The pendant drop interfacial tensiometer is being used to study interfacial phenomena that influence the production of crude oil. A description of the instrument showing the modification of the cell and cell holder is presented. The modified cell and cell holder allow formation of a precise and reproducible drop size, and the image of the drop is easily alined and focused. Interfacial tension measurements and observations of film formation can be conducted at various temperatures with the jacketed cell.

The Bureau of Mines conducted ignition, flammability, and decomposition experiments on gas mixtures containing ethylene to determine its flammability characteristics at elevated pressures and ambient temperatures. Pure ethylene was found to propagate a decomposition reaction at 1,000 psig and ambient temperatures when ignited with 1 gram or more of guncotton in a 2-inch-id bomb. The decomposition products were primarily carbon, methane, and hydrogen.

Municipal solid waste (MSW) contains about 8 pct ferrous metallics which are typically recovered by magnetic separators at municipal resource recovery facilities. At present, only about 182,500 ton/yr of MSW magnetics are being processed for remelting out of the -11 MMton/yr discarded. The Sn in MSW magnetics makes this material difficult to recycle to the steel industry. An electrolytic method using stannous fluoborate-fluoboric acid for removing Sn was evaluated. Optimum concentrations of Sn in the electrolyte and the effects of impurities such as Al, Cu, Fe, and Pb on Sn recovery from the electrolyte were evaluated. Operating parameters were 60 to 65 g/L fluoboric acid and 20 to 30 g/L Sn using stainless steel electrodes at a current density of 60 A/ft2. Tests were run with postconsumer scrap4 and MSW magnetics. Good results were obtained with MSW magnetics, after pretreatment by reshredding, magnetic separation, and air classification. The final Sn content of the MSW magnetics scrap was reduced from 0.18 to 0.017 wt pct. Heat and solvent treatments of MSW magnetics to remove coatings did not significantly improve Sn removal beyond that obtained with material that had only been mechanically pretreated.

This study ranks the factors impacting survival during a coal mine fire. It bas already been established that reducing time delays is the most important factor in saving lives. Consequently every event during afire is measured in terms d its duration, and the effectiveness d any action taken to improve survival is measured in terms d the time it saves. By ranking actions according to time saved these authors found that a comhination d actions was most effective. This combination was: • installing lifelines. • moderately decreasing air leakage and • decreasing the fire growth rate. Changing ventilation leakage alone was much less effective, as was altering the CO (carbon monoxide), sensor alarm threshold. These results confirm an earlier fault-tree study on escape from mine fires. The fault-tree study bad shown that, with the exception d delays, single factor changes have minimal impact. Significant reductions in fire fatalities only take place with multiple factor changes.

Bureau of Mines is made periodically for the purpose of aiding consumers in procuring equipment .374/ The last published list , approved to March 15 , 1935 , appeared as Information Circular 6845 with the same title as this article . The schedules of requirements and tests which the devices must meet in order to obtain approval are published 2/6/1/8/ by the Bureau of tests the devices must Mines and are available to the public . It is pertinent to mention that the preparation of a schedule of requirements for fresh-air supply devices of the types commonly known as positive -pressure respirators , airline respirators , sand- blast helmets , and hoods , has been practically completed and will soon be ready for release to the public .

A combined solvent extract ion-spectrophotometric method for the determination of as little as 1 ppm of copper in tungsten metal or tungstic oxide has been developed and evaluated. Metallic samples are converted to tungstic oxide by treatment with hydrofluoric and nitric acids. The oxide is then dissolved in sodium hydroxide, and the copper is extracted as the colored neocuproine complex. Total elapsed time for the analysis is approximately 1-1/2 days; however, actual working time for a group of six or eight determinations is less than 4 hours. Precision at the 2-ppm level is better than 0.1 ppm.

Wire saws have been used for many years in European travertine, marble, and slate quarries. This method of sawing found very limited use in America until 1927 when it was accepted as standard equipment in elate quarries in Pennsylvania where it has been remarkably successful. Details of its operation in slate have been published in a recent bureau report.3 The very limited extent to which the wire saw has been employed in limestone and marble quarries in the United States and the seeming lack of interest even in experimental work to determine its advantages are difficult to explain in vied of its wide use in cutting similar rocks in Europe and its unquestionable advantages in sewing slate in America. In order to encourage improvement in quarry practice the United States Bureau of Mines has endeavored to obtain information as to the extent to which wire saws are used in Europe together with data on the rate and cost of sawing. The information at hand is by no means complete either in territory covered or in details of operation; it nevertheless brings out certain significant features that may be of interest and advantage to quarrymen in the United States.

THIS CHAPTER reports employment data and injury experience in the metal, nonmetal, quarrying, sand and gravel, and slag (iron blast furnace) industries of the United States in 1959. Each industry is treated separately, and no attempt has been made to combine data to show an overall total for this group of mineral industries. The slag canvass is included for the first time (data on employment and injuries were not collected before 1958), and, like other canvasses included in this chapter, data are voluntary. Employment and injury experience for all mineral industries can be found in volume III. The employment and injury information in this chapter came from reports submitted to the Bureau of Mines before May 31, 1960; therefore, figures are preliminary and subject to revision. Voluntary reports submitted by operators have contributed substantially to safety promotion since 1911, when the Federal Bureau of Mines started collecting employment and injury facts.
