"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYDuring 1946 several high-grade limestone deposits in western Washington were examined by the Bureau of Mines. This report presents the data obtained from investigation of the Sauk Mountain deposits in east-central Skagit County, Washington.The investigation consisted of transit and topcgraphic surveys and sampling. The areas selected for sampling were first cleaned by blasting; channel samples up to 40 pounds were cut where practical. Chip samples averaging 30 pounds were taken where channel samples could not be cut. A total of 21 samples in the Sauk Mountain area were taken and. analysed. The locations of the samples are shown in figures 2 and 4, and the analyses are listed in tables 1 and 2. This investigation is a part of a long-range program of general investigation of mineral resources for future industrial development of the Pacific Northwest. The Sauk Mountain deposits were investigated for the purpose of disclosing now sources of high-purity limestone, which could be mined and shipped at low cost to Seattle and other industrial cities in the Pacific Northwest."

The topography of the Jamestown fluorspar area is rough and ranges from 6,400 to 8,000 feet in altitude. Some fluorspar was mined as early as 1870, but mining really did not begin in earnest until 1940, and up to July 1947 it is estimated that 272,500 tons of fluorite was mined and milled. In 1947 the General Chemical Co. was mining fluorite and milling it in a 200-ton-a-day mill at Valmont, 7 miles east of Boulder, and the Ozark-Mahoning Co. was milling ore in a 100-ton-a-day mill at Jamestown, using ore mined, by H. M. Williamson & Son. These fluorite deposits comprise veins in a granite country rock. The Bureau of Mines drilled eight holes, aggregating 2,579.1 feet, on the Blue Jay vein; four holes, aggregating 1,434 feet, on the Chancellor; and one 350-foot hole on the Nations Treasure. Fluorite of a minable grade and width was found in 10 of the holes drilled. In this report the location and accessibility, physical, features and climate are described and a brief history of the district is given. The deposits and character of the ore and sampling and analyses are described, mine workings are outlined, and work performed by the Bureau of Mines is summarized. Diamond drill logs are shown in appendix I, and 'Sample analyses are tabulated in appendix II.

Nuclear explosive fracturing has been suggested as a method to make hard rock amenable to extraction by a modified block-caving method. To evaluate this possibility, conventional and nuclear blasting practices are discussed, underground mining methods for large deposits and their costs are described, and the cost of fracturing ore with a nuclear explosive and subsequent mining by a modified caving system is estimated and compared with both open-stope and block-caving mining costs. While the direct cost of fracturing the ore in hard rock with a nuclear explosive is less than with conventional explosives, additional costs imposed by the use of nuclear explosives may make their use unattractive for deep mining.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of significant coalbeds in Kanawha County , W. Va . It is one in a series of Federal Bureau of Mines reports planned to determine coals suitable for producing metallurgical coke , either as mined or after beneficiation . Almost 9.4 million tons of coal was produced in Kanawha County , W. Va . , in 1959 , of which about 67 percent was cleaned mechanically in 10 cleaning plants . It has been estimated that more than 5,505 million tons remain in the county . Samples were collected from Pittsburgh , Stockton - Lewiston , Winifrede , Cedar Grove , Peerless , Upper Kittanning , Coalburg , Powellton , Eagle A , No. 2 Gas , and the Lower Kittanning beds . These beds were selected by the Bureau based on current production rates and estimated minable reserves . Float - and - sink tests of the samples collected from Eagle A , Peerless , Cedar Grove , Winifrede , and No. 2 Gas beds show that these coals at one location each are suitable for metallurgical use without washing . Lower Kittanning bed at four locations ; Pittsburgh , Stockton - Lewiston , and No. 2 Gas beds at two locations each ; and Coalburg , Powellton , Winifrede , Peerless , Upper Kittanning , and Cedar Grove beds at one location each can be upgraded to metallurgical quality by mechanical cleaning . Crushing the samples to 3/ 8- inch top size increased yields substantially at 1.30 specific gravity of Pittsburgh ( 17.5 percentage points ) and Upper Kittanning ( 13.0 percentage points ) beds and increased yield for the other beds sampled to a lesser amount . At this specific gravity , finer crushing caused In the 1.58 specific gravity float a general decrease in ash and sulfur . fractions of the other samples tested , most of the yields , and ash and sulfur contents , were lowered slightly by finer crushing .

Elastic-plastic finite-element simulation of cut-and-fill stoping in deep, narrow veins shows substantial quantitative agreement with field measurements of stope closure and fill pressure made at two mines in the Coeur d'Alene mining district of northern Idaho. The simulation procedure, validated by field data, was used in an analytical study of vein-wall closure and sill-pillar stress as influenced by fill modulus, rock modulus, and premining stress. Ratios of closure and pillar stress in the filled stopes to closure and pillar stress in the unfilled stopes are used as prediction indices for fill performance. In general, the support capability of fill increases dramatically as the ratio of fill modulus to rock modulus approaches 1. A significant reduction in closure .from the open stope--up to 75 percent--occurs with a relatively low-quality 10-ksi-modulus fill (rock modulus of 1,000 ksi). However, a higher quality fill is needed to achieve a substantial reduction in pillar stress from that of the open stope. A 100-ksi-modulus fill reduces pillar stress in both the 36-foot and l6-foot pillars (vein width is 10 feet) by about 50 percent relative to the open stope.

Fluidized - bed roasting was investigated as a means of decomposing gypsum and gypsum mixtures to produce a gas rich in sulfur dioxide and a lime or portland cement residue . Ninety- eight percent desulfurization of gypsum in a 10 - inch fluidized- bed reactor took 1.5 hours at an operating temperature between 1,200 ° and 1,225 ° C. A cement- type residue was obtained but had to be refired at 1,450 ° C before mortar prepared from it met the physical specifications for cement .

Several thin film absorber stacks with spectrally selective characteristics were developed by the Bureau of Mines. The stacks consisted of a silicon thick film or a zirconium compound thin film on a reflective thin film of silver. The zirconium absorber films, with the general formula ZrCxOyNz, were prepared by reactively sputtering zirconium or zirconium carbide in argon with small amounts of oxygen, nitrogen, or both, or by oxidizing zirconium films in air. A few similar types of films were prepared from titanium. The short-wave absorptance over the solar spectrum, a(s), and thermal emittance at 600 K, e(600 K), of the solar absorber stacks were calculated from room-temperature reflectance data. The values of a(s) ranged from 0.47 to 0.93, e(600 K) from 0.49 to 0.034, and the ratio a(s)/e(600 K) from 1.7 to 34. The specimen with the best combination of properties, a ZrNx-Ag stack, had a solar absorptance a(s) of 0.85 and a ratio, a(s)/e(600 K), of 24. The effect of film thickness and composition on spectral selectivity was determined. An emissometer for measuring normal total emittance up to 800 K and a method for determining a (s), e(T) (hemispherical), and a(s)/e(T) using simulated solar radiation are described. A calorimetric method for measuring a(s) and e(T) (hemispherical) at elevated temperature is also described. Measurements made on several specimens agreed favorably with calculated values.

The blast -hole method for drilling and breaking ground is not new to the mining industry . For several years it has been used rather extensively in Canada , particularly in the gold mines , where it was first developed and where the major advances in the technique as applied to present - day mining problems have been made . At present , 40 mines in Canada and the United States are using the method in one form or another , and from all indications its use will increase in the future . In two California mines , blast -hole diamond drilling is now used for a part of or for all stoping operations , and in one of these it is used to some extent in development work . At the Mountain Copper Co.'s Hornet mine in Shasta County, about 50 percent of the pyritic sulfide ore produced is mined by the blast - hole method , and the U. S. Vanadium Corp. mines 80 percent of the ore produced at its Pine Creek tungsten mine in Inyo County by this method . At Pine Creek , long -hole drilling and blasting is used for mining pillars also , and in pre - stoping development . The blast -hole diamond - drilling method is not applicable to all types of ore bodies . A third property in California , the El Dorado Limestone Company , El Dorado County, tried the method for several months in 1943 and 1944 , but , owing to certain factors that greatly increased mining cost , the company soon returned to conventional mining methods .

This report presents a detailed study of low temperature, entrained-bed carbonization of an Australian coking coal. The coal studied was high-volatile B bituminous from the Foybrook mine, an open-cut operation in the Liddell seam, New South Wales, Australia. Carbonization was conducted in an 8-inch diameter, continuous vertical reactor at several temperatures from 960° to 1,300° F. It was demonstrated that this bituminous coal can be carbonized within this temperature range to produce tar and a nonagglomerated char, without prior oxidation or char recirculation. Carbonization rates from 138 to 287 lb/hr (as-carbonized basis) were investigated. It was found that the carbonization temperature and the air-to-coal ratio must exceed minimum values to insure continuous operation. At the higher air-to-coal ratios employed, all or most of the carbonization heat was provided by internal combustion with air in the reactor. At the lower air-to-coa1 ratios, part of the heat for carbonization was supplied externally. On the moisture-and ash-free basis, the yield of tar plus light oil ranged from about 26 to 44 gallons per ton, and the char yield ranged from approximately 1,160 to 1,370 pounds per ton. The heat in the gas ranged from about 900 to 3,000 Btu/lb of moisture-and ash-free coal. Carbonization product yields correlated well with air-to-coal ratio and carbonization temperatures. The volatile matter in the char was found to be temperature dependent. At 1,300° F carbonization, the volatile matter in the char was 8.7 percent (dry basis), whereas at 9600 F carbonization, the residual volatile matter was about 16 to 18 percent (dry basis).

As part of its objective to expand the body of mineral information as a basis for new technology, the Bureau of Mines conducted research on the fundamental behavior exhibited by phosphate clay waste in settling ponds. A semiempirical equation used to describe the compaction of ceramic powders in a single-acting die was applied to aqueous phosphatic clay waste and attapulgite slurries. This equation, [*V = a1 e ?k1/P + a2e ? k2/P] was found to describe the compaction of an attapulgite gel and a phosphate slime gel by a moving screen. [*V] is the ratio of the compaction achieved at a given pressure, P, to the compaction achieved at a pres-sure sufficient to remove all space between particles. The constant al represents the fraction of compaction achieved at low pressure by rearrangement of floes to higher packing density, and a2 represents the fraction of compaction achieved at higher pressure resulting from removal of voids within floes. K1 and K2 are constants determined from the experimental data. Both the low-pressure and high-pressure compaction mechanisms were observed in the compaction of the clays. These two compaction mechanisms offer an explanation for the observation that impounded slimes initially dewater rapidly and then dewater at a much slower rate.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by The Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations No. 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the fourth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on Figure 13 in Volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township-is given with the discussion covering that area.

"A pneumoconiosis is best defined as the accumulation of dust in the lungs and the tissue's reaction to iu presence. Thus, silicosis is the name given to the fibrotic disease of the lungs caused by inhalation of dust containing silicon dioxide, primarily in the free crystalline form. Coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP), which was originally thought to be a variant of silicosis, results from inhalation of coal mine dust that usually contains relatively small amounts of free crystalline silica.HISTORYSilicosis is the older and more well known of these mineral pneumoconiosis. In contrast, CWP was not recognized as different from silicosis until the pivotal work of Collis and Gilchrist. 26 They noted that coal trimmers, i.e., special stevedores who leveled coal in the holds of ships at the Cardiff and Swansea docks in Wales, developed identical nodules on the chest radiograph to those of underground miners. The difference was that these men had never worked underground and that the coal was washed before it was loaded into ships; thus, it was unlikely that these men were exposed to silica. Gough54 examined the lungs of coal trimmers who died and found that the histologic appearance of the pulmonary lesions was distinctly different from the whorled nodules seen in silicosis. Gough,"" and subsequently Heppleston,"" then showed that the lung lesions in coal trimmers were similar to those in underground coal miners and different from those of classical silicosis. Nagelschmidt 78 analyzed the mineral content of miners' lungs that became available at autopsy. These studies caused him to propose a scheme in which the relative proportions of silica, other minerals, and/or coal deposited in the lungs determined the type of pulmonary response which develops, i.e., classical silicosis, mixed-dust disease, or CWP."

This paper describing the mining practices at the Teck-Hughes mines at Kirkland Lake, Ontario, is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in various mining districts. HISTORY Prospecting was begun in the neighborhood of Kirkland Lake in 1906, but staking did not take place until 1911. Gold-bearing veins were discovered by surface trenching in 1913 on the mining claims which now make up the Teck-Hughes Gold Mines (Ltd.). A small mill was erected in 1916 after the completion of some underground exploration. A transmission' line was built in 1917 to the camp to provide adequate power for a vigorous underground campaign. Also in 1917 the present management took control operations since 1916 have been continuous,' with a steady increase in production to date.

The possibility of using ultrasonic energy as a tool to improve the electrolytic deposition of copper and zinc from several electrolytes was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines. Sound with frequencies of 20, 26, 38, and 400 kilocycles per second and acoustical intensities of 0.25 to 1.5 watts per square centimeter was employed. Measurements of cell voltage, anode and cathode current efficiencies, and electrode potentials were made at various current densities. Effects of ultrasonics on the quality of the deposit and on anode corrosion also was noted. In the electrolytic recovery of copper from an acid copper sulfate solution at 50° C., adherent, well-consolidated deposits are normally obtained up to a current density of 30 amperes per square foot. As the current density is increased above this value, the deposits normally become progressively more spongy and less adherent. Ultrasonic irradiation resulted in adherent and well-consolidated deposits at current densities up to 300 amperes per square foot. Radiation also produced smaller grain size and preferred orientation of the copper crystals. In addition, radiation caused as much as 3-volt decreases in cell voltages at the higher current densities. These decreases were caused chiefly by depolarization of the anode, although small depolarization effects were also noted at the cathode. Radiation apparently did not greatly affect cathode-current efficiencies, but prevented excessive anode corrosion at the higher current densities and resulted in more uniform corrosion. Ultrasonic radiation at a frequency of 400 kilocycles per second was not as effective as radiation at the lower frequencies. Circulation of the electrolyte at rates up to 5 percent of the cell capacity per minute did not produce results comparable to those effected by ultrasonic radiation. Rapid rotation of the cathode up to 1,800 revolutions per minute gave results approaching those obtained with ultrasonics.

"INTRODUCTION In the course of the investigation of manganese mineral occurrences in continental United States, the Bureau of Mines has collected several lots of ore from properties in the vicinity of Long Valley, Ariz. The ore occurs as irregular and random pockets in a brecciated zone. As only high-grade portions of the deposits obtained by selective mining would be acceptable as commercial-grade manganese ores, an investigation was made to determine amenability of the ores to concentration by ore-dressing methods. Several types of ores, differing in grade and mineral associations, were studied.Ores from the Vaiazza property are of special interest, owing to the successful application of silica flotation for their concentration. Ores from the Shroup and Conner-Hough properties are very similar but differ somewhat in their response to ore-dressing Method's. In all instances, the man¬ganese minerals are psilomelane and pyrolusite, with minor amounts of other manganese oxides. The country rook is a brecciated limestone; the diluent in the high-grade ore pockets is chiefly silica. The low-grade manganese ores are limestone replacements, and the chief gangue material, of course, is limestone."

[In the original Norris and Fay method for determining selenium, selenious acid is reduced by an excess of standard thicsulfate in accordance with the following reaction: H2Se03 + 4Na2S203 + 4HC1 = Na2SeS406 + Na2S406 + 4NaC1 + X20. (1) The excess thiosutfate is then back-titrated with standard iodine solution. The disadvantages of ouch a method are obvious. On an unknown sample, the quantity of thiosutfate required would be difficult to determine; a definite excess is required, but large back titrations would be undesirable. Inasmuch as thiosulfate is decomposed by acid, considerable error may be introduced in this method, the amount depending on the acidity, temperature, concentration of excess thiosulfate, duration of contact between thiosulfate and acid, and other factors, In a critical study of the Norris and Fay method, Coleman and McCrosky3/ show that the method is accurate to less than .1 part per thousand if the excess of this sulfate Is not greater than 5 ml. of 0.1 N solution (in 1.0 ml. of 0.x4 N sulfuric acid) whether the titration is made at 0° or 20°C. A greater excess produced unsatisfactory values at either temperature. Coleman and McCrosky regulated the excess thiosulfate by adding 5-ml. portions of thiosulfate solution followed by the addition of 1 to 3 drops of 2.5 percent potassium iodide in the presence of starch. If a starch-iodine blue color formed locally around the drops of potassium Iodide, the reduction of selenious acid was not complete. On stirring the solution, the local blue color fades and another 5-ml. portion of thiosulfate is added. When addition of potassium iodide fails to produce a local blue color, reduction of selenious acid is complete, and the excess thiosulfate is then back-titrated with standard Iodine solution. The number of equivalents involved in the reduction of selenious acid by either thiosulfate or iodide is the same, and therefore no correction need be made for the potassium iodide. This procedure is much better than the original Norris-Fay titration, but acidity and time would stilt be rather critical factors subject to variation with individual technique. Also, the method still requires the lose of two standard solutions, a rather undesirable factor from the standpoint of routine application.]

This research program was conducted to determine if respirable coal dust emanating from a continuous mining machine can be suppressed more effectively by a high expansion foam than by the water sprays conventionally used. A high expansion foam system was developed and tested on a continuous mining machine under actual operating conditions. The utility of the system was demonstrated. Test results tend to show that foam application is more effective than water sprays in suppressing respirable coal dust. However, because of the extreme variability of the test conditions, scatter in the sampling data, and other factors, not enough data was obtained to form a firm conclusion that foam is more efficient than a water spray in suppressing respirable coal dust. Sufficient statistical data was obtained, however, to indicate that foam is more efficient than water in suppressing total float coal dust.

A revolutionary development in blasting materials has occurred in recent years. Ammonium nitrate, sensitized by the addition of a small percentage of No. (class) 2 diesel fuel or other suitable petroleum product, has been adopted as a low-cost, efficient blasting agent2 in a wide variety of mining, quarrying, and heavy construction operations. Moreover, the ready availability of the component supplies throughout the Nation, together with the ease of formulating them into effective blasting agents, has made it possible for the blaster himself to prepare the mixes at the site of use. Recently, most established explosives manufacturers have begun supplying premixed AN-FO (ammonium nitrate-fuel oil) or a comparable product to various mining operations. However, many individuals and small business establishments are marketing premixed products prepared in facilities that are often poorly constructed and poorly located. Although these blasting agents have partly or wholly displaced explosives such as dynamites in many applications, there are some blasting operations in which the fuel-sensitized ammonium nitrate agents do not appear to be well adapted. As long as the hazards they present are clearly understood and respected, ammonium nitrate-based blasting agents have important safety characteristics when prepared under competent factory control or field-mixed under equivalent close control. This publication attempts to summarize the knowledge of those hazards and to incorporate practical ways to cope with them.

"Magnetite iron deposits on Tolstoi Mountain were examined as part of the investigations by the Bureau of Mines of iron and copper ores on Prince of Wales Island. The Tolstoi Mountain project was a part of a program for investigating mineral deposits in Alaska, under the general supervision of R. S. Sanford, acting branch chief.A preliminary examination was made by S. P. Holt, mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in company with John Reed, L. A. Warner, and W. S. Twenhofel of the Federal Geological Survey, on July 14, l943. Three samples were taken, rough estimates were made, and it was proposed that the area be mapped, topographically and geologically,. Dip-needle work was added to the program, and it was decided that, should results warrant, the deposits would be diamond-drilled.From March 26 to May 28, 1944, the deposits were examined thoroughly by Bureau of Mines personnel under the direction of the author. Thirty-two acres were mapped with contour intervals of 10 feet, grids were established covering the principal outcrops, over 1,500 dip-needle readings were secured, and the magnetite bodies were outlined. Additional information was gathered by trench inch and channel-sampling, 600 linear feet of trench being dug and 32 channel samples being cut. Finally, the mapped area was checked for nonoutcropping deposits by taking dip-needle readings at 10-foot intervals along the traverse lines, creeks, trails, and all outstanding topographical features. This re-connaissance work gave sufficient coverage of the 32 acres to eliminate the possibility of further magnetite bodies of any consequence remaining undiscovered.Acknowledgment is made to Nile Johannsen, assayer, Territorial Department of Mines, Ketchfkan, Alaska, for determination of samples.The deposits are on Prince of Wales Island in Southeastern Alaska near Tolstoi Pay, a deep-water indentation at the northwest and of Kasdan Peninsula. The physical features are shown on figures 1 and 2 and the location of the deposition figure 3. Old workings were found on the west side of Tolstoi Mountain; between elevations of 650 and 1,150 feet, at distances of 3/4 to 1-1/4 miles from the east shore of Tolstoi Bay.Access to the area is over a brushed foot trail built by the Bureau of Mines. Topography would permit construction of either surface or aerial tramways at moderate cost but would make road building expensive. Deep-water navigation, permitting inexpensive water transportation, is possible the year around.Kasaan Peninsula is an area of moderate relief, being considerably less rugged than the mainland to the east. Most of the mountains and ridges are less than 2,500 feet in height and show evidence of having been covered by the ice cap of the Pleistocene age. Rock exposures below elevations of 2,000 feet are limited, as extensive overburden 2 to 20 feet deep covers the greater part of the peninsula."
