The Bureau of Mines investigated the concentration and distribution of precious metals in the various fractions produced from mechanical processing of obsolete military electronic scrap. Whole avionic units, printed circuit cards, and electrical connectors were processed and analyzed. Materials recovered included baghouse lights, wire bundles, mag-netics, and metal concentrates from eddy-current and high-tension sepa-ration. Higher value fractions were processed by a commercial toll refiner for recovery of gold and silver. Lower value fractions were analyzed by the Bureau. Three fractions, the lights, wire bundles, and metallics from high-tension separation, contained most of the precious metals. Depending on the type of scrap feed, these fractions represented 34 to 60 pct of the original sample weight. Collectively, they represented 68 to 97 pct and 75 to 98 pct of the contained gold and silver, respectively.

In many practical combustion systems ignition may occur through contact with hot burned gases . Such a process plays a vital role in flame stabilization on bluff bodies . It is also of importance in the ignition of firedamp by the hot spent gases of explosives used in mines . Also , in the communication of flames through narrow channels , a problem of practical importance in flameproofing electrical equipment , the propagation of the flame is essentially a reignition process in which hot burned gases are the agent of ignition . In the actual ignition problem a great variety of conditions may be visualized . Ignition may occur where pockets of hot gases are surrounded by cold explosive mixtures or where pockets of cold mixture may be surrounded by hot gases . Alternately , a flowing stream of combustible mixture may be initially in contact with another stream of hot combustion products , or a jet of hot gases may flow into a cold quiescent mixture ; the jet may be laminar or turbulent , continuous or discontinuous . The hot gas may also consist of the oxidant ( air for instance ) and the cold combustible pure fuel . This study by the Bureau of Mines is concerned only with ignition produced by a continuous jet of gas ( hot ) flowing into a practically quiescent cold mix- The investigation of ignition by bursts of hot gases or by turbulent jets is outside the scope of this report , and work performed on this phase of the problem has been published elsewhere

Although many mining companies apply ergonomic principles, it is usually done either informally and/or reactively. An example of an informal approach is replacing worn equipment (such as seats) with models that have ergonomic features. Another example is modifying a task to eliminate safety hazards. Such approaches reduce risk-factor exposures that can lead to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). A reactive approach is followed when modifying a task/ equipment after an MSD occurs. However, neither of these approaches involves a systematic method of proactively applying ergonomic principles to actually prevent injuries or illnesses. This paper discusses how Vulcan Materials Company applied ergonomic principles and implemented interventions to reduce risk-factor exposures.

Coal seams form over millions of years by the biochemical decay and metamorphic transformation of plant materials. This coalification process produces large quantities of byproduct gases, such as methane and carbon dioxide. The amount of these byproducts increases with the rank of coal. It is the highest for anthracite, where for every ton of coal nearly 1,900 lb of water, 2,420 lb (20,000 ft3) of carbon dioxide, and 1,186 lb (27,000 ft3) of methane are produced [Hargraves 1973]. Most of these gases escape to the atmosphere during the coalification process, but a small fraction is retained in the coal. The amount of gas retained in the coal depends on a number of factors, such as the rank of coal, the depth of burial, the type of rock in the immediate roof and floor, local geologic anomalies, and the tectonic pressures and temperatures prevalent at that time. The gases are contained under pressure and mainly adsorbed on the surface of the coal matrix, but a small fraction of gases is also present in the fracture net-work of the coal. Methane is the major component of gases in coal, comprising 80%–90% or more of the total gas volume. The balance is made up of ethane, propane, butane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, oxygen, and argon.

Published optical microscopic and X- ray diffraction characteristics of the following compounds are critically evaluated and compared with Bureau of Mines data : Tricalcium aluminate , calcium monoa luminate , dodecacalcium heptaluminate , dicalcium silicate , tricalcium silicate , and sodium aluminate . A recommended set of definitive optical and X- ray diffraction characteristics is presented . These values are used to identify products of the lime soda sinter process for production of alumina . Polymorphism of gamma- , beta- , and alpha prime - dicalcium silicate is reexamined , and new data are presented on polymorphism of tricalcium silicate and sodium aluminate by high- temperature X- ray diffractometry . Polymorphism is not observed for tricalcium aluminate , calcium monoaluminate , and dodecacalcium heptaluminate . Bureau of Mines data indicating a stoichiometry of 12Ca0.7A10 for the phase 5Ca0.3A1 0₂ are discussed . A critical review of the literature concerning calcium dia luminate and sodium undecaluminate ( 8 -A10 ) is also included .

A CLAY, sand, and gravel deposit known as the "buried valley" of the Susquehanna River is situated in the Northern field of the anthracite region of Pennsylvania near Wilkes-Barre. The presence of this buried valley and the uncertainty regarding the extent and physical condition of the water-bearing valley-fill deposits have made great care necessary in mining operations to avoid breaking the strata between the mine workings and the valley-fill deposits to the extent that inundation of the mine workings would follow. The principal factor that threatens to cut short the life of the anthracite industry, to curtail production, and to affect the economic structure of the people and business dependent on anthracite for their livelihood is inundation of anthracite mines (6,7).3

The objectives of this study were to examine a representative cross section of formal safety analysis techniques developed for the nuclear and aerospace industries, to recommend those methods that would be suitable for application to the mining industry, and to include those methods in a user's manual. Volume XI of this report, the user's manual, describes several methods that were determined to be immediately transferrable to the mining industry. The handbook gives detailed instructions on appropriate application and utilization of the methods. Other techniques will require further development before they can be effectively transferred to the mining industry.

Until now there has been controversy about which tests should be performed to diagnose early Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS). Initial screening questions, especially about tingling and numbness, routinely given to patients prior to examinations proved to be a very important tool in the diagnostic process1, 4. However, standardized tests that are simple, quick, valid and reliable are needed to support a diagnosis of HAVS. Purpose: To find the most valid and reliable tests to diagnose HAVS. Material and Methods Five major tests were performed on Group I and Group II. Group I: Control group of 12 volunteers including students, nurses, secretaries and physicians with no history of using vibrating tools (age 20 to 50y, mean age 38.5y; 5male, 5 female.) Group II: 12 workers (age 17 to 65y, mean age 39y; 9 male, 3 female) were sent by a local trade union with a history of using vibrating power tools on their jobs for varying amounts of time (mean 12.2y, from 0.5 to 35y.) Pre-enrollment survey showed that each had more than 4 complaints commonly associated with use of vibrating tools (including numbness, tingling, weakness, pain, finger color or nail changes, temperature change, and difficulty moving.) 1. Sensory nerve conductive tests: Amplitude and nerve conductive velocity (NCV) were evaluated. 2. Cold Stress-Temperature recovery time tests were done on the index finger of the dominant hand following these steps: Confirm water bath is within 4-5º C. Place the finger temperature probe on pad of the index finger of the dominant hand. Record temperature every 15 seconds. Place subject’s hand in the cold- water bath for exactly five minutes. Record temperature every 15 seconds for ten minutes. 3. Blood test: Venous blood was taken by a 21-gauge needle with the yellow collection tube adapter. S-ICAM, Sera Thrombomodulin, Norepinephrine levels were evaluated by Henderson Research Centre, Canada. 4. Finger Sensory Evaluation: Semmes-Weinstein monofilament test and 2-point discrimination tests were performed on bilateral fingers. 5. Digital blood pressure test: blood pressure was measured in bilateral index fingers. Results 1. Median nerve sensory conductive amplitude from palm to wrist : GI: mean 96 ± 31µm; GII: mean 43± 30µm; for dominant hands. GI vs GII: P<0.001

Specific data are presented on the paraffinic, unsaturated, aromatic, and alicyclic hydrocarbons, alcohols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, and sulfur compounds, and an assortment of fuels, fuel blends, hydraulic fluids, engine oils, and miscellaneous combustible gases and vapors.

The problems presented by old mine workings affect both present day mining and land development. An automated method of locating these old mines from the surface using electrical resistivity techniques was de-veloped earlier under a Bureau of Mines contract. Subsequent Bureau research has refined the techniques and expanded the area of study to a variety of geologic provinces. During this research, six mining areas in the United States were in-vestigated with the Bureau&apos;s automated resistivity method. This report describes the mining areas involved and the results of the resistivity investigations, which showed a high rate of success in detecting old mines. It also describes the field measurement techniques and data analysis procedures.

"During the last eight years there has been a noticeable increase in the use of permissible equipment in gassy and dusty coal mines. This trend has undoubtedly been toward greater safety in mining, but in spite of this all is not well ""along the front.""In many mines those in charge, either through ignorance or supposed economy, have neglected to install sufficient copper and maintain good bonding on the rails used for return circuits to have a safe working voltage for the permissible equipment which is intended to afford them safety.Low voltage, when properly analyzed, is not economy but frequently is an expensive oversight. Burned-out armatures, controllers, rheostats, and switches are costly in themselves to repair or replace, but the greatest cost in many instances is the loss of production resulting from idle and broken-down equipment.From a safety standpoint, excessive low voltage where permissible equipment is necessary is almost criminal negligence. A burn-out of any kind is liable to cause an arc that may burn its way through a casing wall and bring about a hazardous condition if gas or dust in explosive proportions should be present. Again, all wiring, both interior and exterior to the apparatus, is subject to the extra heating consequent upon low voltage. It should be remembered that if the voltage drops the current must increase a corresponding amount in order that the same work may be accomplished; and as the heating effect is as the square of the current, an enormous overheating of the electrical parts and wiring often takes place. This heating effect is especially detrimental to trailing cables used on portable equipment, because under the most favorable conditions the size of cable selected is only barely sufficient to do its work properly at a safe working temperature; therefore, when the extra current load is added because of poor voltage, overheating is sure to result, with consequent deterioration of the insulation, This effect greatly increases the liability of cable failures in service, and in turn adds to the hazards incident to the use of portable equipment of the permissible type involving the use of trailing cables.Some manufacturers have tried -to protect their equipment from low voltage, especially below a certain point, by -installing low-voltage relays which will trip when the voltage falls to a predetermined value. It is understood that some operators have hesitated or refused to install such low-voltage protection because they were aware that the voltage conditions were so poor that the equipment could not operate under the safe limits set. It is difficult to understand how any progressive company that is willing to go to the ex-pense of installing permissible equipment could be so shortsighted in this phase of common sense, safety, and economy."

This report describes the feasibility of mining the oil shale deposits of the Piceance Creek basin in Colorado by an integrated open pit system. The study is based upon a comprehensive analysis of pertinent environmental, economic, and engineering factors. Ten mining cases are investigated, and the mine design and cost estimates for each case are presented in this report. Nine of the cases represent three cutoff grades, defining oil shale ore as equal to and above 15 gallons per ton (gpt), 20 gpt, and 25 gpt at three ore production levels of 500,000 tons per day (TPD), 1,250,000 TPD, and 2,500,000 TPD. The tenth case is an alternate design of the 500,000 TPD production rate at the above 15 gpt cutoff grade. The report consists of Volume I, a technical and cost comparison of the ten cases; Volume II-Part I, a detailed explanation of the estimating methods used; and Volume II-Part 2, a more detailed discussion of the technical and cost features of the ten cases than is presented in Volume I.

Annoyance, fatigue, and musculoskeletal pain have been reported during prolonged exposures to propulsion-generated vibration in military propeller aircraft1. The objective of this study was to determine the vibration mitigation properties of selected seat cushions and the effects of occupant seating posture during exposure to higher frequency multi-axis vibration associated with military propeller aircraft. Methods A Navy E-2C Hawkeye crew seat was mounted onto the Six Degree-of-Freedom Motion Simulator (SIXMODE). Six seat pan cushion configurations were tested during exposure to an E-2C vibration signal collected in the field1. Seat pan cushions 1 – 5 were used with the original E-2C seat back cushion. Cushion configuration 6 included seat pan cushion 5 with a prototype seat back cushion. Triaxial accelerometer pads were mounted onto the seat pan and seat back cushions to measure the vibration entering the human. Data were collected for seven subjects seated upright with their backs in contact with the seat (back-on) and not in contact with the seat (back-off). Spectral analysis techniques were used to analyze data at the two dominant frequencies associated with the propulsion system (propeller rotation frequency (PRF) ~18.5 Hz, and blade passage frequency (BPF) ~73.5 Hz). Overall accelerations were also calculated between 1 and 80 Hz. Vibration Total Values (VTVs) were calculated using the weighted seat pan and seat back (back-on only) accelerations and compared to the comfort reactions given in ISO 2631-1: 19972. Results In general, the highest accelerations observed at the seat pan occurred in the fore-and-aft (X) direction at both the PRF and the BPF for all cushions and both postures. The most pronounced effect was at the BPF in the X direction, where all configurations showed significantly lower seat pan accelerations than configuration 1 (original E-2C cushion) with the back-on posture. Configuration 5 was the exception with the back-off posture (Fig. 1A, Repeated Measures ANOVA, P<0.05). The most pronounced effect of posture occurred at the PRF in the X direction, where all cushion configurations showed significantly lower seat pan accelerations with the back-off posture (Fig. 1B). All configurations except configuration 2 showed similar VTVs as compared to Configuration 1 (Fig. 2, P<0.05). Configuration 2 tended to show the lowest weighted acceleration levels. A study of copper cementation on iron was initiated to determine the effect that deposited copper has upon subsequent cementation. A microscopic investigation of cementation on an iron surface showed that cupric ion precipitates predominately on a growing copper deposit attached to the iron surface. A kinetic study of the cementation process in a revolving drum showed that the cementation rate is enhanced by the copper deposit attached to the iron surface and by the discrete copper particles of a cement copper slurry. The kinetic study also indicated that the character of the deposit is affected by the major anion in the solution. The cementation process is visualized to occur as a series of electrochemical cells in which cupric ion precipitates on copper dendrites attached to the iron surface.

This petroleum-engineering report of the Atlanta oil field in BO them Arkansas reviews reservoir conditions and pressure-production history of one of the important Smackover limestone fields in southern Arkansas. The study of the field was made and the report prepared to aid operators in this and similar fields to increase the efficiency of recovery through the application of better engineering practices. A similar study of the Magnolia field in Arkansas by Carpenter and Schroeder was the first of these reports prepared under a joint agreement between the Arkansas Oil and Can Commission and the Bureau of Mines. The increasing demands for petroleum and its products and the steadily increasing cost of discovering and developing oil field; emphasize the importance of conserving known reserves of oil and gas. In recent years vast improvements have been made in the technique of oil recovery, both by better utilization of the natural energy stored in the reservoir and by improved methods of applying external energy to the reservoir system. This report may aid in oil conservation by careful evaluation of the several factors that did or did not contribute the greater recovery in the Atlanta field and by suggesting improvements in production methods and applications.

As part of a general plan for control and economic utilization of the waters of the Missouri River Basin as well as development of its inherent power resources, the Corps of Engineers of the United States Army has under construction a rolled earth dam near the site of old Fort Randall in South Dakota. The dam is in Charles Mix and Gregory Counties on the Missouri River at a point about 922 miles above its mouth. It is approximately 125 air-line miles southeast of Pierre and 55 miles southwest of Mitchell, S. Dak. The storage reservoir to be formed by the dam will extend upstream for 150 miles and, at maximum operating pool level, will cover an area of some 107,000 acres. It will have a storage capacity of 6.2 million acre feat.

The tungsten potentialities of the Combination mine were examined by a mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines in 1947. A report based upon his personal knowledge of the mine and the results of the examination contained recommendations for further investigation. This report presents factual data from Bureau of Mines field investigations begun in August 1947 and continued until December 1948, except for a 5-month recess during the first winter. The Combinat.ion mining property of 52 patented claims and 15 patented mill sites is in the Black Pine mining district, Granite County, Mont., 11 miles northwest of Philipsburg. The altitude in the mine vicinity is approximately 6,500 feet.

Hydrogen sulphide associated with natural gas was noted as early as 1892, at Point Albino, Canada.4 The presence of this impurity was recognized also in other of the earlier oil and gas fields, although the occurrence urea by no means common. However, in recent years, with the development of the producing zones of west Texas and the Texas Panhandle, the production of "sour" crude has increased greatly and hydrogen sulphide has proved a generally troublesome factor--frequently a major problem--in the drilling and operation of many wells in those areas. The problems arising from the drilling and producing of oil or gas wells in hydrogen-sulphide areas, fall under two general divisions: safety problems and corrosion problems. Mention is mane of a third division which is closely related to the other two, that of treating--or the development of processes for the removal of hydrogen sulphide. Potash is one of the principal foods and is necessary for the growth of most vegetables, grains, and fruits. For many years, this country depended entirely upon foreign sources for its supply of potassium compounds. However, during the last 15 years the domestic production of potash has gradually increased, as shown in table 1. 7/ Imports now supply only half of the American market. In 1936, the equivalent of 207,000 tons of K20 was imported, and 210,000 tons was produced domestically. In 1935, domestic consumption was approximately 420,000 tons of potash, a 57 percent increase over that for 1934 and surpassing previous peaks of 1928 and 1930.
