It maintains branch offices in practically all the largest cities east of the Rocky Mountains, and has distributing magazines located in every section where there is a demand for high explosives, with facilities for wagon deliveries. Our mills are all of modern type and are equipped with the most improved machinery for the manufacture of high explosives. The efficiency of our laboratory in conjunction with the high class of labor employed, has enabled us to put on the market an explosive, the quality of which is the result of extensive research and scientific knowledge. Our modern and complete equipment for harbor and railroad transportation insures our patrons of prompt deliveries, which is an essential feature particularly to contractors and those whose facilities for storage are limited.

Shallow buried explosives pose a significant threat to lightweight vehicles and their onboard personnel. To date, designers of lightweight vehicles are limited in their knowledge of what occurs during the blast. The high intensity, short term loading imparted by the explosion is enormously complex and can be significantly affected by a number of parameters including the size, shape, type, detonation point and depth of burial (DOB) of the explosive and the type, density and water content of the soil. Recent advancements in numerical simulations have enabled the complex blast event to be accurately modeled by coupling Eulerian and Lagrangian analyses: the former is well suited to modeling the blast and while the latter, the structural response. Further validation of the modeling technique is considered in the current paper, which details simulations performed utilizing the coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian analysis to the study the blast output of explosives buried in saturated sand. These experiments varied explosive charge size, its depth of burial, the target stand-off (SO) distance and target plate dimension. The investigation concludes with a discussion of the accuracy of the numerical simulations when compared with the experimental observations.

Initiation of small diameter explosives by sympathetic shock pressure in water has been investigated under controlled laboratory conditions. Changes either in the geometry of the donor explosive or its point of initiation can alter the essential characteristics (amplitude and duration) of the resulting shock pressure pulse. The pressure signatures from both spherical and cylindrical explosives donors have been studied, in water as well as in various explosive matrices. This paper summarizes the investigations carried out with both 'primed' and 'non-primed' slurry and emulsion explosive matrices with various types of voids. These measurements serve the basis for predicting distances in water for sympathetic initiation for both spherical and linear charges. It is shown that the explosive-detonator system in combination has a far greater probability of initiation due to sympathetic shock pressure than either the explosive or the detonator alone. Various explosive matrices with air bubbles and glass microballoons have been examined and the differing sensitivities to shock pressure explained on the basis of these measurements. It is also concluded that explosives containing air bubbles instead of microballoons would be significantly more prone to sympathetic initiation.

On the basis of actual parameter of wall control blast in Nanfeng mine, China, the process of dynamic stress changing between two column charges was studied recently for a presplit-cushion blast by holographic photoelasticity. In the experimental model, two holes were simultaneously detonated from both ends (four ignition points). The bottom of the holes were loaded more than other parts (heavy charge). Under these conditions, four consecutive isochromatic fringe patterns at different times were acquired in one loading run, and the characteristics of the stress distributions were compared at different places and times in the holes. It was found that interaction types of stress waves vary along the holes. The theory is posed that the stress wave which is formed by the interaction of earlier producing P wave and later S wave along a distributed line charge is the most important part in all stress waves. Research indicates that a heavy charge in the bottom of the holes is crucial to producing a presplit-cushion effect at the bottom. "End Effect" doesn't affect the magnitude of stress along linking lines between the bottoms. The chief fields of the "End Effect" are also explained in the paper.

Drilling with tricone drill bits is widely used in the mining industry with a direct impact on drilling safety and costs, however it can be challenging to implement a new supplier of tricone drill bits, choosing a new model of this accessory due to the normal variations of the rock mass or even due to the acquisition of new and modern drilling equipment for open pit blasting operations. This article identifies the most common mechanisms of failure in productive drill holes of tricone drill bits, both in open-pit coal and metal mines, in two South American countries. It also emphasizes the important issues that must be addressed for the optimization of the performance of these accessories, such as the correct identification of the rock mass, the drilling parameters, and the impact of autonomous drilling on new equipment with this technology. The article presents some of the successful actions to economically improve the performance of drill bits considering the close relationship in the field with the supplier's technical representatives and factory designers, as well as the commercial interrelationship between their respective business areas. The article concludes by discussing the future of tricone drill bit design development, its environmental management, and possible new advances in its manufacture.

Recent trends in blasting engineering and its related fields, at the level of professional academia, have tended to exclude detailed discussion and examination of the formative experiences of the engineering student. In particular, the extra-curricular aspects of the undergraduate program in engineering—focused, in this case, on the summer job—will be shown to contain a wealth of heretofore underappreciated knowledge in the field. In Surveying the Damage: Post Traumatic Stress and Pre-Blast Surveys, I intend to outline and examine some of the more unusual experiences afforded me by my work as a preblast surveyor in the summer of 2007. In this capacity, I was required to make a visual note of existing conditions of surrounding residential and commercial structures within 100 m (328 ft) of two separate blasting sites in central-east Ontario. In the interest of both convenience and specificity, I have attempted to organize the paper as a crossdiscipline survey of the field according to the conference’s list of suggested topics. In the paper’s first section, I will discuss the topic of Environmental Improvement and Remediation by using a case study in which not one, but two dead cats were found during the course of a routine pre-blast survey. The second section will undertake a discussion of on-site blaster gossip as an entry point into a wider discussion of Workplace Communications Management. In the paper’s final section, I will detail an early morning encounter with a 300 lb, stark-naked trailer park inhabitant as a cross-sectional analysis of the topics of Drilling in Hostile Environments, Vibration and Seismology (Sizemology?), Ethics in Blasting, Crisis Management, Risk Assessment and Public Relations. It is my hope that this paper will begin to open up a critical space for discussion of the formative experiences of engineering students during the undergraduate university program in terms of their far-reaching effects on later performance within the industry.

Most studies of crack response have focused on opening and closing of a crack in the plane of the wall in which the crack occurs. Crack movement also occurs perpendicular or normal to the plane of the wall. This paper will examine and compare the in-plane and out-of-plane (normal) response of cracks in two different residences near limestone quarries. In two locations, sensors that measure in-plane and normal displacement were installed side-by-side on the same crack, allowing direct comparison of the two modes of response. In a third location, a perpendicular pair of displacement sensors was installed in a corner of a room to observe the bidirectional response of the structure at a corner. Both long-term and dynamic data were recorded with the same sensors; temperature, humidity, and air over pressures were also recorded to compare blast and weather effects. Measurements show that ratios of out of plane to in plane response to dynamic events can vary. However, the ratios of out of plane (normal) response to vibratory events to that of climatological change is still as small as the ratio for in plane crack responses.

The ability to fire multiple blasts simultaneously can provide significant benefits to any open pit mining operation. Reduced blast-related downtime by reducing blast events can increase equipment utilization and maximize material movement. Significant sequencing benefits can also be delivered, associated with reduced equipment relocation. This paper describes the work completed in partnership between Orica and Oyu Tolgoi to successfully demonstrate that combined production-trim and midsplit blasting could be implemented successfully while successfully managing the risk of increased damage to the final walls. The paper details the methodology used to assess key performance measures linked to final wall damage and compares the performance between the following blasting methods. • Free face trim blasting vs. combined production-trim blasting • Presplit blasting vs. midsplit blasting. The results of the initial trial blasts are presented, along with the method agreed by the key site stakeholders for ongoing application. The method used to keep the risk of final wall damage to an acceptable level is explained, along with the benefits delivered to Oyu Tolgoi operations associated with the initial 12 months of application.

Blasting is the most effective and economical tool available to fragment and move rock for most applications. If properly executed, it can improve down-stream operations such as loading, hauling and crushing. It is not possible, however, to have full control over the energy released by the explosives when a poorly designed blast pattern is used. A poorly designed blast can produce serious damage to equipment and create a potentially hazardous condition to people. Advanced mining technology has been developed to address these potential hazards and optimize the blast pattern. This profiling technology can assist with blast planning and provide quick, precise data about the condition of the rock structure to be blasted. The 3G BlastMetrix system presented here uses three-dimensional (3D) stereo photogrammetry to model the rock mass in a fast, practical and safe manner. Through the image overlapping method, a 3D model is created with thousands of points that provide a significant amount of data regarding geology, geometry and topography conditions. The blasting plan can then be made in a way to optimize the rock fragmentation and avoid areas that could create flyrock. This paper is a case study concerning usage of stereo photogrammic surveying and borehole survey systems in a blasting operation at the Brazilian Quarry, Incopel. One 3D image of a drilled bench was generated using photogrammetry survey technology and the borehole survey data collected using the rodded Boretrak borehole survey system. Utilizing the minimum burden profile reports, explosive loading could be done accurately, resulting in an optimized blast with good heave and fragmentation as well as increased safety.

Whatever system is devised to control noise and ground vibration from blasting operations must present an effective compromise between the rights of the individual to be undisturbed by the actions of others, and the necessity for society, the whole of the population individually and collectively, to have the services and the products of commerce, industry and transportation along with the relaxation of recreational and cultural pursuits, all at a price within the means of the same society. One of the first jurisdictions in North America to attempt to quantify acceptable environmental limits for specific blasting operations was Ontario, Canada’s largest and most populous province. A process for development of guidelines applicable only to quarries and strip-mining operations was begun in 1974 and culminated with their inclusion in a “Model By-Law” published by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment in August 1978. This paper examines the process of development of the final guideline document and its application over the last 25 years. While acknowledging that the published guidelines for air blast and ground vibration control have provided a useful and generally workable framework for the purposes of land use planning and complaint or damage claim reduction, a number of flaws, weaknesses and misinterpretations connected with their application are identified. Recommendations for amendment of the controversial items are submitted with a view to making these and potentially similar guidelines in other jurisdictions, more acceptable to both government and industry.

Avalanches are commonly mitigated through the use of explosives at ski resorts and above transportation corridors. Surprisingly, very little research has been conducted on snowpack response to explosive inputs, and efforts to model this response have been limited. The purpose of this ongoing research project is to ascertain an understanding of the dynamic snowpack response in relation to explosive size and height above the snowpack, coupled with snow conditions, to enhance avalanche control. A system of sensors and computer-controlled data acquisition components has been created to record the movement of snow resulting from the charge detonation. The system records acceleration vertically and radially within the snowpack at two distances from the point of detonation as well as blast air pressure at one location during explosive events. The data at two locations allows inferences to be made about the transmittance and attenuation of shock waves through the snowpack radially as well as vertically. The data shows that raising charges above the surface results in increased snowpack dynamic response when compared to surface detonations. Applying power function regression to accelerations for individual charge elevations, it was determined that both radial and vertical rates of attenuation were not dependant on charge elevation. Additionally, raising the charge also resulted in increased dynamic response at depth within the snowpack

Previous work in which rock properties and blasting parameters (geometry, charging and timing) were reported together with truck filling times, is taken as a starting point for a thorough analysis of the influence of the former on the mucking velocity. The experimental set was composed by 11 blasts made in an open pit mine. Non-parametric, distribution-free statistics is applied. The mucking rates (in bank cubic meters per unit of bucket volume and per hour) appear to be clearly dependent on the explosive energy and powder factor, both magnitudes combined as energetic powder factor (energy per unit of rock volume). The mucking rate is a non-monotonic function of such factor in the range of the blasts analyzed. The determination of the function is optimum when the fraction of the explosive below grade is not considered and when the explosive energy is qualified as that delivered at a partial detonation regime. Different types of loaders seem appropriate for different energy levels. At low levels both front loaders and rope shovels obtain small productivities without a statistically significant difference in their performance. At high energy levels, front loaders qualify higher than rope shovels. Mucking velocities can be equally small at low energy powder factors and at high ones if rope shovels are involved.

"A computational model of rock blasting is being developed to examine the blasting problems associated with in situ oil shale processing. This model, however, will also be useful as a design tool for the traditional problems in rock blasting. The model includes fundamental treatment of both shock-wave propagation and the accumulation of brittle fracture in the rock. As a result, the model accurately predicts the degree and extent of fracturing as functions of design parameters. The model has proven useful for making parametric studies and for evaluation of alternate blast designs. This paper demonstrates the use of the numerical model to simulate the fracturing induced by the detonation of a vertical explosive column near a bench. The fracturing induced by three differentexplosives indicate that (in the chosen geometry) the most efficient breakage is done by a column of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil mixture (ANFO) used with a toe charge of aluminized ANFO. There was too much unfractured rock left when ANFO was used alone; aluminized ANFO used for the entire explosive column caused excessive fracturing. A final case involves ANFO used alone to fracture a different rock type. This case points out that in a different rock type, the ANFO will not leave excessive unfractured rock."

Computational techniques in determining particle size distributions after blasting is getting wide acceptance. A well known approach to extract this kind of information from digital images is edge detection. The number of edge points on a given image increase proportional to the increase of the particles on the image. By selecting a conveniently smooth threshold, counting the signed edge pixels may be a suitable metric further used to quantify the number of particles in the image. Here we propose an image processing algorithm together with Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) to efficiently count the rock particles with various sizes on a given surface. To determine a suitable approximation for a mapping between the number of edge pixels and the number of particles, ANFIS is a suitable tool. As a trainable classifier ANFIS proved itself as being better efficient approach than other well known multilayer perceptron classifiers. ANFIS is trained by using convenient training data pairs previously experienced from empirically counted sample images. When given a new image containing the particle information of selected surface, the hybrid neuro fuzzy image processing approach provides satisfying performance on counting the correct number of particles up to the given scale of sizes. In this paper an experimantal study for assessment of particle size using ANFIS is presented.

A few years ago, the term Track & Trace for explosives was only known in Europe and Brazil at most; the introduction of this technology is experiencing an undreamt-of boom worldwide. More and more countries are enacting legislation to introduce Track & Trace of explosives and follow Europe and Brazil on this path. At present, the world's leading manufacturers are already using such solutions, are in the process of implementing them, or are in the planning process. However, based on the experience gained in Europe, there are outstanding challenges for all manufacturers. These are questions of compliance, logistics, distribution, and, of course, especially, the necessary adaptation of the production environment. However, this development involves considerable effort on the part of the manufacturers. New devices for marking the explosives and digitally recording the data are integrated into the production process. This should be done as cost-effectively as possible, without restricting production capacity and speed, and with as few process changes as possible. This paper uses real-life customer experiences examples to explain paths from project design to real implementation. Lessons learned from the experience of European explosives manufacturers are presented, missteps are described, and solutions are identified. Individual steps along this path are explained, and solutions are told to avoid pitfalls and bottlenecks. Finally, it refers to the risk analysis and concrete examples in implementing the planning into production. Methods of marking various explosives are shown, and the use of Track & Trace to solve logistics tasks in picking and shipping explosives, including the data exchange with ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems.

Rock blasting at quarries represents multiple challenges not easy to see at first sight. Aggregate industries face similar or superior prices for explosives while extracting a material that usually is of less value of metal mining operations. Therefore, learning to optimize a quarry operation can be a perfect training for a position in blasting at larger metal mining operations.
