The extension of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge north of Iceland has collectively been referred to as the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridges (AMOR). The AMOR extends from the northern shelf of Iceland, to the Siberian shelf in the Laptev Sea, passing en route through the Norwegian- Greenland Sea, the narrow gateway of the Fram Strait, and across the Eurasia Basin. The AMOR is 4000 km long and is divided into six super segments: 1) the Kolbeinsey Ridge, 2) the Mohns Ridge, 3) the Knipovich Ridge, 4) the Molloy Ridge, 5) the Lena Trough, and 6) the Gakkel Ridge. After continental rifting at 60-50 million years ago, around 2.5 million km2 of oceanic seafloor has formed by seafloor spreading - resulting in the formation of the Norwegian- Greenland Sea and the Eurasian Basin. This northernmost part of the global ridge system is anomalous in several ways: The seafloor spreading takes place at an ultraslow rate (less than 2 cm/y) with spreading rates decreasing northward to around 1 cm/y at the Gakkel Ridge - which is the most slow-spreading ridge on Earth. As a result, the volcanic activity along the northern part of the AMOR is low, the oceanic crust is unusually thin (around 3,5 km at the Knipovich Ridge, Kandilarov et al.2010), and the rift valley is deep (average water depth > 3 km). In the southern part of the AMOR, the ridge system is affected by the Icelandic plume and a hot spot below Jan Mayen. The ridge-plume interaction results in higher volcanic productivity, unusually thick oceanic crust (9-11 km, Kandilarov et al. 2012) and shallow ridge segments (1500-100 m). The AMOR also display contrasting spreading regimes, whereas some super segments are dominated by orthogonal spreading (Kolbeinsey and Gakkel Ridge) others are characterized by highly oblique spreading (Mohns and Knipovich ridges). Some ridge segment displays asymmetric spreading, like the Mohns Ridge where core complexes preferentially form along the northwestern flank. Together these variations in ridge characteristics results in large diversity of hydrothermal systems and associated mineral deposits.

Rodriguez Seamount, located 150 km off the central California coast at the base of the continental slope, was studied using the ROV Tiburon aboard MBARI?s R/V Western Flyer, October 13-16, 2003. Fe-Mn crust and rock samples were collected along the SW flank of the seamount at water depths from 700 to 2100 m; bottom-water dissolved oxygen content (O2) and temperature were determined at each sample site. Fifty-three samples of bulk crusts, crust layers, and surface scrapes (~0.5 mm) were analyzed for 59 elements. Data allow for the correlation of crust compositions with precisely known water depths and seawater O2 measured at the actual site of sample collection. This is the first detailed study of Fe-Mn crust compositions in a region of strong continental-margin upwelling. Compared to open-ocean seamount Fe-Mn crusts, Rodriguez crusts have significantly higher (2-6 fold) mean concentrations of Fe (26.9%), Al (1.65%), Si (13.0%), Cr (82 ppm), Th (64 ppm), and Ag (1.7 ppm); and significantly lower (2-8 fold) mean concentrations of Ca, P, Bi, Co, Cu, Ni, Tl, and especially Te (8.2 times lower). All but one Fe/Mn ratio are >1 compared to <1 ratios for open-ocean crusts. O2 contents (0.35-2.03 ml/L) are nearly perfectly corrected with water depth and elements correlated with one are correlated with the other. The Fe-Mn surface scrapes represent 60-450 ka (mean 150 ka) of growth, whereas the dissolved oxygen contents of seawater represent an instant in time. Assuming that the entire sample set was affected uniformly by oceanographic changes, we suggest that correlation of elements with O2 may reflect oceanographic processes. O2 has a negative correlation with P, V, As, Fe, U, Be, Pb, Cr, Mg, Y, Bi, Te, and REEs (except Ce) and a positive correlation with aluminosilicate-hosted elements (Al, K, Rb, Cs). This later relationship is related solely to water depth, indicating that detritus shed down the seamount slopes accumulates in greater abundances in deeper-water crusts. Si/Al ratios indicate that the detritus includes a large component of biosilica produced by upwelling-mediated high productivity. These observations are supported by positive correlations of aluminosilicate-hosted elements with crust growth rates (range 1.2-13.0 mm/Myr). In contrast, other elements (Sr, Co, Mn, Mg, Te, As, Mo, V, W, U, Ti, Ni, REEs, etc.) are negatively correlated with growth rates. Growth rate has a weak positive correlation with O2. These compositional characteristics indicate that even though low-O2 seawater acts as a reservoir for Mn and associated elements and produces slow growth rates, which would allow for the concentration of elements and surface oxidation processes to occur, the high rate of input of detritus and high bioproductivity ameliorate the strong concentration of most metals. This dilution is significantly enhanced by the doubling of FeOOH in the crusts--the main cause of the generally high growth rates compared to open-ocean crusts. The high growth rates limit the oxidation of Co, Tl, and especially Te on the crust surface, which is reflected by their relatively low concentrations. Within the range of oxygen contents measured, O2 has less of an influence on crust chemistry than does the availability and incorporation of FeOOH and detritus.

The two HYFIFLUX cruises of the German RV SONNE (SO 99/1995 and SO 134/1998) were organized in the framework of a co-operation between several German universities and two European marine research partners. It is a multidisciplinary program for the study of hydrothermalism with its associated geological, mineralogical, and biological processes in the North Fiji Basin (NFB) in the SW-Pacific. The main achievements of the HYFIFLUX cruises were detailed multibeam Hydrosweep mapping in order to identify the detailed tectonic setting, water sampling at hydrothermally active vents, mineral sampling at inactive sites with sulfide, sulfate, and silica mineralizations, and sampling of basaltic rocks, (Halbach et al. 1999). Oceanic accretion in the NFB is characterized by a double spreading system (Auzende et al. 1994),with one spreading axis located in the median part of the basin (Central Fiji Ridge, CFR) and the second one located immediately west of the Fiji platform (West Fiji Ridge). Most of our investigations were done in the northern part of the N 15° segment of the CFR, which corresponds to area A of our program, area D is located farther south in the NFB and corresponds to the N-S segment of the CFR (Fig. 1). During previous works under the French-Japanese STARMER project, the active ?White Lady? mound and the extinct Père Lachaiseí site were sampled; these samples were studied by Bendel et al. 1993. Here an inactive hydrothermal field was studied, where there were many sediment-covered chimneys in various stages of disintegration, (Bendel et al. 1993). Research on modern hydrothermal systems provides quantitative measures of the processes of formation of hydrothermal fluids and of precipitation mechanisms from them. Studies of ancient deposits provide new information regarding volcanological processes that are related to the deposits, as well as data on their spatial and temporal compositional variations. Mew exploration guidelines result from both aspects of research. The most fundamental requirement for large metalliferous hydrothermal systems is an abundant heat supply for the upper two kilometers of the crust. This heat may come from a focused heal source (shallow-level subvolcanic intrusion), but ambient heat also may have provided enough energy for the reactions necessary to effect leaching of metals, especially where heat flow is particularly high (i.e. very large or high-temperature magmatic source, such as ultramafic environments). For most VMS systems, the majority of the metals were derived through leaching from footwall strata; in addition interstratal fluids may enter subvolcanic intrusions during episodes of magma a chamber "cracking," engendering some &apos;?magmatic" component in the hydrothermal system. Direct contributions of metalliferous magmatic fluid also may be significant from arc-related or back-arc felsic or alkalis systems. These latter contributions may form exceptionally high - grade portions in some deposits. Subvolcanic intrusions, which are excellent indicators of high heat flow and may have been the direct driving mechanisms for some stems undergo two stages of alteration: On intrusion emplacernent. fluids may rapidly enter and react with their mesostatic portions, evident in the sills in the Middle Valley. High temperature interactions caused albitization and destruction of oxides and sulfides, releasing metals. During terminal hydrothermal stages, the metalliferous fluid collapsed into the intrusions, forming disseminated and vein sulfides.

Transplanting the steps used in exploring and developing mineral deposits on land into the marine environment will help developers. While familiar to oil and gas explorers and many other sea-based industries, the marine environment is so alien to the 90s terrestrial miner that the phrase ?terrestrial mines in the sea? is useful for reinforcing the fundamental parallels in mining sulphides at sea and on land. As on land, the processes of ?pre-feasibility study? and ?feasibility study? will determine the economics of mining a deposit. For many, the step into the sea can detract from the need to follow these familiar and recognised steps used when any new deposit is found on land. The technology to mine sulphides in the 1500 to 2000 m depth range exists. Currently, it is not found in a single, integrated and commercially available system but every element available to build such as system is. Transplanting the thinking of the leaders of the terrestrial mining industry into the sea will perhaps be the greatest challenge and reinforcing the basic steps of discovery - pre-feasibility through to feasibility is the best way to achieve this. After all on land one doesn?t ask ?Can we profitably mine it?? before one can authoritatively answer ?What have we found??. Research by Nautilus Minerals Corporation suggests that the mining of seafloor massive sulphides (SMS) will not only be profitable but potentially lower in both capital and operating costs than prevail in most terrestrial deposits. Nautilus is also acutely aware that with the first SMS deposits under title, it will be setting the standards for seafloor mining into the new millenium. Indeed, we have trained on us not only the eyes of the mining industry waiting to see if SMS deposits really do offer radically better returns, but other stakeholders of the sea and the capital markets. Mistakes by any SMS developer could land all developers in ?hot water?. The rush to exploit our deposits for economic gain will be tempered by ensuring there is adequate public debate and consultation for our environmental code. Failure in any facet of a marine mining development could set back the move to the ocean floor.

Metal market prices rose drastically in 2006, and most broke historical records as shown in Figs. 1-4. This increase has been basically driven by economic growth in Asian countries, especially China. The growth trend is expected to continue for several years. Then, India will follow the same growth trend. Their metal demands keep the price levels high for 20 years or more. One more additional important factor on the metal market prices is hedge funds come into the market. Japan imports all metals for domestic use from overseas. The amounts imported were 1.27 million tons in copper, 0.32 million tons in lead, 0.59 million tons in zinc, 0.20 million tons in nickel, and 1.18 million tons in manganese, respectively in 2006 (Source: http://www.jogmec.go.jp/j_resourse/index.html#03). Though mainly we import the concentrates and our domestic customer smelters take the part of metallurgical leaching, the payment necessary for purchasing the concentrates is estimated about US$ 10 billions in 2006. The payments in 2005 and in 2003 were about a half and a quarter of the 2006, respectively. Japan must have effective counter measures to reduce the future payments.

The summit of L_ihi submarine volcano changed dramatically after seismic activity beneath L_ihi during the month of August 1996. Bathymetric re-surveys of the L_ihi edifice using SeaBeam, Simrad and deep-towed Reson-Focus multibeam systems showed the presence of new north-south striking fissures, normal faults and a new pit crater located at the site of a former 300-meter high volcanic cone. Comparisons between the pre-1996 SeaBeam data and the new bathymetry show a net loss of about 100 million cubic meters of rock volume on the summit. This loss is localized at a new pit crater -- the 300-meter deep by 1,300-meter wide Pele&apos;s Pit. Submersible observations with Pisces V show the northern edge of Pele&apos;s Pit to be bounded by a normal fault located north of the site of the former Pele&apos;s Vents cone that has disappeared into the new pit crater. A new hydrothermal field, the Ikaika Vents, extending from a water depth of 1,311 meters to 1,287 meters has formed at the northeastern edge of the floor of Pele&apos;s Pit. Submersible observations of these new Ikaika Vents during September 1996 showed vigorous venting at the site with extensive white-colored bacterial mats hanging off the rock face above the vents. Follow-up mapping and sampling of the vent sites during August 1997 showed vent temperatures of up to 198°C, dense populations of vent shrimps around the vents and a centimeters-thick veneer of fine-grained polymetallic sulfide mineralization along the rock walls above individual vents. The mineralogy of the sulfides shows a barite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and pyrite composition.

"With the acceptance of an application and a signed contract for prospecting deep-sea sulfides (2012) between the Russian Federation and the ISA, at present it is particularly important to assess the quality of oceanic sulfide minerals and to reliably estimate their resources.Some procedures of geochemical classification (chemical analyses, mineral composition of SMS) and calculations (density of ore, density of the mineral part of the ore, porosity and moisture contents) were used for estimation of mineral resources potential.The key characteristics for estimating the predicted resources of hydrothermal ore fields are the metal contents and the density of wet and dry sulfide ores. However, in the future it is impossible to provide an estimate of the predicted resources without taking into account the following important factors:- the quantitative ratio of main sulfide minerals;- proportion of non-metallic components (opal, quartz, talc);- the replacement of primary minerals by copper sulfides;- texture-structural features of sulfide ores.The offered mineral classification of the SMS is based on the prevalence of minerals in the ores and partly on their composition. The main ore-forming minerals of SMS are pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Sulfide mineralization is accompanied by the presence of nonmetallic minerals, where quartz and opal prevail, and where we also meet aragonite, talcochlorite and anhydrite."

In 1994 and 1998 the German research vessel R/V Sonne undertook detailed mapping and sampling of the largely uncharted offshore areas of the Tabar-Lihir-Tanga-Feni island chain in the New Ireland Basin of Papua New Guinea. The New Ireland Basin occupies a fore-arc position with respect to the formerly active Manus-Kilinailau arc-trench system and hosts a series of Pliocene to Recent alkaline volcanoes which are built on rifted Miocene sedimentary basement. Several of the volcanoes possess high-level porphyry stocks and active geothermal systems, including gold-depositing hot springs and the giant (40 million ounces) Ladolam gold deposit on the island of Lihir. On the southern flank of Lihir island, a group of three volcanic cones were discovered at water depths from 1.000-1.500 m. The volcanoes are located in a narrow zone of recent seismic activity and elevated heat flow (up to 100 mW/m2). The recovered volcanic rocks consist of fresh alkali-olivine basalts, clinopyroxene-rich basalts (ankaramites), porphyritic phlogopite basalts, and trachybasalts. Unusual gold-rich hydrothermal precipitates were recovered from the summit of the 600 m high Conical Seamount located only about 10 km south of Lihir Island. 1200 kg of sampled material systematically collected with a TV-guided grab from the top plateau (150 x 200 m, 1.050 m water depth) are intensely mineralized with pyrite, marcasite, minor sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena, tennantite/tetrahedrite, and orpiment/realgar together with traces of anglesite, cerrusite, and amorphous silica in stockwork-like veins. Bulk samples of the vein mineralization consist mainly of clays, silica, and disseminated sulfides, and have an unusual high gold content ranging from 1.2-44.0 ppm Au. In some of these samples, grains of native gold (about 1 micron in diameter) were identified by SEM in pyrite and sphalerite. The gold-rich material also contains high concentrations of silver (up to 1000 ppm) and typical epithermal elements such as As (2.6 wt.%), Sb (0.2 wt.%), and Hg (34 ppm). Similar to epithermal deposits on land, which usually have only low base metal contents, the samples from Conical Seamount contain only minor amounts of Zn (max. 4.5 wt.%), Cu (2.0 wt.%), and Pb (2.0 wt.%). Many of the samples recovered from Conical Seamount are virtually identical to the gold ore at Lihir.

Results of the two main drilling operations on hydrothermal fields demonstrate that the two dimensional submersible operations need to be followed by drilling expeditions to study the third dimension of hydrothermal systems and understand hydrothermal and ore forming processes. Two types of environments were drilled recently in basaltic environment on slow spreading ridge, and on a sedimented ridge. Similar work has still to be done and targets to be discussed in other environments such as back-arc basins for felsic rocks environments and slow spreading ridges for ultramafic rock environments.

The 1982 United Nations Convention on the Low of the Sea includes provisions under Article 76 for extending a coastal State&apos;s jurisdiction beyond the 200-nautical-mile (nm) Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and for establishing the seaward limits of sovereign rights over natural resources. Article 76 prescribes a set of methodologies for determining these outer limits based on physiography and sediment thickness. The methodologies were applied to each of the five continental* margin areas of the United States - Atlantic, Pacific, Gulf of Mexico, Alaska, and Pacific Islands-using existing digital hydrographic and geologic data. Figures 1 and 2 show the results of applying the methodologies to the Atlantic, Pacific, Alaskan, and Gulf of Mexico continental shelves. Figure 1 depicts the preliminary limits of each of the Article 76 determinations for the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico continental shelves. The Atlantic limits were described by Carpenter, Thormahlen, and Amato (1995) at the 26th Underwater Mining Institute.1 The limits for the Alaskan continental shelves are shown in Figure 2. Additional areas beyond the 200 nm EEZ are highlighted. These include a small area north of the U.S. - Canada boundary, containing 7,000 km2, a large area north of Point barrow (395,000 km2), and a third area north of the Aleutian Islands (178,000 km2). The shelf between the first two areas appears to have sediments thick enough to qualify for the 1 percent method (Irish Formula); however, year-round ice cover has prevented acquisition of seismic or drill data. The entire northern Alaska shelf is prospective for petroleum The Gulf of Mexico (Figure 1) has two small areas beyond the EEZ known as "doughnut holes." One is south of Louisiana and includes part of the Sigsbee Escarpment, an area believed to have potential for oil and gas. Oil was found on Sigsbee Knoll in cores from Deep Sea Drilling Project&apos;s Leg 1 cruise in 1968. The Sigsbee areas contains about 6,000 km2. The second area is south of the Florida panhandle and contains about 12,000 km2.

The area of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of India is about 2.014 million km2 and the resource evaluation of placer deposits is one of the objectives of Government of India. Placers are detrital metallic minerals found on beaches and in the near shore areas. Quantitatively more important are placer deposits of light heavy minerals such as zircon, ilmenite and rutile. Rivers and other drainage channels are the main carriers of the placers which contain heavy minerals like magnetite, ilmenite, garnet, zircon, monazite, rutile etc. The present beach as well as part of the shelf was land during Pleistocene as a result of the world wide lowering of the sea levels. The coast line shifted a number of times. Hence, the heavy mineral placers on the beaches are expected to extend to offshore areas chiefly with Pleistocene lowered sea level strands. India has extensive deposits of heavy mineral placers along the beaches. Placer deposits of heavy minerals occur in discontinuous patches on the beaches along many parts of the east and west coasts. Along the central west coast of India (12??N - 19? N lat.) the placer containing 14 - 17% ilmenite form an estimated reserve of 4 million tons. On the Ratnagiri coast of Maharashtra, the proportion of heavy mineral varies between 54 and 70% in the bulk samples, consisting mainly of 14 - 39% magnetite and 16 - 30% ilmenite. The National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) surveys show that the sediments off the central west coast consist largely of silty sand, sand silt and clay. The core samples show that a reddish brown clay overlay olive gray clay which in turn overlay heavy mineral rich sands. The heavy mineral concentration ranges upto 90% and has mainly ilmenite and magnetite with minor quantities of apatite, rutile, zircon, kyanite etc. Siddiquie et al. reported 42 - 75% TiO2 in the ilmenite.

The Myra Falls deposits comprise a complexly metal-zoned polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulfide district located 90 km from Campbell River in central Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. The massive sulfide deposits are hosted by subaqueously-deposited rocks of the Devonian age Myra Formation of the Sicker Group volcanic assemblage. The deposits comprise many individual massive sulfide lenses grouped into several major zones within two main felsic volcanic stratigraphic intervals - the upper Lynx-Myra-Price Horizon and the lower H-W Horizon. The largest of these zones, the H-W and Battle, occur within the H-W Horizon. The first claims in the area of what is now Boliden-Westmin?s Myra Falls Operations were staked in 1917. Early prospecting resulted in the discovery of three massive sulfide showings which eventually became the Lynx, Myra and Price mines. Sporadic exploration was carried out until 1961 when Western Mines Ltd. (now Boliden-Westmin Ltd.) acquired the claims. Subsequent ore definition outlined 1.9 million tonnes of ore (approximately 5 years of mine life) in the Lynx deposit, and mining began in 1966. Pre-mining geological reserves (to January 1, 1997) comprised 6.7 million tonnes grading 3.3 g/t Au, 130.6 g/t Ag, 2.0 % Cu, 1.4 % Pb and 10.2 % Zn for the Lynx-Myra-Price deposits, 17.1 million tonnes grading 2.3 g/t Au, 32.7 g/t Ag, 2.3 % Cu, 0.3 % Pb and 4.2 % Zn for the H-W deposits and 4.2 million tonnes grading 1.1 g/t Au, 27.0 g/t Ag, 2.2 % Cu, 0.5 % Pb and 12.0 % Zn for the Battle deposits. Property-wide production to January, 1996 has been 15.7 million tonnes grading 2.1 g/t Au, 58.7 g/t Ag, 1.9 % Cu, and 5.2 % Zn.

The Chavara and Manavalakurichi placer deposits have been known since a long time for their rich reserves of heavy minerals like ilmenite, rutile, monazite etc. While detailed work has been conducted on the mineralogy and texture of the bulk placer sediments, reports on the detailed investigations on individual minerals are relatively scanty. Though, limited work pertaining to the chemistry of ilmenite has been carried out by Nair et al (1995) and Ramakrishnan et al (1997), a comprehensive study of the weathering patterns of ilmenite along the longitudinal and vertical profiles has not been, so far, undertaken. Data on the microscopic analysis of ilmenite from the southwest placers, too, is sketchy. The present work deals with the variation of the weathering undergone by ilmenite in the southwest placer deposits based on chemical and mineralogical analyses.

Drilling of the active Trans-Atlantic Geotraverse (TAG) deposit during ODP Leg 158 indicated that the size of the mound-stockwork complex is approximately 3.9 million tonnes, including 2.7 million tonnes of massive and semi-massive sulfide (ca. 2% Cu) at the seafloor and 1.2 million tonnes of mineralized breccias (ca. 1% Cu) in a subseafloor stockwork. Quartz-pyrite veining in the stockwork zone extends from about 40 meters below seafloor (mbsf) to a depth of 95 mbsf. Siliceous wallrock breccias in the lower part of the stockwork grade abruptly into chloritized basalt breccias at the margins of the mineralized zone, and massive sulfides at the flanks of the deposit onlap relatively unaltered, partially hematized basalts. The pipe-like dimensions of the stockwork zone do not exceed the diameter of the sulfide mound. Comparisons with samples collected during earlier dive series confirm that the vent complexes at the surface of the mound are not representative of the bulk composition of the deposit. Dramatic vertical zonation of metals within the mound suggests that a long history of hydrothermal reworking has effectively stripped the constituents that are soluble at lower temperatures from the massive sulfides and concentrated them at the top of the deposit through a process of zone refining.

In 1995 the Marine Minerals Technology Center (MMTC) of the University of Hawaii conducted a sidescan sonar survey and sampling expedition of the submarine geology and hydrothermal systems surrounding the active volcano White Island. The island is located in the Bay of Plenty, within the geothermally active Taupo Volcanic Zone off-shore of the North Island of New Zealand, and is the site of numerous shallow-water hydrothermal systems. The survey system, an EdgeTech DF1000 sonar, was a dual frequency 100 kHz & 500 kHz sonar capable of imaging the seafloor at better than 1 m resolution and possibly detecting gas bubbles within the water column. Sidescan imagery clearly shows sand channels, debris slumps, submarine landslides, and volcanic ridges all around the island to roughly 800 meters offshore. However, analyses of the both raw and processed acoustic data indicate that the sonar was not able to image any of the shallow-water hydrothermal gas seeps known to exist around the island. Vents were located using a commercial fish finder and knowledge from local tour guides and divers. Eleven gas samples from three different sites were collected by divers for analysis of chemical and isotopic composition. Rock samples were collected from thirteen underwater outcrops for correlation with existing data on subarial island flows sampled by previous investigators. Thin sections and XRF analysis were done for each rock to determine mineral assemblages along with major and trace elements, which were used to tie submarine samples to specific subarial stratigraphic layers.

Underwater intervention operations have been supported by robotic systems such as remotely operated vehicles (ROV) for a long time. In particular challenging scenarios such as the deep sea, the use of ROV systems for environment awareness is in fact the main tool of choice. With the technical advances in autonomous robotics, there is an increased effort in substitute ROVs whenever possible for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV). These systems don't have tether and thus provide large advantages from the operations and logistic point of view. However the limited options for underwater communications render them impracticable for many tasks were real time environment awareness and direct human control is needed. Emerging applications in underwater mining, both at sea [1] and in inland flooded mines [2] pose additional requirements in terms of operation support needs and environment restrictions. Two main tasks are to be addressed by assisting robots in these underwater mining operations: providing adequate environment awareness for human operators and obtain precise realtime 3D environment modelling (particularly relevant for the mining planning). The use of ROVs with umbilical cable, has in this case large limitations due to the nature of the mining cutting (performed by dedicated systems) that limit manoeuvrability and pose high risk of cutting the cable or damaging the vehicle. In this paper we present EVA (Exploration VAMOS AUV) an innovative hybrid ROV/AUV system developed for operations support in inland underwater mining operations. This robot is always operated without tether, and the can be used in a wireless ROV tele-operation mode using very short range high bandwidth underwater communication systems and in autonomous AUV mode.

Deep-sea mineral resources explored by Korea are categorized into mainly three types; manganese nodules, manganese crusts and seafloor massive sulfides. Manganese nodules have high Pt enrichment factors (EF=400, ore/crust ratios). Rare earth oxides (REO) contents from manganese nodules show from 0.037 to 0.302 REO% with mean value of 0.12%. Te and Pt are highly enriched in manganese crusts, displaying EFs of 10800 and 150, respectively. REO contents of manganese crusts are slightly richer than manganese nodules (0.013~0.387 REO%, average = 0.18 REO%). Seafloor massive sulfides deposits are featured by outstanding values of Se (EF=1300) well as In (EF=110). Au (0.8~26.3 g/t) and Ag (0.9~348.0 g/t) are another enrichment metals in SMS, although they belong to precious metals. Rare earth elements of SMS are meaningless as resources but REE are increasing in sediments overlying SMS. Heavy rare earth elements (HREE) from both manganese nodules and manganese crusts are typically higher than ones from land-based REE deposits. HREO grade and their portions of manganese nodules as well as manganese crusts are greatly similar to ion-absorbed type REE deposits in China, implying REE of subsea mineral resources are absorbed in nodules and crusts. Rare metals including REE could be exploited as by-production of commodities such like Ni, Co, Cu and so on. Rare metal resources from manganese nodules and manganese crusts are featured by low-grade and large scale deposits. Therefore rare metals in subsea mineral resources will add its economic values.

Submarine hydrothermal activity and mineralization related to island arc volcanism along the Tonga arc were explored during two research cruises in October 2009 (KODOS 09H) and February 2010 (KODOS 10H), respectively. In KODOS 09H cruise, geophysical survey, including multi-beam bathymetry, marine seismic and magnetic investigations, was performed on 10 volcanoes to find out possible structural discontinuity that can act as fluid pathway for formation of hydrothermal deposits at submarine caldera system. The result provided acoustic and seismic image maps and magnetic anomaly maps of targeted volcanoes. Then, detailed seafloor observation and sampling as well as deep tow side scan sonar survey were performed in KODOS 10H cruise on 5 volcanoes which are selected as targeted areas from the previous cruise. Among 5 targeted volcanoes, TA26 shows most extensive hydrothermal activity. Hydrothermal vents and alteration zone were observed on western caldera and summit of eastern cone of the TA26. Although only weak hydrothermal alteration was observed on eastern cone, mineralized fragments of chimney and mound were sampled from western wall of central caldera on TA25 volcano. On TA12 volcano, strong hydrothermal plume and alteration zone was detected during video tows operated between SW scoria cone and small ridge. However, only small amount of hydrothermal altered rocks were collected from TA12. Although hydrothermal activity and mineralization might be formed, supported by plume detection and result of geophysical survey, only weak alteration zones were observed on other two volcanoes (TA19 and TA22). The exploration area generally show shallow depth up to several tens of meters on summit where subsurface boiling of hydrothermal fluid might occur due to low hydraulic pressure, which can affect on styles of hydrothermal venting and mineralization process observed on Tonga submarine arc volcanoes.

Deep-sea mining is in the future perspective of mining industry and it is currently in the technological development phase. The focus of this study is on the electrical power system that provides sufficient energy for the mining equipment at the seafloor, excavating Seafloor Massive Sulfide (SMS) deposits. SMS deposits usually exist at water depths between 1500 m and 4000 m. Despite the similarities of SMS deposits excavation to the open-pit terrestrial mines, more energy is required to drill and crush the ores in the hyperbaric conditions [1], which can be done whether by static trench cutters [1] or by mobile mining crawlers [2]. In addition, the ores vertical transportation by subsea pumps requires several MW electrical power that can be supplied by all-electric subsea motors or hydraulically from water injection motors located on the surface. The power requirements can be fulfilled by an offshore or subsea power network. As the SMS mines are usually in remote locations, the straightforward solution will be an isolated offshore grid mounted on a vessel or platform similar to the most of offshore Oil & Gas projects. These power systems resemble the onshore microgrids for industrial purposes operating in island mode. However, in contrast with the onshore power networks, there are space and weight limitations in offshore infrastructures, which impose the design compactness to be a priority. In addition, having a very high reliability is necessary in the design approach of the offshore projects due to the extraordinary high expenses corresponding to repair and maintenance. The other design criterion is to improve the power system efficiency in order to reduce the size of the power equipment cooling apparatus, operational costs and CO2 emissions produced by diesel/LNG onboard generators. There are a few studies considering power system distribution for seafloor mining industry. Among them, [3] has investigated the AC and DC alternatives for SMS mining in 2400 m water depth by considering Solwara 1 project scenario introduced by Nautilus Minerals Inc. [2]. In this study, a power system design tool will be presented taking into account various water depth, power consumption levels, different distribution configurations (AC and DC) and the aforementioned design criteria.
