"LynnGold's MacLellan Mine is located about 8 km south east of Lynn Lake immediately to the east of the Keewatin River (Fig. I). The property is accessible by an all-weather road, leading north from the provincial highway 391, which links with the Town of Leaf Rapids and the City of Thompson to the south.The ore body, as outlined in the original feasibility study, is expected to produce in excess of 9.3 x IQ6 gm of gold and silver over the next 5 years. However, the deposit is open to depth and exploration is continuing on and around the main zone and the many satellite deposits.The start of construction of the MacLellan Mine and mill was scheduled to phase in with the closure of the Fox copper-zinc mine located 48 km west of Lynn Lake. The majority of the employees from the Fox Operation were either employed at the MacLellan Mine or relocated to Sherrin's Ruttan Operation.GeologyThe MacLellan gold ore deposit is located on the northern section of the Lynn Lake Greenstone Belt known as the Rainbow Trend. This Trend is a 40 km gold bearing rock sequence extending both east and west from the MacLellan Mine. The southern section of these two east-west trending structures is known as the Johnson Shear, this is also gold bearing."

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a medical technique that produces three dimensional images of the body, commonly to aid diagnosis and treatment of tumours. PET has been developed by the University of Birmingham in order to track particles in an opaque system which is known as Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT). The object to be tracked is irradiated. As the radionuclide decays positrons are produced; when these collide with electrons a pair of concurrent parallel back-to-back gamma waves are emitted and detected, from which the position of the object can be calculated. Stirred media mills are used for particle size reduction. The mill is usually operated at high solids loading with grinding media and has a polyurethane or polyurethane-lined steel pot and is thus opaque. For this study grinding media has been directly irradiated and tracked using the PET camera during the grind. The stirred media mill can be divided into cells of equal volume known as voxels. The fraction of the total time the irradiated media spend in each voxel can be shown in an occupancy diagram. The mean velocity and kinetic energy of the media for each voxel are calculated and also plotted. In occupancy and kinetic energy plots colour indicates the value of the voxel, in dimensionless time and Joules respectively. The arrow in velocity plots shows direction and length of arrow indicates magnitude of the mean velocity for the voxel. From these diagrams and further data analysis a detailed understanding of the flow patterns, media behaviour and high energy areas of the mill can be developed. Variables considered were the tip speed of the impeller and density of the grinding media. It was found that the grinder has three distinct regions: above, at and below the impeller with each region having its own flow patterns and velocity and kinetic energy profiles. These are different for each variable and so are used to characterise the grind. Tip speed and density of the grinding media were shown to both affect the velocity of the media and the proportion of time spent in the each region of the grinder.

"Since J978, Falconbridge Limited has operated two electric furnaces at its nickel-copper smelter in Sudbury. As part of its S02 Abatement Program, the smelter has undergone many changes over the last seven years.This paper describes the impact of these changes on the operation of the furnaces. Some of the topics to be covered include: the installation of sidewall copper coolers; current operating conditions; and furnace heat and mass balances. HistoricalFalconbridge began smelting ores in the Sudbury area in 1930. The original smelter consisted of a 1.3 m by 3 m blast furnace and two 4 m by 6 m converters. The blast furnace was supplied with untreated mine are and molten slag/matte was discharged into a round settler.In 1933 the smelter began treating flotation concentrates. The concentrates were mixed with fine magnetic ore and flue dust, then sintered on down-draught Dwight Lloyd machines. This provided an agglomerate suitable for furnace burden which was charged to the blast furnace while still hot.Between 1930 and 1954 nickel production was increased by lengthening the 3 m furnace to 4.6 m, then to 6 m, and later by constructing additional furnaces. By 1958, the plant consisted of one 7.5 m blast furnace, a settler, and three 4 m by 9 m converters."

Danieli entered into the Direct Reduction (DR) field in order to offer its clients complete turnkey facilities for steelmaking?from processing of raw materials through finished products. The Danarex® Process produces a passivated product, called the Supermetallic (SPM), without hot-briquetting. One of the main features of the Danarex® Process is its ability to produce approximately 50% of the Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) through reduction gas generated in a reformer and another 50% through recycling preheated furnace exit gas. Some other distinguishing features are: separation of carburising and cooling zones and the use of double bustle for better distribution of gas inside the shaft furnace. A pilot plant was set up at Hazen Research, Inc., Golden, CO in order to show that the integrated process works as expected and to obtain process data. The SPM obtained was of a very high quality, evidenced by metallization levels of 92% to 98%. The carbon content could be controlled between 1.5% to 4.0% by varying the operating conditions and approximately 75% of this carbon was present as Fe3C. The product was tested for inertness by Chilworth Technology, England, using UN standard tests and was found to be safe for outdoor storage and transportation.

The original JKMRC AG/SAG mill model was developed over 30 years ago and has been upgraded a number of times since then, with the current published version being the Variable Rates model that is now over 15 years old. Since this model was developed further enhancements have been derived, some of which are applied in-house and some which have yet to be incorporated. The published and the commercially available model in JKSimMet is currently undergoing a comprehensive overhaul with a vastly extended data base for model evolution and validation. Improvements developed within the AMIRA P9 project, in-house development and a number of collaborative projects, are being incorporated into the upgraded model structure. Enhanced capabilities will include: power-based breakage rates scaling; a far wider mill filling range (from 10% to 40%) that exhibits peak in throughput as mill filling increases; higher ball loads; improved pebble discharge function; improved slurry discharge function incorporating important mill design and operational influences; and the new size dependent breakage function. The model will also be able to accommodate some influence of liner design and multi-component ores (blends of hard and soft components). This upgrade is still a work in progress but substantial changes have been made to date. This paper presents some of the new improvements and their influence on the predictive capability of the model.

Al-Si-Cu and Al-Si-Mg alloys are widely used in several applications. Although they can be produced near-net-shapes, products made of these alloys very often require some machining. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the machinability of A319 and A356 under TO and T6 conditions. The machinability was assessed using during dry drilling machining process and the machinability indexes used are the chip form, the chip breakability and the cutting forces. It is found that 319 and 356 exhibit different machinability behaviors, especially in the T6-condition in terms of forces requirements, chip breakability and chip segmentation. It is also found that both the microstructure of the workpiece materials and the machining conditions significantly affect the chip formation mechanism, and therefore, the machining parameters could be selected to promote a chip form that is easily manageable in production.

"The information that has accumulated regarding the geology of the McIntyre mine is the result of work by several geologists and, as might be anticipated, their conclusions have varied. The writer has been at the mine only a few years and due to wartime conditions has not been able to study and review the mine's geology as thoroughly as his predecessors. Where the writer's conclusions differ from those of previous authors, it should be noted that he has been unable to re-map all the workings in which flow contacts are exposed, but has endeavoured to describe the structure as indicated by the evidence he has been able to observe. He wishes to thank H. G. Skavlem and H. S. Robinson for their constructive criticism of this paper, and McIntyre Porcupine Mines, Limited, for permission to present it. A list of references is appended.The McIntyre mine is in the central part of the Pearl Lake section of the Porcupine gold area. It includes the ""bed of Pearl lake, twenty-two claims to the north of the lake, and the Platt Vet lot to the southeast. It is bordered on the west by the Hollinger and on the east by the Coniaurum property. The chief ore-bearing veins on the upper levels lie very close to the north shore of the lake, but some occur under the lake, and others of lesser importance are found to the southeast. The most important veins are Nos. 3, 5, 7, 10, and 25. Some of the veins extend into the Hollinger. on the west and others cross the east boundary into the Coniaurum. The total production since the commencement of milling in 1912 to the end of March 1947 has been $168,448,218 in gold and silver from the milling of 17,690,963 tons of ore."

"Abstract - Traditionally, the emphasis in ore and reserve inventory has been to provide fairly simple definitions and presentations for reporting to shareholders and the investing public. The recent introduction of the mineral resource category aims to take into account the "part of the deposit that cannot yet be produced or extracted legally and profitably." Recent proposals still place insufficient emphasis on relating resource/reserve reporting definitions more closely to the needs of mining and exploration operators for the estimation and inventory of these basic material assets.In most schemes, significant ambiguities and shortcomings remain. These concern the potential economic interest of resources, the concept of continuity which is fundamental to the estimation of volumes, mass and grades, the objectives of the production feasibility study and the requirements of the geology, engineering and economic appraisals leading to it, and the "availability" of the permits required to start mine development. Up to now, no industry-wide formal consensus has yet been reached for any of these steps, nor for reconciliation between successive statements.A resource/reserve inventory scheme is presented here that is based on ISO 9000 principles and the Australasian system. Explicit criteria and transition points are proposed to define resource and reserve. Similarly, appropriate criteria are proposed to classify the three mineral resource and two ore reserve categories, based on geological and value continuity and on the objectives of the feasibility study. This scheme offers a way to develop ISO 9001 certification of resource/reserve estimation procedures for mining operations and supply exploration companies with an appropriate inventory system, to allow better information for the shareholders and the investing public.Résumé - L’objectif des inventaires des minerais et des réserves est, depuis le début du siècle, de fournir des définitions simples et d’ordre général visant les actionnaires et le public investisseur. L’introduction d’une catégorie de « ressources minérales » fournira un cadre tenant compte de la "portion d’un gisement qui ne peut encore être extraite ou exploitée légalement et à profit." Cependant, les propositions récentes de systèmes d’inventaires ne comportent pas des définitions des ressources et réserves qui tiennent compte suffisamment des besoins des opérateurs en exploitation et en exploration minière.La plupart des systèmes comportent des ambiguïtés et des carences. Citons la susceptibilité d’exploitation commerciale des ressources, la continuité qui est au centre de l’estimation des volumes, masses et teneurs, les objectifs de l’étude de la faisabilité de la mise en production, le niveau requis des travaux de géologie, d’ingénierie et d’économique qui y mènent, ainsi que la disponibilité des permis dont dépend la mise en production. Il n’y a jusqu’à maintenant aucun consensus dans l’industrie sur ces points, ni sur des procédures de réconciliation entre les estimations successives.Le système d’inventaire des ressources/réserves proposé ici s’appuie sur la structure ISO 9000 et le système australien. Des critères et des points tournants explicites sont établis pour définir les ressources et les réserves. De même, les définitions des trois catégories de ressources et deux catégories de réserves, s’apparent sur la continuité de la géologie et des teneurs et sur les objectifs de l’étude de la faisabilité. Cela implique fondamentalement de mettre l?accent sur le processus qui permettrait par la suite aux parties de mieux traiter les questions de contenu. Suivant cette hypothèse générale, l?initiative conjointe entre le Ministère des ressources naturelles du Québec et le CECI ?Développement des mécanismes de négociation entre communauté et entreprise minière? peut dégager, après un an et demi d?expérience pilote dans le site minier de Huanuni, département d?Oruro, Bolivie, les leçons préliminaires suivantes. Ce processus requiert: ??Agir, en tant qu?organisme consultant tierce partie, selon des principes et une méthodologie qui relèvent de la Communication publique et de la Médiation ; ??Comprendre et agir à partir de la ?réalité sociale? des parties en présence: l?entreprise minière, l?État et les différents groupes de la communauté; ??Intervenir sur les ?réalités sociales? des parties, par des actions d?éducation et de diffusion dans le but de préparer les personnes, les institutions et les organisations de la société civile, à des changements durables du modèle de communications existante; Approfondir la compréhension de la ?réalité sociale? du conflit (la culture du conflit, les méthodes populaires de résolution des problèmes et de gestion des conflits) afin d?offrire aux bénéficiaires les technologies appropriées pour la transformation de cette culture de confrontation violente en gestion constructive des conflits. Par ricochet, nous espérons ainsi faciliter l?attraction des investissements dans le secteur minier.

"Cable bolts are used frequently as a secondary support system (with steel arch support) in difficult stress-strain conditions of deep coal mines. The load transfer mechanism of cable bolts depends on several factors, such as the strength, deformation and geometric properties of the bolts, resin and the surrounding rock mass so-called cable-resin-rock system (CRR system). The bonding length and bolt/borehole diameter ratio strongly influence the final bearing capacity of the CRR system.The study presents the behaviour of CRR system during a pull-out test which is usually used in the carboniferous rock mass in the Czech part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. A series of 28 pull out tests were performed on 3-m-long cable bolts, with various combinations of borehole diameters and bonding lengths, to understand this behaviour. Boreholes were drilled into a solid rock mass consisting of fine-grained sandstone to guarantee similar conditions during the pull-out tests. Video inspection and measurement of borehole diameters were performed to determine their quality and real diameters. Three characteristics were observed from pull-out test results: ultimate pull-out load; displacement of the end of bolt and system stiffness. Numerical modelling by FEM (Finite Element Method) was used to determine the stiffness of the CRR system for variable bolt/borehole ratios and bonding lengths each under constant load. A linear elasto-plastic model and a mohr-coulomb model were used for cable and resin-rock respectively. The results of the experiment may contribute significantly to improving of the methodology of cable bolts installation as well as the design of used cable bolts."

A general expression for the electric power generated or consumed in a direct-current circuit is obtained by multiplying the reading of a suitable voltmeter connected across the terminals by the reading of an ammeter connected in the circuit. by the reading of an ammeter connected in the circuit. When alternating currents are considered, the product of the volts and amperes as obtained for direct currents does not generally represent the true energy involved; it is greater than this true energy and should be multiplied by a certain factor which may have any value between zero and unity, according to the conditions of the circuit. This factor is called the power-factor of the system, and expresses the ratio of the true energy over the apparent energy. For a three-phase system the expression of the apparent energy is [\/ 3 x E x I; ] while the expression of the true energy, that is, energy suitable for mechanical work, is [v? 3 x E x I x cos A.] The total current of a circuit corresponds to the reading of an ammeter connected in the circuit; it is the resultant of two currents. The first of these is in phase with the voltage, and is that portion which really produces mechanical work; the second is always in quadrature with the voltage, that is it may lead or lag the voltage by 90° according to the condition of the circuit. This second current does not produce any sensible work, and for this reason is sometimes called wattless current or reactive current.

"IntroductionTHE KNOWLEDGE about the mineral resources in a region ranges from relatively precise ore-reserve estimates for known deposits to probabilistic estimates concerning the speculative resources which may be discovered in future at greater depths and in the less-explored parts of the region. Previously developed probabilistic methods for regional resource evaluation (1) are based on the following two assumptions.(1) The probability that a specific block of rock, or part of a region close to the topographic surface, contains undiscovered deposits can be estimate d by weighting selected geological, geophysical or geochemical parameters for that block. The weights are computed by considering similar environments which are known to contain deposits.(2) Some of the characteristics of the undiscovered deposits, such as ore tonnages and average grades of metals contained in the ore, can be evaluated by considering probability distributions f or known deposit data. These methods were initially applied to Precambrian deposits in the Abitibi Volcanic Belt of the Canadian Shield (1).Since 1972, statistical methods for quantitative resource evaluation have been applied to the occurrences of the mainly Paleozoic base metal deposits in t he Canadian Appalachian Region. The objectives of this project (Project Appalachia) have been discussed by Leech (2) in a paper that introduces 8 papers with results of the exploratory data analysis. Project Appalachia represents an effort to develop and apply methods of combining information and concepts from regional geology, metallogeny and geomathematics for computer- aided regional mineral resource evaluation."

"Fluid inclusion studies from the Cinola deposit indicate low salinities and low C01 contents of the ore fluid. This supports a suggestion that the mineralizing fluids originated from pore water in the fluviatile host rock (mid-Miocene Skonun Formation). Bimodal distribution of filling temperatures suggests the existence of at least two temperature regimes centred on 160°C and 270°C during mineral deposition. Independent age and stratigraphic evidence indicates that depth of mineralization is between 1.1 and 1. 8 km, corresponding to a hydrostatic load of between 110 and 170 bars.RESUMELes donnees sur les inclusions fluides du gisement Cinola indiquent de basses salinites et basses teneurs en C01 . Numerous studies have shown the potential of air rate profiling to significantly improve the flotation performance of a bank of cells. To date many profiles have been implemented; balanced, increasing, decreasing and combinations of these. Previous work has typically shown using an increasing air rate profile, where the air rates are increased proportionally to each cell down the bank, yields a higher grade for a given recovery compared to other profiles. Air rate profiling can then be thought of as having two distinct components; determining the correct distribution of a given volume of air and, perhaps more importantly determining the correct total volume of air to add to the bank. To date no method for this second component has been established. In an alternative technique the air rate to each cell is adjusted in order to optimise the air recovery from that cell. Air recovery is the fraction of the inlet air which overflows the weir of a cell as unburst bubbles. The peak in air recovery (PAR) is a robust measurement that indicates optimal performance for the operating conditions in the cell, and sets the PAR air rate. By doing this for each cell in the bank, the optimal total air rate to the bank and the optimal distribution of that air can be simultaneously determined. In this study plant trials evaluated different air rate profiles, and profiling based on PAR. The total air rates to the bank for all profiles tested were approximately equal, allowing direct comparison. The results showed that the highest cumulative mineral recovery was achieved by operating at air rates which gave the PAR for each cell down the bank. Different distributions of the same total air rate to the bank gave the same cumulative upgrade ratio, but lower cumulative recoveries. In this study, the increase in cumulative mineral recovery, at the same upgrade ratio, was more than 33%. Peak in air recovery (PAR) based optimisation of air rates to banks of cells and to the individual cells has been shown to significantly improve flotation performance as it simultaneously determines the optimal air rate to the bank, and the optimal distribution of that air.

A phenomenological model is presented for leaching silver from silver sulfide contained in mineral particles with ammoniacal thiosulfate solutions of copper in stirred reactors. Experimental results were used to adjust the kinetic parameters of the model, such as the reaction order and velocity. The incorporation of the cuprous sulfide-silver sulfide equilibrium at the reaction interface allowed the prediction of the conversion limits for different reagent concentrations. The information obtained from the reactor model was later integrated into a heap leaching simulation, whose results adequately describe tendencies observed in column tests, with respect to variations in copper and thiosulfate concentrations. MR. F. E. LATHE: In studying any subject whatever, one should at least occasionally stand back from the canvas, as it were, and take a broad view of the picture. It is such a view of the subject of industrial minerals that Dr. Wilson has given us today, and, in consideration of our efforts to utilize Canada's resources to the utmost in the present emergency, it seems most timely. I shall confine my remarks on the subject to the resources of the atmosphere and hydrosphere. We seldom stop to realize our dependence upon the atmosphere, not merely as a source of the oxygen we breathe but also of other indispensable elements. As recently as the beginning of the present century, grave concern was felt lest the rapidly increasing population of the world should ultimately starve for lack of the nitrogen required for crop growth. I recently noticed a reference to the Scientific American for March, 1890-just fifty years ago-in which an account is given of work on the fixation of nitrogen, which, said the article, "leads to the conclusion that while cyanides and ammonia may be thus produced experimentally, there are as yet insuperable difficulties in the way of adapting those methods to industrial purposes". Y et, in the early part of the present century, the development of the arc, cyanamide, and synthetic ammonia processes of nitrogen fixation was such as to remove, for all time to come the possibility of a shortage of nitrogen. Today, the atmosphere is by far our greatest source of nitrogen, and the capacity of the nitrogen fixation plants of the world is at least 4,000,000 tons annually-much more than can at present be utilized. Pure oxygen or oxygen-enriched air offers great possibilities in metallurgy and industrial chemistry, but, so far, little application has been made. In a paper presented to the Institute in 1926, 1 pointed out the theoretical savings which could be effected by the use of oxygen in burning carbon-when the gases pass off at 2,460°F., the fuel saving is no less than 50 percent. The use of oxygen on a commercial scale is intimately tied up with the question of refractories, but we should not forget that the possible changes in metallurgical practice by the use of oxygen are truly of revolutionary character.

The HBMS reverb furnace in Flin Flon was originally designed in the late 1920s. Throughout the decades campaign life has been increased due to operational practices, technological changes and brick quality improvements. In recent decades the campaign life had been extended such that a complete rebuild was scheduled every 3 years. The latest furnace rebuild and start up has been after a campaign life of nearly 6 years. Brick construction methods and techniques along with furnace operational practices allow the present campaign to be double that of the historical campaign length.

"The structural relations of the ore deposits of the Staclacona mine are of considerable interest, for they not only illustrate the effect of a change in competence of the wall-rock, but also the effect of either the convergence together of two faults, or a change in the clip of a fault, or both of these factors, on ore deposition.The mine is in claim M.L. 1818 near the eastern end of Pelletier lake and lies about 2 miles south of the town of Rouyn. The Company was organized in 1926 to explore claims in Rouyn, Dufresnoy, and Beauchastel townships, but attention was directed mainly to those in Rouyn. Underground work began in 1928 with the sinking of the main shaft to a depth of 300 feet. Except for 1930 and 1931, the mine has been in operation continuously since that time. Production, which began in 1936, up to the end of 1946 has amounted to 1,381,422 tons of ore from which gold and silver having a total value of $7,861,860 were recovered. The average grade of the ore milled in 1946 was $6.68.GEOLOGYThe rocks in which the Stadacona ore deposits occur are mainly volcanics of the (Keewatin) Abitibi series intruded here and there by numerous dykes, sills, or masses of diorite. Single dykes of olivine diabase and lamprophyre are also present in the property and are intersected in the mine workings. The volcanic rocks are part of a wide belt of northward dipping lavas and pyroclastic rocks, having a thickness of over 16,000 feet, that extend from the east-west trending belt of Timiskaming sediments on the south northward to the Horne Creek fault and form the south limb of a large syncline. The volcanic rocks within the property consist of numerous, east-west trending, northward dipping flows of andesite and a few flows of rhyolite interbedded with rhyolite ruff and agglomerate. The angle of dip throughout most of the property is 60° to 80°N., but in the main cross-cut on the 850- and 975-foot levels stratification in rhyolite tuff was noted dipping 35°N. The tuff at this point lies above an intrusive mass of diorite and it is probable that the change in dip results from the way in which the tuff and agglomerate have been thrust aside by the intrusive."

Considerable mechanical property decline is always observed at the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) of AA 5083, This occurred as a result of the thermal effect on the hardened material, It is highly beneficial to have a prospective metallurgical procedure to overcome this decline of properties. Therefore, experiments were set to evaluate the effectiveness of a quick post weld heat treatment process with the AA 5083, Optimum results were obtained at 473K and with approximately 600 seconds time, The interplay between the time, temperature and mechanical properties are possible to explain by the Lifshitz-Slyozov-Wagner (LSW) theory and by considering the composition of the material.
