In SAG mills fed with a variety of ore types, hard packing between the shell lifters can come and go depending on rock type and rock size distribution and the presence of a binder. Packing can appear in all sizes of SAG mills, and can be tenacious. High ball impact forces (depending on ball size) in larger mills may compact and encourage packing. Packing can have a negative impact on milling performance and a change in shell liner design may be required to remove it. However shell liner design changes need to be managed with care to ensure liner reliability. In smaller mills control of packing can extend shell plate wear-life and may help to maintain milling performance in fixed-speed mills through the liner wear-cycle.

"Fractures and fracture zones containing veins and stringers of auriferous quartz in a quartz porphyry dyke are the principal structural features at the Howey and Hasaga gold mines. The 'break' containing the dyke was produced by a force from the northwest, the fractures in the dyke by compressive stress from the west.Both mines are in the north-central part of Heyson township, in the Red Lake area. They lie close to the southeastern side of the Dome granite stock. The Howey mine exhausted its ore reserves and ceased operations in November 1941. The Hasaga mine is producing at the present time (June, 1946).Mineralization was first discovered in the dyke in 1925 by the Howey brothers. Lorne Howey's discovery, which became the Howey mine, came into production in April, 1930; Ray Howey's find, which is now the Hasaga mine, started production in November, 1938.The total production from the Howey mine was 421,324 oz. gold and 144,253 oz. silver from 5,158,376 tons of ore hoisted ( 4,319,331 tons milled) during its 11 years of operation.The total production from the Hasaga mine from November, 1938, to December 31, 1945, was 124,434 oz. gold and 51,009 oz. silver from a total of 901,098 tons hoisted (721,361 tons milled).GENERAL GEOLOGYThe porphyry dyke containing the orebodies at the Howey and Hasaga mines lies a short distance southeast of the contact of a granite-granodiorite mass known as the Dome stock. The dyke fills a fracture trending N.65°E. in a tongue of Keewatin volcanic breccia that extends in a rather irregular manner into an elongate intrusive stock of dioritic rock known as the Howey diorite. This paper describes a generic technology for modeling in real time the various operations of surface mines. Based on various sensor fusion techniques and high-speed network, a virtual reality model of a mine capable of representing not only static infrastructures but also mobile equipment such as trucks and excavators is created. The modeling technique deal with a wide range of sensors such as survey data, satellite pictures, ore concentration, machine condition indicators, video, sound, real-time GPS locator, range sensor, etc. The model created allows for every piece of information to be displayed in context allowing for a better temporal and spatial correlation of events by mine operators, planners, and supervisors. Syncrude, a Canadian mining company located in northern Alberta, is planning to use this technology, not only to understand oil sands mining processes better, but also to give decision-makers better access to the timely, accurate information from the field that they need to make informed decisions.

The hardening behaviour and microstructure evolution of Cu-30Ni-30Mn alloys aged at 350 °C has been investigated utilizing optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscopy and Vickers hardness tester. The results show that the discontinuous precipitation of NiMn phase results in a remarkably hardening effect in Cu-30Ni-30Mn alloy during aging at 350 °C. The maximum hardness (~494HV) is attained in the sample after aged for 48 h. The NiMn precipitates are ordered and have a face-centered tetragonal structure. The coherent orientation relationship between the NiMn precipitates and Cu matrix is (220)Matrix // (220)P, [1-1-2]Matrix // [1-1-2]P. In addition, there is a linear relationship between hardness and volume fraction of the discontinuous precipitation, which indicates that the hardness increment of Cu-Ni-Mn alloys aged at 350 °C is attributed to the microstructure characteristics of discontinuous precipitation. The high strength of discontinuous precipitation colony is caused by the formation of nanoscale NiMn precipitates with a lamellar structure in discontinuous precipitation. INTRODUCTION Cu-Ni-Mn alloys are attractive candidates for oil drilling, aerospace and energy applications due to their high elasticity, high strength and excellent corrosion resistance (Sun et al., 2009; Liu, Yang, Xia, Jiang, & Gui, 2016). The high strength of the Cu-Ni-Mn alloys is mainly attributed to the precipitation of NiMn phase (Shapiro, Tyler, & Lanam, 1974; Xie et al., 2015). The uniformly dispersed nanoprecipitates formed by continuous precipitation can impede dislocation movement, and thereby lead to a significant improvement in strength of traditional precipitation-strengthened alloys. However, it is reported that there are two precipitation types observed in Cu-Ni-Mn alloys, namely, continuous precipitation and discontinuous precipitation (Shapiro et al., 1974). The discontinuous cellular colony with a lamellar structure nucleates at grain boundaries, and progressively grows inward the grain on the process of discontinuous precipitation (Ng, Bettles, & Muddle, 2011). It is found that the discontinuous precipitation can occur in many Cu-based alloys, such as Cu-Ni- Mn alloy (Shapiro et al., 1974), Cu-Be alloy (Monzen, Hasegawa, & Watanabe, 2010) and Cu-Ni-Sn alloy (Zhao, & Notis, 1998). Many studies consider that the discontinuous precipitation results in a detrimental effect on hardness and strength, and the discontinuous precipitation occurring during aging treatment should be suppressed (Markandeya, Nagarjuna, & Sarma, 2004; Semboshi, Sato, Iwase, & Takasugi, 2016). The mechanical properties can also be improved by discontinuous precipitation in AZ91 magnesium alloy (Tamura, Kida, Suzuki, & Soda, 2009) and AM30 magnesium alloy (Saikawa et al., 2012). Jun (2017) found that the reduced interlamellar spacing of precipitate fibers in discontinuous cellular colony leads to a significant increase in hardness. Indeed, the strengthening contribution of discontinuous precipitation is similar to that of continuous precipitation in Cu-20Ni-20Mn alloy. Discontinuous precipitation of NiMn phase can provide a significant strengthening effect in Cu-Ni-Mn alloys.

"SummaryDetermination of uranium in ores may be made by measurement of their radioactivity.The method most commonly used is that of measuring beta radiations with the tray-type beta counter. This will give an accurate uranium determination provided the sample does not contain thurium and that the beta and gamma activities have not been disturbed from their natural state of equilibrium. Such a loss of equilibrium will result from mining the ore or from the weathering of the surface rock.A method is described which eliminates errors due to loss of equilibrium. The beta and gamma activities are measured simultaneously in one simple operation. This method is recommended for assaying samples of products from milling operations and its use is limited only by the presence of thorium in a ratio greater than one part of thorium to twenty parts of uranium.A third method is recommended for the analysis of exploration samples and diamond drill cores, which may be assayed in the uncrushed state.Rapid determinations of a large number of samples is possible with the pressure ionization chamber, which is sensitive to gamma activity."

"The mineralogy of samples from the Wellgreen Cu-Ni-Pt-Pd deposit, Yukon Territory, is complex and the metals of interest are contained within fine-grained minerals which vary in size and mineral associations from sample to sample.The major Ni carriers are pentlandite and violarite; the major Cu carrier is chalcopyrite. About 700/0 of the major Ni carriers and 78% of the major Cu qurier will be liberated at a grind of 80% -U,.7 ,an (-500 mesh) for typical low-grade gabbro (West zone, sample No.1). For typical ""clinopyroxenite"" (West zone, sample No.2) and typical ""clinopyroxene-rich peridotite"" (East zone, sample No.3) the liberation would be 71% and 65% for Ni, 74% and 60% for Cu, respectively. Fine grinding, however, cannot liberate the Ni contained in silicates and pyrrhotite, estimated to total 24.5% for typical low-grade gabbro (West zone, sample No. I), 15% for typical ""clinopyroxenite"" (West zone, sample No.2), and 12% for typical ""clinopyroxene-rich peridotite"" (East zone, sample No.3).The principal Pt carrier (sperrylite) varies considerably in grain-size between samples and fine grinding, required to liberate the major Ni and Cu carriers, may be counterproductive in samples where sperrylite is relatively coarse-grained, as some would then be unrecovered (e.g. sample No. 1). In addition, sperrylite in samples No.2 and No.3 is closely associated with magnetite. Palladium occurs in diverse ways. It occurs in the form of several Pd minerals (e.g. sudburyite, testibiopalladite, merenskyite), as a replacement for Ni in several tellurides, antimonides and tellurantimonides (e.g. melonite), or as very low concentrations in pentlandite (up to 34 ppm), chalcopyrite (up to 9 ppm), and pyrrhotite (up to 5.6 ppm). Palladium minerals and Pd-bearing minerals are strongly associated with chalcopyrite in sample No. 1 and will thus report to a Cu concentrate.However, 22% of the total Pd is in solid solution in pentlandite in this sample and will thus report to the Ni concentrate. In samples No.2 and No.3, less Pd occurs in solid solution in pentlandite, and the PGM are distributed mainly among pentlandite, chalcopyrite, and magnetite in sample No. 2, and among pentlandite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and magnetite in sample No.3. Therefore, the feasibility of magnetic concentration should be investigated for samples like No. 2 and No.3, in order to improve Pt and Pd recoveries. Rhodium was found to occur as rare hollingworthite, in sparse cobaltite (up to 2.7%) and, as low concentrations in chalcopyrite (to 10 ppm) and pentlandite (to 12 ppm) by proton microprobe. Iridium occurs in hollingworthite (up to 7.8%) and very rarely as the native metal or in an undefined Re-Ir-Qs..Ru alloy. Ruthenium was determined by proton microprobe analyses to occur in pentlandite (up to 13 ppm) and chalcopyrite (up to 10 ppm), in addition to rare laurite and Re alloy."

"IntroductionTHE ORES treated at the concentrator of the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, Britannia Beach, B.C., have always contained some lead, but it was not until 1950 that the combination of lead headings and lead price was such that recovery of this metal at Britannia became worthwhile. In that year, with the mining of a new orebody, the lead in the mill feed was raised from 0.07 per cent to 0.15 per cent. Chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and pyrite concentrates are produced by flotation at Britannia, •and 95 per cent of the lead in the mill feed reports with the chalcopyrite concentrate, so that the rise in lead headings was reflected almost wholly in the lead content of the copper concentrate. In 1950, investigation was started to determine if some of this lead could be recovered economically."

"The Delnite mine is in the northwest part of Deloro township, Cochrane district. The property consists of 307 acres on the so-called 'South Break' in the Porcupine camp. The Company was formed in 1934 to take over the holdings of La Roche Mines, Limited. Gold has been produced continuously since June 1, 1937. The value of the gold recovered to date (December 31, 1946) has been $7,456,000, and the average grade of ore $6.81 a con.The ore at the Delnite occurs in relatively narrow, persistent, quartz-ankerite veins, which generally contain tourmaline and have a ladder-like structure. The gold occurs in the free state, and in association with pyrite and arsenopyrite, the two chief sulphides. The host rock is fine-grained, highly carbonatized andesite of Keewatin age."

The world is poised for rapid growth in consumption as large, less developed economies acquire greater wealth. It might be expected that there would be a corresponding growth in waste generation, but this might not necessarily be the case. The metallurgical industry has an excellent record of process development which has allowed it to provide a high tonnage supply of low cost, high quality metals. Environmental challenges have been faced and indeed the recycling of scrap iron through the electric arc furnace has made a massive contribution to cleaning up obsolete structures and equipment of past generations. Issues in waste generation and processing still remain, and the expectation for cleaner processing and environmental performance continues to rise. The waste impact of key process developments of the last century and the recent developments in metallurgical waste processing in Canada will be outlined. The potential to use state of the art design tools to produce the next generation of zero waste processes will then be explored.

The Altair process digests ilmenite concentrate in high-chloride HC1 solution, with complete dissolution of titanium and iron. The Fe(III) ions are reduced to the ferrous form, and the solution is cooled to produce crystalline ferrous chloride. Titanium is transferred by solvent extraction into a purified, concentrated Ti stream, which is spray-hydrolyzed to produce TiO2 hydrate. The hydrate is further calcined with additives to generate a high-quality pigment. All the chloride streams are recycled. In the original flowsheet, the iron chloride is pyrohydrolyzed by spray roasting to regenerate 18% HCl, which is subsequently converted to HC1 gas and water by pressure-swing distillation. A modified flowsheet includes an alternative to iron chloride spray roasting, producing more concentrated HCl and decreasing the amount of solution to be distilled. Improvements in digestion, solvent extraction and final pigment production are also introduced. A 100 t/y pilot plant is being built and will test the new concepts and confirm the overall water, acid and impurity balances of the process.

"Rare earth (RE) elements are essential components of emerging green technologies. The increase in demand for these applications have driven the search and development of new rare earth deposits such as the Niobec project in Quebec, Canada. This deposit consists primarily of dolomite with significant amount of RE minerals bastnäsite and monazite, the primary sources of RE elements. Due to the minerals’ fine liberation sizes, flotation is commonly used as a concentration method. To develop an efficient process, the electrokinetic properties of the minerals must be understood. In this study, the surface properties of bastnäsite, monazite (RE minerals) and dolomite (a common gangue mineral) were investigated by zeta potential measurements. These measurements are affected by various ions present in solution; for bastnäsite, monazite and dolomite, some of these ions are H+, OH-, PO43- and CO32-. Dolomite, being a sparingly soluble mineral and a primary component of the ore, may be the greatest contributor of these ions in solution in the form of CO32- ions. Thus, different sources of CO32- ions (from dolomite dissolution and from Na2CO3) were investigated. The research work aims at elucidating how these reagents may influence the minerals’ surfaces. The results have shown that dolomite supernatant and sodium carbonate greatly affect the electrokinetic properties of each minerals. The addition of dolomite supernatant have resulted to relatively similar zeta potential of the minerals; while, sodium carbonate have affected them differently. These observations could be useful in efficient flotation of bastnäsite and/or monazite from bastnäsite-monazite-dolomite system.INTRODUCTIONThe increase in the demand for rare earth (RE) elements has driven the search and development of new deposits. Out of 53 rare earth projects in the world, 19 can be found in Canada (Hatch, 2015). These include the Niobec project of Magris Resources Company in Quebec. This deposit contains a significant amount of rare earth minerals (such as bastnäsite and monazite), with carbonates (such as dolomite) as the primary gangue minerals."

This paper will address methods to manage hydraulic hose and coupling inventory so that parts will be available to build assemblies for the vast majority of equipment with as little inventory as possible. Topics also to be covered will include some basic hose assembly tagging techniques that will help keep equipment running by tracking problem hoses and building ?band aid? kits, having problem hoses premade in stock, and inventory usage tracking (one of the biggest problems for any inventory manager is knowing which couplings have been used so they can re-order). Cradle to grave tracking of hydraulic and industrial hoses insures reliable service of vehicles and ethical disposal of old hoses and couplings. With accountability for disposal of hose products that may contain chlorine (neoprene tube material in some hydraulic hoses) and carbon black that will be scrutinized more closely in the future, a proactive approach should be adopted in order to minimize maintenance facility problems.

"The Madsen mine is in the southeastern part of Baird township, in Red Lake area, Ontario. It lies about 6 miles southwest of the town of Red Lake, with which it is connected by an all-weather road.The Madsen Red Lake Gold Mines Company was formed in March, 1935, to take over the holdings of the Falcon Gold and Jomac Gold syndicates. During 1935 an4 the early part of 1936 No. 1 shaft was sunk and drifts driven on four levels, all on a narrow quartz vein in a granite dyke.In July, 1936, the Austin zone was discovered about half a mile north of No. 1 shaft by Austin McVeigh, a prospector employed by the Company. Diamond drilling showed that the zone included an orebody worth development, and in 1937 No. 2 shaft was sunk, three levels opened up and sufficient ore outlined to justify the installation of a mill. Milling commenced in August, 1938, at the rate of 300 tons a day, which was later increased to 400 tons a day.The total production from 1938 to 1946 was 1,116,307 tons from which gold and silver having a value of $9,949,010 were recovered. The gold produced ranged from a minimum of 0.1910 oz. a ton in 1939 to a maximum of 0.2827 oz. in 1944. The average grade in 1946 was 0.2345 oz. to the ton."

"In the present study, the reduction behavior of composite pellets comprising of iron oxide, synthetic graphite and slags were investigated in a laboratory-scale horizontal tube furnace. Two different types of slags indicating silicate base and aluminate base slags were chosen to examine the effect of slag chemistry on the reduction behavior of pellets. Slag composition of binding materials has influences on the reactions occurring in composite pellets during direct reduction. In-situ high temperature visualization approach was used to observe the slag / iron / carbon interactions at 1773K (1500°C). The off-gases were measured by means of infrared analyzer to determine the reaction rates of the pellets. Different physical appearances during the in situ reaction inferred a strong correlation between the slag composition and internal reactions. In addition, compression tests were conducted to examine physical strength of the pellets. This investigation was carried out to establish feasibility of physical property control of pellets by selecting optimum slag compositions of binding materials INTRODUCTIONCurrently, most of the iron ore mines have facilities that make an ore more usable for the blast furnace operation by improving its physical properties (e.g. pelletizing and sintering). However, during the process, a large amount of fuel is supplied to indurate materials which consequently deteriorate energy efficiency and produce more CO2 emission. Along with increased interests, direct reduced iron (DRI) making process; simply without coke oven or sintering process, has opened the era of clean and environmental friendly iron making process. While some of the established DRI technologies such as Midrex and HYL were restricted to certain locations where natural gas is abundant, coal based technologies using Rotary Hearth Furnace (RHF) such as FASMET and ITmk3 have been developed with regardless of expensive fuel deposit. In addition to the direct use of pulverized non coking coal and fine iron ore, RHF process also has advantages of utilizing waste materials such as EAF dust, biomass and recycled plastics. Nevertheless, there are still many challenges in the coal utilizing technologies as the unprocessed coal and the waste materials contain huge volatiles and ashes. Although recent investigations on volatiles in a RHF process (Sohn and Fruehan, 2005, 2006) have indicated the benefits of coal in terms of iron oxide reduction and have shown feasibility of multi-layer process, carbon composite pellets still have disadvantages because of its weak mechanical bonding strength. As the mixed system with carbon and oxides generates intermediate gases (e.g. CO and CO2) between solid particles, it is difficult to keep its physical state without the help of binding materials. In this reason, industries have been tried to use various binding materials such as bentonite, kaolinite and Portland cement. However, they are still struggling to find out new materials that provide not only sufficient mechanical strength but also metallurgical properties, such as porosity, reducibility and swelling throughout the reduction reaction. Recently, Canadian researchers (Aota et al, 2006) observed enhanced mechanical strength of pellets by using high alumina cement as a binder and concluded that the method could be used to recycle EAF dust as well, but in depth mechanism of reinforced strength has not been concerned. Most of the ashes coming from binders formulate certain type of slag during the reduction process due to its incombustibility. Thus, observation and regulation of slag property is an essential for the control of carbon composite pellet. Yet, only a little thermodynamic consideration from the perspective of slag chemistry has been adapted in the iron and steel making industries as ash has been easily ignored for its tiny proportion. "The property is about 120 miles north of Red Lake in the Favourable Lake area, district of Kenora ( Patricia part) , Ontario. The original discovery was staked by K. Murray in December, 1927. The first development work was done by the Favourable Lake Mining and Exploration Company. In 1936 Newmont Mining Corporation acquired control of the property and developed it to production by September, 1939. Production to the end of 1945 had a value of $7,534,656 from 441,457 tons of ore, an average value of $17.04 a ton . This production was mainly from gold and silver, with lead and zinc of subordinate importance.The rocks in the vicinity of the mine trend in a north-south direction. From east to west the sequence is: (1) A dark-coloured, massive rock, presumably a flow, composed mainly of quartz and biotite. ( 2) A buff- coloured, scricitized rock locally containing quartz phenocrysts and black hornblende. This is an alteration product of the dark variety and is later than the folding. It occurs mainly within the dark rock. (3) A series of sediments comprising thin beds of greywacke, grit, quartzite, conglomerate, and iron formation. ( 4) A gabbro sill, now largely altered to amphibolite.With the exception of the buff type, these rocks dip 80°E. The buff rock has a very irregular outline in comparison with the other rocks and appears to dip somewhat more flatly east. Felsite and diorite dykes are also present. These have a general strike of S.60°E. and dip 65°S .W. A post-ore diorite dyke trending N.15°E. occurs about 2,000 feet east of the mine area."

Today, systems and machinery usually are designed to meet only one specific customer?s requirements. One reason for this is that underground automation and smart functions are often developed tightly together with a customer. This is natural, since risk and cost can be shared between the customer and the supplier. Nevertheless, when the automation product develops and the market increase this will cause problems: The highly specialized products will not fulfill the next customer?s demands. In order to cope with this problem, Atlas Copco works towards a common platform. Instead of designing solutions for specific customers, we will lift the abstraction and focus on standardized modules. These modules, or function blocks, can then be combined in a large variety of configurations. The benefits of combining modules into products are, for example: increased flexibility when options are available for many machines; easier commissioning and maintenance since less different spare parts and tools are needed; and easier operation since the user interfaces have a similar look and feel. This paper will present the ongoing work towards standardized modules. We will discuss how our Rig Control System (RCS) allows for modular design at Atlas Copco. RCS has number of standardized modules that are used in different surface and underground mining and tunneling equipment. These modules are also used for optional products such as, drilling, radio-remote control, and telematics systems.

This document presents estimates of future "total cash cost per ounce" and "minesite cost per tonne" that are not recognized measures under United States generally accepted accounting principles ("US GAAP"). This data may not be comparable to data presented by other gold producers. These future estimates are based upon the total cash costs per ounce and minesite costs per tonne that the Company expects to incur to mine gold at the applicable projects and do not include production costs attributableto accretion expense and other asset retirement costs, which will vary over time as each project is developed and mined. It is therefore not practicable to reconcile these forward-looking non-GAAP financial measures to the most comparable GAAP measure. A reconciliation of the Company's total cash cost per ounce and minesite cost per tonne to the most comparable financial measures calculated and presented in accordance with US GAAP for the Company's historical results of operations is set forth in the notesto the financial statements included in the Company's Annual Information Form and Annual Report on Form 20-F, for the year ended December 31, 2009, as well as the Company's other filings with the Canadian Securities Administrators and the SEC.

"The Renard Mine, 100% owned by Stornoway Diamonds, is located approximately 250 km north of the Cree community of Mistissini and 350 km north of Chibougamau in the James Bay region of north-central Québec. The project benefits from a large and growing resource, good mining conditions, strong social acceptance, a modest environmental footprint, and the development of direct-to-mine road infrastructure. Construction began on July 10, 2014; following the completion of a 946 million CAD project financing transaction. Now completed, the mine is the first diamond mine in Québec, and one of only six in Canada, employing approximately 500 people. First ore was delivered to the plant approximately 5 months ahead of schedule on July 15, 2016. Commercial production was declared on January 1, 2017. In general, the project ramp up has been characteristic of a type 1 McNulty curve. One of the challenges during production ramp-up was a redesign of processed kimberlite dewatering (replacing the dewatering centrifuge with two stages of hydrocyclones and a dewatering screen). A processing opportunity captured by Stornoway was the design and installation of an ore sorting facility which rejected free waste rock from the valuable host rock; kimberlite. Through tackling both challenges and opportunities, Stornoway has realised and is now exceeding their original design tonnage.PROJECT DESCRIPTION Stornoway Diamond Corporation (Stornoway) was established in 2003 resulting from to a plan of arrangement between Northern Empire Minerals Ltd. and Stornoway Ventures. In 2011, Stornoway acquired 100% interest of the Renard Mine. The construction of the Renard Mine began in 2014 and achieved full production in 2017 [1, 2]."
