One aim of testwork and flowsheet development is to ultimately provide a reliable and flexible plant that is simple to operate and maintain. Testwork can indicate amenability of ores to CIP treatment and provide a basis for process design and economic appraisal. Batch cyanidation and CIP tests are often sufficient for small projects. Continuous multistage test rigs can be operated to simulate plant operation and to provide data for flowsheet optimisation. Operating requirements, gold recoveries and potential problem areas can be anticipated at an early stage with more confidence. Subsequent project development involving decisions on the basic flowsheet, equipment types and general plant arrangements are based on practical considerations and experience. Computer aided process modeling and economic appraisal can be useful in analysing various tradeoffs, firming up the flowsheet and equipment sizes, and in specifying operating targets for the future CIP plant. INTRODUCTION Carbon-in-pulp (CIP) technology which has developed rapidly since 1974 is now accepted as an economically and technically viable process for the efficient recovery of gold. This paper describes testwork and flowsheet development procedures used for CIP evaluation and design.

In Australia and New Zealand, the 'Australasian Code for Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves', which was released by industry in 1989, is operating successfully in a co-operative approach between industry and regulatory authorities. Similar codes or guidelines exist or are under development in the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom and South Africa, although the regulatory backing given to the Australasian Code is unique. International standard definitions for Mineral Resources and Reserves, and for categories of Resources and Reserves, have been under development by the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions since 1994 and have already stimulated considerable convergence of definitions and reporting standards in participating countries. It is hoped that agreement on this international standard for public reporting by mining companies will be reached within the next two years, and it is expected that adoption of the standard will result in a higher and more uniform quality of reporting worldwide, with a consequently greater interest on the part of the general public and financiers in investing in the mining industry.

The 6000m long King Headrace Tunnel will be driven through hard Owen Conglomerate in the Eastern third and feldspar porphyry in the Western two thirds, with the anticipated hardness up to 350MPa unconfined compressive strength. Since the Commission had not driven a long, large diameter tunnel for some twenty years, major research was undertaken to assess the current tunnelling trends. Tunnel boring machines were compared with drill and fire equipment. Rail equipment was compared with rubber tyred equipment. Tenders were called with tenderers invited to submit alternatives if desired. Commissioning and production excavation using the equipment is discussed with the final conclusion being that the individual items of equipment purchased combined to make an efficient hard rock drill and blast system capable of progressing through all rock conditions likely to be encountered on the King and Anthony Schemes.

Technological advances evolve in different ways; many are the result of years of application of scientific method. i.e. Observation Deduction Hypothesis Proof In the mining industry, better explosives, drill bits or reagents are likely to evolve in this way. The scientific method is suited to the application of conventional management structures. Other advances are simply the result of a "brainstorm", or building a better mousetrap. Such inspiration probably resulted in "Split Set" rock bolts, or the first use of a vacuum cleaner principle for shaft mucking. Individual consultants can apply lateral thinking to generate such inspiration. In gathering material for the presentation of this paper, I sent a.letter to all members of the Mineral Industry Consultants Association asking them to nominate problems in the industry requiring investigation. The answers have been divided into two classifications - contract research underway and identified problems requiring solutions.

Feasibility studies in the development of mining projects are fundamental to most investment decisions. It is important that the issues addressed and the degree of detail involved in feasibility studies are consistent with the investment decisions to be taken. Emphasis should be placed on a thorough analysis of critical project parameters prior to detailed investigations being undertaken into other activities which are not relevant to the decisions at hand. Therefore, the issues to be decided upon should be influenced significantly by the stage of development of the project and by the reliability of technical and financial information used in the study. Some of the more critical parameters of feasibility studies are commodity prices, inflation rates and discount rates. Advice is given on the selection of these inputs and also on their application in the feasibility study as the project progresses through its various development stages. The weathering of different types of base metal deposits in the semi-arid environment of the Lachlan Fold Belt of western New South Wales affects the geochemistry of outcropping ironstones (gossans) and derived soils. W eathering of the pyrite- and pyrrhotite-rich mineralisation at the Elura Zn-Pb-Ag deposit leads to highly acidic conditions and strong depletion of Cd and Zn throughout the profile. There are local attainments of high concentrations of Ag, As, Ba, Cu, Hg, Pb, Sb and Sn in the profile and As, Ba, Pb and Sb are still highly anomalous in surficial material (ironstone and soil). However, at Parkers Hill, in the Mineral Hill Field, the primary Zn-Pb mineralisation is pyrite-poor and so weathering is not as acidic as at Elura. Thus, although Ag, As, Cd, Cu, Sb and Zn may be concentrated at various levels in the Parkers Hill weathering profile, Cu and Zn (as well as As, Pb and Sb) are retained in surficial ironstones in essentially the same abundances as in primary mineralisation. Thus, variations in the suite of geochemical indicators present in ironstones and residual soils are likely to reflect differences in the original mineralogy and the degree of acidity produced during the weathering of base metal mineralisation. Hence, an understanding of weathering processes is necessary to fully interpret exploration geochemical data.

Dewatering tailing slurries by mechanical means is often not possible and gravity and solar driven processes must be used. It has been shown previously that better use of gravity is achieved when the tailing is drained as it settles. Not only are more compact sediments obtained but also the dewatering is faster. From the results of laboratory and field tests reported here, equations were established which describe the evaporation and drainage components of the dewatering. These equations were used to calculate the effects of ponding depth, solids content of the tailing and clim- atic conditions on the time required to dewater the tailing. Since the calculations can be made with and without the drainage component, the advantages to be gained with drainage can be determined. The tailing used in the work was a clay slime from a sand washing operation. However, it is anticipated that this approach will be applicable to other similar tailing.

The relationship between the process variables and hydrodynamics of a downflow concurrent column (Jameson cell) was investigated in both two and three-phase systems. Gas holdups from 10 to -60 per cent were obtained at gas rates up to 15 cm/s (STP), liquid (slurry) rates up to 25 cm/s, frother concentrations of 5 and 25 ppm, and slurry density (silica) up to 1.23 g/cm3 ina 3.8 cm diameter, 190 cm high column with a 0.5 cm diameter nozzle. Gas holdup decreases with feed rate and increases with gas rate, reaching a maximum (-60 per cent) at a gas rate to feed rate ratio of about one. Gas holdups were higher with slurry compared to water as feed. Stable operation was difficult to maintain at high gas rates especially with low frother dosage; operation was not possible without some frother. Instability was characterised by loss of pool level or formation of slugs. The slugs could move up or down or remain oscillatory. A quantitative relationship between the variables and gas holdup or onset of instability was not identified. Conductivity and pressure-based techniques were successfully tested on-line for estimation of gas holdup and to judge the state of operation (eg formation of slugs).

The Australian Mining Industry Council (A.M.I.C.) was established in 1967 as a body to co-ordinate the interests of the mining industry on a nation-wide basis. Its member- ship now embraces the great majority of mining groups in Australia. One of A.M.I.C.'s major continuing functions since its formation has been to work with Governments towards the enactment of more effective and efficient mining legislation. Yet, over the period, the,overall position, if anything has deteriorated. The main reason for this was that because of the rapid succession of what appeared to be quite separate problems during the period there was never sufficient time for Govern- ments to take stock of a situation before it would be changed by a new set of circumstances. By early 1973, the Council was certain that most of the various questions raised were really part of the one overall land use problem and its work in this area thus took a new emphasis from that time. In discussing the Council's involvement with Australian mining legislation over the last six years, the paper helps to clarify the present situation. Recent exploratory work has greatly enlarged our knowledge of the geology of the sedimentary basins of Western Australia. The most pros-pective of these for oil explorati on are believed to be the Canning, Carnarvon, 'and Perth Basins.The search for oil. in, the Canning Basin has fora the most part been concentrated in" the western part, where four main structural units are now recognized - the Lennard Shelf, Fitzroy Trough, Jurgurra Terrace, and-South Cariizin.g Basin. Of these the Leonard Shelf may. be the'most prospective. The principal objective on the Shelf is the Devonian sequence, which in-cludes well'developed reef complexes. The Lower Carboniferous is regarded., as a further objective, as it contained small quantities of oil in theMeda No. I well.In the. Carnarvon Basin most explorati on has been conducted in the coastal belt of'Tertiary folding, especially in the Cape Range-Rough Range area. -The discovery of oil in the first test well. drilled.in the-basin - Rough Range no. 1 - raised great hopes, for the quick discovery of a ecmuercial field. However the other wells on Rough Range have been dry, and no discoveries have-been made in the-wells drilled on other anticlines.in the basin.

In planning and operating mining projects, managers must take into account economic conditions in foreign markets in addition to Australian conditions. As the manager has little influence over the price or the demand for the product, it is particularly important that close attention is paid to the control of costs to ensure that the mining operation remains competitive with foreign producers. This is not necessarily true for some sectors of the domestic manufacturing industry where foreign competition is restricted and costs can be passed on to consumers because of the protection afforded by tariffs. The effects of protection on the cost structure of Australian industry are more pervasive than is commonly understood. The issue of protection is particularly important to the Australian mining industry management because the cost burdens imposed by local protection must be absorbed within profit margins. Furthermore, because protected industries are effectively subsidised to use scarce resources such as skilled labour, the development of more efficient industries such as mining is inhibited. The mining industry has much to gain from any relaxation in protection policy, and hence the issue is of considerable importance to all managers in the mining industry concerned with costs.

During recent years the iron ore industry has experienced a continuous consolidation trend following increased merger and acquisition activities. Analysing and evaluating these mergers is important in order to establish potential effects. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the price effects caused by the merger between Rio Tinto and North Ltd in 2000. The merger was cleared by the European Commission, as well as the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, shortly after its announcement. The analysis will be conducted using a simulation model based on a proportionality calibrated almost ideal demand system, which uses the premerger situation in order to estimate the post-merger outcome. The relevant market is defined using shipments data. This is followed by the simulation model applied to the defined relevant market. The results show that the concentration on the market, given by the HHI, increases approximately 15 per cent, and that the market share of the new companyÆs reaches almost 20 per cent. Compared to the CommissionÆs assessment the results indicate a more concentrated market and thus a higher concern for possible competitive effects. Furthermore, the results suggest that the predicted average market price increase from the merger is 1.6 per cent. However, the merged firm is able to increase their average price by 5.1 per cent.

Scientific drilling and blasting techniques are currently being presented to the mining industry as an aid in the overall optimisation process. The degree of success in the development of these techniques over the last ten years has prompted statements that generally relate to blasting becoming a science rather than an art. Many of the techniques are currently operated or at least analysed by scientists. As such, their use has been restricted to project type activities while the more routine activities associated with day to day mining has continued to be carried out by engineering rather than scientific staff. Some of the scientific techniques will remain legitimately as a project or an occasional use facility. Generally speaking a cost/benefit analysis at a particular mine will decide the level of use. This should logically highlight a number of techniques with potential of regular mine site use. Regular mine site use implies mine site analysis and hence the gulf between the scientist and mine operator/engineer must be addressed. There are all sorts of solutions and they are not mutually exclusive. One alternative could be to increase specialisation at the mines. With "career paths" becoming more formalised the trend would seem to be away from mine site specialists unless, for instance, this specialisation was provided by term secondment from research establishments. Another alternative could be the scientists themselves applying their developmental skills to "humanise" and "package" the projects in such a manner that they can be routinely used at mines.

There are a number of different mechanisms by which wetlands can immobilise the metals in mine drainage. Here, the biogeochemistry behind four of these mechanisms (adsorption, biological uptake, precipitation as oxyhydroxides, and precipitation as sulfides) is discussed from the perspective of sustainability. Moreover, treatment wetlands are considered as part of a larger system, also taking into account the source of the drainage and various aspects of the receiving waters. The biogeochemistry of different metal immobilisation mechanisms in wetlands determines what kind of drainage can be treated with success, and it also places an upper limit on the amount of metal that can be removed from the water phase per unit of time. This has important implications for the design of treatment wetlands, perhaps particularly in colder climates. A thorough understanding of the prevailing biogeochemical processes is essential when attempting to establish treatment wetlands after the closing of a mine. If a wetland is to be used as a sustainable æwalk-awayÆ solution, the anticipated change in treatment efficiency over time (as pollutants accumulate in the system) must be considered in relation to the expected changes in drainage quality. It is also important that the total metal immobilisation capacity of the wetland is not exceeded and that the integrity of the system is maintained, in order to minimise liberation of previously immobilised metals.

The EPA National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL) Mine Waste Technology Program (MWTP) and the EPA Region VIII Superfund office are jointly conducting a field-scale technology demonstration of a two-step in situ treatment of the acidic Anchor Hill Pit lake at the Gilt Edge Mine Superfund site near Deadwood, South Dakota, USA. The project goal is to develop cost and performance data for the in situ treatment for potential application in long-term water treatment/management activities at the Gilt Edge site, and for potential application at other similar sites. Lime neutralisation of the pit using a Neutra-Mill was accomplished in the spring of 2001, with a resultant lime utilisation efficiency of about 71 per cent, and a typical throughput of about 1 tonne per hour using coarse, pebble quicklime and 1.4 tonnes per hour using finer, ground lime. Redox-mediated biotransformation treatment of the pit has been ongoing since May 2001. As of January 2003, denitrification is complete in the near-surface waters and about 90 per cent complete in the deeper waters. Bacterial sulfate reduction is expected to begin in the near future. This paper describes project activities, results, and lessons-learned to-date as well as future monitoring plans.

Today tunnel segment liners are sealed with corner-vulcanised gaskets made of extruded elastomeric compression profiles. The profile geometries and the elastomeric materials have been further developed in course of time to meet the steadily increasing water-proofing requirements. After 40 years of using such compression gaskets, a wide range of proven standard profile geometries and well-known brands can be found on the market. Even so, there is still potential for further developments and improvement, not only with regard to the water-proofing performance. Permanently increasing cost pressure in the segment production plants demands further developments and new solutions with regard to application techniques. This is an abstract only. No paper was prepared for this abstract.

In June 1989 a diving cruise of the French submersible Nautile has been carried out on the North Fiji basin spreading ridge. The objective of the cruise was the geological and geochemical study of the active spreading axis and associated hydrothermalism processes. This operation was the third cruise of the French-Japanese STARMER project following two cruises of the R/V Kaiyo in 1987 and 1988.INTRODUCTIONAfter the Seapso III cruise (Auzende et al., 1986, 1988a and b) of the R/V Jean Charcot in 1985, the objective of the Kaiyo 87 and 88 cruises was the complementary Seabeam mapping of the North Fiji Basin spreading axis between WS and 22'S and a systematic sampling (water and rocks) and deep towing (TV and photos) at about every ten milles along the axis.

The development of reliable and accurate solution sampling systems plus on-line atomic absorption spectrophotometers and voltammetric analysers at Pasminco Metals - EZ's (PMEZ) zinc refinery at Hobart, Tasmania, has led to extensive implementation of On-Stream Analysis (OSA) throughout the hydrometallurgical circuit. These systems complement industrial autotitrator and colorimetric analysers and with the comprehensive use of a powerful integrated Distributed Control System (DCS), provide extensive monitoring and control of all the important in solution' parameters for the plant. Samples can be left unaltered, or filtered or settled, to remove solids. They are then precision diluted and pneumatically transported to analyser shelters, where they are analysed for zinc, acid, copper, cadmium, lead, antimony, cobalt, nickel, mercury and ferrous, ferric and/or total iron. The range of analyses depends on the sample itself. The results are used for feed forward and/or feedback control of reagents where possible, or simple trend monitoring and out-of-specification alarming when closed loop control is not practical. The overall system reliability and accuracy is such that many daily composite plant samples are no longer analysed off-line. Operator sampling has also been reduced, and in two places, autotitrators with automatic sample pre-treatment have been installed for preparing and analysing samples collected by operators.
