The valuation of exploration properties which contain no identified resources or reserves is the most subjective of all valuation tasks likely to be carried out by a geologist. The geoscience rating method proposed by Kilburn (1990) recognises this inherent subjectivity but also attempts to apply some discipline to the valuation process. Some other methods used for valuations of this type clearly lack discipline and are open to misuse and abuse. The Kilburn method essentially requires the practitioner to justify all aspects of the valuation process. The valuer must specify and, more importantly, quantify aspects which enhance or downgrade the intrinsic value of each property. The intrinsic value is called the ""base acquisition cost"" (BAC) and it represents the average cost to identify, apply for and retain a base unit of area of title. The BAC and base unit of area both vary with different types of exploration and mining title but remain constant for similar types of titles in the same mineral tenure regime. In the Kilburn Method the enhancement/ downgrading factors are determined by the geotechnical prospectivity (Kilburn Method) within the title. A modified version of the Kilburn Method presented here (""Modified Kilburn Method"") also focuses attention on other real variables besides the geotechnical attributes which influence valuations of this type, viz., competition for tenure and activity in the markets in which the exploration properties are being traded. The most active such market at present is the stock market. By utilising uniform BACs and base units of area (for similar titles) for all exploration properties (in practice in Australia this is only possible within a particular State or Territory), the method exposes the valuer's opinions of each of these variables to the scrutiny of the investor. The investor (or his professional adviser) is afforded the opportunity to directly compare valuations on different properties by different practitioners and can assess how the final valuation is weighted in respect of geotechnical prospectivity, competition for tenure, and stock/financial market sentiment. No other method currently employed in Australia to value mineral exploration properties affords the investor this `luxury', which some may argue is their right.

During the 20th century, the iron ore mining industries of Canada and the United States passed through several periods of transformation. The beginning of the 21st century has seen yet another period of transformation, with the economic failure of a number of steel companies, the acquisition of their facilities by more viable steelmakers, and the consolidation of control within the North American iron ore industry. Changes in Canadian and United States iron ore production and the market control structure involved are analysed. The consolidation of ownership, formation of foreign joint ventures within North America, planned divestitures of upstream activities by steelmakers, and industry changes made to ensure availability of feedstocks will be reviewed. The traditional isolation of the Canadian and United States iron ore operations and their strong linkage to downstream steel production will be discussed in the context of a changing global economy. Management-labour conflicts that have taken place and agreements made during 2000 through 2004 will be discussed in the context of the economic environment leading up to these agreements. Cooperative agreements between competing Canadian and United States companies to resolve client needs in processing and blending will be examined. A joint industry-government project designed to use new technology to produce direct reduced iron nuggets of 96 - 98 per cent iron content using non-coking coals will also be assessed. Changes in iron ore transportation methods, ownership and infrastructure will be reviewed for both rail and inland waterway transport between Canadian and United States companies. A brief analysis of social and environmental issues relating to sustainable development of the Canadian-United States iron ore industry will be included.

Electronic detonator technology has been under development for the last two decades. Currently, there are a number of systems commercially available with several others still under development, each with its own unique features. This technology can offer a significant advantage to the drill and blast engineer through their ability to initiate an explosive charge at the æplannedÆ time. This new technology has created huge interest within the drill and blast community and also raised their expectations to produce better blasting outcomes. In many cases, specifications (or even expectations) of desired blast results are not properly defined. Interaction between the input variables (rock mass characteristics and blast design) and results (fragmentation, throw, damage, ground vibrations, etc) and their mechanisms, or relationship to one another, are not very well defined or understood. That is why rock blasting is still considered by many as an art rather than science. With one of the few remaining variables (cap scatter) now controllable, todayÆs blaster finally has the ability to apply science to his trade. Even though electronic detonators are available and becoming more commonly used, current field practices are not always conducive to extracting or deriving the maximum benefit from this new technology. In the authorÆs opinion, the following need to be understood to derive and sustain the maximum value: clear definition or specification(s) of desired outcomes from a given blast; impact of different features in an electronic detonator system (precision, accuracy, flexibility, reliability, etc) and their impact on the desired blasting outcomes; interaction of blast design variables (energy, energy distribution, timing, blast geometry) and their impact on desired outcomes; impact of rock mass variability and quality of blast implementation on the desired blasting outcomes; and critical need to utlilise appropriate tools and systems in order to measure and quantify benefits.In the authorÆs opinion a scientific implementation process is the key to derive the benefits. This paper analyses the industryÆs preparedness to derive the benefits from this technology and proposes a scientific methodology to understand, evaluate and sustain the value from this technology.

Graham Hall and V. M. Cottle (Rosebery, Tas.) : In their paper on "The Mineralized Rift Valleys of Tasmania", Campana, Dickinson, King and Matheson have summarized a wealth of data from many sources. In proposing the new concept of a rift valley structure, they claim to have found a new guide to regional ore control and distribution in North-west Tasmania.Although the authors acknowledge suggestions made by us prior to publication of the pa:per, we are still at variance with their conclusions. We are not convinced that a rift valley structure exist~d when the Ordovician conglomerate was deposited. We are unable to find evidence for Cambrian deposition in a rift valley or reason to project the structure to embrace Hercules, Rosebery, and "possibly" Mt Bischoff.That the Great Lyell Fault (the authors' Owen Rift Fault) is a promising place to look for ore is not a new idea, but the existence of important ore deposits away from the structure reveals its inability to provide an adequate explanation of regional mineral distribution. A well-known structure that does have an influence on ore deposition is not discussed by the authors.STRUCTURAL CONSIDERATIONSThe great thickness of coarse unsorted Ordovician conglomerate lying in an elongate but narrow belt of country is presented as evidence of its deposition centrally within a rift valley, the position-of which is now said to be outlined by resistant slabs of the conglomerate. The marginal shears of the rift are said to show up well along the edges of the conglomerate.

It must be stressed that the following comments are offered only to assist mineral industry professionals in understanding the issues involved in personal liability. The information and views expressed herein are not intended to be a comprehensive guide or definitive statement of the law and they should not be regarded as a substitute for specific advice for individual situations. Readers should consult their own legal and other professional advisers before applying the content of this paper to their own particular circumstances. It is hardly news that work in the mining industry is governed by a complex regulatory and legal system which is constantly changing, but few realise just how directly they can be affected and become personally liable for any breaches. These may result in civil or criminal proceedings and personal assets are at risk. Owners, company directors, managers and now employees are at risk, together with consultants, contractors and suppliers of equipment or consumables, as well as government inspectors. They are liable for their personal decisions to act (or failure to act) in managing operations or carrying out directions, as well as for the actions of others under their control. This paper identifies the areas where such individuals in the open pit mining industry in Australia face the risk of personal liability and measures which can be used to minimise the risk or which can be used to make out a defence to legal action which could arise. There have always been a myriad of Commonwealth, State and Local Government laws and regulations with which to comply, and now international protocols are being used as a basis to impose greater obligations on all people. Once, the `corporate veil' gave some protection to the individual, but today there is negligible protection from the full force of the law. Not only are there various types of law enforcement officers, but public interest groups, shareholders, customers, suppliers, creditors etc may litigate. This paper is not intended to be an exhaustive discussion of the provisions of all the legislation or case law where individuals can be held) personally liable. These areas would include environmental, pollution and heritage law (including Aboriginal sacred sites); occupational health and safety (including workers' compensation) law; trade practices and fair trading law; contract law; corporations law (including the requirements of the Australian Stock Exchange [ASX] and Australian Securities Commission [ASC]); industrial relations law; anti-discrimination and sexual harassment law; taxation (including superannuation trustee) law; and the Common Law. The focus is on the following areas of regulation, which are outside the usual experience of those in the open pit mining industry (the Mining Acts and Regulations are specifically not dealt with here): ò Environment Law; ò Trade Practices Law; ò Occupational Health and Safety Law; and ò Corporations Law.

The high-shear colloidal mixer is generally recognised as the most efficient method of mixing cement based grouts. Only recently however has this technology been applied to the production of cemented rockfill (CRF) for use in underground mines in North America. Traditionally, paddle type mixers have been used to produce the cement based slurries required for the preparation of CRF. While considerable success has been achieved with these mixers, tremendous advantages are attained with the colloidal mixer. The combined effect of the highly efficient mixing action and the ability to mix low water/solids ratios, allows for reductions in the cement content for a given strength requirement. Cement can also be replaced by cheaper fillers such as flyash, resulting in further cost savings. Although large-scale dedicated CRF batching plants are typical, there is a growing need for mobile plants capable of operating anywhere underground. The compact size and rapid batching speed of high-shear colloidal mixers has allowed them to be incorporated into skid mounted systems capable of producing and discharging cement based slurries onto rockfill aggregate for the production of CRF. In many cases run-of-mine development waste can be used as CRF aggregate with these slurry plants thereby reducing the cost of waste rock removal. These relatively low cost portable plants have now allowed several mines to economically recover isolated pillars and realise positive returns on their investment.

Fine (<20 µm) valuable mineral particles are difficult to recover in conventional flotation circuits. (Trahar and Warren, 1976; Jameson, Nguyen and Ata, 2007; Kohmuench et al, 2018). This leads to a loss of valuable fine mineral particles to tailings. Recovering these particles would be of economic benefit. Novel reagents, including temperature responsive polymers, for example, are being developed to improve recovery of fine valuable mineral particles by froth flotation (Ng et al, 2018a, 2018b). The approach involves selectively aggregating the valuable fine particles and making these aggregates hydrophobic, resulting in hydrophobic aggregates of appropriate size (in order of 100 microns) being amenable to recovery by froth flotation. The polymers developed have been produced at laboratory scale but not a full scale yet. The exact cost of producing such novel polymers is currently unknown, but they are likely to be more expensive than conventional reagents.

On 30 June 2020, the Mine Land Rehabilitation Authority (the Authority) superseded the Latrobe Valley Mine Rehabilitation Commissioner as the independent overseer of Victoria’s declared mine rehabilitation. Currently, only the Latrobe Valley’s three brown coalmines are declared, with each mine at a different stage of rehabilitation and closure planning: Hazelwood ceased mining in 2017, Yallourn is scheduled to end mining in 2028 and Loy Yang in 2035. The three declared mines are very large, close together (Figure 1) and present significant environmental risks that must be mitigated during rehabilitation and post closure. In addition to fire risks, the brown coalmines are inherently unstable and require continuous monitoring and management of ground movements and groundwater pressures. Since 2007 several damaging events have occurred, highlighting the difficulties of achieving long-term stability, even with good landform design and rigorous ground control management plans

Life cycle assessment (LCA) provides an internationally standardised framework for estimating the environmental impacts associated with products or services (International Organisation for Standardisation, 2006). A particular strength of LCA is the ability to consider indirect impacts that occur at different stages of a product’s life (eg raw material acquisition, manufacture, use, disposal or recycling) and through its supply chain (Figure 1). A wide variety of impact categories are able to be considered by LCA, such as the potential contribution to global warming, ozone depletion, marine eco-toxicity or freshwater eutrophication.CSIRO has a long history of using LCA to compare the environmental impacts associated with alternative mining, mineral processing and metal production technologies (Haque and Norgate, 2014; Norgate and Haque, 2012, 2013). These ‘mine-to-metal’ assessments have primarily focused upon estimating embodied energy and greenhouse gas impacts associated with these production processes; however, more recently there has been a refocus to also consider consumptive water-use impacts in more detail (Northey et al, 2014).CITATION:Northey, S A, Haque, N and Mudd, G, 2016. The underground mine environment is inherently complex and hazardous, which necessitates ensuring mining workers’ safety. With the fast development of AI techniques, human activity recognition has become a crucial task to enhance daily life, especially in such challenging settings. This enables automatic monitoring and detection of the mine workers’ activities and operations on a large scale, which leads to better support of workers’ safety and welfare. Existing traditional uni-modal approaches, which use data of one single modality, suffer from low data quality and noise, so they struggle to generalise effectively in such extreme conditions (Li et al, 2022). As underground mines have extreme and complicated environments, such as dust, low light, signal interference, and rugged terrain, uni-modal approaches could not resolve such obstacles and are not suitable for real-world deployment. Multi-modal human activity recognition approaches could use data from multi-modal sources, thus capturing complementary information and producing robust and effective performance in recognising and monitoring mining activities. In this case, designing suitable multi-sensor hardware and AI activity recognition models has become a pivotal task. Producing efficient multi-modal approaches for edge deployment is another problem worth exploring.

The Apeketon Business Hub in Lihir, Papua New Guinea, emerged in 2019 through a partnership between Australian Business Volunteers (ABV) and Lihir Gold Limited (LGL), a subsidiary of Newmont Corporation. This development was driven by a shared vision for the Lihir gold mining operation to further enhance opportunities for the local community and strengthen the economy’s resilience post-mine. At its core, the business hub serves as the epicentre of ABV’s operations in the region. It includes a drop-in resource centre which provides the community with mentoring and consulting services, and access to a range of impactful workshops facilitated by ABV’s local staff and skilled volunteers. These workshops focus on local Lihirians but are open to the entire community, including Newmont employees. We design and continually refine Apeketon Business Hub support programs and offerings driven by community priorities, building trust through long-term relationships, and working side-by-side on real-time challenges. We offer three core programs to different levels of the community, from individuals and families to start-ups, large corporations, and landowner groups. There is significant demand for the support services provided by ABV, with over 350 Lihirians participating in our workshops over the 2023 calendar year. One of the hub’s core offerings is the Family Money Management Program, which addresses crucial challenges faced by Lihir households, particularly in terms of financial resilience. The program takes a comprehensive approach, assisting families in long-term planning and developing skills to effectively manage the income they derive from their employment with LGL and other enterprises. Significantly, the program also addresses financial stress, a factor often associated with domestic violence (Fox et al, 2002). By empowering women and promoting joint financial decision-making, the Family Money Management Program fosters a culture of savings and improved financial management, ultimately enhancing economic resilience within the community.

Multi-sensor fusion visual perception technology significantly enhances visual perception capabilities in complex and harsh environments by combining visual data from different sensors. This technology is especially useful for scenarios where traditional single visible light sensors, such as standard cameras, struggle due to poor lighting, adverse visual conditions, or other visual obstructions. In environments with low light, smoke, or dust, the performance of conventional visible light sensors degrades, limiting their application. By integrating data from various sensors like radar, infrared thermal imaging, and others, multi-sensor fusion technology provides a more comprehensive and complementary visual solution. This fusion not only enhances the robustness of visual systems but also greatly expands their potential applications in fields like visual surveillance. In recent years, deep learning methods have become the mainstream technology for addressing multi-sensor fusion issues, demonstrating significant advantages in adaptive feature selection compared to traditional machine learning methods. However, deep learning-based multi-sensor fusion algorithms still face several challenges. The design of network structures is often redundant, lacking effective screening of useful components within multimodal information. Mainstream fusion algorithms focus excessively on improving display effects without adequately considering the needs of downstream applications and tasks. Existing fusion perception algorithms are generally designed for open visual scenes and lack targeted design for complex visual degradation factors present in tunnel environments of mines. Current deep learning methods for designing multi-sensor fusion networks heavily rely on manual experience to create fusion modules. This reliance increases the complexity of network design and can lead to redundancy. Redundant network modules are difficult to identify in end-to-end learning tasks at this stage, significantly slowing down network inference and potentially interfering with the output of fusion perception. Additionally, training these fusion modules typically requires large amounts of well-annotated multimodal data, further increasing implementation difficulty and cost. For instance, the fusion network design proposed by Li and Wu (2018) focuses on extracting multimodal fusion features, while Zhao et al (2020) introduced a feature decomposition mechanism in the feature fusion and extraction modules. Researchers like Zhang and Ma (2021), Xu et al (2020), and Liu et al (2017) have attempted to improve network structures through dense cascades and the introduction of residual connections. Although these methods have improved the handling of multimodal information to some extent, they still face limitations in distinguishing between useful and redundant information, with redundancy persisting in network designs. Ideally, the design of fusion networks should be more intelligent, guiding network structure design heuristically based on the importance of different modal information for the current task. This would reduce information redundancy and network weights, requiring the development of new algorithms or frameworks capable of automatically identifying and optimising fusion strategies, thereby reducing dependence on manual experience while improving fusion efficiency and network performance. The Henty Gold Mine is a good example of a situation where conditional simulation and optimisation techniques may have useful impact on modelling of mineralisation distribution and ore definition. Much of the gold mineralisation at Henty is concentrated within an alteration zone which is both physically discontinuous and forms only a small fraction of the overall mineralised volume. The alteration units are mappable from diamond drill core and underground workings. Conditional simulation and optimisation techniques for ore definition have found considerable success in the open pit gold mining environment. For many reasons including computational efficiency, lack of consistent geological information, and lack of familiarity with ideas and methods among mine geologists, implementations of these methods in open pit mining have been comparatively simplistic. Modelling is commonly reduced to treating the sample data as a single geologic population. This paper discusses the application of the MP method (a particular implementation of conditional simulation and optimisation) to modelling the distribution of potential ore blocks in the Henty gold mineralisation. The approach allows the mine geologist to model both the spatial geometry of the alteration types and the gold grades associated with each alteration type in a single process. Options allow the geologist to include or exclude underground geological mapping and face sampling depending mainly on the abundance of drill hole sampling and the quality of the face sampling. An optimisation algorithm based on maximisation of profit from mining is used to assist in ore definition.

Acid and Metalliferous Drainage (AMD) is one of the key risks facing the mining industry worldwide. If not properly managed and/or not identified in a timely manner, AMD has the potential to decrease environmental values for generations to come. Ore extraction generates vast volumes of mineral waste (waste rock and tailings) which are stored in perpetuity at the mine site. Some of these materials are not inert and when in contact with air and water can react, generating poor quality water and compromising operational and closure environmental objectives. Understanding the geochemical behaviour of waste rock and tailings is therefore key to identifying risks and opportunities which support effective mineral waste management strategies across the mining value chain and progress toward an environmentally sustainable future that minimises closure liabilities. To ensure AMD risk is recognised and managed uniformly across its portfolio, BHP developed a Global AMD Management Standard for implementation across all operations, including closed sites. The AMD Management Standard provides a management framework to support the consistent, simple and sustainable global management of AMD risks. This ensures mines are planned and operated to be environmentally smart and modern, geochemical risk management is not an afterthought but a key driver, and environmental sustainability is actively pursued to reduce closure liabilities. The AMD Management Framework, on which the Standard is based, was adapted from industry leading practice guidance, ensuring it applies to multiple regions. The framework also comprises sequential requirements throughout the mining life-cycle. It is an iterative framework with an adaptive management approach that is designed to incorporate new data, information and management opportunities into AMD risk assessments and mine plan revisions.
