Social licence to operate is developed and kept through managing both operational impacts and the relationship between local community and company. However, CSIRO research has demonstrated that in determining how accepting community members are of a mining operation, relational factors, such as procedural fairness and trust, are much more important than operational impacts, such as impacts on employment and the environment (Moffat and Zhang, 2015). Companies seek to develop relational factors through their engagement with local community; such engagement has many aspects, including, initially identifying stakeholders and positioning the company as part of the local community (Lacey et al, in prep; Thomson and Boutlier, 2011). These relational factors involve the social identities of people living in the community. Social identities are a part of people that shape their beliefs, based on their connections with various groups in their lives (Hogg et al, 2004).An engagement process, intentionally or not, inevitably interacts with the social identities of stakeholders (Crane and Ruebottom, 2011). For example, traditionally, at the very beginning of engagement processes, community members are assigned to categories using conventional stakeholder mapping and categorisation methods, often based on assumptions about stakeholders’ interests, which equates to assumptions about stakeholders’ social identities (Colvin, Witt and Lacey, 2016; International Council on Mining and Metals, 2012). Yet, there has been limited empirical inquiry into whether such categories reflect the social identities of stakeholders and if there is a bearing on relational factors, including, the perceived fairness of consultations and trust in mining companies (Crane and Ruebottom, 2011). Also at this time, companies commonly seek to create a presence in communities, for example, joining Chambers of Commerce and participating alongside community members. Again, there has been limited empirical inquiry into whether community members and companies identifying with the same overarching group and thus sharing aspects of social identity, influences relational factors (Crane and Ruebottom, 2011). In this study, we examined the effects of changing aspects of social identity by changing how stakeholders were identified and companies were positioned, on how stakeholders’ perceived a new mining operation, specifically how they perceived the procedural fairness of the proposed consultation process and trusted the company, two factors that underlie a company’s social licence to operate.CITATION:Carr-Cornish, S and Moffat, K, 2016. Tailings are mostly loose material and can be classed as non-plastic sandy silts. They also tend to have low permeability, resulting in slow consolidation (settling) rates and low shear strength, even after consolidation. These qualities make them prone to liquefaction and, therefore, physical instability. In contrast, coarse waste rocks possess high shear strength and permeability when stacked in dumps. However, air and water flow-through the voids can cause acid mine drainage (AMD) with significant undesirable environmental implications. Combining the two waste streams before disposal by mixing presents a potential opportunity to harness the desirable properties of both waste streams. This practice is termed co-mingling and is prevalent within the coal processing industry. Co-mingling of metalliferous mine tailings is, however, a relatively new concept. By combining the coarse waste rocks and fine-grained tailings streams, the fine tailings tend to fill the voids between the waste rocks, reducing hydraulic conductivity and advective air (oxygen) flow into the rocks, thus possibly reducing acid mine drainage (AMD). Conversely, tailings are introduced to large frictional particles from waste rocks, providing reinforcement, stability, and possibly improved drainage. New separation methods are being introduced to the mining sector, which have the capacity to extract waste with significantly larger particle sizes. High Voltage Pulse (HVP) is a technology in which relatively coarse particles ranging in size from 30 to 100 mm are exposed to an electric pulse discharge. This pulse preferentially fractures mineralised particles while leaving unmineralised rock (gangue) intact. The stream can then be passed via a screen, with smaller mineralised particles reporting to the undersize and removing coarser unbroken barren particles, thereby eliminating waste. Coarse particle flotation (CPF) is another emerging new technology in metalliferous mining that applies flotation separation to coarser particles than conventional flotation. These new technologies produce different tailings (waste) streams with varying physical characteristics and possibly surface chemistries. This research aims to test new tailings mixtures by applying the co-mingling concept to blend the reject streams generated by these two technologies (HVP and CPF) with the tailings produced by conventional flotation. Combining different waste streams before disposal can improve stability and potentially reduce the acid mine drainage (AMD) rate, thus enabling early access to the tailings storage facility for rehabilitation and closure.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. This paper aims to highlight the global exploration opportunities that exist in connection with Ural-Alaskan (UA)-type intrusions. The key economic importance of UA intrusions is the existence of metallic platinum (mainly iron-platinum alloys) associated generally with chromite mineralisation and located within a dunite core, especially its coarse-grained part. Being very dense and resistant to erosion, platinum can form rich placers as the intrusion erodes. Big multimillion ounce placer platinum deposits of this type have historically been successfully mined for many years (eg Russia, Colombia and Alaska).However, large-scale exploration and mining of platinum placers currently occurs only in the Russian Far East. Outside of Russia, there is now little or no understanding of this type of deposit and its economic importance. Using successful operations in Russia as examples, it is demonstrated that there are many opportunities for similar discoveries all around the world, especially around the Pacific Rim, where such intrusions tend to be concentrated. Examples of highly prospective areas in eastern Australia and New Zealand are given. There is also excellent potential in British Columbia (BC) Canada, South-East Asia (Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia) and South America (Colombia and Ecuador).CITATION:Nazimova, Y and Ryan, G, 2015. Geometallurgical characterisation of ore deposits is accepted practice in some parts of the mining industry today. Its primary aim is to provide constrained inputs that reflect inherent geological variability and its impact on metallurgical performance for the deposit. Geometallurgy improves project value because it suggests more valuable alternatives for scheduling and processing through an increased knowledge and understanding of the interactions of rock properties and extractive technologies. Lower project cost (both capital and processing) and improved recoveries are the result from closer tailoring of the mining and mineral processing strategies to the characteristics of the resource (Dunham, Vann and Coward, 2011). Tailings storage facilities (TSFs) can be seen as potential resources and it is argued that fundamental geometallurgical characterisation as applied in ore deposit characterisation should also be applied to planning the retreatment of TSFs. This paper will describe a research project at Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Resource Centre assessing if geometallurgical principles and methodologies can successfully be applied to TSFs as they have been to primary deposits. The project is establishing a new standard method of tailings evaluation which will include a 3D spatial model of the tailings resource. Initial domaining of the TSFs was done using principal component analysis followed by k-means cluster analysis based on chemical assays from drill core samples. The subsequent characterisation of the drill core samples has involved chemical, mineralogical and metallurgical profiling, with a range of metallurgical tests being conducted on the samples. This characterisation step is followed by class-based analysis, predictive modelling and process performance domaining with the ultimate objective of establishing a 3D spatial model incorporating geochemical, mineralogical and metallurgical performance data. This approach, which takes into account processing performance permits a more realistic (as compared to doing limited chemical assays and metallurgical testing) economic evaluation of the potential of reprocessing the tailings material. It is believed that the approach is generic and can be applied to other TSFs being considered for reprocessing. The seismic velocities of intact rock are dependent on the applied stress. Unfortunately, the low susceptibility of seismic velocity to stress changes mean that changes in seismic velocity have to be measured extremely accurately to infer stress changes from them. Previously, it was thought that measurements of this accuracy could only be made with active sources or repeating earthquakes. In this paper, we show that the noise generated by mining activity can be used to construct virtual seismic signals with which we can measure changes in seismic velocity accurately enough to see the short- and long-term effects of a production blast on the surrounding medium. The time-dependent velocity variations achieved with this method show that the blast caused weakening of the rock mass for the rock within a radius of 200 m of the blast. The weakening is healed by confining stresses over a period of five days, after which permanent changes in the seismic velocity can be seen. The size and spatial distribution of the seismic velocity changes were compared to modelled changes in static volumetric stress, which supported the notion that seismic velocity changes can be used to measure the redistribution of stress after a blast. The results of this study indicate that this method can be a powerful tool to evaluate the evolution of stress in a mine at a relatively low cost as the data that it uses would normally be discarded.CITATION:Olivier, G, Lynch, R A and Brenguier, F, 2016. Fifteen samples 'of clays and shales from the Adelaide area were selected from a total of 84 as representing material of possible value for the manufacture of light-weight aggregate. A detailed examination of the bloating. characteristics of these revealed four likely to be suitable. for expansion.' in a rotary kiln. One of these, a Tapley. Hill shale., was-fired in an 8 in. diameter rotary kiln, but con-tinuous bloating without ring formation in the kiln was not achieved. Steam,,-oxygen,, sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide have been, suggested. as the agents of bloating. An examina-tion of .. the evidence : `leads to the conclusion that carbon dioxide derived from. carbonate minerals is likely to be the principal bloating agent. Attempts to bloat clays by the addition of mica were.not successful.

A considerable debate has arisen regarding the best route for the beneficiation of iron ore. Supporters of jigging technology claim that although the technology is old, due to recent advances in jig control and a better understanding of the separation processes within jigs, it offers significant advantages over dense medium separation, especially in terms of reduced capital and operating costs and simplicity of design. Supporters of dense medium separation claim that this technology is proven to provide the best possible separation and that the gain in efficiency over the life of the plant, compared to that of a jig, will more than offset any differences in capital or operating costs. The truth is that both viewpoints are valid and that the choice is ultimately determined by specific characteristics of the ore being treated. Factors that need to be taken into account in deciding upon the correct option include the size/density distribution of the ore to be treated, the different size fractions which must be treated (lumpy or fines), differences in yield at grade, plant layout and capital and operating costs. Each of these factors will be discussed in detail and a case study for both lumpy and fines will be presented.

Coal exploration and mine planning now use all the modem techniques to indicate geological hazards to a new or developing coal mine. Drilling, seismic and other sophisticated geophysical methods aim to increase the reliability of prediction of features which will inhibit mine development. But do they?. During the past 40 years, geological investigations for coal mines in New South Wales have ranged from the general observations of Eric Rudd, in the Southern Coalfield in the late 1940s to the very detailed examinations of roof strata by John Shepherd and others in the 1980s. Then, the large scale regional relationships between sedimentary and structural features often were ignored as the minute examination of seam roof strata became fashionable.

Remote monitoring of geological situation at distant regions with complicated relief, including reliable detection of the rock falls and estimation of the scale of accidents, is of great importance for practical needs. In the paper, vibration data, caused by fall of sample objects and registered by cable sensors, are processed and analysed in order to construct some measure for the indirect evaluation of weight of fallen objects. Nonlinear models, which based on artificial neural networks (ANN), are proposed for the signal presentation. To improve and simplify the learning and classification abilities of the whole system, the aggregative learning method (ALM) is implemented. ALM features relatively low memory and computational resources needed for the procedure realisation, especially for data classification (recall) stage, in compare to conventional methods. The validity and efficiency of the proposed approach are tested through its application for rock fall detection and weight evaluation system using cable sensors and mobile communication network. Classification abilities of the proposed approach are shown useful for estimation of the fallen object weight. Characterised with high computational efficiency and simple decisionmaking procedure, the derived method can be useful for simple and reliable real-time monitoring system design.

Successful chemical control of flotation requires practical solutions to many problems. A brief discussion is first given of those para- meters which can be controlled and those which it would be desirable to control. Suitable analytical methods for application to flowing pulp and to clear solution from pulp are out- lined in relation to on-line and off-line control. Practical problems of deciding where a measurement is to be made or a sample is to be taken and how the sample is to be prepared and presented to the measuring device are then considered. Equipment calibration and maintenance are considered in relation to the above factors.

The Charters Towers 1:250 000 Gravity Data Set represents a new initiative of the Department of Resource Industries (DRI, formerly Queensland Department of Mines) to provide high quality regional gravity data over areas of the State that have high potential for new mineral discoveries. The Department has adopted a strategy to upgrade geophysical data to complement the ongoing Regional Geological Mapping Program (RGMP) of this Department and in areas where the data would be of most benefit to the mineral exploration industry. Part of this strategy is to ensure that these data are released within 6 months of data collection.The 1989 Charters Towers survey was completed as a joint project with the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics (BMR), and is the first regional geophysical data acquisition project undertaken by the DRI. Prior to this survey, the only gravity data in this area dates from the B MR regional surveys carried out between 1960 and 1967.

Geomechanics is one of the more specialised aspects of site supervision on a major tunnell- ing project. The controlled deformation of a rock mass as a result of tunnelling and the knowledge of loading of temporary and permanent underground supports are important for safe, economic construction. These basic parameters depend on the construction method and sequence and the geological conditions through which a tunnel is driven. Thus geomechanical monitoring during the construction phase provides feedback to a design team and allows any revisions to a design to cater for local conditions not revealed by earlier investigations. Detailed geological mapping is an integral part of geomechanics in the construction phase. It serves as a monitor on pre construction predictions and also forms part of the as- constructed record. If conventional excavation-techniques are adopted, geomechanics can provide a service of blast' vibration monitoring of surface structures in urban areas.

In July 2004 a flotation concentrate regrind circuit was commissioned in the æHigh GradeÆ Ridgeway concentrator at NewcrestÆs Cadia Valley Operations. This was the culmination of two years of project testing, process design and planning which commenced shortly after commissioning the concentrator in March 2002. During the two-year project evolution alternative grinding technologies were evaluated from conventional ball milling through to sand milling. A Detritor mill was eventually selected for the duty and the criteria on which this selection was based will be presented. As the project evolved so too did the equipment sizing with the concentrator quickly exceeding design capacity of 4 Mtpa and currently averaging 5.6 Mtpa, the process design had to accommodate this and future potential throughput increases. This paper will focus on the supporting testwork, circuit surveys and concentrate properties which were used as the design basis for the project. The economic evaluation which led to the project receiving board approval in November 2003 will also be presented. Detailed design and construction management issues will be discussed as will preliminary results and findings up to November 2004.

The three systems of mining in use in the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales are bord and pillar with or without subsequent extrac- tion, longwall and shortwall. Bord and pillar with extraction is regarded as the conventional system. The application of continuous miners and powered roof supports (Shortwall) to coal min- ing has, grown in recent years from something of an oddity among extraction systems to an acceptable and viable approach in certain min- ing environments. The method can be applied in a high proportion of situations where normal pillar extraction is practised with advantages over the conventional approach. These advantages extend to both safety and efficiency aspects and also include better utilization of coal reserves. It holds hope for further gain in efficiency because its simplicity of layout lends itself to achieving the goal of contin- uous haulage towards which operators are always striving.

Queensland Mines Limited operates a small uranium treatment plant at Nabarlek in the Arnhem Land Aboriginal Reserve, some 265 km due east of Darwin. It was the wish of the local Aboriginal people that the ore be treated over an eight year period and that no township be constructed in Arnhem Land. Due to these wish- es it was decided to house employees and their families in Darwin and fly the employees to the minesite for work rosters. A singleman's style camp only was constructed at Nabarlek. To satisfy the Aboriginal people's wishes all recreation time is spent offsite thus lead- ing to a roster system whereby employees spend three distinct periods of 6, 6 and 4 days on- site, broken by recreation periods of 3, 4 and 5 days in Darwin, during each 28 day period. Employees are divided into four opposing rosters, which allows at any given time for approximately half the workforce to be onsite and the other half on rest and recreation leave in Darwin. This method of staffing has generally proved to be most satisfactory although at times problems arise, in terms of both product- ion and social effect not normally encountered when operating within more conventional circum- Stances.

Since 1989 Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines has managed the Kalgoorlie gold operations of joint venture partners Normandy Mining Ltd and Homestake Gold of Australia Ltd. Current production from the Fimiston Open Pit is approximately 650 000 ounces per annum. The mine incorporates a multitude of narrow shear hosted, subvertical lodes, predominantly within Golden Mile Dolerite. Traditionally KCGM has used blasthole based grade control in the Fimiston pits. A single sample is taken from vertical production blastholes, drilled on ten metre benches. This process was improved with the addition of infill drilling along blasthole rows to provide additional samples across strike. However the limitations of adequately defining subvertical mineralised structures with vertical blastholes remain. In 1997 the first of two trial areas were drilled with close spaced, inclined Reverse Circulation (RC) drilling. These tests indicated that RC based grade control had the potential to provide significant advantages. These include:improved delineation of mineralised structures, particularly across strike; reliable short-term mine schedules based on the advance data available from drilling over three benches; and the angled RC drilling is capable of providing samples of near stope and stope fill material which often remains unsampled by blasthole drills due to the safety constraints around unstable underground openings. Based on the success of this initial work RC based grade control was gradually implemented across production areas commencing September 1998. Some of the many challenges faced include:development of effective procedures and systems for the planning, logging, interpretation and modelling of the RC data; obtaining adequate drill coverage due to mine scheduling constraints and restricted access around underground openings; requirement for integrated systems to handle either blast hole or RC data; and development of effective methods to evaluate the performance of RC grade control. RC based grade control is delivering significantly improved lode definition, grade estimation and subsequent ore classification.

Alcoa World Alumina AustraliaÆs Huntly and Willowdale bauxite mines are located in the Darling Range of South Western Australia, which places their operations within PerthÆs surface water supply catchments. These catchments supply Perth with its highest quality drinking water. With the decreasing rainfall trend of recent years catchment yields to water supply reservoirs have reduced to such an extent that water use restrictions were necessary in Perth for 2001, 2002 and 2003. Protection of catchment water quality and water use conservation are crucial issues for AlcoaÆs operations within the Darling Range. Alcoa has been conducting bauxite mining activities in water supply catchments since the mid-1960s. During that time Alcoa has worked closely with the relevant State Government water and environmental agencies to ensure that its operations do not adversely impact catchment water yield and water quality. Monitoring and research have shown that Alcoa has the necessary environmental management systems in place to ensure it can continue to operate in a sustainable manner within water supply catchments. AlcoaÆs mines reduced the volume of water taken from public water supply catchments by 24 per cent in 2002, compared with 2000. This success has had an added benefit; Alcoa does not need to develop a new water source for its Huntly Mine. The conservation measures implemented to reduce water use include: increasing water recycling, using chemical additives for haul road dust suppression, conducting water audits, reducing water demand, monitoring water use, promoting water use targets and training staff in water conservation.
