New Zealand Steel Mining Limited operates two independent sand mining operations on the West Coast of the North Island of New Zealand. Waikato North Head 30 km south of Auckland supplies ironsand concentrate as the raw feed for New Zealand Steel's works at Glenbrook and Taharoa 70 km further south, exports ironsand concentrate to Japan.   Taharoa uses two sets of six low pressure Warman centrifugal pumps in series to load bulk ore carriers 3 km off shore through two underwater pipelines. Waikato North Head delivers the ironsand to Glenbrook 18 km through a 200 mm ID buried pipeline using two stages of high pressure positive displacement (HPPD) pumping.   A high level of operating and maintenance expertise has been developed since commissioning the two systems which are proving to be reliable, efficient and of minimal impact environmentally.

UNDER a contract relating to the sale of a Broken Hill concentrate, the differentiation between granular and slime concentrate is determined by the proportion of the material which will pass a 200-mesh (I.M.M. standard) screen, and this has led to considerable attention being devoted to the question of laboratory sizing tests with screens of this order.It was found that many of the screens turned out by the makers during the war, and also since its termination, did not conform with the I.M.M. specifications as closely as some supplied in pre-war days. A perfect screen is hardly to be expected, but when the above contract was framed the parties anticipated that, by special care being taken during manufacture, a screen at least as good as the best pre-war screens would be available. This, however, has not proved to be the case, and the large irregularities in screens recently supplied render them useless for sizing determinations under the contract. The development of Western Mining Corporation's first commercial gold heap leaching operation is described. The laboratory testwork requirements for determining the amenability of ore to heap leaching techniques is discussed. Heap construction and operating practices are described; and production statistics and operating parameters are presented. It is shown that for a specific low grade gold ore a treatment cost optimization can be performed. Taking cognizance of the ore grade, percentage gold recovery, operating costs, and the gold sale price, it can be determined whether Carbon-In-Pulp (C-I-P) or Heap Leaching should be employed as the extraction process. The examples presented in this paper refer specifically to Kambalda and should not be used in themselves as generalities.

HYL developed a direct reduction process (DR) that does not require a reformer; it is called self-reforming process. Typically, direct reduction processes based on natural gas utilise a reformer unit to transform the natural gas into reducing agents (hydrogen and carbon monoxide). The reforming reactions are: CH4+H20-?3H2+CO CH4 + CO2 - 2H2 + 2CO These reforming units require a catalyst agent to promote the kinetics of the reforming reactions. The catalyst for these reactions is typically a metallic element such as nickel in a ceramic matrix; iron is also an excellent catalyst for the reforming reactions.

A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.The recent and active magmatic arcs of eastern Papua New Guinea (PNG) and the Solomon Islands are well endowed with sulfide mineralisation and include deposits such as Ladolam, Panguna and Solwara 1. The majority of the mineral systems in this belt are younger than four million years old, with some deposits remaining active to the present day as exemplified by active hydrothermal systems on the island of Lihir. The geodynamic setting that led to the formation of these deposits is still unresolved, with, for example, both the Pacific and Solomon Sea plates considered responsible for the formation of the Ladolam deposit on the island of Lihir under different models. In order to understand and characterise the formation of south-west Pacific mineral deposits, we must first reconstruct the complex geodynamic evolution of the region. New kinematic reconstructions show that while mineral systems in eastern PNG and the Solomon Islands are hosted within a single arc related to subduction at the New Britain and San Cristobal trenches, variable and discrete geodynamic settings exist within both the upper and lower plates throughout this region, which give rise to distinct mineralised corridors. Most notably, this region is host to: the Solwara 1 deposit, which occurs within a major transtensional corridor in the eastern Bismarck Sea the Ladolam deposit (Lihir), which is interpreted to have formed above but in relation to tearing of the subducting slab the Panguna deposit, which is related to structure in the subducting slab marginal to the actively spreading Woodlark Basin.An evaluation of the nature and variability of these diverse geodynamic settings through time can provide us with a better understanding of the relationship between the active south-west Pacific magmatic arcs and mineral deposit formation. The Rise and Shine Shear Zone is a mineralised low-angle deformation zone traceable for at least 7 km through biotite zone schist of the Dunstan Range, central Otago. The zone is commonly believed to be similar to the actively mined Macraes deposit. The Rise and Shine Shear Zone occurs in the immediate footwall of the Thomsons Gorge Fault, a regional scale Cretaceous normal fault that juxtaposes chlorite zone schist against biotite zone schist. Most mineralised rocks are deformed and record a progression from early stages of semiductile deformation to more brittle cataclasis. Folds in mineralised rocks trend northwards. The mineralised schist is hydrothermally altered with variable silicification, sericitisation, chloritisation, replacement of titanite by rutile and carbonate alteration. Gold is associated with pyrite and arsenopyrite and occurs in both ductile and brittle microstructures. Sheared and mineralised schist is cut by north-striking fault zones which host mineralised quartz veins. Veins in the shear zone contain hydrothermal albite. Trace element analyses show enrichment in As, U, Th and rare earth elements. Many of the above features are similar to Macraes deposit, but there are important differences. In particular, the Macraes deposit is hosted in lower grade rocks and truncated beneath by a normal fault, Macraes has no U or Th enrichment, Macraes veins have no albite and folds at Macraes trend NW-W. Rise and Shine mineralised rocks have no Cr enrichment and no hydrothermal graphite.

Situated in the Greymouth Coalfield, the Mt Davy Block contains a significant resource of high quality bituminous coal suitable for use in metallurgical coking coal blends. The coal, which is all low sulphur, is seen as a complementary deposit to export coking coal at Stockton Mine.   Previous drilling by State Coal Mines (1948 - 1953) and Japanese interests (1970's) have been supplemented by Coal New Zealand drilling (1992 - 1993) and surface mapping. A mining feasibility study was completed in late 1993 and approval gained for the driveage of an exploratory tunnel to the target seam.   Following construction of surface facilities, tunnel driveage on a 1:5 decline commenced from Rewanui in May 1995 and to date about half the required length has been driven. When the seam is intersected a comprehensive geotechnical testing programme will be undertaken to assess the in-situ mining conditions. It is expected that the results will confirm the assumptions made in the feasibility study.   The Mt Davy Mine, at depths of 500 - 700 metres, will be the deepest underground coal mine ever inNew Zealand and in-situ stresses (orientation and magnitude) will be important considerations for mining engineering. The coal has a high gas content and suitable techniques for gas control and prevention/mitigation of coal outbursts will be necessary.   Mine development is scheduled to commence in mid 1998 and an annual production level of 500 000 tonnes is forecast. The coal seams will be developed by continuous miner and coal extraction will be by hydraulic monitor. Coal will be pumped to the surface and from Rewanui transported five kilometres to Dunollie either by truck or slurry pipeline. At Dunollie a coal dewatering plant, coal stockpile and rail loadout will be constructed.

Disposable-tip emf cells at present used in liquid steel can be used to measure the state of oxidation of high-iron slags produced in non-ferrous smelting. This provides a new tool for the control and evaluation of pyrometallurgical operations.An investigation of oxygen potential variations throughout a typical nickel smelter using the flash smelting technique gave a valuable insight into the process. Correlations of oxygen potential with ferric to ferrous oxide ratio and nickel content in slag were in reasonable accord with equilibrium data in the literature indicating that the probes may be used both as a plant investigation tool and possibly as a means of obtaining thermodynamic data for slags.

The Mongol-Okhotsk belt consists of detached fragments of the Circum Pacific fold belt which have been trapped within the Mongol-Okhotsk fold belt. In its western part, the structures of the belt form an east-facing loop that is not connected with the other orogenic structures of Central Asia. In the eastern part of the belt (the Mongol-Okhotsk suture zone) the terranes form a zone between the Siberian craton to the north and the Bureya composite terrane to the south, that is linked with the Circum Pacific belt. The accretionary terranes, together with their Precambrian backstops, form a series of consistently-stacked, paired units that are bounded by northwest and north trending sinistral strike-slip faults. The ages of the rocks forming these accretionary complexes vary from Late Precambrian - Carboniferous in the west to Cambrian - Jurassic in the east. The terranes developed due to a progressive westward stacking of the accretionary complexes during the process of accretionary growth. The magmatic rocks young eastward indicating that migration of the magmatic front of the arc followed the eastward growth of the accretionary complexes. The accretionary terranes may be differentiated by their Paleozoic lithological assemblages. Only the Selemdzha, Niman, and Kerbi terranes located in the eastern part of the Mongol-Okhotsk suture zone contain significant amounts of black shale, and it is these terranes that host the bulk of the hardrock and placer gold mineralisation that is present within the suture zone. Gold mineralisation is present both as vein style and disseminated mineralisation within structural duplexes.

The Groote Eylandt manganese ore deposits contain mainly pyrolusite and cryptomelane with lesser amounts of the manganese minerals lithiophorite, todorokite, psilomelane, and nsutite. The major non-manganese minerals which occur are quartz, kaolinite, and goethite.Determination of the mineralogy relies mainly on x-ray diffraction analysis. Quantitative methods for the determination of pymlusite and cryptomelane in Groote Eylandt manganese ores have been developed, A large amount of isomorphous substitution may occur in the manganese minerals and a number of minor and trace element associations have been noted. A correlation has been established between the potassium and cryptomelane contents for a wide range of ore types. Anomalous calcium, magnesium, and sodium values occur in samples containing todorokite, and barium is associated with psilomelane. Groote Eylandt lithiophorite appears to contain negligible amounts of lithium (<O· 05 per cent).A relationship between the H20+ and the Al203, K20, and Fe203 contents has been estahlished indicating that much of the combined water content is due to the presence of kaolinite and goethite, and cap be removed by beneficiation of the ore.

Two new splitter designs for intercepting moving streams of matter are presented, the variable cross-stream splitter (vCSS) and the rotary stream splitter (RSS), which are intended for implementation in a fully automated modus. The vCSS facilitates obtaining up to three subsamples with different splitting ratios from automated laboratory flow paths, while the RSS divides the intercepted sample into 16 equal analytical aliquots. The splitters can process a wide range of dry, granular and free-flowing materials (<5 mm). The required weight for each subsample can be set without mechanical adjustments in the case of the vCSS. Typical applications are subsampling/splitting for X-ray fluorescence pelletisation (or fused beads) or splitting for average shift composite sampling or grain size analysis. The vCSS combines the advantages of riffle splitting (three user-defined subsample masses) with miniature bed blending and can accept up to 15 kg in total incoming sample mass. In practice, the automated vCSS can deal with unlimited ingoing mass fluxes, while the RSS is designed to operate at a user-defined fixed subsampling rate (1/16th in the tested version). Both splitters have the potential to be optimised and evaluated according to an application/user-defined total sampling error (TSE) + total analytical error (TAE) threshold. Both splitters were tested under adverse conditions and with compositions involving three components with properties representing typical mass fluxes and components concentrations in industrial and technological systems: phosphate concentrate 89.00 per cent (<500 µm), slag ten per cent (>2 mm) and glass spheres one per cent (750–1000 µm). The slag particles vary widely in particle shape, aspect ratio and surface roughness, while the glass spheres are extremely prone to bouncing and segregation (spillage). This test system is extremely difficult to split and thus constitutes a realistic worst-case scenario. While the vCSS does not comply strictly with Theory of Sampling demands for correctness, both splitters may well be able to deliver fit-for-purpose representative results if/when tested properly. Average relative mass deviations ranged from 1.89 per cent for phosphate concentrate (relative standard deviations of 20-fold repeated splitting) to 4.72 per cent for glass spheres and 13.04 per cent for slag. For the RSS, the average replication experiment splitting variation was 2.89 per cent for phosphate concentrate, 4.82 per cent for glass spheres and 11.1 per cent for slag. Both new automated online splitters would therefore appear to be able to be tuned to fit-for-purpose representivity (defined here as maximum relative reproducibility <5 per cent) for many non-extreme materials; however, it is always imperative to test every new type/class of material empirically. There is no doubt that the mining sector is considered to be the backbone of many countries. Furthermore, it has played an important role in the prosperity of nations, whether developed or developing. Saudi Arabia is one of these countries that has a large variety of metallic and non-metallic mineral resources that range in size and value occurrences of limited potential to deposits large enough to sustain profitable exploitation. Therefore, the Saudi government needs to reinforce the capacity of the sectoral institutions to better regulate and promote the sustainable development of the sector. The ability to overcome the administrative and legal complications that constrain private sector participation in the minerals sector, through new mining code which will streamline the procedures for obtaining licenses and will add more predictability and transparency to the application process, are proposed for increasing the sustainable development. This paper will outline how the Saudi government is tackling the major challenges that face the minerals industry. This paper provides the background to the Saudi Arabian mineral sector and its industrial base. Finally, the paper identifies the problems and constraints that face the minerals sector in Saudi Arabia and provides an assessment of the effects of government policies and planning efforts in the minerals sector, particularly during the period of the development plans which started in 1970.

When Haematite Explorations Pty. Ltd. began prospecting for petroleum in 1960, there was only ill-defined geological evidence on the land bordering Bass Strait to support the belief that petroleum lay trapped in sedimentary formations beneath its shallow waters.A reconnaissance of the area, made in 1961 by the airborne magnetometer method, covered the waters and islands of the Strait and overlapped the Victorian and Tasmanian coasts. The survey indicated the presence of the Bass Basin (which is completely water-covered), assisted in outlining the Otway and Gippsland Basins, and showed that each basin contains sedimentary rocks over 10,000 ft thick. Information on the regional geology and minor volcanic activity was also obtained.Marine seismic surveys carried out from 1962 to 1965 defined these basins more accurately and showed the nature and structure of the thick sedimentary sections.Correlation of the seismic data with onshore wells identified the sediments as Tertiary and Mesozoic. Subdivisions of the former in all basins and the latter in the Otway Basin were made. These Tertiary and Mesozoic rocks are not seriously deformed and they have good prospects of containing petroleum.Possible structural and stratigraphic traps, recognized from the seismic record sections by petroleum geologists, are being tested by offshore drilling which began in 1964.

The greater part of this paper comprises the material used in a lecture delivered to the South Queensland Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in September, 1949. It contains little in the way of original matter, its main purpose being to call attention to the need for research into the properties of Queensland coals and to indicate some of the lines such investigations might profitably follow.Since the lecture was given the Powell Duffryn (1949) 1 report, which has made an excellent start along these lines, has been printed. This report is, however, only a beginning, though a big one, and there is ample room for many years of work along similar lines.The paper is based largely on the work of de Jersey (1946, 1949)2,3,4,5 and Jones and de Jersey (1947)6, but these workers in turn owe a debt to the work of many British and American investigators, too many to enumerate. Reconciliation has become very topical over the last ten years but how do we distinguish what is good practice, and even more importantly, show how it adds value? Reconciliation at Anglo American has received support from the very top of the company and this has enabled success in the design and implementation of a range of processes, reporting activities and actions. Focus has been on full Mine Value Chain Reconciliation (MVCR) from Resource to Product and on proactive cross-functional engagement. A standardised set of reconciliation definitions and relationships are used at all mines across the company to diagnose planning and performance issues. Results are formally presented in an efficient dashboard format, accompanied by a concise narrative to communicate what has been learned and what is being done to correct, improve or change practices. Importantly, effort has also been made to sustain MVCR by embedding good practice and quantifying the benefit of reconciliation explicitly via linking results to value.This paper sets out the lessons learned from the past two-years’ journey, highlighting areas where good practice has been defined and achieved. A ranking for quantifying reconciliation confidence over time is presented as a means of putting results into context and continuously improving the reconciliation process. OneSteel and BlueScope Steel have been working with the CSIRO to develop sustainable carbon fuels and reductants which are suitable for use in the iron and steel industry. One of the initial focuses of this work has been a process called steel recarburisation which is the addition of carbon to liquid steel to produce particular steel grades. This paper reports on the preliminary work and the recent full scale recarburisation plant trials conducted at the OneSteel Sydney Steel Mill.   Preliminary experimental work involved kilogram scale recarburisation of liquid steel with a range of commercial and prepared charcoal products. This work showed that charcoal dissolves into liquid steel very quickly and that carbon recovery to steel was inversely related to the charcoal volatile content. Initial larger scale work focused on the collection of wood, and preparation of low volatile charcoal which is required for steel recarburisation. Approximately three tonnes of charcoal was prepared at the Corrimal coke ovens of the Illawarra Coke Company. This charcoal was dried, crushed, sized and packaged in a form suitable for addition to 80 tonne liquid steel ladles.   The recarburisation trial was conducted over 30 ladle heats during June 2009. The charcoal was manually added to the liquid steel in 5 kg bags using normal plant practice. Conventional commercial recarburiser was also added to the liquid steel in alternate ladle heats. The performance of the charcoal was compared with the conventional recarburiser based on the carbon recovery to steel, hydrogen pick-up by steel and the rate of carbon dissolution into steel.   An analysis of the trial results showed that the charcoal performed at least as well as commercial recarburiser in carbon recovery and rate of dissolution but may have resulted in a slightly higher hydrogen content of steel. This is probably due to the higher moisture content of charcoal. The main challenges in the future include: increasing the charcoal density to improve transport and handling economics, securing a sustainable supply of biomass for the steel industry and developing a charcoal production industry so materials of suitable quality for both production and trials on other applications can be conducted.
