The principle of personal safety is as old as the human race. The application of this principle to industry is of much more recent origin, and may be said to be almost exclusively the product of the twentieth century. The enormous strides in technique and production mode prior to the turn of the century had been achieved without any real regard for the crippled human by-products of that expansive era. It was accepted that. accidents were inevitable and formed part of the price that must be paid for production. It was not until 1885 that the first Workmen's Compensation Act was passed in Germany making the employer financially liable for injuries suffered on his plant.With awakening social conscience came the first organised efforts to reduce accidents in industry. Early 19th century literature dealing with the development of powerdriven machinery and the growth of industry in Europe contains many references to the unsafe and unhealthy working conditions that accompanied the change-over from the home workshop to the industrial plant. By the year 1900, there were in Germany - and a little later in England governmental regulations dealing with the guarding of hazardous machinery. American industry, now the acknowledged leader in industrial safety, admits freely that when an organised safety movement commenced in that country, there was already a considerable amount of information available to them from European experience. Gas well tests were performed on 17 wells in the Roma area. The procedure used in the test programme incorporates an initial isochronal test followed by what is described as the "two flow drawdown" technique. The second flow of the two flow drawdown test was conducted for sufficient time to allow transient investigation of the surrounding reservoir. This combination of tests allows the evaluation of stabilized production capacity in addition to the determination ,of several important reservoir characteristics.It also provides a qualitative indication of reserves, by reflecting the presence or absence of reservoir boundaries within the drainage area affected during the test.

THE Australian States and New Zealand have for many years provided instruction in mining, metallurgy, geology, and their allied subjects through their Universities and Schools of Mines. Though such education has been provided at considerable expenditure, there is no legal recognition whatever given to the holders of degrees, diplomas, or certificates granted by the authorities controlling these educational institutions. Certain of the, Australian States and New Zealand require, however, that mine managers and other officials employed by the mining industry shall 'hold' certificates granted by their respective Mines Departments.The position at present is that each educational institution is practically a law unto itself, and therefore in many ways there is a want of uniformity amongst institutions all aiming at the same result the training of mining men. Despite the importance and usefulness of basicity in metallurgical slags, the optimum quantitative expression of it has remained elusive, partly due to the fact that the precise concept of basicity has not been properly clarified. The two basic approaches to the concept of basicity are the Lux-Flood, which perceives basicity in terms of the activity of the free oxide ion, a O2- , and the Lewis, which perceives basicity in terms of the ability to donate negative charge. The former has been almost universally adopted in the area of metallurgical slags, while the latter has been increasingly accepted in the field of glass chemistry. In this paper, some difficulties of the Lux-Flood approach are pointed out, including the need for indirect measures of a O2- , which have proliferated in recent years. Accordingly, it is suggested that the Lewis approach has a good deal to commend it, and that the quantification of it in terms of optical basicity is the best measure of basicity available, which should therefore be more widely applied in metallurgical slags than it currently is. The fact that there are intrinsic problems in evaluating the optical basicities for the transition metal oxides is acknowledged, and a new scale is recommended. The patterns of iso-optical basicity lines in ternary systems are shown to agree well with the pattern of iso-activity and iso-capacity lines under appropriate conditions. * Originally published in the Proceedings of MINPREX 2000, published by The AusIMM.

Drilling and blasting are an essential part of most mining operations, and are commonly major operating cost centres. The effectiveness of blasting can have a significant influence on all subsequent activities, and hence overall operating costs. Drilling and blasting systems must be compatible with the overall mining method, to minimise total costs and ensure operational efficiency. Selection of suitable equipment and techniques requires an understanding of the total operation, plus current skills in specialised technologies. This paper examines the contribution of drilling and blasting to total costs, including the balance between capital and operating costs. The use of computer modelling is discussed, to demonstrate how blast performance and costs can be predicted and alternatives analysed. Case studies illustrate how cost savings can be made in operating mines, and alternative systems evaluated to optimise new projects.

The total world steel production in 1998 amounted to approximately 780 000 000 t. The share of electric steelmaking was in the range of 35 per cent and is expected to increase further to over 40 per cent of the world's production within the next ten years. As electric steelmaking is primarily based on the use of scrap and as it is progressing more and more into higher steel grades the need for low-residual metallics will become increasingly important. Consequently, the demand for scrap substitute material will increase, reflected in the world wide spate of interest for DRI (Direct Reduced Iron) and HBI (Hot Briquetted Iron). The increased significance of DRI/HBI as a substitute for steel scrap has obviously emanated also from its comparatively lower and more predictable costs per ton and definable chemistry. In 1998 already 37 million tons of DRI/HBI were globally produced.

Stratigraphy of the Hamersley Province in Western Australia, featuring alternating units of banded iron formations and shales with contrasting electrical properties in a mostly gently undulating shallow-dipping layered geometry, is particularly favourable to airborne time-domain electromagnetic mapping techniques. Manipulated vertical cross-sections of modelled conductivity obtained from laterally constrained one-dimensional inversion of SkyTEM304 data enable the exploration geologist to interpret weathering profiles, shallow-dipping stratigraphy and steep structures, all of which are crucial aspects of bedded iron ore deposits genesis models.The Cobra Project is located 14 km east of the NNW-trending Menindee Fault Zone, which defines the western margin of the Hamersley Province, Western Australia. The region comprises an extensive plateau of Brockman Iron Formation cut by a series of horst and grabens with a regional dextral strike-slip component. The 150° striking horst and grabens and associated 060° striking conjugate faults have approximate frequencies of 400 and 2000 m, respectively, and control the bulk of the iron mineralisation. Syn to late 150° trending dykes in part intrude the faults.In the Cobra region, elucidating the structurally dislocated stratigraphy without closely spaced drilling is very challenging. Geological mapping is hindered by the paucity of mappable stratigraphic markers within the banded iron formations and kinematic indicators. Airborne magnetic and remote sensing data sets highlight the dense lineament network, but provide limited assistance in quantifying relatively small apparent displacements, or distinguishing faults from dykes with reasonable confidence.Interpretation of modelled conductivity cross-sections generated from laterally constrained one-dimensional inversion of airborne electromagnetic method (AEM) data offers invaluable insight where the quality of mapping or drilling is wanting. Subsequent targeted field checking and infill drilling validated the geological model interpreted from the integration of these data sets.The AEM technique alone cannot decipher the complex geological environments often present in the Hamersley Province but can facilitate effective iron ore exploration by focusing precious field time and assisting structural and stratigraphic interpretations in areas with sporadic and shallow geological data.CITATION:Murray, R, Neroni, R, Kepert, D and Bresnahan, J, 2017. The prospect of utilisation of phosphate ores which contain high P2O5 values associated with Al and Fe has produced a great deal of interest over many years. Processing options have generally been based on the utilisation of by-products which were required to offset the processing costs.   This paper presents a range of processing options which have been investigated at laboratory or technical scale on phosphate ores which predominantly consist of crandallite, CaAl3(PO4)2(OH)5.3H2O and millisite, Ca(NaK)Al6(PO4)4(OH)9.3H2O. Christmas Island (Indian Ocean) and Mt Weld (Western Australia) phosphate ores are good examples of such feedstocks. It is expected that these processes may also be applicable to such phosphate ores from other locations.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Ore-bearing intrusions in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) were examined from nine mines: Boshekul, Nurkazgan, Kounrad, Borly, Aktogai, Koksai, Baogutu, Tuwu and Erdenet. The intrusions are diorite, granodiorite and tonalite with SiO2 contents ranging from 58 to 75 wt per cent, and show mildly fractionated rare earth elements (REE) ([LREE]N/[HREE]N = 2.7–4.7) – light REE and heavy REE – and varying Eu anomalies ([Eu]/[Eu]* = 0.58–1.4). The ratios of Sr/Y vary from 7.9 to 115 and the contents of Y from 4.6 to 23.9 ppm. The parental magmas of the intrusions are intrinsically oxidised. Zircon grains in the ore-bearing rocks from large- and intermediate-sized porphyry Cu deposits show high Ce4+/Ce3+ ratios characterised by 65–422 at Boshekul (>4.1 Mt Cu), 76–480 at Kounrad (>4.8 Mt Cu), 90–280 at Aktogai (>12 Mt Cu), 80–250 at Erdenet (>11 Mt Cu) 74–370 at Nurkazgan (>3.9 Mt Cu), 100–210 at Koksai (>1.6 Mt Cu), and 71–340 at Tuwu (~2.0 Mt Cu). In two small deposits, the ore-bearing rocks display low values of Ce4+/Ce3+; Borly (0.6 Mt Cu) ranging from 28 to 158, and Baogutu (0.6 Mt Cu) from 29 to 113. The Ce4+/Ce3+ ratio of 120 distinguishes large intermediate-size deposits from small-size deposits. Open cut mining of the Black Rock chalcocite ore started in 1963. A ground movement monitoring programme was commencing in the early stages of mining when signs of instabilityof the western wall became apparent. Eventually 100.000 cu vd, of overburden Were removed beyond the rim of the western wall in an attempt to stabilize the slope. Subsequent decpenlug and mining till the final batter angle of 45 resulted in deterioration and mining was stopped 38 ft short in the ulltimte design deplh of 520 ft.Investigations showed that the geology of the western wall , was a major factor in the instability of this wall. A block jointed model was made 10 illustrate some of the pehomena observed. The upper amphibolite-grade mctasediments of thc rinaroo area, North Queensland, form part of a regional aurcole to the large Tinaroo Batholith and are the stratigraphic equivalents of the Hodgkinson Formation of gencrally low metamorphic grade. There is no evidence of any lithological unconformity.The higher grade metasediments have a more complex deformation history than is typical for thc surrounding region and this may bc due to one or a combination of two factors; an additional strain componcnt associated wilh the intrusion of Ihe Tinaroo Batholith, or a more marked finite strain response to the overall regional stress field within hotter. more ductile rocks.Four deformational events can be characterized within Ihc Tinaroo Area. Close to Ihe Tinaroo Batholith D1 and D2, arc so strongly developed that they disrupl the continuily of Ihe original Iithological layering. In the aureole region, D1 is strongly overprinted and its original fabric intensity is obscured, but both D2 and D3 display a mappable decrease in intensity away from the granite margin. These three deformations occurred during Carboniferous or early Permian time. D4 is later and only patchily developed.The broad, moderate pressure metamorphic aureole surrounding the Tinaroo Batholith is a typical of the CairnsCooktown group of Permo-Carboniferous granitoids. which usually develop narrow, lower pressure contact aureoles. Two periods of metamorphism are distinguishable. The first reached peak temperatures somewhat greater than 520°C, the second temperatures around 620-630° C immediately adjacent to the granite contact.Several cale-silicate lenses containing scattered scheelite mineralization occur within the area. Scheelite appears to have crystallized at the same time as the cale-silicate minerals, its appearance coinciding with the intrusion of the Tinaroo Batholith. Unlike many "skarn-type" scheelite deposits, the scheelite-bearing cale-silicates are Fe-poor, with no positive correlation between total Fe and W.

Renison Bell is on the Emu Bay Railway, midway between Zeehan and Rosebery on the west coast of Tasmania. The tin deposits in this area have been described by G. A. WaIler (1902), L. K. Ward (1909), H. Hermani (1914), and Hartwell Conder (1918), for the Tasmanian Geological Survey. The ore-bodies occur in the slates, grits, altered lava flows and tufts of the Dundas Series, and consist of fine-grained cassiterite disseminated through massive sulphides (chiefly pyrrhotite or pyrite), or through bodies of quartz and sulphides. Some of these bodies show a N.W.-S.E. strike, parallel to the strike of the tin belt, but others strike N.E.-S;W. or E.-W.The ore-bodies are of two types: (1) steeply dipping fissure veins,' spoken of locally as "feeders," and (2) flatter-lying bodies more or less conformable with the bedding planes of the slates (bedded veins), spoken of locally as "floors."The feeders range from 5-12 ft. in width, with occasional bulges as great as 4q ft. Their lengths vary from 100 ft. to several hundred yards, and they are known to continue to Clmsiderable depths. 'They dip steeply, generally at angles of 45° to 60° to the east or south.The floors, where they occur, 'are directly connected with the feeders, and are sheet-iike bodies of sulphide ore. The composite ore-bodies thus have the shape of an inverted L, or a T, according to whether 'the floor extends out from one side or both sides of the feeder. Most of the floors extend from the hanging-wall side of the feeder. Where erosion has removed the connection, they appear as separate bodies.The feeders as a rule carry more quartz and arsenopyrite than the floors, and are richer in tin. In addition, the cassiterite tends to be coarser grained in the feeders than in the floors. The floors, on the other hand, carry a greater proportion of -sulphides, chiefly pyrrhotite, and the grade of ore and grain size of the cas,siterite tend to decrease as the floor is followed down the dip away from the feeder, so that the outer and lower extremities of the floors may be too low-grade to work economically. The average grade of the ore worked at present is 0·9,0/0 tin. The slates forming the roofs of the floors are commonly much contorted and silicified,' so that they form hard rocks in which the contortion and shattering of the original slates are well preserved. Joints extending upwards, more or less at right angles to the roof of the floor, are occasionally filled with finely crystalline quartz, similar to that in the orebodies, and are often rich in tin, so much so that the slate as a whole may average 0·4% tin.Some carbonate gangue is present in all of the ore-bodies, commonly on the footwall side, and, in places it becomes an important constituent...

Review of the mining legislation in New Zealand has coincided with a number of radical changes. These include a redirection of economic management towards a more open and competitive economy; major reform of the state sector aimed at greater efficiency, transparency and accountability; a new environmental administration; and a fundamental review of policy for management of natural and physical resources. These changes provide an opportunity to develop a consistent and coherent approach in the minerals and related statutes that will achieve objectives of economic efficiency, equity, practicability and good environmental management.

In 1976 the Pitjantjatjara Council was established under the Associations Incorporation Act 1985 (SA), for the initial purpose of organising and bringing together three similar Indigenous groups. These members of the Pitjantjatjara Council of Central Australia were demanding land rights and to legally protect their traditional lands. The Land Rights movement was more focused on the South Australian Government that became more receptive to the general notion that Aboriginal freehold land could be attainable.For almost five years, Pitjantjatjara CouncilÆs intense negotiations took place with the Dunstan and Tonkin Governments culminating in the final passage of legislation by 1981. A bi-partisan approach by Government and opposition applauded by all South Australians for its mature and socially responsible actions, in line with the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 (Cth). Despite the similarities between South Australian and the Northern Territory Land Rights legislation, there still remains one obvious distinction. In the Northern Territory case, its legislation established æLand CouncilsÆ as statutory authorities that are responsible for the management and use of designated Aboriginal lands. On the other hand, South Australian legislation fails to include any reference to æLand CouncilsÆ as defined in the Northern Territory Act. The intention of establishing such æLand CouncilsÆ in the Northern Territory was, and is to provide legal, anthropological and other expect advisers that respond to the wishes and opinions of Traditional Aboriginal Owners. Negotiations between mining companies and Land Councils, will, after the granting of mining leases, monies are then transferred to those Councils being a percentage of royalty entitlements. While the Pitjantjatjara Land Rights Act 1981 (SA) (Act) does provide royalty arrangements to Anangu Pitjantjatjara (AP), a body corporate pursuant to the Act as a Landholding Body (and not as a æLand CouncilÆ), it does not provide any royalty payments for the legal and anthropological services by the Pitjantjatjara Council for providing essentially similar services as the Northern Territory Land Councils. The limited services by AP do provide complimentary services from other organisations û including the Pitjantjatjara Council. There are approximately 4000 Anangu members who reside on AP Lands and more than 1000 other Anangu members live near AP Lands in Western Australia and the Northern Territory. These people are defined as APÆs æTraditional OwnersÆ by virtue of their affiliation to portions of AP Lands. As a result, the depth and understanding of spiritual beliefs and customs are strongly present as it relates to the whole of the Lands. Most of these members reside at permanent communities that spread unevenly about the northern and south-western parts of AP Lands. In addition, there are numerous æHomelandsÆ where families and extended families have establish homes, with electricity and water supplies on those Traditional Lands (see Appendix 1 and 2 of this paper depicting the map showing AP Lands and also showing stunning photographs taken during late last year). All roads and airstrips are unsealed between communities and Homelands and the essential services to all communities are limited and costly to provide, and require continuous upgrading. Capital expenditure on infrastructure is sorely needed and alarming levels of unemployment is of serious concern. Tjilpi (older) Anangu members have continually discuss the urgency to provide employment and education for the future of their children and grandchildren while balancing the needs of maintaining cultural and spiritual considerations. It is thus a growing realisation by many Traditional Owners that long-term benefits occur as a result of exploration and production of oil or minerals. There are promising results from Primary Industry and Resources of South AustraliaÆs (PIRSA) Aero-magnetic Surveys on the Musgrave and Mann Ranges and soon to be completed surveys of the remaining southern half of AP Lands (see Appendix 3). PIRSA and mining companies û such as Rio Tinto Exploration Pty Ltd and Delta Gold NL û have been more conscious of the necessity for improving the dissemination of information to Traditional Owners and to AP members. With recent findings of large nickel deposits just over the border in Western Australia, there is a strong indication that discoveries may occur on AP Lands as similar geological information is present on the east Musgrave Block. Consequently there are concerted efforts by the legal and anthropological services of the Pitjantjatjara Council to arrange Workshops and Summit meeting to give extra information û particularly information concerning the true effect of large-scale mining operations û to members to properly consider these proposals. Pitjantjatjara Council will play a major role in any decisions effecting Traditional Owners and AP, and will ensure orderly and professional services when dealing with legal, cultural and sensitive matters. This paper addresses the historical and current relationship between Pitjantjatjara Council and AP, with an emphasis on mining operations on AP Lands. It argues that future economic and social development on AP Lands hinge predominantly on the legal recognition of the Pitjantjatjara Council for its ongoing role, responsibilities and protection afforded to AP and its Traditional Owners.

New 40Ar/39Ar dates of vein and wall rock adularia from seven epithermal deposits and one porphyry copper prospect help constrain the ages of mineralisation in the Hauraki Goldfield. Vein adularia from the Paritu region yielded a single 40Ar/39Ar plateau date of 16.315 ¦ 0.066 Ma. Five 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of three samples of vein adularia from the Opitonui deposit overlap within error to yield a preferred age of 13.149 ¦ 0.016 Ma. Two samples of vein adularia from the Night Reef at the Broken Hills deposit yield exceptionally flat 40Ar/39Ar plateaus, and all dates overlap within error to provide an age of 7.121 ¦ 0.010 Ma. Two 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of one sample of vein adularia from the Wharekirauponga deposit overlap within error to provide an age of 6.318 ¦ 0.061 Ma. Four 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of three samples of vein adularia from the Maratoto deposit overlap within error to provide an age of 6.411 ¦ 0.022 Ma. Two samples of adularia from altered wall rock at the Sovereign deposit yield three 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that range from 6.547 ¦ 0.021 to 6.806 ¦ 0.028 Ma. This suggests that mineralisation formed around 6.6 Ma, but the results are complicated because the adularia contains minor illite that post-dates adularia formation. Results from the Karangahake deposit are complex. Two samples of vein adularia yield three 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that range from 6.116 ¦ 0.116 to 6.901 ¦ 0.101 Ma, whereas one sample of wall rock adularia that contains minor late illite yields two 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that overlap within error to provide a date of 5.734 ¦ 0.041. The range of dates indicates that more work is necessary to understand the history of mineralisation at this deposit. Two samples of vein adularia from the Tui deposit yield four 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that overlap within error to provide an age of 5.714 ¦ 0.017 Ma. These results confirm previous work that indicates that the ages of epithermal deposits young southward in the Hauraki Goldfield. These results are also consistent with previously postulated different ages for deposits hosted in Kuaotunu Subgroup rocks in the northern goldfield (>10 Ma), and deposits hosted in Waiwawa Subgroup rocks in the southern goldfield (7.1 to 5.7 Ma).

Analysis of rock discontinuities, collected using a scanline method, has been undertaken at the Iron Duke open cut mine, on the southern margin of the Middleback Range in the Gawler Craton, South Australia. The iron mineralisation, which is a product of supergene enrichment of carbonate sediments, is located on the W (western) limb of a gently N plunging D2 macrosyncline. Mesofolds plunge shallowly to the NE or steeply to SE, suggesting two shortening events, of which the second produced significant macrofolds. Discontinuities include:faults and shears which display variable orientations, mainly striking WNW dipping steeply N; mesofractures or joints maintaining a well constrained orientation, dipping steeply S, subvertical striking E-W; and bedding surfaces which are folded about a gently N plunging axis. Through this example of the regional control exerted on local discontinuities, it is clear that discontinuities are not randomly distributed as often assumed in purely statistical approaches. Commonly for rocks of any age there is a distinct discontinuity pattern, reflecting the geological deformation history. If the controls exerted on local rock discontinuities can be determined and assigned a number related to their significance, the way forward is available to develop a site specifc knowledge base that can make realistic predictions for any position in a given rock mass. Such a procedure would involve assessment of the regional geology, linked to scanned discontinuities either via manual or automatic means. Recent advances in automatic scanning rock faces (eg by the I-SiTE Laser Radar) to determine discontinuities distributions, enable the rapid calculation of rock characteristics. This is a significant advance in rock engineering, providing a method of safe and quick collection of data. However it creates problems in the presence of an increase in the geotechnical data available, which should be assessed in the context of the regional geology. Although techniques are underway to analyse post-blast discontinuities, the next signifant potential advance in this area could be the integration of a knowledge based system to assess discontinuities ahead of mining, incorporating regional assessment and human intuition.

THE slide-rule, as a quick and convenient instrument for performing approximate calculations, is steadily growing more and more into favour with the engineer, and results obtained by it are considered close enough to enable him to satisfactorily dealwith a considerable portion of his work. To the surveyor, however, whose ordinary computations must be as precise as his measurements, the present makes of rule are insufficient, except for a very narrow margin of the scales and for rough work. Few will carry the rule when they can clearly see that it is unreliable for general routine, and the careful surveyor is inclined to look askance at those who do use it, recognizing the temptation there undtmbtedly must be to push it into work that the log book should be called upon to treat. From the fact that a surveyor's duties take him on the surface in all weathers, and underground in many wet and uncomfortable places, where the manipulation of a book of mathematical tables becomes both awkward and patience-trying, an efficient slide-rule must offer the mbst transparent advantages. Factors leading to the decision to use Joy Continuous Miners for pillar extraction in the Burwood Colliery are outlined. A detailed description is given of the Joy 1-CM-2 Continuous Miner, including the power supply to the machine, and the method of cutting coalfrom a face. Modifications found necessary in practice are dealt with.The Joy 10 S.C. shuttle car used in conjunction with the Miner, and alterations made to this unit, are then described, together with Ancillary units for the whole installation such as transformers, motor generator set, air compressor,_ cables for power supply and water supply for dust suppression.Special arrangements were necessary to transport the Miner and Shuttle Cars through the tunnel to the Victoria Tunnel seam, and the method of overcoming the transport difficulties is discussed. Manning of the Continuous Miner unit, and final preparation andsubsequent working of the pillars is outlined. Special attention must be given to maintenance of the machines.It is concluded that the combination of Joy Continuous Miner and Shuttle Car is an excellent method for removing pillars in the Burwood Colliery.INTRODUCTIONThis paper deals with the Burwood Colliery in the RH.P. Group in which some units are engaged in the mechanical extraction of pillars with Joy Continuous Miners.In 1941, an amendment to the Coal Mines Regulation Act of N.S.W. forbade the extraction of pillars by mechanical means unless with the express permission of the Minister for Mines. As this permission was not forthcoming, no mechanical extraction of pillars took place in Australia until 1954 As it was doubtful during most of this period whether mechanical extraction would ever come about, coal generally was won with a view to maximum extraction in the first workings, thus giving rise to centre gannon bord panels and 45° angle cut throughs as shown in Fig. 1.
