In the course of a study concerned with structural stability of precipitation hardening nickel base super -alloys after exposures to elevated temperatures, some interesting effects of hydrostatic pressure treatment on Rene were observed. The evidence presented below suggests that hydrostatic pressure treatment of the solution heat-treated alloy can affect the dispersion of the y' (Ni3Al) phase upon subsequent precipitation heat treatment and long time aging. Rene 41 alloy has the following nominal weight percent composition: Al B C Co Cr Fe Mn Mo Ti Ni 1.4 0.006 0.7 11.3 19.2 1.0 0.05 9.4 3.3 balance The effect of successive pressure, precipitation heat treatment, and long time aging on the microstructure of this alloy was determined by subjecting a number of alloy buttons to five different thermopressure treatments. Pressure and precipitation heat-treatment parameters are listed in Table I. Fig. 1 shows y' morphology* of specimens in groups I and 11. The problem of efficient reclamation of zinc base die cast scrap became interesting early in 1930. Die Cast Metal, as referred to in this paper, is a zinc base alloy with various proportions of aluminum, copper, magnesium, antimony and tin. Many attempts were made to work out some means of reclaiming the discarded die cast metal for re-use as new die cast metal. Difficulties in such reclamation were attributable to contamination by lead and tin from solder, chromium and nickel from electroplated coatings, and iron from iron inserts. This paper relates the experiments that led to the development of a specialized muffle furnace for the treatment of zinc base die cast scrap for the production of zinc oxide and zinc, and describes the development of the muffle furnace and the equipment now used commercially for these purposes. The Eagle-Picher Co. acquired all patent rights' for these developments from the International Smelting and Refining Co. in connection with their purchase of the East Chicago Plant. Zinc Base Serap Situation About 1935, the die cast scrap situation became increasingly acute for scrap dealers. This scrap was accumulating from dismantling automobiles and household appliances which contained die cast parts. Efforts to find an outlet for this type of scrap were intensified. The International Smelting and Refining Co. began to study the possibilities of a commercial process for the recovery of values from die cast scrap. At that time most of the die cast metal reclaimed was melted down in small kettles of from one to five tons capacity, the iron inserts being removed by skimming. The dross was skimmed off and disposed of as a zinc dross. The drossed metal was cast into slabs and was given the trade name "die cast slabs.". Distribution of the products produced by melting die cast scrap in kettles is shown in Table 1. American Process Experiments A method considered for the production of zinc oxide from die cast scrap was an adaption of the standard American Process of zinc oxide manufacture. Thus some die cast scrap was mixed with oxidized zinc materials and charged to Wetherill grates. The zinc oxidized to zinc oxide but, while the aluminum and copper largely remained in the residue, the color of the zinc oxide produced was impaired by copper contamination. As the proportion of die cast scrap was increased, liquation took place; that is, the metal trickled through the charge then solidified in the openings of the grates. French Process Experiments Several hundred tons of die cast scrap were purchased for test purposes and converted into die cast slabs. These slabs were charged into a French Process (horizontal retort) zinc oxide furnace with some electrolytic zinc. A satisfactory grade of zinc oxide was not produced. Distillation in Belgian Retorts It was then decided that, rather than attempt to use scrap die cast metal or scrap zinc for the production of zinc oxide, it would be advisable to redistill the die cast slab metal in a Belgian retort furnace. The opportunity to do so was provided by the closing of the zinc smelter of the Illinois Zinc Co. at Peru, Ill. Arrangements were made for the operation of a Belgian retort furnace for such redistillation purposes. The results of this experiment are summarized in Table 2.

(communication to the Secretary†):—The very interesting results obtained by Prof. Hofman and his assistants came to my attention when I had temporarily assumed charge of the metallurgical department of the Missouri School of Mines, and had found it, pending the completion of a new building, lacking a furnace in which to roast ore preparatory to the customary lead blast-furnace run. An attempt at lime-roasting had been already determined upon, but the use of a charge which would make a slag of definite composition was a new idea. The results following were obtained by Messrs. Aubrey Fellows, J. C. Long, E. R. Wash, and Dr. T. C. Tseung, under my supervision. IT will be recalled that the first professor of metallurgy in the United States, appointed in 1855, never really gave any instruction in metallurgy and gradually turned into a professor of mineralogy. Metallurgy was included with. mining in the early curricula, two students who took the B.S. in mining engineering from the Polytechnic College of Pennsylvania in 1862 wrote their graduation theses on the metallurgy of copper and zinc, respectively. Even after Columbia School of Mines established, in 1868, a separate curriculum leading to the Ph.B. degree in metallurgy, very few students elected it,* preferring to take the mining degree, since they received in its curriculum nearly all the metallurgical instruction they would have in the metallurgical curriculum. For many years a large proportion of the men who attained prominence in metallurgical enterprises had taken mining rather than metallurgical degrees. METALLURGY Clifton Sorby's study of thin sections of rocks under the micro¬scope, beginning in 1850, and its subsequent development by Zirkel and others, had made microscopic petrography a recog¬nized department of geological research as early as 1873. . It was inevitable that the idea of studying polished metal surfaces-¬under the microscope by reflected instead of transmitted light would occur to investigators. Sorby himself did it in 1864, and Adolph Martens and Floris Osmond may -be especially named among the many European workers who, by the late eighties, had so developed the, necessary techniques that they were able to photograph polished metal surfaces at magnifications as high

Many of the difficult operating problems of the preparation of coal for market, of sampling coal shipments and in the utilization of coal are caused by segregation in the coal mass. Segregation may be of two kinds: i.e., "size segregation," in which particles of the same size in a mass of coal containing a range of sizes collect together and "density segregation," in which particles of the same density or specific gravity in a mass of particles of varying density gather together. Mechanics of Segregation Size segregation cannot take place with closely sized coal. As the size range increases, the tendency for size segregation increases. Similarly, cleaned coal with particles of approximately the same specific gravity have very little tendency for density segregation. The wider the density range of particles and the more particles of different density, the greater the chances are for density segregation. The following discussion deals primarily with coal of a wide size range as screenings and of wide density differences as uncleaned or run-of-mine screenings. If a mass of coal containing particles of a wide size range is subject to the stream action of a moving current of water, the small particles are transported farther than the coarser. AS a source of mineral wealth, the larger islands of the West Indies have never had an enviable reputation. The Spaniards took possession of them in the sixteenth century hopeful that they would yield gold; but it was not long before they knew the rather rigid limitations of Antillean gold production and were seeking-and finding ---richer deposits of the precious metals in Mexico and on the west coast of South America. Although a great deal of wealth changed hands in the West Indian islands in subsequent years, the fact may be laid to the abundance of pirates and privateers and not to the richness of local ore bodies.

Burghoff and Blank1 have pointed out that the creep properties of hard-drawn coppers are closely associated with their individual softening characteristics and have further shown that the creep resistance of various types of copper is improved, under certain circumstances, by cold stretching. In the design of certain types of electrical machinery, it is important to have the creep resistance as high as possible; furthermore, short-time creep strength is important since in many cases stresses are large only during warming-up and cooling-down periods. In this paper, data are presented showing the effect of cold work on the short time creep strengths of various types of commercial copper under several conditions. It is shown that trends from short-time creep tests are evident at longer times. Materials Used in the Investigation The coppers used in this investigation were commercial grade and of two basic types, oxygen free high conductivity (OFHC) and tough pitch. Additions of silver in amounts of 15 and 25 oz per ton were added to each of the two coppers. The analyses of these six coppers are given in Table 1. Originally, they started as wire bars 4 X 4 X 54 in. A. square rod was made by hot rolling the wire bars to 9/16-in. rod in 8 passes. This rod was then cold drawn to 0.445-in.-diam rod and annealed for 3 1/2 hr at 1000°F. It was then cold drawn to 0.325-in. rod and again annealed at 1000°F for 3 1/2 hr. Hard square rods were then made by cold rolling to 0.257 X 0.257-in. rod. Soft wire was made from the hard- drawn material by annealing at 650°F for 3 hr. The final rolling was performed using a set of 9-in. grooved rolls revolving at 30 rpm, which produced square wires. Reductions of approximately 5, 20, 30, and 40 pct were obtained using several passes in the same direction for the large reductions. The 5 pct reduction by drawing was accomplished using a steel die having 2 parallel bearing surfaces. The die angle was 7 1/2 degrees and the wires were lubricated with a paste of ceresin wax dissolved in carbon tetrachloride. The speed of drawing was 13 fpm. Since work was done on only two sides of the wire simultaneously, it was necessary to rotate it 90 degrees each pass to insure uniform deformation. The room-temperature tensile properties of the various tempers are given in Table 2. The grain size of the an- nealed 0.257-in. wires was uniform and averaged about 0.035-0.045 mm. Experimental Procedures for Short-time Creep Tests Standard creep-test frames (Fig 1) were used for the testing. Special fixtures were designed to apply axial compressive and tensile loads to the copper wires. The compression specimens were 1 in. long and the ends were ground flat and parallel. The creep in compression was indicated by the movement of reference marks s-ratched on intersliding platinum strips attached to the moving heads of the fixture. The movement was measured with an optical micrometer fitted with a filar eyepiece on which the smallest division was 0.00005 in. The tensile creep specirriens were 4 in. long which provided ample gripping surface for the jaw-type grips. The platinum strips were attached to a one-inch gauge length of the wire and the creep measured as previously described. Operations ill Colorado oil fields in 1934 were not quite so extensive as in 1933, but much better results were obtained and one new oil field was discovered. In all, 26 wells were drilled, of which 9 were oil wells, 1 was a gas well, and 16 were dry holes. New oil production totaled 10,220 bbl. and new gas production totaled 33,714,000 cu. ft. This compares with new oil production in 1933 of 1238 bbl. and new gas production of 14,307,000 cu. ft. Dry holes in 1933 totaled 29 as conlpared with 16 in 1934. Oil was discovered in the Hiawatha gas field, Moffat County, in 1934 in the Mountain Fuel Supply Company's No. 4B Wilson, C. NE. NW. of sec. 23, 12N., 100W. This well was completed in a sand in the Wasatch (Tertiary) at 2304 to 2337 ft., after plugging back from 3797 ft. It made 20 bbl. of oil initially. No. 4B Wilson is the first well in the Rocky Mountain region to discover oil in commercial amounts in rocks younger than Cretaceous, and while it is not expected that Hiawatha will develop into an oil field of important proportions, eventually it may produce a considerable amount of oil as the gas pressure declines. Freeman, the English historian, said that he had learned from Macaulay "never to be afraid of using the same word or name over and over again if by that means anything could be added to clearness or force. Macaulay never goes on, like some writers, talking about `the former' and `the latter', `he', `she', `it', and `they', through !clause after clause, while his reader has to look back to see which of several persons it is that is so darkly referred to". He might have learned also from Macaulay that a preposition makes a' feeble ending for a serious statement. How often do you hear `the former' and `the latter' in conversation? Good conversation is a guide not to be dis¬dained. When you must use `the latter', do not confuse it with `the last'. Cheap labor, cheap fuel, and cheap transport are essential, the latter [last] being particularly important in base-metal mining. The apparatus may be used to determine such gases as hydrogen sulphide, chlorine, oxides of nitrogen and some others, as well as sulphur dioxide. In the case of the latter two, etc. The two last mentioned are "sulphur dioxide" and "some others". He should have stated which two, and he should have avoided that wretched phrase "in the case of ". Pinning may be partly prevented by use of chalk, oil, or turpentine. The latter [last] is best. I "Partly prevented" is a poor phrase. `Prevented! is a word that does not lend itself readily to modification. He means `checked' or `corrected'.

This paper outlines the trends in gold production since the discovery of America, in the world as a whole, and in the principal producing regions as well. World production climbed at an average rate of about 20,000,000 oz. per 5-year period until the record all-time output of 111,307,000 oz. in the period ending with 1915. Production fell off during the war period, but has been mounting since 1925, and will probably be nearly 100,000,000 oz. for the 5-year period ending in 1930. Total world production of gold from 1492 to the end of 1930, as closely as can be determined, is more than 1,061,000,000 fine ounces. More than one-half of this total, or about 575,000,000 oz., has been mined since 1900. In percentage of world production, the United States jumped from 4.8 per cent for the decade 1831-1840 to 44.5 per cent for the five years ending with 1855. This is the highest figure ever reached by this country, although, with the exception of the 10-year period ending 1865, it ranked first among the nationa from 1849 until the end of 1905. During the 5-year period ending with that year, the United States produced 24.7 per cent of the world's gold. The tremendous increase from South Africa following 1890 resulted in that country's becoming the largest contributor for the five years 1906-1910, a position it has held with increasing dominance ever since. Relegated to second place in the period 1906 to 1910, the United States produced nearly 20 per cent of the world's new gold until 1920. From 1921 to 1925 it averaged 13.6 per cent and since then it has continued to decline in relative importance, accounting for only 10.9 per cent in 1927. Final figures for 1930 may place Canada second among the gold producers of the world.

THE iron-silicon alloy series has always been one of the most puzzling among the binary alloys. Examining the well known mechanical properties of the iron-rich alloys only we meet the following situation: The ultimate strength and yield point of alloys worked and annealed under the usual conditions represent nearly a straight line function of the silicon content up to 4.5 per cent. silicon (Fig. 1). Starting at the ultimate strength of 35,000 lb. and at a yield point of 16,000 lb. for pure electrolytic iron, one reaches a maximum strength of 93,000 lb. and a maximum yield point of 74,000 lb. at 4.5 per cent. silicon. This corresponds to an increase in ultimate strength by 13,000 lb. per each per cent. of silicon added and nearly the same rate applies to the yield point. The data mentioned are taken from the investigation by T. D. Yensen,1 and while they do not exactly corroborate the results obtained by earlier investigators, they seem to be the most correct. Plastic properties of the alloys are controlled by a much more complicated relationship. Up to 2.5 per cent. Si, the elongation stays close to 50 per cent. (in 2 in.) and the area reduction amounts to 85 per cent;, a situation that forms the usual feature of all alloys representing strictly solid solutions. The plasticity of the latter is always nearly equal to that of their base metal. Beyond 2.5 per cent. silicon, the situation becomes much more complicated. Yensen observed an enormous drop in elongation and area reduction at about 2.65 per cent. silicon, where the first hardly reaches 10 per cent. and the second is still lower; he found, however, a considerable recovery in plasticity at about 2.8 per cent. Si and up to 4.5 per cent. Si it is represented by 20 per cent. for the elongation and 30 per cent. for area reduction.

Originally round tensile specimens of a eutectic Zn-A1 alloy develop elliptical cross sections during superplastic deformation. This observation, coupled with a detailed study of the microstructure and preferred orieniation, suggests that crystallographic slip and continuous grain boundary migration or re-crystallization are important processes during super-plastic deformation. In spite of the extensive activity in superplasticity1-15 and the numerous explanations proposed, no single model has had universal acceptance. It has been established, however, that the general requirements for superplastic extension of two-phase alloys include an extremely fine, stabilized grain size of the order of a few microns, a temperature about equal to or greater than one-half the melting point, a critical range of strain rate, and a similarity in the mechanical strength of the major phases. The proposed models can perhaps best be characterized in terms of the important phenomena associated with them. These phenomena include: phase instability,1 diffusional creep by volume diffusion3 or grain boundary diffusion4,5 slip and continuous grain boundary migration or recrystalliza-tion,= grain boundary Sliding,7-9,13,14 and dislocation glide.'5 In this paper, experimental observations will be reported which support a model involving slip and continuous grain boundary migration or recrystalliza-tion. Specifically, a correlation will be made between this model and the development of elliptical cross sections as originally round specimens are superplas-tically deformed. For the most part, superplasticity studies have been conducted with eutectic or eutectoid alloys. Probably the most thoroughly studied material has been the monotectoid Zn-A1 alloy.1,2,6,12,13,15 No attention to the eutectic Zn-A1 alloy has previously been reported, and the results discussed in this paper represent part of a general study of the superplastic properties of this alloy. MATERIALS The alloys used in this investigation were prepared by melting appropriate quantities of 99.99+ pct A1 and 99.999 pct Zn in air, mixing, and pouring into a water- cooled stainless-steel mold. Wet-chemical analysis was conducted with each heat of alloy prepared, using the procedure of Fish and smith.16 The composition of the eutectic alloy was 95.1 wt pct Zn. Ingots about 2 in. thick were rolled to 0.4-in. plate at about 300°C with a reduction of 5 to 10 pct per pass. Specimens were machined from the plate with the tensile axis parallel to the rolling direction. The specimens were round, with 0.150-in.-diam, 1.25-in.-long gage length, and 0.25-in.-diam threaded grip sections. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimens were mounted inside a uniform-temperature quartz tube which was surrounded by a double elliptical radiant furnace with a 12-in.-long uniform-temperature hot zone and a low thermal capacity. The tube extended through the top and bottom of the furnace and permitted rapid quenching of the loaded specimens when quickly filled with cold water at the conclusion of the test. The quench precluded any effects on specimen microstructure from a normal, slow cool. Constant stress was applied to test specimens by suspending a load on a constant stress cam of the type described by Hopkin.17 The design of this cam permitted application of a constant stress for elongations up to 200 pct. For greater elongation, approximately constant stress conditions were maintained by systematically reducing the load manually. RESULTS As part of an investigation of the superplastic properties of the eutectic Zn-A1 alloy, evidence was obtained for the development of elliptically shaped cross sections as originally round specimens were extended. For example, after an elongation of about 100 pct, a round specimen with an initial diameter of 0.150 in. became elliptical with major and minor axis of 0.128 and 0.88 in., respectively. The specimen shown was deformed at a stress of 500 psi, at a temperature of 285°C, and a strain rate of 2.28 x 10-2 min-1. The development of computerised mine planning has been hindered by the cost of processing the large data bases associated with mineral deposits and the inherent inconvenience of performing an interactive process on a time-shared computer. A dedicated computer is ideally suited for the purpose but reasonably priced micro/mini-computers have not had the capacity to store the volume of data or the processing capability required. Hardware development has cleared the way for the development of truly interactive mine planning software, covering the complete range of activities associated with mine planning, from geological assessment to short-term scheduling of operations, incorporating them into a single system using a common database. The integrated system, comprising software and dedicated hardware, adds previously unattainable speed, flexibility and clarity to the planning process because it has been tailored exclusively for that purpose.

THE Iron and Steel and Institute of Metals Divisions will meet jointly at the Statler Hotel, Detroit, Oct. 4 and 5, during the Metal Congress, Oct. 2-6. The Wire Association, the American Welding Society and the American Society for Steel Treating, together with the two Divisions of the Institute, constitute the Congress this year, and each body offers an interesting technical program. The National Metal Exposition will, as usual, be held concurrently. Visiting metallurgists will find themselves engaged in a bit of research not listed in the program-a time study of how best to exploit in a few days both the Congress and all that the place of meeting has to offer. For Detroit, the beautiful "City of the Straits," is third in rank industrially in the United States, and its great manufacturing plants offer much of metallurgical interest. This is especially true of the automobile plants which will be open to members of the various societies during the week of the Congress.

THE fact that certain types of ore-deposits have attained their present condition through the action of descending surface waters was, perhaps, first clearly pointed out by Posepny.1 The oxidizing effects of such waters were discussed by Penrose,2 and many papers dealing with this phase of the subject have subsequently appeared. That secondary enrichment of sulphide ores, however, might be produced by descending surface waters was not clearly understood until after the copper-bearing veins of the Butte district, Mont., had been carefully studied by the geologists of the U. S. Geological Survey, al¬though De Launay3 had suggested that sulphides might be transported from point to point and re-deposited in the zone above the level of ground-water. As a result of the study of the Butte district, two papers by geologists engaged in the work appeared within a short interval. The first by Weed,4 dealing with the enrichment of veins by later metallic sulphides: and the second by Ernmons,5 treating of the secondary enrichment of ore-deposits in general. In the latter paper it was pointed out that a typical vein of sulphide ores which has been subjected to the action of descending surface waters exhibits four zones,-an upper or surface zone, in which the changes have been mainly of removal, the products being typically oxides; a second zone of oxide enrichment, in which the less soluble metals brought from above have been precipitated as carbonates or oxides; a third zone of sulphide enrichment,
