This report compares the compressed air driven rocker shovel to the newly developed Warthog Non-throw development end loader. The two machines were compared on aspects such as safety, loading potential, energy efficiency and costs. The objectives of the comparison were to determine whether or not the replacement of the rocker shovel with the Warthog will be operationally and financially justifiable. The results from this study were obtained from underground observations and time studies on the machines, as well as consultations and data collection at the shaft and suppliers. This paper compares only the Warthog loader to the Trident 215 rocker shovel used at Anglo Platinum?s Brakspruit shaft and does not compare the other models of rocker shovels, which are fundamentally the same but will have different loading potentials and specifications. Cleaning times for the rocker shovel are based on underground observations at Brakspruit shaft. These times can be influenced by factors such as blasting practices, compressed air pressure and operator experience and skill. For this reason the times will most likely vary at different shafts. The Warthog cleaning times are based on manufacturer specifications and results from trial stages and therefore further work is required to confirm cleaning times achieved.

"Work in CSIRO with several Australian ores has shown that?by heating a high-phosphorus goethitic iron ore and then leaching with caustic or acid, the phosphorus levels in the ore can be lowered to a commercially acceptable value of around 0.08 weight per cent phosphorus (P). With increasing heating temperatures up to 1300¦C, the extent of phosphorus removal increased. This is considered to be associated with mineralogical changes in the iron oxide phases in the ore during the heating.Little phosphorus was removed from four high-phosphorus goethitic iron ores containing 0.12 - 0.16 weight per cent P in leaches with boiling water. However, leaches with sulfuric acid removed ten to 20 weight per cent of the phosphorus and leaching with sodium hydroxide removed even more phosphorus to produce leach products containing between 0.08 and 0.12 weight per cent P from three of the ores.After heating at 300¦C, leaches at a low pulp density of 0.5 weight per cent solids with 1 - 5 M NaOH and 0.1 - 1 M H2SO4 gave leach products with 0.06 - 0.09 weight per cent P. The lixiviant concentration required and extent of phosphorus removal depended on the ore. At a higher pulp density of 25 weight per cent solids, leach residues with between 0.07 - 0.14 weight per cent P were obtained.More phosphorus was removed from ores heated at 900¦C. Leaches at both the low and high pulp densities, with 1 - 5 M NaOH and 0.1 - 1 M H2SO4, gave leach products with 0.05 - 0.09 weight per cent P. However, the lowest phosphorus levels were obtained after heating the ores at 1200 or 1300¦C and leaching with 1 M NaOH or 0.1 M H2SO4. Leach residues with 0.02 - 0.06 weight per cent P were obtained, even from leaches at the higher pulp density of 25 weight per cent solids. Leaching tests on heated samples under heap leaching conditions at ambient temperatures have shown that phosphorus levels can be reduced to similar levels to that achieved in an agitation leach within ten days.CITATION:Fisher-White, M J, Lovel, R R, Sparrow, G J and Washington, B M, 2013. In this paper, the rutile TiO2 were prepared under air, Ar and H2 calcination atmosphere by low temperature hydrolysis using Tetrabutyl titanate (C16H36O4Ti) as raw material. Powers were characterized by X-ray diffraction, UV-vis diffuse reflectance and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The influence of the calcination atmosphere on the photocatalytic reactivity of rutile TiO2 for oxygen production was investigated. The photocatalytic reactivity of rutile TiO2 prepared under air, Ar and H2 atmosphere was compared under ultraviolet and visible light radiation with Fe3+ (c=8.0mmol.L-1) as electron acceptor. The results showed that rutile TiO2 prepared under Ar and H2 atmosphere had higher photocatalytic activity for oxygen production than that prepared under air atmosphere. The oxygen production rates under ultraviolet irradiation were 427.5, 378.2 and 357.0µmol.l-1h-1 respectively when rutile TiO2 was prepared under Ar, H2 and air atmosphere. The oxygen production rates under visible light irradiation were 78.2, 52.2 and 13.5µmol.l-1h-1 respectively when rutile TiO2 was prepared under Ar, H2 and air atmosphere.

Viscosity of liquid lead, tin, and Pb-Sn alloys has been measured by the rotational viscometer method in the temperature range from 50 K above their respective liquidus temperature to 823 K. The results are accurate to within ±1.0 %. The variation of viscosity with temperature followed the Arrhenius-type equation µ = µo.exp(Q/RT). The composition dependence of the isothermal viscosity and the activation energy for viscous flow have not shown anomalous changes at the eutectic composition of the Pb-Sn system.

Moving groundwater is generally recognized as the most adversarial condition for ground freezing. Moving groundwater can occur due to natural or man-induced groundwater flow, but either way may result in freeze formation difficulties. History has shown that if the condition goes undetected, catastrophic failure of the frozen shaft or excavation can occur. The success of ground freezing under potentially flowing groundwater conditions depends on an evaluation of the likelihood for this condition; an accurate and early diagnosis, with a careful evaluation of freeze pipe temperatures and piezometer water levels; and timely reaction to mitigate the possible delays. Successful remedial measures have included the reduction of ground permeability by modifying the soil properties between the freeze pipes with various kinds of grouting, or increasing the freezing effect by adding freeze pipes and/or the use of liquid nitrogen as the freezing agent.

"Lucky Strike and Menez Gwen are two hydrothermally active sites located along the border of the Azorean plateau, southwest of the Azores islands where the alteration processes affecting basaltic rocks are prominent (Costa et al., 2003). Here we report on a slabby brecciated rock, abundant at both Lucky Strike and Menez Gwen, composed mainly of basaltic fragments cemented by hydrothermal precipitates from warm fluid circulation system. Research reveals that hydrothermal alteration takes place mainly by replacement processes, in which silicification is dominant (Costa et al., 1997 and Costa, 2014).Petrographic observations, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), microprobe analysis, and mass balance studies made on basaltic fragments within the breccia show that silicification is one of the main processes resulting from hydrothermal fluid circulation. This alteration process leads to complete replacement by silica, in extreme cases, forming an impermeable cap that may contribute to the formation of sub-seafloor sulphide deposits, including examples in the geological past."

"Rapid expansion of urban areas dictates the need to expand/rehabilitate the existing buried infrastructure at the same rate. The technical challenges such as variable soil and rock profiles, high groundwater tables and limitations imposed by the built environment combined with present fiscal and schedule limitations necessitates the implementation of fast and cost effective construction methods. Since drilling procedures and equipment allow the construction of overlapped pile systems in almost all subsurface conditions, the secant pile walls have become a cost-effective shoring option for such infrastructure expansion/rehabilitation projects. The secant pile walls constructed in a circular plan layout to form a vertical shaft provide unique advantages since they act as a compression ring. Secant pile walls require stringent drilling tolerances be achieved in order to provide structural support and to work as a compression ring in addition to a groundwater cut-off wall.This paper outlines design methodology, installation procedures and verification techniques used for the secant pile compression ring for the Waterloo Landfill Pumping Station No.2. The secant pile compression ring had a 6m inner diameter with over a 20m wall depth and over 18m excavation depth. The details of subsurface conditions, analytical and numerical methods used in design are presented here. The details of the monitoring system are introduced and results of monitoring are presented and compared with analytically estimated and numerically simulated quantities. The results presented in this study are considered to be of interest to those involved in design and construction of vertical circular shafts."

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions4/ issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous .sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

This Bureau of Mines report discusses the electric-arc reduction of zirconium and hafnium oxides with carbon yielding a metal-metallic carbide mixture. The carbon to oxide ratio in the feed determines the metal to carbide ratio in the product. A sample of this product was produced -or testing as a feed for the deBoer iodide-dissociation process. A new technique for producing pure carbides is described, which uses the intense heat of the arc to volatilize the carbide. "INTRODUCTION The construction of frame houses (fig. 1) in recent years instead of the conventional sod hut (igloo) (fig. 2) by the Eskimos in the villages along the Arctic Ocean has increased the demand for fuel in these villages. The frame houses, which are not insulated against extreme cold and are difficult to heat, are equipped with Goal stoves. The well-insulated sod huts were heated comfortably with whale-oil stoves. In some years whaling is Door, consequently there is a demand for solid fuel.The Eskimo villages usually are on the sand spits at the mouths of rivers and points of land near the best fishing and hunting grounds. These narrow necks of land usually are sand bars that are not underlain with coal, and coal must be transported to the villages. Lack of development of coal deposits in the Arctic has made it necessary to import coal from the States, generally from 'Washington, to supply these villages. This coal is imported by boat and is received once a year. Its cost is, high, and development of coal deposits in the Arctic to supply these native villages should result in a considerable saving to the Government-operated schools and hospitals as well as to the natives.Early traders attempted to establish coaling stations in the Arctic, and the Eskimos generally know where the coal deposits are situated. A. reconnaissance of a number of deposits in the Arctic was made in the summer of 1946 by engineers of the Coal Division, Fuels and Explosives Branch, Bureau of Mines, and this report describes the areas investigated and suggests plans for the development of some of these deposits."

This circular is intended to present in brief form the statutory provisions of Pennsylvania regarding mining operations, in force at the end of the 1931 session of the legislature. lo reference is made to general laws which affect mining only incidentally in common with other subjects, such as the workmens compensation law. The statements have been condensed as far as practicable, and provisions not deemed of general interest, such as matters dealing only with administrative details, have been omitted. This circular obviously is not written with such particularity as to be of great value to the legal profession, but it is hoped that it will be beneficial to the mining industry in giving this information in a relatively compact form. At the end of each paragraph the statute from which it is derived is cited to facilitate reference to the text of the law. It is planned to publish additional circulars from time to time dealing with the mining laws of other States. Any criticisms of the form of publica- tion followed herein, or suggestions aimed at the improvement of future circulars, will be welcomed.

The safety of mining operations is significantly influenced by the in situ stress fields in which the mining excavations are created. From the point of view of planning of mining operations, the in situ stress field is a most important input parameter for valid modelling of excavations. Many in situ stress measurements have been carried out for mining and civil engineering projects in southern Africa over the past 30 to 40 years. A database of in situ stress measurement results and observations has been compiled. This paper presents results extracted from the database which are considered to be of particular interest to mining areas in South Africa. The database will permit the estimation of likely stress conditions in new areas of mining, provide a basis for evaluation of results from future in situ stress measurement programmes, provide a basis for comparison of observed behaviour with expected behaviour, and provide a source of data on which realistic design and layout analyses can be based. The information contained in the database indicates that horizontal to vertical stress ratios in the Carletonville, Klerksdorp and Rustenburg areas are significantly higher than the value of 0,5which is commonly used in mine layout planning.

As globalization continues, sustainability and social responsibility has become essential in foreign mining investment. However this global trend and the increasing acceptability toward the globalization process, viability and sustainability are not always achieved. Viability and sustainability of mineral projects is dependant on the social and political environment of the region where the mining venture is located and is based on the interaction between the mining entrepreneurs, national-local government representatives, communities, grass-roots groups and independent civil organizations. These are the organizations, which play the acting roles on the viability of mining projects and are the main source of socio-political risks for the project. Throughout the decision-making process to invest in a mineral project, socio-political risks are quantified using a set of measurable variables. Nevertheless, these risk measures should be dependent on specific industries. Two mineral projects, even in the same mining district, may have significantly different political risk profiles based on their own socio-political variables. This paper describes a methodology that takes into account local social and political variables in defining a project-specific’s political risk profile. This contrasts with more typical political risk measures that focus on the country’s overall risk profile. Mining operations must operate on a local scale necessitating the development measure that considers more local variables.

THE world's largest known oil deposit lies in northern Alberta. In fact, according to government estimates, the famous so-called 'tar sands' of the Athabaska region contain several times as much oil as all the other proved reserves of the world. S. C. Ells, of the Department of Mines and Resources, who has been the Dominion Government's authority on the oil sands since 1913, has estimated the minimum content of the deposits at 100 billion barrels(!). C. P. Bowie, of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, has published an estimate of 250 billion barrels(2). ?In comparison, the latest authoritative estimate of the proved oil-field reserves of the world is less than 35 billion barrels(3). Out of this tremendous total, perhaps 500 million barrels are commercially available at present-day costs and prices; the remainder must be considered a latent reserve to be used when development costs are materially lower and petroleum prices materially higher than they now are. Mean-while, the 500-million-barrel portion presently available contains more oil than has been found in all the rest of Canada, and constitutes one of Canada's great mineral resources. Although these deposits have been known to white men since 1788, when Peter Pond, the explorer, found the Indians stewing the oil out of the sand and mixing it with spruce pitch to caulk their canoes, they are only now coming into commercial production. The purpose of the present paper is to describe the deposits, their oil content, their present development, and the possibilities that seem to lie immediately ahead. For the sake of completeness and clarity, the writer has not hesitated to use or to paraphrase material that he has previously published elsewhere in discussing various aspects of the oil sands.

An economic, real-time probe drill monitoring system was developed for Metropolitan Water District’s Arrowhead Tunnels project to quantitatively evaluate ground conditions ahead of a TBM. This system digitally records hydraulic feed, rotation, and percussion pressures and calculates drill advance rates during drilling. These data are computer synthesized to develop a digital representation of the ground ahead, and the resulting “picture” of the ground is distributed to the project team to assist with tunnel construction decisions (i.e., targeting grout holes, optimizing mine-cycle lengths, and avoiding becoming stuck). The analysis and interpretation procedure has now been calibrated and refined using over 5,000 m (3 miles) of geologic face mapping data.

A comprehensive axial test program has been undertaken at the WASM Dynamic Test Facility on the performance of 20mm threadbar. The threadbar tests had a double embedment configuration, with variation to the encapsulation lengths, debonded length and surface hardware and fixtures to examine failure mechanisms. Performance was significantly affected by the collar embedment length and type of fixture nut used. Results ranged from thread shearing occurring between the nut and bar at 1kJ of energy dissipated, to control plastic deformation of a central debonded length dissipating 22kJ.

THIS is the story of the recent operations of the Standard Cyaniding Co., which owns the Standard mine, a low-grade gold property in sight of Highway 40 about thirty miles from Lovelock toward Winnemucca, Nev. The ore is mined by power shovel and cyanided after grinding to only 3/S in. A total direct cost of $1.24 was attained in 1941 on 600 tons a day. Mining operations ceased, under Government edict, in 1942, and only in recent months have been resumed. The operating difficulties of today are: (1) the high cost of supplies; (2) labor problems; and (3) Federal laws as interpreted and enforced by executive bureaus of the Government. Of these, the increased cost of supplies is the least important.

The construction of the La Joya hydropower plant (Costa Rica) was awarded by the Spanish power company, Union Fenosa, to the Italian Joint Venture formed by the companies SELI SpA and Ghella SpA. The project, located in a mountainous region of central Costa Rica, includes a 7.9-km-long head race tunnel having an excavation diameter of 6.18 m. A double-shielded TBM was selected to perform the tunnel excavation, which involved mainly volcanic rocks in variable but generally very weak conditions. The tunnel crossed long and continuous sections in completely weathered rock masses with no residual cohesion and with high water inflows. The paper describes and analyzes: The special methods adopted to overcome these sections with the TBM includ-ing face stabilization by chemical grout and foams as well small by-pass tunnels in the crown combined with TBM advance/support The grouting design and the grouting method that was implemented to meet the waterproof design specifications and restore the original groundwater level in the mountain The additional geological investigations performed to improve the knowledge of the rock mass in front of the TBM and the outcomes of these investigations The performance of the TBM in different ground conditions and on average along the entire tunnel Finally, the author’s comment about the possibility of implementing and improving the technologies experimented with in this project in future similar applications.
