"AbstractIn driven piles, the gradual dissipation of excess pore water pressure and consequently the soil setup significantly contribute to increasing the pile capacity with time. The question is risen that how the scale differences affect the stress state variations around the pile shaft and at the pile tip? Would the CPT predictions better correlate with End-Of-Drive (EOD) or Beginning of Restrike (BOR) conditions? On the other hand, are the proposed a and ß parameters for clayey soils mostly predicting the EOD or BOR situation? The main objective of this paper is to back calculate the a and ß parameters from CPT profiles, pile Dynamic Load Tests (DLT) at the EOD and BOR as well as Static Load Tests (SLT) and evaluate how they compare with those suggested in literature. Four precast 400 mm square concrete piles driven in North Azadegan Oilfield in Khuzestan Province were selected for the comparisons. CPT test results were available from the extensive geotechnical investigation at the study site. DLT tests using PDA were carried out at EOD, 1 day and 14-day BOR on all the 4 piles. All the piles were SLT tested as well. The UniCone software was used to estimate the tip and shaft resistances using 4 methods including the Dutch, Eslami & Fellenius, LCPC and Schmertmann. The results indicate that the a-method based on the proposed values in literature has predicted a shaft capacity of 90% of the 14-day BOR. This is while the ß-method has predicted a shaft capacity equivalent to 1-day BOR results only. Therefore, both methods have under-predicted the shaft capacities compared to real capacities measured after the significant soil setup in the study area. Two of the CPT methods have underestimated, one has overestimated and one has matched the estimated 60-day capacity."

The aim of this investigation was to reduce the cost of primary steel de-oxidation by substitution of aluminium primary de-oxidation with a practice that uses carbon. The cost of carbon is four times lower than that of aluminium. The application of carbon would directly result in raw material cost savings. Investigations were conducted at Iscor?s Newcastle steel plant on various steel grades. Specific production aspects were emphasized to ensure that the cost savings accrued would not create secondary expenses. These production aspects entailed: ?Yields on de-oxidation elements ?De-oxidation capabilities ?Alloying yields (Mn and Si) ?Carbon-pickup ?Nitrogen-pickup ?Temperature loss during tap ?Steel cleanliness ?Slag morphology. This project proved that carbon de-oxidation, apart from reducing de-oxidation raw material cost due to cheaper raw materials being used and lower consumption rates, resulted in steel that is cleaner and has lower nitrogen concentrations. Carbon primary de-oxidation has been implemented at Iscor?s Newcastle plant on a large range of steel grades, ranging from ultra-high carbon (> 0.60% C) to ultra-low carbon (< 0.03% C) grades. A net saving of between R100 000 and R200 000 per month was achieved.

Metallurgists and coal-washing engineers have used heavy liquids for years in studying the characteristics of ores and coal. By such means true separations can be made between the various specific-gravity increments in the materials examined. To use of heavy liquids has permitted determination of the possible grades of tailings and concentrates by specific-gravity methods on any particular size, and therefore the size to which the ore must be crushed to free the valuable material. The simplicity of float-and-sink separation and the high degree of efficiency attained in the laboratory are factors that commend the method for commercial concentrations.

This paper characterizes the copper cycle, that is, the flows of copper entering and leaving the African economy over a one-year period (1994). The major flows over the entire life-cycle of copper are examined; these include production (mining, milling and refining), fabrication of semi-products and manufacturing of finished products, use, and the waste management system. The results reveal that substantial amounts of copper (of order705 Gg/yr) are mined in Africa; of that amount, about 70 per cent is exported following processing, 18 per cent is utilized by African fabricators, and 12 per cent is discarded. The flows of copper products from African fabricators and product imports from other continents exceed product discards by large amounts. This difference, about 0.25 kg Cu/capita/yr on average, is added to in-use stock, largely as wire, plumbing tube, and in electronics. Some 65 per cent of the copper in discard flows is contained in electrical and electronic products, where it is relatively easy to collect and process for reuse. About a third of the copper discard flows known is recycled. The actual percentage is almost certainly higher because of informal (and unrecorded) recycling. Much of the remaining discarded copper is diluted into the municipal waste stream, where recovery and recycling are probably not economically justified. Introduction Inco is the major North American nickel producer. Initially based in Sudbury, Ontario, its past exploration activity was directed toward finding new nickel deposits. New nickel sulfide discoveries outside Sudbury have included Thompson, Manitoba; Shebandowan, Ontario; and Widgiemooltha in Western Australia as well as a host of nickel laterite deposits. The company is currently diversifying into other commodities, including gold. Inco&apos;s exploration department participated in uranium discoveries in Saskatchewan and chromite discoveries at Tiebaghi in New Caledonia. In addition, it found new gold deposits at Lupin, Northwest Territories; Crixas, Brazil; Hoyle Township, Ontario; and Casa Berardi in Quebec. Crixas and Casa Berardi are currently being evaluated by underground exploration. Figure 1 shows some Canadian Shield gold locations where Inco is or was an active participant. Base metal developments Base metal exploration in shield areas has been greatly eased by applying scientific studies. Archean nickel sulfide deposits have been found using komatiitic-flow models (Fardon, 1971). Volcanogenic massive sulfide model has been applied to copper-zinc deposits (Sangster and Scott, 1976). Such deposits were subsequently seen developing on the sea floor through black smokers (Spiess, MacDonald, and Atwater, 1980). Sedimentary processes were recognized early as important in ore formation, particularly in the southern hemisphere (King, 1976). And many ore deposits are now regarded as a simple part of the geological column (Stanton, 1960 and 1972). Petrographic work on alteration patterns in and around ore bodies was used to develop standard porphyry copper models (Lowell and Guilbert, 1970). Epithermal models for precious metals followed. Stratigraphic zonation patterns have been formulated for base metal deposits, including keel facies, ore facies, and cap or distal facies. Gold developments The work on base metal deposits naturally spilled over into precious metal exploration when the gold price was allowed to float on world money markets. Early work on elements associated with gold deposits, especially arsenic, tellurium, selenium, and mercury, pioneered more detailed geochemical work (Bagby and Berger, 1985; and Groves, Ho, and Houstoun, 1984). Geochemical patterns have been recognized around microfine gold deposits. And the study of gold precipitation patterns in modern geothermal systems has helped understand gold deposition. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, it was noticed that numerous Archean banded iron formations contained anomalous gold values. From this and other observations, the syngenetic exhalite gold model has developed. Gold deposits also occur along shears in some plutons such as the Belmoral mine in Quebec. This indicates the importance of epigenetic processes in ore formation. Shield ore settings Initial studies recognized that the major gold camps in the Canadian Shield were mostly in greenstone belts and found along "breaks," especially zones of faulting and sedimentation. Gill (1948) wrote, "Only recently, as a result of detailed mapping, has the importance of major schist zones such as the Larder Lake, Cadillac, Porcupine Creek, and Destor Breaks been recognized. These zones of persistent adjustment mark broad belts favorable for ore occurrence." The importance of shearing in ore location and regional greenstone stratigraphic position close to late sedimentary packages was clearly understood. And structural models have been further developed for some Canadian ore deposits (Hubert, Trudel, and Gelinas, 1984). In the Beardmore-Geraldton camp of northwest Ontario, the importance was soon recognized of fold noses in banded iron formation, as localizers for gold ore. Previous research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines demonstrated that nonionic surfactants increased the leaching rate of copper in the flask leaching of chalcopyrite with ferric sulfate if sufficient ferric sulfate was present. This research was continued by the Bureau in Part 2 to further explore the application of nonionic surfactants to the dump leaching of chalcopyrite. A polyoxyethylene lauryl ether was selected as the superior nonionic surfactant tested at 25° and 50° C. The addition of the surfactant increased copper leaching by 116 pct at 25° C and 1.0 pct solids and by 61 pct at 50° C and 0.5 pct solids at Fe 3+ concentrations greater than 1 g/L. At 0.1.0 g/L Fe 3+ and below, the addition of the surfactant produced as much as a 35 pct decrease in leaching. Each of the nonionic surfactants studied was found to be heavily adsorbed by a typical chalcopyrite ore, which poses a serious barrier to the application of nonionic surfactants in an actual chalcopyrite dump.

Morrison (Chairman, Dept. of Mining Engineering and Applied Geophysics, McGill University, Montreal, Que., Canada) - The discing of drill core has been a recognized pressure phenomenon for many years but only recently has an interest been taken in the mechanism involved. The work of Jaeger and Cook is referred to in the text. The authors have now advanced the study to establish, within certain loading limitations, a direct relationship between axial and radial stress at failure. This is an important contribution. In mines generally, where pressure conditions result in the spalling of openings, the faces of drifts and crosscuts, on scaling, usually show a concavity with respect to the opening very similar to the face of the drill hole after the separation of the stub. The same holds for shaft sinks. This suggests a similarity between the mechanism of the discing of core and that of the spalling of an opening, under pressure, to develop a more stable outline. This paper addresses the challenges of designing the underpinning of major sub-way station with 4 operating tracks. No. 7 subway extension crosses under the existing 42nd street subway station on the 8th Avenue line. Understanding the history of the original construction, of the current structures and their condition were instrumental in developing a feasible underpinning design that is integrated with the design of the new tunnels. The existing 8th Avenue subway station has a lower abandoned level. Several alignments and corresponding underpinning schemes were studied. The design allows new tunnel construction under the station without interruption of station operations.

As part of a larger study to identify factors influencing the practical operating life of wire rope used on large draglines in surface coal mining, field trips to operating surface coal mines were made during late 1975. Wire rope performance information was obtained from personnel at 13 mine sites west of the Appalachians. Seventeen pieces of equipment, utilizing bucket sizes ranging from 30 to 220 cu yd (23 to 168 m), were documented. Draglines at large US surface coal mines can be represented as 120 machines having 60-cu yd (46-m3) buckets, moving 1.8 X 109 cu yd (1.4 x 109 m3) of overburden during 6650 hours of productive availability per year. Based on the limited field study, the calculated downtime resulting from rope-related causes averages 105.6 hours per year for each typical 60-cu yd (43-m3) dragline. The total loss in production from this source alone is thereby estimated at about 25 x 106 cu yd (19 x 106 m3) annually. Although study findings did not reveal anything about dragline rope life that wasn&apos;t known or practiced by one operator or another, most operators can expect improved rope life by periodic review of their practices and by adopting one or more life-improvement measures employed at other sites. Since rope productivity was found to vary by a factor of five among the sites studied, considerable improved average performance is possible. As little as 10% overall improvement would increase national productivity by 2 million cu yd (1.5 X 106 m3) of solid overburden removal. Associated savings in rope costs would be some $2 million annually, plus a large reduction of labor-related expenses. This report outlines preliminary findings which may prove useful to many operators in extending wire rope life. Some of these modifications or adjustments in maintenance/operating practices would not require capital investment. During the field survey, no company was found which had tried cost reductions by using presocketed dump ropes, or dump rope sheaves that opened like a snatch block, so these are suggested as possible improvements requiring modest capital input. Data Acquisition During the field visits, mine operators provided rope life information about their machines. Some of the rope life data consisted of gross averages; other data was in the form of detailed records, including rope construction and manufacturer, cutoff and resocketing periods, end-for-end switching, and downtime for rope change-out. Trends of average hoist rope life and average drag rope life determined from the field study are shown in [Fig. 1] as a function of bucket size. The three lines on the graph have slopes of 1, M, and 1/4. A comparison of the data shows that hoist ropes moved about twice as much material as drag ropes prior to retirement, although more than a two-to-one scatter within each category is evident. As expected, the larger machines with the larger buckets moved more total volume of material. The four pairs of solid symbols represent those data for which detailed rope life histories are presented in subsequent figures.

This work aims to produce paints using granite waste, as a pigment, and compare their performance to soil pigments based paints, in terms of hiding power and abrasion resistance. Initially, the residue and soils were physically, mineralogically and morphologically characterized. For the production of the paint samples, an experimental model was defined, based on the variation of the proportions of pigment and resin. The proportion of water varied in each sample, in order to maintain the viscosity within a range considered ideal for application. Sequentially, tests were done to determine the hiding power and abrasion resistance of inks. It was found that, in comparison to soil paints, the granite residue paints presented greater hiding power. This result can be explained by the characteristics of the granite residue, which allowed a high nonvolatile content in the mixtures. With respect to abrasion resistance, granite residue paints showed less resistance than soil paints, possibly due to the granulometry of the residue that resulted in a greater roughness of film. In addition, none ink sample satisfied the minimum specifications prescribed in the Brazilian standards for hiding power and abrasion resistance, at the same time. This means that these inks, when used, will require more repair and repainting over time than conventional paints.

At the concentration plant of the Gol-E-Gohar Iron Ore Company (Iran) three 9m × 2.05m AG (Autogenous) mills (fixed speed) are used in parallel in a dry operation. The test works conducted in a scale down mill with a diameter of 1m indicated that conventionally used "deflector" type liners did not provide efficient environment for grinding. In this research, to improve the grinding efficiency, a new design using low profile end liners incorporating radial ribs of proper height was investigated. In order to determine an appropriate liner design at different operating conditions, a 100cm×10.8cm model mill was used for experimentation. The special design of model mill made it possible to increase the radial ribs height in steps of 6mm up to 18.5mm. The transparent end of the mill enabled accurate trajectory determination by image analysis. The results indicated that the new lower height profile deflectors and 15.5mm-height (14.5cm in industrial scale) radial ribs improved the mill performance while avoiding excessive pressure drop across the mill and wear on the liner. The image analysis showed that the use of new liners increased the distribution of coarse particles across the mill cross section from 28% to 35%. A new liner design was proposed by decreasing the number of liners in each slice from 5 to 4 pieces. The thickness of the inner head liners reduced from 45cm to 30cm and the outer deflector liners replaced by radial ribs. The distance between the feed and discharge inner head liners increased from the original 115cm to 145cm which increased the effective length of the mill by 26%. The new design reduced the weight and volume of end liners by 9% and 23%, respectively. It was predicted that the new liners design increases the mill throughput by 10% and reduces the metal consumption by 20%.

Active geothermal systems occur widely in Sumatra and in the Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ) ofNew Zealand. There are also many occurrences of epithermal gold mineralisation in Sumatra, some of which are economic. Minor sub-economic occurrences of gold have been reported in the TVZ but none have yet been mined. There are both similarities and differences in the nature of the active geothermal systems and mineral deposits in Sumatra and New Zealand, which can be systematically related to the tectonic setting. The thicker crust and consequent predominance of silicic volcanism in New Zealand leads to hydrothermal systems which are little eroded and with limited lateral outflows. The systems in Sumatra are of mixed character, with some of the characteristics of those in andesitic island arcs such as Java or the Philippines, e.g. a higher proportion of systems with identifiable acid magmatic volatiles, a greater potential for deep erosion and lateral outflows than in New Zealand; but modified by the more oblique component of subduction and thickened crust so that some are localised in volcano-tectonic depressions and consequently have high piezometric levels of primary hydrothermal fluid. The unusual occurrence of calcic zeolites in veins associated with gold mineralisation in Sumatra is thought to be indicative of æsatelliteÆ boiling zones along de-gassed hydrothermal outflows.

IN 1945, Illinois produced 75,210,000 bid. of oil, or 4.4 percent of the total for the United States, and ranked sixth in the nation in oil production for the third consecutive year. Production decreased about 3 per cent from that of 1944, when the total Illinois production was 77,413,000 bbl. This is the smallest percentage of decrease in production in the state for any year since a peak was reached in 1940. Daily average production for 1945 was approximately 206,000 bbl. The first Report of Investigations of the present series (No. 4562) was on the fundamental properties of lead compounds, and the manner in which they set limits to the richness of lead products treated in the usual sintering-blast furnace units. These properties of the compounds were emphasized, as&apos; it was desired, also, to learn the limitations of smelting the same compounds in present ore hearth practice; the hearth has a competitor in these "usual" units, even with the rich lead feeds best adapted for the hearths. Operating conditions that were followed in older metallurgical processes, when rich products, were treated, were outlined. The second report of the series (R. I. 4563) was on the development of the ore hearths of the types now used in the Tri-State from the viewpoint of the features, functions, and dimensions of the earlier hearths that had been most changed. Experimental data, for both well and poorly desulfurized charges being considered, were given to show the relative changes in the sizes and compositions of the charges after they were added to the ore (Scotch) hearths. A general picture was given of the charge column and of the conditions prevailing there when the operation was satisfactory. In this third paper, the composition of the gases prevailing in the charge column at various elevations will be correlated with what has been learned of the nature of the charge column in order to trace the steps of operation by which lead sulfide is converted into metallic lead. The metallurgical factors that govern operation and the lines along which improvements may be made will be noted.

I n the simplest application of a shock tube initiation system, the tubing acts as a “relay line” which passes a detonation signal from borehole to borehole. When the signal arrives at each borehole, it causes the detonator attached to it to fire. Such a single path constitutes a progressive series where each unit must function properly in order to activate the following units. Any application error, malfunction, or mistake in connecting any surface unit will stop the progression of the detonation signal through the system and result in a “cutoff” or misfire of the following charges.

The Mid-Tennessee Zinc (MTZ) mines, comprised of the Gordonsville, Elmwood, and Cumberland sites, last operated 4 years ago and are undergoing rehabilitation to begin production in 2008. The mines utilize a random room-and-pillar mining method that results in complex ventilation networks. Upon decommissioning, the mechanical ventilation units were removed and disposed of and several shafts sealed. In an effort to re-open the mines and operate in compliance with imminent Mine Safety Health and Administration (MSHA) diesel particulate matter (DPM) regulatory limits of 160TC µg/m3, a new ventilation system was required. The new ventilation system was developed primarily based on the diesel equipment required to meet production. Particular emphasis was placed on the DPM, diesel equipment utilization, main fan sizing, and fan locations to enable the mines to meet MSHA?s ventilation requirements in a cost efficient manner.

"Deep foundations utilize the varying soil conditions to provide the most cost-effective or practical scope for a given jobsite. Once the scope has been determined and the engineering applied, the element can be installed and tested to determine if it is suitable. QA/QC programs are vital for the assurance that the element designed by the engineer has not only been properly constructed but that the design assumptions are confirmed. The two deep foundation elements referenced are drilled displacement piles (DDP) and micropiles. Each of these elements allows for large loads to be distributed deep into the subsurface geology. Having the technology and ability to monitor the tests in real-time can be beneficial to a contractor in determining if the design is adequate or if adjustments need to be made on future piles. The proper QA/QC guidelines for installation and monitoring need to be in place to ensure that an accurate interpretation can be made on the pile. This paper discusses the typical testing and the positive results that the author has encountered using the latest advances in strain analysis.KEY TERMSDrilled Displacement Piles:A deep foundation system that has the ability to shed load into the geology through shaft resistance as well as tip resistance, similar to drilled shafts. This pile element is unique in that it has a consistent pile section and thus a consistent modulus of elasticity.Micropile:A deep foundation system used in applications where the foundation lies over material not suitable for a spread footing and the ideal soil stratum is deep below the foundation. Micropiles will have two different cross-sections consisting of a cased section and an uncased section. For this reason, this pile type requires additional analysis when computing stress-strain relationships.Geokon Strain Gauges:Instrumentation such as Models 4911A-4911 Vibrating Wire Strain Gauges ( known as Sister Bars) are designed to be embedded in grout and calculate loads based on the change on grout strain over a period of time.Stress:A pile element is under a compression (axial loading) load when a force acts along its axis and is normal to the plane of the section. The corresponding stress the pile is experiencing is described as a normal stress. The stress is obtained by dividing the magnitude of the load distributed over the cross-section by the area of the pile cross-section, as shown in Eq. 1."
