U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel studied the 33,900-acre Silver Peak Range North Wilderness Study Area (NV-060-338), in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The area studied lies between the towns of Silver Peak and Dyer, about 40 miles southwest of Tonopah, in Esmeralda County, Nevada. There are no producing mines in the area studied. However, development of Sunshine Mining Company?s Sixteen-to-One silver-gold mine, located in the Silver Peak mining district near the eastern edge of the study area in the early 19801s, has stimulated recent interest. The Sunshine Mining Company claimed two sites within the study area in 1985. Also, Intermountain Resources, Incorporated, located a group of claims at a prospect along the west side of the study area in the Dyer mining district, and in 1986, began drilling. Other claimants are holding two other claim groups by assessment. At the five currently (1987) held sites, precious metals occurrences are being investigated. There are no patented mining claims or mineral leases in the study area.

Several economic factors have caused the surface mining industry to require large-capacity shovels and trucks for efficient, high-production, low-cost operations. Some of those factors include technological advancements in equipment, commodity market depressions, increased labor and maintenance costs, contractural obligations and harsh operating conditions. The difficult operating conditions in surface mines, however, pose challenges to the use of high-capacity equipment. They include space limitations, weak over-burden, and weathered soils and rocks. So mining companies face major challenges in selecting appropriate shovels to meet the technical, operating, safety, environmental and economic requirements of their mines.

"There has been considerable output over the last three decades from the social sciences concerning man and his working environment. In the mining industry at large, however, authoritarian, hierarchical control systems remain the norm, and it can be argued that something less than optimum effectiveness in terms of both productivity and worker satisfaction has resulted.Recently (/975), Campbell Chibougamau Mines Ltd. devised a most interesting organization and incentive system that links the underground production of a standard ton of mined output at controlled grade to an incentive payment scheme. A parallel scheme in the mill complex is based on maximizing recovery of copper and gold from available feed. A key part of both minsystems is the formation of groups who have considerable autonomy, particularly when compared to the still prevalent traditional mining industry relationships between the worker and supervisory levels.This paper traces the development of Campbell Chibougamau's system . Attention is drawn to qualitative and quantitative measures of the success of the method through the commentary of those miners involved in the scheme, and by reference to the favourable records on productivity, absenteeism, safety, turnover and grievance activity.IntroductionPyramidal or hierarchical management control systems, coupled to piece-work incentive schemes, predominate throughout Canada's underground mining industry. Although specific details of such systems vary from site to site, they , are generally understood and accepted as fact by the majority of the work force.Normally, a front-line supervisor (shift boss) directs a number of workmen and assigns them to tasks and working locations commensurate with their abilities, knowledge, training and skills. This front -line supervisor may direct or supervise from as few as 12 to as many as 75 or more workmen. He issues orders according to his assigned production objectives and ensures that these directions are fulfilled in accordance with standard mine practice . Several shift bosses are usually directed by a mine foreman or mine captain. The mine captains report to a general foreman or directly to the mine superintendent or his assistant, depending on the size and scope of the operation."

Tasks during Phase I of this contract effort were performed in four principal functional areas. These were geology, hydrology, reclamation and mining. Data were gathered from literature reviews, mine visits, survey of manufacturers, consultation with government agencies, and unpublished or private communications with contractors and consultants. The data collected were analyzed for omissions or inaccuracies, then organized into tables, graphs and flow charts to provide a concise body of technical and cost data suitable for the engineering analyses required in Phase II of this contract. Maps illustrating estimated grade and thickness of the oil shale were prepared, some of which are included as exhibits to this report. A preliminary mine layout was performed to test the completeness of the collected data.

At Copper Refineries Pty. Ltd., Townsville, two reverberatory furnaces of 420 tonnes capacity are used to melt 210000 tonnes/year of copper for subsequent anode casting. When the refinery commenced production in1959, these furnaces were of 300 tonnes capacity. The original furnaces featured a silica brick hearth, magnesite and chrome magnesite side 'walls, and a sprung silica brick roof, but were unsatisfactory because of thelow refractory life and high costs. With continuous expansion in production and the incentive to increase furnace life and capacity the design of these furnaces has changed greatly since that time.The present furnaces feature all basic brick, a flat suspended basic brick roof, very extensive use of watercooled copper sections, and are of substantially increased (420 tonnes) capacity. Particular attention has been concentrated on high wear areas such as the taphole, side walls, and charging door jambs. Each furnace in its 24 h cycle, is charged, the copper melted, impurities skimmed off, metal "poled" prior to casting, and cast.The service condition during each of these operations is important in considering furnace refractory life.The improvements in operating practices and furnace 'construction which enabled the capacity of the furnaces to be increased are discussed. The life between major repairs to side walls has increased from 90 charges to300 charges.The scope for future improvement is considered and areas for development are suggested.

Prior to 1916, thickening was an art, and any accurate decision as to what size of machine to install to handle a given tonnage of a specific ore must have been one of those intuitive conclusions, based on both intimate and extensive acquaintance with thickners and ore pulps. Then in 1916 "knowledge of acquaintance," became "knowledge about" with the publication of the Coe and Clevenger paper.' The unit operation of thickening had graduated to the status of an engineering science. The fundamental similitude relationships for the two major phases of the operation were defined so clearly that batch tests on models as small as liter cylinders could serve to specify protypes as large as 325 ft in diameter.

A linear motor properly wound can serve as a mechanism for separating paramagnetic sulphide minerals, like pyrrhotite, from other sulphides and associated gangue minerals. The effectiveness of separation depends on the energising current of the separator, the frequency of the ac cycle, and the particle size of the minerals. The speed of travel of the minerals over the surface of the separator is also a function of particle size, and appears to be constant. The movement of pyrrhotite, magnetite and iron filings of comparable size fraction (150 ¦m +74 ¦m) on the linear motor surface has been observed using a cine camera. An attempt, has been made to give a theoretical basis for the movement of the particles by calculating the minimum electrical energy required to move them. Further, the rate of decay of magnetic moment of the particles has been estimated for magnetite and it has been found that sufficient residual magnetism existed in the particles after they had been exposed to the first half of an ac cycle for them to have like polarity with the second half of the cycle. The particles are therefore repelled from the motor surface every second half of the cycle. This repulsion due to remanent magnetism is the probable cause of particle movement over the linear motor surface.

Narrow vein metalliferous mining in the UK has a long history, but there are only two small gold operations at present (Clogau and Gwynfynydd). Four further gold properties are at various stages of evaluation (Calliachar, Cononish, Curraghinalt and Maestryfer). The South Crofty tin mine closed earlier in the year. Taking the third meridian as the eastern boundary of proved payable auriferous country, there is a stretch of country, nearly 600 miles in width, in which no appreciable amount of gold has yet been discovered. Many prospectors have attempted to .penetrate or traverse it, but comparatively few have thought it worth while proceeding with the examination.The desolate stretch of waterless desert-the very few and insignificant outcrops through the sand and the almost total absence of feed for horses have, combined, presented such a barrier as to preclude prospecting. The few who have traversed the country are eloquent in denunciation, yet their investigations, necessarily hurried, are not quite satisfactory. The absence of water utterly debars a thorough examination being made. Gold may exist in quantity, yet it would have to be extraordinarily plentiful to render its obtaining profitable. Too fantastic is the idea of its ever being a mining district; shifting sand to traverse, utter absence of wood and water render the notion absurd. Likely looking belts occur, but these in all "cases are small and remote from water. Gold has been obtained from likely look ing quartz reefs, but only by fire assay, and then but a few do to the ton. Without wishing to be pessimistic, I would unhesitatingly declare that east of the third meridian, and between the parallels 25 and 30 degrees in West Australia, there is no gold in payable quantities.

The United States Bureau of Mines has engaged in a study of the conditions under which coal mine accidents, resulting in the loss of life, limb, or time to the injured person, occur from falls of roof and coal. This publication is devoted to the results of a study conducted in the coal mines of the Book Cliffs and Wasatch Plateau coal fields of Utah. To show the necessity of this study, a statement of the fatalities that have occurred during the period 1928-1930, inclusive, in the bituminous mines of the United States and of Utah, is presented (Table 1), followed by a brief description of this Utah district, its coal beds and immediate roof, thickness of cover, dip of coal beds, methods of mining, supervision, roof testing and timbering for roof support, all of which are factors in any plan devised for preventing accidents from falls of roof and coal.

The Bureau of Mines, at its Rolla Metallurgy Research Center, has devised methods for separating and reusing the major portion of waste plastics discarded in urban and industrial refuse. Waste plastic concentrates from a local collection drive, recycling center collections, urban refuse pilot plants, and the secondary metals industry were separated into three major thermoplastic families--polyolefins, styrenes, and vinyls--based on differences in density using a Bureau-designed sink-float-elutriation hydraulic separator. Other separation methods and systems such as air classification, jigging, liquid media, screening, and electrostatics were studied. Vinyl plastics contain up to 50 percent HC1. It was found that over 90 percent of the HC1 in vinyls can be recovered as usable hydrochloric acid by pyrolysis at 350° C. The remaining pyrolysis products which had heats of combustion in excess of 12,000 Btu/lb, could become valuable as a future source of energy. A characterization study conducted on eight chopped wire insulation wastes from secondary copper and aluminum processors showed that most wastes contained 2 to 7 percent residual metal and large percentages of vinyl. The residual metal content of some of these wastes was lowered to 0.1 percent and the vinyl portion segregated using various separation techniques. The research also suggests ways in which reclaimed thermoplastics may be fabricated into useful products.

"A mineral resource royalty is payment to the holder of mineral rights for the utilization of the mineral resource. In South Africa, this payment is made to the State as holder of the mineral rights (The Mineral and Petroleum Resources Royalty Act of 2008). The principle purpose of this research paper is to identify if the State is benefitting from the mineral resource royalty by considering its impact on seven individual Witwatersrand gold mines.For this study, a simple financial optimiser model was created in Microsoft Excel that links the ore flow, block listing and the cash flow (excluding or including the cost of the mineral resource royalty). Mixed integer linear programing (the Excel Solver function) is utilised to optimise either profit or NPV (at 9% and 12%) by adjusting the cut-off grade.The impact on each of the seven mines mine was different but overall R7.9 billion is estimated to be paid in mineral resource royalty over their expected remaining lives. Due to the cost of the mineral resource royalty and increasing the cut-off grades, the total revenue decreases by R10 billion. A significant portion of this lost revenue would have been paid to the State in the forms of other taxation including company income tax which decreases by R2.8 billion. It is recommended that an industry wide investigation be conducted to determine if the resource royalty is adding to the State’s revenue, or destroying value including premature job losses. IntroductionTaxation of mining companies has become a very topical subject in the context of the postapartheid South African economy. There have been increasing calls for equitable re-distribution of mineral asset wealth for the benefit of all South African citizens and not just to an elite few. As part of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MRDPA) of 2002, the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Royalty Act of 2008 was introduced and came into effect in 2010 (South African Revenue Services, 2008). A mineral royalty is payment to the holder of mineral rights for the utilization of the mineral resource. In the case where the holder of the mineral right is the State, then this payment is made to the State (Cawood, 1999). Studies on the potential impact of the mineral resource royalty on the minerals industry have been conducted during the formulation of the Act and subesquently. These include Cawood and Macfarlane (2003), who suggested a cap of no more than 3% (Cawood and Macfarlane, 2003), as well as Cawood (2011), who predicted rising cut-off grades and thus reducing mineral reserves. In 2013, Grobler completed a Masters in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at the University of Pretoria and concluded that the impact of the mineral resource royalty on the economy is positive. She stated that the royalty has caused operating expenses to increase, but this does not appear to be significant. Furthermore, she stated that the royalty has not affected the way the mining industry operates (Grobler, 2014)."

Oxyfuel combustion is currently one of the principal technological options being considered for capturing carbon dioxide from pulverised coal power plants. In oxyfuel combustion, coal is burnt in a mixture of recycled flue gases and added oxygen instead of in air. In principle this yields a flue gas containing only carbon dioxide, water vapour and small amounts other impurities. Oxyfuel combustion is superficially similar to combustion in air, but there are inevitable differences. This paper describes ignition tests on pulverised coal suspensions using a suite of coals of different rank and from different countries of origin and over a range of oxygen and coal concentrations of interest for oxyfuel combustion. The ignition tests were carried out using the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 20-litre explosion chamber. The purpose was to determine how easily the various coals ignite and burn in mixtures of O2 and CO2 compared to their combustion in air. The residual char volatile and ash contents for the ignition residues were measured using a thermogravimetric analyser (TGA), allowing Q factors (i.e., enhancement in apparent volatile yield due to higher heating rates and/or heterogeneous reactions) to be determined and compared. An ignition index has been derived from the explosion and char data. This index has been used to rank low volatile coals for ignition propensity in air. The results show that to obtain ignition and combustion comparable to that in air, the oxyfuel O2-CO2 gas mixture must contain over 30% O2. Keywords: CO2 capture, combustion, pyrolysis, oxyfuel.

ABSTRACT: A three dimensional constitutive law for swelling rock is presented. It can be applied to the osmotic swelling of mudstone as well as to the swelling of rocks containing anhydrite. It describes the development of time-dependent strains and stresses due to swelling considering elastic and viskoplastic behaviour. Furthermore an anisotropic swelling behaviour can be considered. This constitutive model was implemented within a numerical computation program according to the finite element method and calibrated on the basis of the results of measurements in the investigation drift of the Freudenstein tunnel which is completely located in the unleached Gypsum Keuper. A parameter combination could be found which results in a good agreement between numerical solutions and results of measurements. Therewith an analysis procedure which enables the design of tunnels in swelling rock is available. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird ein dreidimensionales Quellgesetz vorgestellt, das nach derzeitigem Kenntnisstand sowohl auf das osmotische Quellen von Tonsteinen als auch auf das Quellen anhydrithaltiger Ton- beziehungsweise Schluffsteine anwendbar ist. Das Stoffgesetz wurde in ein Finite-Elemente-Programm implementiert und anhand von Meßergebnissen des im unausgelaugten Gipskeuper liegenden Untersuchungsstollens des Freudensteintunnels kalibriert. Es ist gelungen, eine Kennwertkombination zu finden, mit der alle Meßergebnisse gut beschrieben werden können. Damit steht ein Bemessungsverfahren für Tunnel in quellfähigem Gebirge zur Verfügung. RÉSUMÉ: Dans l'article présent un loi de gonflement à trois dimensions est présenté, qui peut être appliqué aussi bien au gonflement osmotique de l'argile compactée q'au gonflement de l'argile compactée ou du limon compacté contenant de l'anhydrite. Le loi de comportement était implémenté dans un programme numérique d'éléments finis et calibré avec des résultats de mesures de la galerie de recherche du tunnel de Freudenstein, situé dans le Keuper de gypse non lessivé. On est réussi à trouver une combinaison de paramètres avec laquelle tous les résultats de mesures peuvent être bien décrits. Par ce moyen, une méthode de dimensionnement existe pour des tunnels dans de la roche capable de gonfler.

"The mission of the Respirable Dust Center is to enhance the health, safety and productivity of the miners 'through advancing the fundamental .understanding of all aspects of respirable dust associated with mining and milling and the interaction of dus.t and lungs for reducing the incidence and severity of respirable dust disease. All Dust Center activities are focussed to be responsive to this mission which is shared by several federal agencies closely associated with the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust such as USBM, M,SHA, and NIOSH, and the mining industry. While significant progress has been achieved in making mine atmospheres cleaner and healthier, respirable dust disease remains the nations worst industrial hazard. GOALSThe goals of the Respirable Dust Center have been formulated to recognize the diverse scientific, engineering and medical aspects of respirable dust as well as the need to enhance the interaction, education and technology transfer in the respirable dust area.The Center goals are to:1. Enhance the understanding of the scientific, engineering and biological characteristics of fine and respirable mineral particles, fibers, organic aerosols, and complex particles found in the mining and milling atmospheres.2. Advance the understanding of the physical behavior of airborne respirable dust particles in flowing streams under different. stimuli during mining and milling.3. Advance fundamental understanding of the causative mechanisms for the occupationally related lung impairments and the airway diseases of mine and mill workers.4. Establish the relationship between natural and cultural factors (mine geology, mineralogy, mining and milling methods, equipment and control measures) in the generation, exposures, and pathogenic properties of fine particles.5. Contribute to the development of control mechanisms for reducing ambient respirable dust concentrations, worker exposure, the incidence and severity of dust related lung disorders and disease prevention in mining and milling atmospheres.6. Enhance functional integration among the various research personnel in the Center, as well as, with other groups, such as MSHA, NIOSH and USBM involved in respirable dust research and control.7. Develop technically trained personnel for employment in the mineral industry for respirable dust research and control.8. Enhance the availability of respirable dust-related information utilizing several technology transfer avenues."

Crocidolite deposits in the Hamersley Ranges, NW. of Western Australia, occur over a length of 180 miles and a width of 20' to 30 miles. Their stratigraphic environment and mineralogy is comparable to that of similar deposits of the Cape Belt, South Africa. It is probable that the known exposures' represent only a small portion of the total extent.Current production is wholly by Australian Blue Asbestos Pty. Ltd. at Wittenoom Gorge and has been in the order of 1,2,000 to 14,000 long t.p.a over the past six years.INTRODUCTIONThe Hamersley Ranges are located in the NW. Division of Western Australia and extend, approximately, from latitudes 21° 30' to 23°S and longitudes 117° to 1200 E. Their mean height above sea level is 2,000 ft, and they rise from 600 to 800 ft above the general level of the tableland which extends SE. from the coastal town of Roebourne.Mt. Bruce, the highest peak, is 4,024 ft above sea level. The ranges are intersected by numerous north-flowing streams, which are dry during the greater part of the year. These streams have carved deep gorges, and it is in these that the principal deposits of crocidolite outcrop.The presence of the mineral was first recorded in 1917, but the deposits remained untouched until 1937 when strong market demand for crocidolite resulted in considerable prospecting and mining activity, particularly in Yampire, Wittenoom and Dale's Gorges. It was established also that the blue asbestos belt extended from Willi Wolli Springs NW. to Millstream station, Le., over a length of 180 miles and a width of 20 to 30 miles. UNDER a contract relating to the sale of a Broken Hill concentrate, the differentiation between granular and slime concentrate is determined by the proportion of the material which will pass a 200-mesh (I.M.M. standard) screen, and this has led to considerable attention being devoted to the question of laboratory sizing tests with screens of this order.It was found that many of the screens turned out by the makers during the war, and also since its termination, did not conform with the I.M.M. specifications as closely as some supplied in pre-war days. A perfect screen is hardly to be expected, but when the above contract was framed the parties anticipated that, by special care being taken during manufacture, a screen at least as good as the best pre-war screens would be available. This, however, has not proved to be the case, and the large irregularities in screens recently supplied render them useless for sizing determinations under the contract. Variations of the temperature and steam/moisture content of the air with distance and time are modelled for a single airway. The input for the simulation is an air temperature that varies with time, together with the moisture/steam content that results, for example, from a fire with a given distribution of heat and of fume concentrations at the beginning of the airway. The transport of heat and moisture to the surface of the wallrock is assumed to be simultaneous. Such multiphase convection may result in evaporation from the moist wall close to the fire and recondensation downstream. The modelling of this non-linear effect is a unique feature of the new simulation. A new analytical solution is used to calculate the conduction of transient heat within the rock mantle, which, in the event of a fire, is typically a short-term process. This allows for an arbitrary variation of surface temperature with time - unlike that permitted by the age function solution, which is limited to stepped temperature changes. An iterative numerical scheme that has recently been developed to simulate mine climate is used to calculate the coupled transient heat conduction and multiphase surface heat transport in successive length increments along the airway. To demonstrate the simulation procedure a numerical example is presented in which a fire with a given distribution of heat and fume concentrations with time is located at the beginning of an airway

THE object of this paper is to review certain features in connection with the mining of narrow lodes, say up to 20 ft. or so wide. The types of ore-body to which it is intended to refer are those which occur. chiefly as fissure or shear-Iodes-that is, those lodes which are to be found in belts of country which have been subjected to dynamic stresses, resulting in the formation of cracks and fissures, into some of which has been concentrated sufficient metal-bearing material to form ores. Very frequently one of the walls of such a lode is found to be a fault, or plane of differential movement.The first point which comes up for consideration is the shaft and its position. From the information afforded by the prospecting which has been done on a lode relative to the dip, nature of country, &c., the position of the main hauling shaft can be determined. For purposes of general utility the hangingwall is generally chosen, if a vertical shaft, though, on account of freedom from creeps, the foot-wall would be safer. Vertical shafts are preferable to underlie shafts in many ways; but wherethe lode maintains a flat dip the cost of cross-cutting at the various levels becomes very heavy'. Stripping of Fe (III) from D2EHPA Using Different Reagents The common way to extract Fe(III) from an organic solvent is by using concentrated acidic solutions. The stripping of Fe(III) from organic solvent Di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) by hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions has been found to increase with increasing the acid concentration. However, the use of a concentrated acidic solution such as 6 M HCl can degrade the organic molecules. In this research, to increase the efficiency of Fe(III) stripping from D2EHPA, effect of some acids, salts and buffer solutions was studied. Influence of Tri-butyl phosphate (TBP) as modifier on the Fe(III) stripping operation was also investigated. According to the results, the best Fe stripping recovery was achieved in the presence of low acid concentration and the salts which was 72.4 per cent oxalic acid, 70 per cent ammonium oxalate and 75 per cent buffer of oxalic acid and ammonium oxalate. The results also showed a better recovery in the presence of the buffer rather than the salt. Finally, increasing the concentration of TBP, HCl and H2SO4 resulted in a higher stripping efficiency of Fe(III). However, in the presence of oxalic acid and its salts increasing the reagent concentration did not increase the stripping efficiency and at this condition, the recovery of iron remained constant.
