IN an earlier paper1 measurements of contact angles due to the effect of xanthates on mineral surfaces were reported. The solutions in which these measurements were made differed widely from those of modern flotation circuits. It is intended, however, by introducing, one at a time, the other principal reagents of flotation, to approach gradually the solu-tion composition of flotation liquors. The work now described is an attempt to determine the effect of one of the most important of these reagents-namely, sodium cyanide-on the establishment of air-mineral contact. The work has been carried out for the following companies: Broken Hill South, North Broken Hill, Zinc Corporation, Electro-lytic Zinc of Australasia, Mount Lyell Mining and Railway, and Burma Corporation. Since the effect of cyanide is inseparably connected with the alkalinity, the results cited below deal with the mutual effects of alkalis and cyanide. Alkalis alone exert a significant effect on the air-mineral contact but comparatively large amounts are required. Since the addition of a small amount of cyanide greatly decreases the degree of alkalinity necessary for the suppression of contact at surfaces of any of the minerals experimented with (except galena) and since alkalis are rarely used alone in practice, little attention has been paid to cyanide-free solutions. It was shown in the previous paper that, excluding the dixanthogen effect, whenever contact was practicable at all in an ethyl xanthate solution the angle of contact was 60°. There is, therefore, less necessity to measure equilibrium contact angles; in fact, the experiments herein described have generally been conducted with a view to determining whether contact is possible and not to measuring the actual value of the contact angle. Elastic wave velocities and moduli were determined by both the pulse and resonance methods in a large number of specimens of St. Cloud Gray Granodiorite and Tennessee marble under the same moisture, temperature, and stress environment. Long cylinders were first tested by the resonance method to obtain longitudinal bar and torsional wave velocity. The cylinders were then sectioned in half and tested by the pulse method to obtain the transient pulse velocity. These velocities were later used to obtain various moduli for comparison. Statistical comparisons between the Young's, shear, and bulk moduli and Poisson's ratios obtained independently by the pulse and resonance methods indicate that the methods do not give equivalent results in nearly isotropic rock. The amount of difference varies for each modulus, with the least difference (less than 5 pct) occurring in the shear modulus and the greatest difference (as high as 34 pct) in the bulk modulus. Moduli determinations in aluminum show much closer agreement between the pulse and resonance methods than in rock. The discrepancy in pulse and resonance results probably is caused by frequency dispersion effects and by differences in error sensitivity in the various formulas used to calculate the moduli.

A 70% excess of mesothelioma, an asbestos-related cancer, has been reported among men in northeastern Minnesota, where iron mining has been the major industry. The Minnesota Department of Health has studied iron miners who developed mesothelioma to identify possible sources of asbestos exposure. A database of all Minnesota residents diagnosed with mesothelioma between 1988 and 1996 was linked to a database of approximately 72,000 current and former Minnesota iron-mining employees to identify cases who had ever worked in the mining industry. The job histories of the cases were examined to determine if any of their jobs could have involved exposure to commercial asbestos. Seventeen individuals diagnosed with mesothelioma in Minnesota between 1988 and 1996 were found to have worked in the iron mining industry. Of the 15 for whom adequate work histories were available, 14 had identifiable sources of exposure to commercial asbestos in jobs held both inside and outside of the mining industry. The time between employment in these asbestosexposed occupations and the diagnosis of mesothelioma is consistent with the 20 or more year latency period that has been observed in other studies of this cancer. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a system for estimating mining and processing costs as a function of process feed rate with the objective of applying this system to abandoned mine tailings and to evaluate the benefits, if any, of metal recovery. Cost analysis was applied to the mine wastes of Smelterville Flats: an extensive area of mine tailings in the Bunker Hill Superfund Site with high concentrations of lead, zinc, and other sulfide minerals. Results from previous site characterization and metallurgical processing studies were used as the input for the cost analysis. This analysis indicated that processing this site at an optimum production rate of 3,500 short tons per day (st/d) could generate a positive cash flow.

The rock blasting and mining industries use a system of detonators and explosives for mining operations. Many detonators use small metal bridgewires, which are heated by passing a current through the wire, heating and igniting the pyrotechnic powder in contact with the wire, Typical bridgewires require a current of at least 3 amps, applied for a few milliseconds, for an explosive output. The semiconductor bridge (SCB), in comparison, initiates an explosive in 0.01 to 0.1 of a millisecond.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 4/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941. 5/ No reports were made on motor gasolines Bold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. 6/The present report presents analytical data for 1,499 samples, representing the products of approximately 105 companies. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gaso¬line are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for these analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items and brands comprising each group is as follows; Regular-price, 872 samples, 266 items, and 83 brands; -premium-price, 584 samples, 217 items, and 72 brands; third-grade, 43 samples, 32 items, and 21 brands. The effect of mineralogy on the grindability was investigated using three copper ores – two sulphides and one oxide. The dominant copper minerals were identified by optical microscopy and mineral chemistry derived from SEM-EDS analysis. The sample designated sulphide 1 was borniterich, sulphide 2 ore was mainly chalcopyrite, and the oxide ore was predominantly malachite and minor azurite. The gangue minerals were identified using semi-qualitative XRD analysis. Sulphide 1 contained more than 80% (w/w) of quartz compared to about 70% in the other two ores. The Bond work indices were 13.8, 21.6, and 17.3 kWh/t for sulphide 1, sulphide 2, and oxide ore respectively. This suggested that the chalcopyrite-rich ore is the hardest, while the malachite-rich ore has intermediate hardness, and the bornite-rich ore is the softest. The brittleness indices of the ores were calculated using the chemical composition of the gangue, and a good correlation between brittleness indices and Bond work indices was observed, which highlights the importance of the gangue composition in determining the fracture behaviour of the ores. There is scope for further investigation into the relationship between ore mineralogy and comminution behaviour using other breakage characterization techniques.

RECENT studies of creep have made it apparent that plastic deforma-tion may occur in metals under stresses less than the elastic limit as deter-mined from short-time tests. In summarizing conclusions drawn from creep tests by various investigators, Tapsell1 said: "It is evident that if a material has a true elastic range, the elastic limit must represent the maximum stress for no creep." The presence of a. definite elastic limit, represented in single crystals by a critical or threshold shearing stress, is claimed by Schmid2, Elam3 and others who have investigated the plastic deformation of single crystals. However, this "law of critical shearing stress" was deter-mined2 from short-time tests, and the measurement of the deformation was made with apparatus primarily designed to observe large amounts of plastic deformation, not to detect elastic changes. Experimental data recently obtained with highly sensitive instru-ments by A. W. Hanson4 on zinc and by Podaschowsky5 on rock salt indicate that the elastic range in single crystals is considerably narrower than formerly was supposed. Moreover, a theoretical possibility of permanent deformation, under the influence of even the smallest shear stress in single crystals above a certain temperature (Td), has been developed by G. I. Taylor6. This evidence seemed to warrant an examination of the elastic limit in large single crystals by means of creep tests. The first metal chosen for examination was zinc.

The Southern Alps of New Zealand and the mountains of Taiwan are both young transpressive orogens characterised by rapid uplift and exhumation, high heat flow and vigorous surface processes. Comparing and contrasting the two provides an ideal framework through which to explore the structural and lithological controls on fluid and gold mobility during collisional deformation. Both have two fluid flow systems centred about their drainage divide with shallow topographically-driven meteoric water above a deeper flow system dominated by mineralising rock-exchanged fluids. Despite similar tectonic settings, the distribution of heat flow, hot springs and veins in the two orogens are different. Taiwan has higher heat flow, distributed hot springs and localised veining whereas the Southern Alps have a narrow heat flow anomaly, localised warm springs and widespread veining. We use three-dimensional numerical models to evaluate key parameters that affect fluid flow and gold mineralisation. Models show that differences in crustal strength and thickness affect the locus, scale and rate of crustal fluid flow and hence influence gold deposition at a variety of scales. We explore how surface topography can lead to localised changes in the stress state, facilitating the switching of principal stresses and hence vein orientations.CITATION:Upton, P and Craw, D, 2015. The effect of solid particles on viscosity behavior of Na2O-O-B2O3-SiO2 melts of composition XSio2/XNa2o =0.5 and in the temperature range of 900- 1150 K was studied. Samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy. The results showed that a crystalline phase (NaBO2) was formed and its amount increases with decrease in X,, from 0.50 to 0.25. The experimental viscosity values were compared with the predicted values using our viscosity model developed earlier. At low temperatures, for low content of B2O3 , the experimental values exhibits a large deviation from the predicted values. It was concluded that the deviation was due to the formation of solid particles in the molten slags. The existence of these solid particles increased the viscosity values significantly. A new viscosity model was developed to include the effect of solid particles.

(communication to the Secretary*):—For some time before the publication of Mr. Scholz's paper, I had been collecting data bearing upon its subject, and I now take pleasure in presenting to the Institute my results in the form of a discussion. It has long been a matter of common opinion among mining-men that mine-explosions are more frequent during the colder, or winter months, than during the warmer ones, and it is a matter of common knowledge among them that the air-ways and road-ways in most mines are much drier and are more inclined to be dusty during the winter than during the summer. In many mines, places which are wet and sloppy in the summer are dry and sometimes dusty during the winter. These changes, of course, can only be due to atmospheric conditions, and are caused by differences in temperature and humidity. Until recently, however, very little attention has been paid to the part that atmospheric conditions may play in mine-explosions, or, rather, to the effect they may have in rendering mine-conditions peculiarly dangerous, and in spreading and rendering more disastrous the effects of what otherwise probably would have been small explosions. To show the difference in mine-conditions during summer and winter months, I have tabulated in Table I. the results of 24 observations of hygrometric conditions in several different mines at different times of the year. Mines Nos. 1, 2, and 6 are located in the Pocahontas coal-region, in McDowell county,w.Va., the first one being a shaft-mine and the others drift. Mines 1A and 2A are drift-mines located in Logan county, W. Va. All of these are mines of fair size, but none of them has been in operation more than six years,

O objetivo deste trabalho é contribuir no desenvolvimento de novas soluções para a terapia endodôntica através do uso da análise por elementos finitos para avaliar o comportamento mecânico de instrumentos endodônticos. Primeiramente comparou-se os resultados de testes de flexão e torção com simulações realizadas sob as mesmas condições para validação. Uma vez validada a metodologia, pôde-se avaliar o comportamento de uma lima de NiTi CM em comparação a outras duas de aço inoxidável e NiTi superelástico com mesma geometria. As geometrias de dois instrumentos endodônticos comercialmente disponíveis foram submetidas a microtomografia computadorizada para a construção de modelos 3D. A malha de elementos finitos em ABAQUS e as condições de contorno foram baseadas em ensaios experimentais de flexão e torção de limas. Os modelos constitutivos foram obtidos a partir de curvas tensão-deformação em fios de NiTi superelástco, NiTi CM e aço inoxidável. Os resultados mostraram uma boa concordância entre resultados experimentais e simulados. O instrumento de NiTi CM apresentou-se como o mais flexível em comparação aos instrumentos de NiTi superelástico e aço inoxidável.

This paper describes the methods of mining and washing brown iron are in 1957 at the Sawyer mine, leased by Wayne County Mining Co., and the Fore mine, leased by Four Mining Co., both in southern Missouri; it is one of a series prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on mining and milling methods and costs in various districts of the United States. The Sawyer mine is in Wayne County, about 10 miles north-northeast of Williamsville (fig. 1); the Fore mine is in Howell County, about 20 miles southwest of West Plains (fig. 2). Both are open-pit mines from which the crude are was upgraded by washing and hand-sorting to produce are of grade and quality suitable for sale to operators of iron and steel furnaces. The operations described are typical of many others that produce or have produced marketable brown iron are from small sedimentary deposits, several hundred of which outcrop on the crests or hill sides of southern Missouri (fig. 3). The 1957 production of marketable brown iron are by 40 separate operations in the southern part of the State was 281,427 wet long tons, valued at $1,637,243. Production from the Sawyer mine that year was 17,000 dry long tons of washed are, and from the Fore mine, 20,816 dry long tons.

INGEMMET realizó el proyecto “Estudio de los Recursos Minerales del Perú” con el objetivo de identificar las áreas prospectivas para propiciar actividades de exploración minera por parte de la empresa privada. Entre las funciones ejecutadas está la “Prospección Geoquímica Regional de Sedimentos de Quebrada”, donde se ha recopilado 5,636 muestras de sedimentos de quebrada, las que fueron analizadas por Au y 32 elementos a fin de elaborar posteriormente el Atlas Geoquímico del Perú. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala el uso del software para el tratamiento estadístico de los resultados a través del soporte técnico de la empresa GEOSOFT. Dicho software genera una tecnología confiable así como lo versatilidad para el manejo e interpretación de diversos datos. También se desarrolló el programa OASIS – MONTAJ; módulo CHIMERA con el cual se pueden manejar en forma exacta una gran cantidad de información geoquímica empleando controles de estándares y duplicados.

Wettability measurements and laboratory waterflood tests were compared under a wide variety of conditions. Experiments were conducted with synthetic and natural crude oils, treated and untreated outcrop and oilfield sandstone cores, and synthetic brines with and without caustic, detergent, or phosphate additives. Measurements were made on equilibrated and unequilibrated systems at 77° and 150° F. Wettability was evaluated by the Bureau of Mines method from capillary pressure curves determined with a centrifuge. The waterflood data were fitted by empirical curves; the parameters of the curves characterize primary and subordinate production and also give the ultimate oil recovery. Results showed that wettability measurements at 77° F were useful predictors of recovery efficiency in waterflood tests run at both temperatures. Oil recovery in the early stages of waterflooding increased with increasing water wettability; however, the ultimate recovery was highest at a slightly oil-wet condition. The oil displaced at highest speed in the centrifuge was correlated with ultimate recovery in waterflood tests. Chemical additives to the brine sometimes lowered wettability and also sometimes improved waterflood recovery, but wettability and recovery were not correlated with additives present. The effect of additives on recovery in waterflooding was best seen in water-oil ratio curves.

Investigations in the Ortiz Mountains have revealed the relationship of igneous activity and gold mineralization to the Tijeras-Canoncito Fault System (TCFS). The northeast-trending TCFS passes through the southeastern part of the Ortiz Mountains where its principal structure is the asymmetric Ortiz Graben. Several fault blocks, containing up to 305 m (1000 ft ) of Eocene Galisteo Formation, comprise the graben that has up to 1220 and 610 m (4000 and 2000 ft) of stratigraphic separation on its southeast and northwest sides, respectively. Intrusions in the Ortiz Mountains can be subdivided into two petrochemical types: an older calcalkaline suite and a younger alkaline suite. The calc-alkaline rocks are characterized by extensive sill, dike, and laccolithic bodies of latite-andesite intrusives and at least one younger (?) granodiorite stock at Candelaria Mountain. The alkaline rocks consist of a large nepheline-bearing augite-monzonite stock, a latite-porphyry hypabyssal plug, the Ortiz diatreme (vent breccia), and trachytic-latite dikes radial to the diatreme. K-Ar age determinations suggest the older suite to be 34 +/-2.2 million years while the younger alkaline rocks range from about 30 to 26 million years. Gold mineralization in the Ortiz Mountains occurs in five distinct environments: brecciapipes, skarns, veins, porphyry-like stockworks, and placers. Lode mineralization is associated with the alkaline suite of intrusive rocks postdating the Ortiz diatreme and predating most of the trachytic-latite radial dikes.

Work started on the building of the Amsterdam Concert Hall in 1880 by driving over 2000 wooden piles of 13 m on which foundation-beams out of wood and brickwork were made. During construction the design was changed. This was due to the latest German developments, requiring double walls instead of single, so that the space in between could be used for ventilation and heating. Therefore the pile load, originally designed at approximately 100 kN, increased even to 170 kN for some piles, causing settlements and unacceptable cracks in the brickwork. Settlements of up to 18 cm were measured. In 1985/1986 around 400 vibration-free Tubex-displacement-piles were installed under the Concert Hall, with a shaft of 0355 mm, a pile shoe of 0560 mm and a pile length of approximately 18 m. After these Tubex piles had been installed they took over the complete weight of the whole building, thus eliminating further settlements and damage. 95% of all the construction activities took place while the concerts went on. The chosen solution also made it possible to create a new basement under the Concert Hall as an extension for dressing-rooms etc.

The activities of the Bureau of Mines include the development and testing of self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus and other devices for respiratory protection, the development and tasting of devices for detecting dangerous or noxious mine atmospheres, and the training of men in the mineral industries in the use and care of this equipment to enable them to render effective service in mine rescue and recovery operations following mine fires and explosions, or under other conditions where irrespirable gases may be found in mines or mining plants. The first use of self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus for com- bating mine fires and explosions in the United States dates back about 30 years. Previous to that time, exploration for any distance ahead of fresh air was virtually impossible without great risk to life; moreover, the men called upon to render service at mine disasters were not well-versed in the properties and physiological effects of gases likely to be encountered. It was also impossible to work ahead of fresh air to restore ventilation, and if many stoppings were blown out by an explosion, air had to be introduced into whole areas or sections at once without knowledge of the conditions ahead; moving an explosive mixture of methane and air over live fire had to

This paper provides an update to a paper by the author on an overseas explorer's perception of New Zealand, presented at the 1997 New Zealand Minerals & Mining Conference. New Zealand has one of the most open and internationally competitive economies in the world. The petroleum exploration industry in New Zealand is booming with a record number of wells planned for 2000. New Zealand is keen to encourage investment in mineral exploration to develop its natural resources. A study of the geological potential of New Zealand estimated the value of known and potential resources of metals at $86 billion. Gold has the greatest potential, with a total resource estimated at $33.5 billion. The price of gold has averaged NZ$554 since the beginning of 1998, and NZ$593 in the last year, which is very competitive with other countries. An assessment of country risk compared New Zealand with twenty other countries in ten risk categories: sovereign risk, land access, environmental issues, land claims, mining legislation, social risk, infrastructure, civil unrest, natural disasters and workforce. New Zealand ranked fifth, showing it has low country risk. This provides a high degree of certainty for investment, which is important for the perception of New Zealand as an exploration destination. Corruption was considered separately, and New Zealand ranked third out of ninety countries, showing it is one of the least corrupt countries in the world. New Zealand has a favourable business environment, good geological potential, low country risk and no corruption. Despite this, New Zealand has not registered on the radar screens of overseas mineral explorers, and the positive factors appear to have been overlooked. New Zealand has considerable undeveloped mineral potential, and with the current rise in commodity prices, it is hoped New Zealand can participate in a resurgence in mineral exploration.

Total mechanisation in the Western district of New South Wales is quite a recent addition to productive methods in that State, for it was only in 1940 that the first colliery was equipped for this method of winning coal. Now almost all mines either are totally mechanised or are planning to get their coal by these means.This marked change in recent years is explained by the salient features of the industry's history. Collieries in New South Wales had generally been subjected to low selling prices forced on them by over-production and severe competition. Little money was available out of profits to purchase machinery, and returns on capital were so poor that inducement to invest money in the industry was nonexistent.The second world war brought price fixing at the already low prices. It was not until the post-war period that there has been any inducement to mechanise.Much credit for mechanisation can be given to the Joint Coal Board, a government body formed in 1948. Pursuing a broad plan for the rejuvenation of the industry, this Board, purchased large quantities of machinery for use in, mines under hire-purchase agreement. These agreements encouraged machine mining, and this fact, together with the ensuing production economies, has improved the financial position of the industry.The Board has also been instrumental in the granting of increases in the fixed price of coal, so that the industry has been given an even greater boost in the direction of mechanisation.
