Coal is a valuable energy source in New Zealand and has been mined from the West Coast for over 100 years. Stockton Mine is New Zealand's largest opencast coal producer supplying around 1.5 Mt of hard coking and thermal coal to international markets annually. The Stockton Plateau forms an extensive, gently inclined dip slope on erosion resistant Lower Eocene Brunner Coal Measures unconformably overlying basement rocks. The dip slope rises 600 - 1000 masl, locally dissected by fault scarps and present-day fluvial systems, some of which are deeply incised. Within the Mt Augustus Mining Block overburden comprises of a 30 - 40 m thick sequence of fluviatile, coarse to granular coal measure sandstones. High quality coking coal is preserved as a gently dipping, 10 - 12 m thick seam. High and sometimes very steep cliffs of jointed overburden shape the skyline escarpment, above steep forested slopes and gullies. As mining has progressed at Mt Augustus individual coal blocks are progressively becoming more technically challenging. This paper outlines the scientific approach taken by Solid Energy International and mining contractors to carefully unlock many thousands of tons of coal whilst protecting nearby flora and fauna from the impacts of dislodged rock and other blasting side-effects. The strategy involved: an expert-driven onsite risk assessment,formulation of a management plan to manage impacts,conducting an in situ vibration research program, andanalysis of results and operational designs to eliminate potential environmental problems.

In choosing such a threadbare subject for a paper I fear that I may in some measure be taxing your patience, yet as upon the accuracy with which the work is done depends the result of conclusions drawn as to whether a property will be profitable to work or otherwise. The subject cannot be too well threshed out, and I trust that upon certain points that have come within my own experience I may be able to give 'hints that will prevent others from making mistakes. First as to alluvial. Gold is often found from the grass roots down, often ill particular horizontal bands in the wash, but more generally concentrated either on a true or false bottom. When sampling dry ground for proposed hydraulicing I have obtained accurate results only by taking the whole of the dirt from measured shafts, stacking it as it was lifted on a tarpaulin, and putting the whole quantity through a carefully constructed box. In wet ground careful borings will in most cases give fairly correct results, but where it is possible to sink shafts, that should be done, as a guide is then also obtained as to the nature of the wash, whether it is bouldery, cemented, or free. Sampling in a face is a more difficult work in many respects than in new ground, as so many elements enter into action to spoil accurate sampling. Of course the great thing to avoid is sampling in any place where either natural or artificial concentration has taken place, and very much has to be left to circumstance and the sampler's own judgment. In passing I may mention that I have on several occasions seen diggers deceive themselves in wet ground where they were sinking and coping as best they might with water. They would take a dish of dirt from the bottom of their hole, pan it off, and take the result as a fair yield, and on the strength of it perhaps spend a lot of time and money in tail races and whereas in their sample there had been a process of concentration carried on, the movement and working in the water had caused the gold to work down, and anything like accurate estimations by the method pursued were out of the question.

Vale is in the early stages of commissioning its Onça Puma nickel operations. The project is meant for the production of 58,000 tpa of nickel contained in ferro-nickel, substantially contributing to the company?s vision to achieve world leadership in the nickel business. Mineral resources will be exploited from the homonymous deposits in the Midwest of state of Para, Brazil ? some 100 km southwestwards from the company?s Carajás iron ore properties. Resources as of 83 Mt at 1.73 % Ni will sustain a mine life of approximately 40 years. The property was acquired in late 2005 and Vale has since extended the engineering studies and proceeded with the implementation. Nickel will be mined from saprolitic ore at a rate of approximately 10 Mtpa (ore plus waste) in early years ? ramping up to some 15 Mtpa 7 years later ?, to feed the plant at a rate of 2.5 Mtpa. The process uses conventional RKEF (Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace) pyrometalurgical route whereby the ore is homogenized, calcined in rotary kilns, melted in electric furnaces and further refined to ferro-nickel. The plant has been designed and constructed applying the latest available technology, aligned with Vale?s vison to exceed the highest existing standards for environmental control, health and safety and productivity in the industry. Total investments in these operations are anticipated to correspond to USD 2.3 Bi and will materially contribute to the regional development and well being of the nearby communities and other stakeholders.

From observations of the linear displacement of oil by water from a porous medium as visualized in transparent models, new insight into the mechanism of vircous fingering, as occurring in the case of unfavorable oil-water viscosity ratios, has been obtained. A mathematical description of the observed phenomena leads to formulas. expressing both oil production and pressure drop across the formation as a func-tion of cumulative water injection with the oil-water viscosity ratio as a parameter. Theoretical results are compared with those obtained from scaled laboratory experiments in sand-filled rubes in which water was injected at the one end and production was obtained from the other end. In the second part of the paper the same principles are used to calculate a more realistic production scheme in which production of oil and water is obtained from wells regularly distributed over the field. Results show satisfactory agreement with production data of an actual oil field. Application of the theory is extremely simple as only a limited number of readily available parameters have to be known and results are presented in an analytical form. INTRODUCTION When oil is displaced from a porous medium by water having a viscosity lower than the oil. the oil-water interface is essentially unstable and has the tendency to break up into what are called "fingers" or "streamers". This Viscous fingering has been noted before by Engelberts and Klinkenberg' and has recently been demonstrated in transparent models by van Meurs-. It is highly questionable whether it is at all possible to perform relative permeability measurements In the laboratory reproducing the same distribution of water and oil in the cores as Present in practice. Therefore, we based our descriptive theory on an idealized model which was "tailored" to the fingering mechanism as observed in transparent models under scaled conditions. This approach was the more attractive, as a highly simplified model had already yielded an adequate description of the process. Though we are aware our theoretical approach can be extended in several ways, it is given here in its simplest form to explain the fundamental principles and to avoid complicated formulas. SIMPLEST CASE OF A LINEAR DRIVE Observations and Theoretical Model In Fig. 1 a series of photographs shows how water penetrates into a formation saturated with an oil which is considerably more viscous than the water. The technique for obtaining these photographs, using transparent models, has already been described?. The fingers can be clearly observed and are seen to be mainly parallel to the flow direction. Note that the contours of these fingers are not smooth but show protrusions of water enclosing oil pockets.

Knowledge of fuel qualities is of ultimate importance for the efficiency of chemical plants or power stations. Although most blending yards are equipped with automatic samplers and the derived samples are processed in the laboratory, the quality variation of the blended product may still be strong. This is caused by several reasons. First of all the process of sampling, crushing, dividing and analysis is time consuming. Results are available only with a delay of two to 24 hours. During this time blending is operated without knowledge of the main parameters. Conveyors with high throughput require expensive sampling systems capable of handling samples which are representative. The frequency of sampling needs also to be high in order to be representative. This results in high maintenance costs and also downtime of the sampling system.Online analysis of bulk materials has matured over time and today it can supplement but not replace laboratory analysis. As an example, J&C Bachmann has realised a coal quality monitoring system on the coal supply of a South African coal processing plant. The plant consumes ~42 Mt of coal per annum. The blending yard consists of two sets of three heaps where coal of six different mines is blended according to the factory’s requirement. From there, the blended coal is fed to the factory on two different belts.In 2010 the plant installed a TEXAS X-ray fluorescence analyser as a trial. It was tested under different conditions on several belts before the customer decided to install six TEXAS analysers on the feed belts to the stackers and two more analysers on the reclaimer belts. All analysers are installed directly on the belt and not on a substream.During the test period blending strategies were developed in close cooperation between the customer and J&C Bachmann. 1. Paper1?Identification and enumeration of asbestos fibers in the mining environment: mission and modification to the federal asbestos standard Arthur M. Langer Asbestos-related disease is increased with cumulative exposure (the concentration of asbestos in the air and duration of exposure). The maximum duration is assumed to be a working lifetime so federal agencies control cumulative exposure by limiting the airborne concentration of asbestos fibers equal to or greater than 5 lm in length. Air samples are collected in the environment of interest by entraining the airborne particulates including fibers on membrane filters and then counting the number of fibers using phase-contrast light microscopy. In addition to length, the fibers must have a length to width ratio of at least 3 to 1. This ratio is also referred to as the aspect ratio. Some counting strategies placed an upper limit on the fiber width restricting the counting to respirable fibers. Airborne asbestos is controlled by monitoring a sub-population of the airborne asbestos. No asbestos fibers shorter than 5 lm or fibers of any length having widths less than the resolution of the light optical method are counted. In the non-occupational environment, the Environmental Protection Agency requires the use of analytical transmission electron microscopy and fibers and counting fibers with lengths of 0.5 lm or greater and aspect ratios of 5 to 1 or greater are counted. The permissible exposure limit for asbestos has been reduced by more than 120-fold since 1969, when the standard was 12 fiber/ml and the current monitoring methodology was developed. The manufacturing and mining worksites are regulated by two different federal agencies and the asbestos exposure limit was higher in the mining environment until recently (Mine Safety and Health Administration 30 CFR Part 56, 57, and 7, Federal Registry, February 29, 2008). Currently the permissible exposure limit (PEL) is the same in both types of workplace and it is 0.1 fibers per milliliter (fiber/ml) over an 8-h shift as a time-weighted average (TWA). A milliliter (ml) is equivalent to a cubic centimeter (cc) and sometimes this standard is reported as 0.1 f/cc. As the phase-contrast methodology was used to monitor lower exposures and environments, other fibrous mineral particulates were incorrectly characterized as asbestos. These occurred in talc deposits and taconite ores from the Eastern Mesabi Range.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration?s (MSHA) Roof Control Division (RCD) collects a variety of geological and engineering information pertaining to mining conditions in surface and underground mines throughout the United States. Recently, lineament analyses, trends of geologic structures, and inferred stress directions based on mapping at mines with problematic ground conditions, have been integrated into a GIS. The incorporation of different kinds of information into the same geographic coordinates and map projection, placed on digital geologic maps, allows site specific data to be evaluated in a regional geospatial context, identifying trends in the orientation of horizontal stress or patterns of structural geologic features. As more information is collected, the GIS will evolve as a tool for district- and basin-wide evaluations of controls on ground instability, and may evolve into a predictive tool for some kinds of geologic hazards. In addition to the geologic and geotechnical evaluations, the GIS also serves as a searchable database of previous mine investigations. The database can be searched for a variety of criteria, and the results displayed in real geographic coordinates to find the locations of previously visited mines or to evaluate mine fatality and injury data. This not only allows old reports to be found, but also places the information in a geospatial context with respect to neighboring mines or geographic areas. The GIS also has the capability to serve as a digital mine map repository, where maps can be stored in digital, georeferenced format for display in relation to each other and various themes of interest. This allows evaluation of multiple seam mining interactions and proximity to other mines, and on a national level could serve as an abandoned mine map database.

The introduction of new technology into mining operations is seen as a strategic necessity by many mining companies, in order to improve safety and to improve operational effectiveness. Many attempts have been made in recent years to introduce new technologies into mining operations in southern Africa. Amongst these are noteworthy successes, as well as some disappointing failures. Often, the reason for failure does not lie with the technology itself, but with the work system into which the technology is introduced. Such failures may come with a significant opportunity cost, and have a detrimental effect on future development, simply because the system has not been adequately engineered, and the risks have not been adequately assessed and managed. This paper examines the reasons for such failures, and proposes a methodology to be followed to ensure successful and sustainable implementation of new technologies, such as to reduce technical and financial risk to the company, and to energize the workforce into ensuring the initial objectives of the project are met. The paper also focuses on the application of appropriate technology, and the development of technological applications which are commensurate with the level of development of the work environment into which it is introduced. The paper therefore focuses on the application of risk management, change management, systems engineering and feasibility analysis as being key elements of a successful and holistic technology implementation programme.

"By using the latest generation of medium voltage frequency converters, new possibilities have arisen to improve the grinding process. Beside all the direct and indirect advantages, several dedicated functions have now been implemented for ring geared grinding mills in the minerals industry. The advanced operational functions ensure a smooth, safe and reliable operation with minimum stress for the mechanical equipment and therefore highest availability of the mill. Several papers have already been presented concerning the benefits of using this state of the art technology for mill drives (Ravani von Ow and Bomvisinho, 2010; Ravani von Ow and Gerhard, 2010). However this paper will not only show and explain the operational benefit of these functions, but will focus on the experiences gained with this kind of sophisticated ring geared mill drive system. Several measurements of different operating conditions (starting, frozen charge remover, controlled roll back, backlash, etc.) made on an installed and commissioned 2 x 5 MW dual pinion ring geared mill drive system will be shown and discussed. Also the accuracy of the load sharing between the two 5 MW motors during starting, normal operation and stopping will be demonstrated using real measurements from an operating system. Finally the inherent features of these drive systems are briefly discussed.INTRODUCTIONLooking at the demands of grinding mills, we can split them into operational, maintenance and protective demands. For smooth and safe operation, it is important that critical situations are avoided as much as possible. Maintenance functionality must be quick and easy to execute, while protection of the system is important during all operating conditions. ABB has considered all these demands during development of their dedicated mill functions. By adding an additional controller (mill controller), not only a lot of application related functionality and protection is included, but also the interface between the mill drive system and the customer’s distributed control system (DCS) is simplified."

A job analysis is a written list of the tasks associated with doing a particular job. In drilling, describing the steps associated with adding rod to the drill steel would be an example of a task associated with the job. How to hammer casing or fish a lost drill bit out of a hole would also be job tasks. Develop a written list of job tasks. Ask drillers in your company if the tasks listed are correct and accurately reflect how to perform the job. While each driller may do the job a little differently, some tried?and?true methods are required to perform certain tasks safely and correctly. You may find a separate analysis is needed for different drilling jobs (e.g., a residential well or a monitoring well). Also remember to include the tasks of both the helper and the driller.

This study was conducted as part of a project involving the evaluation of a new type of noise exposure monitoring paradigm. Laboratory tests were conducted to assess how “nonstandard” dosimeter microphones and microphone po­sitions measured noise levels under different acoustical condi­tions (i.e., diffuse ?eld and direct ?eld). The data presented in this article re?ect measurement differences due to microphone position and mounting/supporting structure only and are not an evaluation of any particular complete dosimeter system. To varying degrees, the results obtained with the dosimeter microphones used in this study differed from the reference results obtained in the unperturbed (subject absent) sound ?eld with a precision (suitable for use in an ANSI Type 1 sound level meter) 1/2 -inch (12.7 mm) measurement microphone. Effects of dosimeter microphone placement in a diffuse ?eld were found to be minor for most of the test microphones/locations, while direct ?eld microphone placement effects were found to be quite large depending on the microphone position and supporting structure, sound source location, and noise spectrum.

The effect of water infusion on the flow of methane and on the production of dust was investigated at an active face in the Pittsburgh coalbed. The average total flow of methane at the face decreased by approximately 79 percent, whereas the flow from the ribs increased about 24 percent after infusion. On the day after infusion, dust concentrations appear to have been reduced; however, the presence of large quantities of rock dust obscured the results on the following days.

We have lived through a period of strong metal pricing during the past eight to 10 years. Copper has been hovering in the range of $3-$4/lb during much of the past eight years, averaging close to $3.30/lb. Gold increased steadily from less than $300/oz levels in the early 2000s, reaching almost $1,890/oz in the third quarter of 2011, before tempering back down to the $1,200-1,400/oz range in 2013. Iron ore prices started to rise in 2005 before the staggering increases experienced in 2008- 2010, reaching almost $190/metric ton in early 2011. During the past four years, iron ore prices have ranged from $100-180/t, averaging approximately $140/t. In the aftermath of such a run, it is perhaps too easy to forget where we have come from: The copper price averaged just 77 cents/lb during the six-year period from 1998 to 2003, and averaged just over $1/lb from 1989 to 1997. The gold price averaged $350/oz during the 10-year period from 1994 to 2003. Even more dramatically, iron ore traded in the range of $10-$15/t between 1985 and 2004. So, we have seen sustained, three- to four-fold increases in copper and gold prices, and 8 to 10-fold increases in iron ore prices.

Changes and the pace of change in China’s coal industry have been extraordinary during the past several years. At least 35 of the 94 former coal bureaus have been restructured into different mining companies and groups. Some of the more productive and efficient ones were further strengthened through consolidation and expansions. And several have even formed, or are in the process of forming, strategic alliances with utility companies, railroads, ports and chemical companies to secure additional reserves and coal sales. In addition, the improvement in coal pricing during the past two years has enabled China’s coal industry to move ahead with some needed changes. Coal mining accidents, though, remain a major concern for the Chinese government. Accidents remain high even though the government has made efforts to shutdown more than 55,000 unlicensed, unsafe small coal operations throughout the country.

Sustainable development is currently an extremely relevant concept worldwide, especially in developing countries like South Africa. Mining and metals companies are also directly affected by the sustainable development agenda. The Mining Charter?s requirements as well as new legislation (Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act) expect, among others, for mines to support infrastructure and poverty eradication projects in the communities surrounding the mines. The aim of this paper is to, against the background of a qualitative study of mining communities in the North-West Province of South Africa, put forward some critical factors for the sustainability of social development projects in the mining sector.

The proposed 1.83km long twin bore A3 Hindhead road tunnel planned for contruction in 2008 is being delivered under a Highways Agency Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contract. The proposed construction methodology is progressive mechanical excavation of a horseshoe shaped tunnel with shotcrete installed close behind the face using robotic spraying equipment. The tunneling medium is a ‘soft rock’ sandstone for which there was little previous tunneling experience, requiring extensive geotechnical investigations and an innovative approach to lining design. A 240m long portal section though sandy material utilising a steel pipe umbrella is also required. This paper describes the development of the tunnel planning and design including the most recent developments in UK road tunnels, and the innovation included in the ‘permanent’ primary lining design.

Oil and gas development in Mississippi during the year 1933 was rather active and a number of important wildcat wells were drilled throughout the state. Mississippi showed an increase in drilling operations during 1933. There were 58 completions from 22 counties during this period, compared with 53 completions in 10 counties during 1932. The Jackson gas field in Hinds and Rankin counties continued to be the most active area with 26 completions, resulting in 17 gas wells, 2 oil wells, and 7 dry holes, compared with 38 gas wells, 1 oil well and 5 dry holes during 1932. A further attempt to extend the producing limits of the Amory gas field resulted in a dry hole. Extensive exploration in south Mississippi has proved the existence of ample source beds and presence of an extensive sandbody near the top of Cockfield. Core tests, supplemented by extensive geophysical work, have been carried on in Jackson, George, Harrison, Pearl River and Stone counties. Exploration will be continued in 1934. The most important deep test drilled in 1933, and the deepest well ever drilled in a southeastern state, was the Eastman Gardner et al., Bank of Seminary No. 1, sec. 26-8N.-15W., Covington County. This well went through about 1300 ft. of Selma chalk, and was abandoned in the Eutaw at 8004 ft. Another interesting operation during the past year was the Foster Creek Oil Corporation's Foster Creek Lumber Co. No. 1, sec. 14-2N.-2W., in the "Eastern Conroe Trend." This test is shut down at 3687 ft. in the Catahoula sandstone and has not encountered any important shows of oil or gas. A total of 107 of the 117 gas wells completed in the Jackson gas field since its discovery in 1930 are still producing, and have a combined open flow of approximately 3,724,896,000 cu. ft. It is reasonable to assume that this area will be rather inactive during 1934 as the maximum daily production during 1933 was 3,476,000 cu. ft. The 10 wells that have gone dead were edge wells. The water level is now between the sub-sea depths of 2190 and 2195 ft. The Gulf Refining Company's Rainey No. 1, sec. 13-5N.-lE., one of the early wells in the field, had gas and water at —2225 ft. As part of an investigation of the deep structure of the Waihi Basin, an extensive set of resistivity measurements was recently collected by DSIR Geology & Geophysics. The objective of this work is to map deep resistivity changes throughout the Waihi area in order to contribute to a better understanding of the regional geophysical structure. This research is also aimed at improving techniques for locating 'deposits of epithermal mineral resources, and helping to establish their origin and genetic relationship to fossil geothermal systems.   The results indicate that the basin south of Waihi is underlain by an extensive layer of low resistivity, modelled as a 5ohm-m layer several hundred metres thick. Lake sediments (mudstones), as exposed in the south western part of the basin, near Waitawheta, are the most likely source of this low resistivity layer, although hydrothermally altered clays and/or elevated temperatures are other possible causes. Strong northeast trending anisotropy is also observed, implying structural links from Waitawheta through to Golden Valley. The observed resistivity pattern is consistent with a æburied calderaÆ or æfaulted depressionÆ structural model for the basin, as inferred from gravity and magnetic data.
