The International Labor Organization has declared mandatory adequate provision of safe workplace and safety for all workers in all occupations including the mining sector. Early scientists like Agricola (1559) who studied the health of Miners, found that there are peculiar health problems associated to their work and working environment. This unsafe working condition was one of the major factors that resulted to the Industrial revolution in England and eventually led to the establishment of regulations and laws guiding operations in all workplaces and workers in England and all over the world. Recent studies by Heinrich suggested chains of events of safety issues in the mining sector. Occupational injuries, accidents and ill health have huge social and economic implications on workers, their families and communities. Top mining top issues are respiratory diseases, noise, explosives, ventilation, fire, and explosion. However, one of the principal mechanisms for achieving Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) goals and mapping the future is government regulations of employers. In Nigeria, the situation is not different; mining operations are equally hazardous and have far reaching implications. In 1995 the Ministry for Solid Minerals was established to focus on the development of other categories of mineral products ranging from gold, coal, uranium, and tantalum deposited across the country. Prior to this an Act of Parliament Act Cap 121 of 1946, was in place to regulate amongst other contents mining safety. This was subsequently reviewed following the incidence of Lead poisoning resulting from small scale miners processing gold ore highly contaminated with lead in Zamfara state (northern Nigeria). Hundreds of children died as a result of exposure to lead poisoning, it was clear that the regulations were not sufficient (details to be discussed). However, advances have been achieved in mining engineering since then. A review team was constituted to provide a more stringent law to regulate mining operations in Nigeria. The strategies for mapping the future of OHS in mining engineering will employ amongst others setting and adopting ISO/ILO standards and enforcement; providing technical assistance; and establishing sustainable developmental structures as surveillance and compensation. The management systems approach was also developed as a result of cases of accidents. The accepted international standards guidelines and requirements will be proposed. Furthermore in mapping the future for Mining Engineering, it is suggested that most countries have their own management strategies and legislation to improve safety of workers through greater consistency and efficiency of OHS programs. Some American researchers came up with the Safety Engineering Model. The Australian Mining Council of mineral and petroleum resources after the Catastrophic Maura Disaster developed the National Mine and Safety Framework. In Canada, after the Hillcrest mine disaster in 1914, Allan shaft coal mine catastrophe in 1918, Westray mine explosion in 1992 and other disasters, Occupational Health and Safety Act R.R.O 1990 was sufficiently developed to provide adequate safety conditions and standards. In Nigeria after the disastrous Zamfara lead poisoning, which claimed the lives of hundreds of children due to exposure and lack of appropriate safety measures, stringent measures were developed by the federal ministry of Justice to address and regulate mining process in Nigeria.

This research reports on the synthesis of advanced silicon-based structural ceramics from mixtures composed of natural sand (Sinai white sand), reclaimed silicon and graphite by the nitriding combustion synthesis method. With pulverized sand (? 40 m), we found that the nitriding combustion can be realized at self-sustaining mode in the SiO2?Si?C system under 3 MPa nitrogen pressure. Depending on the composition of the starting mixtures, single-phase silicon oxynitride (Si2N2O) powder as well as new Si3N4?Si2N2O and Si2N2O?SiC composite powders with controllable chemical compositions were successfully developed. The measured thermograms of various combusted mixtures and the thermodynamic characteristics of possible exothermic reactions in this system were discussed to explain the nitriding combustion behaviour and mechanism. Near-full dense Si2N2O were fabricated from synthesized Si2N2O powder with 5 wt % oxide additive by the spark plasma sintering (SPS) method at 1600 °C. The dense Si2N2O samples had good mechanical properties (18.7 GPa Vickers hardness, 3.3 MPa m1/2 fracture toughness and 363 MPa strength) and excellent chemical and oxidation resistance. The synthesized composite powders were also densified to high densities (> 90 % of theoretical values) by SPS technique. The results obtained in this study can be seen as a new route to prepare important silicon-based structural ceramic powders with various compositions/properties from cheap starting materials which makes them potential for wide range of applications.

Vários motivos levaram a priorizarem o uso de fibras naturais em detrimento do uso de fibras sintéticas, sobretudo as razões sociais e ambientais. A fibra deste trabalho é extraída da folha da planta - Furcraea Andina (da Colômbia, onde usam esta fibra para a produção de artesanatos e sacos) e demonstra um grande potencial como reforço de compósitos poliméricos. Este trabalho avaliará o teste de impacto de Izod e Charpy de compósitos com matriz epóxi reforçada com diferentes porcentagens de fibras. Para os testes, as fibras de fique foram misturadas com à resina epóxi em um molde metálico retangular, o conjunto foi submetido a uma pressão e sofreram um processo de cura à temperatura ambiente durante 24 horas. As amostras produzidas foram submetidas aos ensaios seguindo a norma ASTM D256 (Método de Ensaio Padrão para à Determinação da Resistência ao Impacto do Pêndulo Izod para Plásticos) e a norma ASTM D6110 (Método de Ensaio Padrão para Determinar a Resistência ao Impacto Charpy para Plásticos). Os compósitos continham até 30% em volume de fibras de fique, que foram alinhadas ao longo de todo o comprimento da matriz. As amostras submetidas à ambos os ensaios (Izod e Charpy) tiveram suas fraturas analisadas por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Houve um aumento significativo da resistência ao impacto de acordo com o aumento da porcentagem volumétrica das fibras de fique. Esse desempenho pode estar associado ao mecanismo de fratura gerado a partir da adesão entre as fibra de fique e a matriz colaborando na absorção da energia de impacto, além do fato de que a fibra é capaz de dificultar a ruptura das amostras.

A precious metals refinery’s switch to personal computer-based, three-dimensional piping design saved many hours in the design of a South African precious metals refinery. Bateman Minerals and Industrial provided engineering, procurement and construction management services for Impala Platinum Limited-Refineries’ new $60 million refinery in Springs, South Africa. This project is one of the largest platinum refineries in the world. Bateman evaluated a new design method during this project that involved developing a three-dimensional model for the project. The new method saved time by reducing the man-hours required to generate complete project documentation, including plans, sections, isometrics and material takeoffs. The new method also saved design and construction time by allowing designers to detect clashes before construction began.

Over the past decade, the copper industry has been through an extended downturn followed by several years of sustained high copper price. A number of new technologies have been developed over the past 10 years aimed at reducing costs by decreasing energy, labor, and materials requirements, or by increasing metal recovery. The energy intensity of different copper extraction routes and different technologies varies considerably and this has a significant impact on the economics of extraction. Based on average ore grade materials, the total energy for the extraction of copper typically varies from about 24-26 MJ/lb (6.7-7.2 kWh/lb) for the mining, crushing, milling, flotation, smelting and refining route to about 14¬16 MJ/lb (3.9-4.5 kWh/lb) for the mining, crushing, heap leaching, solution extraction and electrowinning route. New technology developments are providing opportunities for significant reductions in energy consumption for copper extraction, representing energy savings up to 20-25% in some cases. In addition, in many cases, these new technologies have introduced environmental, safety and health benefits over the incumbent technology. Some of these technology developments have been more successful than others, and many hold great promise for application in the coming decade. This paper provides an overview of the technology developments that have occurred, and explores the underlying reasons behind successful implementation.

Early in the nineteenth century, coal from Clearfield County entered the eastern commercial market. Ashley reports that coal was moved down the Susquehanna River by ark from Clearfield to Columbia, a distance of 260 miles, as early as 18o4. Around 1850, the famous Moshannon or Lower Freeport bed was discovered. Several years later the Moshannon Basin was developed extensively, and the coal from this area soon acquired an enviable reputation as a high-quality industrial fuel. Today much of the original Moshannon Basin coal is worked out, and the Lower Kittanning bed has replaced the Lower Freeport bed as the principal source of production in southeast Clearfield County. With depletion of the thick underground deposits, the importance 'of Clearfield County as a coal Producer would have diminished rapidly, if it had not been for strip mining the thinner beds. About 60 percent of the coal produced in the county is strip-mined, and the trend toward this mining method is expected to continue as the older underground operations are exhausted. Many strip mines are working in beds that are too thin to be recovered economically by any other method.

The Cerro Matoso S.A. mine and smelter, in the Cordoba lowlands of northwestern Colombia, consist of a dedicated laterite nickel mine, ore blending, drying and an RKEF process to produce high-quality ferronickel. At a project investment of $400M, first production of ferronickel was in September 1982, and in its inaugural year CMSA produced 6,150 tons of contained Ni from a mined ore grade of 3.2% Ni. Initial operational difficulties resulted in a number of furnace run-outs, which impacted ramp up to design ore throughput of 128 dry t/h Since then CMSA has steadily incorporated process improvements and initiatives to take the single line operation to an ore throughput of 175 dry t/h. A second 175 dry t/h line was added in 2001 (investment of US$ 300M) to consolidate CMSA as one of the world's lowest cost Ni producers with an installed annual production capacity of 50-55,000 tons Ni. A utilização de lasers de pulsos ultracurtos é uma alternativa para a realização de microusinagem em superfícies de metais, com aplicações diversas em inúmeros segmentos industriais, além das áreas aeronáutica, aeroespacial e naval, onde há crescente preocupação com a eletrônica embarcada. Neste trabalho foram realizadas microusinagens em superfícies de titânio utilizando laser de pulsos ultracurtos de femtossegundos. Tal processo resultou em mínima transferência de calor para o material, evitando assim e deformação superficial da chapa de titânio e a formação de material ressolidificado na região ablacionada, que são inconvenientes presentes na utilização do laser chaveado de pulsos longos da ordem de nanossegundos. Foram executados três tipos de microusinagens, com variações nas distâncias entre as linhas usinadas. Foi verificado ainda que a molhabilidade aumenta quando há o aumento da distância entre linhas usinadas. Finalmente, para a alteração da superfície com uma ínfima remoção de material, constatou-se que a utilização de lasers de pulsos ultracurtos proporcionam grandes benefícios para a integridade do material ablacionado.

No processo de produção de gusa são frequentes as pesquisas em busca de meios de redução dos custos do produto final, além de adequações do processo à escassez de matéria-prima e tudo isso com o intuito final de garantir a lucratividade do setor. A preocupação com os impactos ambientais do processo também é assunto frequentemente levantado por profissionais da área devido à sua igualmente grande importância. Através da injeção de materiais pulverizados e gás pelas ventaneiras de um reator é possível conseguir economia de gastos com adição de carvão de topo. Por esse motivo e também visando à redução dos malefícios causados pela liberação de gases diretamente na atmosfera que surgiu a ideia da injeção de biogás pelas ventaneiras. Assim é possível evitar a liberação de CH4 que é altamente prejudicial à vida no planeta, além de reduzir o consumo de carvão de topo no Alto-Forno.Este trabalho discute a variação da Temperatura de Chama frente o efeito da utilização de biogás em Altos-Fornos, bem como o potencial energético desse gás tendo em vista a abundância de fontes de metano provenientes do setor bovino e suíno no Brasil.

O diboreto de titânio (TiB2) é um material cerâmico de alta dureza com uma grande potencialidade de aplicação tecnológica. No entanto, existe uma grande dificuldade de se produzir corpos bem sinterizados desse material, quando são usadas técnicas convencionais de sinterização. Neste trabalho, foi empregada uma técnica de processamento em altas pressões e altas temperaturas para produzir compactos de TiB2 com AlN. Amostras cilíndricas, com 5 mm de diâmetro e 7 mm de altura, foram processadas durante diferentes intervalos de tempo compreendendo os ciclos de sinterização. O principal objetivo do trabalho foi à realização do ensaio de torneamento para a avaliação de desempenho dos compósitos produzidos e sua relação com a quantidade de ciclos de sinterizaçãos em condições reais de trabalho. Os resultados obtidos apresentam perspectivas interessantes de utilização do processamento em alta pressão e alta temperatura para produção de inseros para aplicação na usinagem do ferro fundido nodular.

A constante busca por aumento de produtividade aliada à redução de custos com paradas para manutenção nos altos-fornos tem exigido incessantes evoluções tecnológicas em seus equipamentos. As ventaneiras são equipamentos de vital importância para o processo de redução do minério de ferro, e um importante parâmetro para um bom desempenho em processo é seu projeto de refrigeração. Tendo em vista que a otimização da refrigeração pode aumentar a vida do equipamento e reduzir custos com manutenções, o presente trabalho apresentará um estudo de evolução no projeto de refrigeração de ventaneiras com câmaras de refrigeração independente no mesmo corpo (câmaras interna e externa). Esta evolução tem como objetivo principal permitir a utilização da câmara interna mesmo após a falha da câmara externa, devido a sua refrigeração independente e otimizada, com aumento na vida útil do equipamento. A comparação destes projetos será feita utilizando ferramentas de simulação computacional CFD e os resultados serão apresentados na conclusão do trabalho.

The exploitation of primary ores using cave mining caused new challenges at the El Teniente mine that required changes to a number of conventional cave mining practices. For example, in the 1970s and 1980s, panel caving was introduced to manage certain geotechnical and operational conditions. Today, El Teniente mine is facing new challenges associated with deep cave mining and establishing its New Mine Level (NML) project, which is located 240 m below the Esmeralda operating cave.The engineering and development phases for this new project have been largely based on experience and lessons learned throughout the history of primary ore exploitation at El Teniente mine, particularly knowledge about seismicity control, the management of collapses and operational practices. For example, previous experience demonstrated that seismicity could be managed by preconditioning using large-scale hydraulic fracturing (HF). HF has been systematically applied in the column of ore above the undercut planned for the NML project and below the production or extraction level, where the main ventilation and haulage infrastructure are to be located.This paper discusses how this has been achieved and is based on previous experience of preconditioning using HF, which has been applied in the selection and management of exploitation techniques and associated planning strategies and design parameters for the NML project.CITATION:Pardo, C and Rojas, E, 2016. To maintain longwall continuity, NRE Wongawilli Colliery extracted the approximately 20-year-old Thompson Mains and in doing so, 20 roadways were holed into during longwall retreat. The orientation of these roadways with regard to the longwall face varied between (i) a parallel alignment where the entire roadway was simultaneously subjected to a significant increase in vertical stress on holing and (ii) a more favorable high angle of alignment, meaning that only a portion of the roadway was subjected to an increase in vertical stress on holing. In addition, the longwall holed into and was recovered in one of the existing roadways. The geotechnical environment presented several additional challenges during longwall retreat. The orientation of the stress field resulted in a major horizontal stress notch on the maingate and an elevation in the major horizontal stress in front of the longwall face during the retreat up to an adjacent goaf edge. The presence of geological structure zones also resulted in both swings in the major horizontal stress direction and increased levels of roof deformation. The gate road support designs were based on commonly accepted strata management techniques and principles. The support designs in the hole-through roadways were based on empirical design models generated from (i) aconceptual geomechanical model of pre-driven hole-throughand recovery roads and (ii) a worldwide database on pre-driven hole-throughand recovery roads. Imperative to the success of extracting the panel was a sitespecific strata management process. In this regard, consideration was given to the following: roof displacement monitoring in the gate roads (in particular, Longwall (LW) Acceleration Position), roof-to-floor convergence monitoring in the hole-through roadways, the ability of the mine to limit downtime prior to and during holing by utilizing an Authority to Mine (ATM) type process, and the use of Trigger Action Response Plans (TARP).

"Um-Gheig Pb-Zn representative sample was collected from the main adite of Um-Gheig mine along Red Sea coast in Egypt. Its chemical analysis shows that, it contains 16% Zn, 2.3% Pb, 0.1% Cd and 0.1% B as elements of interest. After H2SO4 agitation leaching, the chemical composition of Um- Gheig Pb-Zn deposit ore residue assayed 2.26% Pb, 1.5% Zn, 0.085 % B and 0.01% Cd. This residue was leached with 20% HCl at S/L ratio 1/3 for 2 hours at 80o C. The chloride leach liquor was found to contain 18 g/l Pb, 13 g/l Zn, 0.1 g/l Cd and 0.75 g/l B with the corresponding leaching efficiencies 79%, 86%, 100% and 88% respectively. Lead was precipitated from the chloride leach liquor using concentrated H2SO4 to obtain PbSO4 with precipitation efficiency 96%. While boron was extracted by the selective resin Amberlite IRA743 with loading efficiency of 80%. On the other hand, Zn and Cd were precipitated using Na2S solution with 86.7% and 100% recovery efficiencies respectively.IntroductionLead-zinc ores occur in Egypt in a few localities distributed along the Red Sea coast between El Qusier and Ras Banas.. The reserve of the ore deposits has been estimated by Soviet and German Experts to be about 900,000 Ton, [1]. Onal et al., [2] recovered Pb from Pb–Zn sample containing 10.17 % Pb and 10.98 % Zn from Aladag in Turkey. El-Sherif, [3] used concentrated HCl to leach lead-zinc ore sample of Um-Sammuki area in Egypt. As had been published by Marchioretto et al. [4], the precipitation of heavy metals with lime, sulfide and caustic soda are the most commonly used economical methods for metal removal. Lead was completely removed from the anaerobically digested sludge by precipitation with NaOH and Na2S at waste water treatment plants. Mahdy et al., [5] had successfully extracted boron from the bittern solution of Qaron Lake by ion exchange resin (Amberlite IRA 743). The extraction of boron was mainly depending upon the pH value. They extracted 80% of boron at pH 5.5, while at pH 3.9 about 74% boron was extracted. Kabay et al. [6] used the column-mode to remove 1g/l of boron from geothermal waste water of the Kizildere-Geothermal Power Station by using Diaion CRB 02 Nglucamine- type chelating resins. In this regard, the removal of lead, cadmium and boron allow the residue to be reclassified as non hazardous material."

"This presentation reviews three continuous centrifuge separators, the Falcon-C, Kelsey Jig and Multi-Gravity Separator, two units with possible synergies with centrifuges, the In-Line Pressure Jig and InLine Leach Reactor, and two centrifuge prototypes, the continuous Knelson and the Altair Jig. Typical applications, potential problems, promising synergies and general concentration mechanisms are discussed. A general discussion on the sources of information, the nature of the fluidization water flow, test work for potential centrifuge separations and the early life cycle of new technology, using centrifuge separators as an example, follows. A number of copycats are available, and are generically identified as “Knelsons.” This presentation will not address these units explicitly, but as possible synergies."

SiO2 and Al2O3 in the metallurgical slag of nickel laterite ore have great recycling values. In this work, Si and Al were extracted from the slag in NaOH based molten salts through alkali roasting and water leaching process for preparing zeolite materials. The extraction ratio of SiO2 increases with increased temperature and appropriately prolonged time, and more than 80% SiO2 can be recycled from the slag after roasting at 550°C. Si and Al from the slag are in the filtered liquor for producing zeolite materials, while Mg, Ca, Fe and other impurities remain in the leached residues. Adding Na2CO3 into the alkalin-slag roasting process can reduce the amount of pure NaOH used with minor decrease in extraction ratio of SiO2, while make better separation of Ca to avoid it getting into the filtered liquor. Adding Al2O3 into the alkalin roasting process can replace part of more expensive NaAlO2 addition that is required for preparing zeotite material, which may bring out a minor decrease in extraction ratio of SiO2 due to formation of NaAlSiO 4 in the filtered residues. Quality X zeolite and 4A zeolite materials can be made from the starting liquor containing Si and Al recycled from the laterite nickel slag through alkali roasting and water leaching process.

Over the last decade, instrumentation has been developed that allows the application of seismic reflection methods to groundwater and engineering problems. At the Geological Survey of Canada, we have been developing and testing shallow reflection techniques for mapping the bedrock topography and structure within the overburden. We have attempted to develop methods which can be implemented with a minimum investment in equipment and computing capabilities. The data are recorded on a l&channel engineering seismograph, using a single high-frequency geophone per channel, and a hammer or in-hole shotgun (“Buffalo gun”) as the seismic source. Processing and display of the data can be accomplished on an Apple II+ or IIe microcomputer and an Epson wide-track dot-matrix printer.

Lest you think that Hollis Dole is not interested in this symposium, let me just say that fie is flying back from Australia just to be here. He is heading up a United States delegation in Australia meeting on resource problems in the Pacific. And I believe he will be here about noon.

The quantitative separation of tantalum from columbium has been obtained through several liquid-liquid extraction processes. The valuable metals are separated by selective extraction from organic feed solution using a mineral acid or by selective extraction from aqueous feed solutions employing an organic solvent. The greatest degree of separation was obtained when organic ketones, particularly methyl isobutyl ketone, were used. Approximately 200 combinations of various organic solvents and mineral acids were tested as possible separation systems in which the tantalum or columbium content was extracted from organic solutions of the anhydrous pentachlorides.
