This paper presents the art of on-stream particle size and elemental analysis used at iron ore concentrators, followed by the results and experiences from several sites.Online particle size analysis is rather common at medium- to large-sized concentrators. Online X-ray fluorescence (XRF) elemental analysis, however, is only used in some iron ore concentrators, while it is a routine practice in base metal concentrator plants. Online XRF analysis is applicable for process monitoring and control down to four to five per cent silica by measuring Fe assays accurately. With lower silica content, direct measurement of silica and other light elements is required. Some light element analysers that are based on the prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) method have been developed, but they have not performed up to expectations with slurry analysis. Other methods have been tried though these have not been used beyond prototype installations. Operating online light element slurry analyser installations are not common in iron ore applications.There is an economic incentive to mine lower and variable grade iron ore resources, which require concentration and removal of several impurities to produce high-quality concentrates for pellet production. Monitoring such operations by on-stream analysis has significant economic benefits, and there is a need to develop a dependable slurry online analyser for Si, Al, Mg and other light elements. "INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines work reported by the Metallurgical Division 4/ in 1934 shows the possibility of producing artificial manganese ore by pre- ferential oxidation of manganese from spiegeleisen produced from manganiferous iron ores of the Cuyuna range, Minnesota. A three-step process is described as being capable of producing a ferrograde ore from this type of low-grade, domestic, strategic material. However, the melting temperature in the last step of the process that forms the manganese product is high, and the phosphorus content is not easily controlled. Also, the tenor of the manganese in the product is not comparable with other methods that use less process energy.Lofquist 5/ patented an improvement of the above three-step smelting method, in which sulfide was added to lower the melting point of the product.More recently, reputedly successful attempts have been made to reduce iron preferentially from manganiferous iron ores, simultaneously removing the phosphorus with the iron, by means of an unusually high temperature blast and excess coke.Anson G. Betts 6/ patented a process for the matte-smelting of manganese ores, in which the ore was mixed with pyrite and enough carbon or coke to serve as thermal energy and reducing, agent in a manner similar to the standard blast-furnace process. This process was intended to give pig iron, a manganese-iron matte, and a waste slag. Wood, Barrett, and Porath 7/ presented data on the treatment of low-grade, domestic, manganiferous iron ores and low-grade, domestic manganese ores by this Betts mattes pelting process."

If you believe that the goal of the space program should be a permanent, manned presence in space, then you believe in space mining. Historically, mining has been an integral part of the frontier. For the space frontier, mining is absolutely necessary. Any large-scale space facility must be built from materials mined in space. The reason is simple: the cost of getting material off the earth overwhelms all other costs. The cost of launching a pound of material from earth into low earth orbit ranges from $5000 to $10,000. Multiply this number by three to get to geostationary orbit. With the added expense of landing on the moon, an object is worth more than its weight in gold. Most space projects are impossible if materials must be hauled out of earth's enormous gravity well. For example, habitats (large structures in free-fall that simulate earth's gravity) and massive solar power satellites will take millions of tons of material to construct. Transportation economics alone dictate space as the source for oxygen, construction materials, and metals, among others. Space mining is not concerned with introducing materials for terrestrial use. The need for materials in space is infinite. The challenge for the mining industry is enormous.

Over a four-hour period of steady plant operation samples were taken at regular intervals frum points within the grinding and flotation circuits. Size fractions of each composite sample were analysed for lead and zinc values and a comparison made of the behaviour of the lead, zinc and gangue minerals, size by size throughout the whole circuit. Analysis of the breakage behaviour using dynamic mathematical models gave the rates of breakage of each size fraction of each main component. Simulated grinding experiments shaved that the main grinding circuit had some reserve capacity. In the lead flotation circuit all lead values between 150 mesh (Tyler) and 5 ¦m had excellent flotation characteristics, and a major proportion had a high rate of flotation which was practically the same for all sizes. Increase in overall lead recovery would require improvement of the flotation behaviour of ultra-fine lead minerals. These were slav floating and were responsible for approximately half the lead losses in the final zinc concentrate and one thiro of the lead losses in the final tails. All sizes of zinc values between 150 mesh and 7 ¦m floated well and the performance of the zinc flotation circuit was mainly limited by the relatively poor flotation of the very fine zinc values. Approximately 60 per cent of the zinc lost to the final tails lay within the -7 ¦m fraction. The overall flotation conditions were conducive to very good selective flotation of the major proportion of the values and limitations in metallurgical performance were mainly due to the properties of the ultra-fines.

An absorption-desorption model of particle reactivity was employed to describe the observed relationship between two apparently diverse phenomena which have been the subject of considerable study at the U.S. Bureau of Mines: (1) coal-rock dust reflectance and (2) coal-rock dust explosibility. The model accounts for heterogeneities in particle-size and material properties; however, in the present report, only particle-size distribution is considered. A mean particle-size parameter, appropriate to the explosion extinction process, is derived, and then taken as appropriate to describing optical reflectance. The derived form-to-function relationships for the two processes, when compared with experimental data, suggest that a problem exists with previously derived theory relating optical reflectance to rock dust concentration. A reexamination of that theory leads to a new theoretical expression, changed by a factor of 2, for the variation of rock dust concentration with reflectance which is in quite good agreement with experimental results. The current work offers justification for measuring and establishing rock dust requirements for specific coal dust size distribution(s) found in the mine-distributions that undoubtedly depend on the mining method and the type of coalbed.

Computer assisted finite element model analysis, originally developed to study stress distributions in aircraft, has been modified into a versatile mining program, that can be used to assist the engineer with predictions of mine subsidence. International Exploration, Inc. has developed an in-house finite element model program which incorporates a multitude of factors influencing mine subsidence such as mine design, physical rock properties, structure, faults, joints and topography. Finite element analysis of a mine model can mathematically determine the magnitude and direction of the principal stresses within each of the elements forming the model. By comparing the calculated in-situ stresses to the actual rock strengths, high risk regions within a mine can be identified. These potentially unstable regions of the mine can be allowed to fail within the model and the resultant stress redistribution and element movement calculated. Thus, the effects of the mine collapse at the surface can be predicted for the purpose of determining the potential damage, if any, that could occur to surface structures from deep mine failure. Stabilization materials can also be mathematically inserted into the model to design and analyze the effectiveness of subsidence prevention programs. Two examples are presented of the finite element program being used to predict mine subsidence at substantially different geologic and mining provinces in Pennsylvania.

The National Safety Competition was inaugurated in 1925 by the Bureau o1 Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, in cooperation With the Explosives Engineer. In the first nationwide contest, 210 mines and quarries were enrolled. In 1962, the thirty-eighth anniversary of the competition, 910 mines and quarries were enrolled. These participating plants were worked a total of 133,292,989 man-hours. Of the enrolled plants, 415 achieved injury-free operations tar the year, the largest number of perfect safety records in the history of the contest. In 1961 and 1962, the National Safety Competition was conducted and sponsored by the Bureau of Mines. In January 1963, the American Mining Congress became a cosponsor and participated with the Bureau in the award activities related to the 1962 contest. The basic purpose of the competition is to stimulate employees to work safely and too give impetus to the building of better accident-prevention programs. A well-designed and efficient safety program helps a company economically by cutting costs, preventing damage to equipment and materials, and reducing nonproductive delays. An effective safety program benefits the employee more directly because his injuries cause personal suffering, lost time, and lower living standards for his family. Since both have much to gain, management and workers should cooperate closely to eliminate disabling work injuries. The greater contest participation and the larger number of perfect safety records indicate increasing safety consciousness on the part of management and employees.

"Research on the control of exposure to respirable contaminants in mine atmospheres is conducted in five areas; 1) control of dust generation, 2) dilution, dispersion and collection of dust in mine airways, 3) characterization of dust particles, 4) interaction of dust and lungs, 5) relationship of mine environment, geology, and seam characteristics to dust generation and mobility. The distribution of research findings to the mining industry, to government agencies, and to scientists at other universities is accomplished in several ways.A data bank of respirable dust samples displaying a wide range of characteristics (low volatile, medium volatile, high volatile, silica fireclay, rockdust) has been established by the Center. This data bank is being utilized by Center researchers in a suite of medical, scientific, and engineering tests (FIGURE 26).The Center has honored requests for educational and informational materials from several sources, including MSHA and CANMET who received information on Center generated software and used the Center's expertise in developing a computer program for particle distribution model (DISFIT).The Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust has organized two dust conferences on respirable dust, the Coal Mine Dust Conference, held at West VirginiaUniversity, Morgantown, West Virginia from October 8-10, 1984 and Respirable Dust in the Mineral Industries: Health Effects, Characterization and Control, an international symposium on Respirable Dust in the Mineral Industries held at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania from October 14-16. 1986. These conferences were co-sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Mine Safety and Health Administration, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). On August 23-26, 1988, the VIIth International Pnuemoconioses Conference was held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. While not a sponsor of this conference, researchers in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust had significant participation with sixteen (16) papers presented (see Volume 8 of this series for abstracts and papers). These conferences provided a significant forum for the exchange of ideas on dust research and the interchange of research findings. The proceedings from these conferences are available from NTIS and ACGIH.In sum, significant benefits to mine worker health have resulted and should continue to result from the synergistic scientific, engineering, and medical research in respirable dust (FIGURE 27). As always, an important objective is the rapid dissemination of the results of this research to industry. Video tapes and the Bureau's Technology News series have been a very effective means of USBM technology transfer. Individual no-cost subscriptions to the Technology News series are available from the U. S. Bureau of Mines, Branch of Technology Transfer, 2401 E Street, N.W., Washington, DC, 20241."

"Geostatistical conditional simulations are becoming increasingly popular as tools that provide models of uncertainty at different stages of a mining project. They have been used as grade control tools in daily operations to assess the uncertainty of mineable reserves at the project’s feasibility stage, and to assess mineralization potential in certain settings. Other applications include assessment of recoverable reserves, resource and reserve classification, and drill hole spacing optimization studies. All large-scale applications of conditional simulations intend to benefit from the correct (or accurate) characterization of uncertainty, adequately describing the variability observed from the data and its effect on the final objective.The objective of this paper is to compare the ad-hoc uncertainty model provided by a traditional classification scheme with the probability intervals resulting from a conditional simulation model. It is argued that the uncertainty model derived from the use of classification schemes is of little practical use to the mining company or operation. The paper emphasizes differences in uncertainty based on the size of the mining unit considered, the extraction method, and local geological differences. Most importantly, it discusses confidence intervals for these mining units, as compared to the relative precision envisioned by a typical classification scheme.The application described in this paper is taken from a medium-sized Cu open pit and underground mine in northern Chile, and demonstrates the impact of several variables on the resulting conditional simulation models. It also compares a more traditional resource classification scheme applied, and the wide difference in local confidence intervals for each mining unit."

Em agosto/2014 foi introduzido o gás natural, GN, na matriz de combustíveis dos fornos de reaquecimento de placas da Linha de Tiras a Quente, em Ipatinga, eliminando o óleo combustível deste processo. Isto demandou o ajuste dos parâmetros do modelo matemático de controle automático do reaquecimento, que estava ajustado para a queima de mistura de gases siderúrgicos e óleo combustível. O ajuste foi realizado com base em resultados de experiências de medição das curvas de aquecimento com placas especialmente instrumentadas. Verificou-se que os gases da combustão na presença do GN ficam mais quentes na região do início do forno, próximo do canal de fumaça, elevando com isso o perfil térmico do forno. Em consequência, as temperaturas de desenfornamento da placa ficam mais elevadas em relação ao aquecimento na ausência do GN, comparando-se condições de processo e de material similares. Os ajustes do modelo foram implantados dentro do escopo de uma melhoria geral introduzida no sistema de controle automático dos Fornos, permitindo a determinação correta da temperatura de desenfornamento e a operação otimizada dos fornos do ponto de vista de aquecimento da placa.

"IntroductionSince the establishment of the star,just concentration of 2 mg/m3, a strong effort has made by mining engineers and researchers to provide better dust control equipment and procedures for underground coal mines.Particular areas of success have been implementation of better coal-cutting strategy to control dust generation, better design of water sprays for dust suppression and air movement, use of scrubbers, and improved design of face ventilation systems. A drastic improvement occurred over time such that the average dust concentrations for continuous miner operators dropped from 6.5 mg/m3 in 1968 to 1.3 mg/m3 in 1980 and for auger, cutter, longwall, and roof bolter occupations from 2.7 mg/m3 in 1973 to 1.6 mg/m3 in 1980 (Niewiadomski, 1983).While dust concentrations in mining sections have been dropping considerably, one problem area has been mining sections where quartz is a considerable portion of the airborne dust. The federal regulations require that quartz content must be held below 0.1 mg/m3 in the air regardless of the concentration of the total dust. This legislation limits the allowable dust concentration to a ""reduced standard"" of 10/ (% quartz) when the quartz content of respirable dust in the mine atmosphere is more than 5%. Today, approximately one-third of underground coal mining operations have designated areas with more stringent dust standards in place, and many mines experience considerable difficulty in meeting these standards (Jankowski, and Babbitt, 1989).It is well known that metal miners subjected to respirable dusts high in quartz have a higher incidence of silicosis than those exposed to dust low in quartz. However, the role of quartz in the development of coal workers' pneumoconiosis is still a highly controversial question, in spite of the large number of research projects devoted to this subject over the last 20 years. Because coal seams contain less quartz than metal ores and quartz often comes from sources outside the coal seam (e.g., roof and floor), it is difficult to relate studies that deal with the quartz content in coal seams and the incidence of coal workers' pneumoconiosis. Hamilton, Ogden, and Vincent (1983) have provided a plausible explanation for the incidence of the disease by hypothesizing that the quartz content does not affect the probability of developing pneumoconiosis until some threshold value (generally thought to be about 10%) is exceeded.The objective of the research studies summarized here was to obtain a better understanding of quartz occurrences in airborne coal mine dust by studying the variations of the quartz levels in different dust sizes and the relationship between the quartz content in airborne coal mine dust and the quartz content in the mined material. The implications of the results to control of dust in high-quartz sections will also be discussed."

Fracture grouting is a particular technique which can be used in soils and rocks with low permeability to increase groutability and penetration rates and to solve some special foundation problems by inducing limited and controlled zones of hydrofracture surrounding the injection source. The present paper describes the basic principles of hydrofracture and its application to grouting in deep foundations, and indicates some recognitions about the mechanisms and effects of fracture grouting.

U.S. Bureau of Mines research to develop diagnostic methods to locate and evaluate fires in abandoned mines and waste banks and techniques to extinguish such fires was applied to an abandoned 60-acre underground bituminous coal mine (Renton, Allegheny County, PA) to locate and extinguish three separated fire zones. Mine fire diagnostics interpret changes from baseline values in subsurface pressures, temperatures, and mine gas composition under imposed pressure gradients induced by a borehole exhaust fan. The effective gas sampling area surrounding each borehole is greatly enlarged. Sampling iterations, using a "communicating" boreholes set, provide "fire signature" information for locating both heated and cold areas. Time-dependent monitoring differentiates heating and cooling periods resulting from combustion front movement and/or fire extinguishment activities. A water injection with fume exhaustion extinguishment effort involved injecting water through boreholes to quench the heated zones while exhaust fans actively removed heated gases from the mine. The technique was ineffective as implemented, primarily because of inadequate spreading of water from the injection points. The Bureau's diagnostic method determined the fire locations and the effectiveness of the water injection with fume exhaustion extinguishment technique.

But in Colombia these mountains are divided into three distinct ranges known as the Western, Central and Eastern ranges of the Andes. United at the southern end, they spread out like three fingers in a northerly direction across the Republic of Colombia. These great natural barriers have only in recent years been tarried by railroads or wagon roads, and they have had their effect upon the history of the country, both political and ethnological. The value of protective clothing in the prevention of injuries has long been recognized in many of the leading industries , but the adoption of the idea into mine safety programs is comparatively new . Once started , however , the idea has grown rapidly and the results already obtained by mining companies have shown that it is fundamentally sound . Both coal and metal mining companies are rapidly adopting these protective measures , and since 1924 many mines have become well equipped with eye , head , and foot protection . At the present time approximately 70 percent of the employees in the anthracite mines of Pennsylvania are provided with safety hats . At many metal mines all employees are provided with safety hats, shoes , and goggles . The Pennsylvania mining law provides that all shaft · workers in anthracite mines shall wear protective hats . In According to a study³ made of the nature of 3,485 temporary injuries and of the parts of the body of underground coal mine employees most exposed to occupational hazards , the head and face were injured 665 times , the hands 856 times , and the feet 565 times . Of 2,555 temporary injuries in metal mines , the head and face received 484 , the hands 788 , and the feet 357 . a similar study4 made by a coal -mining company for the year 1928 , of 556 injuries the scalp received 9 , the skull. 4 , the eyes 47 , the hands 62 , the thumbs 21 , the fingers 141 , the ankle , the feet 51 , and the toes 35 . In 2023, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell membrane electrode assemblies accounted for about 62% of the global fuel cell market share and this demand is expected to grow. Commercialisation requires technologies capable of cost-effective, high-volume manufacturing. The membrane electrode assembly is crucial and represents a significant cost to polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell manufacturing. Manufacturing the electrode components for membrane electrode assemblies at high volumes can reduce production costs while delivering on the forecasted industry demands. Roll-to-roll is a mature coating technology applied in various manufacturing industries such as batteries, printed electronics, microelectronics, photovoltaics, printing, paper consumables, etc., with significant potential for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell manufacturing. While the high-volume production process for membrane electrode assembly manufacturing differs from laboratory-scale, the membrane electrode assembly structure remains unchanged. Roll-to-roll is a continuous coating process with speeds of 10 m/min being achieved. In this work, MicrogravureTM and slot-die coating methods have been adopted and have shown promising outcomes for producing gas diffusion electrodes for membrane electrode assemblies. An overview of the MicrogravureTM and slotdie coating methodologies is provided, and a discussion on preliminary results and challenges are presented. Work on MicrogravureTM gas diffusion electrode manufacturing has already achieved comparable performance with spray-coated gas diffusion electrodes. The influence of coating parameters and drying on the coated catalyst layer quality is discussed.

According to the temporal and spatial distribution of regional metallogenesis, thePacific Rim can be divided into four global metallogenetic systems. The Asia-Australia W-Sn metallogenetic belt is the typical representative of intracontinental metallogenetic systems. This belt resulted from Mesozoic and partly pre-Mesozoic tectonic magmatism, mainly related to S-type granite of crustal source that was generated by collisional orogeny combined with oceanic subduction in intracontinental and continental margin settings. Based on the concept of metallogenetic series, there is a group of mineralised ore types showing a definite spatial and temporal distribution from endogenetic to exogenetic. These metallogenetic series are widely distributed in the Asia-Australia W-Sn metallogenetic belt, and are well developed in Southeast China. Five metallogenetic series and two petro-minerogenesis evolution models have been established according to their tectonic settings, various types of granitoids and metallogenetic evolution.

Fibras de rami (Boehmeria nivea) estão entre as lignocelulósicas naturais com potencial para utilização em compósitos poliméricos. O presente trabalho avalia a resistência ao impacto deste tipo de compósito. Corpos de prova normalizados foram confeccionados com percentuais de até 30% em volume de tecido de rami alinhadas ao longo de todo o comprimento. As fibras foram embutidas sob pressão em matriz de resina poliéster do tipo ortoftálica curada à temperatura ambiente por 24 horas. Os corpos de prova foram ensaiados em pêndulo de impacto Izod e as superfícies de fratura analisadas por microscopia eletrônica de varredura, MEV. A resistência ao impacto aumentou exponencialmente com a quantidade relativa de tecido de rami reforçando o compósito. Este desempenho foi associado à dificuldade de ruptura imposta pelas fibras bem como ao tipo de trincas resultantes da interação tecido de rami/matriz de poliéster que ajuda a absorver a energia do impacto.
