This study was conducted to provide experimental evidence on the effect of modifications of gasoline front-end composition on the photochemical specific reactivities of automotive emissions. Evaporative and evaporative-plus-exhaust emissions from an automobile operated with four fuels of different volatility and varying levels of C.-C5 olefins were irradiated in a 10040 environmental chamber at three sets of initial hydrocarbon-nitrogen oxides concentrations. Reactivity was measured and expressed in terms of rate-of-NO2 formation and dosages of oxidant, peroxyacetyl nitrate, and formaldehyde. The compositional changes that were necessary in reducing fuel volatility were found to have no significant effect on the reactivity of the emissions. However, replacing C4-C5 olefins with saturated components resulted in sharp decreases in all reactivity manifestations observed for the evaporative emission samples. A lesser influence (of C4-C5 olefin replacement) was found with the composite exhaust-plus-evaporative samples; the effect that was observed could be attributed to the evaporative emission portion of the sample. The data therefore suggest that saturation of front-end fuel olefins had no large effect on exhaust emission reactivity.

Growth characteristics of Co-rich crusts from the Western Pacific have been approached. The thick crust shows 3 structural layers: compact upper layer, porous middle layer, and compact lower layer. The middle and lower layers have obviously different microscopic structure, color, and luster. Preliminary study of Calcareous nanofossils in one crust shows that the crust began to grow since Paleogene. The porous middle layer was formed from late Miocene to late Pliocene (Ca. 0.5 ~ 11.9Ma) and the compact lower layer was formed from late Paleocene to late Oligocene (Ca. 56.3 ~ 23.2Ma). The sedimentary hiatus of a 14.26Ma was observed between the middle and lower layers. The boundary between them to be Oligocene/Miocene (O/M) shows an important message on growth age.

An ilmenite ore from the Murray Basin was initially characterised using combined X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA) techniques. XRF analysis showed the ilmenite sample contained 58.7 wt per cent TiO2 and 26.2 wt per cent Fe2O3. Major impurities included: Cr2O3 (4.5 wt per cent), Al2O3 (2.7 wt per cent), SiO2 (1.9 wt per cent), Mn3O4 (1.5 wt per cent) and MgO (1.1 wt per cent). Manganese and magnesium were present as solid solution components within the ilmenite lattice while the elevated Al2O3 and SiO2 levels were due to separate aluminosilicate gangue minerals. Chromium was associated with discrete chrome spinel gangue phases of variable composition, (Fe,Mg)(Cr,Al)2O4. Quantitative XRD analysis of the sample identified rutile (12 per cent), ilmenite (11 per cent), and pseudorutile (67 per cent) as the main titanium-containing phases and chrome-rich spinels (seven per cent) as the major impurity phase. Minor quartz, aluminosilicates, zircon and monazite were also present. The ilmenite was mixed with synthetic graphite, pressed into pellets and reduced carbothermally in nitrogen at 1200 and 1400°C with C/O molar ratio of 1.2. Titanium oxide in the ilmenite was converted to titanium oxycarbonitride. Iron oxides were reduced to metallic iron. The Changes of impurities as a result of reduction was examined by SEM and EPMA analyses. Iron and chromium oxides within Fe-rich chromite were reduced to form a Fe-Cr-C alloy. Mg-rich chrome spinels were partly reduced at 1200°C. Zircon particles were not reduced at 1200°C, but were significantly reduced at 1400°C, with the particles becoming porous and the silicon being removed.

IT is now generally admitted by experts that at least so far as rapid progress is concerned the Alpine system of tunnel-driving is superior to any other. This is perhaps natural in view of the record of experience in driving tunnels through the Alps. These great mountain-chains cannot be treated in the ordinary way by shaft-sinking and driving headings, thus multiplying the points of attack. The work must be done from the ends only, hence speed in driving is of the utmost importance; and, as necessity is the mother of invention, the concentration of effort to make progress has resulted in an organization and in mechanical appliances that have produced results so much in excess of the usual practice, even in America, that a discussion of the subject in detail should be of much value to the engineer and contractor. The first Alpine tunnel was the Mont Cenis, length 7.5 miles, driven with a progress that averaged about 7.75 ft. per day. Next came the Saint Gothard, 9.5 miles long, 18 ft. per day; Arlberg, 6.5 miles long, 27.25 ft. per day; Simplon, 12.25 miles long, 36 ft. per day. The figures represent progress when driving from two headings, so that by dividing them in two we get the daily single-heading progress. The latest of the Alpine tunnels is the Loetschberg, now being driven. In this work the world's record has been beaten by a single day's record in one heading of 36 ft. and by an average daily record in. one heading of 29.5 feet. The Alpine range forms a natural barrier between a large section of northern and southern Europe. This paper discusses various issues surrounding the metallurgical control for furnaces, especially focusing on processes with long time-constants and æmetallurgical memoriesÆ. Examples will focus on furnaces accepting particulate and sometimes ill-defined feeds, eg submerged-arc furnaces, blast furnaces, secondary scrap smelting operations, recycling operations, waste incinerators, etc. Generally, because of the usually higher metallurgical time constant of these furnaces, these reactors have to be controlled in a feed-forward manner by the use of a hybrid of æblack boxÆ or empirical and ægrey boxÆ semi-empirical first principles metallurgical modelling and simulation techniques in a supervisory metallurgical control capacity.

This study was carried out in a bid to survey Ganboke gold mine in Pala, Mayo-Kebbi Province, southwestern Chad. The Ganboke mine is now being prepared for investigation and development, and the research sought to perform rock properties tests of relevant rocks through its geological survey, rock mass evaluation, and in-situ and laboratory tests and analyze the stability by the means of limit equilibrium method, thereby suggest appropriate methods to design the pit slope and individual benches in Ganboke mine. Targenting GS1-GS1' section with the depth of 180 m and GS2-GS2' section with the depth of 150 m in the survey area, we set the height of the bench at 10 m and 15 m, and the angle of bench at 60o and 70o, respectively, and then reviewed the stability for dried condition and saturated condition. The result of examination indicated that it would be appropriate to set the bench height at 10m and the bench angle at 60o in developing the mine slopes concerned. A study was made of the instrumentation and technique of atomic absorption spectroscopy developed by Walsh of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (C.S.I.R.O.), Australia.The method was evaluated for the determination of silver in lead sulphide concentrate. The precision of the procedure developed is equal to that of the uncorrected fire assay method and the accuracy is greater.Brief mention is made of the use of this technique for the determination of silver and other elements in ores and concentrator products.INTRODUCTIONThe fire assay method, although accepted on a world-wide basis as the umpire method for the determination of silver in ores and concentrates, is freely recognized as yielding results which are lower than actual due to unavoidable losses.King (1934) investigated the influence of the cupelshape, size and material on silver losses during cupellation. Using 100 mg silver prills he recorded silver losses ranging between l. and 10 per cent under extreme conditions and averaging approximately 2 percent under conditions which might be considered normal. Guerin (1957) made a detailed study, under carefully controlled conditions in a furnace similar to that described by Esdaile (1952), of the effect of temperature on silver losses during cupellation. Resource development conflicts arise largely due to differences in worldview between those who support and those who oppose development. This paper illustrates how societies and civilizations with different worldviews produce different levels of creative and economic energy. A questionnaire was created to build a database of responses to test whether worldview and resource development are correlated. Factor and multivariate regression analysis determined correlations for respondent groupings. Results showed a positive correlation between the respondents\u2019 worldviews and their attitudes toward resource development. Correlations became stronger as the homogeneity of the sample subgroups increased.

"Titanium alloy was prepared from titania-bearing blast furnace slag (Ti-BF slag) by aluminothermic process in an induction furnace. The effects of aluminum amount on the titanium silicon yield and titanium recovery ratio were studied. The phase transformation and chemical composition of the prepared alloy were investigated by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) respectively. It was found that the mass fraction of silicon and aluminum increased with increasing the aluminum amount, however, the mass fraction of titanium increased first and then decreased with increasing the aluminum amount. Furthermore, both the titanium alloy yield and titanium recovery ratio increased with the increase of aluminum amount. The main phases of the alloy were TixSiy and AlTi3. The titanium alloy samples prepared in various conditions had a composition (wt.%): 38–50% Ti, 29-34% Si, 4-11 Al%, 1.6-2.2 Mn%.IntroductionPanzhihua and Xichang regions in the southwest of China are rich in vanadium-titanium magnetite containing iron, vanadium, titanium and gangue. According to the characteristics of the resource, iron and vanadium are successfully recovered with a blast furnace process and a converter process. However, most content of titanium are entered in the blast furnace slag with TiO2 22% -26% and metallic Fe 2%–6% called Ti-BF slag. Due to the dispersed distribution of Ti in various fine grained mineral phases with a complex combination between Ca, Al and Si, it is difficult to recover the Ti components[1]. This slag is generated at a current rate of 3.6 million tons per year, which adds to the existing 70 million tons of slag produced so far[2]. The slag has had to be piled as large as the mountains, which not only waste of resources but also cause a pollution of the environment. Therefore, the study of integrated utilizing Ti-BF slag has become very significant."

Research efforts by the U.S. Bureau of Mines include running a series of displacement-discontinuity, boundary-element models to simulate the gateroad design at an underground coal mine in northwestern Colorado. The initial mine design is a yield-abutment chain pillar arrangement in a three-entry, longwall gateroad system. Pressure effects from mining the first and second panel were recorded using borehole pressure cells (BPCs). These field data were then compared directly to the model output. Observed yielding in the field was approximated by reducing material property values and/or removing pillar elements in the model. Model results using this calibration technique mirrored the field measurements consistently. Using the calibrated model parameters, a suite of models was run simulating an experimental entry design: exchanging the yield and abutment pillar locations. These model results reflect a 20¬to 33-percent reduction in core stresses in the yield pillar during mining of the second panel. Improved pillar and entry conditions are suggested by these predictive results. The design modifications were then implemented at the mine along a 150-m (500-ft) test section. Field observations and measurements from the experimental design test site compared favorably with trends of the model predictions.

Ghomroud water conveyance tunnel project is under construction using shield Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) for a total length in excess of 50 km. Phase 1 of the project included 36 km of tunnel divided into four lots (1, 2, 3, and 4) of nine km each. Lots 3 and 4 of this tunnel for a total length of 18 km were combined into one award and have been constructed using a double shield (DS) TBM or one path system. Extreme ground convergence in some sections of the tunnel has stalled TBM performance in early reaches, due to face collapse and shield jammings. This paper presents the latest update on the tunnel progress and impact of ground convergence on machine performance based on the information obtained from field observations. Also, the method and results of tunnel convergence measurements were studied in conjunction with geological parameters and an attempt was made to correlate TBM operational parameters and ground convergence. The result of the analysis indicates a good correlation between machine?s operational parameter and tunnel convergence and can be used as an indicator of the potential for high rates of convergence. An early warning on ground convergence is essential for taking precautionary measures to avoid TBM jamming and related long delays and costs.

The alliance is in the form of a Rock to Specification (R2S™) service, one of Orica’s Blast Based Services (BBS™). The ultimate goal was to facilitate the rapid expansion of material movement from 26 to 41M m3 (34 to 53M yd3) per annum while maintaining a reliable ore supply to the mill.

The safe operation of gas transmission pipelines is increasingly coming under the spotlight. Increasing environmental pressure is also forcing pipeline owners and operators to ensure the integrity of their pipelines. The integrity of a pipeline is usually determined using intelligent pigging, often referred to as In Line Inspection (ILI). However, in many cases, gas pipelines cannot be pigged for a variety of reasons. The National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) has recently published Recommended Practice (RP) 0502, referred to as the External Corrosion Direct Assessment (ECDA) Methodology to assist pipeline owners with assessing the condition of pipelines that cannot be pigged. 2. External Corrosion Direct Assessment - NACE RP 0502 The ECDA Methodology is conducted in four phases as follows: ? Pre-Assessment ? Indirect Inspection ? Direct Examination ? Post-Assessment In the Pre-Assessment Phase, all the relevant historical and current data relating to the pipeline in question is reviewed. This covers pipeline, construction, soils/environmental, corrosion control and operational data. The aim of the Pre-Assessment Phase is to determine whether ECDA is feasible, and if so, to define the ECDA Regions and finally to select the Indirect Inspection Tools that will be used for each region. McLanahan RSS14x50 scrubber screens have individually processed over 50 Mt of Pilbara iron ore. The first stage of separation in these plants with abrasive, high specific gravity, large lumps is an extremely arduous duty with high wear rates. With the Scrubber Screen layout this occurs in the attached trommel section. The initial supply of the replaceable trommel panels were of steel-backed rubber with a service life of approx. six weeks. Site Personnel established a goal of 26 week wear life in conjunction with 100 per cent reliability and while field trials were undertaken using a variety of hardened and cast steels that demonstrated wear life to the nominated requirement some unpredicted failures still occurred. With a long evaluation time and challenges to create repeatable conditions with field testing, a purpose built test unit was designed and constructed to allow controlled evaluation of a number of materials and designs. During 2016 tests were conducted with eight different materials, of varying thickness to simulate impact conditions and a number of aperture profiles to evaluate both impact and abrasion effects. From these results two designs were selected for full scale implementation to confirm the nominated goals. EXAMINATION by metallographic and X-ray diffraction means of an austenitic steel containing 0.06 pct C, 1.26 pct Mn, 0.38 pct Si, 21.15 pct Ni, 18.72 pct Cr, 3.07 pet W, and 9.14 pet Mo indicated that a - phase, which had not been reported in the literature, existed in this steel. Both the s and car-bides of the M6 C type were present in the as-forged steel. The carbides dissolved completely in the aus-tenite at approximately 2200°F (1205°C). The s, however, was present at all temperatures up to the solidus temperature of the steel at approximately 2375°F (1300°C). Ferrite was not found in any condition of the steel. The faintness of some of the s lines in X-ray patterns obtained from samples of the steel made it desirable to isolate the s prior to verification of its entire pattern. Ligas a base de zircônio são utilizadas na indústria nuclear devido à baixa absorção de nêutrons e alta resistência à corrosão em ambientes de alta temperatura e pressão. Nas condições de operação essas ligas estão sujeitas à fragilização pelo hidrogênio. Este trabalho visa avaliar o efeito do hidrogênio na liga ZirBrasil-1, produzida em forno elétrico a arco VAR (Vacuum Arc Remelting) nas condições: encruada e tratada termicamente. As análises de difração de raios-X indicam a existência de uma matriz Zr-a, hexagonal compacto, para todas as condições de tratamentos térmicos. Após a hidrogenação, ocorreu a formação de ZrH e ZrH2. Os hidretos formados são de pequeno volume e não conectados para as amostras laminada e tratada a 700°C/1 h e 800°C/2 h, sendo que a condição de 800°C por 6 h obteve a maior quantidade de hidretos por área e alguns hidretos conectados. Em todas as condições os hidretos se encontram espaçados ao longo da espessura das amostras. Os resultados de microdureza Vickers indicam a ocorrência de precipitação para tratamentos a 800°C e confirmam o efeito fragilizador do hidrogênio. A liga encruada absorve maior quantidade de hidrogênio, com início do processo de absorção ocorrendo após 12 horas, já a amostra tratada a 800°C por 6 h absorveu apenas 0,5%H e iniciou a absorção após 26 h. O conjunto de resultados permite concluir que a amostra recristalizada é a indicada para o desenvolvimento do processamento termomecânico, quando comparada a condição encruada devido ao maior tempo para início do processo de absorção e menor quantidade absorvida de hidrogênio.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION At the Star mine, Hecla Mining Co., located in Burke, Shoshone County, ID, the mining method is horizontal slicing (timbered or untimbered) cut-and-fill using hydraulic sand backfill. Back stoping as well as breast stoping is used; see Fig. 1. The annual produc¬tion from all cut-and-fill mining is 259 816 t (286,400 st). The average depth ranges from 366 to 2408 m (1200 to 7900 ft). A majority of the tonnage comes from an average depth of 2240 m (7350 ft). Average travel time to the stope is 1 hr. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS Size and Ground Conditions The ore body is 610 to 1219 m (2000 to 4000 ft) along the strike and 2408 m (7900 ft) on the dip, with an average vein width of 2.6 m (8.5 ft). The dip is essentially vertical. The ore body is heavily sheared and broken on the main fault structures; it is more competent on the wall veins but everywhere subject to rock bursting at depth. The hanging and footwalls are strongly fractured on the main fault structures, again more competent but still fractured on the wall veins. All host rock is Revett quartzite. Value and Production Requirements The ore value is $56 per ton. Production require¬ments are 1089 t/ d (1200 stpd), five days per week. Why Cut-and-Fill? The slusher extraction method is the most satisfac¬tory and practical for narrow vertical veins with sheared walls. The method must be quite selective to be com¬mercial. The veins are too narrow for rubber-tired ex¬traction and the grade is not high enough to make resuing practical. DETAILED DESCRIPTION Development Access to the main shaft is by the 3.2-km (2-mile) main haulage tunnel. The level intervals in the vertical timbered shafts are 61 m (200 ft). Vein development is by crosscut and laterals located 30.5 m (100 ft) into the vein wall. Vein crosscuts are on ±61 m (200 ft) centers. Access to the vein is by raises carried up with the stope. The raises are equipped with four wood¬cribbed chutes (two orepasses reinforced with angle irons, one manway, and one timber slide, Figs. 2-6). The initial cut is located 6.7 m (22 ft) above the main level (Fig. 1). Stoping Cycle Detail Sampling: Grab samples are taken from the mine cars. Channel sampling of the faces and backs is done when necessary. Drilling: For stope drilling, Ingersoll-Rand 300M percussion drills are used, with Ingersoll-Rand 300M and Gardner-Denver RB83M stopers, used for back stoping. Breasting down is done with Gardner-Denver S83FM jacklegs. The back stoping rounds are 0.9 to 1.8 m (3 to 6 ft) and the breast stoping rounds 1.5 to 3m (5 to 10 ft). Blasting: For stope blasting DuPont Tovex 100 watergel with fuses and igniter cord is used primarily. Approximately 60% of the blasting is done with am¬monium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO). For development headings and shaft sinking, DuPont Drivex watergel with Ensign Bickford Nonel Primadet primers is is used. Mucking: Broken ore is removed entirely by slusher in the stopes. These are mostly 3.7-7.5-kW (5-10-hp) Ingersoll-Rand air-powered or 7.5-37.3-kW (10-50-hp) Ingersoll-Rand electric-powered. In the horizontal de¬velopment headings Eimco 12B and 21 and Atlas Copco LM-56 overshot mucking machines and a 0.76 (1 cu yd) hydroelectric Wagner HST-1 LHD (load-haul-dump) unit are used. Rockway for Extraction: The cribbed chutes (Fig. 7) are nearly vertical and hexagonal in shape and are made of spaced 152 x 203-mm (6 x 8-in.) timber, reinforced with varying weights and sizes of angle iron, depending on wear requirements. Rectangular cribbed chutes are used where ground pressure is not a problem. Cribbing is added in 2.4 or 3-m (8 or 10-ft) extensions accord¬ing to the floor height (whether timbered or untimbered). See Figs. 8 and 9. Backfilling: Backfilling is done with hydraulic sand consisting of classified mill tailings at 65% solids. The fill contains approximately 20% 325-mesh fines. The tailings are pumped 3353 m (11,000 ft) at 50-55% solids 22.7 dry t/h (25 dry stph) with a duplex piston pump. Cycloning increases the tailings density to 65% solids. This work is a continuation of a paper presented in the 32nd DFI Annual Conference, Colorado 2007, titled ?Hollow Core Bar Micropiles - Design parameters interpreted from 260 load tests.? The first paper presented the results of the verification and proof tests performed for the retrofit of two bridges with hollow core bars that used 260 micropiles. It included an interpretation of the unit bond values in the different soils where micropiles were installed. Recently two additional bridges within the same geological environment were also retrofitted using 144 hollow core micropiles. This paper includes the interpretation of the additional data from the proof tests performed and refines recommended values for design of hollow core bar micropiles in soils similar to those encountered in these two projects. The authors believe that the data collected will significantly add to the relatively small existing database on micropile tests and may also be useful during implementation of the LRFD design methodology.
