The paper is aimed to assess the possibilities of usage of pyrometers and thermal cameras to study ventilation and environmental conditions in underground mines. Surface and underground thermovision tests were carried out in the Rudna mine and included channels and diffusers of some selected fan stations, shaft crest closures, engines of central fans and their instrumentation. The thermovision underground tests in the Rudna mine consisted of ventilation barriers, underground fans, temperature of rocks, ventilation machines, parts of belt-conveyors and electric machinery.

Regions with extensive reserves of brown coal but with inadequate deposits of hard coal provide a particularly suitable field for the application of brown coal petrology.In fact, this discipline is indispensable where brown coal is to form the basis for high-quality products of upgrading. Both chemical and physical analyses are required in addition to the techniques employed in coal petrology, but it is the macropetrographic and the microscopic investigations that are of decisive and specific importance.Foremost among the methods of upgrading brown coal is briquetting. From the raw materials aspect the biochemical rank of coal (i.e. the type of deposit) and the coal variety (i.e. the lithotype) exert a marked influence on briquette strength. These are also the significant factors in the suitability of a brown coal for high temperature carbonization; here the demands on coal quality are even more exacting if adequately sintered and therefore high-strength lump chars are to be obtained. The principle applies also to the char from low temperature carbonization. There are close relationships between the tar yield and the remission of the coal.The reflectivity measurement therefore provides a rapid method for evaluating the suitability of a brown coal for low temperature carbonization. Similar correlations have been established between the content of extraction bitumen (raw montan wax) and the remission. Petrological investigations show that the quality of the coal bitumen is a function of the type of deposit and of the lithotype.

Canada is a world class producer and exporter of minerals and mineral products. Today's highly mechanized Canadian open pits use state-of-the-art equipment and support technology. They are taking advantage of larger equipment, including in pit crushing and conveying, truck dispatch systems and electronic management tools. Mine planning is computerized. Environmental issues are dealt with in all phases of planning, and equipment modifications are pursued to keep them functioning in the hostile Canadian north. In 1991, Canada's mineral production (excluding fuels but including coal) totaled $C 16.9 billion, a decline of 13.8% from the 1990 total of $C19.6 billion. It is a major producer of nickel, zinc, asbestos, potash, molybdenum and uranium. Canada is also an important source of copper and iron ore (Fig. 1).

Nowadays, technology has improved to extract dimensional stone blocks at quarry sites and also to process these at processing plants for making slabs and tiles. In the process of quarrying and processing, performance evaluation of machinery is very important to achieve optimum output at minimum cost with improved technology. Cost analysis of improved technology includes parameters such as manpower, energy consumption, tool consumption, depreciation, maintenance and also others. The chainsaw machine with long boom and rail in marble quarries and multi-diamond wire saw machine for slab making from granite blocks at processing plants have recently been introduced in India. Thus, a study was carried out under a research project on these machines to assess their suitability. In this paper, performance evaluation and cost analysis of chainsaw and multi-diamond wire saw have been carried out with existing machines on the basis of research findings.

Their contributions have had significant and lasting impacts on the mineral and mining industry; these individuals were selected for being mavericks, thought leaders, researchers, educators, mentors, wealth builders and philanthropists.Professor John M. Guilbert, Dr. Leo J. Miller, Robert E. (Bob) Murray and Douglas (Doug) B. Silver will join 240 other mining industry luminaries when formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame on Sept. 29, 2018. Additionally, the Prazen Living Legend of Mining Award will be presented to the Freeport- McMoRan Foundation. Guilbert was a renowned geologist and professor of economic geology at the University of Arizona; he had a distinguished 50-plus year career in academia and business. Guilbert, together with J. David Lowell, worked on the most important breakthrough in mineral exploration in the last 100 years, the Porphyry Copper Model. This work, known as the Lowell and Guilbert Model, was utilized by exploration geologists worldwide over the next four decades to discover hundreds of millions of tons of copper metal and numerous profitable mines including the prosperous Bajo de la Alumbrera copper mine in Argentina. Guilbert was a founder of The World Museum of Mining in Butte, MT. He was the recipient of countless awards including the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) R.A.F. Penrose Medal as well as the D.C. Jackling Award from the SME.Dr. Leo J. Miller was a maverick in the mining industry and no armchair geologist. He believed that active fieldwork, on foot with a rock pick, was indispensable for exploration. His basic tenet was to absorb as much information about an exploration target up front, formulate ideas – sometimes novel ones — and then get out into the field to prove those ideas. Miller was known to diverge from the standard interpretation of the geological processes, which formed the mineral deposits, and to apply innovative applications of high-tech tools to more usual exploration programs. This approach resulted in a 50-plus year career that included the discovery of the Kidd Creek massive sulfide deposit and the development of the Lee Creek phosphate deposit; which other explorers had previously given up on, believing whatever phosphate might be present would be too difficult and expensive to mine. The recipient of many honors and awards, Miller received the SME Robert M. Dreyer award in recognition of outstanding achievement in ore discoveries."

"A 28-year study of cross folds leads to the conclusion that the northwest-southeast folds recognized in many areas of North America are part of a regional pattern. Detailed examination of over 650 geological maps and reports of Ontario indicates that this folding can be traced across the province. Evidence is presented that this fold pattern played an important part in determining the pattern and scale of intrusion, that its recognition in the field can aid in defining stratigraphy, folding and faulting, and that it may have played an important role in channeling hydrothermal or magmatic mineralization. IntroductionThe concept of regional cross folding in Ontario is not new. W.H. Gross (1955) discussed regional cross folds in the Archean of Northwestern Ontario, and A.M. Goodwin (1961) referred to regional cross folds in the Archean of Ontario and Quebec. However, the interpretation in this paper is new.The writer saw a cross fold for the first time, underground, at Little Long Lac Gold Mines in Geraldton, Ontario, in 1951. This recalled the ""transverse folds"" on E.R. Faribault's classical maps of Nova Scotia, published by the Geological Survey around the turn of the century; M.E. Hurst's cross fold(s) at Timmins, Ontario (Figure I); and the cross folds mapped by A.W. Jolliffe in the Yellowknife area of the Northwest Territories. All these mapped cross folds had one thing in common with the fold at Little Long Lac: A northwest-southeast axial trend. Were such cross folds of purely local extent, or might they be indicative of a widespread regional fold pattern? If so, has such folding any significance for mineral exploration or potential?By 1959, based on a study of about 1000 Canadian geological maps and reports, including 291 in Ontario, the writer reached the conclusion that cross folding trending northwest-southeast is so widespread as to constitute a pattern of folding, and that such cross folding should produce changes in plunge along pre-existing greenstone fold belts."

Explosions in underground coal mines have been a serious safety concern since the advent of mining; despite significant technological advances, they are still occurring. Parameters such as barometric pressure, geological changes, and changes in ventilation can contribute to an explosion. These factors can be monitored with available and developing technologies to create algorithms that predict when explosions are more likely to occur. This paper reviews current underground atmospheric monitoring systems and related regulations around the world. In addition, suggestions for improvement and implications for explosion prevention are discussed.

It is a great honour to address our Institute as President, but the choice of a suitable subject was not an easy one. In the past when the presidential address was given at an annual conference the subject usually related to the conference or industry concerned; more recently the subjects have been more philosophical and this is a distinct advantage to me.I appreciate that I am addressing an informed audience and I am sure' that you are well advised in many of the points that I hope to leave with you. Unlike the specialist who gets to know more and more about less and less and eventually knows everything about nothing, I am one of the group who gets to know less and less about more and more and eventually knows nothing about everything.I hope you will appreciate this point whilst you are listening to me.In recent years I have been closely associated with the problem that troubles most governments of our time: the competition of many groups of differing backgrounds for the land that is available to the nation.This is of particular interest to the industry with which we are concerned as it is of critical importance to the discovery and development of future reserves of minerals and metals. Part of my daily task is involved with the administration of legislation for mining operations and the conditions under which such operations may be undertaken, in implementing government policies relating to mining, and in designing and administering legislationdirected to safety and health in mines.Most of our members are involved in exploration or in day-to-day problems associated with the production of minerals or the management of companies in these pursuits and would be aware of many of the conflicting viewpoints on priorities.F. F. Espie in his presidential address of 1975 'On being a minority', made the point that our Institute found that the mining industry had a great communication 'Problem with the Australian people.I believe that this is one of our major problems.

The Bureau of Mines investigated extraction of aluminum from aluminum-silicon alloys as a means of utilizing domestic aluminum silicate ores for aluminum production. Aluminum was extracted from aluminum-silicon alloys by electrolysis in molten electrolytes of NaCl-KCI-AIC13 and NaCl-KCI-AIF3 in a laboratory-scale cell. Six alloys with aluminum contents ranging from 20 to 87 percent aluminum were tested, and aluminum products of primary grade or better were obtained. More than 80 percent of the aluminum was recovered with current efficiencies as high as 91 percent. Recovery of a metallurgical-grade silicon product from the anode residue by an acid leaching procedure was possible with the 50-50 and 65-35 Al-Si alloys.

ONE of the phases of mining wide ore-bodies, such as are found in Broken Hill, is the laying-out and design of the sill floor gangway timber, When, in the above operation, a detail has to be repeated frequently, it is desirable in the interests of efficiency that that detail should be standardized as far as possible. Before arriving at a standard design e.g., a crosscut layout-it would seem necessary to compare its strength with some other unit of timber and see that the general design is at least as strong as the unit that has been taken for comparative purposes, In these notes no attempt is made to calculate the stresses to which timber underground is subjected, but merely to draw a comparison between the relative strengths of the various cross sections of timber in common use underground.It has been assumed for the purposes of comparison that the milling exerts pressure in a vertical plane only, and is uniformly distributed over any area. A beam supported at both ends, and with a uniformly distributed load, has the maximum bending moment at a point midway between the points of support, and equals- WL2 8 where W = load per unit length. Why do we look for better reconciliation when times get tough? Why wait? Mine reconciliation should be a priority throughout the good times too. In fact, with good reconciliation, those good times are going to be even better and will help pave the way to success through those preventable bad times. Reconciliation throughout the entire mining value chain requires the capture, validation, and analysis of copious amounts of data. This task can be daunting for a team in a small mine, let alone reconciling across a suite of large mines. This paper will outline the different ways we can reconcile across the value chain, why we should reconcile over differing periods of time and how Snowden?s solution to proving reconciliation can be a simpler, reliable and transparent process. Snowden?s Reconcilor is proving to be a valuable tool on any mining scale, by capturing, validating, sorting and reporting data for timely decision making by the site geologist through to corporate management. The discussion submitted by Drs. Stillwell and Edwards is at once helpful and gratifying to the authors. Their contribution deals with two phases of the problem-(I) an additional suggestion for the relative solubility of galena and marmatite, and (2) submission of an alternative explanation for the greater leaching of the Northern ore-body. With the first we agree in principle, and herewith present recent data which will help to substantiate the idea, though the mechanism is not believed to be as simple as indicated by Stillwell and Edwards. Concerning the second suggestion, the original explanation put forward. in the paper is held to fit the facts more closely.In view of the influence, as shown by Garrells' paper,in which the presence of Cl' ion may have upon the relative solubilities of lead and zinc, it is perhaps worth noting that Broken Hill mine water carries a higher content of Cl' than has been reported from many of the other lead-zinc districts.Since our paper was published, an analysis of water issuing from the newly-opened Northern ore-body on the 2,600-ft. level has been made (12/1/43). An alinement (steering) sensor for continuous mining machines has been developed under a Bureau of Mines contract. A laser source in the entry projects a beam parallel to the centerline of the entry. The beam is optically shaped to a narrow, vertical fan and illuminates an array of optical sensors bunted on the mini machine. These sensors interpret the location of the beam into meter readings of heading (angle) error and lateral displacement errors. The system, which was tested for 5 months in an operating mine, appears to be fundamentally sound, and with some modification, should be applicable to remote or automatic guidance of continuous miners and other machines.

THERE is at the present time a revived interest in amalgamation, due to the number of mines starting up, usually on high-grade ore, and utilizing this relatively cheap and convenient means of recovering gold, more especially in their initial stages of production. The marked increased use of the amalgamation process has revealed a dearth of amalgamators and there is no doubt the art of amalgamation has stood still for a generation or two and is not readily applicable to the modern practice of milling gold ores. Mill operators of long experience are learning the art for the first time and are giving it intelligent study, and considerable testing and research work is now being undertaken Most millmen consider amalgamation a simple process, and so it is when we have a clean ore with coarse gold, specially when stamps are used for crushing. In treating Nova Scotia ores by stamps and amalgamation, recoveries of 95 to 97 per cent are common and easily obtained. So-called 'under-water feed' is almost universally used in Nova Scotia and is quite beneficial. The water is supplied through jets between the dies and below the die surface and maintains this space as a live trap which catches the gold particles before they are overground and spoilt for amalgamation. With this method, the portion of gold recovered in the battery is higher than usual and often amounts to 80 per cent of the total gold in the ore, the remaining 20 per cent being caught on the plate. As a continuous amalgamator, the simple plate cannot be excelled. Some of the modern devices having moving or covered and not very accessible plates, which cannot be readily inspected and dressed to keep them in condition, do not give the best results in service. An exception might be drawn in the case of amalgamation of very heavy ore or concentrate which would bank up unless the plate is carried at such a steep inclination as to weep mercury. Difficulties in stamp-mill amalgamation are encountered when acid water is used or when grease is present. Also, certain sulphides and graphitic and talcose ores give trouble, resulting in poor gold recovery and high mer-cury loss. The older literature on gold milling deals with the common troubles of this type and the old-time amalgamator was well able to take care of day-by-day difficulties. When the difficulties were unsurmountable, the ore was classed as 'refractory' and other processes were used.

There are about 400 multi-storey buildings founded on wooden piles in the city centre of Turku in Finland. Soil conditions are variable from hard rock to very soft clay. Due to the soil conditions and ground water lowering there are basically four different types of underpinning projects. Under dimensioned cohesion piles in a deep clay layer, decaying cohesion piles, a combination of these two reasons and decaying end bearing piles in a thin clay layer area. Many different execution methods have been used such as impact driving, jacking and drilling and combinations of these.

A typical quality program plan is presented for explosion-proof (XP) electrical enclosures. The plan is suggested for manufactures of XP enclosures which are to be certified by MSHA for mining use. The plan describes the quality system, organization and implementing mechanisms which are to be applied in the manufacture and delivery of certified XP enclosures. The variation of carbon monoxide and hydrogen utilization with the amount of the reductant in the blast furnace bosh gas was investigated for the No. 4 blast furnace at The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd.iron and steel works. Newcastle. The degree of CO utilization decreased with increasing CO in the bosh gas; the H., utilization increased with the H., content of the gas. Empirical relationships for CO and H., utilization are proposed.H2, is 3-6 times as effective a reductant as CO at present levels of CO (34-39 per cent) and H2 (6-10 per cent) in blast furnace bosh gas. H2, gas injection into the blast furnace is proposed as a means of lowering the coke consumption, and the economics of H2 injection are evaluated.

Cook Colliery currently mines in the Argo Seam, beneath old workings in an overlying seam. The Argo seam is up to 4.8 m thick and a continuous haulage system behind an ABM25 is used to develop first workings. Current partial secondary extraction utilises floor stripping and pocketing or sumping first working pillars on retreat. The following paper summarises this recent secondary extraction experience, particularly from a geotechnical perspective, but also considering production and ventilation issues. Outcomes and learnings are presented for mining in this challenging and close multi-seam environment. The sealed castor seam workings are within 20 m, and vary from unmined areas to large first working pillars, to partial extraction panels and full extraction panels. High stress remnant pillars and goaf-edges are notable mining considerations. The mining environment is further complicated by faulting, thrust zones and weak laminated roof.
