Contract J0275007 was to consist of a thorough two-phase statistical analysis of respirable coal mine dust data from USBM Contracts H0232061, H0232060, H0230029, H0230031, H0210050, and H0242013. Consequently, BCR cataloged and assembled relevant data items from these contracts and formulated procedures suitable for the evaluation. The selected procedure was a Multilinear Regression Analysis which related dust concentrations measured in the mine to other mine parameters. Under the first phase, a thorough analysis of the date from USBM Contract No. H0230029 was completed. Primary results from this analysis are as follows: (1) The five variables that significantly affect dust concentrations in the return behind the brattice are the spray system utilized; the distance from the face to the return brattice; the return airflow; the production rate; and the water consumption rate, in that order. These five variables describe about 85 percent of the total variation in the return dust concentration. (2) Results at the miner and jack-setter locations were somewhat less conclusive due to the fact that only 17 percent of the variation in dust at the miner could be resolved and only 48 percent of the variation at the jack-setter location could be explained. The decision of the sponsor was that these initial results revealed as much information as could be expected; thus, per instructions from the USBM, the second phase (analysis of the other five contracts) was abandoned.

Safe and good operation of Søderberg electrodes is dependent upon high quality electrode paste coupled with correct electrode operating procedures. Good electrode performance depends further on proper melting and densification of the electrode paste. The melted paste should form a dense and viscous layer that prevents gasses from the baking process to move upwards. Both paste cylinders/blocks and briquettes can be used, but the procedures may differ between the various types of paste products. For briquette columns the formation of the important viscous layer is obtained through melting and densification of the briquettes. By basic rheological studies of electrode paste and by laboratory tests of briquette beds at isothermal conditions we have achieved a better understanding of the melting process. The effects of temperature gradients, pressure and friction between the briquettes and the electrode casing have also been evaluated qualitatively in pilot scale experiment and in industrial scale tests. The paper shows that melting and densification starts at a considerable lower temperature than the pitch softening temperature. It is concluded that the formation of a briquette electrode column depends on parameters as temperature, briquette column pressure and the friction. Operating conditions influencing the above parameters should be defined and established for each specific furnace operation. Such factors are e.g., charging and slipping procedures, column heating and electrical conditions.

Dolomite [CaMg(CO3)2] is an intolerable impurity in phosphate ores, due to its MgO content. The need to develop a cost-effective method for the removal of dolomite from high-MgO phosphate ores becomes increasingly important as high-grade reserves become depleted. The jigging process has been investigated as a method for the beneficiation of phosphate ores. A laboratory-scale jig was constructed and tested using a semicontinuous, ?through-the-screen? jigging process. Two types of sedimentary phosphate ore were used; a sample from Plant 1 in the 4.00 x 0.85-mm size range, containing 1.55% MgO, and a sample from Plant 2 in the 3.40 x 0.85-mm size range, containing 3.07% MgO. These were tested, using previously optimized jigging parameters, at high and low feed rates. For the Plant 1 phosphate ore, a phosphate concentrate that contained 0.89% MgO was achieved with a bone phosphate of lime (BPL) recovery of 32.0%. For the Plant 2 phosphate ore, a phosphate concentrate that contained 1.38% MgO was achieved, with a BPL recovery of 74.7%. Minimum achievable MgO grades were also determined by analyzing hand-separated phosphate samples.

Clearly a plant designed only to treat average ore at the nameplate rate will fail to achieve nameplate in any typical year. To insert the necessary capability to achieve nameplate it is common process engineering design practice that plant must be able to treat an ore with 80th percentile value (hardness or competence values for example) at the nameplate rate. In the authorÆs experience, apart from a couple of notable cases, this has been applied reasonably well as a principal, and with widespread success. However, in a number of recent instances it became clear that the use of the 80th percentile number would have resulted in significant under design of the plant. This paper makes the case that the 80th percentile, as a principal, has can have serious flaws and its use needs to be assessed on a case by case basis. The discussion in this paper is the first step in developing a new design principal, and the associated methodology for selection of a design value, that will ensure plants are designed to achieve their nameplate capacities.CITATION:David, D, 2013. In an earlier publication* I showed the development of the instantaneous point source solution for a well producing at a constant rate at the center of a system of two radial, adjoining sands of different permeabilities. I also showed how a wellbore radius could be incorporated if this were the development required. For the purpose of that paper and the point I wished to make, this solution served. It yielded a simplifying solution of sands in series identified by Eqs. VI-26 and VI-27. (These equations are reproduced in part by Bixel and van Poollen as their Eq. 3, Page 302.) I am well aware that the simplified solutions are approximations. The facts that these Ei-functions satisfy the diffusivity equation and meet the boundary conditions both at the well and at the interface between sands, and that the earliest time considerations yield zero pressure drop, are evidence that the solutions are good approximations. This was the purpose for these formulas, which I interpret that where the permeabilities are of finite order of magnitudes in the respective media, the relations give satisfactory answers. However, from the authors' point of view there are reservations, which leads me to consider their entire generalization as illustrated in their Figs. 1 through 14. What I understand from their storage capacity, relationship Fs, which is the ratio of the product of porosity and compressibility of Sand II to Sand I, that is employed here by the authors as a correlative means of identifying one figure from another, there is nothing in the exact mathematics that supports such a term as a means of correlation. This is taken out of context, unsustained that this applies. Here the mathematics are known, where the true correlation is the diffusivity term of one sand to another. This entails permeability that refers back again to the term M in their paper for the transmis-sibility of fluid from one sand to the other that should have also been a part of this storage capacity. In Figs. 8 through 14, which purported to show the simplified equation following this correlation, there are apparent discontinuities for M equal to or less than 0.1000 that differ from the trends for greater values of M. In this connection there is no reference radius given for this cumulative pressure drop in the paper that would permit me to make these calculations. However, what is clear for M equal to 0.1000 or less we are treated to almost a closed barrier at the interface; a condition entered by the writers without qualification. This across-the-board treatment of these simplified formulas, whatever the motive of the authors, enters into a range of permeabilities that even I as the contributor would have reservations that such could apply. Under comparable conditions I would be looking at a closed reservoir or some facsimile for such. The extent to which the approximation or the exact equations pertain is not evident in the generality offered by Bixel and van Poollen in their paper. Only when they or other writers show the comparison of the pressure distributions within the formations can one be able to judge the rational limits to subscribe to the simplified formulas.

The techniques described employ a computerized analysis and a new method of data presentation called composite graphing. The underlying theory, its practical application to the data, and the experimental equipment and procedure are described.

Bio-Oxidation of Arsenic and Stibium Bearing Gold Ores Bio-oxidation of arsenic and stibium bearing gold ores with acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans was studied. The preoxidation results show that the best bio-oxidation technical parameters are the initial pH in the range of 1.8 ~ 2.0, particle sizes under 0.074 mm, temperature in the range of 25¦C ~ 30¦C and rotating speed of the orbital incubator in 100 rpm ~ 160 rpm. The leaching results show that If the ore, of which contain 10.37 per cent arsenic and 36.81 per cent stibium, is not bio-oxidised, gold leaching is only about 41 per cent, after 8 days oxidised, the result is about 76.55 per cent, which improved about 35.62 points. The relationship between gold leaching and arsenic oxidation is direct proportion, furthermore, it needs only partly oxidise and higher gold leaching could be get, for example, gold leaching is over 90 per cent when asenic oxidation is 60 per cent. The results will provide theoretical and technological supports of bio-oxidation arsenopyrite for pretreating refractory gold ores.

This report is an account of research conducted to improve the performance of and then further field test Draft Power Sensor (DPS) equipment, the use of which enables a bulldozer operator to optimize his machine's work rate. Significant improvements were made in DPS hardware, and extended field testing was conducted at two working strip mines: the Glenharold Mine of Consolidation Coal Company, near Stanton, North Dakota, and the Beulah Mine of Knife River Coal Company, near Beulah, North Dakota. This report documents the increase of bulldozer work production by greater than twenty percent while using the Draft Power Sensor when compared to baseline work production without benefit of the Draft Power Sensor. Research was done by Southwest Research Institute under contract with the Bureau of Mines.

"MillMapperTM is a new 3D laser scanning technology that has only recently been introduced into the North American mining industry. It enables mill operators to gain a much more complete understanding of the condition of their mill internals and to more accurately predict how liners will perform in the future. This paper describes the technology and techniques used to obtain data on internal mill conditions, how this data is processed into meaningful information which enables better prediction of liner life and gives examples of the reports provided by the software. Examples are given, using client sites data, on how this information is being used to reduce the costs and improve the revenue from SAG and ball mills.INTRODUCTION Scanalyse Pty Ltd developed the MillMapperTM technology in Australia over a number of years and has recently introduced it into North America with a significant take-up in Canada. The technology was commercially released in Australia in late 2006 and there has been significant technical development in the features provided since that time. MillMapperTM has been accepted as a useful technology in the Australasian region and more recently has been introduced to sites in Chile, Peru, Brazil, USA, Canada, Laos and South Africa. Over 100 different mills have been scanned and the technology has been thoroughly tested and validated. It has become an integral tool in condition monitoring and improvement programs for SAG and Ball mills across many sites and is now providing significant and measurable benefits to the mining industry. Some of these benefits will be described in this paper using actual examples."

Equipment and techniques were developed with Bureau of Mines facilities for measurement in the laboratory of sonic shear wave velocity in variously shaped rock specimens in a wide range of sizes. A variety of rock types was tested. The shear wave front is produced by electronically excited, piezo-electric ceramic) disk-shaped transducers. Transmitter and receiver are interchangeable. Special equipment components were Bureau produced; other components were commercially available. The equipment permits quick measurement of shear wave velocity on variously shaped specimens with a minimum of specimen preparation. The technique, under favorable conditions, allows for determination of the moment of arrival of the shear wave when it is superimposed on a weak longitudinal wave.

A.) : In congratulating Mr. Hooker upon his resume of Mr Parry's paper I have in mind the fact that he carried out the research into pipe pressures. Hydraulic filling as practised in Kalgoorlie has created world wide interest, with these pressures and percolation being vital points.Early in the 1950s, representatives of the Kolar field were conduGted over the local mines where stopes at depths below 2,000 ft were being filled. The problems of pipe pressures were their main consideration since depths of up to 10,000 ft were envisaged.Mr Krishnaiah and Mr Murthy from the same field are with us today and perhaps we may hear of their experiences with depths of 6,000 ft and long lateral lines.J. Details of research projects currently in progress and involving the hydraulic transportation of New South Wales coals are given together with information on the hydraulic transportation of coal in the United States of America. The potential of hydraulic transportation as a viable alternative to the proposed expansion and upgrading of the New South Wales railway system to meet the projected New South Wales coal production to the year 2000 is described.

Modern computers and software provide powerful tools for the geologist to construct reliable models of geological resources, and the mining engineer to produce accurate and workable mine plans. Over the years many people have developed a phobia of computers, especially for geological analysis, modelling and mine planning. This phobia is often caused by a lack of knowledge, poor training or a bad experience. The adoption however of computers for geological modelling and mine planning is now becoming mainstream. With the correct training, a good understanding of input data, and detailed knowledge of the required results, the phobia can safely be overcome to provide mining operations with increased productivity.

The deposit comprises two vertical, lenticular bodies emplaced in the allochthonous block of a Variscan thrust. Epigenetic mineralisation occurs as replacement of carbonated volcaniclastic rocks of Cambro-Ordovician age. The dominant sulphide minerals are sphalerite and galena with minor chalcopyrite; the main non-metallic mineral is quartz and there is hydrothermal silicification, chloritisation and sericitisation. Sulphur isotope values for sphalerite and galena are heavy and reflect the fundamental relationship between delta-34S in ZnS and in PbS, suggesting isotopic equilibrium. Four sphalerite-galena pairs yield temperatures between 163 and 218 degrees C, in good agreement with the 187-207 degrees C estimated by the Ga/Ge-sphalerite geothermometer. The ore sulphide was leached by the hydrothermal solution from diagenetic pyrite in the host rocks and disseminated sphalerite and galena in Cambrian carbonates

The objective of this study was two-fold: 1. To perform a world literature search pertinent to the analysis, selection and design of hoisting systems and their components and to codify the search into a literature compendium. The search resulted in a technical data file of over 1500 hard copy items. The compendium index was also suitable for establishing a comprehensive computer-loaded data base on the subject. 2. To develop a comprehensive system of guidelines to cover salient aspects of analysis, selection and design of electrical, mechanical and structural components of a hoisting system with a view to establish parameters for maximum safety and efficiency of operation, installation and revision of the system. 3. (a) In-shaft equipment design and specification criteria are considered as they influence guideline preparation. (b) A comprehensive review of hoist electric drives and controls as applied to mine hoists is set forth with special reference to duty cycle calculations and their effect on electrical component selection.

Este trabalho estuda o fenômeno da erosão e a validação de um erosímetro. Com este propósito, as taxas de erosão, perda de massa acumulada por unidade de área e o fator de esfericidade foram medidos. Os testes foram realizados com corpos de prova de latão 360 CLA, efetuando quatro testes com durações de 5, 10, 15 e 20 horas, respectivamente. As amostras foram pesadas em uma balança de precisão antes e após os testes. O abrasivo utilizado foi a areia ABNT em uma concentração de 10% em peso. O impacto repetitivo entre as partículas abrasivas causou trincas, lascamentos e, consequentemente, a formação de partículas menores. Também foi constatado o arredondamento das partículas abrasivas. Tais fatos são a causa do decréscimo da taxa de erosão com o aumento do tempo de teste. Micrografias apresentam a degradação da superfície na parte frontal do corpo de prova devido à remoção de material. O erosímetro obteve sucesso nas comparações com outros artigos.

Introduction The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act was passed in 1977 to put an end to the uneven environmental standards and enforcement established by various coal mining states in the US. One year after passage, the Secretary of Interior was directed to promulgate permanent program regulations implementing Title V provisions of the Act. These regulations were to form the basis for state regulatory programs under the Act and to allow states to assume primary regulatory responsibility. To implement the underground mining provision of the Act, the Secretary is directed in section 516(a) of the Act to promulgate rules. But they must take into consideration the differences between surface and underground coal mining. The regulations developed by the Secretary in 1979, with respect to subsidence control, included: • a subsidence control plan as part of the permitting process; • substantive provisions establishing performance standards for subsidence control; and • provisions providing for the prohibition of mining under perennial streams, impoundments larger than 24.6 dam3 (20 acre ft), and certain public facilities and urban areas. Industry challenged the Secretary's regulations implementing the subsidence control provisions. The litigation was consolidated with all other challenges to the permanent program regulations. (Permanent Surface Mining Regulation Litigation, Civil Action No. 79-1144; D. D.C., May 16, 1980.) In two opinions dealing with the multitude of issues raised by both industry and environmental groups, the US District Court of the District of Columbia ruled against industry. It upheld the promulgated subsidence control provisions. The US Court of Appeals stayed the appeals pending the agency's review and revision of its regulations. The regulatory reform was conducted in accordance with the order from the Secretary of Interior and the President in 1981. As a result, the subsidence control regulation was revised, reproposed, and finalized in June 1983 (Federal Register). This regulation, along with others, was again challenged by environmental groups and industry. On Oct. 1, 1984, the court, after finding the Secretary's reading of the Act reasonable, upheld the 1983 subsidence regulation except for one section. On Feb. 21, 1985, in accordance with the court's ruling, the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) suspended a portion of 30 CFR 817.121 (c)(2) concerning the damage correction requirement for structures or facilities and reproposed it on July 8, 1985 (Federal Register). In conjunction with a request for public comments, OSM now also seeks comments on the omission from the 1983 rule of the requirement in the 1979 rule regarding a presubsidence survey and monitoring of damage to structures. Technical issues related to subsidence regulations The subsidence regulations of June 1, 1983, consist mainly of two parts: a subsidence control plan as part of the permitting process; and substantive provisions establishing performance standards. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has undertaken the development of mineral industry cost escalation factors to enable the estimation of mineral development and extraction costs for mineralized sites in Alaska throught the use of the Bureau's Cost Estimating System v2.0 (CES 2.0). For the purposes of this document, all calculations are based on, and reflect the economic environment in Alaska in July 1992. The greater cost of mining in Alaska as compared to the contiguous-48 States can be estimated for Alaskan mining operations through (1 ) the analysis of capital and operating costs for analogous mine and mill plants in operation in the contiguous-48 States; (2) the hypothetical relocation of mine and mill plants from their actual location(s) to Alaska by making engineering modifications to the mine and mill plant design as required by the Alaskan site characteristics; (3) calculation of the cost of the required engineering modifications and; (4) the escalation of all costs to a level representative of the economic environment in Alaska at some specific point in time.

ZAY JEFFRIES (written discussion*).-I have read with much interest Mr. Ruder's discussion of Professor Howe's paper, "The Supposed Reversal of Inheritance of Ferrite Grain Size from that of Austenite." I am yet of the opinion that my first explanation' of Mr. Ruder's samples is substantially correct. In that explanation I did not intend, however, to convey the impression that "reversed inheritance" was the general rule nor even of common occurrence but rather that." Non-inheritance" was the general rule. Mr. Ruder suggests that a " perfectly formed" grain is an indication of inheritance. The grains in my Fig. 52 are perfectly formed and in fact more nearly equiaxed than those in Mr. Ruder's Fig: C,3 yet the grains in the former are known not to be inherited but to have been formed by the partitioning of larger austenite grains. On close examination of Mr. Ruder's Fig. C the very shapes of the grain suggest partitioning. Again, the grain size (25 to 30 grains per square millimeter) is at least 10 or- more likely 20 times smaller than might be expected of the austenite from which these grains were .formed under the given time and temperature conditions. Mr. Ruder's newer results on electrolytic and Armco iron are most interesting and instructive. His results fit in. nicely with my conclusions 5, 6 and 10.4 His photographs, however, indicate that the thickness of the pieces of sheet metal are such that abnormal grain growth is promoted. He indicates that equilibrium grain size after heating to 950° C., with furnace cooling, is about the same as his Fig. 1, above. I estimate this to be approximately one-half -grain per square millimeter, or 40 times as large as I have obtained with the same material (Armco iron) after heating Y4-in. bars to 1300° C. for 2 hr. and cooling in the furnace. The effect of thickness of sample on grain size is one which needs more attention.

Rapid, sensitive, and precise methods of determing major, minor and trace constituents of oilfield brines are needed. Several methods have been developed or adapted by the Federal Bureau of Mines at the Petroleum Research Center, Bartlesville, Okla. The following methods are described in this report: Spectrophotometric and volumetric for iodides and bromides; potentiometric for pH, alkalinity, acidity, borate boron, total boron, and organic boron; gravimetric for potassium; disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) volumetric for total hardness, calcium, and magnesium; spectrophotometric for fluorides; and color comparison .for arsenic. Adequate sensitivity, precision, and accuracy were obtained for each method. The Bureau of Mines pioneered in research on the analysis of oilfield waters (2, 46, 47).6 However, several of these early procedures were quite time consuming. Also, they did not include methods for determining trace and minor constituents of brines.
