"Construction and demolition waste (CDW) is no dangerous material resulting from construction, and demolition of houses, large building structures, roads, bridges, piers, and dams. It is possible to recycle these materials, to reduce environmental impacts, and to reuse them in construction sector. To evaluate in a correct way the possibility to reuse this material it is important to lead laboratory tests to assess the proprieties and quality characteristics. European, Italian and British ad hoc Committees had elaborated specific Standards, to evaluate Geometrical, Physical, and Chemical requirements of recycled materials. A research was carried on to define the guidelines for laboratory tests, their suggested values and quality standards. The Construction and Demolition Waste Construction and demolition waste (CDW) is no dangerous, uncontaminated material resulting from construction, renovation, repair, and demolition of houses, large building structures, roads, bridges, piers, and dams. CDW waste is made up of wood, steel, concrete, gypsum, masonry, railway ties, roofing materials, carpeting, insulation, plaster, metal, and asphalt, and all waste included in CER Code 17. In particular Demolition wastes are defined as materials resulting from the demolition, instead Construction wastes are defined as waste materials resulting during construction process or in pre-manufacturing construction industry. Environmental problems In a lot of cases Construction and Demolition Waste materials were discharged in landfills, these are filling up with CDW and others, and some of them will close in the near future. In addition, illegal dumping of CDW debris can result in future health risks, decreased property values, cleanup costs and enviromental problems. The typical environmental impacts generated by CDW dumps are: 1- Dust problem, which causes air pollution, as will as forming dirty areas. 2- Uncontrolled locations, that will encourage the disposal of other waste types with the usual construction wastes leading to an environmental disaster. 3- The degradation and deterioration of the coastal lands and the natural protectorates. 4- The loss of aesthetic features. 5- Occupation of large areas, causing extra hauling costs. Therefore, it is wise to find other alternatives, like reuse or recycling, other than landfilling CDW debris or illegal dumps, because a proper management and the reduction of CDW amount can save money, conserve resources, and preserve the environment."

"Dispersed and flocculated alumina (non-spherical particles) slurries were prepared by pH controlling with HCL Spray-drying of these resulted in dimpled granules with a smooth surface and high density, and spherical granules with rough surface and low-density, respectively. Detailed characterization on granules and their compacts includes: SEM observation, density measuring (mercury porosimetry and Archimedes's Principle) and liquid immersion optical microscopy. Compaction of these granules originated a larger particles rearrangement in the samples made with the spherical granules than with the dimpled granules. This was verified through the orientation of alumina particles, which was pronounced in the compact made with the former granules.IntroductionOn immersing a ceramic powder in water, the surface usually acquires a charge by interaction with ionic species in solution. The charge is affected by pH and the electrolyte concentration of the water. 1 The dispersion in a slurry is achieved through the interaction of charges on the particle surface with the media. In the ceramic processing, especially in the process of casting, the dispersion of slurry has been one of the most important topics studied for many years. Recently the attention is paid on its role in the pressing. The granule characteristics are governed by the dispersion state of slurry. Takahashi et al2 , Tsubaki et al3 and Walker et al4 showed that the granules from dispersed slurry were dimpled and of high density, while granules from flocculated slurry were spherical and of low density. This variation in the granules characteristics should have a marked effect on the structure of compact.This paper presents the influence of the dispersion state of alumina slurry on the granules characteristics and also on the internal structure of compacts. Different dispersion states were elaborated by adjusting pH of the slurry. In this method, the particles are dispersed or flocculated only by the effect of surface charging, and thus some secondary effect such as the steric hindrance from an electrolyte dispersant is avoided. The characteristics of granules and compacts are examined with SEM, density measurements by mercury porosimetry and by Archimedes's Principle and liquid immersion optical microscopy. This novel microscopy provides various important information on packing structure of particles, such as their orientation. 5"

"One of the critical variables to be controlled during arc welding is the size or geometry of the weld pool. The measurement of pool geometry has become an increasingly important problem with the advance of welding automation and control, and this paper addresses that problem. The basic concept of pool size estimation via measurement of pool dynamics is presented. The theory underlying this concept is discussed and is followed by a review of the current work in this area. It is concluded that pool dynamics can be characterized by natural frequencies of oscillation, for stationary welds, and that these can be measured by appropriate signal processing performed on the arc voltage. However, it appears that only full penetration welds show a strong correlation between weld size and natural frequency. Also, the extension of these results to the realistic case of moving welds has yet to be considered in detail. Nonetheless, this method of in-process measurement for real-time weld process control is still quite attractive where applicable since it can be accomplished simply by modifying the arc current schedule and by signal processing of the arc voltage.INTRODUCTUIONThe study of welding process control has been dominated by research into methods of in processing sensing of the weld pool geometry. While it has been shown feasible to measure the topside pool geometry using video methods [1,2], the penetration or backside bead width have remained elusive quantities. This is particularly true if a topside sensor location is required.The concept of using weld pool motion as a pool geometry sensing method was proposed by Hardt et al. [3] and later demonstrated by Hardt and Zacksenhouse [5] and Richardson and Renwick [6]. The concept is based on the fluid dynamics of a pool constrained by a solid container and by significant surface tension forces (i.e. a small shallow pool, not a ""pond"" or ""lake""). Such a pool, if subjected to external forces, will exhibit a surface motion is a function of that force, the properties of the fluid, the surface tension, and the shape of the container. Thus, if this motion can be excited and measured, and the relationship to the pool geometry determined, a means of sensing pool shape will exist."

"20Cr2Ni4A steel is a kind of high quality steel mainly used for manufacturing high-duty gears in the world. The high-duty gear with good performance must have wear and fatigue resistance properties. In order to get the good properties, the high-duty gear needs a high hardness gear surface and a good hardness gradient along the depth direction. In this paper, the samples were designed and a vacuum carbonitriding process was put forward to improve the surface hardness of parts for 20Cr2Ni4A. The process contained carbonitriding, quenching, cryogenics, and tempering process. The surface hardness and hardness gradient of carbonitrided samples were measured and the good microstructure was gained. The surface hardness is 67.SHRC and the case depth is 1.2mm.IntroductionSteels are widely used in industry, but the fatigue strength and the wear resistance of steel is much low. So the heat treatment process is put forward to improve the mechanical properties of steel. It can be improved by high-energy heat treatment methods for medium-carbon and highcarbon steel. Those methods will not alter the chemistry of the base metal [ 1].For low-carbon steels, carburizing and quenching should be used to improve the steels' mechanical properties, especially the surface properties. Compared with the carburizing, carbonitriding has more advantages, such as a short production cycle, low temperature and small deformation of parts. Carbonitriding is a modified form of gas carburizing, rather than a form of nitriding. The modification consists of introducing ammonia into the gas carburizing atmosphere to add nitrogen to the carburized case as it is being produced. Nascent nitrogen forms at the work surface by the dissociation of ammonia in the furnace atmosphere; the nitrogen diffuses into the steel simultaneously with carbon. Typically, carbonitriding is carried out at a lower temperature and for a shorter time than is gas carburizing, producing a shallower case than is usual in production carburizing [2]. As a material surface strengthening technology, carbonitriding has been widely used in the production [3]. And vacuum carbonitriding process is better than carbonitriding, because the vacuum carbonitriding temperature can be higher than carbonitriding without surface oxidation."

"Spent lead battery recycling still shows few weak points in the achievement of a 100% recycling of different waste matters and by- products arising from the recycling process. Some of said problems are dealing with aqueous streams outgoing the recycling plant, and more particularly, a) the waste waters discarded from the breaking and separation unit, b) purification of the spent electrolyte drained from waste batteries and upgrade to a quality compatible with full re-use by the batteries’ manufacturers, c) purification of the mother liquors discarded in the sodium sulfate crystallization process so to produce a salt of commercial grade. All of the above listed problems have been satisfactorily overcome applying an electrochemical process that, through different process conditions and parameters, is able to remove the harmful impurities that hinder the successful commercialization of such by products, or, at least, that can avoid heavy and expensive treatment plant and operation.IntroductionAlmost 100% of commercial lead and lead alloys produced by secondary lead plants is recycled to the new lead accumulators manufacture. The other by-products and residues produced through the lead recycling process may be classified into two groups:a) matters reusable in the new accumulators production processb) matters produced as a result of various reagents and additives used in the recycling process, to be sold to different market sectorsQuality and saleability of by-products are significant points for the economics of the secondary lead plant operation, because, if said by-products are not saleable, they are just wastes, so offsetting potential revenues, and, at the same time, adding a heavy burden to operating cost, like disposal cost [1]. When looking at a typical, modern lead scrap batteries recovery cycle, it is quite evident that we are still rather far from dealing with a waste-less technology (fig.1).The group a) includes 3 by-products produced through the breaking process: among those matters the polypropylene only usually reaches a standard quality suitable for sale to lead manufacturing sector or to other sectors as well. The other two by-products, electrolyte and separators, do not still reach, through a viable and effective regeneration process, a quality standard sufficient for their re-use in the lead batteries sector ."

"1. Introduction The North-Bohemian Basin area is known for its largest Czech brown coal deposit. About 50% brown coal reserves have been exploited in the North-Bohemian Basin by the mining company of Severoceske doly, a.s. (North Bohemian Mines, j.s.c.) today. The opencast mining of brown coal naturally led to vast landscape damages. Therefore reclamation work has acquired great significance. The specific feature of Severoceske doly, a.s. mining is the fact that the mining has been realized in two geologically absolutely different localities. This fact demands even rather different methods of reclamations. The main problem at Doly Bilina localities is the occurrence of overburden rocks from the series of rocks of coal seams. These rocks are texturally light but large amounts of coal (cca 5 %) and sulphur (cca below 3 %) which makes the soil reaction extremely acid. If they appear on the surface of the dump, they create a phytotoxic area, reclamation of which requires special methods. Rocks from Doly Nastup Tusimice localities are more suitable to reclamation use, but texturally extremely heavy rocks with large fraction of physical clays appear there that can generate a sterile soil area. Their reclamation requirements are completely different from those on Doly Bilina phytotoxic areas. That is the reason of the application of some non – traditional restoration methods. This report briefly summarises the experience in application of fertilizable soils, power plant stabilizer, power plant ash and aerial sowing of charlock. The results are documented by the monitoring of the physical, mineralogical and pedological parameters of rocks in testing areas.2. Properties of Overburden Rocks in Opencast Mines Bilina and Libous The reclamation work methodology in the North Bohemian Basin is above all determined by the properties of overburden rocks which occur in the top horizon of the reclaimed sites. The research of the rocks reclamation properties dealt with four current mining localities in the central part of the basin. It concerned the Bilina and Libous mines. This chapter states the stratigraphic status properties of these sites with respect to reclamation availability. The total status of the area of interest is shown in the figure No. 1."

"An afterburner for green petroleum coke calcination in electrothermal fluidized bed was designed, fabricated, installed, and tested on a pilot fluidized bed calcination furnace. The experimental set-up comprised a combustion chamber, in which fine particles and volatiles of the furnace off-gas were fully combusted, and a cooler equipped to calculate the related heat recovery and losses. Off-gas composition was analyzed to evaluate the combustion process. The energy balance confirmed the potential to recover a large part of the heat value of volatiles and fme particles from the GPC. Potential future applications of the results are discussed.IntroductionGreen petroleum coke (GPC) is an oil refining byproduct that can be used directly as solid fuel or as feedstock for the production of calcined petroleum coke [1-2]. GPC contains a high amount of volatiles and sulfur. With coke calcination, the GPC is heated to remove the volatiles and sulfur in the calciner off-gas to produce purified calcined coke, which is used in the production of graphite, electrodes, metal carburizers, and other carbon products. Currently, more than 80% of calcined coke is produced in rotary kilns or rotary hearth furnaces. These technologies provide partial heat utilization of the calcined coke to increase efficiency of the calcination process, but they also share some operating disadvantages [3]. On the other hand, coke calcination in an electrothermal fluidized bed opens up a number of potential benefits for the production enhancement while reducing the capital and operating costs.The increased usage of heavy crude oil in recent years has resulted higher sulfur content in green coke produced from oil refinery process, which requires a significant increase in the calcinations temperature and residence time [ 4]. The calorific value of the process off-gas is quite substantial and can be effectively utilized for combined heat and power (CHP) production to complement the energy demand. Waste heat recovered from the product cooling could also contribute to the overall economics of the calcination process. Preliminary estimates indicated the decrease in energy consumption by 35-50% as well as a proportional decrease in greenhouse gas emissions. So, efficiency improvement of the coke calcinations systems is attracting close attention of the researchers and engineers throughout the world."

"In recent years, zinc recovery from flue dusts and other industrial wastes has been increased, offering to the market a large tonnage of secondary zinc oxides, which can not be processed directly to render high quality zinc because of the hazardous impurities and halogens content.The ZINCEXTM Technology has been commercially applied for more than thirty years and represents the most suitable solution to deal with secondary or crude zinc oxides due to its flexibility, simplicity, and cost-efficiency, allowing production of SHG electrolytic zinc and pure zinc sulfate salts thanks to the flexibility and selectivity of the zinc solvent extraction unit regarding to get rid of impurities.A dual plant able to produce electrolytic zinc and crystallized zinc sulfate has been engineered to provide a flexible and profitable solution to zinc market. A description of the study and the relevant achievements is presented in this paper.IntroductionZinc is a valuable commodity in the marketplace and can be recycled again and again and still maintain its physical and chemical properties. Zinc recycling offers both environmental and economic benefits such as reducing volumes of material that end up in landfills, saving energy by reducing the need for mining and smelting, and relieving environmental impact on the land and water, and conserving zinc ore [1].The supply of zinc able to be re-processed will be increasing from year to year according to secondary materials enter the recycling stream, and as a result, more recycled zinc will become available in the market. Thus, some existing zinc refineries are implementing an annexed treatment line to process secondary oxides in conjunction with primary zinc concentrates [2].The galvanized steel scrap is normally recycled in electric arc furnaces or in basic oxygen furnaces, which generates a large tonnage of zinc-bearing flue dusts (EAFD). Around one million ton EAFD is yearly produced at the USA and the EU, respectively. The flue dusts are treated commercially by pyrometallurgical ways such as waelz kilns, electrothermic furnaces, etc, to yield secondary zinc oxides that can not be processed directly to render high quality zinc because of the hazardous impurities and halogens content [3]."

"This work shows the characterization of clay and the granite waste by-product from the sawing process of the granitic blocks, used as raw material for brick ceramic. Besides, shows the degradation of the ceramic material obtained with different by-product contents in the waste after lab test degradation, is investigated. The clay is obtained from mine use areas of ceramic industry in Campos-RI and the waste is originating from of the area of Cachoeiro-ES, an important center of decorative stone in Brazil. The mixes were made by the addition of 0% up to 10% of the waste in the raw material. After drying and firing up to 900°C, obtained prismatic pieces were considered intact. Physico-mechanical properties were obtained from wet and drying tests in laboratory considering 50 and 150 cycles. The results showed that the use of powder byproduct has a considerably influence on the weathering and strength of the material.IntroductionThe ornamental rocks and coating defines the most promising areas of business in the mineral sector [l]. In this context, the Espirito Santo appears as the main Brazilian state in production and export of ornamental rocks, representing 47% of national production [2] which in tum is one of the economic sectors most representative of this State, due of its transport logistics and port vocation that facilitates the export of such products.It is estimated that the state of Espirito Santo there are approximately 1,200 companies dedicated to the activities of ornamental rock by providing 20,000 direct jobs [ 1]. These mobilize support activities, such as companies that provide machinery, equipment and supplies for industries, including service providers for maintenance.However, the production of rocks produces about 15,000 tons of granite waste/month [3] only in the municipality of Cachoeiro ltapemirim-ES. This is justified by the presence of more than 500 extraction industries, cutting and processing of stone, with about 900 looms, waste generators.According to [4], there is great potential for the use of granite waste in red ceramics introduced for the manufacture of bricks, blocks structural ceramics. and other ceramic products, especially when evaluated on exposure to weathering."

"Desulfurization methods suitable for anode-grade petroleum coke (coke for short) used in primary aluminum industry are coke desulfurization during calcination, desulfurization in soakage and desulfurization in mediums. Coke desulfurization during calcination is discussed in this paper. Influences of calcination temperature, holding time and coke granularity on coke desulfurization were discussed. Experimental results show that calcination temperature has a remarkable influence on coke desulfurization. When the temperature is high enough desulfurization ratio of coke can reach 85% only by calcination. Holding time has a definite influence on coke desulfurization, but desulfurization ratio is low at the temperature of 900~1300°C. The influence of holding time is obvious when calcination temperature surpasses 1400°C. The influence of coke granularity is smaller compared with calcination temperature and holding time.IntroductionPetroleum coke is main raw material for carbon anode in primary aluminum industry, and its weight percentage in carbon anode is about seven percent. Green coke can not be directly used for anode production because of its immanent moisture and volatiles. Green coke must be calcined in order to meet the request of anode production. Calcination is a heat-treatment process during which green coke is heated to a given temperature to remove volatiles, moisture and some sulfur. Real density, strength, electrical conductivity and anti-oxidation ability of petroleum coke can be improved by calcination and calcined coke can be received [1, 3, 4]. Sulfur in calcined coke finally goes into carbon anode. During baking or aluminum smelting, the sulfur in anode ultimately changes into SO2 and emits from anode into the atmosphere. Excess SO2 easily leads to acid rain which brings heavy pollution to the environment [1, 2]. With the development of Chinese aluminum industry, consumption of anode-grade petroleum coke increases year by year, the total consumption in 2007 surpassed 4.5 million tones and the yearly emission of SO2 from aluminum smelters has exceeded 270 kilotones. From 2005 Chinese government began to limit the emission of SO2 from primary aluminum industry, so desulfurization of anode-grade petroleum coke becomes more and more urgent. Some relationship need to be found and used to guide desulfurization of petroleum coke."

"The high density sludge process (HDS) is a commercially proven acid rock drainage wastewater treatment process that is based on acid neutralization and metal precipitation. Previous studies have established that metal removal efficiencies in precipitation-based wastewater treatment applications can be improved through metal ion adsorption on ferrihydrite and/or aluminummodified ferrihydrite. This study was conducted specifically to determine whether the metals removal efficiencies at an existing industrial facility could be improved by promoting ferrihydrite and/or aluminum-modified ferrihydrite precipitation during the pH adjustment stages of the HDS process. The metal tenors of the treated wastewater samples are compared with those obtained through baseline experiments, which were designed to simulate the conventional HDS operation. The subject metals were: aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, copper, iron, manganese, nickel, and zinc.IntroductionThe HDS process is commercially proven ARD wastewater treatment technology that involves raising the wastewater pH by adding hydrated lime, caustic soda, or another alkaline substance. In addition to neutralizing the acidity, many dissolved metals precipitate as pH is elevated. Waste volume is minimized by capturing and immobilizing the precipitated solids.However, ARD streams characteristically contain multiple dissolved metal species. The response of various metals to pH adjustment in the HDS process is neither uniform nor quantitative, so minor to trace concentrations typically remain in the treated wastewater following solid-liquid separation. The effectiveness and applicability of the process would be improved if a means were found to further reduce the metal concentrations.Previous research and industrial applications have proven that metal ion adsorption on ferrihydrite (FH) and/or aluminum-modified ferrihydrite (AMF) increase metal removal efficiencies. Ferrihydrite and AMF are considered ideal for cation and anion adsorption from an aqueous solution at the appropriate pH [1]. Ferrihydrate adsorption of dissolved heavy metals is widely practiced throughout the world [2, 3]. It is established that FH and AMF effectively adsorb As contained in aqueous solutions [4]. Arsenic removal by adsorption on FH is the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Best Demonstrated Available Technology [5]. Twidwell and Leonhard also demonstrated that heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn) are effectively removed from solution by coprecipitation/adsorption using AMF and FH [6]."

"Waste heat from industrial operations in metals industry represents 20% to 50% of the total energy used in most manufacturing plants. Reduction and recovery of waste heat offers the most attractive and cost effective method of reducing energy intensity for an industrial plant to meet corporate energy saving goals. It is possible to reduce or recover 30% to 60% of the available waste heat by using conventional and readily available technologies. Projects to reduce or recovery waste heat may offer less than 3 years payback to as short as a few months. This paper presents information on most commonly used methods for waste heat reduction and recovery in the metals industry operations. It describes the methods and use of analysis tools that would allow a user to estimate energy savings, CO2 or GHG reduction potential, and economic benefit and includes appropriate case histories.Waste Heat SourcesSources of waste heat abound with the metals industry. While the overall quantity of energy is high, the sources are distributed throughout a plant. The largest source within the metals industry is within furnace exhaust / flue gases. This includes the high temperature gases from burners in process heating such melting, calcining, and sintering operations. It also includes lower temperature gases from heat treat, dryers, and heaters. Lower temperatures are also found after post processed hot gases. This could include heat left after heat exchangers, regenerative systems, thermal oxidizers, and emission control systems. Other hot gases include air used in direct and indirect cooling.While waste heat in form of exhaust gases is readily recognized, waste heat can also be found within liquids and solids. Waste heat within liquids includes things such as cooling water, heated wash water, and blow down water. Solids can be hot product at discharge after processing or reactions are complete. Indeed, not only is energy wasted in the hot metal that slowly air-cools, but additional energy may be used in providing air or water-cooling to increase the speed of cooling. Other waste heat sources are not as apparent and include things like hot surfaces, steam leaks, boiler blow down water, etc. Table 1 and Figure 1 show several major sources along with the temperature range and characteristics of the source."

We argue that a set of majorchallenges to world systems of commerce and politics will coalesce in the next several years. We develop four scenarios which differ according to how these challenges are handled, and which scenario actors play the key roles in managing the transition.

"The influence of an unconventional lance with a central nozzle on the multiphase fluid flow in a steelmaking converter is studied in this work by means of computer simulations. The lance has four peripheral supersonic nozzles and a vertical central nozzle. Besides, the oxygen flow in the central nozzle is considered independent from the main oxygen supply. Transient two-dimensional numerical simulations were carried out considering just molten steel and gaseous oxygen as the existing phases. Numerical results show that bath agitation and droplet generation are enhanced as a result of the central nozzle. However, the performance of this lance strongly depends on the distance of the lance tip to the molten steel surface and the velocity of the oxygen jet.IntroductionCurrently, two thirds of the world crude steel is produced through the steelmaking oxygen converter [1]. Given the unquestionable economic importance of this technology, any improvement or optimization proposal is welcome. In the majority of current oxygen converters a top oxygen supersonic jet is blown onto the molten steel through a water-cooled lance to eliminate by oxidation some impurities such as carbon and phosphorus. Conventional lances have inclined peripheral nozzles whose number depends on the converter capacity. During the process, a large amount of gases evolves, forming metal droplets and a metal-slag-gas emulsion [2]. The droplets and the resultant emulsion increase the reaction interfacial area, promoting in this way carbon removal and dephosphorization of the molten steel bath [3]. However, during the blowing stage, the emulsion rises towards the lance and converter mouth and frequently forms layers which accumulate in the lance, reducing the life of the lance tip [4, 5]. It is possible that some freezing of the molten metal occurs due to the low oxygen injection temperature, however there are no reports on this. Besides, frequently undesirable operating phenomena such as spitting and slopping may arise as a result of inappropriate blowing practices or bad lance design. In the oxygen steelmaking industry, novel lances design are needed in order to enhance the decaburization rate and the slag formation and, at the same time, preventing operating practices that decrease productivity and move away the shop from safety standards."

The opening years of the new millennium will be characterised by the closure of many lead and zinc mines because of reserve depletion. However, weak commodity prices through the second half of the 1990s have slowed project evaluation and have made it difficult to raise finances for the development of new mines required to replace lost output and to meet increasing demand for metal in the future. Growth of lead and zinc demand will be determined by the pace of global economic activity, especially in the emerging economies. How rapidly demand grows will have a key bearing on the possible shortfall in mine output and the response of prices to the implied tightening of metal supplies early in the new millennium. These issues are the focus of a discussion of the critical lead and zinc supply developments which will unfold post 2000, taking into account project lead times and the role that recycled metal plays in meeting market demand.

Flash smelting is used to smelt a large proportion of the world's copper and nickel and some lead/zinc concentrates. Understanding the factors controlling the ignition of these concentrates is an important consideration in designing burners and maximising the throughput of the flash smelting process. The literature on the subject is briefly reviewed and techniques for the measurement of ignition temperature discussed. The mineralogy of the concentrates and the role of thermodynamics and phase diagrams in interpreting and predicting ignition behaviour are emphasised and applied to interpreting results obtained on a nickel concentrate.

San Manuel Oxide operations of BHP Copper, located in Southeastern Arizona, operates a leach-solvent extraction/electrowinning (SXEW) facility that produces high quality cathode copper from low-grade oxide ores. Permanent heap leaching and in-situ leaching methods accomplish the dissolution of copper from the oxide ores. Open pit mining and heap leach construction took place from 1985 to 1995. Run-of-mine oxide ore from the pit was hauled to the heap dumps and leached by the soaking cure and continuous irrigation method. Solution application to the heaps still continues and acid soluble copper recovery has reached 86%. This paper presents and discusses the current operating practices and innovations applied to the leach facilities to maximize copper recovery from the heap leached residue. Factors such as irrigation methods, solution chemistry, sideslope treatment, post curing, lixiviant acid strength, and "rice paddies" irrigation, will be discussed. Heap leach solution control and sampling methodologies will be also presented.

"The effect of different additives on the bio-oxidation of arsenic-bearing gold ores has been carried out to solve the problems such as long period of leaching, low oxidation rate. The oxidants strengthen the cathodic reaction and thus improve the leaching rate by the increase of electron transfer. Meanwhile, silver catalysis is also effective for the decomposition of arsenicbearing gold ores due to the strengthening of anode reaction. Co-intensification by oxidants and Ag (I) is more efficient to the bio-leaching and the conversion of As (III) because the anode and cathodic reaction of biological oxidation of sulphide ores were both strengthened. The leaching rate reached to 63.94% after bio-leaching 13days by co-intensification of Ag (I) and Fe(III).IntroductionWith the worsening global ecological problems and the gradual exhaustion of available gold resources, metallurgical technology of refractory gold ore has received more and more attention and become possible due to its good advantage of the economic effects and negative effects to the environment. Refractory gold ore, the direct cyanide leaching rate of that is defined as less than 70%, has become an important raw material in gold extraction industry, in which sulfide bearing gold ore represents a large proportion, pyrite and arsenopyrite (FeAsS) is a common gold-bearing mineral. Since the gold is often encapsulated in the crystal lattice of these minerals, destruction or alteration of the ore to liberate the submicron and/or structurally bond gold is necessary[l]. Even if the ultrafine grinding approach also is generally not sufficient for these refractory ores and additional techniques like roasting, pressure oxidation and bacterial oxidation are used to liberate the gold [2]. In the three pretreatment processes, bacterial oxidation is characterized by its new ideas, low cost, no pollution, simple equipment and operation, high leaching index and become the most promising process which has received much attention over time [3-5]. But its further application is limited by some of its own shortcomings, such as long pretreatment time and the toxic effects of arsenic to bacteria on bio-leaching limit."

"The result of extensive research into fundamental mixed metal oxide catalyst morphology has produced a next generation all titanium Dimensionally Stable Anode (DSA ®). This new DSA ® anode, patent pending, is tailored for electrowinning of non-ferrous metals (copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc) by means of this new coating technology.These DSA ® anodes are characterized by a hanger bar with vertical distributor bars, having primary titanium mesh attached by weldments. The active mesh is provided with noble-metal electrocatalytic coatings, consisting of iridium and/or ruthenium oxides, obtained by thermal decomposition of precursor solutions applied to the titanium substrates. The catalytic activity of state-of-the-art DSA ® anodes is increased by controlling the crystallite size of the noble-metals without decreasing the decomposition temperature. It is known that below a certain value (typically 400°C) the stability of these oxides, and associated lifetime, is seriously compromised. A highly active DSA ® anode, consisting of a quasi-amorphous phase, is obtained at high temperature (above 450°C), therefore not compromising lifetime performance. Through optimization of these design parameters, the manufacture of these novel anodes was identified.DSA ® anode performance advantages include: lead-free ' green' all titanium anodes, true leadfree cathode quality, energy savings of 0.3 to 0.55 V can be realized depending on the EW application when compared to industry standard lead-alloy anodes, eliminate need for cobalt sulphate addition required for lead anodes, sustainability designed into long-life recoatable anode structures, increase plant cathode output through increased current density operations, improve plant on-stream production, no sludge generated or removed, and improve current distribution producing smooth high efficiency cathode.Introduction of ProductThere are many factors to consider when engineering a high performance DSA ® electrowinning anode. Half of the anode's performance is derived from the physical attributes of the electrocatalyst and methods employed when applying this catalyst to the titanium anode structure. The other half of the performance benefits relate to the proper structural design of the anode.
