At present, the Codelco Norte smelter processes in the Teniente Converter and the Flash smelting Furnace 1,420,000 t/y of its Chuquicamata concentrate with an arsenic content of up to 1.5%. In a near future Codelco-Chile is considering different processing options for a new projected concentrates from the Alejandro Hales mine (former Mansa Mina mine with an arsenic content of up to 6%). The main option is the possibility to process 3,000 t/d of mixing concentrates from the Alejandro Hales and the Chuquicamata mines, in the Teniente Converter. The main feature of this smelting unit will be high volatilization of arsenic when processing high arsenic-bearing concentrates. The CN smelter staff carried out a technical feasibility study to evaluate the processing of high arsenic-bearing concentrates directly in the Teniente Converter, thus the low arsenic-bearing concentrates can be processed in the FSF. Accordingly, laboratory scale tests were carried out at the Tohoku University facilities. The lab-scale results allowed an industrial scale test at the Codelco Norte smelter to smelt 2,300 tpd of high arsenic-bearing concentrates in the TC and evaluate the metallurgical impact in the smelting, converting and refining areas of the smelter. The main industrial-scale result confirmed the stabilization of the arsenic content at 0.5% in the 70% Cu produced white metal at the test condition.

Copper and gangue mineralogy constitute the most critical parameters for the hydrometallurgical processing and cost-efficient extraction of copper. Minor changes in copper-, rock-, or alteration mineralogy can severely impact the comminution efficiency, curing, agglomeration, acid consumption, copper extraction and PLS impurity loading. Further, copper leach operations, particularly in the southwestern United States, are increasingly challenged by a combination of low grades and semi-refractory copper. This paper discusses the metallurgical and economical benefits of continuous mineralogical analyses in order to establish and operate a mineralogical data base in copper leach operations. Troubleshooting for copper extraction, integration of process mineralogy into production forecasting, and process optimization will be illustrated with operational experiences from Chile and the United States.

Plant layout, process development and elements of machine component design are outlined, and key steps in integration into a stee-1 production system are detailed. Recent productivity advances and improvements in quality are described. Process developments are reviewed, and some future avenues for this technology are considered.

Press-fit systems are widely used to seal oil lines in the automotive engine components. In the case studied a ball plug made from the 7075 A1 alloy was inserted into a 319 Al alloy cast component. The oil lines were subjected to the required component service pressure. This paper addresses the analysis of the ball plug/casting hole press-fit performance. The tools used to investigate the plug system included: the SEMIEDS technique for the assessment of the plug and the casting hole wall surface integrity; image analysis methods for the characterization of the ball plug/casting hole interface; matrix microhardness measurements of the plug and casting components; laboratory ball plug insertion, speed and force correlation; as well as the ball shearing mechanism analysis. Laboratory tests indicated that optimization of the aluminum matrix hardness in the 319 A1 alloy cast components resulted in considerable improvement of the press-fit system sealing properties.

Bath smelting options for recovering valuable metals from jarositic residues containing 22-28% lead and 16-30% sulphur obtained from pressure leaching zinc-lead-copper bulk concentrates were investigated using thermochemical computations and crucible-scale experiments. Direct fuming of lead and zinc from a slaglmatte bath at 1250-300°C was demonstrated successfully. Up to 93% of the lead was recovered in the fume and steady-state recoveries of zinc were predicted in the range 82-95% under these conditions. The energy required for the fuming reactions was supplied by partial combustion of the fuel, added as char, with air. An important feature of the process is that the recoveries to the fume are not significantly affected by changing: the fuel:air ratio over a wide range. Thermodynamic computations, confirmed by experimental results also showed that the presence of a matte phase is not essential for high recovery of lead and zinc to the fume. Operating conditions which produced a matte ensured that about 70% of the silver and 80-90% of the copper were recovered into that phase. Approximately 98% of the arsenic in the residue was fumed. In the absence of matte the slags contained high arsenic levels (260-330 ppm) but low arsenic (20-60 ppm) levels were achieved when matte was produced.

In early 1982 Atlantic Cement Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Newmont Mining Corp. will come on line with a new water granulating grinding facility at Sparrows Point, Maryland to produce 800, 000 tons a year of separately ground granulated blast-furnace slag. The process and product will be unique to the United States. This paper will review some initial investigations undertaken to evaluate the cementitious properties of granulated slag. The effect of slag fineness on strength development is discussed and data is presented showing a relationship between glass content and hydraulicity and grindability of slag.

"A novel technique is developed and applied to evaluate the binder segregated at the· surface of granule. Compressive strength of each granule was measured directly with a micro-compressive instrument. The relation between compressive characteristics and the amount of binder was discussed quantitatively.IntroductionCharacterization of granules is essential in the production of ceramics, since they govern the structure of green compact and thus the structures and properties of ceramics. However, there is no research to clarify the relation between the strength of granules and structure of granules, especially of binder segregation at granule surface. We develop a novel technique to determine the binder concentration in the granules by the iodine method. In this study, we measure yield strength of granules directly and discuss the relevance between compressive characteristics and the concentration of binder.ExperimentalGranules were prepared by spray-drying of aqueous slurry of commercial alumina (AL160-SG1. Showa Denko, Tokyo, Japan) and PVA (PVA 105 Kurare, Japan). PVA. concentration in granules was 1.1, 1.5 and 2.3 wt%. The inlet and outer air temperatures were 200 and 95 °C , respectively. Iodine-potassium iodide solution was prepared by dissolving iodine (0.15mol) and potassium iodide (0.15mol) in diluted water (50ml). A saturated boric acid solution was prepared by mixing boric acid powder with a diluted water."

Chromium-containing slag was detoxified by the method of microbial treatment using Ch-1bacteria isolated from nature by our research group, belonging to achromobacter sp. and with the characteristic of reducing high concentration of Cr(VI) in alkaline solution. The detoxifying process of Ch-1 to chromium-containing slag was studied by column-leaching techniques respectively. The results indicate that Cr(VI) in leachate can not be detected when chromium-containing slag has been column-leached for 7 days, and Cr(OH)3 content in precipitate is up to 32.8% with great value of resource recycling. Flowchart of engineering experimentation was ascertained based on the parameters of column-leaching experiments. Using the technique of pelletization of chromium-containing slag heap-leaching by Ch-1,the leaching rate of water-soluble Cr(VI) existing in chromium-containing slag reaches up to 100%, while the leaching rate of full chromium is up to 90%, when the process has been operated for 7-10 days under the conditions of 25-40C and consecutive spray by circular leachate. The content of Cr(VI) in chromium-containing slag after detoxified meet the national identification standard for extraction procedure inxicity for hazardous wastes(GB5085-1996) in China, moreover approximately 90% of Cr(VI) existing in chromium-containing slag has been recycled.

The total pressure oxidation treatment of arsenical copper ore and concentrate from the El Indio mine of Banick Gold was tested in benchtop autoclave treatment. The concentrate oxidation typically achieved ~95% copper extraction. Copper extraction was limited by the reprecipitation of a complex precipitate containing arsenic. Gold extraction by cyanidation of the oxidation residue was around 95%. Silver extractions were less than 10% due to the formation of argentojarosite in the autoclave. The total pressure oxidation of the whole ore sample was more successful. Copper extractions of 98-99% were routine achieved. Gold extraction by cyanidation was +95%. Silver extraction could be increased to as high as 95% by using the lime boil treatment. A process flowsheet was proposed based on the results achieved. Copper recovery was proposed by direct solvent extraction and electrowinning of copper by treating the dilute solution from the autoclave discharge.

"Directional solidification is an essential refining step to obtain solar grade silicon from metallurgical silicon. This step can be carried out in a Bridgman furnace, where nearly constant temperature gradients and solidification velocities are imposed on the solid-liquid interface. In the present work, this directional solidification was conducted in a static furnace, in which large temperature gradients and low solidification velocities were enforced to increase macrosegregation. The resulting ingots were analyzed regarding their macrostructures, microstructures and chemical composition. Using measured cooling curves in the ingot as boundary conditions, a mathematical model based on the concept of a stagnant liquid layer at the solid-liquid interface was implemented to predict the macrosegregation profiles. The chemical analyses of the ingots show macrosegregation of several impurities to the ingots top. The mathematical model indicates that liquid convection plays an important role in stabilizing the planar solid-liquid interface, increasing the macrosegregation of impurities.IntroductionMost of silicon used for photovoltaic (PV) energy production is obtained by chemical processes, such as, Siemens and its derivations [1]. However, these chemical processes have drawbacks related to relatively high energy consumption and investment costs, and to safety and environmental problems. In order to overcome these difficulties and to fulfill the silicon demand for PV applications, several metallurgical routes are under development [2] to produce silicon of enough purity to PV applications (SoG-Si) from metallurgical grade silicon (MG-Si).Metallurgical routes involve different steps among which the directional solidification is pointed out as a fundamental one [1]. Directional solidification can cause macrosegregation of impurities to the last part of the ingot to solidify. The impurity segregation during solidification is related to the low solute partition coefficient (k0) between liquid and solid silicon. Most of the impurities in MG-Si have k0 << 1, except for boron, phosphorus and oxygen, which require specific steps of the metallurgical routes to be eliminated. The equilibrium partition coefficient and the solubility limits for the most important impurities in MG-Si are shown in table 1"

Four Air Liquide Shrouded Injectors (ALSI ) were installed and operated for over one year in a Peirce-Smith converter at the Falconbridge nickel smelter in Falconbridge, Ontario, Canada. A shrouded injector consists of an inner pipe and an annulus, through which high oxygen enriched air and nitrogen flow, respectively The nitrogen cools the injector and protects the refractory in the vicinity of the injector tip, allowing for substantial increases in oxygen flow rates to the converting reactions. Several injector designs were tested to study the effect of changes in the cross-sectional area and changes in the entrance geometry of the annulus. An optimum design would minimize the injection pressure required for a given flow rate to achieve choked flow conditions at the tip of the injector. The operation of the ALSI was simple and did not require any special care or maintenance, either between blows or between converter cycles. In particular, the shrouded injectors did not require punching, as is the case with conventional tuyeres. In terms of refractory performance, the ALSI, operating at 30-40 % oxygen enrichment, were superior or equal to the conventional tuyeres, which operated at 21-23% oxygen. The results of the demonstration program led Falconbridge Limited to implement the ALSI technology on a commercial scale The paper presents the demonstration program results in terms of gas flow rates, accretion formation, punchless operation and refractory wear.

Many metal recovery processes Involve heterogeneous reactions In porous media accompanied by fluid flow and mass transfer. Modeling such systems Is difficult because of the number of rate processes Involved and is complicated even further by effects due to the structure of the porous medium. Data on even bulk properties of the medium are often severely limited or unavailable. For many such systems, a cell model may provide, an attractive alternative to models based on transport ,mechanisms in a differential volume. A cell model requires less input data and is computationally efficient. Identical residence time distributions can be obtained with models of both types, and both allow conversion and concentration profiles and histories to be calculated. The formulation and properties of cell models for metals recovery are described in detail.

Several new hydrometallurgical plants have been built in the past years. They have implemented new processes to treat new type of ores. New technologies have been used to improve metallurgical performance from the start. The cycle times between knowledge generation and innovation are often neglected in the traditional capital expenditures and building of these new process plants. The paper reviews several implementations in which they have started with new ways of using information management from the beginning. The implementation of a real time performance management infrastructure is reviewed to assist in the implementation of mine to product strategies, metallurgical mass balances, solvent extraction composition statistical process control, methods to minimize organic losses, reduce variable costs and to improve metal extraction. Several examples are provided to improve operations by simplifying the access and analysis of information from assets and metallurgical processes. Continuous improvement and innovations have been enabled to minimize start times and for faster troubleshooting and resolution of operational problems.

"In order to demonstrate how CFD can help scientists and engineers to better understand the fundamentals of engineering processes, a number of examples are shown and discussed. The paper will cover (i) special aspects of continuous casting of steel including turbulence, motion and entrapment of non-metallic inclusions, and impact of softreduction; (ii) multiple flow phenomena and multiscale aspects during casting of large ingots including flow induced columnar-toequiaxed transition and 3D formation of channel segregation; (iii) multiphase magneto hydrodynamics during electro-slag remelting; and (iv) melt flow and solidification of thin but large centrifugal castings.IntroductionSince the Bronze and the Iron Ages, material processing, and here especially metallurgy, has got a global importance for the economic well-being of the societies. It is thus understandable that metallurgy has changed from arts and crafts into an engineering specialty, where the knowledge of centuries has lead to an enormous commercial and technical efficiency. However, increasing competition and the necessitation of energy and CO2 reduced manufacturing methods requires the improvement of existing techniques and even the development of new, alternative production technologies. On the other hand, the opacity of liquid and solid materials and the involved high temperatures makes the experimental penetration of metallurgical processes and with that the attainment of detailed process knowledge quite difficult."

In order to overcome weak points of steel for its engineering applications, in particular, for environmentally benign, energy-efficient, lightweight engineering systems, a number of new steels have been proposed, especially to improve strength-to-weight ratio (specific strength). Mass production of these steels, however, has encountered a serious roadblock particularly in the steel refining and casting processes. This is because their chemistries and cleanliness requirements are vastly different from those of the conventional steels, and thus an incremental improvement of the prevailing process technologies is found hard to meet the requirements. In this study, a new process is proposed, which employs inert gas bubbles in the shroud nozzle, liquid steel drops in the degassing chamber, and the siphon transport for continuous casting. The proposed process which integrates the final refining and cleaning steps prior to casting is expected to be a technologically disruptive innovation on the conventional counterpart. The effectiveness of the individual steps is discussed with experimental results.

An experimental study was undertaken to investigate the feasibility of utilizing vapor transport for the treatment of heavy metal contaminated smelter soils. The focus of this project was to develop process chemistries that would make incineration a viable process for the treatment these soils. The experimentation concentrated on the elimination of arsenic, cadmium, and lead, and was performed in a laboramry scale rotary kiln setup. Three soil samples from non¬ferrous smelter sites, which contained various concentrations of contaminants, were utilized in the experimentation. Three chemistries were investigated for the volatilization of the heavy metals: Chloridizing volatilization, ferric chloride vapor complex formation, and the use of oxygen potential control. The samples were analyzed for residual heavy metals so that the extractions could be determined. However, the ultimate test was the leachability of the residual arsenic, cadmium, and lead, as determined by the TCLP test. The results firmly establish that incineration is a feasible process for the treatment of metal contaminated soils. It was found that no one process chemistry is suitable for all different soil samples. A two-step process consisting of a reducing step followed by a hydro-chlorination step was required to make Soil Sample-B pass the TCLP tests for all three heavy metals. Soil Sample-A passed the TCLP tests for arsenic, cadmium, and lead using a hydro-chlorination process at a minimum temperature of 700°C. In addition to passing the TCLP mm for Soil Sample-A and Soil Sample-B, 70 to 80 percent removal of the impurities was accomplished. This demonstrates that the leachability of the impurities was decreased primarily due to the removal of a large fraction of the contaminants, Soil Sample-C possessed very high levels of cadmium and lead and only moderate extractions of the impurities were generated from this soil. The arsenic TCLP test was passed at 500&apos;C using a process gas containing ferric chloride and at temperatures of 700°C and above using chlorination of hydro-chlorination.

The condition of slag in a pyrometallurgical reactor is vital to ensuring control of the process. A new technique based on multivariate image analysis (MIA) of digital images has been developed to provide an online measurement of important slag characteristics, such as the presence of exposed metal, the presence of solid phases, and temperature. This paper shall describe the technique and provide some results from analysis using industrial plant data.

This paper will review work done in our laboratory on the formation, thermodynamics and crystallization of aluminum based metallic glass with the addition of rare earth elements. The results demonstrate that the metallic glasses are truly amorphous and not microcrystalline and that they are unusual in their formation because the alloys contain 90 at. % aluminum and there is no deep eutectic present in the phase diagram. Tensile strengths that exceed 900 MPa are obtained for several of the compositions and exceed 1000 MPa after partial crystallization.

Tetra Technologies CCIX? (continuous countercurrent ion exchange) system has been involved in a wide range of uranium concentration, separation and purification applications over the past 40 years. Uranium ion exchange applications have ranged from the treatment of copper heap leach solution containing 5 parts per million of uranium to the treatment of high strength sulfuric acid solutions containing several thousand parts per million of uranium. The flexibility and the countercurrent mode of operation and other unique features of the CCIX? have resulted in successful uranium recovery from these solutions and many others.
