During iron ore pellet production, bentonite clay is used as a binder. Typical pellet plants spend from $3 million to $5 million annually for the clay. If bentonite dosages could be reduced by using it more efficiently, a significant cost savings would result. If the binding mechanisms can be completely understood, procedures can be developed to use bentonite more efficiently. Classical bentonite bonding theory is based on the behavior of bentonite at low percent solids and high mixing shear rates. Under these conditions, bentonite was understood to expand, disperse into platelets, and dry into a bonding "film" or "gel." However, these are not the conditions that exist during pelletization, which is carried out at high percent solids and relatively low shear rates. In this paper SEM imaging was used to identify and explain the bonding mechanisms of bentonite on the surface of magnetite concentrate. It was determined that bentonite would form a fibrous network under the proper conditions and that the formation of these fibers corresponded with an increase in the bonding of particles by the bentonite.

The well-being of any company is directly related to the well-being of its employees and to the effectiveness with which the personnel resource is managed. In an era when personnel management has steadily become more complex, there is an increased awareness of employee information systems at all levels of management due to: (1) regulations enacted by federal, state, and local government agencies; (2) technological advances within the mining industry which have resulted in the requirement for highly skilled personnel; (3) increasing concern for the confidentiality of employee information; and (4) management's need for information for planning purposes to control costs and for early recognition of trends and potential problems. In the past it was sufficient to maintain records manually. Today computers are necessary to provide information on short notice and effectively manipulate large volumes of' data. This discussion will describe the following aspects of employee information systems: (1) collection and maintenance of information, and (2) applications which include employee health, salary administration, management re- sources, and labor negotiations.

"INTRODUCTION Drill and blast (DnB) represents the most important, and sometimes the most costly processes in a mine.. The cost of drilling and blasting operations greatly contributes to the “high cost trends of the overall mining operations” (Afum B. O. and Temeng V. A. 2015). The use of available information to improve the DnB processes can be the difference between a highly expensive process and an optimized one. Mining operations have access to several types of data sets and key information from a wide variety of different systems. This information is normally used to improve, evaluate and apply processes for drilling and blasting. This may include different types of data from the different stages of the process (before, during, and after the drilling and blasting operations), such as hole locations (planned and actual), penetration rates, drill operators, fragmentation (expected and resulting), explosive (design and usage), geology, vibration, and others. This information can be used on its own or combined for further analysis to reduce costs, improve safety, and evaluate results. Fortunately, due to advances in mining software, drill and blast engineers can exploit this data and create reports to evaluate results and improve the DnB process. However, as users start combining information from multiple datasets and establishing standard operating procedures for reporting this data across multiple sites, it becomes valuable to create auditable, automated, and sustainable processes for handling the information. In many cases the task of aggregating and standardizing the data formats has already been completed and is available to consumers via the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). A data warehouse team extracts data from the source systems and transforms it so that it is meaningful for decision support (Barbara H. Wixom, Hugh J. Watson, 2007). Our initial implementation plan for the DnB solution included using data stored at the sites; however we learned early on in the process that much of the work for aggregating and supplying the required data was already completed. The goal for this case study is two-fold: to show how information can be used to make decisions and improve processes, highlighting the value of using an EDW for managing Drill&Blast information; and to discuss how technical challenges encountered during the implementations were resolved. This paper is targeted at users that want to better manage their DnB data or try to set up standardized workflows for using this information. This case study will discuss the process of implementing a DnB workflow at multiple sites within Freeport McMoRan Inc (FMI) using both data at the sites and information available using the EDW. The paper will begin with an overview of the project. The discussion will then describe how DnB processes were used to set up daily workflows in order to provide information for evaluating process and making decisions. The final section will discuss some of the technical challenges and how they were solved, as well as possible next steps for further improving the workflow."

Solvent extraction is widely used in hydrometallurgical processing of uranium for purification and upgrading leach solutions prior to recovery of metal values. Conventional solvent extraction processing utilizes mixer-settler units to achieve mixing of the aqueous and organic phases. Use of mixer-settlers permits continuous treatment of feed, but the processing rate is restricted by the time required for phase separation after mixing. Because of the high-shear type mixing used in a mixer settler a portion of the organic phase becomes mechanically entrained in the aqueous resulting in loss of extractant. For this reason application of mixer-settler units is often limited by the settling area required for phase separation, especially for systems where high volume throughputs are desirable or necessary. Several alternatives to mixer-settler operations involving the use of column extractors have been proposed. Packed columns (1-2), in which organic and aqueous phases are fed countercurrently, utilize packing materials similar to those used in gas absorption or distillation columns. Extraction columns utilizing rotating(3-5) or reciprocating elements(6-7) to achieve mixing have also been developed. Van Dijek(8) originated pulsed columns, in which mechanical or air pulsing of the phases enhances the mixing in the vessel. Each of the above column processes involve varying degrees of mechanical complexity which may lead to operational difficulties.

I. INTRODUCTION The Atlanta Research Chamber is an UMTA-sponsored applied research facility studying tunnel design, excavation and support systems. It is located directly below Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. It is included in the CN-120 contract to build the Peachtree Center subway station, a part of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) multi-billion dollar "Phase A" 53-mile transit project, which is 80 percent funded by UMTA with 20 percent provided by local authorities in Atlanta and Fulton and DeKalb counties (Figure 1). The Research Chamber is located immediately south of the main Peachtree Center Station cavern, and is in part an enlargement of the pre-existing Pilot Tunnel excavated to provide bidders on the CN-120 contract a view of the rock conditions (Figure 2). The Research Chamber lies some 3 meters above, and is approximately parallel to, the twin Running Tunnels. The Research Chamber is 18 meters long and has the same 5.5 meter diameter horseshoe shape design dimensions as the twin Running Tunnels.

A fairly complex analysis is required to select, or evaluate a piece of excavating and bulk handling equipment and obtain its performance. At present there is little agreement as to what specific points should be considered, and even less on what procedure to follow. This paper provides both of these in a consistent and direct form. The analysis applies to all types and sizes of equipment from the bulldozer and the continuous miner, to the B.W.E. The importance of the equipment characteristics, job activities, and work conditions are stressed and separate analytical stems are established in a flow chart for these. They are combined using suitability tests in the following steps: 1) problem statement, 2) natural conditions, 3) suitability guidelines, 4) appropriate equipment types, 5) operational activities, 6) encumbered space, 7) geometric design, 8) equipment sizing, 9) failure and limits, 10) performance and consumption, 11) public policy checks, and 12) costs and profitability. Public policy and economics while considered throughout receive emphasis towards the end. The procedure is iterative, containing distinct feedback loops. Specifying the steps and sequence provides a necessary structure which has long been overdue.

The US minerals industry, as well we know, has been hit hard by the recent recession and is faced with what is projected to be a slow recovery. Even so, there was an underlying feeling of optimism at American Mining Congress' International Mining Show in Las Vegas, NV, Oct 11-14. More than 25,000 people attended during a particularly rough financial year, dispelling fears that attendance would dip sharply below 1978's 30,000 plus tally. The equipment expositionheld every four years-was the largest show of its kind this year in the Western Hemisphere in terms of exhibit space, providing an extensive view of mining-related equipment. In addition to the nearly 700 exhibits occupying more than 445 hm2 (11 acres), 20 technical sessions were held covering topics ranging from minerals availability and the state of the mining industries to communications, computers, and accounting. Government officials were well represented, with six US senators and five US representatives participating in various convention functions. Sen. Paul Laxalt (R-NV) was the keynote speaker at the welcoming luncheon. Other senators involved in the show included Howard W. Cannon (D-NV), Pete V. Domenici (R-NM), James A. McClure (R-ID), Frank H. Murkowski (R-AK), and Steven D. Symms (R-ID). Representatives on the program were Joseph M. Gaydos (D-PA), Guy Vander Jagt (R-MI), Don Young (R-AK), Jim Santini (D-NV), and Ceil Heftel (D-HI). There were also many international vistors at the show, including exhibitors from Australia, Austria, Canada, England, Finland, Sweden, South Africa, and West Germany. Equipment Highlights Equipment and services featured at the exposition ranged from aerial mapping to wire rope. Aisle space alone between exhibits exceeded 8 km (5 miles). And the companies represented ranged from small businesses to large corporations. Some of the company products described here are representative of the many exhibitors in attendance. Atlas Copco's extensive display of rock drilling and tunnel and shaft boring equipment featured its Boomer H-201, the newest addition to its line of underground drifting rigs; the ROC 306, a new track-mounted, high pressure down-the-hole drill rig; a new hydraulic surface crawler drill, the ROC 712H, designed for small and medium-size holes in quarries and small open-pit mines; a computerized analysis system, CARE (see page 1570), designed to project productivity and operating costs for various mining operations; several electro-hydraulic loaders, including the new rail bound LM E60 and LM E80, and two Hagg-loaders-the 7HR and 10HR-that use two digging arms to rake and guide muck; a mechanized blasthole charging system; rock bolting equipment and its new Swellex roof bolting method; Sandvik Coromant drill steel and bits; and its new Jarva R200 raise boring machine.

Design of chain pillars in a longwall mine setting is one of the main engineering controls on the global and local stability of the mine. Challenges with roof instabilities, floor heaves, and pillar failures can be alleviated, to some extent, by careful design of gateroad configurations and chain pillars. This work investigates three different alternative designs in a three-entry-system gateroad configuration with an inter-panel barrier in a longwall mine in Virginia. Starting with the current design, which has faced challenges such as excessive floor heave, a geomechanical model developed in 3DEC software is validated by monitoring in-situ pillar stress in the yield, abutment, and barrier pillars in the mine. Next, three different chain pillar designs are evaluated in the model with a focus on roof sagging, floor heave, and pillar average stress. Results show the relationships among the alternative designs and instabilities associated with roof, pillar, and floor in the study mine, providing insights for optimizing longwall mining designs in deep-cover settings.

New Mexico lies at the eastern edge of one of the world’s great metal-bearing provinces hosting numerous Laramide and Paleogene mineral deposits. Southwestern New Mexico contains Laramide porphyry Cu (±Mo, Au) and Paleogene Mo-W deposits. Porphyry deposits are generally large, low-grade deposits containing Cu, Fe, Mo, Au sulfides (and other metal sulfides) associated with porphyritic intrusions and exhibit characteristic alteration styles. Porphyry deposits can also be spatially and temporally associated with skarn deposits and polymetallic veins. All of these deposits have the potential to host various critical minerals, including Cu, Zn, Bi, Co, Ni, rare earth elements (REE), Te, and W. Critical minerals may be found as substitutions within ore minerals or as separate mineral phases. These deposits are constrained using 40Ar/39Ar dating into three ore-producing magmatic pulses: 1) ~78–71 Ma Laramide pulse, 2) ~59–50 Ma, Laramide pulse, and 3) ~40–30 Ma Paleogene pulse. New and historic whole-rock geochemical data have highlighted areas with critical minerals potential that require further study.

In 2015, the Subtropolis Mine in Petersburg, OH, experienced a massive ground collapse that continues to grow over time. Horizontal stress effects have affected the roof at this operation in the past and may have played a large role in this collapse. Horizontal stress can impact the roof and floor stability and endanger the health and safety of underground stone miners. Mines experiencing damaging effects from horizontal stress typically find that the principal stress direction is the same throughout the mine and the region. At the Subtropolis Mine the principal horizontal stress direction appears to change as conditions change and differs from the regional horizontal stress, particularly near the collapse or other roof fall areas. The growth over time of this collapse and other roof falls have been captured and analyzed using geologic mapping, 3D LiDAR scanning, numerical modeling and geographic information systems like ArcGIS. Utilizing these tools to better understand sitespecific conditions can be critical to reducing the potential of massive ground collapses in the underground limestone industry.

Fairbanks Gold Mining, Inc. (FGMI) began blending and processing True North ore at their Fort Knox mill on April 12, 2001.Gold extraction subsequently dropped from 88% to 71% during the last week of April 2001. 25% of the gold values remaining in the leach tailings were gravity recoverable free gold. Significant quantities of stibnite and arsenopyrite were also identified in the tailings. In laboratory bottle roll tests, the gold extraction from a composite of leach circuit feed collected during the same period was 72.6%, when leached at an average NaCN concentration of 0.16 g/kg. The extraction increased to 82.4% and 91.7% with 0.5 g/kg NaCN, and 0.5g/kg NaCN plus 0.075 g/kg Pb(NO3)2, respectively. A passivating layer surrounding liberated gold particles and resulting from sulfide mineral dissolution, likely contributes to reduced gold recovery, which can be substantially increased by the addition of lead nitrate. Lead species remain in the solid residues after leaching and were not mobilized using Meteoric Water Mobility Procedure.

In the mining industry, conversion of fine particles into a slurry is often part of the normal processing of the ore. Therefore. from a system's point of view, slurry transportation would be considered as a natural alternative, all the way from the working face to the final processing. In underground mines, there is sometimes a considerable inflow of ground water that has to be pumped out. When the mine dewatering installations are integrated with a hydraulic hoisting system, the cost of power needed to pump out the ground water can be excluded from the cost of hoisting, compared with other modes of transporting the solids to the surface. The chief advantage of hydraulic hoisting is that the hoisting capacity can be increased at comparatively low total cost without necessitating the sinking of new shafts. Alternative examples include deepening of the existing mechanical hoisting system, truck, or conveyor belts transport in ramps to the present level. These often become very expensive. The economic effectiveness of hydraulic hoisting and hydraulic design considerations have been discussed by Kostuik (1965) and Sellgren (1985, 1986) for both small shallow mines and large deep underground mines. Objective and scope The objective of this study was to demonstrate the feasibiliy of hydraulic hoisting in hypothetical examples of mine deepening. Underground grinding to a maximum particle size of about 700 um (about 25 mesh) is considered. The pumping of ground ore products with positive displacement plunger or membrane type of pumps at working pressures of up to 15 MPa (2200 psi) is a thoroughly tested technique (Venton, 1986). Hydraulic hoisting system A hydraulic hoisting system is described schematically in Fig. 1. The ore is mined, handled, and crushed conventionally. It is then ground wet underground. The slurry is then temporarily stored in an agitated tank and pumped to an agitated receiving tank on the surface. The ore is then further processed in the concentrator. The capacity of a pipeline is very high. For example, an annual production of 500 Kt (550,000 st) of ore can be handled in a 100-mm-diam (4-in.-diam) pipeline. Systems layout - economic effectiveness Schematic mine layouts are presented that represent situations where hydraulic hoisting often is the most economical alternative. A situation where the ore is trucked to the level of the existing hoisting system is shown in Fig. 2 (following page). With hydraulic hoisting, only a shaft for ventilation, pipe- line, and personnel are needed. In a first phase (Fig. 2). a hydraulic hoisting installation with crushing and grinding units, storage facilities, and pumps has been located at a level of about 400 to 600 m (1310 to 1970 ft) below the surface. Since the early 1970's, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has carried out exploration geophysical research on non-basemetal strategic mineral commodities, including uranium, lithium, gold, potash, and chromite. The chromite study (largely completed) and the potash study (still going on) carried out during the past 4 years have not been aimed at the discovery of new ore reserves, but instead were designed to complement exploration by private mining companies. The USGS has carried out research not normally conducted by these companies, but which can be used by them in their efforts to increase production of strategic minerals. Results of the chromite and potash studies highlight the importance of: 1) a laboratory-research phase (petrophysical and petrographic studies) at the beginning of work on any new commodity; 2) an operative or functional ore-deposition model to serve as a conceptual framework, and the necessity to continually test, refine, and modify it during the study; 3) indirect geologic/geochemical indicators, secondary associations, and the use of multiple physical properties; and 4) the use of a systematic inverse-cost sequential-exploration (i.e. lowest resolution and lowest cost first) strategy to keen the exploration economically reasonable. The keystone to the success of the study is frequent and substantive dialogue among geologists, geophysicists, and geochemists.

In 1969, the OECD conducted a survey internationally to determine the status and needs for research and development in the field of tunneling. The findings also have some validity for underground excavation in general and for underground mining per se. Of the 17 countries responding to the survey, the U.S. leads in the level of support: $21.8 million and 720 man-years of effort over the last ten-year period. The total volume of R/D for the 17 countries was estimated to be $86 million and 5800 man-years. Performance of research was primarily by government agencies and public utilities (70%); the balance was conducted by private organizations and universities (15% each). In the categories of R/D subjects surveyed, three--Wk mechanics, soil mechanics, and geological exploration--outstripped all the rest in priority of effort to date. Ground support, equipment development, excavation, and environmental control received intermediate attention. The subject areas in which the least R/D effort has been expended are materials handling and systems evaluation. For the future, those R/D areas rated the most crucial to achieve technological progress in tunneling were excavation, ground support, and materials handling. The survey findings of tunneling activity indicated (1) a disturbingly low level of R/D activity in the private sector, (2) the necessity for a reordering of priorities in directing research efforts in the future, and (3) a lack of recognition to date of the importance of systems evaluation in R/D activities.

This article describes research conducted by the University of Alabama's Mineral Resources Institute on removing sulfur from coal using a combination of gravity concentration and flotation methods. The research used the gravity and centrifugal force capabilities of Humphrey's spiral to remove part of the pyritic sulfur and ash. Flotation of the Humphrey's spiral coal concentrate removed additional sulfur and ash. In addition to obtaining good recoveries of high quality coal, the tests demonstrated that pyrite in the wastes could be isolated as enriched flotation products by the combined gravity-flotation approach. Domestic coal production in 1980 reached a record 757 Mt (835 million st). Forecasts are that coal production and use will approach 907 Mt (1 billion st) by 1985, with much of the increased production being used for electrical generation. Of current production, it is estimated that about 454 Mt (500 million st) of coal nationwide are subjected to some degree of cleaning, ranging from crushing and screening to gravity concentration and flotation. With expanded coal production and more rigid controls placed on coal combustion, it is reasonable to assume that the tonnage subjected to some form of preparation will increase, with time, thereby adding to the burden of coal rejects being generated. A major problem associated with increased coal use for electricity generation is the need for utilities to conform to emerging federal air quality standards for sulfur oxide emissions from power plants. To a lesser extent, other industrial operations burning coal face a similar situation. Controlling sulfur oxide emissions by using low-sulfur coal or resorting to stack gas desulfurization are two recognized approaches, but removing sulfur from the coal, if possible, by physical beneficiation before combustion is preferred because of its simplicity and lower cost. Reducing the inorganic sulfur in coal to tolerable limits by physical beneficiation, including flotation, as now practiced, is still relatively inefficient and has not kept pace with the more sophisticated physical beneficiation approaches generally employed by the nonfuel minerals industry. As one phase of a broad program conducted by the Mineral Resources Institute at the University of Alabama on sampling and evaluating impounded fine size waste coal, tests were made using samples from two impoundments to determine the quality of coal recoverable by a combination of Humphrey's spiral concentration and flotation. Particular attention was given to organic and inorganic sulfur deportment and distribution in the various products. Another objective was to determine if pyrite in the waste could be recovered for possible marketing. The use of Humphrey's spirals to concentrate fine coal was practiced as early as 1947. At that time, the Hudson Coal Co. used spirals to concentrate anthracite fines. In 1950, spirals were used to treat fine-size bituminous coal and later, in 1976, spirals were reportedly used for removing pyrite from fine-size coal. More recent investigations have discussed the use of Humphrey's spirals for treating fine-size waste coal in Alabama. Samples Description Washer waste samples were obtained from two impoundments. One sample was representative of waste generated during washing steam coal from the American, Pratt, and Nickel plate seams in Alabama. The other sample represented metallurgical coal washer waste from processing coal from the Carter, Johnson, and Milldale seams. Partial samples analyses are shown in Table 1, and screen analyses of the samples are given in Tables 2 and 3. Screen ana¬lyses showed that one sample contained about 4% of material coarser than 2 mm (10 mesh) and the other contained about 13% of plus 2 mm (10 mesh) material. Also, the analyses indicated that ash and sulfur increased as the material's particle size decreased. Experimental Laboratory Tests Sink and float tests using a heavy liquid (1.4 specific gravity) were made on the different screen sizes shown in Tables 2 and 3 to determine the effectiveness of gravity concentration for separating coal from pyrite and other gangue constituents. Tests indicated that gravity separation, under optimum conditions, could be expected to yield coal products containing 10-12% ash, and 0.2-0.3% pyritic sulfur. The important role that mineral aggregates assume today in the construction and chemical industries is best attested to by the astronomical tonnage figures for the annual production of aggregates in the United States as reported by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in their "Minerals Yearbook." For 1965, latest publication available, the tabulation shows a total of 1,716,000,000 tons made up of 30,000,000 slag, 908,000,000 sand and gravel, and 778,000,000 crushed stone. Lee, Director, British Slag Federation, in a paper presented before the 8th Annual conference of the British Institute of Works and Highway Superintendents, he estimates that the probable world consumption of slag is in the order of 100,000,000 tons showing--Great Britain with 10,000,000 tons, Germany, 15,000,000 tons, France, 1$000,000 tons and the United States with 30,000,000 tons. Thus it is seen that the United States accounts for almost one-third of the world's consumption of slag and the 3 west European powers another third.

The exploration for a commercially acceptable deposit of limestone is consid¬ered by many to be a relatively easy task; however, trying to locate a zone of high calcium limestone of economic thickness within a formation, which outcrops only in a narrow band varying in width from a quarter mile to ten miles, adds considerably to the normal problems experienced during an exploration program. The existence of varying glacial and karst features in the outcrop area intensified the problems encountered and complicated the interpretation of the economic value of the deposit. This paper highlights a recently completed five year exploration program during which approximately 3,900 acres of ground in seven civil townships were evaluated as potential sources of high-calcium limestone. Details are given with respect to the final site chosen and the methods used in determining the suitability of the site. This site exhibited many karat features and several methods were utilized to determine the effect of these features on the gross characteristics of the deposit. Aerial photography for both mapping and interpretation were utilized. Black and white panchromatic photography, black and white infrared and color infrared photography were flown. Resistivity, diamond core drilling and close-interval angering were used to supplement the information obtained from the aerial photography.

11.1-FRAGMENTATION PRINCIPLES WARREN W. KRECH Energy must be supplied to rock by direct or indirect means to fragment that rock. The amount is dependent upon the properties of the rock and the type of loading system. Fragmentation energy is consumed by three main mechanisms: (1) creation of new surface area (fracture energy), (2) friction (plasticity) and (3) elastic wave energy dispersion. The loading method determines the relative proportions and the amount of energy consumed in fragmenting a given rock type. Unconfined tensile failure consumes the least energy, with an increasing amount of energy required as the rock is more highly confined within a compressive stress field during fragmentation. The way energy is applied by tools to cause rock or mineral fragmentation is important in determining fragmentation efficiency. Rock-tool interaction should always be controlled to the fullest extent possible to optimize the combination of rate of energy input and fragmentation energy requirements. While the direct cost of energy, (dollars per horsepower-hour) may at first glance appear low relative to other hourly costs, there is a tie between power consumption and other cost factors, such as maintenance and wear. A high rate of energy application utilizing a rock-tool interaction producing only unconfined tensile failure would provide the most efficient fragmentation. No tool that produces a combination of high energy input rate and a loading system that produces failure under only conditions of unconfined tensile load now exists. Present mining methods and tools produce failure under conditions of high compressive confinement, high dispersive energy loss and high frictional energy requirements. Thus, while generally applying energy at high rates, they are highly inefficient with respect to energy consumed in fragmenting rock. To best design fragmentation tools and optimize fragmentation systems it would be desirable to know how rock properties influence breakage. At present, rock properties directly- related to fragmentation are undefined. Although present testing technology- does not permit rigorous definition of in-situ rock fragmentation behavior, several properties (mechanical and physical) commonly are used to indicate the relative case with which rock breaks. The more common test is for uniaxial compressive or tensile strength of cylindrical cores taken from intact portions of the in-situ rock (testing details are provided ill Sec. 6.2, Rock Mechanics). The strength of rock is influenced by the environmental conditions imposed on the rock. Those of most importance in rock are (1) confining pressure. (2) pore fluid pressure, (3) temperature and (4) rate of load application. Increase in confining pressure, as with increasing depth beneath the earth's surface or under the action of a fragmentation tool, causes an increase in rock strength. Increases from atmospheric pressure to 10.000 psi commonly cause up to n fourfold increase in the compressive strength of crystalline rock. Apparent rock strength decreases as pore fluid pressure increases, since it decreases the effect of confining pressure. The effective stress concept of soil mechanics generally applies to rock. Although chemical effects of pore fluids influence rock strength, they geologically are small compared to the confining pressure effect, except for a small minority of rock types. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this article is to outline the data requirements for selecting a proper underground mining method and to discuss the general steps taken in selecting that method. Determining the appropriate mining method is an iterative process that continues throughout the life of a mineral deposit. We will discuss the subject from the standpoint of a feasibility study, where a realistic assessment is necessary in order to determine investment merit. The feasibility stage of a project is that point where the drilling program has defined sufficient geologic reserves to consider mining the deposit but little or no underground development has been done. Primary parameters for consideration in choosing a mining method are 1) geometry of the deposit; 2) distribution of grade; 3) rock mass strength for the deposit, as well as the hanging wall and footwall; 4) mining cost and capitalization requirements; 5) mining rate; 6) type and availability of labor; 7) environmental considerations; and 8) other site-specific conditions. Of these parameters, the first four have the most impact on determining the general mining method to be employed.
