The leaching of gold in ammoniacal solutions containing various oxidants in an autoclave has been investigated. Also studied are thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of the ammonia leaching of gold and silver. The variables studied included stirring speed, temperature, concentration of ammonia, ammonium, and various anions. Arrhenius activation energy values were found to be between 47.1 kJ/mol and 86.2 kJ/mol depending upon the kinds of oxidants used. An electrochemical reaction controlling mechanism has been proposed for the dissolution reaction. The leaching behavior of gold and silver from various ores in ammoniacal solutions containing various oxidants has also been investigated. The samples tested included sulfidic as well as carbonaceous refractory ores. The recoveries of gold and silver from these refractory ores were better than 96% within 2-3 hours of leaching time.

Precious metal mineralization at Mt. Hamilton, NV is associated with a polymetallic, garnet-pyroxene skarn system developed in middle to upper Cambrian calcareous shale, limestone, and dolomite. The skarn is developed around the Cretaceous Seligman and Monte Cristo calc-alkaline stocks. Gold is associated with intense retrograde alteration. Later epithermal quartz veins contain gold, silver, base-metal sulfides, and sulfosalts cross-cut skarn alteration. Westmont Mining Inc. is currently developing two mineralized zones containing a geologic resource of about 7 Mt (7.7 million st) that averages 1.7 g/t (0.05 oz per st) gold and 17.2 g/t (0.5 oz per st) silver. The project will have an estimated mine life of seven years, with a planned annual production rate of I t (35,000 oz) of gold and 9.3 t (300,000 oz) of silver.

The construction of a large span, high-walled underground opening in a low strength shale rock is unprecedented. The feasibility of constructing a pumped storage project with several tunnels and a large underground powerhouse in low strength shale rested largely on the feasibility of building stable openings large enough to accommodate the required equipment. Because of the lack of experience with large openings in shale, the decision was made to excavate a test adit and test chamber and conduct a multi-faceted geotechnical evaluation program designed to yield pertinent in-situ data on the ability of the shale to accommodate a large underground opening. Factors considered in the shape, size, orientation, and location of the test chamber were: (1) similarity to the anticipated powerhouse chamber, (2) nature of the most important data to be obtained, (3) feasibility of construction, and (4) economics.

A high calcium fluidized-bed combustor ash was shown to be an effective binder for iron ore pellets at dosages of 1 % to 2% of the magnetite concentrate weight. Magnetite pellets that were between 1.1 and 12.7 mm (7/16 and 1/2 in.) in diameter were produced with dry crushing strengths greater than 22.3 N (5.0 lb-force) per pellet, which is comparable to the results produced using conventional bentonite binder. The effectiveness of fly-ash-based binders was considerably improved when calcium chloride was added as an accelerator. The addition of calcium chloride at a rate of 0.1 % to 0.2 % of the total powder weight increased the strength of the dried pellets by as much as 22 % compared to the strength of pellets made using fly-ash without accelerators.

A detailed experimental study of the variations in grinding rate with particle size, particle load, ball diameter, ball load, mill diameter, and mill speed was carried out for a soft cement clinker and a hard cement clinker. The effects of the ball diameter, ball load, and particle load were observed to be material (hardness) independent, and those of the particle size, mill diameter, and mill speed to be material dependent. A sharp change in grinding behavior was observed for both the clinkers at about 150 µm size. Below this critical size: (1) the hardness difference between the two clinkers became insignificant, (2) variation in the grinding rate with particle size became markedly more pronounced, and (3) mill speed had little or no effect on grinding rate. The importance of these results in the context of process optimization and control is discussed.

One technique for controlling ongoing acidic drainage is to relocate and submerge net-acid-generating waste rock in a lake or water-retaining impoundment. This can lead to the overall improvement of water quality and the reduction In short-term environmental liabilities. A case study of this technique is the Eskay Creek Mine in northern British Columbia. Some findings of the study are: (1) the addition of lime to each truckload of rock, based on its rinse pH, neutralized the accumulated acidity and suppressed the accumulated-metal release, (2) only 10-20% of the dump's neutralization potential had been consumed when acidic drainage appeared, (3) water chemistry in the watershed recovered roughly three years after relocation, and (4) environmental liability was reduced due to the cessation of on-land acidic drainage with no degradation of lake chemistry.

The decision to accelerate development of Stillwater Mining's East Boulder Mine was made in March of 1998. It required the completion of conceptual designs by July of 1998. This was accomplished through teamwork and close cooperation of mine personnel, engineering firms and vendors, all working toward the common goal of developing an efficient and workable design. Early in the project, representatives of Stillwater Mining, Kilborn International, Parsons Brinckerhoff Transit and Rail Systems, Continental Conveyor, and H.A. Simons met to develop methods to bring the mine into production at a highly accelerated rate and to solve potential bottlenecks, including the movement of personnel, materials, and muck through a 5.6 km (3-1/2 mile) adit. This interaction, including companies not normally associated with the mining industry, led to innovative approaches and designs produced by Kilborn Engineering and Stillwater Mining.

More than 5,300 mining professionals from around the world attended the SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit, March 1-3 in Denver, CO. Seventy three technical sessions highlighted innovative technologies and applications for the development of mineral resources. And the exhibit featured 421 companies worldwide and 632 exhibit booths. The 1999 SME Annual Meeting had 10% international attendance Professionals from outside the United States were guests at the first SME International Reception. Other meeting highlights included the Keynote Session. This pivotal session examined the international experience of North American-based companies. Speakers presented their perspectives on international explorations and operations. Keynote speakers included Robert Buchan, Chairman an( Chief Executive Officer, Kinross Gold; Dave Baker, Director Global Mining Project Management, Caterpillar; and Leendert Krol, Vice President International Operations Newmont Gold. Ihor Kunasz, 1998 SME President, made the introductory remarks.

The method of mine ventilation involving heated air, which is frequently used in mines in cold regions, does not correspond to the natural conditions prevailing in permafrost regions; it is not economical and leads to a series of complications which can be prevented or greatly reduced by lowering the temperature of the air stream entering the mine until it is equal to or very close to the temperature of the frozen ground This paper presents ventilation design approaches which can be engineered to provide the required micro-climate and thus en- sure the stability bf the ground for placer mines in permafrost. Specifically three ventilation design approaches are presented: 1) design based on minimum thermal impact; 2) design based on positive/negative heat accumulation in the existing mine airways; and 3) design based on heat exchanging devices such as thermosyphons placed above ground.

Recently development of cheaper and cleaner energy sources has become a more important and urgent issue, because of the soaring crude oil price and environmental problems such as global warming. In this social context, to establish basic technologies and solve fundamental issues associated with environmental impact assessments, the Environmental Impact Assessment Group of the Research Consortium for Methane Hydrate Resources (MH21 research consortium) in Japan has conducted a number of research and development activities since FY2001. These activities include: 1) surveys of the marine environment that will form the basis of environmental impact assessments associated with methane hydrate development; 2) the development of core technologies to monitor deep-sea environments; 3) research of major issues related to environmental impact assessments; and 4) the development of numerical models to predict the deformation of seafloor sediments containing methane hydrates.

Dense-medium circuits have been installed in many mineral treatment plants since its, original development about thirty years ago. In the intervening, period the process has been thoroughly evaluated and many innovations have been introduced. The Heavy Density. Cyclone is one of the newer systems which has extended the operating range of this process to 65 mesh size. Several different finely divided materials have been used to produce the separating bath but nearly all new plants use a ferro-magnetic medium. The, advantages of magnetic medium include: 1. Smaller recovery plant 2. Lower cost recovery plant both in initial and operating cost 3. Excellent medium stability 4. Dependable medium supply at reasonable and stable cost. Magnetic separators are used to recover this magnetic medium and the smaller plants and lower operating costs are directly related to their use.

The Red Dog massive sulfide deposit is located in the western Brooks Range of Alaska 100 miles north of the village of Kotzebue. It contains the largest zinc reserve in the world. Reserves were doubled in 1995 with the discovery of the Aqqaluk deposit and significantly increased in 1996, with the discovery of a deep zone of mineralization to the north. At present the global reserve and resource is 143 million tonnes of 16.1 % zinc and 4.3% lead. Red Dog is a silica + sulfide synsedimentary replacement deposit hosted in barite and black shale of the Mississippian Kuna Formation. Red Dog was thrust northward during the late Mesozoic Brookian orogeny. Understanding the setting of the deposit at the time of formation and its subsequent deformation history is critical to current exploration efforts and to future discoveries in the district.

This paper describes the use of rock index property testing to obtain rock properties that a.re useful in the design and construction planning of an underground development for civil engineering or mining projects. The index properties discussed include (1) point load; (2) Schmidt hammer hardness; (3) abrasion hardness; and (4) total hardness. The first two index properties correlate to uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus. Discussions are given on the relationship to rock mass properties and the integrated use with semi-empirical, geotechnical design methods. The latter two properties correlate to construction performance parameters and some experience is cited. Examples of data are presented from an index testing program carried out on siltstone, sandstone and limestone rock core samples from a deep borehole drilled in the Paradox Basin of Utah for a nuclear waste repository site investigation.

The problem of long-term production scheduling in an underground coal mine is approached through the concepts of sequencing theory. Based on a typical layout of mining sections, the principles for the approach are: 1. The definition of mining sections as jobs, and mining methods as machines. 2. The reduction of the overall mining activity to the general problem of nonpreemptive scheduling of precedence related jobs on parallel machines. 3. The simplification of the layout to a general type directed network with the nodes representing jobs and the arcs representing precedence relations. 4. The determination of a feasible and near-optimal job schedule given the objective of maximizing the total net present value of the jobs. A general scheduling heuristic is being developed for implementation on an IBM personal computer (PC) as part of an interactive computer system for long-term production planning.

The stability of a liner system is influenced by many factors which can be compiled into four basic groups. They are: 1. the liner system components and physical characteristics; 2. the geometry and slope of the liner system; 3. the loading conditions on the liner system; and 4. the foundation conditions under the liner system. Failures in the liner system that are due to one or more factors from the first three groups usually result in movement relative to the plans of the liner system. Failures associated with factors in the fourth group result in deformation(s) across the liner system section beyond its design limits. For purposes of these discussions a failure in the liner system refers to displacements or movements resulting in physical damage to the liner system such that it can no longer function.

Sustainability management and reporting plays an important role in controlling and communicating a company's efforts in sustainable development. A variety of standards comprising a multitude of indicators often require similar information but with different data quality, level of detail and coverage. This may lead to inconsistencies in external communication because of the difficulties in collection and aggregation of data from different company sites and organisational levels. Using a central database system accessible via internet makes the process of data management more efficient: All relevant information can be collected on-site, with a defined data quality, credibility and consistency. Any type of sustainability indicator can be calculated automatically, once the data is collected. Individual analyses and predefined reports, e.g. GRI G3, can be easily generated and immediately published, making your sustainability communication transparent and reliable.

Continuous improvement has become the watchword of the 1990s for most iron-ore-processing operations. In many instances, this improvement has been achieved through stepwise application of advanced control techniques to optimize operations. The benefits of this stepwise application have been great. However, they have fallen short of the full potential offered by the prospect of overall plant optimization. The successful integration of computers, instrumentation and control software throughout a plant promises to deliver an additional 3% to 5% of productivity in even the best-run plants (Herbst and Bascur, 1984). LKAB is Europe's largest iron-ore producer and a leading implementer of advanced control technology. In the late 1980s, LKAB introduced advanced control in its concentrator at Kiruna, Sweden to improve plant performance through higher productivity, greater efficiency and lower costs at each processing step.

Soda ash production in the United States during 1994 increased 4%, reaching 9.3 Mt (10.2 million st). That was the second highest production year. Domestic nameplate soda ash capacity is about 11 Mt (12 million st). Overall, the industry operated at about 85% of capacity. Some companies produced at 100% of capacity while others produced at below their design ratings. Although domestic soda ash consumption was slow during the first half of the year, third- and fourth-quarter sales increased, especially in the flat¬glass and fiberglass sectors. These two sectors increased because of greater demand for glass products in the automotive and construction industries. Soda ash sold for pulp caustic soda increased during 1994. This was due to higher prices for and reduced availability of electrolytic caustic soda. It is often preferred for pulp digestion because of its stronger alkalinity.

INTRODUCTION Investigations of radon and radon daughter concentrations in Swedish [non-uranium] mines started in the late 1960's. The first screening measurements showed that the average annual exposure to radon and radon daughter products was 4.7 WLM. The main reason for high radon and radon daughter concentrations was inefficient ventilation and radonrich water entering the mine. In the radon regulations worked out later it was stated that no miner should be exposed to more than 60 000 pCi h/1 equilibrium equivalent concentration of radon annual exposure, corresponding to 3.6 WLM. Now, 1981 the situation has changed considerably. From the average annual exposure of 4.7 WLM in 1970 it is now only 0.7 WLM. Sweden has up to now had only one [uranium] mine and the work there has only been investigative. However, there are plans for a commercial uranium mine in another part of Sweden. The radon problems in these mines are widely different depending on the mineralogy. NON-URANIUM MINES The radiation problems in Swedish mines were not recognised until the late 60's. The first radon and radon daughter measurements were made in some sulphide ore mines in 1967 (1). The radon and radon daughter concentrations were surprisingly high for non-uranium mines. In order to have a complete picture of the radon situation in Swedish mines the National Institute of Radiation Protection (NIRP) decided to make measurements in all, at that time about 60 mines (2). To get results as fast as possible measurements on radon gas seemed most appropriate to start with. Sampling was made by mailing a number of evacuated 4.8 litre conventional propane containers from NIRP to each mine. The containers were then opened at the place of interest. After sampling the containers were sealed and then mailed back to the institute for measurement. The measurements were made in ionization chambers. This method only gave the radon concentration and the radon daughter concentration was estimated by multiplying the radon concentration by an assumed equilibrium factor. The equilibrium factor is defined as the ratio of the total potential alpha energy for the given daughter concentration to the total potential alpha energy of the daughters if they are in equilibrium with the given radon concentration. The results of this first preliminary survey indicated that a great many of the Swedish miners probably had an annual radon daughter exposure of more than 3.6 WLM. As the radiation exposure in non-uranium mines was not regulated in either the Swedish Radiation Protection Act or the Swedish Labour Protection Act work was started on special radon regulations. A lung cancer mortality study was also started. To check the results of the first survey and to get experience and knowledge of radon problems in mines, it was decided that personnel from the NIRP should visit each mine for a detailed investigation of radon and radon daughter concentrations starting with the ones with the highest radon concentrations. The main reasons for these so-called "basic measurements" were: 1. To estimate the doses received by Swedish miners 2. To find the sources of the high radon and radon daughter concentrations 3. To find appropriate counter-measures 4. To determine the most typical equilibrium factor for each mine. Unlike most uranium mines the reason for high radon concentrations in non-uranium mines is seldom the occurrence of highly radioactive minerals. The main sources were found to be waste-rock and radon-rich water. In order to filter and warm up the inlet air, especially in winter time, it was very common at that time to suck the air through broken wasterock. By doing so the air was contaminated with radon from the waste-rock and radon-rich water in it. It is noteworthy that the radium and uranium concentration in the waste-rock is relatively low. The uranium concentration is only of the order of 15 - 20 ppm. The action to prevent this contamination of the inlet air was to change the direction of the ventilation and in the case of radon-rich water entering the mine the action was to prevent the air coming into contact with the water. The first calculation of the radon daughter exposure of Swedish miners was based on radon gas measurements. The radon daughter concentration was estimated by using an assumed equilibrium factor of 0.5. Later when the mines were visited by institute staff it was possible to compare the assumed equilibrium factor with the measured ones. It was found that the factor varied from 0.15 at the air inlet to 1.0 at the air outlet and the average equilibrium factor on workplaces for almost all mines was between 0.4 and 0.6. The result of the exposure calculation in 1970 showed that more than 40 % of the miners had an annual radon daughter exposure of more than 3.6 WLM. In the mining, manufacturing and application of inorganic pigments, dispersion contributes significantly. This is especially true with mineral pigments because of the variety, in slurry operations required for their processing. Such operations include any of the following: (1) mine-transport (2) wet grinding (3) flotation/beneficiation (4) wet magnetic separation (5) selective floculation (6) size classification (7) chemical processing (8) spray drying Dosage levels and general economics of dispersant use are broadly variant, being dependant upon the agents employed, from the simplist, i.e., sodium silicate or sodium carbonate, to the more complex, as polyacrylates and organo-phosphates. In certain unit processes the dispersant must exhibit unusual chemical stability and persistence, e.g., in protracted pigment slurry shipments. In others, the agent should be fugitive to prevent secondary reactions from occurring, e.g., with high temperature calcination where alkali salts can act as aggregation fluxing agents.
