Introduction Since the Hardy Cross numerical algorithm was applied to the solution of mine ventilation networks, numerous developments have taken place in ventilation network analysis procedures. The Newton-Raphson method, the linear theory method and the second-order approximation method are three of the additional approaches that have been applied. The efficiency of a ventilation network analysis procedure depends not only on the method of solving the system of equations derived from ventilation networks but also on the method of deriving the equations through selection of the meshes. This paper investigates the impacts of three mesh selection methods on the efficiencies of four ventilation network procedures. The minimum-resistance spanning tree method is the most popular procedure for selecting meshes. The shortest-path method was suggested by Epp and Fowler (1970) for improvement of the Newton-Raphson method. The minimum-resistance-path method is suggested here as the third method of selecting meshes. The effects of these three methods on the Hardy Cross method, the Newton-Raphson method, the linear theory method and the second-order approximation method are analyzed in this paper. These network analysis methods have been summarized in the paper by Kim and Mutmansky (1991). Mesh selection methods A procedure for mine ventilation network solution based on mesh equations typically consists of two steps: • the mesh selection step and • the network solution step. The mesh selection step establishes a set of independent equations to solve the network. The resulting equations are nonlinear. One method of solving nonlinear equations is to linearize the equations and iteratively solve these linear equations. The four analysis methods previously discussed in this paper use this approach. The linear equations required for solution can be written in matrix form as: P•dQ = dF (1) where P is the pseudo-resistance matrix, Q is the quantity matrix, and F is the Jacobian matrix (Kim and Mutmansky, 1991). The efficiency of the solution method depends on the characteristics of the P matrix, which in turn depend on the method of selecting meshes. To understand the impacts of the mesh selection methods on the efficiency of the ventilation network analysis procedures, the characteristics of the P matrix must be understood first. The diagonal elements of the P matrix, m in number, are the sums of the pseudo-resistances of the branches contained in the m meshes necessary for solution. The off-diagonal elements are the sums of the pseudo-resistances of the branches shared by two meshes. For example, P12 (first row, second column element of the P matrix) is the sum of the pseudo-resistances of the branches common to mesh 1 and mesh 2. When solving the system of equations expressed in Eq. (1), three of the iterative procedures (the Newton-Raphson, the linear theory and the second-order approximation methods) use the direct factorization method (Burden and Faires, 1985) on the P matrix. When the direct factorization method is used, the computational efficiency is enhanced by larger diagonal elements and a sparser P matrix. Generally, the sparsity of the P matrix is more important than the size of the diagonal elements. There is no known mathematical method of predicting the efficiency of these procedures, but heuristic methods can be used to study the efficiency. The Hardy Cross algorithm applies the Gauss-Seidel method of splitting the P matrix and applies the Newton-Raphson procedure. The efficiency of the Hardy Cross method depends on the spectral radius of the matrix[[D-L]-1U], where D is the diagonal, L is the lower triangle and U is the upper triangle of the P matrix for the Newton-Raphson method (Ortega, 1972). The smaller the value of the spectral radius, the faster the convergence. As with the other three methods, larger diagonal elements and a sparser matrix aid in faster convergence. With the Hardy Cross method, however, the size of the diagonal elements is more important than the sparsity of the matrix. Remembering that each of the diagonal elements of the P matrix is the sum of the pseudo-resistances of the branches in a mesh and that each off-diagonal element is the sum of the pseudo-resistances of the branches shared by two different meshes, the following strategies can be used: • Avoid having branches with larger resistance values shared by multiple meshes. This increases the size of the diagonal elements and reduces the chance of off-diagonal elements being large.

1. INTRODUCTION Roadheaders have a shadowy origin - probably in Eastern Europe - but were introduced to Europe and the West by the importation of a Russian PK3 machine by the National Coal Board in 1961. A number of features rendered this type of machine an attractive tool for coal mine operators: its flexibility of operation, its combined cutting and loading ability, the opportunity it provided of making any shape of roadway, as well as its ability to cut some rocks. Encouraged and sponsored by the National Coal Board, the development of roadheaders was taken up in Great Britain, notably by Anderson Strathclyde and Dosco; in Europe, predominantly in numerical terms by Voest Alpine and Paurat. Over the 24 years since the importation of the first PK3, evolutionary development has taken place to the extent that machines are now available in many forms up to 120 tons in weight. Machine design has altered, partly as a result of increased power requirements and partly in line with the use of a ripping or a co-axial head. However, the basic concept remains: a boom containing a motor and transmission gear, with a driven cutting head at its extremity and capable of universal movement urged by hydraulic rams mounted on the boom turret and on the machine deck. Generally, the turret, hydraulic powerpack and all other necessary equipment are mounted on a chassis, which contains a discharge conveyor, the whole being carried on caterpillar tracks so that a complete machine entity is provided. Nast Tunnel is the first granitic rock tunnel to be excavated by a machine for the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation. The machine has excavated 7500 ft of the tunnel at this writing. There have been a few good performances; 31 ft in 1, 8 hr shift, and 75 ft in a 24 hr period, but generally, progress has been slower than that accomplished in the area with reasonable comparable conditions using conventional excavation techniques. Button cutters, now employed using compression as the means of fracturing the rock, gives an average cutting rate of 3 ft per hr. Disc cutters manufactured by the machine builders were tried briefly but the snap rings holding the discs to the hub failed. However, disc cutting rates of 6 ft per hr were recorded for short periods of time in a competent coarse grained porphyritic granite. The snuck was also considerably larger and more easily handled than that produced by the button cutters. Hughes Tool Co. is working on a disc type cutter and expects to have them on the cutterhead by mid June. LOCATION, DESCRIPTION AND BID OPENING Nast Tunnel is located 2 miles west of the Continental Divide and 39 miles east of the town of Basalt in Pitkin County, Colorado. The outlet portal is in the Fryingpan River Valley at an elevation of 10,000 ft. The tunnel is a 3 mile long, 10 ft diameter gravity flow water conveyance structure and a part of the west slope water collection for the Bureau of Reclamation, Fryingpan-Arkansas Project. "Refuge alternatives (RA) provide shelter to miners trapped underground during a disaster. RA manufacturers must demonstrate that their RAs meet the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements for oxygen supply, carbon dioxide removal, and the management of heat that results from the RA occupants and mechanical/chemical systems. In this study, miner size and activity level were used to determine the metabolic heat rate, oxygen requirements, and carbon dioxide generation that is representative of miners in a refuge situation. A convenience sample of 198 male miners was used for the distribution of current US coal miners, and the composite 95th percentile height and weight were determined to be 193 cm (76 in) and 133 kg (293 lb). The resting metabolic rate (RMR) was determined to be representative of activity level in an RA. The highest likely metabolic heat generation ranged from 115 W to 135 W, depending on RA occupancy. The highest required oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal were estimated to be 23 LO2/h/person (0.81 ft3/h/person) and 20 LCO2/h/person (0.71 ft3/h/person), which means the margin of safety is 50% or more when compared to the MSHA requirements. Manufacturers must demonstrate that their RAs meet Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements for the supply of oxygen, the removal of carbon dioxide, and the management of heat that results from the occupants and the mechanical/chemical systems in the RA [1]. These MSHA requirements were based on a standard 70 kg (168 lb) male with an assumed allocation of activity of 80% rest and 20% moderate activity level [2]. The purpose of this paper is to re-examine the metabolic heat generation and oxygen and carbon dioxide requirements of miners in an RA based on actual miner size and more realistic RA activity levels based on current RA designs. The purpose of this paper is to re-examine the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements for oxygen supply, carbon dioxide removal, and heat generation. To achieve this, researchers took the following steps to estimate the metabolic demands and the associated heat generation, oxygen requirements, and carbon dioxide production. 1. Characterized the anthropometric characteristics of the miner population. 2. Described the metabolic rate profile of RA occupants. 3. Characterized the maintenance demands of RAs. 4. Summarized oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal volumes. ANTHROPOMETRIC CHARACTERISTICS OF MINERS The weight, height, and age distributions of the adult male populations are summarized in Table 1. For each data set, the reported mean and standard deviation are provided. The 95th percentile (%ile) value for height and weight for each population was the mean plus 1.64 times the standard deviation."

The US economy grew steadily in 1989, reaching an annual rate of $5.3 trillion in the last quarter (US trillion=1012 ). The value of domestically processed, mineral-based materials rose 5% to $315 billion (US billion=109). The value of metals produced from US ores rose 14% to $11.6 billion, while industrial minerals rose 2% to $20.2 billion. Recycled scrap was valued at $10 billion. Increasing economic activity stimulated metal prices. Yearly lows and highs were $2.31 and $3.56/kg ($1.05 and $1.62 per lb) for copper, $1.58 and $2.57/kg (72 and $1.17 per lb) for aluminum, 77 and 97 cents/kg (35 cents and 44 cents per lb) for lead, and $1.58 and $2.09/kg (72 cents and 95 cents per lb) for zinc. Many mining and metal companies reported reasonable profits. Consumer demand strongly affects mining because the US economy is saturated with long-lived products. Consumer, mortgage, and Federal debt continued to rise. 250 million US citizens already possess 172 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. New car production fell 4% to 6.8 million units, while truck and bus production fell 1 % to four million units. New housing starts fell 9% to 1.4 million units. Imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important mineral materials. Imports of crude and refined petroleum costing $50 billion exceeded domestic crude oil production. President Bush expressed "strong concerns about this country becoming further dependent on foreign oil." And the Department of Energy held a series of hearings around the country to develop ideas for a "national energy strategy."

The use of low-angle forward light scattering for measurement of particle size distribution has been described previously.1 Laboratory instrumentation using this technology is used routinely in operating plants for quality control and production control.2,3 Extension of the technique to on-line process monitoring and control has also been undertaken in several important areas. This paper will discuss the application of MICROTRAC R systems to the monitoring of particle size in wet slurry processes and dry powder grinding circuits. Examples of existing installations will be given with emphasis on performance and on-line reliability.

The INRED process has been developed step by step by Boliden since 1972 at MEFOS, the Foundation for Metallurgical Research, at Lulea in Sweden. The demonstration - plant is number five in this series. The purpose of this plant, which has a nominal capacity of 60,000 tonnes per year of hot metal is to: 1) prove the process on a sufficiently large scale to provide the basis for construction of production plants, 2) test various kinds of raw materials on behalf of licensees, 3) train operators of the first production plant, 4) develop the process further for special applications.

The fundamental characteristics of ultrafine chalcopyrite flotation were investigated by the Bureau of Mines to establish techniques to improve recovery of ultrafine chalcopyrite. Intense agitation during conditioning was found to improve flotation recovery of the ultrafine chalcopyrite. A split-circuit flotation design, treating the plus 38-µm-size ore by the conventional method and treating the minus 38-µm-size ore with intense agitation conditioning followed by flotation, recovered 95.6 pct of the copper in a 28.3-pct-copper concentrate, This was a 5-pct increase in copper recovery over the conventional chalcopyrite flotation method.

Conventional logging tools such as density, neutron, and acoustic have ranges of investigation of tens of centimeters. The borehole gravimeter, however, has a range up to hundreds of meters. For example, from the center of a cylindrical orebody 0.22 g/cm3 denser than its surroundings, one can detect the boundary of the orebody at a radius as large as five times its height. More complex structures can be investigated with computer programs. We can predict the usefulness of proposed gravity surveys, or decide which suggested structure is most likely to have caused the results of existing surveys.

Microbial leaching is being investigated as a method for recovering the metal values from a domestic low-grade manganese wad ore. Early work showed that heterotrophic microorganisms present in the ore solubilized manganese when cultured in a glucose-mineral salts medium. More recent shake-flask tests using molasses as the sole nutrient source extracted 97 pct of the manganese from minus 300- µm ore in 4 weeks. Column bioleaching with the molasses medium solubilized 99 pct of the manganese from minus 6.3-mm ore in 50 weeks. The results of flask, column, and lab-scale heap bioleaching studies are presented.

Controlled release systems delivering the required concentration of an effective bactericide over an extended time period have been developed by The BFGoodrich Company's ProMac® Systems group. The ProMac system is site-specific and includes a four-step approach to controlling acid mine drainage (AMD): (1) Diagnosing the problem, (2) Prescribing the treatment, (3) Supervising the application of controlled release bactericides, and (4) Honitoring the success of applied treatment. The success of the ProMac system is evidenced by improved water quality, healthy vegetation, a reduction in levels of acidophilic thiobacillus, and a corresponding increase in population of beneficial microorganisms.

Sampling of respirable dust and analyses of samples have been partially completed for a longwall panel. Physical and compositional properties which have been characterized include: 1. Respirable mass concentration, 2. Mineral composition, 3. Particle size distribution by mineral, 4. Particle shape distribution by mineral, 5. Particle angularity distribution by mineral, and 6. Respirable size distribution. Analytical techniques used in the characterization of samples are described, and results are reported with emphasis placed on relationships between the various characteristics and worker locations. Details of existing mining conditions, equipment arrangements, dust control methods and operating system parameters are presented.

Cumulophyric feldspars, of varying morphology, carry myrmekitic quartz interstitially between microperthitic feldspar lamellae. The size, coarseness, and morphology of these crystals, together with concordant foliation features constitutes evidence that they are a product of primary crystallization, formed prior to eruption from a vent. These crystals occur preferentially along 2 - 5 mm thick tan, vesicular to compressed alteration bands intercalated with more densely welded light grey bands. In perlite with quartz at or below a 0.1% threshold, megascopic feldspars are less than 1%. Perlite with quartz above this level has megascopic feldspar concentrations >3%, typically in the 5-20% range.

The solvent extraction process as it applies to the recovery of metals from solutions on a comnercial basis is described. The four types of classes of sol vent extraction reagents are explained: 1) solvation, 2) acidic, 3) ion-pair, and 4) chelation, and examples of each type of reagent system are given. The uranium and copper extraction examples, using the ion-pair and the chelate reagent types respectively, are presented in greater detail to illustrate the more subtle aspects of reagent evaluation and selection. Practical experiences in the laboratory and at some operating plants are a1 so discussed.

The historic Getchell property is currently being mined from the Getchell Main Underground workings, a foot wall extension of the Getchell open pit deposits along the Getchell fault. Drift-and-fill techniques are used to extract the ore through a ramp access. The adjacent Turquoise Ridge deposit is currently under development via two vertical shafts. Together, the two mines will continue to provide feed to the Getchell's 3,200 tpd mill/autoclave circuit, taking Getchell Gold from its current production rate of 200,000 ounces (Au) per annum, to over 400,000 ounces (Au) per annum by 1999.

An elastic-viscoplastic material model allows for time- dependent rock mass motion in proportion to excess stress above the elastic limit. The model produces rounded stair-step curves of displacement vs. time that are similar to those obtained from recent borehole extensometer measurements made in the central portion of the Ross Shaft pillar at the Homestake mine. The work in progress, including two- and three-dimensional finite element analyses using the UTAH2/3 codes, indicates that the model is a step towards more realistic safety and stability analysis, but that inclusion of rock mass damage may be desirable.

Dewatering wells producing iron-rich water experience rapid declines in yield and drawdown due to the formation of ferric (Fe3+) hydroxide deposits in well screens, pump intakes and riser pipes. Precipitation is caused by a combination of dewatering-promoted iron oxidation and iron oxidizing bacteria. Physical and chemical well rehabilitation techniques, as well as alternative well-construction and well development techniques, were evaluated in this study. The addition of acid downhole feed systems to dewatering wells that are prone to iron encrustation can, in many cases, prolong their operational lives up to 500% that of unacidified wells.

The industrial Source Complex (ISC3) model is the accepted standard used to predict emissions of particulate matter less tan 10µm in diameter (PM10) from industrial operations. This model, however, over-predicts PM10 emissions from surface mining operations, making permits harder to obtain. The over-prediction is likely due to the fact that the model applies emissions from mobile (dynamic) sources to stationary (static) areas. Utilizing a Gaussian dispersion equation, a Dynamic Component Program was created to correct the over-prediction of the model and results in a much more realistic modeling of actual conditions from mobile sources.

In the Spring of 1991, Georgia Marble Company of Arizona (GMCOA), acquired the Andrada Marble Company located near Vail, Arizona, approximately 32 km southeast of Tucson. The Georgia Marble Company operation consists of an open pit quarry and a recently constructed, state of the art calcium carbonate milling and processing facility. The open pit quarry exposes white, crystalline, CaCO3, Escabrosa limestone that meets our customer criteria for Consumer and Industrial Filler applications. The Georgia Marble Company Arizona Division facility is designed and engineered to produce a wide range of milled calcium carbonate that includes finely ground and coarse screened products.

The electrochemical behavior of a zinc sulfide concentrate during the microbiological leaching was investigated using ZnS-carbon paste electrodes and a cyclic voltametric technique. The effects of Zn2 [ ] , Fe2+, Fe3+ and Cu2+ on the cathodic and anodic currents associated with zinc sulfide leaching in presence and absence of microorganisms, were assessed. The semiconductor nature of zinc sulfide was discussed in terms of ability of microorganisms to obtain their metabolic energy (through removal of electrons) from this high energy gap substrate. The intermediate electrochemical reactions involved in the ZnS leaching were described.
