The long hole open stoping (LHOS) method is widely used in underground mining. While methods to predict stable stope geometries are well established, the ability to maintain a stable back often assumes effective ground support across the full stope span. The efficacy of the support strategy is dependent on rock jointing, quality, density, top cut width and height, and the type, amount, and orientations of bolts installed. However, it is becoming increasingly common for operators to assume narrow top cuts in service of wider stope spans with minimal bolting coverage. Failure to account for the required top cut drift size and support requirements can ultimately lead to raveling type instabilities along stope shoulders that result in back collapse. A new method has been developed to evaluate the minimum top cut dimension necessary to accommodate wider stope spans with various rock bolting configurations. Due to the economic impacts of top cut development and support, this is a critical consideration in the accurate costing and scheduling of a LHOS operation. Tables 1 lists the acronyms are used throughout this paper.

In August 2011, the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) contacted mining institutes and related societies internationally to assess their interest in participating in coordination of the review of the South African Code for Mineral Valuation (SAMVAL) with reviews of other mineral valuation standards. The main mineral valuation standards are the CIMVal Standard of The Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM), the VALMIN Code of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM), the SAMVAL Code, and the extractive industries? guidance note of the International Valuation Standards Council (IVSC), Valuation of Properties in the Extractive Industries, GN 14, designed for application within the full set of International Valuation Standards (IVSs). By January 2012, SAIMM had concluded that the level of respondent interest was adequate to organize a meeting. A meeting was scheduled for April 18, 2012 in Brisbane, Australia in conjunction with a VALMIN mineral valuation conference organized by the AusIMM. The stated purpose of the meeting was to develop an accord on terms of reference for pursuing harmonization of mineral asset valuation standards adopted by the participating mineral institutes. SME decided that, although it has not developed its own mineral valuation standard, it should participate in the Brisbane meeting and the harmonization process, as also did the American Institute of Minerals Appraisers (AIMA).

"Despite the difficult economic climate for the mining industry, more than 6,300 people joined SME for its 2016 Annual Conference & Expo in Phoenix, AZ, Feb. 21-24.Nearly every commodity has been bruised and battered during the past year, leading to one of the more difficult cycles for the industry in the past decade. Coal has taken some of the hardest hits and other commodities, such as copper and iron ore, have felt the sting of a slower growth in China and an oversupply on the market.The difficult conditions could not be ignored, but they did not deter SME from offering a forum for the industry to share knowledge, network with peers and learn about the best products and practices while visiting the sold-out exhibit hall (844 booths and 627 vendors) or while attending any of the 121 technical sessions that were offered.The current state of the industry was one of the overriding themes of the conference and during the challenging times there are often cutbacks as operations look to become leaner and more efficient, however, there is one area that cannot be cut – health and safety.The conference kicked off with a fascinating presentation from Colonel Mike Mullane, a former NASA astronaut who, in 1978, was selected as a Mission Specialist Astronaut in the first group of space shuttle astronauts. He completed three space missions and logged 356 hours in space aboard the shuttles Discovery and Atlantis before retiring from NASA and the U.S. Air Force in 1990.In his speech to a packed audience, he warned of the dangers of cutting corners to get the job done more quickly by guarding against the “normalization of deviance.”Normalization of deviance is a long-term phenomenon in which individuals or teams repeatedly accept a lower standard of performance until that lower standard becomes the norm. Usually, the acceptance of the lower standard occurs because the individual or team is under pressure (budget, schedule, etc.) and perceives it will be too difficult to adhere to the original higher standard. Their intention may be to revert back to the higher standard when this period of pressure passes. However, by getting away with the deviation from the higher standard, it is likely they will do the same thing when the same stressful circumstances arise again. Over time, the individual/team fails to see their actions as deviant."

A technique was developed to determine the fraction of air recirculated from the scrubber exhaust toward the face and the fraction of gas captured by the scrubber. To determine these two values, a series of tests was required. In the first test, gas was released at the face area and concentrations measured at the scrubber exhaust. In the second test, gas was released directly into the scrubber with concentrations again measured in the scrubber exhaust. The simultaneous solution of two independent flow expressions gave values of recirculation and scrubber capture. A series of tests was conducted with various combinations of scrubber flow, curtain flow, setback distance, and machine location. Statistical analyses then were conducted to determine those factors which influenced the levels of scrubber recirculation and scrubber capture in a deep cut. INTRODUCTION As cutting depths increase, the trend is toward the use of blowing face ventilation systems. With these ventilation systems, the potential exists for recirculation between the scrubber exhaust and the intake air stream. One concern is that methane gas, having been removed from the face area, is subsequently recirculated back into the intake airflow. Under these conditions, methane-laden air could be substituted for fresh intake air, leading to increased methane concentrations at the face. There is currently no standard for recirculation between the scrubber and intake airflows. The implied understanding of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is, and has always been, that any recirculation of ventilation air is unacceptable. To minimize recirculation potential, MSHA suggests that operators maintain scrubber and curtain flows within 0.47 m3/sec (1000 cfm) of each other. Given that recirculation may occur in some circumstances, the question arises as to how much recirculation constitutes a hazard for the face workers. Unfortunately, there is currently insufficient information to answer this. Emphasis must instead be placed on means to quantify the amount of recirculation between the scrubber and face area. Methods must also be examined to control this phenomenon. This paper presents a technique for quantifying recirculation and scrubber capture levels in a blowing face ventilation system. Several ventilation parameters are investigated to determine their effects on these levels. DEVELOPMENT OF RECIRCULATION EXPRESSIONS One way to measure airflow quantities at a point near the face would be to measure the gas flow rate Qgas, and gas concentration c at that location. The airflow Qair, would be simply the ratio of these two values, Qair, = Qgas/c. Although gas concentration values, c, can be obtained easily with existing gas monitoring equipment, it is more difficult to obtain gas flow readings, Qgas, at specific locations. To obtain these values of Qgas, another method was needed. Previous work in this area was conducted by Kissell and Bielicki (1975). However, the calculations in their model assumed a constant gas concentration in the region around the continuous miner. In a deep cut, it is questionable that gas concentrations would remain constant or uniform around the mining machine. The technique presented here does not rely on this assumption. It instead assumes that the gas concentration in the scrubber exhaust remains constant. A quantity of gas released at the cutting face either flows into the scrubber inlets or bypasses the inlets and flows around the off-curtain side (in this example, the right side) of the continuous miner (Figure 1). "When most people think “miner,” they picture an older white man in a dusty shirt and suspenders. He’s holding a gas lamp and a pickaxe, peering at the walls of a dimly lit cavern. This image, while steeped in heritage, is no longer representative of what mining is: a global, increasingly diverse industry.It’s an industry made up of individuals like Zambian-born Chushi Mwewa, PE, president of Southlands Engineering, LLC in the United States and managing director of Southlands Engineering Limited in Zambia; Navajo tribe member Peter Denetclaw, manager of environmental programs and Navajo relations at Freeport-McMoRan; and Chinese and Jewish Alyssa Hom, a project engineer at McCarthy Building Companies.According to the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economics, 168 out of the world’s 195 recognized countries have some mining or mineral resources activity, and the mining industry directly employs more than 25 million people across the globe.However, according to McKinsey & Company’s 2017 “Women in the Workplace” study, white males hold 67 percent of C-Suite positions and 70 percent of senior vice president positions in the corporate world, and mining is no different. This uniformity among leadership has been tied to lower levels of employee engagement, innovation and business growth. The bottom line is this: Diversity is good for business. The question industry leaders must now ask themselves is not “Will we promote diversity?” but “How will we promote diversity efficiently and permanently?”More than 80 industry professionals, consultants and students gathered to discuss this question and share stories at the “Developing Diversity in Mining” workshop organized by the University of Arizona’s Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources (IMR), held during the 2017 SME Arizona Conference in December 2017.Brad Ross, co-director of the IMR and one of the facilitators of the workshop, said he felt diversity was important to discuss because he has witnessed its benefits throughout his career in the mining industry.“By creating a team of people with different experiences and perspectives, a company is better equipped to see the big picture and to creatively tackle problems,” he said. Speakers from industry and academia,including Mwewa, Denetclaw and Hom discussed the challenges surrounding achieving diversity and inclusion as well as the roles and responsibilities of different stakeholders."

The requirement for a paradigm shift with regard to materials movement in search of low-cost production has not just happened by chance but, rather, has been driven by agents of change that include mining companies, consultants, governments and equipment suppliers. During the past 100 years of mining, surface mining technology has involved humans with hand tools, humans with machinery and unmanned automated equipment. In the past 50 years, surface mining technology has evolved and now takes the form of trucks and loaders (TL), in-pit-crushing conveying (IPCC) and autonomous haulage equipment (AHS).

Bright-orange couplings adorning piping systems are a common sight in just about every underground mine in North America. Grooved mechanical piping, the pipe-joining system that utilizes these couplings, is the preferred method for joining underground and plant piping systems in the mining industry, due to the ease and speed of installation and maintenance. However, the applications for such systems have traditionally excluded high-pressure systems. Most grooved mechanical couplings have a moderate working-pressure limitation, so high-pressure systems have required the use of alternative joining methods, typically heavy-duty flanges. However, the introduction of high-pressure couplings (up to 4,000 psi) has made the grooved joining method viable, and even preferable, for backfill, deep-mine chilled water and dewatering lines and other high-pressure piping applications. As engineers explore the use of high-pressure couplings, questions will undoubtedly arise about the joining method?s capabilities. This article will address the capabilities and specifications of high-pressure couplings, and compare flanged and grooved mechanical pipe joining in traditional as well as high-pressure underground mining applications.

"In the global mining industry, there are those who seem resigned to the fact that the mining industry has always operated according to certain time-tested principles that don’t involve jumping on every new technological trend. Others expect that mines will soon have autonomous electric vehicles running around the clock. The truth lies somewhere in the middle. In business, as in life, that is usually the best path to follow.The instant access to people and information provided by 21st-century technology continues to push businesses in all industries toward greater efficiency and unheard-of levels of modernization. And in the world of mining, the embrace of advanced technology is all about managing risk.However, even in this age of digital information overload, some mine sites still require employees to physically download data from individual trucks to monitor payload data and inspect road conditions using a clipboard. What’s more baffling is that other mine sites still have no way of tracking tons moved at all.This isn’t due to a lack of innovation in the industry. Quite to the contrary, there is an abundance of new technology available that provides real-time monitoring of vehicle movements and tracks road conditions without the intervention of people. So why are owners reluctant to embrace advances in mining tech?Gauging the value of changeSurvey data has traditionally been captured by ground laser scans and LIDAR systems. A mine site surveyor would drive around the pit with a truck-mounted scanner to generate a point cloud. This process would be completed every few days and would take an entire day.The many cons of this method far outweigh the pros. First, it provides no visual data. If an operation has moved beyond the roller wheel and tape measure, visual pit models and LIDAR scans are typically completed once every six to 12 months by an aerial flyover, but such sporadic information gathering isn’t likely to result in the most actionable data. Moreover, given the high cost (in terms of both money and time), the numerous safety and liability issues, and the lack of flexibility in scheduling, manual processes are more trouble than they are worth.Overall, while miners are excellent operators who value innovation, their employers often try to outsource it or acquire innovators instead of investing in existing technology that can improve current operations. The mining and minerals extraction industries have often been demonized by the public as industries that put profits and production before people. It is true that the inherent danger of the work has led to more fatal accidents than anyone associated with the industry would care to remember. But, in stark contrast to what has often been said, the truth of the matter is safety is now the top priority of every miner, from the face of the longwall to the executive boardroom. Without safety, nothing else matters. This message was told and retold by representatives from some of the world?s top mining and petroleum companies from Oct. 11-13 during the inaugural Safety and Reliability in the Mining and Resources Industries Conference in Calgary, Canada. The meeting was hosted jointly by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME). It was the first of a series of conferences to focus on these important topics. Next year, the conference will be held in Minneapolis, MN from Nov. 13-15.

Effective management of ore loss and dilution is essential for successful grade control and short-term mine planning due to their significant impact on the economic, environmental and technical aspects of openpit mining operations. Factors influencing ore loss and dilution fall into two categories: (1) controllable factors, like mine equipment selectivity and blast design, and (2) uncontrollable factors, such as spatial heterogeneity of ore and waste blocks on a bench. This paper focuses on the second category by applying spatial entropy concept to capture heterogeneity at the scale of selective mining units. In this paper, global spatial entropy is used to assess the impact of spatial heterogeneity between ore and waste blocks on the magnitude of ore loss and dilution, while the local spatial entropy can guide the allocation of blast movement monitoring balls preblast. High values of the global spatial entropy indicate increasing potential of ore loss and dilution, which reduce profit. Furthermore, through a number of case studies, the study investigates the relationship between spatial entropy, cutoff grades, blast movement, dig-limits optimization model running time, and profit. The results show that changes in cutoff grade and blast movement can significantly affect spatial entropy post-blasting and increase ore loss, dilution and profit reduction, revealing the need for controlled blasting at specific bench sections. Additionally, the results demonstrate an exponential increase in profit reduction due to ore loss and dilution with a rising global spatial entropy

"Atmospheric monitoring systems (AMS) have been widely used in underground coal mines in the U.S. for the detection of fire in the belt entry and monitoring of other ventilation-related parameters such as airflow velocity and methane concentration in specific mine locations. In addition to an AMS being able to detect a mine fire, the AMS data has the potential to provide fire characteristic information such as fire growth (heat release rate) and exact fire location. This information is critical in making decisions regarding fire-fighting strategies, underground personnel evacuation, and optimal escape routes. In this study, a methodology was developed to calculate the fire heat release rate using AMS sensor data for carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), and airflow velocity based on the theory of heat and species transfer in ventilation airflow. Full-scale mine fire experiments were then conducted in the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) Safety Research Coal Mine using an AMS with different fire sources. Sensor data collected from the experiments were used to calculate the heat release rates of the fires using this methodology. The calculated heat release rate was compared with the value determined from the mass loss rate of the combustible material using a digital load cell. The experimental results show that the heat release rate of a mine fire can be calculated using AMS sensor data with reasonable accuracy. INTRODUCTION Fires at different stages generate different gases and smoke toxicity hazards. When fires occur in underground mines, a significant amount of toxic gases and smoke enter the mine ventilation system and are carried throughout the mine ventilation network, increasing the hazard potential for personnel even if far away from the actual fire. Although fires that develop to the point of rapid flame spread pose imminent hazards, fires in their smoldering, pre-flaming stages can also contaminate the mine atmosphere with debilitating levels of smoke and toxic gases. The most important parameter for evaluating the fire hazard in mines is the heat release rate (HRR), which is directly related to the rate at which heat, smoke, and toxic gases are produced and transported by the ventilation system, and provides an indication of the time available for escape or firefighting [1]. The HRR is also an important input parameter to mine fire simulation models. Measuring the HRR of an actual fire can be a difficult task. Early experimental measurement of HRR focused on the heat output as represented by the temperature of the product gases. In ASTM E1321 (LIFT test), an array of thermocouples was positioned in a duct which captured all gaseous combustion products to measure their average temperature. This approach assumed the flow is adiabatic, which is never a reality. Significant progress on measuring HRR was made when Huggett showed that, for most common materials containing C, H, O, and N, the average heat release per unit mass of oxygen is 13.1 MJ/kg O2 [2]. Thus, the oxygen deficit is a measure of the HRR in the flow that the duct captures. This approach is termed oxygen consumption calorimetry (or the oxygen consumption method), and is widely used in the fire protection community."

Soft ground tunneling poses major challenges to the underground industry. Most of soft ground tunnels are in highly urbanized areas, often include limited cover, and include a strong trend of increasing diameters. Therefore, soft ground tunneling works can sometimes cause inevitable ground movements and settlements that may lead to damages to adjacent buildings, roads, structures or utilities; many of these being “lifeline” infrastructure assets. Tunneling operations, Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) advance rates, and face pressure control can significantly increase or decrease such risks, depending on how well the TBM and operational parameters are applied to the ground conditions. Additionally, the risks of impacting existing infrastructure are heightened in many parts of North America because of cobbles and boulders. To date there is no standardized guideline that determines appropriate tunneling rates nor operator’s guidelines, to ensure safe tunnelling in soft ground. The paper analyzes tunneling records from completed soft ground tunnels to determine a relation between ground conditions, tunnel cover, TBM cutters maintenance and TBM advance rates. The records are discussed to draw several mitigation measures to be adopted during tunnelling, to reduce risks of settlements, over excavation or sinkholes.

"Managing slurry is a constant challenge for mining operations. Since slurries are not uniform, the challenge is complicated by varying rheology, velocity, temperature and pressure, all of which affect how the slurry moves through the pipeline and how destructive it is to the system it is flowing through. Picking the right equipment from the outset — the right size pipe, the right size pump and the proper valves for the application — allows mines to operate more efficiently. Better valve designs deliver multiple benefits — they can lower the cost of operations, reduce the amount of maintenance and associated downtime required and are better for the environment. Historically, modulating systems have used ball, plug and pinch valves to manage the flow of slurry, but each of these alternatives has limitations. Ball valves require ceramic lining in order to delay wear, and once a ball valve does wear, the entire valve must be replaced. Similarly, plugs in plug valves should be coated to perform in control systems, and whole valves must be swapped out upon wear. Pinch valves are expensive and only require replacement of the sleeve. However, sleeve replacement involves an extremely arduous process in which the valve is completely taken apart.Traditionally, designers have avoided using knife gate valves (KGV) in modulating systems because KGVs have not been able to hold up under the harsh operating conditions. The throttling that is required in some of these processes rapidly fatigues conventional KGVs, rendering them useless and in need of replacement. Fortunately, innovative design changes have the potential to change established views.Breaking new groundRecognizing the need for improved components, Victaulic took on the challenge of designing a valve that could withstand abrasive slurry systems for a much longer period of time. The first step in this process was to talk to miners, maintenance personnel, process engineers and operators in the field about the limitations of current offerings and then determine design specifications for an ideal replacement.Many of the responses to these inquiries were very similar and reflected challenges with current operations; the primary objective was to find a valve that would be lighter and cheaper than the valves currently in use. In theory, a lighter valve would be easier to replace, and since replacements need to be performed frequently, a cheaper valve seemed like the right idea."

To adequately attack the longwall dust problem, the US Bureau of Mines funded a contract to define dust sources on a longwall mine face area. The study examined the shearer during sumping, cutting, and tramming, the conveyor, and the roof supports. Tests showed the shearer to be the major dust source. Introduction Long-term illnesses place a heavy burden on miners, the mining industry, and taxpayers. Black lung payments to more than 400,000 miners and their survivors exceeded $9 billion between 1970 and 1980. They are continuing at a rate of $1 billion per year. Recent MSHA data indicate more than 50% of the longwall faces are still out of compliance with the 2 mg/m3 (0.00007 oz per cu ft) respirable dust regulation. Allowable dust limits are often further reduced owing to the presence of silica dust. This substantially increases the problem's severity. Research in the 1970s showed that by modifying the mining method through changing drum-type mining machines from high rpm shallow cutting to slow rpm deep cutting, both specific dust and energy could be reduced (Black et al., 1978; Ludlow and Wilson, 1982; Roepke, Lindroth, and Myren, 1976). The coal mining industry is using more longwall equipment to economically obtain high productivity. This high production rate, however, makes it difficult for longwalls to meet the legal dust standard. Research is showing how both these concerns may be addressed at the mining face. Results reported here explain the relationship of various major elements of the longwall system to dust generation on the longwall face. This paper is based on work completed by Foster-Miller Associates Inc. Objectives were to differentiate dust sources on the longwall face and to quantify dust levels for various elements of the shearer drum. The work was accomplished in two phases. Jonathon Ludlow, project engineer for FMA, developed and performed the necessary testing (Ludlow and Marshall, 1983). Bradley, Hadden, and Weston (1983) have done evaluations on British coal mines that produced similar results to those reported here. They found causative rela¬tionships between haulage speed, production, depth cut, drum speed, and dust generation. They also found that roof support movement increased the dustiness, whereas this work indicated that support movement had only a minor effect on total dust exposure. Both of these results are valid when the variation of mining conditions is analyzed. British mines are deeper than US mines. Therefore, roof rocks and coal are more fragmented than in the shallower US mines. Other reasons for the dust differences include the weaker shales found in Britain and the variation of roof support equipment designs between the UK and the US. Four mines in this report had rock roofs and, thus, would be less dusty. The fifth longwall mine had a coal roof, but the large cross-sectional area and high air velocity minimized dust exposure. Mines and Equipment Five underground longwall mine sites were tested (Fig. 1). All were using double-ended ranging-drum shearers (derds) with some variations in equipment. The mines and equipment details are shown in Table 1. No modification of mining equipment or operating cycles was made during the first phase of testing. The mining process observed followed the normal mine operating procedures. Three GCA RAM-1 respirable dust monitors and two vortex anemometers with cycle notations on portable tape recorders were used in each face area. The start and end of each cycle segment were recorded. The paper’s intent is to evaluate pumpable foamed cementitious mine seal material by determining the shear strength of a generic foamed cement in the laboratory. The tests were conducted on three scales: small-size specimens, consisting of cylinders 4 in. in diameter or 3-in. prisms; double shear medium- size specimens, measuring 13 in. by 10 in.; and large-size specimens, measuring 6 ft by 4 ft by 4 ft. The small-specimen shear tests resulted in average peak and residual shear strengths of 128 psi and 56 psi, respectively. These values are fairly consistent with published shear strengths of foamed cementitious material. However, the other two types of shear tests did not achieve the shear strength of a typical pumpable foamed cementitous mine seal material. Based on the test results, the paper concluded that the structural analysis of cement foam seals should be based on their residual shear strengths, approximately 20 psi, determined from small laboratory-scale tests of the cement foam/concrete or rock interface, and not be based on their peak strengths.

The recession that began in late 1980 has proved to be not only prolonged and severe, but in certain ways unique in its effect on the mineral industries among the periods of economic slowdown experienced in the Western world since the end of World War II. This time almost all minerals have been affected. In previous business turndowns, by contrast, some mineral sectors have with-stood economic adversity well. They experienced little or no adverse effect-thanks either to a strong secular expansion in the markets for their particular product or to specific factors that caused demand to be well maintained. For example, aluminum, molybdenum, and nickel are three metals that enjoyed extraordinary growth in applications during the years 1946-1973. These metals were little affected during the recessions that occurred in that era. Similarly, coal did not suffer a pronounced drop in sales in the 1974-75 turndown because, with the price of oil rising sharply, a switch away from oil and back to coal was clearly indicated for some energy-intensive applications. Oil itself was largely impervious to the ups and downs of the business cycle until very recently. And the precious metals, gold and silver, have often been regarded as benefiting from reduced economic activity because labor becomes more available, productivity rises, and operating costs diminish. In the current recession, however, no major mineral has escaped the broad trend. The secular growth factors that were previously so evident for aluminum, molybdenum, and nickel have disappeared, at least temporarily. The stable pricing behavior that previously characterized all three of these commodities has been replaced by extreme price weakness and apparent inability of the major producers to continue their roles as market leaders. Coal and oil both have suffered from a sharp drop in energy requirements. There are those who now anticipate a collapse of the market control over oil prices so clearly exercised by OPEC since 1973. If oil prices are no longer effectively controlled by the governments of the exporting countries, then coal prices are also certain to be affected. And the combination of high interest rates, tight money, and a change in public perceptions of precious metals put the skid under gold and silver quotations in 1981 and early 1982. Although inflation has been viewed as the scourge of most Western countries ever since the oil crises of 1973-74, prices-in constant dollars-of most minerals have not risen. On the contrary, with the exception of the precious metals and oil, for most minerals the prices that prevailed at the end of 1982 were close to the levels of the Great Depression of the 1930s in constant dollar terms. Table 1 compares prices for copper, lead, zinc, and aluminum at the end of 1982 with the average prices in 1934, stated in constant 1967 dollars. This emphasis on prices for mineral commodities reflects the fact that profits of mining enterprises vary directly with the level of prices. Manufacturing and retailing enterprises march to a different tune. They establish sales prices based on costs. Their profits tend to vary with volume. Commodities are for all practical purposes fungible, that is the advantages of known brands in marketing manufactured goods have little application in a commodity market. Thus the individual seller of minerals is unable to establish his sales prices. Except where a monopoly is present, he must sell at the going market. His option is to abstain from selling if he finds the price unremunerative. In past recessions, some mineral producers chose to do precisely that-either accumulating a substantial share of their output in inventory or, in prolonged downturns, abstaining from production. During the current recession, however, private-sector mining companies did not have the option of accumulating inventories to any great extent. Capital costs for new mineral projects or for expansion of existing facilities have escalated at an alarming rate since the early 1970s. Added to this has been the heavy cost of installing pollution control or safety equipment to comply with the regulations adopted in most industrialized countries (and particularly the United States) since 1968. The consequence has been that the financial position of most major mineral enterprises in mid-1980 was already strained. To finance increased inventories meant incurring additional funded debt at high interest costs, thus impairing the concern's credit rating. Management Choices Private-sector managements have had to face up to the alternative of either continuing to produce at an unchanged rate and marketing output at unremunerative prices or reducing output. Overview Coal production in the first half of 1982 remained near the high levels begun in mid-1981. Production then fell sharply during the latter part of the year due to recession-weakened demand. Even so, 1982 coal production was estimated at 756 Mt (833.4 million st), a record high that exceeded 1980's previous production record of 752.7 Mt (829.7 million st). Though 1982 coal production was substantially below industry expectations, the attained production represented a modest achievement in view of the recession's severity. In 1982, the gross national product declined 1.8%, its worst performance in 36 years. The recession, along with mild weather, improved energy efficiency, and conservation efforts caused the nation's energy use to drop 4.1%. With the iron and steel, construction, and auto industries experiencing production declines, industrial energy use fell 10.8%. The extent to which the nation's economic slump affected coal markets in 1982 varied: • total domestic coal use declined 3.4%; • exports remained strong for most of the year; • electric utility coal use declined for the first time in 25 years; • coal use at coke plants declined by one-third; and • coal use in other industrial sectors stayed surprisingly near the 1981 level. Coal Use Domestic coal use totaled 641.8 Mt (707.5 million st) in 1982,22 .9 Mt (25.2 million st) below the 1981 level. Nearly all the decline occurred at coke plants where use dropped to 37.1 Mt (40.9 million st) in 1982 from 55.3 Mt (61 million st) in 1981. The decline in all other industrial and electric utility coal markets was only 5.3 Mt (5.8 million st). Residential and commercial coal use increased 635 kt (700,000 st) to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) from 6.7 Mt (7.4 million st). Power generation decreased 2.3% in 1982, the first year since 1945 that output failed to increase. The decline was due to a drop in industrial demand. Electricity sales to residential, commercial, and other nonindustrial users increased slightly. But coal's competitive position stayed strong. Power generation from oil and natural gas fell 28.9% and 11.7%, respectively. Power generation from coal declined only 0.9%. Among the primary energy sources, coal fueled 53.2% of US electric power generated in 1982, compared with 52.4% in 1981. In 1982, US steel production declined to 66.1 Mt (72.9 million st), the lowest level in 50 years and down from 109.6 Mt (120.8 million st) in 1981. The reduced steel demand forced 13 coke plants to shut down. Coal Exports Coal exports in 1982 totaled 96.4 Mt (106.3 million st), 5.7 Mt (6.3 million st) less than in 1981. Despite the worldwide recession and above normal coal stockpiles in many countries, exports were higher than many expected. This showed the relatively strong US position in international coal trade. The US continued to export near-record coal tonnages despite increasingly competitive influences. These included an improvement in Australia's labor difficulties, the return of Polish coal to Western European markets, and lower oil prices. In 1982, US port facilities were improved and expanded, and more efficient methods for scheduling foreign vessels were implemented. As a result, high volume coal shipments to US ports were routinely loaded and dispatched unhampered by bottlenecks that plagued East Coast ports in 1981. Appalachian coalfield production declined 1.4% from 1981 output and 3.9% from 1980 output. The interior region of the US showed an increase of 7.8% in production. This was primarily because of a

The 1996 Arizona Conference was held in Tucson on Dec. 8 and 9. Attendance was 648, a 12% increase from the 1995 conference. The annual conference is organized by the Arizona Conference Board of Directors, representing SME sections from throughout Arizona and adjacent areas. In addition to those representing mining and processing operations in the Arizona region, the meeting was well attended by interested parties from throughout North America. These included vendors, consultants, academia, research organizations and corporate management. The technical program highlighted the meeting. It consisted of a keynote address and morning and afternoon technical sessions. In the technical sessions, 23 papers were presented by the mining, hydrometallurgical, smelting, geology and mineral-processing divisions. The conference was then capped by a banquet that included a talk by a noted economist. Keynote address The program was kicked off by a keynote address titled "Forecasting for the 105th Congress," by Rep. John Shadegg (R-AZ). He was elected to Arizona's Fourth Congressional District in 1994. Shadegg serves on the House Budget Committee, the Resources Committee and the watchdog Government Reform Committee. He stressed the familiar conservative positions of reducing government spending, balancing the budget and states rights. As a member of the House Resources Committee, Shadegg stated his support for the mining industry. Technical sessions Mining division. Two of the five presentations described developments at two Arizona mining operations. T.J. Swendseid of Phelps Dodge presented a paper titled "New developments at Morenci" and P. Garretson of BHP presented a paper titled "Startup of the Robinson Project." Morenci continues to expand its operation and recently broke records for production. Other developments at Morenci included the completion of a 600-m (2,000-ft) drainage tunnel and stockpile rehandling. In addition, Phelps Dodge moved Morenci's crusher plant. It was completely disassembled and reassembled in just eight days. Another interesting presentation was "Predictive maintenance techniques for large electric shovels at Cyprus Sierrita," presented by T. Ritzel of Cyprus Amax. The presentation described high-technology methods for predicting maintenance problems. These methods included vibration analysis, ultrasonic detection, infrared thermography, electrical measurements and tribology (the science of lubricant evaluation). The benefits of these techniques are reduced downtime of the equipment, as was demonstrated in case studies at the mine. The other presentations were "Introduction to NOSA 5-star safety program," by R. McKinnon, BHP Copper North America, and "A new design guideline for mine sealing," by K. Fuenkajorn, Rock Engineering International. Hydrometallurgical division. The hydrometallurgical session consisted of five papers. These included a presentation titled "Recovery of gold and silver using guanidine-based extractants," by M. Vining of Henkel Corp., Tucson, AZ. In this presentation, guanidine-based extractants LIX-79 and AURIX resin were introduced. LIX-79 was shown to have applications in copper-gold and high silver ores. In ammonia-cyanide leaching, AURIX was shown to be more selective in CIL vs. RIL comparisons. Other papers in the hydrometallurgical division included "Application of cobalt in the copper industry," by J. Hawke, OMG Apex Inc.; "Series parallel conversions and production gains at Cyprus Miami Mining's dump leach and solvent extraction operation," by E. Bilson of Cyprus Amax; "Lead alloy anode corrosion at the San Manuel SXEW tankhouse," by W .M. Gort of BHP Copper and "Hydrometallurgical treatment of copper refinery slimes," by B.C. Wesstrom of Phelps Dodge. Smelting division. Three papers were presented in the smelting division session. These included updates and reports on improvements at the Hayden, Hidalgo and BHP San Manuel smelters. For example, W.A. Dutton of Phelps Dodge presented "Recent improvements at the Hidalgo Smelter." These changes were aimed at reducing environmental emissions and increasing production. They included modifications to the fugitive-gas collection system to reduce particulate emissions, rubber lining the acid plant scrubbers to reduce corrosion and the installation of a cold lime softening system for water treatment. Equally interesting papers were presented by D. Norton of Asarco, Hayden, AZ, in a paper titled "Update of the Hayden smelter process," and by D. Jones of BHP Copper, San Manuel, AZ, in a paper titled "Update on first campaign of the BHP San Manuel Copper." Geology division. The session began with a paper that outlined the progress of an exploration project in South America. "The Pierina exploration project, Ancash Province, Peru" was presented by J.D. Lowell, Lowell Mineral Exploration, Rio Rico, AZ. Another paper was then presented on a copper deposit in Grant County, New Mexico. "Zonation of supergene copper minerals at Hanover Mountain, Grant
