In the last 30 years, on-¬stream slurry analyzers have proven to be of great use in the control of mineral processing circuits. This review discusses the two most popular methods, x-ray fluorescence and neutron activation analysis, and also considers techniques which are still under development.

At present the feasibility of developing underground facilities for the storage of a number of products including toxic waste, oil, nuclear waste and low pressure gas is under investigation in e number of countries. A possible method of storage is in large excavations, Preliminary ventilation design work has identified that the climatic conditions encountered within these large excavations are a limiting ventilation pollutant within the ventilation system. This paper examines the design of a variety of sizes of excavation from a ventilation viewpoint. The main phases of an excavations lifetime can be divided into four main phases, these being construction, civil and mechanical fitting, storage, full and sealed. The paper details ventilation design options for the first two phases of e vaults lifetime, giving climatic simulations to assess the likely climatic conditions within the excavations for e number of facility depths. The options for climatic control are given and analyzed by means of climatic simulations techniques. l. INTRODUCTION The feasibility of developing underground facilities for the storage of a number of products is under investigation at present in a number of countries. This paper details a possible design for such a facility where the product is to be stored in large underground excavations. A facility layout has been designed with the aim of allowing concurrent construction and storage operations. Thus from a ventilation perspective the facility consists of two circuits , a construction ventilation circuit and a product ventilation circuit both of which are served by an intake and a return surface connection The construction and storage circuits are considered as independent of each other , any interaction in the form of leakage must be from the construction to the storage circuit. From the facility design a ventilation network was developed to assess the ventilation requirements of the facility. In analyzing the pollutant loads for the construction circuit two pollutants were recognised to be critical to the ventilation design , these being diesel exhaust fumes and heat end humidity. In this paper ventilation design options for the construction and civil and mechanical fitting phases of the excavations are analyzed by means of climatic simulation and options for climatic control within the vaults are outlined . 2. FACILITY DESIGN A schematic diagram of a facility design is illustrated in Figure 1. There would be two distinct ventilation circuits , one to service the construction operations and the second to serve the storage operations which occur concurrently with construction , the circuits are separated by ventilation bulkheads . Access to the facility for intake air is provided by two drifts, one to serve each circuit. Two shafts act as returns to surface. The facility consists of two distinct zones for the storage of two types of product. One type is to be stored in smell linear excavations. The second zone is for the storage of a second product in larger excavations. The maximum cross-sectional area and perimeter for the smell linear excavations are 456.25 m2 and 83.2 m, while for the larger excavations they are 440.1 m2 and 86.4 m. Excavation construction consists of three phases: 1. Initial pilot tunnel development between main intake and return to provide through flow ventilation. 2. Enlargement to produce the required finished cross-section. 3. Civil and mechanical engineering work to fit out the excavation ready for storage. It is proposed to excavate the excavations using drill and blest methods utilising diesel equipment. Spoil is to be transported to surface by a conveyor belt system. At any one time the maximum number of working places requiring ventilation will consist of ; 3 storage sites, 2 excavations under construction, 2 excavations undergoing civil and mechanical fitting. In 2015, 40 longwall mines provided nearly 60% of the US coal production from underground mining methods. This represents a substantial yet gradual increase from just under 50% over the last 5 years. As a result of this increased production share, the percentage of ground-fall-related fatalities in longwall mines has also increased when compared to all US underground coal mines. Additionally, about 80% of ground-fall-related fatalities have occurred in areas where the roof was supported. In an attempt to better understand the status quo of current US longwall support practices, a sample of 25 longwall mines were visited representing nearly 50% of the currently active longwall mines representing all of the major US longwall-producing regions. The resulting data was obtained from a wide variety of overburden depths, geologic conditions, mining heights, ground conditions, support practices, and gateroad configurations. The data collected is reported using both qualitative and quantitative methods. Results from the research update previous efforts in classifying mining accidents and injuries as well as current support practices presented by this author at the 2017 Society for Mining, Metallurgy, & Exploration Annual Meeting. This data provides a necessary background for future research aimed at further reduction of ground fall accidents and injuries.

INTRODUCTION This work is a continuation of the preparatory study by Rustan and Stöckel 1979 (3) and (4) of the possibilities to introduce automatic mine ventilation in Swedish mines and construction works. The preparatory study has been financed by the Swedish Board of Technical Development. In the study it was recommended that an automatic step by step control of the fans near the working place due to diesel exhaust emission would be the best solution. A more advanced alternative would be to regulate the fresh air continuously in proportion to the contamination. The latter alternative has been studied by Boliden Mineral Co in the Udden mine. In this study it was found that the air supply could be regulated continuously but it was very important where the sensors feeling the contamination were placed. An intense study of the environment underground is now being planned by our division together with specialists from the National Board of Health and Safety, The Swedish Work Environment Fund, LKAB and the local Governmental Inspection of the Workers Safety. Different gases, radon, dust, airspeed, moisture temperature and pressure is planned to be measured continuously and correlation between the parameters is going to be established to decide the best measurement parameters for regulating the system. The best situation of sensors is also going to be studied. Despite this work hasn't been done yet this paper covers some of the problems which could be encounted with continuous regulation. In this report the environment has been studied during the test with step by step regulation of fans by radio. Diesel vehicles are the largest polluters under ground in Swedish mines and we have therefore suggested that the large diesel vehicles should regulate the fans. The goal of this study has therefore been to find how active diesel vehicles should be able to start and stop gallery fans at both intake and return air. In this paper different methods for activating fans are discussed. Then the best methods are chosen and tested in the mine. In this study we have found that changes of temperature is a cheap and effective method to start and stop cross cut fans in sublevel caving and radio signals seem to be an attractive system for start and stop of gallery fans. This work has been done in close collaboration between LKAB in Kiruna and the University of Luleå - Division of Electronics and Division of Mining and Rock Excavation. A reference group for the project has been established with ventilation experts from the mines, representatives for the local mine worker's unions and authorities from the local Governmental Inspection of the Workers Safety. VENTILATION SYSTEM STUDIED In the project the ventilation system at LKAB in Kiruna has been studied. The mining method used is sublevel caving with 9-13 m slice height. The air is heated winter time over ground by hot water heat exchanger. The main fans are pushing air down to a main distribution level along the 4000 m long and about 100 m wide orebody. From the distribution level, air is taken through shafts down to the sublevels, where it is pushed through the levels by local gallery fans on both intake and return side, see fig 1. The air ( ~ 8 m3/s) is moving freely through the gallery head. The cross cuts are ventilated with smaller fans, diameter 500 mm, and flexible duct, see fig 2. The aim of this study has been to study how to start and stop gallery- and cross fans and examine the environment when the fans are stopped . In Sweden there are no regulations telling that a minimum of air amount must be supplied. Instead the hygienic limits must be fullfilled.

INTRODUCTION The General Chemical Soda Ash Operation located near Green River, Wyoming produces about 4.5 Mt of trona per year. In July 1989, Mine Ventilation Services Inc. performed a ventilation survey of this complex trona mine which had thirteen active panels spread over 36 square kilometers. The ventilation survey and subsequent study showed that the intake shaft air velocities were at their practical limits (Wallace and Rogers, 1987). The need for additional intake capacity was immediate. The ventilation network modeling delineated the best location for this new intake shaft as it applied to the 5 year ventilation plan. Unfortunately, this location, 6.5 kilometers from the soda ash processing plant, would make heating this intake air very costly. Presently, the intake air is heated by heat exchangers which use waste heat from the plant. Air heating during the winter months is necessary for miner comfort and to prevent potential freezing of water lines in the mine. It was decided to examine the feasibility of heating the air geothermally by coursing it through an old production panel. This method of air heating has been used in this region with good results at the Stauffer Chemical Operation (now Rhone-Poulenc) (Moore, 1985). In 1990, a geothermal heating study examined four different production shaft/panel configurations and a workable design was found. The operators at the General Chemical Soda Ash Operations acted on this design and began raise boring a ventilation shaft in the Spring of 1991. This paper describes the ventilation system, briefly, and the geothermal heating studies performed. Findings of the 1990 geothermal studies are then compared to field data acquired in the Winter of 1992. THE VENTILATION SYSTEM The ventilation system at General Chemical had four shafts serving the mining horizon in July 1989; three of these shafts are located at the Northwest end of the mine. The active work areas had progressed to the South over the past years and supplying ventilation has become increasingly difficult. The 6.1 meter diameter #3 Production shaft and the men and materials compartment of the 6.1 meter diameter #2 Split Shaft had reached their air velocity limits. Conversely, the 4.6 meter diameter #5 Exhaust Shaft was under utilized. Ventilation studies showed the conversion of the 3.7 meter diameter #1 Exhaust Shaft to an intake would provide adequate intake capacity for two years. The next option to improve ventilation was the addition of an intake shaft at the southeast part of the mine at the intersection of H Mains South(H-M-S)and J Mains East(J-M-E) (See Figure 1). A service shaft has been planned for the extreme Southeast end in the late 1990's. Ventilation network analyses showed this interim intake shaft would have to be at least 2.5 meters in diameter to postpone the service shaft construction beyond 1995. The greater the size of the borehole, the further the construction could be postponed. In October 1991, General Chemical commissioned the 4.57 meter diameter #4 Ventilation Shaft near the junction of H-M-S and J-M-E as shown in Figure 1. The L95 panel would be used for air heating as described in the geothermal heating section to follow. GEOTHERMAL STUDIES Geothermal heating studies were performed by MVS Inc. in May 1990. Using a modified code of CLIMSIM, an underground mine climatic simulation model, several different shaft/panel configurations were examined to see which would provide adequate air heating during the winter months. CLIMSIM simulates heat flow into a single underground airway. The program was used to evaluate the heat flow to and from the airway surface and to calculate the resulting change in dry bulb temperature of the ventilating air. CLIMSIM uses inlet air conditions, airway characteristics, and rock thermal properties input by the user to predict the variation of psychrometric and thermodynamic parameters along an underground airway.

Optimization of a three-dimensional (3D) underground stope layout is complex given the number of variables and constraints to consider, such as the stope size. Determination of the appropriate stope size in stope layout optimization problems is a complex process that must consider several factors including placement of infrastructure and development, production scheduling, and equipment selection. An inappropriate stope layout can result in unrealistic expectations for a production schedule, consequently negatively affecting the derived economic value. Therefore, this paper used a dual interchange algorithm (DIA) to evaluate the effect of stope size on the stope layout economic value (SLEV) for a synthetic Platreef mineral deposit planned for extraction using sublevel open-stoping. The results showed that generally as the stope size increases, the SLEV decreases. This aligns with practical mining because larger stope sizes have a higher chance of incurring more dilution which reduces economic value, while smaller stope sizes enable more flexible extraction where unprofitable blocks can be left unmined as waste, thus increasing the derived SLEV.

Newmont Gold Company, formerly Carlin Gold Mining Company, is a publicly owned corporation, 95% owned by Newmont Mining Corporation. Newmont Gold Company has operated gold recovery operations North of Carlin, Nevada, since 1965. Development of the Gold Quarry ore body, 19 kilometers south of the original mine, resulted in the decision to construct gold recovery and ancillary facilities in what is referred to as the Southern Area. Plant No. 2, located 11 kilometers North of Carlin, Nevada, was designed to treat 6350 tonnes per day of oxidized gold bearing ore assaying 2.5 grams per tonne of Au at an average recovery of 87%. Flowsheet development conducted by Newmont personnel resulted in the decision to construct a carbon-in-pulp recovery circuit preceded by two-stage grinding, Detailed engineering was done at Toronto by Bechtel of Canada beginning on January 1, 1984. Actual construction began on March 1, 1984, and was completed in June, 1985. First feed was run on June 22, 1985.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, Kennecott Copper Corp., and New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology are cooperating on a research project to improve extraction of copper from previously leached waste dumps that are in part compacted and impervious to leach solutions. The field work is being done at the "J" leach dump, Chino Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corp., Santa Rita, N. Mex. The laboratory percolation leaching tests were made at the U.S. Bureau of Mines Salt Lake City Metallurgy Research Center on drill core samples from the "J" dump to determine how much copper might be leached if permeability could be restored by explosive heaving or other means. The core samples from nine drill holes on "J" dump contained from 0.06 to 0.14 percent copper. Copper extractions ranging from 15 to 3 percent were obtained in 75 days by percolation leaching of minus-1-inch material with dilute sulfuric acid. The tests results indicate that about 2'7 percent of the copper remaining in the "J" dump could be extracted under ideal leaching conditions.

"The objective of this study was to develop a laboratory-scale method to rank the ignition and fire hazards of commonly used underground mine materials and to eliminate the need for expensive large-scale tests that are currently being used. A radiant panel apparatus was used to determine the relevant thermal characteristics of the materials: time to ignition, critical heat flux for ignition, heat of gasification, and mass loss rate. Three thermal parameters, TRP, TP1, and TP4, were derived from the data, then were developed and subsequently used to rank the combined ignition and fire hazards of the combustible materials from low hazard to high hazard. The results compared favorably with thermal and ignition hazards of similar materials reported in the literature and represent a simpler approach to quantifying these combustible hazards. INTRODUCTION The potential fire hazard from combustible mine materials is a major concern that can impact the safety of mine workers. Combustible materials tend to be solids and within this category there exist degrees of flammability and fire resistance. These materials may be readily ignitable or they may be able to withstand high temperatures and high heat fluxes. Presently, no simple methodology exists to assess these possible fire behaviors and quantify the resultant fire hazards. Thus, better knowledge of the thermal properties and chemical characteristics of combustible materials is of great importance to the safety of mine workers. Tewarson [1994] developed a methodology which he subsequently used to evaluate the ignition and fire resistant properties of combustible mine materials, but these efforts are more than 20 years old, and do not include many of the new materials used in mines today. The standard practice that has evolved for a combustible material to be approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration for use in underground coal mines is to conduct extensive and costly large-scale experiments on each new material that is used in a particular mine operation. Results of such tests provide pass/fail answers to the questions of a material’s flammability or fire resistance, yet they provide little, if any, information that will lead to a better understanding of the basic mechanisms involved. Therefore, there is a need to quantify material flammability properties and to develop a methodology to rank the ignition and fire hazards of commonly used underground mine materials. During the heating and ignition stages of combustible materials, properties such as smolder susceptibility, minimum surface temperature for ignition, thermal conductivity, heat capacity, density, and heat of gasification are known to be important [Apte, 2006]. During the flaming stage, additional parameters, such as the heat of combustion, heat release rate, flame spread rate, yields of soot/smoke, and toxic gas production become more important as the flame is sustained and spreads. In very general terms, the heat flux incident on the surface of a solid combustible not only controls the rate of temperature increase of the local fuel surfaces, resulting in expulsion of fuel vapors that sustain the flaming process, but also the heating of other combustible surfaces that subsequently ignite and spread flame."

INTRODUCTION The occurrence of the radioactive element radium, [2gg~a], often in trace amounts, in the crust of the earth gives rise to a flux of the daughter product radon, ['ii~n], across the earth-air interface. This so-called exhalation process has been studied by many investigators [KO 45, Kra 64, Pe 66, Wi 741] over several decades. In the earlier investigations the exhalation process was studied in a purely geophysical context, but over the last 20 years it has been realized, that under certain conditions the exhalation may be intense enough to also have radiological implications. This is for example the case where relatively radium-rich wastes or by-products, like uranium mill tailings and phospho-gypsum, are stored in larger quantities. In order to be able to predict the radiological impact on the environnent it is necessary to know the rate of exhalation of radon from the surface of the exhaling material. Usually the determination of these exhalation rates has been done by measurements in situ directly upon the accumulated material [~le 74, Ha 791. Although such field measurements have the obvious merit of dealing directly with the full scale problem, the results are often lacking in generality, making predictions for other situations difficult or even impossible. The present paper describes some results of an investigation where it is attempted from laboratory measurements on samples of limited size to obtain material parameters, which are suited for extrapolating and predicting the radiational behaviour of larger accumulations of the material. THEORY Let us consider a sample of a radon exhaling material enclosed in a container with a dead space volume, Vd, and initially containing radon free air. If the total exhalation rate (number of atoms per unit time) is c, the radon concentration (number of atoms per unit volume) N will initially grow with the time t according to the equation [ ] where [R] is the decay constant of radon. As the concentration (or activity) in the container grows, the net exhalation rate will slow down because of back diffusion, and, furthermore, radon atoms may be removed from the container, not only by radioactive decay, but also by diffusion leakage [JO 81 ]. If, however,only the initial. part of the activity growth curve is considered, the total exhalation rate, c, is given by [c = r•Vd(2) where r is the initial activity growth rate in the container. Let the container be cylindrical with an inner cross-section S and filled to a height L with a radon exhaling material with the specific mass p, the porosity E, the radon pore production rate f and the diffusion length i. Labrador City is located in the southwestern portion of Newfoundland-Labrador, approximately 965 kilometers north-east of Montreal. The mine and beneficiation complex of the Iron Ore Company of Canada, known as the Carol Project, is situated 535 metres above sea level in a climatic region characterized by cold winters and short, cool summers. History The iron Ore Company of Canada commenced work in the area in 1949, however, it was not until 1958 that the decision was made to proceed with mining operations. The ore body consists of Specular Hematite (Fe203) and Magnetite (Fe304) with small quantities of Limonite and Geothite. The average grade of the ore bodies is 39% iron.

Phase 1 of the second line of the Cairo Metro includes approximately 5.83km, of double track tunnels excavated in water bearing sand of the Nile flood plain. Closed face bentonite slurry shield tunnel boring machines 9.43m in diameter were used. State-of-the-art technology was used in TBM operations and guidance, with surface settlements averaging less than 14mm, and alignment deviations averaging less than 25mm. Production rates up to 580m/month were achieved, with average production of 4.8m/shift, 13.4m/day and78m/week. The completed tunnels, lined with precast concrete segments, are completely watertight under 20m of water pressure.

Pittsburgh No. 8 coal, cleaned by conventional froth flotation, was oxidized in a 2-L Parr stirred bench-top autoclave. Autoclave tests were carried out for up to 5 hrs under the following conditions: 150 to 225ºC, 60 to 500 psi 02 and 15 to 60 g of coal per 600 mL of distilled water. The oxidation of coal was evaluated by measuring the total acidic group formed on the surface of the coal and by measuring the adsorption (under standard conditions) of calcium ion from a solution. The degree of oxidation of the coal increased continuously, without much leveling off, with increasing oxygen pressure. With increasing temperature, the oxidation of the coal increased sharply between 150 to 175ºC and then leveled off above 175 °C. The adsorption of calcium was >3% on coal oxidized under the most favorable conditions. The adsorption of calcium on coal increased sharply with increasing equilibrium pH. The loss in Btu was found to be sensitive to oxidation temperature. This study concluded that the optimum oxidation of coal is achieved over 3 hrs at high oxygen pressures (e.g., 500 psi) at ~170ºC. This study also concluded that, when measured in terms of calcium adsorption, Btu loss and reaction time, the oxidation achieved in an autoclave is far superior to that achieved in a fluidized bed.

A pilot plant was constructed to attrition scrub and deslime North Carolina phosphate ore. A 15.2 cm (6 in.) diameter pilot-scale Linatex Hydrosizer was used for desliming. Four tests were run at a throughput of 2.9 t/hr/m2 (0.30 ton/hr/f t2) and a teeter bed density of 1.12-1.13 g/cm3. The teeter water flow rate was varied to create an upflow velocity ranging from 0.25-0.47 cm/s. (This latter value is equal to the terminal settling velocity of a 200 mesh (74 micron) particle having a density of 2.7 g/cm3.) The recovery of +200 mesh oversize to the sizer underflow was 95%-96%, regardless of the teeter flow rate. The recovery of -200 mesh undersize to the sizer overflow increased from about 90% at 0.25 cm/sec to 100% at 0.47 cm/sec. A metallurgical balance that was conducted for one of the tests showed that less than 2% of the phosphatic value was lost to the overflow. A fifth test was run using an upflow velocity of 0.47 cm/sec; however, the teeter bed density was maintained at 1.05 cm/sec. This change had the effect of reducing the cut point (d50), while maintaining complete slime removal.

A plant cannot be said to be "automated" unless the control system has the capability to react automatically in accordance with predetermined programs under a great multiplicity of operational situations.

The first phase of an investigation of the chemical composition of subsurface water and the hydrochemical processes in and near the abandoned Nordic tailings at Elliot Lake, Ontario, was conducted in 1979. The Nordic area, which covers 85 hectares with an average thickness of 10 m and overlies deposits of permeable glaciofluvial sand, contains 15 million tonnes of tailings with 4-7% pyrite. Nests of standpipe piezometers installed at three locations on the tailings indicate that seepage through the tailings is predominantly downward. The water table in the tailings slopes from the north side of the tailings dam, where it is within a metre of surface to the south side near the tailings dam, where it is approximately 10 m below surface. When they were deposited during the period from 1957 to 1968, the tailings contained pore water at a pH of about 8 resulting from neutralization treatment in the mill. At the three piezometer nests, the pH increases from 3 near the water table to 7 near the bottom of the tailings. The pore water in the tailings is gradually becoming acidic because of oxidation of pyrite in the zone above the water table. The concentrations of Fe, Mn, Ni, Co, Zn and Pb are high in the shallow acidic zone and much lower in the deeper neutral zone. Concentrations of 226Ra range from 30 to 230 pCi/L. At the three sites concentrations of major ions in the permeable sand a short interval beneath the tailings indicate 226Ra presence of tailings seepage, but Ra concentrations are only 2 to 8 pCi/L. Greater downward penetration of 226Ra probably occurs in the area closer to the tailings dam. Monitoring of a network of multilevel bundle piezometers installed in permeable sand that extends southward from beneath the tailings indicates the occurrence of a plume of tailingsderived water containing high concentrations of Ca, Mg, Fe and S04 that extend 400 m downgradient from the tailings dam. The total dissolved solids decline from 20,000 at the dam to less than 500 mg/L at the identifiable downgradient periphery of the plume. A much smaller but distinct plume of water with high heavy metal concentrations and 226Ra in the range of 10 to 130 pCi/L extends from beneath the dam for a distance of 15 m. The pH of the groundwater in this heavy metal-radium plume is 4 to 5, whereas elsewhere in zone of groundwater with high dissolved solids, the pH is above 6. The Lupin mine consists of a gold mining, milling, and refining complex located 400 km (250 miles) northeast of Yellowknife and 100 km (60 miles) south of the Arctic Circle on the southwest shore of Contwoyto Lake in Canada's Northwest Territories. (Fig.1). The mine was commissioned in 1982 and is presently producing 6 t/a (193,000 oz per year) of gold from 612 kt (675,000 st) of ore. The success of this operation is due to such factors as the continuity and grade of the ore body, the competency of the host rock, low mining costs, efficient milling, the transportation of people and materials to and from the mine site, and the unique work schedule resulting in a stable workforce. Echo Bay Mines operated a silver mine at Port Radium on Great Bear Lake, Northwest Territories, from 1965 to 1982. The company first obtained an option on the Lupin property from Inco in February 1979 and completed an underground exploration program in 1979-1980. Topographic relief is low and vegetation is sparse in the continental subarctic climatic zone, consisting mainly of moss and lichens. Temperature extremes are from 24°C to - 45°C (+75°F to -49°F) with an annual mean of -12°C (+54°F). Permafrost extends from near surface to 500 m (1640 ft) in the ore zone. Its remote location and harsh climate presented some challenging design and logistical problems. Construction began at the Lupin mine site in 1980. Before construction, a 1.5-km (5000-ft) gravel landing strip was prepared, suitable for landing a C 130 Hercules. The entire Lupin project took 20 months to build. All of the men and materials were transported to the site with some 1100 Hercules flights and several hundred Convair 640 flights. The Convairs transported construction crews, which numbered 400 at their peak, and also carried 3.2 kt (3535 st) of supplies during construction. The facilities were constructed and commissioned for a total cost of C$135 million. The operation was originally designed to throughput 860 t/d (950 stpd). Expansion in 1983, circuit refinements, and some capital projects brought the daily throughput to 1.7 kt/d (1850 stpd). The underground mine delivers 612 kt/a (675,000 stpy) of ore to the mill at an average head grade of 8.46 g/t (0.3 oz per st). The ore is nonrefractory and is processed in a conventional cyanide leach using the Merrill Crowe process. Gold recovery is about 95.0%. The average production cost is $US5.85/g ($US 182 per oz) based on 1987 figures. Mining at Lupin – Geology The Lupin deposit occurs in amphibolite grade iron formation overlain by mudstones (phyllites) and underlain by graywacke (quartzites). Contacts between the wallrock units and the iron formation are well defined. It has been folded and tilted into a megascopic antiform-synform-antiform structure (Fig. 2). Gold occurs primarily within the sulfide rich iron formation, with some minor occurrences in sulfide poor iron formation. The distinction between sulfide rich and sulfide poor iron formation is based on a visual cutoff of 5% total sulfide content. Mining widths are determined by an assay cutoff of 4.2 g/t (0.15 oz per st) gold. There are few tons between 1.7 and 4.2 g/t (0.06 and 0.15 oz per st). The amphibolitic iron formation at the mine ranges from 1.5 to 20 m (5 to 65 ft) wide and has been followed over a strike length exceeding 1.7 km (5600 ft). The wider portions of the ore body tend to occur at its north extent and south nose. The gold-bearing iron formation appears on plan as a Z-shaped structure made up of three zones: the West, Center, and East. The West and Center zones dip steeply to the East (75° to 90°). Each of the ore zones plunge at an angle of about 65°. Total strike length of the three zones is more than 610 m (2000 ft). The zones are confirmed at a depth of 650 m (2130 ft) below surface. The Center zone is the widest and varies from 4.5 to 20 m (15 to 65 ft) while the West is the narrowest, averaging 1.5 m ( 5 ft). The footwall is comprised of quartzites that are strongly jointed and locally grades into phyllite, which comprises the hanging wall. The hanging wall and footwall are reversed in the West zone. Mineralogy of the ore at Lupin consists of amphibole minerals (hornblende, cummingtonite, and grunerite), feldspars, quartz, occasionally garnet, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, minor pyrite, and trace chalcopyrite. Also found in minor amounts are scheelite, apatite, epidote, calcite, tourmaline, and some arsenides (notable loellingite). Quartz
