In the froth flotation process the detrimental effect of slimes on the froth flotability of valuable minerals has long been known.1 Work by Aplan2 on the froth flotation of coal has shown that the presence of clay slimes causes loss in flotation selectivity, and recovery of combustibles. Obviously then the presence of clay slimes to any great extent in the froth cell feed in a coal preparation plant is undesirable. This problem is exacerbated in plants treating raw 600 um (28#) by zero material due to the variation in flotation with size. The net effect of this phenomenon in a bank of cells treating raw minus 600 µm (28#) material s that by the time adequate flotation of the coarsest size fractions has occurred the finer sizes are already producing undesirable high ash material, which often leads to unacceptable overall quality. Reduction in aeration rate and/or chemical addition to combat this, further decreases the flotation rate of the coarsest fraction leading to heavy losses of coarse low ash coal to the tailings. The above mentioned characteristics formed a key aspect of the fine coal circuitry design at Elk Run Coal Company in Sylvester, WV. The plant was designed to produce compliance steam coal (less than 1.20 lbs. S02/million b.t.u.) Desliming ahead of the froth flotation was included, as the slimes in the plant feed were clay rich, had very high ash levels, and low potential recovery. Lab testwork had also shown that poor selectivity would be expected if raw minus 600 um (28#) material was froth floated.

During the last few years high-tonnage plants have been designed with comminution circuits using semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mills, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR), or both, followed by ball mills in different configurations. A strong interest in improved energy efficiency and reduction of carbon footprint, along with the recent launch of new high-capacity crushers and stirred grinding mills, has driven the industry to investigate the development of novel flowsheets. This paper presents work based on recent projects that include modeling and simulation of two innovative circuits recently considered for current projects. One circuit uses autogenous (AG) mills and parallel trains of crusher-HPGR and the other is a modified three-stage crushing circuit with the use of HPGRs and pebble mills. The paper indicates the potential savings in operating costs provided by the HPGR-pebble mill circuit when compared to a more conventional SAG-mill-based circuit.

The concept of risk management is applied to multiple aspects of the mining lifecycle including safety, mine design, business plan—anything that affects getting the ore to the mill for production. However, risk management is not a topic that can readily be taught in universities. Many situations require knowledge gained from experience to know how this impacts current and future operations. Recent graduates, who must develop and apply decisions based on geotechnical monitoring, likely have not developed “operational experience” and may not be aware of options and typical applications. Thorough resources that explain different monitoring systems, and when and how to implement them, are available for geotechnical professionals. Accessibility to this information can often cause information overload, leaving one unsure of where to start, without knowing where to start. This paper is intended to serve as a high-level overview of development practices, levels of risk, and risk tolerance for entry-level geotechnical and mining professionals who do not come from a geotechnical background. Summarized detail on typical monitoring practices, types of instrumentation, and how to communicate what the data indicates to key stakeholders are provided.

St. Peter sandstone is an arenaceous sheet that covers large area in North America. The interest for St. Peter sandstone has been increasing due to the upward trend for hydrofracturing and the consequent need for fracking sand. This material is possesses very unique mechanical properties. On the one hand, it is brittle as characterized by an unusually high friction angle, up to 69°, and steeply curved failure envelopes. On the other hand, it is friable, possessing extremely low, and in most cases zero cohesion. The underground mines that are working under this condition are lacking the ground control techniques for this particular mining environment. The geotechnical properties of the St. Peter sandstone were examined using uniaxial test, triaxial test, porosity test, flexural strength test. This paper aims to investigate the effect of microstructure on strength properties, utilizing microscopic studies, index test (porosity, size distribution).

The paper describes experiments at the Somerset Mine, Colorado, under a cooperative agreement between U.S. Steel and the U.S. Bureau of Mines. A test was made of the tube bundle method of mine air sampling which was developed for European longwall mines; some 300,000 running feet of tubing provided continuous monitoring at 39 locations. Carbon monoxide concentrations were obtained with standard deviations of less than 1 ppm and oxygen concentrations with standard deviations of less than 0.20 percent. A base level of CO index (ppm CO evolved/pct 02 removed)) was determined to be 0-20 through most of the passageways of the mine. However, in one working section where the coal was initially hot (about 180°F within a pillar) the CO index was demonstrably higher, >20 trending upward to about 60 when smoke appeared and the section was sealed. The data are discussed in terms of laboratory experiments on CO evolution from coals.

This paper presents the results of an experimental study undertaken to demonstrate the feasibility of using silica sand as a grinding media in stirred ball mills for ultra-fine coal grinding. Laboratory batch as well as bench scale continuous tests indicate that the use of silica sand can reduce the energy consumption by 50% and more over its steel media counter-part. Moreover, this approach has been found to eliminate the disadvantages observed with grinding using steel media such as high replacement cost, contamination of coal through media wear, greater degree of coal oxidation due to higher slurry temperature and greater level of noise dissipation. Additionally, coal-sand attrition system reduces the manpower time required which is often spent towards cleaning and storing of steel media in inert atmosphere to avoid rust and corrosion problems.

The objectives of this generic study were to use numerical modeling techniques to determine under what conditions seismic waves generated by an earthquake might cause instability to an underground opening, or cause fracturing and joint movement that would lead to an increase in the permeability of the rock mass. In general, the study showed that moderate earthquakes (up to 0.41 g) did not cause instability of the tunnel or major fracturing of the rock mass. An artificial rock-burst tremor with high accelerations, however, was found to be amplified around the tunnel, and fracturing occurred as a result of the seismic loading in salt and granite. In shale, even moderate seismic loading resulted in tunnel collapse.

Nonspecific airway hyperresponsiveness is a central feature of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and has been associated with atopy in the presence of environmental exposures such as smoking. Coal miners may develop emphysema and lung function decrements related to their dust exposure. To investigate the roles of airway responsiveness and atopy in these effects, we evaluated the relationships among smoking, a history of hay fever or seasonal rhinitis, and airway responsiveness (AR) in a group of underground bituminous coal miners and nonmining controls. All subjects had a normal baseline percent predicted FEV1. Increased airway responsiveness was defined as a 15% or greater decrease in FEV1 following methacholine inhalation. 85 miners (45%) and 99 controls (46%) were current smokers, 59 miners (31%) and 55 controls (26%) were lifetime nonsmokers; former smokers were excluded from further analysis. Overall, 25% of 144 miners included in this analysis had increased AR, as opposed to 29% of 155 controls. Thirty-seven percent of both miners and controls had a history of seasonal rhinitis. Significantly fewer miners (15%) had a history of hay fever compared to controls (25%, p< 0.05). Figure 1 shows the prevalence of increased airway responsiveness in miners and controls in association with hay fever. In both smoking and non smoking miners the presence of a hay fever history was significantly (p < 0.05) associated with a higher prevalence of increased AR. Little effect was seen in smoking (p = 0.827) and nonsmoking (p = 0.940) controls. Figure 2 shows a similar higher prevalence of increased AR associated with symptoms of seasonal rhinitis in the mining group. This was significant (p < 0.01) only in the smoking miners. No effect was noted in the controls. These data suggest that the association of a history of hay fever or seasonal rhinitis symptoms with increased airway responsiveness may be more common in coal mining, compared to non-dusty occupations. Although the implication of these data are unclear, further study of miners with a history of hay fever or seasonal rhinitis is warranted. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The mines are located at Broken Hill in the western part of New South Wales, Australia, 930 km west¬northwest of Sydney. Mining Methods Where pillars must be left between stopes, extraction of a block of ore between two or more levels is carried out in stages: 1) Stopes are mined overhand by horizontal cut¬and-fill stoping, or by long-hole stoping. The various methods of horizontal cut-and-fill stoping used are desig¬nated as: -Loader cut-and-fill stoping with horizontal blast¬holes and diesel load-haul-dump (LHD) units. -Open stoping with horizontal blastholes and com¬pressed air or electric scrapers, or with diesel or electric LHD units. Square-set timber stoping, where ground condition precludes open stoping. The backs are sup¬ported with timber square sets. Pattern rockbolting of the backs may be used as an intermediate stage between open stoping and square-set stoping. 2) Vertical pillars are mined by undercut-and-fill stoping or by vertical crater retreat stoping. 3) Where a horizontal pillar has been formed below the level above the primary stope, this level pillar, usually 6.1 to 8.2 m in depth, may be mined by over¬hand square-set stoping or by undercut-and-fill. Long-hole stoping is used at the Zinc Corp. (ZC) and New Broken Hill Consolidated (NBHC) to mine parts of the zinc-rich A and B lodes. Drilling is carried out from drill drives and, in some cases, sills. Hole sizes used are 165 mm (61/2 in.), 110 mm (4&apos;h in.), and 65 mm (21/2 in.) nominal diam with hole lengths being limited to 50, 30, and 20 m respectively. Ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) and water gel explosives are used. Broken ore is loaded from drawpoints at the bottom of the stope using rubber-tired diesel-driven LHD units which deliver ore to an orepass. Annual production at Zinc Corp. and NBHC accord¬ing to mining method is given in Table 1. At Zinc Corp. mining is being carried out at depths varying between 200 and 832 m. At NBHC it ranges from 528 to 915 m below the surface. The average travel time to the stope is 30 to 45 min. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS Size, Shape, and Dip There are six separate lodes which carry minable ore in the mines of Zinc Corp. and New Broken Hill Consolidated. The lowest of these and the main ore bodies presently being mined at Zinc Corp. are the lead lodes, consisting of a siliceous fluoritic ore body (No. 3 lens) and overlying it a calcite rhodonitic ore body (No. 2 lens). Each possesses characteristic ratios of lead, silver, and zinc, although the grade within each lens is variable, in places being as high as 30% Pb. There are also low¬grade portions which consist chiefly of poorly mineral¬ized rhodonitic material. No. 3 lens terminates within the Zinc Corp. leases, while No. 2 lens continues into the NBHC leases where it continues to provide a significant proportion of pro¬duction from the mine. Overlying the No. 2 lens are the various zinc-rich ore bodies. In ascending sequence these are lower No. 1 lens, upper No. 1 lens, A lode, and B lode. A typical assay for the small No. 1 lens group ore bodies is 8% lead, 50 g/t silver, and 20% zinc. The `A&apos; lode is a large low-grade ore body in which the higher grade sections assay 4% lead, 30 g/t silver, and 10% zinc; larger quantities of lower grade ma¬terial also occur. B lode, the main zinc lode, typically assays 5% lead, 30 g/t silver, and 17% zinc. B lode increases in size as it extends south, and in NBHC is a major ore body, contributing about 52% of the production. All the lodes pitch south, the average pitch being 0.52 rad (30°) in the Zinc Corp. leases and rather flatter than this in the NBHC leases (see Figs. 1-3). The ground is all competent rock. Production requirements at Zinc Corp. are 900 000 t and 1 200 000 at NBHC.

Two of the open-pit, copper-molybdenum mining operations of Duval Corporation are located in the foothills of the Sierrita Mountains approximately 30 miles southwest of Tucson, Arizona. In March 1959, mining from a moderate sized porphyry deposit known as the "Esperanza orebody" was begun at a rate of 10,000 tons of ore per day. Some five years later, a sizeable group of mineral claims west of Esperanza became available to Duval. Earlier exploration and development drilling in this area by others indicated an orebody of greater size but lower tenor than that of Esperanza. A drilling program conducted by Duval not only verified the results of the prior drilling but in addition, revealed a continuation of the mineralization to the south and east. Thus was developed the Sierrita orebody. Open pit design delineated 414 million tons of ore containing an average copper content of 0.35 percent and a molybdenum content of 0.036 percent. In April 1966, the office of Emergency Planning authorized General Services Administration to undertake a program under the Defense Production Act to en¬courage additional domestic production of copper in the interest of national defense. Duval&apos;s Sierrita Project was brought to GSA&apos;s attention in May 1966 on November 28, 1967, an agreement providing for the development of the Sierrita Property was consummated with GSA. In March 1970, the first copper-molybdenum concentrates were produced in the 72,000 tons-per-day concentrator. Pre-production stripping exceeded the scheduled 105 million tons despite the comparatively short lead time available to equip the mine, build the mine plant facilities, and staff the technical, supervisory, and labor forces. Shortly before the first concentrates were produced, plans were being formulated for a program to increase processing capacity by approximately 15 percent, which entailed increasing overall mining capacity by approximately 50,000 tons per day. This program is scheduled for completion early in 1971.

Jetbelt is the trade name for the air supported belt conveyor. It does not use troughing rollers. Jetbelt conveyors support the conveyor belt on a thin film of air. The belt rides in a steel trough which has small holes equally spaced along the bottom of the trough. Air comes through the holes under the belt, thereby supporting the belt. The air pressure is provided by a single centrifugal blower that creates very low pressure, between 249 Pa and747 Pa [10" and 30" water column], depending upon the tonnage being conveyed. The volume of air required ranges between .001415 m3/S and .00283 m3/S [3 and 6 CFM] per lineal foot of conveyor. Therefore, depending on tonnage being conveyed, a 304.8m[1000&apos;] conveyor might require as little as 1.415m3/S [3000 CFM] or as much as 2.83m3/S [6000 CFM.]. (See Figure 1) Horsepower requirements can be less than troughing idler conveyors and considerably less than some other forms of bulk conveying. Savings are most significant in horizontal and down hill (regenerative) conveyor designs. Horsepower to lift material, of course, does not change.

Andalusite is a member of the sillimanite group of minerals consisting of andalusite, kyanite, and sillimanite. These minerals are the structural polymorphs of Al,Si05 (the anhydrous silicate of aluminium) and although chemically similar, they differ in physical properties due to their different crystal structures. For further information on the sillimanite group, see the chapter on Kyanite and Related Minerals that follows. The minerals are generally the products of the metamorphism of alumina-rich sediments and are found in schists, gneisses, or hornfelses, which have undergone either regional or thermal metamorphism from their original form. Sedimentary deposits may also form since the minerals are chemically and physically resistant to breakdown. When heated to a sufficiently high temperature the sillimanite group minerals convert to mullite with a resultant volume expansion and the liberation of silica. Due to the stability of the mullite formed, its high hot strength and resistance to chemical and physical erosion, they are widely used in the manufacture of refractories and special ceramics (Table 1). The reaction can be represented as follows: [ ] The worldwide use of these minerals depends to a large degree on their availability (Fig. 1). Andalusite, with its lower conversion temperature and the lowest volume expansion on being heated is the natural choice as a raw material to produce energy-saving refractories without prior calcination. The Republic of South Africa holds by far the largest minable andalusite deposits of the world, estimated at some 70 Mt of known in situ reserves. The only other large commercial production of andalusite comes from France, with known reserves of about 5 Mt. Potential new deposits are known from China, Ireland, Australia, and South America. World consumption of andalusite in special performance refractories has risen from less than 10 ktpy in 1960 to nearly 300 ktpy in 1990, which is due to cost effectiveness in many industrial applications compared to other conventional refractory products. Andalusite-based refractories have traditionally been used in Europe, South Africa, and the Far East; usage in America was limited in the past due to relatively high delivery costs and availability of other local refractory minerals. However, there is a significant trend towards greater use of andalusite in North America, thus opening new markets and replacing other traditional refractory raw materials. GEOLOGY Andalusite occurs in metamorphosed rocks of clay-like com- position, as in the andalusite-hornfelses in thermal aureoles (contact metamorphism), formed under conditions of high temperatures and low stress, and in regional metamorphic rocks, such as the andalusite-schists. These schists are mostly unconnected with definite igneous intrusions but were presumably also formed at high temperatures and under low stress. Andalusite can also appear in alluvial deposits associated with the primary deposits. At depths of 10 to 20 km, temperatures of up to 450°C might be expected. Another result of increasing depth is an increase of pressure due to the load of the rock cover. The load stresses involved in metamorphism is generally believed to lie in the range 0 to 10 000 bars. During contact metamorphism the increase in temperature is brought about by the injection of magma. The temperature reached in the country rock at some distance from the igneous body will always be less than the initial temperature of the intrusion, which is presumably less than 1 200°C, and will vary with time and distance from the contact. A simple metamorphic reaction involving dehydration of an aluminous sediment can be: [ ] At higher temperatures sillimanite would form at the expense of andalusite, while kyanite would be the mineral formed at higher pressures, as can be seen in the phase diagram of A12Si05 (Fig. 2).

The history and development of the FMC Coke process has been reported in numerous presentations over the past 10 years (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) but a short review is desirable, especially regarding the aspects that are influenced by the coal to be used. F&apos;MC has been developing this process in pilot facilities since 1956 and in a modest sized plant in Kemmerer, Wyoming since 1960 (Figure I). This plant produces strong uniformly sized coke briquettes from a completely non-coking coal, namely Elkol, a sub-bituminous coal of the Adaville seam. Since operating commercially, over 300,000 tons have been produced, 90% of which has been used in electric phosphorus furnaces and some 10% of which went for trials in iron blast furnaces. We believe that this commercial use of non-coking coals is a unique experience in the history of coke manufacture.

Selenium-rich metallurgical waste, also known commercially as “crude selenium,” is a byproduct of the copper (Cu) refining process. This by-product, contains ~ 90% selenium (Se), precious metals, platinum group metals (PGMs), and other critical elements. This study investigated the leaching efficiency of Se from the sludge under alkaline conditions using different oxidizing agents to enrich PGMs and precious metals in the leach solid residue. The effectiveness of each oxidizing agent during leaching was assessed and compared. Additionally, Eh-pH diagram for Se was established under specific experimental conditions and utilized to inform process optimization. Key variables, including leaching time, temperature, and oxidant concentration, were evaluated for their impact on the efficiency and the selectivity of the oxidative alkaline leaching process.

Introduction The separation of minerals from complex sulfide ores by flotation requires careful control of the surface chemical behaviors of the minerals constituting the ores. When the minerals in the ore are finely disseminated, extremely fine grinding is needed to liberate the minerals. Fine grinding is not only an energy-intensive operation, but also influences the flotation behaviors of liberated minerals. Steel balls are commonly used for grinding. Galvanic interactions occur not only between sulfide minerals and grinding media but also among the different sulfide minerals themselves. The electrochemical characteristics of chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite when they are independently coupled with steel grinding media and the relevance of these characteristics to the flotation behavior of these minerals have been exten¬sively studied (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992: Li and Iwasaki, 1992). These studies dealt with reactions in two electrode combinations, simulating mineral-grinding medium and mineral-mineral interactions. In practice, however, it is more common to involve more than one sulfide mineral. In a study of a pyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system, Pozzo et al. (1989) provided evidence that a mineral having an intermediate potential could behave differently, depending on the condi¬tion of galvanic contact. This investigation was undertaken to study a chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system to gain better in¬sight into the mechanism of multiple galvanic interactions. A three-electrode system was chosen to simulate a typical copper sulfide ore. The sulfide minerals were represented by chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite. The grinding medium was rep¬resented by mild steel. The nature of galvanic interactions involving these minerals and grinding medium in an oxygen atmosphere was investigated in a three-electrode combina¬tion, and an attempt was made to relate the laboratory flotation results of pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite ores. Possible implications to the differential flotation of complex sulfide ores are discussed. Key words: Electrochemistry, Flotation, Sulfide ores Experimental The pyrrhotite (57.74% Fe, 0.09% Cu, 4.84% Ni and 36.54% S) sample was obtained from Falconbridge Ltd.&apos;s Strathcona mine, Ontario, Canada, and the chalcopyrite (26.00% Cu, 28.57% Fe, 0.05% Ni and 31.52% S) sample came from Transvaal, South Africa. Mild steel (AISI 1020, 0.2% C) was chosen to represent grinding media. A conventional three-electrode cell was used in the elec¬trochemical measurements. The working, counter and refer¬ence electrodes were, respectively, sulfide minerals or mild steel, graphite rod and saturated calomel electrode (SCE, 0.245 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode). The exposed areas of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium electrodes were approximately the same (0.17 to 0.19 cm2). The preparation methods of working electrodes, the reagents used, the experi¬mental procedures and the instrumentation were the same as those described previously (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992). Rest potentials of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and mild steel were measured individually in 0.05-M sodium sulfate solu¬tions. Combination potentials and galvanic currents of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium were measured in short-circuited two- and three-electrode systems. All poten¬tials in this study are quoted in volts with respect to the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE). A geostatistical approach is proposed for the design of infill drilling programs. The method is consisted of three major steps: developing geological favorability models, delineating mineralization and ore envelopes, and classifying reserves or resources. Geological modeling aims at developing favorable geological zones in which drilling is designed. Modeling mineralization and ore envelopes establishes criteria on potential blocks to be drilled. Top target blocks should be those included within ore envelopes. The framework of resource categories includes five types: probable reserves, indicated reserves, indicated resources, possible resources, and barren. Indicated reserves or resources are the top priority to be drilled for the definition of minable reserves. Possible resources may be considered as targets for further exploration. The algorithms involved in the analysis include indicator favorablity analysis, ordinary kriging, and indicator kriging. A case study presented here involves a gold deposit of Carlin type. The deposit was delineated by a sparse drilling program with 230 feet of average spacing. The infill drilling program designed by the new method suggests a significant reduction on the number of holes from a regular-grid infill drilling pattern.

The evolution of Inco&apos;s Selective Reduction Smelting Process as practised today is described, beginning with the initial laboratory experiments on small samples to the processing of large bulk samples through pilot plant equipment. For both the Guatemalan and Indonesian (Soroako) ores, the initial screening tests using hydro-, vapo-, and pyro-metallurgical processes showed that the latter was the most promising both metallurgically and economically. Later, larger scale tests confirmed the earlier testwork.

"Much of the copper being produced today uses heap leaching, where pure metal is extracted from the ore with a chemical process rather than smelting. This technique is deployed extensively in major copper producing areas including Chile, Peru and the southwestern United States.Copper ore is excavated from the ground, crushed and then spread in uniform layers on a pad. A slow trickle of sulfuric acid is distributed over the pile, where it percolates to the bottom and a collection point. The acid leaches out the copper, along with other minerals, which can be extracted chemically. This process can be used at large sites producing 100 kt/a (110,000 stpy) and greater.Production on a massive scaleProduction at heap-leach sites is continuous and can operate on an enormous scale. The ore is fed into a crusher to break down the large pieces, and then it moves into an agglomerator to capture the fines and create more uniform particles. While in the agglomerator, the ore is mixed with acid for the first time, helping it to bind the fines into larger particles and starting the leaching process. The treated ore moves by conveyors to a stacker designed to spread it uniformly on the pad.The size of the operation comes into perspective by considering a typical pad measures 1.6-km (1-mile) long and 0.8-km (0.5-miles) wide. Working day after day, the stacker creates individual piles or modules on the pad, each 122 x 61 m (400 by 200 ft) and 3 m (10 ft) deep. When one module is filled, it moves across the pad to the next, filling the area in one continuous pile. A completed row of modules spanning the width of the pad is a cell. Once the entire pad is covered, the process begins again laying down another 3-m (10-ft) layer, and it continues until the entire pad reaches its height limit which can be several hundred feet.Once a new module is completed, technicians lay a network of plastic pipes over the surface in a pattern similar to agricultural drip irrigation installations. The diluted sulfuric acid, called raffinate, is pumped through the pipes so it can be distributed over the module, allowing the acid to soak through the ore and leach out copper as it percolates to the bottom. At the same time, approximately 35 to 45 percent of the acid is consumed by dissolving the calcite carrying the metal in the process. The raffinate reaching the bottom is now characterized as pregnant-leach solution (PLS) since it carries the copper the company is seeking to recover."

It is unlikely that improvement in truck efficiency and capacity can fully offset the effects of inflation, fuel cost/shortages, and increasing haul distances as in the past. Therefore, investigations of haulage systems less sensitive to these problems are warranted. Thus, this Bureau of Mines contract research study on alternative continuous haulage systems was prepared. This study identifies the physical, economic, and technological parameters in the application of continuous haulage systems with special attention to under pit slope conveyors and skip hoisting systems. The evaluation data were gathered from extensive literature searches, European/North American mine visits, and industry comments. The study concludes that continuous underground haulage is a viable method within the proper geometric configurations.
