Accurate prediction of the partition coefficients in coal gravity separation is key to improving the preparation efficiency of coal and promoting its clean utilization. In China, the approximate formula method (AFM) has been applied to the calculation of coal gravity separation partition coefficients for decades, but its accuracy is limited. To improve the accuracy of the predicted partition coefficients, and thus the product yield of coal preparation plants, the present study proposes a modified hyperbolic tangent model to derive direct calculation formulas for the heavy medium and water medium separation partition coefficients. Four groups of coal samples were used to verify the accuracy of the direct formulas, and their predictions were compared with those of the AFM. The results showed that the partition coefficients and partition curves predicted by the direct formulas were closer to the actual values than those predicted by the AFM. Further, when the cleaned coal ash content was basically the same, the cleaned coal yield predicted by the direct formula was lower than that predicted by the AFM, and was also closer to the actual value. These results demonstrate that the direct formula produces more accurate results compared to the conventional AFM. As this formula has a reasonable theoretical basis, is simple to apply, and produces accurate results, it is expected to help improve the design and management level of coal preparation plants.

The use of high-efficiency electrical submersible pumps (ESPs) for large scale, open pit mine dewatering operations provides a good example of how technology, products and services from the oil and gas industry can be adapted to the mining industry. In this case, the mine is Goldcorp?s Peñasquito in the Zacatecas state of Mexico, at the Peñasco and Chile Colorado open pit deposits. The technology, products and services are from Schlumberger artificial lift (AL) and Schlumberger industrial water services (IWS). Overview of high-efficiency ESPs This section provides a brief description of the basic components, specifications and operating capacity ranges for the ESPs compared with traditional or conventional dewatering well pumps. This information helps to establish how ESPs provide certain functional and economic advantages over conventional pumps in a mine dewatering application. A schematic of a high-efficiency ESP in an oil and gas (O&G) application is shown in Fig. 1.

Three transportation systems in surface coal mines: 1-Truck Haulage, 2-Belt Conveying, and 3-Coarse-Coal Slurry Transportation are compared from the operations and cost point of Views. Computerized design and cost models were developed and cost data banks were compiled for each system. These models can be used to evaluate transportation systems and layouts that are practiced in most of the U.S. surface coal mines. A typical midwestern area strip mine was considered for illustration purposes. Sensitivity analysis on critical parameters such as production rate, transportation, distance, etc. was conducted and the outcomes are presented.

Bauxite residue (red mud) is an alkaline waste derived from the industrial process for extraction of alumina from bauxite ore. Some bauxite residues contain considerable concentrations of critical metals, for example, rare earth elements. Lithium in red mud was also reported as a potential resource. In the current study, a Li-rich red mud was leached using acetic acid to investigate the leaching behavior of lithium followed by neutralizing with hydrochloric or oxalic acid. By neutralizing red mud using diluted hydrochloric acid (0.01 mol/L), 58.04–60.27% of lithium was leached using 25% acetic acid at 95 °C for 60 min. In the meantime, more than 95% of sodium and 85% of calcium were also dissolved in the leachate solution. While oxalic acid (0.5 mol/L) was used to neutralize red mud prior to acetic acid leaching, lithium performed lower leaching efficiencies (42.41–46.88%) in comparison of using of hydrochloric acid–neutralized red mud. Nevertheless, these leaching efficiencies of lithium were close to that of calcium and much higher than those of sodium under the condition. In this study, 25% (v/v) of acetic acid, at 85 °C for 60 min, was demonstrated as optimum conditions for lithium extraction from oxalic acid–neutralized red mud using acetic acid. The results would be useful and of interest for lithium recovery and purification from red mud.

As openpit copper operations transition from surface mines to underground, the speed of underground infrastructure construction prior to production is critical for maximizing the value of the project. Typically, the preferred underground bulk mining method is block caving. In preparation for future underground projects, Rio Tinto made the strategic decision to invest in a step-change program that would develop system solutions to reduce the construction time of block caves. The program focused on improving safety and doubling or more the construction speed of both vertical shafts and horizontal infrastructure compared to existing drill-and-blast rates. After an extensive selection process, Rio Tinto selected the Atlas Copco mobile miner machine as one of the concepts to proceed with for construction of horizontal infrastructure for access and footprint. In addition to un-derground drilling and hauling equipment, Atlas Copco?s Robbins mobile miner concept (a previous attempt at horizontal mechanical excavation) completed trials at Mount Isa, Pasminco and Taisei. Rio Tinto selected the new Atlas Copco mobile miner machine concept for a number of reasons including the use of proven technology from the three previous mobile miner machines and other commercial products, as well as the ability to install complete ground support typical with high rock stress conditions at approximately 1,500 to 2,000 m (4,900 to 6,500 ft) depth. Atlas Copco, with support from Rowa, the Swiss company that specializes in back up systems for tunnel boring machines (TBM), is advancing the detail design of the access version of a tunneling system on behalf of Rio Tinto. Because of the different requirements between an excavation system for access tunnels and that for tunnels on the footprint, two different versions of the mobile miner machine technology were envisioned. The access and the footprint versions of the Atlas Copco mobile miner machine share a majority of key technologies and systems. Therefore, it was possible to conduct a performance conformation test using a full-scale version of the access machine that would also mitigate the technical risks for the footprint version. Natural sodium sulfate is obtained from both brines and solid deposits. The brines almost always contain other salts with sodium chloride predominating. They may be obtained from surface occurrences, such as Great Salt Lake or from shallow subterranean deposits. Althought many sodium sulfate minerals are known to exist, only three are of commercial significance. These are thenardite, the anhydrous salt; mirabilite, the decahydrate; and glauberite, the double salt of sodium and calcium sulfate. The reader is referred to Weisman (1983) for details on mineralogy and geology of sodium sulfate minerals. Sodium sulfate deposits, either in the form of brine or solid minerals, are found in many parts of the world. Natural sources, by far, provide the primary supply of commercial grades in Canada, Mexico, Spain, and probably in the U.S.S.R., Chile, Argentina, and Turkey. In the United States, production of natural material and synthetic (including by-product) are about equal in volume and have been for many years.

The mineral deposits found in carbonate facies rocks of sedimentary basins include deposits comprised of the country rock itself such as limestone for chemical uses, dolomite for road aggregate, and a variety of other industrial uses of the sedimentary rock. Exploration for new reserves is generally conducted on basis of outcrop investigation, subsurface drilling, and facies change studies while geophysics and geochemistry are not applied. In contrast, rapid development has taken place in the application of both geophysical and geochemical techniques in exploration for stratiform deposits of zinc, lead, barite, and fluorite deposits. This paper will present case histories and show illustrations from such work in the Mid-Continent region. The Metals Division of International Oil & Gas, Inc. has gathered this experience through work over the last three years along the southern margin of the Eastern Interior platform focusing on the states of Arkansas and Tennessee. The exploration work was conducted partially for the Company's own account, partially in joint exploration ventures with mining companies including International Mogul Mines, Ltd., a Canadian company; Bear Creek Mining Company, a subsidiary of Kennecott Copper Corporation; the Mining Division of W. R. Grace and Company, and Boliden-Preussag Exploration, a Swedish-German partnership. We wish to take this opportunity to thank our venture partners for allowing presentation of the various sections of this paper.

It is believed that considerable economic benefit would arise if run of mine (ROM) coal from the underground mines in the Winifrede seam could he enriched before shipment to the preparation plant by partial removal of the shale. Shale could comprise up to 50% of the ROM product. Complete mine-mouth separation is not necessary, but any process must be dry and have high Btu recovery. We have conducted a preliminary analysis of coal/shale mixtures from the Winifrede seam and we find that it is quite possible that a 50-50 ROM mixture of coal and shale could be converted to a 60-40 coal-shale mixture by inspection of individual lumps coming from the mine. The device would consist of a feeder/siever section to deliver the ROM coal > 5 cm (2 in) to an inspection station via a conveyor belt. This inspection station decides if a piece is coal or shale, and if it is shale, activates an air jet to blow shale off of the belt. We have evaluated a dielectric loss technique for the inspection device. The potential advantages of the dielectric loss method are high throughput, low capital cost, and no special handling or licenses would be required. Such a single lump inspection technique is made possible because of advances in high speed electronics and servo systems. This paper provides a summary of our analyses on the Winifrede coal sample, a description of a proposed apparatus to separate coal from shale, some of the experiments needed to demonstrate our ideas.

The abstract discusses the increasing consumption of manganese ores and the need to utilize low-grade ores and rejects. The study focuses on developing a low-cost process using a cupola furnace to recover manganese values from these resources. The process involves smelting ore blends to produce high MnO slag and pig iron. The study investigates various factors to improve iron reduction and separation from MnO-bearing slag. The results show that the process can produce slag with MnO > 35% and Fe(t) < 5% using low-grade Mn ores. The process also achieves Fe reduction between 50 and 70%. The cupola furnace offers advantages like low cost and ease of operation, making it suitable for processing low-grade ores and rejects to produce synthetic MnO-enriched products for various industries.

Although the number of operating longwalls (approximately 100) has remained relatively constant over the last five years, longwall production levels have significantly increased and have in some cases more than doubled. As a result of the increase in production, control of respirable dust continues to be a problem. Therefore, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Pittsburgh Health Technology Center, Dust Division, initiated a study to investigate the availability and adequacy of technology for controlling dust on longwall mining operations. The study involved 23 longwall mining operations in three different Coal Mine Safety and Health Districts. Each operation was visited for a full shift. Respirable dust samples were collected on face personnel and at fixed locations along the face. Parameters in place to control dust were noted with special emphasis being placed on obtaining quantitative data relative to ventilation, headgate dust controls, cutting drum sprays, external machine sprays and cutting sequence. Attempts were made to correlate dust control parameters in place at the time of the visit to dust concentrations measured at the tail, on the tail shearer operator and to the average concentration of dust determined from averaging all the measurements from the occupations sampled. The parameters in place to control dust were also compared to the gamut of technology known to be available to control dust. This paper presents a discussion on the effectiveness of the parameters in place to control dust and on the availability of technology for the control of dust on longwall mining operations.

Kennecott Copper Corporation&apos;s Chino Mines Division concentrator is located in Hurley, New Mexico. Construction of the concentrator was started in 1910 and its capacity was progressively increased over the years to the present nominal 20, 425 t/d of ore (22, 500 stpd). The principal copper minerals present in the ore are chalcopyrite and chalcocite with much of the chalcotite intimately associated with pyrite. Lime is used to depress pyrite, and flotation at a high pH or alkalinity is required for optimum recovery of chalcocite with good rejection of the pyrite. Regrinding is also required to liberate chalcocite-pyrite middling grains. Accurate control of the lime addition is necessary to obtain both optimum metallurgy and minimum lime usage. At low pH levels, flotation cell control is difficult due to excess froth, but excessively high pH levels can go unnoticed because froth characteristics do not change from those experienced at the deisred pH. With manual control of the lime addition, the desired pH can be exceeded for periods of up to two hours. In 1972 a major renovation of the flotation and regrinding circuits was com¬pleted and at that time a new lime distribution and control system was placed in operation. Limestone is obtained from a nearby quarry west of Hurley. The limestone is crushed, sized and fed to a rotary kiln and the quicklime product is stored prior to slaking. The lime is slaked, as required, in a mixing tank-classifier type slaker and the lime slurry is pumped to a concentrator storage tank from which it is distributed through a conventional closed loop system. The current average lime usage rate is approximately 6 kg/t of ore (12 lb per st).

INTRODUCTION Insofar as I am aware, the term rock mechanics was not in the English dictionary in 1930 when I started my graduate program at West Virginia University. Hence, I never thought that I was undertaking studies in rock mechanics when I undertook to write a thesis on the physical properties of West Virginia coal. In this case, the subject was primarily concerned with the compressive strength of coal, the elasticity of the coal, the physical weathering properties of the coal and its friability. These days investigations of rocks pertaining to such properties are included in the term "rock mechanics". Other than this aspect, the principle interest in this part of my program was that I became interested in the strength of coal from the standpoint of structural purposes, and also became cognizant of its elastic properties as well as its energy storing properties. This research also tied in with a remark that Professor Lawall made in a Mining Methods class in 1928 when he remarked that a peculiar thing was happening in the southern part of West Virginia, namely, in the Pocahontas coal field. His remarks were to the effect that pillars were blowing up in the mines and when asked why he replied the cause was not known. The failure of three-inch coal specimens, especially those in stronger coal, in non-hydraulic actuated testing machines was reminiscent of his description of those pillar bursts or bumps.

White Pine Copper Company began operating a plant designed to recover copper matte particles from its discarded reverberatory furnace slags in April, 1972. Seasonal operation, generally the months of April through November, continued through October, 1974, shutting down due to feed exhaustion. White Pine reverberatory furnace slags contained economically recoverable amounts of copper for a variety of reasons. Among them: 1. White Pine concentrates yield extremely high matte grades (65+% Cu) and viscous slags. The viscous slags hinder matte settling causing matte "prill" entrapment in the slag 2. White Pine&apos;s total refined copper output is accomplished through fire refining requiring special techniques for impurity removal, especially small amounts of nickel introduced from purchased pyrite and chalcopyrite fluxes. These special techniques result in high-copper slags, refractory to smelting, being reintroduced into the reverberatory furnace. 3. Furnace bottom build-ups resulting in mechanical matte entrapment through the formation of "dams" hindering matte flow. 4. Occasional concentrate fluxing and furnace atmosphere control problems.

Epithermal gold exploration in the last decade has developed useful models for exploring new ore districts in Oregon. In Eastern Oregon, disseminated gold occurs in epithermal deposits that have been pervasively silicified and brecciated. Many gold prospects staked since 1980 are in fluvial and lacustrine sandstone and conglomerate deposits. Clay alteration products and disseminated pyrite may be present. Vein filling calcite and thin to thick quartz veins are common. Late stage quartz forms pseudomorphs after calcite in many deposits. Arsenic, mercury and gold are geochemically anomolous but silver is usually not. The epithermal deposits are located in part of the Deer Butte Formation or equivalent units. Exploration criteria include the presence of Deer Butte Formation or correlative units and NW structures cut by N-S basin and range structures.

The mobility of gold and silver metals from refractory ores is very low due to free metal ions in their bodies that bind the transportable and free metal molecules or they are encapsulated in minerals such as sulfides, arsenosulfides, carbonaceous, and clayey materials which make it difficult to extract them. As known from the literature, the enrichment of oxide refractory gold, silver ores, Ag, and Au-rich flotation concentrated from sulfur refractory ores can be leached in the chloride-hypochlorite solutions. In this work, the leaching approach was studied to extract silver ions from refractory ores in the presence of hypochlorite media under high pressure. The mineralogical and scanning electron microscopy analysis of the sample indicated that the silver was encapsulated in barite and quartz minerals in fine sizes. In order to obtain the optimum leaching conditions for the silver ore, the effects of several parameters, namely, temperature, leaching time, NaCl and NaOCl concentration, solid ratio, and particle size on the leaching recovery were investigated in detail. The leaching experiments showed that the highest silver recovery of 62.35% was obtained under the following conditions: temperature of 150 °C, oxygen pressure of 1800 kPa, leaching time of 2 h, concentrations of 2 mol/dm3 and 0.4 mol/dm3 for NaCl and NaOCl, respectively, the solid ratio of 30%, and particle size (d80) 15 μm. The results obtained from this study indicated that the enrichment of refractory silver ores to extract the silver encapsulated in barite and quartz minerals could be possible in the chlorite-hypochlorite under high pressure, a relatively shorter leaching time compared to conventional cyanide leaching.

Silver bearing bulk sulfide concentrates from several Peruvian mines were autoclaved in a 19 liter (five gallon) laboratory autoclave in Lima, Peru. Cyanidation of autoclaved concentrates following a hot lime jarosite destruction step extracted over 98 percent of the silver and over 95 percent of the gold. Autoclave operating parameters such as time, temperature, pulp density and autoclaved solids recycle were investigated and reaction rates determined. The problems of excessive heat generation, silver solubility during autoclaving, and formation of pellets containing unreacted sulfides were addressed. The data presented will be used to design a continuous autoclave pilot plant to pro-vide reliable scale up data for a 50 -100 ton per day facility.

In underground mining, rock fragment size is a key variable for productivity because it impacts equipment selection and mining structure design. This study characterizes granular material fragmentation during its flow to understand its characteristics and mechanisms. Tests were conducted using a laboratory setup to emulate various heights where material is drawn. The fragment-size distribution was measured before and after tests for clay, concrete fragments, and gravel. Results showed that fragmentation mainly occurs in minor sizes, with significant increases in fine material as travel distance increases.

For many years tin mining in Bolivia has been very important to the economy of the country. In recent years the tin content of the ore reserves has been steadily declining. An improvement in concentration efficiency is highly desirable in order to increase productivity from the present-low-grade mine ores and to allow retreatment of the many millions of tons of tailings from past operations, some of which equal the present ores in tin content. A number of investigators have been or at present are working on various phases or approaches to the problem. Gravity concentration is used in Bolivia today as it has been in the past to recover tin minerals from the mine ores. An objective of the work reported in this paper was to examine the possibility of treating present low-grade ores and sink-float tailings products, at a relatively coarse grind, in order to produce a higher grade feed material to the present gravity concentration plants. The possibility of using heavy liquids in cyclones to treat large tonnages with a minimum of outlay presented itself and is of particular interest since appropriate heavy liquids are available and with physical properties which lend themselves to simple recovery methods. Tests were carried out using a closed circuit laboratory cyclone assembly. It was desirable to determine the value of using the SG50 concept and Tromp curves for analyzing the cyclone concentration test results. The effects of entrained water on the behavior of ore particles in the cyclone were examined.

Introduction In October of 1961 Texas Gulf Sulphur Company contacted the Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory, of the North Carolina State University, and requested assistance in the development of a phosphate ore body in Beaufort County. The main: objectives of the work at Asheville were defined as follows. The Laboratory should try to determine on the basis of drill core samples, submitted by Texas Gulf Sulphur Company, the highest grade of phosphate concentrate that could be obtained with high recoveries from North Carolina ore, the thickness of the ore body that could be treated economically in one section, and the quantity of concentrate that could be obtained per acre. The results should be compared with data obtained from the treatment of Florida ores. It was important to use mineral preparation methods during the initial laboratory work that could be verified later by continuous pilot plant operation and could be scaled-up for a commercial plant. The writer was in charge of the project at the Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory and participated in the development of one of North Carolina&apos;s greatest mineral resources from the first drill core examination to the production of the first poundage and tonnage quantities of flotation concentrates. The Lee Creek phosphate mine and mill was put in operation in early 1966 and can produce three million tons of phosphate concentrate a year. Sulfuric- acid, and phosphoric acid plant, diamonium phosphate plant and triple super phosphate plants came on stream in 1967; at that time they were the world&apos;s largest. Wet grinding rod mills have been used for 50 years to grind ores and to make specification sand. The application of wet grinding rod mills is well understood. Until recently, there have been very few installations of dry grinding rod mills. The basic principles learned from wet grinding rod mills that were used in the application of dry grinding rod mills are 1. It is possible to extrapolate the performance of 5&apos; and 6&apos; diameter wet grinding rod mills into larger diameter rod mills with the larger mills performing as predicted. Wet grinding rod mills as large as 14&apos; diameter (inside shell) by 20&apos; long using 19.5&apos; long rods are in use operating satisfactorily. 2. Wet grinding rod mills generally grind more efficiently when the fines are left in the mill feed than when the fines are removed from the feed. 3. Wet grinding rod mills produce little tramp oversize and generally can be operated in open circuit except when very close control on the top size in the product is required. When operated in closed circuit, the circulating load is normally less than 100%. 4. The power required for the desired grind can be accurately determined from the work indices obtained from rod mill grindability tests on the material to be ground. Where required it is necessary to, apply inefficiency factors for oversize feed and for larger or smaller than normal- ratios of reduction. Recent applications for rod mills have developed where it is required that dry grinding be used. These recent applications cover the grinding of 1. Lead sinter, lead slag and limestone. 2. Iron ore. 3. Silica for making glass sand. 4. Cement clinker. 5. Coke.
