This study investigated the operating parameters that affect the kinetic dissolution of copper and cobalt from sulfidic ores. The sulfuric acid concentration, temperature, sodium chloride concentration, particle size range, and leaching time were selected to deduce the kinetic mechanism of the leaching reaction. Other parameters, such as a stirring speed of 250 rpm and the percentage solid 10% w/v, remained constant. The results reveal that an increase in acid concentration enhances the leaching rate of copper and cobalt. Copper and cobalt dissolution was positively affected by the addition of sodium chloride. The highest leaching rates of copper and cobalt were 24.71% and 15.65%, respectively. The chemical control and diffusion control by shrinking core models are well fitted as the kinetic models representing the dissolution of the minerals. The respective activation energies for copper and cobalt dissolution of 10.92 and 31.023 kJ mol− 1 for the chemical control and 18.83 and 37.28 kJ mol− 1 for diffusion reaction control were established from temperature-based experiments.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are considered critical minerals for industrial and defense sectors. REEs are not as rare as the word “rare” portrays; yet, the exploitable and/or profitable deposits of REEs may be found only in certain geographical areas. The political and social conditions characterizing these areas may not always be in favor of mining operations. These conditions are imposing the need for extra consideration on the geopolitical constraints prior to any decision-making and before any mining project begins. This study assesses the risk related to mining projects for areas that feature REE deposits based on a geopolitical viewpoint. Probable ranking differences between the current assessment and a 2015 assessment are discussed. The comparative indicators used and the appraisal procedure applied in this comparison are based on a number of different geopolitical indicators. Several ranking changes occurred between 2015 and 2019.

Rare earth elements have important strategic significance and economic value, and the rare earth elements in coal resources have considerable development potential. This study took coal refuse in the Jungar area of Inner Mongolia, China, as the research object, and investigated the occurrence modes of rare earth elements. A special sequential chemical extraction experiment was designed, and the results showed that the rare earth elements in coal refuse mainly occur in silicate and aluminosilicate form, accounting for approximately 65% of the total rare earth elements. According to the results of SEM-EDS, micro morphology of the sample belonged to the lamellar structure of clay minerals, and Al, Si, Fe, S, Y, and La were all present in the sample. Through SPSS software analysis, rare earth elements have an obvious linear positive correlation with Al, Si, and Fe elements, and a negative correlation with S elements. The rare-earth element occurrence mode in coal refuse can provide a definite theoretical basis for the later extraction and enrichment work.

The sample may be a consumer product, an ambient air sample, or a water sample. This determination is complicated by several factors including sample collection and preparation, counting techniques, and the operational definition of asbestos in use. Operating uranium mill tailings containment and mill decommissioning activities are regulated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) through numerous regulatory mechanisms. Reduction of radon emissions from tailings disposal areas, remedial actions to return groundwater to baseline constituent concentrations, and 200-to 1,000-year stabilization of tailings are major focus areas of regulation. The cumulative economic impact and uncertainty associated with regulation are very significant and will hinder future development of uranium milling facilities.

An adequate knowledge of the overall behavior of a rock mass at a given site is fundamental to the satisfactory design of a rock slope. The be- havior is controlled by a variety of factors, in- cluding rock type, geological structure, stress and ground water conditions. There are essentially three lines of approach that may be used to obtain information on the in-situ rock mass behavior for the purpose of the design of a rock slope: (1) Direct measurements of rock mass properties by means ol laboratory and field tests. (2) Evaluation of rock mass properties from a study of slope failure case histories and sta- tistical information on stable and unstable natural rock slopes. (3) Evaluation of in-situ behavior of rock mass by using a physical or mathematical model technique.

The impact of the computer revolution--so pervasive in some industries--has been less startling in the mining industry. Computer techniques have been used successfully to provide drill hole calculations, contour maps, and a variety of conventional maintenance scheduling, and accounting applications. But it is our experience that the real economic payoffs lie in the engineering application of computers to mine planning and the use of systems engineering techniques for mine operations. Since 1964, Newmont Mining Corporation has been engaged in systematic research and development of computer techniques in a variety of mine planning applications. The general objective in using computers has been twofold: first, to arrive at a viable, near-optimum plan for mining a particular orebody, and second, to decrease the financial investment by reducing the man-hours required for mine planning. Three major phases in the evolution of these computer techniques for mine planning are discernible. In phase one, the machine capability for duplicating manual drafting and contour mapping was developed. The necessity of including all recognized geologic characteristics is obvious. Capability for properly incorporating structure, stratigraphic trends, and other geological features was a significant aspect of phase one development.

"The principal role of the geologist is to recognize the existence of phenomena before trying to explain them" - B.M. Keilau, 1825; A. Holmes, 1965 Some important groups of mineral deposits in the layered rocks of orogenic belts or greenstone belts occur in horizons characterized by the presence of exceptional amounts of silica, iron and carbon, with more or less significant amounts of manganese. Generally, the rocks involved are well banded. In practice, these five physical features - four compositional and one geometric - are found with many lithological guises. Iron formation, in the full, modern sense of the term (James, 1954), quartzite, ferruginous quartzite, chert, jasper, "tetsusekiei" (Horikoshi, 1969), tuffaceous jasper ("purple porphyry" - Anderson and Creasey, 1958, p. 36), ferruginous or graphitic shale, argillite, slate or schist, and hematitic tuff are but a few of the more familiar of the names that have been assigned to these rocks. Widely acknowledged and well-documented examples of metallic deposits found in such sediments include concentrations of iron and manganese and stratabound, polymetallic, massive pyritic sulfides. Less familiar examples include occurrences of asbestos (Miles, 1953; and Coetzee, et al., 1976), antimony (Coetzee, 1976), and perhaps stratabound deposits of Au-Cu-U-W-etc., such as Aitik in Sweden (Mining Magazine, 1975; and Nilsson, 1979) and Olympic Dam in South Australia (Roberts and Hudson, 1983). The case of gold is intriguing. An association between gold and iron formation has been identified at several famous deposits and districts, such as Yellowknife, N.W.T. (Morton, 1979), Homestake, S. Dak. (Sawkins and Rye, 1974), Vubachikwe, Zimbabwe (Fripp, 1976) and the Barberton district, R.S.A. (Hammerbeck, 1976). Yet a critical reading reveals the existence of many other hitherto unsuspected examples. The purpose of this note is to draw attention to that omission and the apparent explanation for it. It is not hard to detect the two most probable reasons for the discrepancy between reality and the record.Most occurrences of gold are associated, not with the familiar banded iron formation or interbedded magnetite and chert (technically, the magnetite-banded variety of the oxide facies), but with the enigmatic carbonate, sulfide and silicate facies of iron formation and/or with rocks evidently related to iron formation. All too commonly, the unfamiliar facies of iron formation have been identified by field and mine geologists and not a few researchers as products of regional metamorphism and hydrothermal alteration, as mafic igneous rocks, or as conventional sediments, ie., without regard to their intrinsically ferruginous nature. The justification for these two complementary assertions is largely to be found in the recognition of a characteristic suite of metals and minerals in gold deposits known to be associated with iron formations. Although, from a geological standpoint, a lithological association is more important than a mineralogical assemblage, the latter is the more likely of the two to be diagnostic. This arises from the different natures of mineral and rock classifications, The identification of a mineral or an element is a matter of fact. Owing to the genetic component inseparable from petrographic nomenclature, viz., "igneous": a rock (believed to have been) derived from a melt, the identification of rocks depends on inferences or conclusions about their mode of formation - conclusions that are commonly debatable and, all too often, involve subjective judgements. This is especially prone to be true, if - as at many of the gold occurrences in question - the host rocks have been metamorphosed and/or "altered". In the notes that follow greater weight has accordingly been assigned to elemental and mineralogical than to host rock composition. In other words, if, in a given gold occurrence, the suite of metals and minerals present conforms to the standards of the subject class, whereas the names assigned to host rocks do not, the latter will be viewed as suspect.

Mining claims must have a discovery of a valuable mineral deposit to be valid. When required, a Federal government mineral examiner makes a determination of validity and recommendations thereof to authorized management officials. The examiner should show whether or not an existing mining operation, or a proposed operation have economic viability. This is accomplished through an analysis of legal entities, land status and use, geologic and mineralogic relationships, and mining, milling and processing techniques considered in an appropriate economic evaluation framework. A framework involves market and market entry studies, reserve analyses, all costs analysis, royalty buyouts, tax structure, discount rate of return, and escalation and risk factors. An income approach to value is then used by means of a simple or complex discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis to certify validity. Whether one claim is owned by a single miner, or hundreds of claims are owned by a large corporation, thorough, fair, consistent, and appropriate economic concepts should be applied by the mineral examiner.

13.1-SUBSIDENCE AND GROUND MOVEMENT ROBERT STEFANKO 13.1.1-SUBSIDENCE AND FAILURE This treatment of subsidence and ground movement will be confined to subsidence control for limiting surface damage by assessing the significant parameters affecting ground movements during mining to optimize mining techniques. The material will be equally applicable to evaporite mining as well as coal but will not deal with block caving or similar systems where failure is deliberately induced and surface protection is not necessary or provided. When an underground opening is established, the original equilibrium is disturbed with resultant stress concentrations. While many factors are involved in opening stability, the span (W) undoubtedly is one of the most important factors in failure. Assuming it is relatively small, the overlying rock strata can bridge across the opening and little if any movement or convergence of top and bottom will occur. However, as the span increases, a point is reached where the stress in the overlying rock strata exceeds some strength value of the rock, and the top breaks. If the opening span is limited to some subcritical value (-We) and/or is at great depth (D), a pseudo-arch will form, achielring stability before rupture occurs to the surface. The boundary of this arch is thought to approximate an ellipse in form with the major axis vertical and equal to four times W, although there has been little field research to substantiate this theory. However, if the width of this opening is increased at this horizon to some critical value (W,) or the same span is created in a shallower seam, the overlying strata ill progressively rupture to the surface and the characteristic subsidence trough is formed (Fig. 13-1) The area of the surface affected is much greater than the area of the seam extracted, depending on the "angle of draw" (a), which is the angle between a vertical line from the edge of the opening and another line extended to a point at which subsidence tails out to zero. This angle has been found to be about 35° in Europe but is rather academic, being a function of instrument precision in detecting subsidence. Since the subsidence effect is so small at any point beyond n 25° angle, this latter may be considered the practical limit of subsidence. Further- more, indications are that the angle of draw varies with depth and nature of the strata.' In a field study over a 1,000-ft-deep potash mine in New Mexico, the maximum angle of draw was found to be 51.5°.2 So far, only a single opening has been considered. However, the width of the excavation applies to any complex mining system of entries, rooms and longwalls as long as the seam has been fully extracted and the width represents the distance from one solid rib to another. It will be noted that the amount of vertical displacement varies from point to point on the surface (s), but the maximum subsidence for a given trough occurs at the center (S). This latter value may not he equal to the maximum possible subsidence (Sm) which occurs only if a critical or super- critical (+W,) width has been exceeded (Fig. 13-1). Substantial surface damage can result when subsidence occurs. Factors affecting the amount and type of ground movement are: thickness and properties of the seam, angle of draw, width of excavation, depth and type of overburden, inclinations of strata and surface, and the amount of support left in the gob. The main constituent of the feed to the "Sulphide Section" (31 t/h), in the F. Sartori Plant (6000 tid) of the Miniere di Mon)eponi(Sardinia), is the ore of the Campo Pisano -Funtanaperda Mine (1 ? Difficulties have always been experienced in the treatment of this ore, owing to the extramely fine Pyrite-Sphalerite intergrowth and to the high Pyrite and soluble salts contents. The first mentioned difficulty was overcome with a rather complex flowsheet (see fig.1A and lB)(2); the others with a reagent combination that required a pH of 11 in a pulp loaded with soluble salts. This meant high consumption of alkalizer, and also of the other reagents; furthermore the alkalizer had to be mainly NaOH with only minor amounts of lime, because the latter tended to depress not only the pyrite but also the middlings, which were supposed to float. With dialchylditiophosphate alone as a collector, a lower pH could have been used, but a certain amount of amylxanthate was indispensable to promote flotation of the middlings. On the other hand, a bulk-flotation of sphalerite and pyrite at low pH could not be very advantageous on account of the high pyrite content in the feed(3).

The results of a 2 phase evaluation program designed to determine the amenability of an oxide ore from the Butte, Montana mine of the Anaconda Company to a sulfuric acid leach is presented. In the phase 1 preliminary evaluation, using roll tests and percolation leaching in small columns, it is shown that the ore is highly extractable at low acid consumption ratios. In the phase 2 confirmatory tests in large columns on l-l.5 tons of material, the amenability of the ore to the leaching process is proven and pregnant solution grade profiles from planned commercial heaps established.

Earle Faig Along with other transportation modes, the barge industry will be greatly affected by trends in domestic coal production. Traditionally, coal has been one of the major commodities moved by barge. Now, because of events in the international energy market, coal is finally getting the recognition it deserves as a major component of the country's energy program. Perhaps even more significantly, a series of events has caused other countries to turn to the United States as a source of coal. Although the outlook for coal demand is optimistic, it will be greatly influenced by the ability of the transportation sector to handle the additional traffic. Because of its long experience in moving large quantities of coal, the barging industry is in an excellent position to capitalize on coal's increased popularity. A brief description of the barging industry should facilitate the discussion of coal as it relates to that industry. Barge companies operate on a river system that is over 40 Mm (25,000 miles) long. It includes the East and West Coasts and the Mississippi River System comprised by the Allegheny, Monongahela, Kanawha, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee, Cumberland, Arkansas, Warrior-Tombigbee, and Mobile Rivers, and some smaller tributaries. The Gulf Intracoastal Waterway stretching along the Gulf Coast from Brownsville, TX, to Apalachicola, FL, also is considered part of the inland waterway system. Approximately 1,800 companies operate on the inland river system and have a combined fleet of about 4,400 towboats and 28,000 barges. The fleet of towboats represents 4.8 GW (6.4 million hp) of power. The towboats comprising this fleet vary in size from a small harbor boat to a large line haul boat with 7.5 MW (10,000 hp) of power. The choice of size and power of the boat depends on a number of factors, including the size of the river and operational constraints, such as lock size, river-current rate, and water level. The choice also depends on the tow size. A single tow on a river capable of locking through 15 barges at a time handles up to almost 20 kt (22,000 st), whereas a tow on the lower Mississippi, which has no locks, can accommodate up to 41 kt (45,000 st) of cargo. Because the quality of coal is not typically damaged by exposure to the elements, it is usually moved in open hopper barges, although covered barges are used occasionally. The most frequently used size is the jumbo barge that measures 59 m (195 ft) long by 11 m (35 ft) wide by 4 m (12 ft) deep and can handle up to 1.4 kt (1,500 st) of coal. Advantages of Barge Transportation Barging offers several inherent advantages in transportation of bulk commodities like coal. First, barges can carry large quantities of product. A single jumbo hopper barge can handle 1.4 kt (1,500 st) of cargo while it takes 15 91-t (100-st) capacity rail cars or 57 trucks hauling 24 t (26 st) each to move an equivalent amount of cargo. Thus, barges can move more tonnage with less equipment than competing forms of transportation. Second, barging offers the most fuel efficient means of transportation. Less energy is required to push a load over water than to pull a similar load over land. The amount of pollution attributable to barge traffic is minimal because barges consume less fuel. Third, barging is an inexpensive form of transportation. The inland waterway industry transports about 12% of the nation's freight for about 2% of the total freight bill. This can be attributed to competition between the large number of companies on the river system and competition with other transportation modes. Fourth, barging is an environmentally safe method of transportation. Inland river routes expose fewer urban areas to hazardous substances than rail or truck. And barge spills occur less frequently than rail or truck spills. The industry does pose some disadvantages. The waterway system is constrained by the natural river network, so barges cannot travel on the most direct straight-line route. This means that barging is usually an incomplete form of transportation requiring interface with truck or rail. The industry's market is limited to those geographical areas that are located on or near the rivers. In addition, it is a time-consuming transportation mode, making it impractical for many types of commodities.

The mining industry generates an estimated 2.3 billion tons of solid waste each year and the total accumulated mineral resource solid waste at both active and inactive mine sites, approaches 30 billion tons. Five industries generate 85 percent of mine solid waste: copper, phosphate, iron, uranium, and coal. Over the past several years, the Federal government has shown increasing interest in the proper disposal of solid wastes generated by the mining industry. Three new pieces of federal legislation have been passed recently beginning with the most comprehensive regulatory authorization passed in 1976, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) which has been amended to the Solid Waste Disposal Act Amendments of 1980. RCRA is implemented and enforced by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and intended to control municipal and industrial solid wastes. Next came the passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) of 1977 which is implemented and enforced by the Department of Interior to control coal surface mining and the surface effects of underground coal mining, and finally, the recent Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act (UMTRCA) of 1978 implemented by EPA and enforced by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to control uranium mill tailings disposal.

INTRODUCTION The problems involved with moving millions of tons of rock are being addressed by nationally recognized tunnel contractors who have converged in Chicago over the past 5 years. This wealth of expertise has been needed to meet the risk and challenge of constructing the world's largest network of underground tunnels which in turn has required a dramatic advance in the art and science of tunneling. These pioneers, through innovation, adaptation, and hard work, have eliminated the one major concern of The Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago - how to move 8 million tons of rock. The Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago (MSDGC) serves 122 municipalities covering 866 square miles in Cook County, Illinois. Of these cities, towns, and villages, 53 have combined sewer systems. On an average of once every four days, these systems overflow about 4 million gallons of combined sewage and rainwater into the area's rivers and canals. The overflows occur at approximately 640 outfall locations of which 10% are owned by the MSDGC, with the remainder of the points belonging to various other municipal bodies. All those who own these "point" sources of pollution are in violation of Illinois State and Federal regulations. To enable its member municipalities to come into compliance with State and Federal law, the MSDGC is implementing its Tunnel And Reservoir Plan (TARP). TARP is a regional solution to the problem of combined sewer overflow in the metropolitan Chicago area. "In this paper, recent progress with respect to the flotation chemistry of soluble salt minerals is reviewed, and some of the more relevant issues including the hydration states of ions, the interfacial phenomena of salt surfaces and the flotation behavior of selected soluble salts are discussed. Due to the high solubility, the flotation of most soluble salts has to be carried out in their saturated brines. Anecdotal evidence has suggested that the hydration states of the ions have significant influence on the physicochemical properties of the solutions, the surface charge and wetting characteristics of the minerals, the collector adsorption states and, further, the flotation behavior of the soluble salts. In this regard, reviewing past research findings, efforts are made to establish a correlation between the ion hydration states with the flotation behavior of the soluble salts. Further, advances in understanding the significance of colloid adsorption involved in the soluble salt flotation process are addressed, and future research efforts to understand the soluble salt flotation chemistry are suggested.IntroductionSoluble salt minerals are essential raw materials for the production of a variety of commodities, fertilizers, potassium hydroxide, soda ash, magnesium compounds and other chemicals. These soluble mineral resources can be processed using flotation technology and, currently, more than 80% percent of the world’s potash is produced by the selective flotation of KCl crystals (sylvite) from other salt crystals, predominately NaCl (halite) and other more complex salts (Searls, 1990). Despite the successful application of flotation technology in the potash industry, the mechanisms for collector adsorption on soluble salts have not yet been fully understood and, therefore, have been of considerable interest to flotation researchers for many decades."

A low-grade cassiterite-magnetite ore from Sichuan province, China, is finely disseminated, assaying 0.39% Sn and 23.20% Fe, respectively. Mineralogy studies show that the fine-sized cassiterite is mainly disseminated in iron minerals and gangue. Moreover, the embedded size of cassiterite is very fine and must be ground to -0.01 mm to achieve a degree of liberation of about 90%. Therefore, fine grinding needs to be conducted to get a high quality tin concentrate and a great loss of tin cannot be avoided when treating the ore by gravity concentration. Based on the above facts, a two-stage separation, with a low intensity magnetic separator and a shaking table, was selected to test the ore. Compared with other similar plants, a relatively good separation has been achieved. Three acceptable products for smelters were obtained as following: iron concentrate assaying 61.69% Fe with a recovery of 75.09%, tin concentrate assaying 27.21% Sn with a recovery of 56.97% and a sulfur concentrate assaying 40.86% S with a recovery of 32.03%, respectively.
