Acknowledging this, and with the goal to optimize production at a minimum investment, one can use existing equipment, modify the process flow and make a few strategic capital investments. Automatic setting regulation is a technology that allows balanced crusher performance matching minute changes in feed material characteristics. The system makes it possible to utilize the crushers fully at all times. It also continuously and completely compensates for manganese liner wear.

Author?s note: Diversity in practice exists in the application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for purchase price allocations with respect to the recognition of Value Beyond Proven and Probable Reserves or VBPP, as defined by the Emerging Issues Task Force (EITF) in EITF 04-3: ?Mining Assets: Impairment and Business Combinations?. This diversity appears to arise from differing interpretations of what constitutes sufficient information to value components of VBPP in business combinations. Concerned with this diversity in practice, respected members of the mining community formed a working group which prepared an issues paper that discussed this diversity and provided recommendations for recognition and valuation of VBPP in business combinations. The working group then submitted this paper to the EITF, requesting further guidance be issued on the concept of VBPP. In conjunction with the submission to the EITF, the working group also provided this paper to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for review and comment. The EITF discussed this issue at its May, 2008 agenda committee meeting. However, it declined to add this topic to the EITF agenda for further consideration. Absent additional guidance on VBPP from the EITF, the working group submitted a proposed definition of VBPP to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for its consideration. The following article, which is consistent with the issues paper that was submitted to the EITF and the SEC, discusses the components of and valuation techniques for VBPP. The correspondence with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, which includes the proposed definition of VBPP by the working group, is attached as Appendix 1 to this article.

Petrographic analysis of rocks is traditionally performed with optical microscopy using thin sections and point counting. However, this does not provide accurate mineral proportions for sedimentary, volcanic, and soil-like material, because rock fragments, groundmass, and matrix are not identified as specific minerals. In addition, groundmass phases in volcanic rocks can be too fine to identify individually, and making thin sections of intact soil-like material is difficult because much of the material is not well cemented. ModAn is a normative calculation that estimates modes ??by applying Gaussian elimination and multiple linear regression techniques to simultaneous mass balance equations? (Paktunc, 2001) and allows location-specific mineral compositions to be used. One of the features of ModAn that makes it appropriate for this study is that it can model one of several sulfide minerals. Mineral compositions for Questa minerals were determined from electron microprobe analysis and entered into ModAn. Then by combining and normalizing results, bulk quantitative mineralogy can be determined using ModAn, petrographic observations, electron microprobe analysis, clay mineral analysis, and the whole-rock chemistry of the sample.

Vision 21 is a government/industry/academia cost-shared partnership to develop the technology basis for integrated energy plants that will, early in the 21stcentury, result in the deployment of ultra-clean plants that produce electricity and “opportunity” products. Vision 21 plants will use fossil fuel feed-stocks in combination with other domestic resources, e.g., biomass, municipal waste, and petroleum coke. Opportunity products could include transportation fuels, steam, high-value chemicals, synthesis gas, and hydrogen. Performance targets for Vision 21 plants, example plant configurations, and the key technologies that will be needed are described.

The objective of flotation models is to predict the recovery rate of minerals from a flotation cell. In this paper a CFD?based flotation models is presented. The model uses first order rate equation, and the collision frequency is estimated using Abrahamson [1] model with input from CFD two-phase simulations. Spatial distributions of dissipation rate and air volume fraction (also called void fraction) are determined by the two-phase hydrodynamic simulations. Knowing these parameters throughout the machine is essential in understanding the effectiveness of different components (rotor, stator or disperser, jets) on the flotation efficiency. Not only the average pulp recovery rate can be estimated but also the regions of high/low recovery rate can be identified. The CFD-based flotation model presented here can be used to determine the dependence of recovery rate constant at any locality within the pulp on particle diameter, particle specific gravity, contact angle, and surface tension.

Two complex copper concentrates and one arsenical nickel concentrate were oxidized in simulated flash smelting conditions using a laminar-flow furnace. The concentrates contained tetrahedrite as Sb-bearing mineral and arsenopyrite and gersdorfite as As-bearing minerals. At high temperatures and low oxygen potentials, Sb tended to vaporize, but with high oxygen potentials it was captured in mixed oxide phases with copper and iron. Arsenic was found to follow antimony in copper concentrates, although with less sharp contrast between low and high oxygen potentials. In the nickel concentrate studied, arsenic was found to vaporize from the gersdorffite particles and, subsequently, condense on the other particles.

Introduction A subject long debated but rarely resolved involves the interaction between the academic community and industry in the sponsorship and conduct of research. The subject is, unfortunately, too often treated as a controversy involving ethics and the profit motive. But, in fact, the two branches of society - industry and academia - are necessarily part of the same system. In the last 25 years, the realization has developed that research alone is not sufficient to bring about use of those results to benefit society through productivity gains and economic growth. The flow of events shown in Fig. 1 was generally believed to be the steps required for reaping the benefits of research. Today, research still has the very important role of creating new information or new ideas. However, it is recognized to be but one of many steps in a process that we now refer to as technological innovation. Charpie (1967) said, "Technological innovation is the driving force behind economic growth in the US. In this context, innovation means the process by which a new idea is successfully translated into economic impact within our own society, by providing better products, and simultaneously creating new jobs in the manufacturing of those products. Only after an investigation is put into sufficient use to have an economic effect, is it termed an innovation." One of the best depictions of the technological innovation process is shown in Figs. 2 and 3. These are adapted from Haeffner (1975), and modified by the Committee on Mineral Technology of the National Research Council (1981). Figure 2 identifies the many steps involved in the process. It designates a generalized form for interaction between the academic community and industry. Figure 3 identifies the steps in the "innovation activity" box of Fig. 2. Academia is generally responsible for developing of new knowledge and ideas, as well as maintaining and enlarging the collected body of scientific knowledge. Industry is responsible for developing new products, methods, and processes. Both institutions operate for the benefit of society, but under different driving forces. An assessment of U.S. western hard-rock miners? noise exposures was conducted as part of a multi-year National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) survey of noise exposures in each sector of the mining industry. Noise from selected mining equipment and operator noise exposures were measured, analyzed, and tabulated for dissemination to the participating sites and are being used to direct NIOSH research and interventions to address the greatest noise hazards. Eighty-two noise dosimeter measurements were obtained, along with time-motion studies as the miners operated hard-rock mining machines. Ninety-six percent of the operators had daily noise doses that exceeded the Mine Safety and Health Administration?s permissible exposure level. The average gold miner dosages while operating the following equipment were: haul trucks - 261%, load-haul-dumps (LHDs) - 235%, single boom drills - 221%, bolters - 214%, and dual boom drills - 163%. The worst exposure level was a silver miner with a daily dose of 873%. Time-motion data showed that this miner?s exposure accumulated most rapidly while operating a jack-leg drill. These results will be used to help prioritize noise control development by NIOSH and other partners. To preserve Washington Group International's quality of service in the mine operations area, the company has established a Supervisor Training Program to provide all levels of supervision with the required skills to meet objectives and guarantee consistent, excellent performance for each of our projects. A need developed to establish this training program internationally. The first international training session was held at the APEX San Cristóbal Mine in Bolivia. This paper discusses the program’s development, execution, results, and lessons learned with an emphasis on multicultural environments.

The ST separator utilizes electrical charge differences between materials produced by surface contact or triboelectric charging. When two materials are in contact, material with a higher affinity for electrons gains electrons and thus charges negative, while material with lower electron affinity charges positive. This contact exchange of charge is universally observed for all materials, at times causing electrostatic nuisances that are a problem in some industries. Electron affinity is dependent on the chemical composition of the particle surface and will result in substantial differential charging of materials in a mixture of discrete particles of different composition. In the ST separator (Figures 1 and 2), material is fed into the thin gap 0.9 ? 1.5 cm (0.35 -0.6 in.) between two parallel planar electrodes. The particles are triboelectrically charged by inter-particle contact. For example, in the case of coal combustion fly ash, a mixture of carbon particles and mineral particles, the positively charged carbon and the negatively charged mineral are attracted to opposite electrodes. The particles are then swept up by a continuous moving open-mesh belt and conveyed in opposite directions. The belt moves the particles adjacent to each electrode toward opposite ends of the separator. The electric field need only move the particles a tiny fraction of a centimeter to move a particle from a left-moving to a right-moving stream. The counter current flow of the separating particles and continual triboelectric charging by carbon-mineral collisions provides for a multi-stage separation and results in excellent purity and recovery in a single-pass unit. The high belt speed also enables very high throughputs, up to 40 tonnes per hour on a single separator. By controlling various process parameters, such as belt speed, feed point, electrode gap and feed rate, the ST process produces low carbon fly ash at carbon contents of 2 % ± 0.5% from feed fly ashes ranging in carbon from 4% to over 30%.

Research is currently being conducted at the Colorado School of Mines in the use of high-pressure water for scaling down loose rocks in underground mine openings. In addition to improved miner safety, the adhesion strength of shotcrete applied to rock surfaces treated with high-pressure water is also increased significantly resulting in improved overall support capabilities of the shotcrete layer. Test results show an increase in adhesion strength by a factor of four on a concrete test wall cleaned with water at 21 Mpa (3000 psi) as compared to a surface cleaned at 0.7 Mpa (100 psi).

Innovations in communications and real-time information systems are providing industry opportunities to improve profitability. Real-time operating data is collected from equipment across a site or even several sites into a central server for secure PC and PDA-based Internet access. This paper includes discussion of how operating staff can use wireless devices to see equipment and processing data from anywhere throughout the mines and concentrators, and how management can view results from multiple mines, all in real time. Additional opportunities enabled through the remote access by equipment vendors or mining consultants is also presented, as well as an overview of typical benefits and current installations.

This paper presents the results of column flotation of a fine feed sample of Florida phosphate. A central composite design is used to study the main and interaction effects of parameters affecting column efficiency. The statistical design is also used to determine the optimum conditions. The results indicate that, depending on the experimental conditions, it is possible to achieve a concentrate of high grade and recovery. A concentration of 15 ppm of non-ionic frother is found to be enough to maximize the recovery at the pH of 9.5.

During late 2010, a scientifically founded water spray system was developed for continuous miners (CM) (Patent Pending) that reduces respirable dust exposure for miner operator by about 30%. It includes engineered sprays around the cutting drum, outer bit-ring sprays, chassis sprays and side cutter boom sprays. About 3.6 ? 4.5m (12-15 ft) behind these sprays is additional sprays that spatially cover the area between the CM chassis and the mine roof and ribs. The spray system uses approximately the same volume of water as currently used on CMs with similar operating pressures. An Illinois mine decided to implement these concepts on a CM during rebuild stage. Dust control performance of the rebuilt CM was evaluated using gravimetric sampling and real-time monitoring using multiple personal dust monitors (PDMs). The average results based on about 105 cuts show about 30% and 20% reduction in dust exposure for the miner operator, and the haulage unit operator. Visibility in the mining areas was also significantly improved. The coal company has already decided to implement the system on all their CMs.

The need for yieldable ground support, particularly in high stress or deep mining conditions, has grown in recent years. This paper highlights some of the current industry limitations and provides selection criteria for a new yielding ground support system, DSI?s Dynatork Bolt. This bolt distinguishes itself by withstanding 16 ? 30 kJ of energy deflecting loads anywhere from 7 ? 20 tons (depending on the energy). A summary of the laboratory test results and case studies will also be presented as a measure of the performance of this dynamic product.

The reverse cationic flotation is the most widely utilized flotation method for concentrating iron ore. In such a process quartz is often floated with ether amines (R?O(CH2)3?NH2) partially neutralized with acetic acid. However, it is well known that the cationic flotation of hematite does not work well if a certain amount of slime is present in ore slurry. To improve flotation performance, starch is often added to the flotation feed to selectively flocculate and depress the iron minerals and sodium silicate is used to disperse the silica gangue. The present study was conducted to improve the flotation efficiency of iron ore flotation by use of a new type of depressant for clay and iron minerals, i.e., GP clay binder. It is postulated that the GP clay binder minimizes slime adsorption on quartz and hematite particles by agglomerating clay particles to reduce their surface area. It is further theorized that the clay binder helps depress hematite flotation due to its unique chelating ability to iron ion. The results from this study clearly show that the GP clay binder is an effective depressant in iron ore flotation. When it was used as a substitute for corn starch, it increased concentrate grade from 60.78% to 67.67% and increased iron recovery from 71.96% to 72.90%. The combined use of GP clay binder with corn starch produced even better flotation performance, increasing concentrate grade to 67.08% and iron recovery to 78.15% simultaneously. In the early 1990’s the British Columbia (Canada) mineral industry frequently discussed the need to participate in, and compromise with, public environmental interests in order to ascertain long-term stability. However, as the decade progressed the mineral industry withdrew from almost all meaningful public participation. As government protected areas policy in the past year has illuminated, there is a continued need for long-term land access stability. This paper historically analyses the public engagement policies of the British Columbian mineral industry while it participated in long-term consensus-based multi-stakeholder land-use planning processes. From this analysis the paper recommends that the mineral industry reengage the public and institute a new working relationship with environmental advocacy groups so as to ensure British Columbia becomes the most sustainable mineral producing jurisdiction in the world.
