Highwall mining is an important surface coal mining method, and it may account for approximately 4% of total U.S. coal production. Highwall stability is the major ground control related safety concern. Ground control plans for highwall mining should specify hole width, web pillar width, barrier pillar width and number of holes between barriers. This paper offers simple design charts for these parameters aimed at providing “ball park” checks. Web pillars containing pre-existing auger holes are analyzed and a design chart for estimating their minimum width is also presented. Finally, close proximity multiple seam highwall mining, which may have caused several serious highwall failures, is analyzed. Web and barrier pillar recommendations for this special situation are presented.

There has been a continuous interest in chemical aids for processing Canadian oil sands by hot water extraction process since the first commercial industry operation in 1967. Several inorganic and organic chemical systems have been introduced, of which sodium hydroxide is the most widely used extraction process aid by major producers. Use of NaOH, however, results in accumulation of sodium ions in recycled water, causing higher clays dispersion and producing tailings with poor geotechnical properties that turn into mature fine tailings. This is especially true for low grade and oxidized ores, which present the greatest challenges in bitumen recovery and produce the major portion of fine tailings. In this paper, we are presenting a novel method based on use of inorganic polymers as process aids for various low grade oil sands ores. Denver flotation cell and a laboratory scale hydrotransport loop were utilized to evaluate the effect of chemical dosage and operating parameters on the processability of oil sands samples from Athabasca region. Process tailings were examined for properties such as water chemistry, suspended solids, settling rate and the ease of tailing treatments. Our results demonstrate that the use of inorganic polymers during the froth process lead to a significant improvement in bitumen recovery from low grade oil sands and can improve further tailing treatments. This offers a viable solution that can be easily incorporated into current processing facilities and deliver several operational and economical benefits. Advantages in use of inorganic polymers versus sodium hydroxide are presented in details.

Traditionally (with a few exceptions) tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have been utilized on tunnel projects where the risks associated with deep tunnels (rock burst, squeeze, etc) are low (or expected to be low). This has generally been due to the extremely adverse consequences of entrapping or damaging a TBM under such conditions; but also due to the relative difficulty of dealing with these ground conditions in the confined working area of a TBM, in comparison to a drill and blast heading. This paper review the constraints of operating a TBM in a deep tunnel and discusses related project experience, particularly recent and current experience with TBMs in the deep Alpine Base Tunnels. Potential future applications of TBMs in the development of large, deep underground mines are also discussed.

Continuous operating performance and high profit is one of the major concerns in the mining industry. Information systems are expected to reinforce and enable conformance to these requirements. The companion efforts of business management and production information systems press for tighter integration to avoid over-laps, multiple instances of similar data, and expensive maintenance of databases. Implementation of advanced intelligent systems throughout a mine operation can reduce costs, optimize investment and create a shorter payback via conversion of the data accumulated by field and process devices into information, and subsequently, into decisions. However, in order to harness the potential power inherent in these intelligent devices, adequate and flexible modular knowledge-based solutions are required. Fortunately, there has been at least one such practical response to this challenge, namely the ABB IndustrialIT portfolio. With these tools in place, production efficiency is reached via integration of process, production, and quality information. Moreover, they permit immediate detection and remedial action to changes to process and boundary condition variables. Finally, using advanced optimization techniques supported by dedicated mathematical models, they allow for economic process optimization (process set points and coordination thereof, energy management, production planning, energy supply contract optimization, etc) of the plant as a whole.

INTRODUCTION The slurry shield method was developed in Japan in 1963 and its experimental tunnelling work was performed in 1965. Although the history of this method is short compared with the conventional shield method in Japan, many companies such as Tekken Construction, Okumura Gumi, Nishimatsu Kensetsu, etc. are engaged at present in developing their own unique system of the slurry shield method. The ground of Japan is generally pervaded with ground water and a large number of districts are covered with soft ground, which is composed of fine sand, silt and clay, etc. Therefore, the conventional shield method has always used compressed air with various kinds of auxiliary methods. However, with this method there have been experienced numerous troubles such as ground settlements, lowering of ground water, oxygen shortage within the tunnel, and so forth. The slurry shield method has been developed with the above background. In recent years remarkable progress has been made from the engineering viewpoint in applying this method to driving various kinds of tunnels such as road tunnels, subways, water supply and sewer tunnels, and other tunnels. Apart from Japan, the slurry shield process using bentonite is carried out in England and Germany. The National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) program since 1974 has been designed to accomplish a comprehensive coverage of the 48 conterminous States and Alaska to evaluate the total uranium resources of the USA. This resource base includes both ore reserves and potential resources. Techniques include airborne radiometric and magnetic surveys, by hydrogeochemical surveys, surface and subsurface geologic studies, and the application of improved geochemical exploration and resource assessment methods (Table 1). In brief review, the current status of each of the five basic NURE elements is as follows: In the Aerial Surveys, in the conterminous 48 states, the flying has been completed in 89 of the NTMS 10 x 2° NURE quadrangles, and is in progress in 39 more (Figure 1). Complete quadrangle data have already been open filed for 46 additional quadrangles, for a total of 174 for which data gathering is either complete or in progress. In Alaska, the flying is complete in 42 quadrangles, and quadrangle data have been open filed for 34 more, for a total of 76 (Figure 2).

Precast concrete segmental lining systems have been gaining widespread use in seismically active areas and a single-pass version of such a system has been developed for use on the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit (SVRT) Project in San Jose, California. The response of tunnel linings to seismic shaking is often predicted using engineering judgment, elastic closed-form solutions and numerical modeling. Such analyses generally assume a continuous structural system and hence do not explicitly model the behavior of the jointed segmental lining. A number of analyses were performed to predict radial and circumferential joint behavior during seismic ovaling and wave propagation. These analyses included a complex, three-dimensional finite element based ground-structure interaction model that incorporates inelastic constitutive soil behavior, cracked concrete properties and no-tension, frictional segment joint surfaces. The paper discusses the results of the analyses and provides guidelines for the design of precast systems in zones of high seismicity.

Elevation of surface charge density on colloidal particles in the presence of a high potential electrostatic field is demonstrated as a viable technique for preventing the accumulation of solids in solvent extraction circuits. The effect of the technique is manifest by relative turbidity measurements between pregnant leach solution and raffinate, by changes in the character of the sludge accumulations, by alteration of the zeta potential of particulates, and by a general reduction in the mass of solids.

The use of cyanides in the extraction of gold and silver is well known.1 Such extractions employ con¬centrations of cyanide in the range of 0.02-0.25 % sodium cyanide equivalent in leaching cycles of 24-48 hours and frequently longer. Copper minerals, even though minor components of precious metal ores, dissolve in these cyanide leaching solutions, consume cyanide, cause fouling of mill solutions, and thus interfere with the precipitation and recovery of gold and silver. 2,3,4 This paper presents a summary of laboratory investigations on the use of cyanide solutions as extractants for copper from various copper-bearing ore fractions. In view of the metal contents involved, it will be apparent that larger quantities of cyanide are required to extract copper than for the extraction of precious metals. In cyanide solutions of concentrations generally favorable to copper extraction, sulfide and oxide copper minerals were found to dissolve rapidly at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. For example, on products in the flotation size range, the major portions (e.g. 65-85%) of the extractable copper frequently dissolved in 2-10 minutes. At coarser grinds, e.g. 100% minus 28 mesh and 100% minus 10 mesh, 75-85% of the total copper was extracted in 30 minutes.

Resource Engineering and Development, Inc. is desigining and building a portable 150 to 225 tpd, flotation-cyanide leach plant with unitized, skid-mounted components. This plant design, with its portability, low capital investment, and high recovery of silver and gold from many partially oxidized ores, is well suited to treat many small, highgrade deposits, old waste dumps, and old mill tailing piles. A description is given of flotation and/or cyanide leach tests run on 18 partially oxidized, newly mined ores; waste dump materials; placer slimes; and old mill tailings.

Although geostatistical techniques have been widely accepted as the standard methods for reserve calculations in the mining industry, the production data of many mines frequently differ from geostatistical estimations based on exploration and development drilling. The discrepancies in recovered metal amounts, commonly in the range between 10% and 30%, are related to different factors. Major causes vary from mine to mine. A common cause, however, is the ignorance of important geological constraints in reserve modeling. Three major factors appear to be related to such an unfortunate fact: 1) modelers are over-confident on geostatistical techniques, 2) it is difficult to establish geological models, and 3) mine schedules are too tight to allow detailed geological modeling work. Defining mineralization envelopes has been a major effort in geological modeling. Past experiences have showed that geological modeling is much mo~ demanding than the choice of sophisticated kriging estimators. Since building envelopes for complex ore bodies can be extremely tedious and time-consuming, computerized approaches are badly needed for mine modelers. A comprehensive procedure reported here is referred to as probability-assigned constrained kriging (PACK), which includes a built-in method for defining 3-d mineralization envelopes. The modeling technique is fast and accurate for complex precious metal deposits. The technique is demonstrated on a gold deposit. The estimation results are compared with blast-hole based production panels, showing that the estimated tonnage is 2.2% larger than the actual production and the average grade is 2.6% lower.

INTRODUCTION The Point Lepreau nuclear generating station was constructed in the late 1970's and early 1980's by the New Brunswick Electric Power Commission. Point Lepreau is a small peninsula on the north shore of the Bay of Fundy, about 55 km west of St. John, New Brunswick. Cooling water for the plant was to be obtained from and discharged into the Bay of Fundy by the system of shafts and tunnels illustrated in Fig. 1. The design engineer for the cooling water system was Albery, Pullerits, Dickson and Associates, Ltd., Toronto. Ferrera-Resco Ltd, Windsor, Ontario, was contractor for construction of the cooling water shaft and tunnel system, which was done between 1976 and 1979. The senior author was project manager for Ferrera-Resco, the junior author served as consultant to Ferrera-Resco on evaluation of certain geotechnical questions which arose during construction. SITE CONDITIONS Geology Except for limited overburden soils at the onshore shaft sites, the tunnels and shafts were constructed entirely in Triassic conglomerate, sandstone, and siltstone, with some shale interbeds. The bedding strike averaged about N6°E, The dip was to the west at about 30° along the Discharge Tunnel and 40° along the Intake Tunnel. Rock along the Intake Tunnel was mostly sandstone and siltstone and more thinly bedded, with RQ D generally in the range of 50 to 60%. Rock along the Discharge Tunnel tended to be coarser sandstone and conglomerate and more thickly bedded, with higher RQ D averaging about 80%. In 1992, a detailed inspection of the Southfield Sewer revealed a reach of approximately 0.8 kilometers in length, located directly below the freeway lanes, which was severely distressed. Failure of this section of the sewer would result in the closing of the busiest roadway in the state as well as the potential backup of sewage into homes and spilling into nearby surface waters. As such, repair of the distressed section required development of a procedure that would not jeopardize the conveyance of flow through the existing sewer nor impede travel on the overlying freeway. Based on these constraints, the DWSD and NTH team developed a repair concept that entailed the mining of a new, 3.05-meter (10-foot) diameter bypass away from the traffic lanes. The new bypass section was connected to the existing sewer, up stream and down stream of the distressed area, using a “top down” construction approach, that required only minimal freeway closures during weekend periods. This paper, prepared jointly by the Owner, Consultant and Contractor will describe existing conditions, design considerations and construction methods.

Ten years ago, only 3% of Consol's underground coal production resulted from using the longwall mining method. Today, that figure has grown to 45% and has helped the Pittsburgh-based concern fuel an upswing in productivity. The company reported that productivity at its underground mines, excluding labor strike periods, increased 24% between 1978 and 1981. Last year, an additional 8% increase was achieved. Efforts such as improved safety, training, engineering, and maintenance programs as well as the closing of unproductive mines has contributed to these gains, according to Joseph M. Richards, Consol's executive vice president of operations. But, Richards adds, a great part of the credit goes to longwall mining. What is Longwall Mining? To fully appreciate the advantages of longwall, one needs an understanding of how mining is done by other methods. For instance, in both conventional and continuous mining, rooms or tunnels are dug in the coal seam. Pillars of coal are left standing to support the roof as mining moves forward in the seam. In conventional mining, a slot is cut in the base of the seam and holes for blasting are drilled. After blasting, the coal is loaded. A more efficient method - continuous mining - uses a machine that combines cutting and loading. Longwall mining, by contrast, works backwards from the end of a panel. Two parallel sets of tunnels (development panels) are cut into a seam with continuous mining machines, then connected with a set of crosscuts at the far end. Min¬ing then proceeds back toward the entrance. Longwall mining employs some very productive machines. Large drum shearers, for example, run on a track along the length of the coal face for some 150-180 m (500-600 ft). The shearers cut the coal which falls onto a conveyor system or pan that also runs the entire length of the face. The longwall crew works under a roof of heavy steel supports called shields. As the coal is removed, shearers, pans, and shields are moved forward by hydraulic rams. The roof is allowed to collapse behind the shields. In addition to increasing production, longwall mining is considered to be safer because the miners work under strong steel shields. New designs have made them more rugged and maintenance free, as well as more stable on soft mine floors. Early roof supports, called chocks, had gaps in the roof canopies. The new roof shields now cover the entire working area and are better able to prevent roof material from falling into the working area, thereby improving safety and productivity. The Oatman District produced approximately 2.2 x 10 6 ounces of gold and 0.8 x 10 ounces of silver between 1897 and 1942. A total of 3.8 x 10 tons of ore averaging 0.58 O/T gold and 0.17 O/T silver was extracted from eight major orebodies and a number of lesser deposits. Oatman lies at the center of a trachyte-latite-rhyolite volcanic complex which contains at least one resurgent caldera. The orebodies are typical epithermal quartz-calcite + adularia lode deposits which are very deficient in sulfur. Ore deposition has occurred within dilatant zones on faults which radiate from a common point within-the complex. Fischer-Watt Mining approached the Oatman District with an integrated exploration program utilizing four basic procedures to define the characteristics of past productive areas the results of which were applied to unexplored portions of the vein system. These procedures, listed in their order of usefulness, in defining known and prospective mineralized zones are: vein contouring, detailed alteration mapping, fluid inclusion temperature determinations, and geochemical sampling.

Underground mine development begins with the positive investment decision to mine and ends with the inception of full-scale exploitation. It incorporates all activities, personnel, and equipment required for creation of underground access to a mineral deposit. Because of the depletion of near-surface mineral resources, the reduced mobility of large surface mining equipment, increasingly stringent environmental constraints, and the introduction of promising innovations to rock penetration and rock excavating equipment (e.g., continuous miners, rock borers), under-ground mining is projected to account for an increased share of worldwide mineral production in the foreseeable future. Without proper engineering during the mine development phase, failure of the underground mining project is axiomatic. A frustration attendant to coverage of the complex area of underground mine development lies not only with the need for treatment of the many disparate specialties within the area but even with the lack of systematization of these specialties in what is recognized as a vital precursor to successful mining. Public Law (PL) 95-87 contains explicit demands for land use planning in its reclamation and designation sections. Both sections require recognition of local land use plans; however, they are not well integrated. Accommodation to these planning requirements affords an opportunity to create better links among local land use planners, the state's permitting authority and designation office, and mine designers. Mining companies should take a more positive interest in local land use plans and in resource inventories. States should consider handing down to local government the responsibility for accepting mine permit applications and designation of unsuitability petitions.

Addition of Kastone® peroxygen compound and formaldehyde to cyanide gold extraction process effluents, containing at least 5 mg soluble copper per liter, will oxidize acid-dissociable cyanide to levels less than 0.2 mg per liter, without appreciable oxidation of thiocyanate. Most of the copper precipitates and is removed by filtration of the treated solutions. The treatment can be completed in less than 2 hours when the excess of hydrogen peroxide over the cyanide is about 75-100 mg per liter. The excess hydrogen peroxide destroys residual formaldehyde and then is catalytically decomposed by the copper-containing solids that separate, so it will not interfere with subsequent operation. A pilot plant using this technology has been operated for more than four months at rates from 1-2 gpm. Clear, filtered effluent containing less than 0.2 mg acid-dissociable cyanide per liter has been produced.

Thiobacillus ferrooxidans bacteria were used in this work to study the effect of bacterial adaptation on the bioleaching of three iron-bearing sulfide minerals, namely, pyrite, chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite. The change in the pH during the bioleaching process was observed and the mechanism of the bacterial action were discussed. It was found that bacterial adaptation prior to bioleaching, enhanced the degree of sulfide leaching by 2-4 folds over that of non-adapted bacteria. A1 so the bacterial activity was enhanced by 2-4.8 folds. The pH of leaching solutions was decreased by the increase in both adaptation period and bioleaching time. It was also concluded that the mechanisms of bioleaching of iron-bearing sulfide minerals involved both the direct and indirect bacterial action simultaneously.

In mid-April 1992, MINING ENGINEERING mailed a survey questionnaire relating to mining shovels and hydraulic excavators to 125 SME members working at surface mines or at the headquarters of companies that operate surface mines. The mailing was directed to individuals whose titles indicate that they have management or mine planning responsibilities for surface mining operations. A total of 56 usable surveys returned by June 17 are the basis of this report. Precious metals mines Eighteen precious metals mines or mining companies returned completed surveys in time to be included in this report. Of these, 14 use hydraulic shovels only for both ore and waste, I uses both hydraulic and rope shovels, and 2 use Caterpillar 988 front-end loaders for both ore and waste. (Of the latter 2, neither expects to be in the market for a shovel in the next three years. I of these 2 placed Harnischfeger P&H number one and O&K number two in response to the question, "Based on your current knowledge of their machines, which manufacturer would you likely chose to supply new shovels or excavators to a mine or mines operating under your responsibility, if you were in the market?") Another uses front-end loaders, make not designated. The latter does not expect to be in the market for mining shovels or excavators within the next three years. Of the final total of 14 precious metals mines using only hydraulic excavators to load ore and waste, 8 use Hitachi excavators only, 1 uses Demag excavators only, 1 uses Liebherr excavators only, 1 uses O&K excavators only, 1 uses Harnischfeger P&H and O&K excavators, 1 uses Harnischfeger P&H and Hitachi excavators, and 1 uses Hitachi and Demag excavators. Of the 14 precious metals mines using only hydraulic excavators, 7 use excavators in the 7.6 to 11.5 m; (10 to 15 cu yd) size range. Of these 7, 5 use only excavators in this size range, and they are used to load both ore and waste. 1 of the 7 also uses 11.5 to 17 m' (15 to 22 cu yd) excavators, and I also uses a 17 to 23 m3 (22 to 30 cu yd) excavator. Of the 7 remaining of these 14 precious metals mines that use only hydraulic excavators, 3 use 11.5 to 17 m' (15 to 22 cu yd), 2 use 17 to 23 m3 (22 to 30 cu yd), and 2 use less than 7.6 m' (10 cu yd) units.
