The trace element geochemistry of the cherty, clay-rich carbonate residuum. Covering much of southern Missouri and adjacent parts of Arkansas was investigated during the early 1970's as part of a statewide geochemical survey of Missouri-1/2/3 The study was environmentally oriented and focused on the character of the "natural' geochemical environment of the state. A great deal of effort was made to collect samples that would represent the geochemical variability of the near-surface environment in an unbiased way. In general, this was accomplished by use of randomization procedures in both collection and analysis. Most of the sampling sites were selected randomly to prevent personal bias from entering into sample selection. In the laboratory, samples were analyzed in a randomized sequence to circumvent the effects of any systematic bias that may have entered into the laboratory procedures. Several residuum samples contained 1 000 parts per million (ppm) or more of Pb, Zn and Ba. All these samples were collected in Washington County in or near the barite district. The frequency distributions shown in figure 1 indicate just how unusual the residuum in Washington County is with regard to these three metals and copper. The shaded parts of the histograms represent the samples from Washington County. The histograms are based on analyses of 141 samples from 38 localities scattered over the subcrop of the Cambrian and Ordovician Formations of southern Missouri and northern Arkansas. Eight localities were selected randomly from over each of four bedrock units--Bonneterre Dolomite, Potosi and Eminence Dolomites, Roubidoux Formation, and the Jefferson City, Powell and Cotter Dolomites. Six localities were selected randomly from over the Gasconade Dolomite. The geochemical "background" for these elements in residuum is defined by samples from outside of Washington County (unshaded part of the histogram); lognormal distribution curves have been fitted to the corresponding parts of each histogram. "INTRODUCTION Istanbul is a unique megalopolis connecting two continents. Population growth and economic development require permanent solutions and continuous investments on the transportation infrastructure. While the average population growth rate in Turkey is around 1.3% per annum, Istanbul is growing at an even faster rate of more than 1.5%. Even more striking is the fact that car ownership in Istanbul is increasing 5% a year, which is four times faster than the population growth. Although Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) has worked persistently to improve the quantity and quality of the public transportation system in the city through, in particular, extending the available rail system network, the need for extra roads has always fallen behind demand. To make things worse, Istanbul is divided by the Bosphorus Strait, the large waterway connecting the Black Sea to the north and Marmara Sea to the south, which leads to the Mediterranean. This waterway is crossed via two suspension bridges, the Bosphorus Bridge built in 1973 and the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge built in 1988. Current daily traffic across the bridges is around 450,000 vehicles per day. Ever increasing cross-Bosphorus traffic demands require other routes to be in place a soon as possible. While a third bridge farther north is currently under construction, yet another tunnel crossing is coming to the end of construction and is planned to be in service by December 2016. Being implemented under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, Istanbul Strait Road Tunnel Project (ISRTP, the Project) has been under the spotlight not only because of its distinctive technical characteristics but also because of its robust business model, exacting financial and legal arrangements, diverse stakeholders and challenging organizational management structure. The following paragraphs offer an overall view of the Project from inception to where it stands now and extend to the imminent operational phase, touching lightly on all major aspects of this challenging journey."

Abundant beach and offshore resources of gold deposits are demonstrated along the coast of Alaska, and Nome is one of the richest places. Considerable amounts of mineral resources data were collected and stored in geodatabase of ArcGIS. In searching for the best model for the interpretation of the Nome offshore gold placer deposit and accurate estimation of the reserve, the data were processed and visualized using ArcGIS. The gold concentration data collected from the Nome offshore deposit are of characteristics such that: (1) near lognormal distribution of data, (2) high positive skewed distribution, (3) a small number of extreme values dominating the reserve estimation, and (4) apparent anisotropy of the variogram. These characteristics make the development of an interpolation model for the gold deposit a challenging task. In this study, it is determined that five geostatistical methods provided by ArcGIS with visualization capability, i.e., Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW), Ordinary Kriging (OK), Ordinary Kriging with lognormal transformation (OK-log), Simple Kriging (SK) and Indicator Kriging (IK) are suitable candidates for the development of an interpolation model. The five algorithms are evaluated and compared with each other in the study. Cross-validation technique is employed to examine the accuracy of the five approaches. It is determined that the OK and SK algorithms are not suitable for this dataset because of the difficulty of fitting the semivariogram model despite their lower RMSE (Root-mean-square error) and the higher RMSS (Root-mean-square Standardized). The OK-log algorithm does not provide satisfactory prediction either, because it places too much weight on the role of extreme values resulting in overestimation and extremely high RMSE. Reserve estimation of each blocks is conducted using each of the interpolation methods and compared with the reserve calculated using the conventional polygon method. The IWD and IK algorithm seem to provide estimations more agreeable with the conventional polygon method.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is developing new dewatering technology to permit the recycling of iron values contained in wet steel plant sludges. In laboratory tests, Q-BOP fume sludge was dewatered to 12% moisture by displacing water with acetone in a plate-and-frame pressure filter. Acetone is reclaimed through distillation at lower cost than conventional thermal drying of the sludge. The projected additional energy requirement for acetone treatment of the sludge, including acetone recovery, is $5 to $7 per dry ton.

"New approaches that increase hydrometallurgical recovery from refractory minerals in below mill cutoff -grade sulfide copper ore can add significant value, improve profitability and increase ore reserves. This paper describes the development and implementation of an engineered heap (EH) approach to leaching low-grade, chalcopyritebearing ore at Freeport-McMoRan’s mine in Morenci, AZ. The technical evolution of the engineered heap concept is described together with the challenges and benefits following implementation. Introduction The Morenci ore deposit, located in eastern Arizona, has been mined for copper for 140 years. Mineralization in the Morenci district consists of sulfides and oxides. To process these ores, Morenci operates concentrator and leaching circuits. Leaching accounts for two-thirds of the copper produced in Morenci. More than one-half of this leaching-derived copper production comes from run-of-mine (ROM) stockpiles. The largest category of material moved in Morenci is destined for ROM stockpiles and waste dumps. Materials that are not economic to mill or leach are designated “waste.” However, this designation can change based on improvements in extraction technology and commodity prices. Chalcopyrite does not leach well due to its refractory nature. For predominant chalcopyrite mineralized ore, copper recovery during a typical leaching cycle may be as low as 5%. For this reason, chalcopyritedominant ores below mill cutoff grade have historically been classified as waste. By incorporating advanced leaching technology to improve metal recovery from previously leach-resistant ore types such as chalcopyrite, the Morenci Mine has been able to reclassify substantial amounts of this “waste” to “ore.” Process chemistry Chalcopyrite copper extraction is temperature, oxygen and ferric dependent. The temperature is achieved primarily by pyrite oxidation (Eq. (1)) and secondarily by oxidation of chalcopyrite itself (Eq. (2)). The regeneration of ferric in solution can be enhanced by providing the appropriate acid and oxygen levels according to Eq. (3). In the absence of microorganisms, this reaction is very slow."

INTRODUCTION Tens of deposits in' coal basins of Western and Eastern Siberia are being open-mined with the technology of overburden rehandling into the mined out space of pits by excavators - draglines. This technology is preferred due to the high productive Russian equipment, comparatively low cost, and relatively small Influence exerted on the environment. The basic tendency of the last decades is the aspiration for enlarging the sphere of the' technology application for development of gentle and steeply dipping seams with the use of blast destruction of overburden and with combined winning of loose alluviums and rock partings. Complex technological schemes with multiple rehandling are widely used. In addition to it, stripping workings, intermediate storage of mineral resources, placing of transport dumps, and engineering construction can be realized with the use of draglines. More than ten of dragline faces are simultaneously exploited in some pits, and the rehandling coefficient ranks from 0.1 to 8. Here, conditions of winning and placing (position of a face and existing dump) are varying in space and time; this leads to the necessity of reconsidering the order for conduction of works (schemes) within the current designing. By now, in order to this, it is required to realize complex engineering calculations by graph-analytical methods and definite experience. The need is available for automatization of this process by creation of the corresponding software. The software is to: • Orient on the active pits and use information on the existing geology, equipment, and situation in mine. • Calculate the existing schemes more operative and on a higher qualitative level to model their development in a pit space with parameter optimization. • Predict situations demanding to change the existing technology for mining operations and recommend optimal technological schemes. METHODOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS FOR MODELING The problem is not new, it has more than fifty year-old history of creating mathematical models algorithms, and programs in Russia, Ukraine, USA, Canada. Australia and other countries with the developed mining branch. Conventionally, all population of programs can be divided into three groups depending on goal and interval of prediction: • Long-term programs used in designing and intended for substantiation of the nine capacity, selection of mining system, establishment of limits for applying the technology of overburden rehandling. Since 1986, we have developed a series of electromagnetic (EM) sounding systems at the Laboratory for Advanced Subsurface Imaging (LASI). These may be categorized by their frequency ranges: low frequency (LF, 30 Hz to 30 kHz), medium frequency (MF, 1 kHz to 1 MHz), and high frequency (HF, 30 kHz to 30 MHz). We have applied these EM systems to a variety of targets, including: mapping of plumes of contaminated groundwater, tracing leachate for an in-situ leaching operation, locating buried hazardous waste, identifying subsidence-prone zones and detecting buried voids. These systems are also applicable to exploration for ore bodies. Currently, our sounding system uses a vertical magnetic field vector. Previous systems of this type required a slow and relatively inaccurate manual rotation of the sensing coils. The systems also used occasional calibrations of the measuring system. We have developed a 3-dimensional mathematical rotation procedure for the data, as well as a simultaneous, high-accuracy, calibration method. These new developments have greatly increased the speed of the measurements, as well as improving the accuracy of the ellipticity data. We use stepped-frequency measurements along with narrow-band filtering to allow accurate measurements, even in high-noise areas. We typically obtain ellipticity measurements at eleven frequencies and along densely sampled profile lines. We use neural networks to help interpret the measured ellipticity patterns. Neural networks can be trained to relate the measured ellipticity patterns to earth resistivities or to discrete targets buried in the earth. The neural network training may use theoretical EM responses calculated from computer codes for relatively simple structures. The theoretical EM response for many complex targets that are of interest cannot currently be reliably calculated, even with the largest supercomputers available. We have therefore chosen to do some of the training using theoretical EM responses generated in a full-scale modeling tank located at our Avra Valley Geophysical Test Site. We have also developed data-visualization software to help interpret the large data sets produced by this system.

In 1965, Monsanto started planning of a new dike (No. 15) for use in disposing of ore tailings at its Columbia, Tennessee phosphorus plant. Generally, in the phosphorus industry only clay tailings are produced making it necessary to borrow fill for construction of a retaining dike. Borrow area investigations indicated that weathered shales and limestones adjacent to the dam site would provide adequate construction materials. It was proposed that the more clayey weathered shales would be used for the impervious core and the more granular weathered limestones would be placed in the outer shell of the dike. A dike section is shown in Figure 1 with gradation curves for core and shell materials in Figure 2. Figure 3 shows an aerial view of the tailings pond and dike during first-stage construction. Although the borrow area explorations indicated that the weathering of the sedimen-tary deposits was highly irregular, it was not considered necessary, at the time, to specify special excavation techniques that would ensure a thorough blending of the materials in the borrow pit. Instead, because of the short haul distance, a scraper operation for both clay core and granular shell materials was adopted as the most economical construction method. Using this materials-handling technique, variations in permeability could be expected in the compacted layers inthe embankment. Where continuous layers of less clayey limestones were placed in the core of the dam, extending from the upstream to downstream shells, seepage losses would be expected to increase substantially. Upon completion of the damn 1966, and shortly after reservoir filling, it was apparent that the construction technique used had resulted in the formation of pervious layers through the clay core. Excessive seepage on the downstream face of the dike was noticeable within a very short time. A monitoring program was established, using piezometric observations and flow measurements. These data indicated that seepage should be reduced and the application of an asphaltic emulsion

An atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been applied to study the adsorption of potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) and potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) on arsenopyrite surface in solutions. AFM images show that the collectors adsorb on arsenopyrite surface in patches at pH 6. Increasing the chemical dosage will increase the adsorption density of the patches on mineral surface. The increased probe-arsenopyrite adhesion measured in PAX solutions at pH 6 is attributed to the adsorption of the patches, suggesting the hydrophobic nature of the patches, which is likely the oily dixanthogen. It is also found that arsenopyrite is reactive in water in the presence of air. At a high pH with the addition of Ca(OH)2 the adsorption of collectors on arsenopyrite is greatly retarded or depressed because the mineral surface is coated by a lot of precipitates, which is hydrophilic in nature as shown by the measured strong repulsive probe-arsenopyrite detachment force. The findings confirm that the flotation behavior of arsenopyrite in xanthate solutions is very similar to that of pyrite.

Final reclamation of mine tailings impoundments typically involves addressing the broad issues of surface stabilization and water management. Surface stabilization includes immobilizing the tailings particles and providing long-term protection of the containment facility. Water management typically includes provisions for handling both the external water (rainfall and runoff) and the internal water (pore fluids). Wet tailings disposal facilities, and sites with limited access and steep topography, present challenges to implementing effective surface stabilization and water management plans. This paper presents a generalized discussion of the approach to tailings impoundment reclamation based on project experience.

Equations for Power Draw, Capacity, and Work Input for predicting the performance of industrial grinding mills are derived based on torque measurements obtained in a laboratory instrumented mill. These derivations are based on mechanical principles and on the first order kinetics of the grinding process. Rittinger's, Kick's and Bond's laws express Work Input as Work Index, W;, times a Particle Size Function. These laws are only particular cases of more general expressions having the Particle Size Function raised to an exponent, the Work Exponent We. Case studies illustrate the excellent prediction of the W;-We models, compared to the three mentioned laws.

This investigation mainly focused on designing a bunker system for a large underground coal mine. The primary purpose of this bunker system was to keep high- and low-sulfur coal segregated on the underground belt system. These bunkers were also required for protecting the mine faces from out by belt delays. Methodologies used in developing this plan are briefly discussed. The final design and the procedures formulated for implementing it are also presented.

Groundwater remediation is growing in occurrence in the western United States. Groundwater remediation programs are regulated by state water quality statutes. The remedial action plans implemented under these statutes may conflict with well-established existing rights to withdraw groundwater for beneficial use. This paper discusses how the states of Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico administer conflicts between the need to withdraw and remediate groundwater with the existing rights of others to withdraw groundwater for beneficial purposes.

Harbuck et al. (1990) present results of research on sulfuric acid leaching of a germanium-gallium ore and shed considerable insight on possible extraction methods for gallium and germanium. However, the presentation does not give sufficient details to evaluate the research, so some of the conclusions may not be as applicable as stated. The objective of this communi¬cation is to indicate that relevant and easily obtainable geological and technical information was omitted. Consequently, on this basis, alternative explanations for some of the data are possible. Discussed below are the omission of: • pertinent geological, mineralogical and geochemical literature; • details regarding the determination of germanium concentration in quartz by electron microprobe; and • details on the calculation of the amount of germanium locked in quartz.

The United States produces approximately 40 mil- lion tons of phosphate rock per year. Most of this rock is converted to diammonium phosphate and used as a fertilizer component for the domestic and international agricultural market. Much of this phosphate rock production is concentrated in the southeastern United States, with about half coming from washing and screening operations and half from flotation separation from sand and clay. This paper summarizes current operating practice in the industry and touches on some of the emerging technologies required to solve the problems associated with a diminishing high- grade reserve and the need to implement dolomite/francolite separations on a commercial scale.

The behavior of gold particles on a spiral was studied using radioactive gold tracers. The method allowed the effects of particle size, particle shape, pulp density, feed rate and splitter settings to be studied. Although the method has been successfully applied to other gravity concentrators, it was found that reliable results were more difficult to obtain on the spiral. However, these preliminary results show that, with suitable precautions, the technique is capable of providing valuable information, unobtainable from conventional studies, that could be used to better optimize spiral performance.

The low-shear viscosity of kaolin slurries is one of the principal characteristics that determine whether a clay can be utilized for paper and ceramic applications. In this work, the causes of high low-shear viscosity and methods for improving the rheological behavior of the slurries were investigated. The presence of fine-grained smectite impurities within the kaolin was shown to detrimentally affect the low-shear rheology of the slurries produced from these clays. It was also shown that mechanically working (i.e., pugging) a crude kaolin followed by desliming to remove these impurities can reduce the low-shear viscosity.

4.1 INTRODUCTION Metallurgical testing is required on any ore, waste or tailing material before amenability to heap leaching treatment can be accurately determined. The amount of testing necessary to determine and optimize heap leach amenability and conditions for any feed material is determined by the ore type, grade, size of deposit, and the overall financial commitment a particular company is willing to make. It is very easy to either "under-test" or "over-test" a particular deposit or feed material. A good heap leach testing program will provide the necessary design information without "bogging" down in too much detail. The three basic stages of ore testing include: • Preliminary--bottle roll tests and small column percolation leach tests; • Detailed--larger column tests, different feed sizes, and feed size optimization; and • Pilot-Scale--Column or field heap. The following subchapters describe the stages of heap leach testing necessary to put a viable property into production. 4.2 PRELIMINARY METALLURGICAL TESTING The two types of preliminary tests that can be undertaken include bottle roll or cyanide agitation tests and small column leach tests. Each of these is described below, along with information about what the test results provide in terms of furthering knowledge of ore qualities. 4.2.1 Bottle Roll Tests The first step in a heap leach testing program is preliminary bottle roll tests at a relatively coarse feed size to determine the ore's leachability. Bottle roll tests are usually conducted on reverse circulation drill cuttings samples (= 1/4 inch (6 mm) in size). Bottle roll tests provide initial information about precious metal recovery, recovery rate, and reagent requirements. The recovery results are to be considered maximums because attrition grinding creates fines and liberates recoverable values that would not be liberated from the material during a static leach. Bottle roll tests can be conducted on up to 25 lb (11 kg) ore charges of up to two inches (50 mm) in size. However, the coarser the feed the more attrition grinding occurs during rolling.

The degree of economic, progress of a nation is measured by its possession and use of energy, sources. The future of coal in the West hinges on its ability to participate and grow in the energy market. A source of energy is, in the long run, only as good as the ability of the industry to develop its reserves economically. The economic development of the tremendous coal reserves, literally hundreds of billions of tons of coal in the States of Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico, and Arizona, poses a very real question in the light of the known mining technology of our day. Basically in America today, coal is mined from the earth either by the strip mine or underground mine method; in the West, the large long-term, contracts now in force with utilities are mostly from coal mines utilizing the strip mine method. However, the preponderance of the known coal reserves of the West are located deep underground and will have to be mined by the various; underground mining processes. The problems encountered in the West with regard to underground mining vary from state to state but, on the whole, do not present what might be considered a miner's bonanza. I do not mean to' infer that the underground coal of the West is unmineable, but I do want to emphasize that the tremendous reserve figures do not present a true picture in the light of present day technology.
