Over the past twenty years people throughout the world, but particularly in the United States, have been taking an increasing interest in the environment, sources and causes of pollution, and pollution abatement. Air quality in the United States has been and continues to be an area of primary emphasis. In 1970, the US Congress passed the Clean Air Act and subsequently revised and strengthened it in 1977 with the issuance of the New Source Performance Standards. The Act has been further strengthened with the passage of the 1990 Amendments. By far the largest single source of sulfur dioxide (SO,) pollutants are coal fued electric generating power stations. Hence, a substantial portion of the flue gas desulfurization (FGD) research and equipment installation has been geared to the utility industry. Several competing FGD technologies were touted during the period 1970 to 1990 with varying degrees of success. Subsequently, the more successful technologies have been accepted, revised, and improved to the point that by 1991 third and fourth generation technology is available. A second area of emphasis for FGD has been coal fired industrial boilers. While individually they are much smaller than any electric utility generating station, they do represent a significant source of sulfur pollution. However, due to the size of industrial boilers and their location within industrial and educational complexes, the wet scrubber technology being employed by the utilities is not appropriate for these applications. Hence, fluidized bed combustion (FBC) technology has been developed for the industrial boilers. Since the installation of the first full scale test unit at Georgetown University, several equipment vendors have come forward with an increasing array of more sophisticated FBC units. Currently, FBC technology has matured to the point that the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), in cooperation with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), has installed an FBC system on a 250 MW test unit at the Shawnee Power Station in Kentucky.

In 1997, Sveciala began a program to develop a process to convert waste tires into valuable commodities. A review of numerous approaches revealed shortcomings that were process related or mechanical related, while some of the approaches emphasized he production of low-value products. A market study revealed that a process that could produce a good grade of carbon black would be economically feasible. This paper discusses the laboratory and pilot-plant development and commercial plant design of such a process.

An expert process operation advisor system can increase plant efficiency, even in a complex, natural environment where not all elements of the production process can be measured directly. This system, develaped and tested in a Frasch process sulphur mine, monitors key process variables with extended qualitative pattern processing and provides on-line advise to the operators of sulphur production wells. An expert system framework captured common sense rules generated from years of experience obtained in the operation of a sulphur well monitoring system. The existent operating procedures were enhanced by process analysis using a qualitative modeling approach which provided extended rules for on-line classification of a well operational status and an expert alarm system. The methodology for development and implementation of the process advisor is presented in this report. Qualitative process modeling, statistical process control and heuristics were incorpomted into the process advisor resulting in a more efficient use of heat, an extended well operational life and the resulting cost savings. The computer process advisor also allowed the operator to concentrate his attention on the weak wells or wells in trouble. A process management system improved plant operation by automatically storing well data into a commercial database for operator validation. The enhanced relational data base system provided valuable and timely information for planning and decision making. The synergistic combination of on-line process analysis tools, expert control systems and database technology is shown to facilitate the flow of materials, energy and infomation in a modern plant.

An extensive program of marked ball wear testing (MBWT), laboratory corrosion studies, and worn ball surface analyses has been used to gain insight about the role of corrosion in the overall wear process. In some environments, localized corrosion is observed; the actual wear mechanisms in such cases are pitting/spalling and abrasion. Factors affecting the occurrence of pitting include the abrasiveness of the ore, corrosivity of the slurry, corrosion resistance of the media, and galvanic coupling effects. Elimination of pitting substantially improves overall wear resistance. When pitting is not observed, the contributions of general corrosion are significantly less.

INTRODUCTION Evaluation and optimization of mineral processes has been going on since the the first plant started hundreds of years ago. A huge mass of knowledge has been collected since then. The main problem with this type of empirical knowledge of complex processes is that it is very difficult to formulate and document. The methods used for collecting the knowledge is not consistent but-varies with "he person" that does it. In the late 60's and early 70's efforts were made to use computer based techniques to evaluate process performance and to formulate process models for mineral processes. Models were developed, such as the flotation model by R. P. King (1973) which is still used to simulate flotation circuit behaviour. During the 70's. a number of mass balancing packages were developed together with process simulation packages. The industrial sector also made great efforts to develop and utilize computer based systems for process control and evaluation. The expert system that BOLIDEN created in 1974 at the Kristineberg plant was a remarkable achievement considering the hardware (CDC 3600) and the software tools (FORTRAN) available at that time. The main obstacle to successfully implement optimizing computer control of mineral processes was and still is the limited knowledge about the dynamics of complex processes. There are, however. many activities going on in this area today and it seems that the technology is very near a break through. Process evaluation is the most important tool to improve and maintain the optimal performance of a process. Today dedicated computer based techniques are used for fast and reliable screening of the processes. The stages in process evaluation consist of three basic steps: - Data acquisition, manually or by data logging. - Data refining, mass balancing and parameter calculation. - Data evaluation. The refined data can then be used for model construction/calibration and subsequently for process simulation. The Virginia Operations of Consolidation Coal Co. include a diversity of mine fan configurations which have been tested to quantify pressure losses through the inlet ductwork. Airflow and pressure measurements were taken at four shaft sites to calculate losses for the 90-degree bend at the top of the shaft and the self-closing dampers or closing doors located between the shaft and fan. Velocity contours were then developed from the test data to determine flow patterns in each fan system component. In addition, yaw and pitch angles of airflow through the fan annulus were measured to evaluate turbulence levels created by various inlet ductwork designs. The test results indicate that proper design of the shaft collar and ductwork arrangement for main mine fans can substantially reduce system pressure losses and air turbulence. BY minimizing the pressure drop experienced on the surface, these design improvements enable the bulk of the total pressure developed by the fan(s) to be utilized in the mine.

Longwall mining has not received a great deal of attention in the United States; however, this system offers many advantages over the conventional room-and-pillar methods now being used. In order to conserve the coal resources of this country, the U. S. Bureau of Mines has investi¬gated the feasibility of adapting European longwall mining methods to American coal seams. Their studies showed longwall mining to be well suited to thinner seams and, greater depths; and, in addition, permitted almost 100 percent recovery of the coal. Most, experiments with this method resulted in higher overall production-costs than were commonly obtained with highly mechanized room-and-pillar techniques This high cost-was largely due to the excessive amount of labor required to maintain adequate roof support with conventional longwall mining techniques. With the substitution of hydraulic-powered, self-advancing roof support systems for conventional supports, this excessive labor cost has been decreased, and longwall mining costs are now competitive with those of modern room-and-pillar mining.

Quartz dust is one of the most significant ongoing health concerns in coal mining today. Since initial verification of this health risk in coal mines by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) during the early 1980’s, the Bureau of Mines has conducted numerous studies in underground mines to identify the sources of quartz dust and its fundamental characteristics. The most significant underground quartz dust source was found to be the continuous miner excavating rock. The percentage of quartz was also found to be higher in the smaller size fractions of the dust when significant amounts of rock was mined by the continuous miner. Furthermore, the quartz content in the continuous miner return remained fairly consistent at greater distances from the face. Another important factor speculated to affect quartz dust generation and its size characteristics is the morphology of the quartz bearing rock. The quartz content of dust between mines had notable differences with respect to the differences between kaolinite content in the dust. Low kaolinite content was associated with higher quartz content and increased size segregation of quartz into smaller dust particles, indicating that the free silica bonding matrix in the rock is most likely another factor responsible for quartz dust produced through mechanical comminution.

INTRODUCTION The Wyodak Mine is located in the northern Powder River Basin of Wyoming and is thought to be the oldest continuously operating coal mine in the United States, having recorded yearly production since 1923. The mine has expanded over its 80-plus-year history from an underground room and pillar operation to a modem surface snip mine. Currently, the mine feeds four on-site power plants using conveyors, has a filly automated truck load-out, and ships coal by rail to nearby Wyoming power plants. Annual production of 4.8 MTFT is accomplished on a single-shift basis with 53 fill-time production, maintenance and administrative personnel. In 1990 a decision was made to modernize the coal feed system to the power plant complex with modular conveying equipment. The project involved constructing coal storage silos, overland conveyors, feeder breakers and modular conveyors to follow the mining benches. Total project cost in excess of $25 million was used to construe or commission: A 2,150-TPH 48-inch overland conveyor with horizontal curve A 2,150-TPH 48-inch plant feed conveyor 13 shuttle conveyors, each 150 feet in length 2 front-end loaders equipped with large coal buckets 2 crawler-mounted feeder breakers with compatible discharge conveyor 1 high-lift shuttle conveyor with adjustable discharge height 1 high-angle conveyor 2 4,500-ton coal silos with automated truck load- out capabilities. Conceptually, the plan was to develop 33 MTONS of reserve adjacent to the plant complex and use front-end loaders to tram ROM coal to in-pit feeder breakers. The primary crushing would reduce coal to 6-inch minus and feed through a series of shuttle conveyors to an overland supply conveyor. The overland conveyor would feed the secondary crusher, and the crushed product would be moved to any of four storage silos using conveyors. The in-pit crushing and conveying system is a unique fit for the power plants and provided many interesting challenges for the coal mine to overcome. System integration, maintenance windows, equipment availability and the like had a major role in engineering the system to a power plant complex having no emergency coal stock- pile and limited plant storage. In crediting the designers and operators, the in-pit conveying system at the Wyodak Mine has delivered coal to the power generators since 1994 with little or no downtime. ENGINEERING CONSIDERATIONS Yearly production for the mine is based on 3.5 MTPY which requires about 1,550 TPH on an 8 hour, one-shift- per-day, 5-days-per-week basis. Considering efficiencies for starting and stopping, crew transport, loader trams, and operational delays, a nominal conveyor feed rate of 2,150 TPH or 72% system utilization was used in engineering design application. This ton-per-hour basis is used to size and commission the remaining components of the in-pit system. Coal quality requirements also played a role in equipment selection. The mine reserve grades vertically and coal from Upper and Lower benches needed to be mixed in any given proportion. This required equipment to be filly variable and capable of producing all or part of the 2,150-ton-per-hour requirement. Bisecting the 80-foot- high coal face for quality required construction of a high lift module capable of reaching a single overland conveyor 40 to 50 feet above the pit floor. Designers built a high-lift, adjustable and portable module specific for this application Having two bench systems capable of each producing the required feed for the power plants required computerized control processes to control on-line production. RSLinx, RSLogix, and RSView were chosen as the communication and control software, and a Data Highway Plus serves as the communication backbone. The direct recovery of precious metals from a1kaline cyanide solution is frequently accomplished by the well-established Merrill-Crowe process involving zinc-dust cementation. This is particularly true for silver. Plant data from two operations are presented and analyzed in terms of intrinsic reaction features. In such Merrill-Crowe plants a plate-and-frame filter press acts as a semicontinuous fixed-bed reactor with a distribution of particle retention times. For the plants studied, 99Yo of the silver is recovered with a solution retention time of less than 2 min. Differences in plant operating conditions and product characteristics can be related to the nature of the surface deposit of silver which forms on the zinc particles. From laboratory experiments and plant samples it has been found that the presence of lead in the system activates a change in the silver deposit morphology to the dendritic state which affects the rate of silver deposition as well as the filter cake porosity. Finally the plate-and-frame press is considered from an engineering perspective as a semi- continuous fixed - bed reactor to describe the behavior of the system.

The design of comminution circuits and the evaluation of alternatives should be based on state-of-the-art equipment and appropriate design criteria - considerations that are often neglected by today's designers. This paper critically reviews common circuit designs, evaluates various alternatives for difficult-to-treat ores, and discusses the factors that should be considered when developing new plant designs or auditing existing plant performance. Data obtained from laboratory, pilot and plant-scale test work on a wide range of ores and circuits are used to justify the author's conclusions.

At the Kidd Creek site, natrojarosite residue, derived from the zinc refinery circuit, is mixed with mill tailings before final disposal in the tailings impoundment. Column experiments were conducted with fresh unoxidized mill tailings and a mixture of tailings containing the natrojarosite residue. Acidic water, simulating mine drainage water, was pumped through the columns. The effluent water geochemistry was interpreted with the assistance of MINTEQA2. The experimental results suggest that the effluent water pH was buffered by a series of acid neutralization reactions. The release of metals, including Cu, Pb and Zn, was affected by pore water pH, Eh and mineralogy of the tailings material.

The primary purpose of this project was to produce and test coal concentrates made from coal preparation plant waste fines for use in a slurry-fed gasifier. Concentrates from several individual waste streams were examined to determine their amenability as feedstock for a slurry-fed, slagging, entrained-flow gasifier. The tests included analyses of the plant feed and product, material balances, and estimates of gasification reactivity and of pumpability. The following preparation plant fines were examined: • fresh rejects produced in a plant processing underground- mined Springfield Coal • fresh rejects produced in a plant processing underground- mined Herrin Coal • fresh rejects produced in a plant processing surface-mined Springfield Coal and Herrin Coal • Five-year old impounded fines rejected during processing of underground mined Herrin Coal. At high coal recoveries the Btu content of the concentrates was greater than the Btu content of the utility product from the plant. The coal recovered from fines was found to be entirely acceptable for gasification and pumping without additives.

This paper describes some concepts developed in a geologic data recording system at the Victoria, Nevada breccia pipe-skarn copper mine. The recording system is not fundamentally new, but represents expansion of earlier ideas. The paper is based on the philosophy that a high quality geologic data base is necessary and that it should be complete, clear, standardized, neat, quantitative, and readily useable. It may be multi-colored or simply black and white. Graphic, descriptive and quantitative recording of data is essential. A format for core logging is presented and discussed and as well as a multiple overlay system for recording data gathered in surface mapping.

Disseminated epithermal gold metallization occurs within a breccia unit interpreted to be a submarine debris flow. Gold is associated with oxidized pyrite, fluorite, and jasperoidal silica. A minimum of 8 Mt (9 million at) of open-pittable mining reserves will be cyanide heap leached as run-of-mine ore at a rate of 0.9 Mt (1.0 million stpy). Careful evaluation of the combined results of successive sampling projects has established the pit plan, minable reserves, and process metallurgy of the operation. The sampling procedure utilized for a given test depended upon geological interpretation as well as the procedures, successes, and failures of previous tests. This paper summarizes the sampling and testing procedures of the development effort in light of the project goals and attendant problems in achieving them.

Sampling and subsequent geostatistical structural analysis is being carried out on the Bunker Hill Superfund site in northern Idaho's Silver Valley. This paper reports on the findings and methodology used in the initial sampling campaign which had the goal of determining an appropriate sampling grid design, spacing and protocol. Emphasis is placed on those characteristics, of mine wastes which are unique and require special consideration when applying geostatistical analysis. This study represents one of the first applications of geostatistical techniques to the problem of hazardous mining waste site characterization. Remediation of Superfund projects similar to the one described herein represents opportunity as well as liability for the mining industry.

A new method for the design of long- wall chain pillars, called Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS), is described. The method provides estimates of the relative stability of different longwall pillar designs during all stages of their service life. The key issue addressed by ALPS is the magnitude and time-of-arrival of the longwall abutment loads applied to chain pillars. A field study was conducted and other available field data were analyzed in order to develop an approach for estimating the abutment loads. An example based on longwall experience in the Pittsburgh seam is used to illustrate how ALPS can be used in mine design.

A fluid bed dryer has been designed for a nonconventional application to upgrade the value of fine anthracite culm and silt recovered from culm banks and anthracite tailings pond beds. This material can be seen as large spoil piles scattered throughout the anthracite coal regions of Eastern Pennsylvania. Engineering of the system commenced in December of 1986 and at this writing start-up is scheduled for late October or early November of 1987. This paper will focus on generalities concerned With system design and operation, and qualify the differences from conventional fluid bed coal drying systems.
