The hard rock gold and platinum mines in South Africa have seen little development in the technology of mining. Holes are still drilled in the rock?though the latest water hydraulic rockdrills will complete that task in two minutes compared with the eight hours for hand drilling. Charging up is with far safer explosives and with available initiation systems it is no longer necessary to run up the face lighting each fuse. Movement of rock in the stope is predominately by means of scraper buckets and scraper winches?these were first introduced in the 1920s. Support is still mainly rock, either in situ pillars or backfill, or alternatively wood. Just as the mining process has changed very little it is hardly surprising that the productivity of mining is also relatively unchanged. Major efforts have been made to mechanize the mining process. However, most of the narrow reef mines where ?trackless mechanized mining? was introduced in the early1980s have reverted to conventional mining. In the wider reefs mechanized mining is the option of choice, unfortunately most of the gold and platinum mines have very narrow reefs that are not suitable to ?off the shelf? equipment. The move to introduce room-and-pillar mining into the narrow UG2 reefs is at the expense of mining more waste with the reef, fortunately it appears that appropriate waste and reef separation processes are available. Room-and-pillar mining followed by long hole drilling and blasting of a narrow slot of reef out of the pillars currently appears to offer the best of both worlds?maximum reef recovery with minimum waste dilution.

Extensive field studies have been carried out to investigate the pillar fire problems in one coal mine in India. A Thermal IR gun and a Thermovision camera have been employed for thermal scanning to assess the state of heating in selected pillars. Special sampling set-ups have been designed to collect gas samples from the holes drilled into the selected pillars and the multigas detector is used to analyse the composition of samples in situ. In order to predict the spontaneous heating in coal pillars, different gas ratios have been calculated and it has been observed that some of the established gas ratios, viz. Graham?s ratio, Young?s ratio etc. have resulted in negative values in samples containing high amounts of methane. The modified gas ratios have been proposed which will be useful for predicting the pillar fires. These ratios may also be used for assessing the condition of fires in sealed-off areas.

Plain and alloyed titanium aluminides of composition Ti-47.5 at.% Al were prepared by melting commercial-purity titanium and aluminium with additions of 1 at.% precious metal. The as-cast alloys were subjected to potentiodynamic scans in 5, 15, and 25 wt% HCl aqueous solutions at room temperature and compared for their abilities to spontaneously passivate. Addition of precious metals resulted in a general improvement of corrosion resistance by increasing the open circuit potential to more noble values. Addition of 1 at.% gold or silver to titanium aluminide did not significantly increase the corrosion potential (Ecorr) above that of the plain titanium aluminide alloy, indicating that gold and silver are not sufficient cathodic modifiers to improve the corrosion resistance of titanium aluminide in all the solutions tested. However, platinum, palladium, and iridium additions shifted the corrosion potentials to the position of the passive region of plain TiAl for all solution concentrations. This indicated that TiAl alloyed with these platinum group metals would passivate spontaneously by cathodic modification. TiAl alloyed with palladium performed the best in 5 wt% HCl solution with the most positive corrosion potential. In 15 wt% HCl solution, alloys with platinum exhibited the most positive corrosion potentials, while alloying with iridium or palladium revealed more negative corrosion potentials. Thus, palladium alloying led to the best cathodic modification of titanium aluminide in low-concentration HCl solution, whereas platinum and iridium alloying additions resulted in the best cathodic modification of titanium aluminide in high-concentration HCl solutions.

Coal desulphurization by flotation is often difficult due to the surface oxidation of coal pyrite. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were adopted to obtain detailed information about the surface oxidation of pyrite. Fresh pyrite surfaces were found to be hydrophilic, and to turn hydrophobic after initial oxidation, with oxidized products such as polysulphide FeSx and free sulphur. The oxidized products on the pyrite surface were reduced by an electrochemical method, returning the surfaces to a hydrophilic state and thus increasing the separating efficiency of coal from pyrite by flotation. Surface defects on continuously cast slabs require treatment by grinding. This extra phase in the process causes lower throughput of final product and extra energy costs. The elimination of slab treatment after casting implies that slabs can be direct rolled or hot charged, resulting in higher throughput and lower energy costs. To increase the number of slabs that can be direct rolled or hot charged, defects have to be predicted before a slab has completed the casting process. Transversal and longitudinal cracking, casting powder entrapment and other inclusions, bleeders, deep and uneven oscillation marks, stop marks and depressions are the defects thatare considered for prediction. A structure with two models is proposed. The first model describes the effect of mould level, water inlet temperature and casting speed (MV?manipulated variables) on 38 thermocouple temperatures (IV?intermediate variable). Casting speed is a manipulated variable while mould level and water inlet temperature are treated as measured disturbances. This model is known as the MV to IV model, and is used to control the occurrence of defects. The second model describes the effect of the thermocouple temperatures on the defects at different positions and locations on the slabs (OV?output variables). This model is known as the IV to OV model and is the predictor of defects. The models are determined using time-series methods in the form of auto regression with exogenous input using data of approximately 500 slabs cast over a period of 6 months. The models are validated using plant data from 44 slabs gathered three years later, with good results. As an example, published results give a sensitivity and specificity of 61.5 per cent and 75 per cent respectively for longitudinal cracks on validation data, while the presented method gives 63.6 per cent and 93.5 percent, respectively. The IV to OV model is used in an inversion to determine the optimal thermocouple temperatures for each slab width. South Deep Gold Mine, owned by Gold Fields Ltd., is situated near Westonaria in the Gauteng Province of South Africa and mines the conglomerate bands of the Upper Elsburg reefs (Mondeor Conglomerate Formation) of the Witwatersrand Supergroup and the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) of the Ventersdorp Supergroup. The stoping and underground developments are mechanized. The Upper Elsburg reefs are mined by a variety of mining methods, including mechanized drift and fill, modified drift and bench, longhole stoping, and low-profile mining. Optimal mine design and scheduling for deep-level mechanized mining are complex, and success is highly dependent on detailed, robust, and accurate geological and geostatistical models. Geological structures significantly influence the sedimentological characteristics, distribution, and preservation of the Upper Elsburg reefs and VCR. Accordingly, particular emphasis is placed on the generation of a mine-scale structural model that accommodates the relationships between the older north-trending fault systems (West Rand and Panvlakte faults) and younger east-trending dextral wrench faults. Results from underground mapping, borehole intersections, and highresolution three-dimensional seismic data have been integrated to produce coherent three-dimensional geological models. The Upper Elsburg reefs suboutcrop against the VCR and comprise an easterly diverging clastic wedge, thickening from the suboutcrop position, to approximately 130 m at the mine?s eastern boundary. The Upper Elsburg reefs are characterized by conglomerate and quartzite bands forming multiple, stacked, upward-fining unconformity-bounded couplets. Palaeocurrent directions are dominantly from west-northwest to east-southeast, indicating that the more proximal deposits are preserved close to the suboutcrop, with distal facies to the east. Sedimentological modelling is applied to individual stratigraphic units and caters for facies definition. This is achieved through channel width (CW) kriging and fitting of type sections to borehole and mapping data. Homogenous geological geozones for each stratigraphic unit are thus defined within individual structural blocks on the basis of those sedimentological parameters that have been found to have a positive spatial correlation to gold concentration. These geozones then serve as constraints to the evaluation of the orebody. This contribution presents a summary of the modelling processes that are currently applied in the development of high-confidence, timeously produced geological models that are essential input for mineral resource estimation and mechanized mine planning and scheduling.

Gravity-driven rock falls account for a large proportion of all fatalities and injuries in underground mines. Potentially unstable blocks of rock are found in the hanging wall of excavations, which may be delineated by natural joints or stress fractures. These blocks, referred to as keyblocks, will fail if their weight exceeds the support capacity or if they are located between support units. This paper describes a computer program which simulates blocks in the hanging wall of an excavation based on measured properties of fractures and joints. Keyblocks are identified and placed at random locations in a predefined excavation. The keyblocks are tested against the support to determine whether they fail the support, drop out between the support or are stable. By repeating the procedure several thousand times, statistics of the probability of failure of the keyblocks are obtained. This approach allows the relative hazard associated with different types of support or excavation orientations to be obtained. It is concluded that a probabilistic approach is suitable for the evaluation of supports effectiveness in situations where large numbers of discontinuities or stress fractures are exposed in excavations.

"Since the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) in mid-2008, capital has been more difficult to access. Mining projects must contend with projects from other industries for scarce capital. A decision to invest available capital in mineral projects requires that valuation be conducted to assess the expected return on the projects. The discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis is generally applied for the valuation of mining projects, whereby future cash flows are discounted to present value using an appropriate discount rate. The discount rate significantly affects the outcome of a valuation. Economic and finance theory provides tools to calculate discount rates. The discount rate must account for factors such as the risk and stage of development of the mineral project; hence the appropriate discount rate to utilize in a project is often a subject of debate.The discount rate is the weighted sum of the cost of debt and equity. There are several methods for determining the cost of equity. This study considers the commonly applied Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and Gordon’s Wealth Growth Model because of their simplicity and availability of parameters required to estimate the cost of equity. This study explores how differences in the cost of equity obtained by these two methods can be explained for a mining environment. Data for empirical analysis were collected from the I-Net Bridge, McGregor BFA, and Bloomberg databases. It was found that Gordon’s Wealth Growth Model provides better estimates of the cost of equity compared to the CAPM under depressed market conditions. Therefore, this research recommends that Gordon’s Wealth Growth Model be used to estimate the discount rates for mining projects during periods of depressed market conditions."

Dense-medium beneficiation of fine (minus 0.5 mm) coal is not a new concept and has been used in South Africa previously. The dense-medium fine coal plant at Greenside Colliery operated for almost 18 years and, despite proving a difficult plant to operate, did succeed in producing a fine coal product with a low ash content of 7%. No other beneficiation process available could achieve this. Dense-medium beneficiation of fine coal was also used in other countries, of which the plants at Homer City in the USA and Curragh in Australia were the best known. The first application of dense-medium cleaning of fine coal was, however, at the Tertre plant in Belgium1. This plant was built in 1957. About nine years later, a second fine coal dense-medium plant was built at the Winterslag Mine, also in Belgium. According to reports, this plant operated satisfactorily for a period of some 17 years.

Cromanite?is a new high-strength austenitic stainless steel developed by Columbus Stainless. It contains approximately 19 percent chromium, 10 per cent manganese and 0,5 per cent nitrogen. Cromanite can be welded successfully, but due to the high nitrogen content of the base metal, certain precautions have to be taken to ensure sound welds with the desired combination of properties. Although no matching filler metals are currently available, Cromanite can be welded using a range of commercially available stainless steel welding consumables. Welds produced using E309L, E307, E307Si and E312 filler wires are resistant to hot cracking and the formation of nitrogen-induced porosity, but the hardness, strength, ductility and toughness of the welds are generally inferior to those of the base metal. In applications where full use is made of Cromanite?s high strength, welds with matching strength levels would be required. In wear applications, where Cromanite is used primarily for its work-hardening properties and corrosion resistance, lower strength welds would probably be acceptable. Welds produced using E307 filler metal demonstrate the best combination of properties for use in wear applications. The welds display high rates of work-hardening that would result in increases in hardness and strength when subjected to abrasive or high impact environments.

Room-and-pillar mining is commonly employed for the extraction of rock salt in undergroundmines. Pillar stress is a major concern in these mines as it is directly related to stability and mineralrecovery. In this study a flat jack method was used to measure pillar stresses in three undergroundrock salt mines in Pakistan. The field work included determination of in-situ stress, in-situ elastic modulus, recording of field variables (pillar length and width, height and width of opening, opening width to height ratio, extraction ratio, and overburden height) and collection of salt block samples. The geomechanical properties of rock salt (uniaxial compressive strength, Young’s modulus, Brazilian tensile strength, and density) were also determined to estimate overburden stress, pillar strength, and factor of safety (both estimated and actual). It was found that the measured pillar stresses are proportional to the overburden stress values, with their magnitude ranging from 6.05 MPa to 11.97 Mpa, and the pillars were found to be stable. Regression analysis was performed to develop statistical models for in-situ stress and in-situ elastic modulus. Finally a quick guideline chart was developed to determine the suitable length of pillar for a given span and required level of safety.

The accident at Unit No. 2 of the Three Mile Island nuclear reactor (TMI-2) on 28 March 1979 was the worst nuclear accident in US history and crippled the nuclear industry. An international Vessel Investigation Project was formed to assess the integrity of the vessel. However, it was not possible to remove specimens from the lower head until January?March 1990. Fourteen of the fifteen specimens removed by electrical discharge machining were from under the debris pile that accumulated on the lower head due to melting of approximately 19 000 kg (45%) of the core. Specimens were previously cut from the lower head of a cancelled reactor of very similar size and design destined for Midland, Michigan. These specimens were subjected to controlled heating cycles with peak temperatures from 800°C to 1100°C for periods of 1 to 100 minutes. The initial study qualitatively compared the structures in the 15 specimens from TMI-2 to the control specimens from the Midland lower head. The writer used the same specimens and employed microindentation hardness traverses, electron microprobe analysis, and selective etching followed by quantitative metallography (by image analysis) to obtain a far more detailed description of the thermal exposure experienced.

ABSTRACT: The paper presents investigation of carboniferous slates from the Trojane hilly area performed on series of samples of equal material. The results of static loading tests show that carboniferous slate is heterogeneous and yields on slate layers. Where that kind of heterogeneity is distinctive the strength results are essentially lower of commonly tests results. The results of dynamical loading tests show that the slate surfaces have the essential meaning for the stability of the material. When those surfaces are moistened the material become unstable. RÉSUMÉ: L'article présente une épreuve des ardoises carbonifères de la région montagneuse de Trojane sur une série des échantillons des matériaux identiques. Les résultats des tests de charge statique montrent que l'ardoise carbonifère est hétérogène et qu'elle cède sur les couches d'ardoise. Quand l'hétérogénéité est distinctive, les résultats de stabilité sont essentiellement plus bas que les résultats obtenus par des tests ordinaires. Les résultats des tests de charge cyclique montrent que les surfaces d'ardoise sont très importantes pour la stabilité du matériel. Quand ces surfaces sont mouillés, le matériel devient instabile. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der Artikel präsentiert die Forschung von Karbonschiefersteinen im Bereich des Bergland Trojane, ausgeführt durch Serien von Proben aus den gleichen Erdmaterial. Die Resultate der statischen Belastungsprüfungen zeigen, das die Karbonschiefersteine heterogen sind und die Schieferflächen nachlassen. Wo bei dieser Art der Heterogenität die Festigkeitsergebnisse wesentlich niedriger sind als bei gewöhnlichen Testergebnissen. Die Ergebnisse der zyklischen Belastungsprüfungen zeigen das die Schieferflächen eine wesentliche Bedeutung für die Stabilität des Erdmaterials haben. Wen diese Schieferflächen befeuchtet sind, wird das Erdmaterial unstabil.

The resistance of yielding rockbolts to multiple impact loads was tested by means of a drop hammer. The methodology was based on the ASTM D7401-08 standard as well as the requirements specified for rockbolts by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB – a Swedish mining company) and the Safety In Mines Research Advisory Committee of South Africa (project number GAP 423). During the tests, the loading force and bolt elongation were measured with a sampling frequency of fs = 19.2 kHz. In order to analyse the phenomena involved, the tests were recorded using two independent high-speed video cameras (600 and 1000 frames per second) and one thermal camera (128 frames per second). The tests demonstrated that all the samples transferred double the gravitational potential energy of Ep = 50.85 kJ from the impact load of mass m = 2825 kg and impact velocity of v = 6.0 m/s without failure. Damage to the bolt-resin contact in the upper anchoring zone of the bolt in the steel tube occurred after subsequent impacts. As a result, the macro-deformed bolt exhibits additional yield, and its operation following the shearing of the resin bond is similar to that of a ‘cone bolt’. Only one test resulted in damage to the threaded bolt rod-nut coupling, during the fourth impact; however, no damage to the bolt-resin contact zone was observed.

The seismicity of the Witwatersrand Basin and Bushveld Complex has been analysed, revealing significant differences in source and damage mechanisms. A comparison of mining taking place at similar depths and extraction ratios indicates that the seismic energy release rate is considerably lower in the Bushveld Complex. Technologies introduced in the past decade to manage the risk of rockbursting are reviewed and assessed. These include geophysical methods to detect hazardous structures ahead of mining, new mining layouts and support systems, and the mechanization of in-stope processes. Despite important differences in geology, in situ stress, mining layouts and methods, there are many opportunities for the reciprocal transfer of knowledge, experience and technology between the gold and platinum mining sectors to improve the management of the rockburst risk.

Electron microbeam analysis of metallurgical samples covers abroad field and has applications in the areas of minerals processing, hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, physical metallurgy and corrosion. Some idea of the possibilities of microbeam techniques can be illustrated by examining the following example of a run of mine gold ore sample. Milling and bulk chemical analysis of the ore will provide major and minor element analysis as well as the gold grade. More detailed chemistry can also reveal the presence of trace elements that may be advantageous or deleterious to downstream processing. Electron microbeam analysis can provide additional information in the form of size, liberation, association and composition of the gold, the percentage of refractory gold, the size, liberation, association and composition of enclosing sulphide or arsenide phases and the levels and association of the trace elements that may affect processing. In most cases electron microbeam analysis complements bulk chemistry, and does not replace it. Both techniques should be used in parallel for maximum effect. This paper touches on the origin and history of electron microbeam techniques, as well as the theory behind microbeam analysis and processing. The more common types of instruments and their applications will also be dealt with briefly.

INFACON is of special significance to people in South Africa who are interested in ferro-alloys, because it was in South Africa that the idea of regular international congresses on ferro-alloys was conceived and developed. INFACON 74, the first-ever such congress, was held in Johannesburg from 22nd to 26th April, 1974, being organized by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the National Institute for Metallurgy, and the Ferro Alloy Producers' Association of South Africa. New South Wales has a successful history of pillar extraction stretching back more than 60 years. Various methods of pillar extraction ranging from the rib pillar methods (such as the Wongawilli system) to the more recent pillar stripping techniques (similar to those used in the USA) are discussed in this paper. These discussions are based on the experiences of the author stemming from a recent research tour of seven underground pillar extraction operations in New South Wales as part of the Coaltech 2020 collaborative research initiative. Some operational issues of each site visited are presented before some general comments pertaining to the overall success of pillar extraction in New South Wales are discussed. Generally pillar extraction in New South Wales is on the decline in favour of longwalling. However, the pillar extraction that is conducted is done so along specific guidelines to ensure their success, and these are also discussed.

The slag-tailings based artificial reef concrete (ARC) is made of CaO-CaSO4 activated granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) as cementitious material and deslimed gold ore tailings as aggregate. In order to investigate the potential application of the material as ARC, the strength development, hydration characteristics and application performance were investigated under different preparation conditions. Results indicated that using seawater as the mixing water can effectively promote the hydration of slag and generate a large amount of hydration products such as ettringite, CSH gel, hydrotalcite and Friedel ’s salt in the early curing period and so render the material with good early compressive strength. Seawater curing can also accelerate the hydration reaction in the early stage of hydration. The hydration reaction of slag and the compressive strength of ARC can be effectively promoted by increasing the specific surface area of slag. The 28-day compressive strength of the slag-tailings based ARC prepared with 30-50% CaO-CaSO4 activated slag and 50-70% tailings can reach to 19.88-42.87 MPa. Also, the material has a low surface pH value, good resistance to chloride ion penetration, and sulfate corrosion. Coal is a complex heterogeneous commodity that can be mined in a number of ways and needs to be processed to a homogeneous quality that satisfies the customer?s requirements, while attempting to maximize revenues. Only a small proportion of coal is suitable for metallurgical use. Export coals cover a wide range of qualities and some coals can be used optimally in the raw state for energy production. Critical quality parameters vary and can be a combination of heat value, ash, volatiles, sulphur, phosphorus, sizing, amongst others. The level of beneficiation is generally dictated by the washability of the coal, mining contamination, and the target product quality. The steps in the coal chain covered in this paper comprise exploration, mining selections, production, the washing process, and product delivery. Many points of sampling are needed to maximize yield at the correct quality, and some of these will be described in the paper. Keywords coal chain, coal beneficiation, sampling.
