Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, calcium carbide, acetylene, Newcastle The manufacture of calcium carbide in Newcastle, South Africa, was started in the late 1950s by a company called South African Carbide, at the Ballengeich site. In 1978, this operation was bought by the forerunner to the present AECI Ltd, a large producer of commodity chemicals at the time. Production continued at this site until 1992. In the meantime, Karbochem, an operating division of Sentrachem Ltd, was also manufacturing carbide in Newcastle, as a building block for the manufacture of synthetic rubber. In 1990, the Karbochem calcium carbide operation was closed down. In 1992, the AECI carbide business and the Karbochem production facility were amalgamated, and production continued under the Karbochem name. In 1997, the Dow Chemical Company bought the holding company of Karbochem, and the carbide business continued operations until 2003. In June 2003, the business was sold to a management consortium as SA Calcium Carbide (Pty) Ltd. Later, in October 2004, 100% of the shares were acquired by the Andina Group. Today, the Andina Group, consisting of SACC from South Africa, CIL from UK, and ANDINA from Argentina, has become a global leader in the manufacture and supply of calcium carbide and calcium silicon, ferro silicon 75% and derivatives, recarburizers with low nitrogen content, acetylene, carbon black, micro-silica, and silicon metal. The production facilities at Newcastle comprise a 52 MVA submerged arc furnace of a closed design, carbon monoxide gas recovery, recovery of fine raw materials via a hollow electrode system, and an extensive computer-controlled process. These all enable an efficient state-of-the-art operation. The downstream processing facilities consist of screening and drumming facilities, milling facilities, an acetylene generation plant, and an acetylene carbon black plant. Clearly, SA Calcium Carbide (Pty) Ltd has a long history of supplying quality calcium carbide to the industries that it proudly serves.

The Bushveld Complex is economically significant and strategically important to South Africa, thus it is imperative that optimal extraction of platinum group metal (PGM) resources on the Bushveld Complex is achieved. Optimal extraction broadly requires that the maximum amount of ore is extracted by excavating and hauling the minimum amount of waste in the shortest possible time, at the least cost, and in the safest and most environmentally acceptable manner. In open-pit mine planning this entails among other things, minimizing the waste stripping ratio, whereas in underground mine planning it includes minimizing the metres of waste development. In conventional mining, the main development that is in waste or partly in waste and defines the mining grid pattern includes levels and raises. It was prudent to consider optimizing level and raise spacing in conventional mining because the method is a prevalent mining method on the Bushveld Complex accounting for nearly 70% of platinum production.

Total milling cost is composed of energy, liner and grinding media costs. In primary high ball load milling, the grinding media play the biggest role in total milling cost. This cost can be drastically reduced by improving the impact condition inside the mill. The impact condition inside the mill is influenced by shell liner design (as well as feed end and discharge design) and the type of discharge. The improvement of the impact condition will result in a significant decrease in grinding media consumption. The softened impact condition allows for better alloy optimization, resulting in a further reduction in grinding media consumption. Optimized liner design can also improve energy consumption as less energy is wasted in the projection of the grinding media. Magotteaux utilizes tools to simulate and show the grinding media trajectories for shell and end liners. This paper will present some practical examples where the media and energy consumption can be or has been reduced by optimizing liner design. Increased chromium levels lead to operating problems. Attempts to increase the chromium solubility in the slag by a variety of techniques create other difficulties. The authors have developed a technique for removal of the chromium spinel interface along with the matte for subsequent separation outside the smelting furnace by utilising differential solidification in the ladle. The process has been patented internationally with support from the Innovation Fund.

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is defined as ‘The goods and services that support the electronic display, processing, storage and transmission of information’. Early in 2002 the South African Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) commissioned a study into the diffusion and adoption of ICT in eight sectors of the economy. The platinum mining Sector was one of these. The key findings presented in this paper are based on the platinum sector component of that study. The paper examines the theoretical basis behind technology transfer and innovation diffusion and presents the results of an ICT diffusion survey carried out in the South African platinum mining sector. ICT is shown as the modern day technological tool which is an accelerator of economic development. The current state of ICT diffusion in the platinum mining sector is defined and projections for the near future are given. Recommendations which will ensure smooth and full adoption are presented and justified.

"*Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc.Eng (Mining Engineering) degreeThe optimization of the cycle time to increase productivity at Ruashi Mining was an on-site project investigation conducted from December 2017 to January 2018. The main objective of the investigation was to determine the actual cycle time components. These comprise the queuing time, loading time, hauling time, and dumping time of ADTs (articulated dump trucks). Data was also collected on two hydraulic shovels to identify where these could be optimized. The actual cycle time obtained was compared to the theoretical cycle time to ascertain the constraints, which affect productivity. By applying Systems Thinking to the cycle time, man-made constraints of the actual cycle time were identified and recommendations to mitigate them suggested to optimize the cycle time. However, rainfall is a natural constraint that adversely affects the actual cycle time, and which cannot be mitigated.In addition, both the theoretical and actual cycle time were analysed, as well as the theoretical and actual productivity for the year 2017. Based on the findings, conclusions and recommendations were made to optimize the cycle time. IntroductionThe aim of the project was to increase Ruashi Mining’s productivity by 39%, from about 7.537 Mt of broken material mined to 12..367 Mt targeted in 2017.BackgroundRuashi Mining is a copper (main commodity), cobalt (by-product), and acid producer located in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), 10 km from the city of Lubumbashi. Figure 1 shows the location of the Ruashi Mining open pit.Ruashi Mining started production in 1911 and in 2005 the mine was registered as a DRC company owned by Metorex Group Limited. In November 2013, the Chinese company Jinchua Group International Resources Co. Ltd. bought a majority stake in the business. Ruashi Mining currently produces 38 000 t of copper and 4400 t of cobalt per annum. The company has contracted NB Mining (a contract mining company) to transport its ore. To optimize the productivity of the mine, considering ore flow delivery at Ruashi Mining, the cycle time is the indicator used in this project. The cycle time components were recorded on site using a stopwatch."

The latest Draft MPRRB was released for public comment in October 2006. The main purpose of the Bill is to collect royalties at mines developed in terms of new-order mineral rights granted through the MPRDA process. The transition phase stipulated in the MPRDA will be completed by 1 May 2009, on which date mineral royalties will become payable to the state. The royalty rates stated in the MPRRB differ from mineral to mineral and also depend on the degree of refinement. Gold is the subject of this paper, where the royalty rate ranges from 1.5% (for refined gold) to 3% (for unrefined gold) of sales revenue. This royalty is payable regardless of profit, with a maximum 75% relief for loss-making mines. The purpose of this paper is to establish whether or not it would be necessary for gold mines to adjust their mineral reserve statements as a result of this Bill. The methodology is to add the royalty costs stipulated in the MPRRB to the actual quarterly information for the past ten years as reported by the gold-mine members of the COM. The rationale is to investigate the impact this Bill (in its current form) would have had on gold reserves that must be left unmined in the ground because of a higher pay limit. The results of the study point to a significant impact on reserves available for mining with the subsequent shortening of mine lives and retrenchment of workers. Had the MPRRB been effective for the 10 years prior to 1996, it would have resulted in 46 tonnes of gold being sterilised. Stated alternatively, 30 700 workers at COM gold mines alone would have lost their livelihoods.

There has been disappointingly little development in the analysis of rock slopes in open pit mines over the past 30 years. A brief review of literature shows that the application of numerical stress analysis methods to open pit mine slope stability has become only relatively common in recent times, and that there are as yet no standardized approaches. The lack of development in general, and of robust, standardized approaches in particular, is surprising in view of the ?ultra? deep open pit mines that are being developed to depths in excess of 1000 m. In this paper, the results of a substantial programme of two dimensional and axisymmetric analyses of open pit slopes are described. Variations in the following parameters were taken into account in this programme: slope angle, slope height and horizontal to vertical in situ stress ratio. The evaluation of the data has concentrated on the tensile stresses and the extension strains in the slopes. This is believed to be the first publication dealing with strain distributions in slopes. The occurrence of zones of tensile stress was very limited. These zones occur in the crests of slopes, except in the case of low horizontal to vertical stress ratios, in which case the tensile zone is in the floor of the pit. In contrast, very large zones of extension strain can occur, and this finding represents a significant new aspect in slope stability that has not been considered before. The greatest magnitudes of extension strain occur near the toe of the slope, either in the slope itself, or in the floor of the pit. The magnitudes of the strains are considered to be large enough to result in fracturing of intact rock, and the fracture orientations predicted are adverse for slope stability. The large zone in which such extension failure could potentially occur in a 1200 m deep pit is typically more than 100 m horizontally behind the toe and about 400 m up the face from the toe. Fracturing that is extension in nature is common in competent, brittle rocks and often develops with some violence and little or no warning. Such ?strain bursting? produces easily measurable seismicity, events often being audible as well. In the slope situation, the expected physical manifestation of this behaviour would be popping off of rock slabs and plates of rock from slope surfaces and popping up of the pit floor, as well as the formation of new fractures within the rock mass. Such behaviour may cause overall slope failure, or may initiate failure, which may then be driven to overall slope failure by other influencing factors or combinations of factors. In addition to instability resulting from the fracture surfaces themselves, all induced fracture surfaces could interact with natural geological structures to facilitate formation of a significant failure surface. With suitably orientated joints, extension strains are likely to manifest themselves in the opening up of such joints and hence in the loosening of the rock mass in a preferential orientation, with potential effects on groundwater flow patterns.

One of the challenging problems for optimization in mining operations is to choose the best equipment among the alternatives. Equipment selection is an important task for mine management due to its operational cost, and is also an integral part of mine planning and design. Equipment selection is not a well-defined process because it involves the interaction of several subjective factors or criteria. Besides, decisions are often complicated and may even embody contradictions. Therefore, equipment selection is considered as a multi-criteria decision-making process, and suitable decision-making methods should be employed in this process. In this study, the loader selection for Aegean Lignite Colliery was made by using both the analytic hierarchy process and Yager’s method. Owing to the misusage of Yager’s method in the past, a new procedure is proposed in this paper for making proper decisions. It is highly recommended in this purposed method that criteria or alternatives should be grouped so as not to exceed the limitations of human performance (nine criteria/alternatives). The most appropriate solution for the loader selection was investigated by obeying this limitation for each method, and the results were compared. At the end of the decision-making process, a sensitivity analysis was applied for each method in order to see how a criterion affects the final decision. The advantages and disadvantages encountered during the application of each decision-making method are presented.

It is estimated that the tailings dam of the Mouteh Gold Mine, in Iran, contains more than 770 kg of gold. Microscopic analysis reveals that sulphide minerals and active carbon are the main sources of the gold in the tailings residue. Flotation and cyanidation tests on the samples of tailings were conducted. Flotation concentrates, containing around 87.79% of the gold, which were associated with sulphide minerals, were recovered. By regrinding, roasting, and cyanidation of the flotation concentrate, the gold dissolution recovery was in the range of 87.8 to 98.4%. "Mine planning software continues to be an important factor when it comes to the development of the South African mining industry. To contribute to this development, a new methodology to define and measure mine planning software utilization in the South African coal mining sector within an evolving data-set framework was developed. An initial data-set showing the mine planning software providers, their corresponding software solutions, as well as the software capabilities and information on the number of licences was collected and compiled in 2012 in an online database for software utilized in the South African mining industry. Details of the database development and implementation were published in the Journal of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in 2013. In 2014 the data-set was updated with additional and new information.In this paper, using the 2012 and 2014 time-stamps, a methodology for estimating the software utilization is developed. In this methodology, three variables: commodity, functionality, and time factor are used to define and measure the software utilization in order to ultimately inform decision making strategies for software utilization. Utilization in the coal sector was measured according to six different functionalities, namely Geological Data Management, Geological Modelling and Resource Estimation, Design and Layout, Scheduling, Financial Valuation and Optimization. The methodology is useful for stakeholders reviewing existing software combinations or intending to purchase new software in the near future and wanting to estimate the comparative attractiveness of a certain software package. These stakeholders include mining companies, consulting companies, educational institutions, and software providers. The work presented in this paper is part of a PhD research study in the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand."

As part of JAGUARS (JApanese-German Underground Acoustic emission Research in South Africa), high-resolution tiltmeters were installed during 2007 at Mponeng gold mine, South Africa, in an attempt to study and understand the risks posed by in-mine seismic events and to subsequently use the knowledge gained to mitigate these risks. In December 2007, an M2.2 event occurred at Mponeng and was detected by the tiltmeters installed. The tilt expected for the M2.2 event is modelled through the use of numerical and analytical tools and utilizing, as input parameters, characteristics of the event such as the rupture area, the amount of slip, elastic properties of the rock, the state of stress before the event occurred, and frictional parameters of the rupture. The calculated tilt values are correlated and compared with the recorded data, and are found to be of the same order. Certain input parameters, such as the initial rupture point, are further constrained by varying them, during modelling, until the calculated and observed tilt values are approximately equal. From modelling, it can be concluded that the rupture point had to be closer to the location of the tiltmeters. In addition, possible locations acting as source areas for the observed aftertilt are determined. Further modelling still needs to be done to quantify the effects of the tunnel close to the tiltmeters and plastic deformation of the rock mass. Since then, the division has become established in various industries such as ferro-alloys and non-ferrous metals, and in numerous other special applications. During the evolution of this technology, more efficient units with longer lifetimes were developed. Today, especially the potential of DC-based smelters, raises worldwide attention, with some projects having already started to implement this kind of technology. This paper evaluates SMS Siemag?s general viewpoint regarding the potential application of DC smelter technology and possible options for the ferro-alloy and non-ferrous industry. SMS Siemag is currently executing a FeCr project in Kazakhstan, where four of the world?s largest closed-type DC smelting furnaces, with a power input of 72 MW, will be installed. These furnaces include the latest technological features of modern DC smelters, which are described in this paper. SMS Siemag has started a long-term research and development project allowing a direct comparison of AC versus DC technology on a large scale, using a recently installed 1 MVA test furnace at the IME at the University of Aachen, in Germany. For open-type ferro-alloy and Si-metal furnaces, SMS Siemag has developed an energy recovery system, which is presented in this paper.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, Bindura, nickel The smelter at Bindura Nickel Corporation processes concentrates from its own mines and other external sources. Concentrates are dried, smelted, and converted to a desulphurised matte (leach alloy) for further processing at the refinery. The smelter comprises a drying plant, submerged arc electric furnace, electrostatic precipitator, and three Peirce-Smith type converters capable of treating 150 000 tonnes of concentrates per year. Concentrates are dried in a rotary coal-fired kiln, blended with fluxes, and smelted in a six-in-line submerged-arc 15MW electric furnace. Slag is tapped and granulated for disposal, and matte is tapped at regular intervals for blowing in Peirce-Smith converters. The paper details the 37-year history of the smelter, including furnace rebuilds and operating parameters as they have evolved in response to changing feed compositions. Special challenges, particularly relating to the treatment of high talc concentrates, are also described.

Gullies are the vital in-stope excavations that provide access for mining personnel and material to, and mined ore from, the producing faces in the tabular hard rock mines. They pose a serious problem in most mines because they induce stress orientations, which, combined with blast damage, produce adverse rock fracture patterns that contribute to the loss of hangingwall and sidewall integrity. Rock-related injury statistics confirm this by highlighting gullies as the second-highest risk area in South African hard rock mines. Inappropriate gully geometries, poor blasting practice, and non-adherence to accepted standards worsen the problem. The aim of this work is, firstly, to provide guidelines to select the correct gully geometry and appropriate support for a particular geotechnical environment and, secondly, to review the practical issues behind gully safety and stability. In order to meet these aims, this paper reviews the available literature on gullies and their history, and reports on an industry-wide survey of practices and opinions. Then it covers observations from underground visits to 107 gullies situated in the respective geotechnical environments of the Basal Reef, Beatrix Reef, Vaal Reef, Carbon Leader Reef, Ventersdorp Contact Reef, Kimberley Reef, Kalkoenkrans Reef, Merensky Reef, and UG2 Reef. Despite the differing geotechnical conditions and gully geometries, common problems are experienced with geological structure, stress, and fracturing. Results from numerical modelling are also presented to help analyse the underground observations and to quantify the merits of the different gully layouts. It is concluded that there are no new techniques available to improve gully stability, but that significant improvements in safety are attainable by employing the correct gully geometry for the geotechnical environment, good blasting practice, and appropriate support.

Investor confidence can be compromised when one observes large discrepancies between the SAMREC reserves and the mining plan. It is therefore up to the responsible persons to ensure that all contributing factors get taken into account when determining a reserve declaration. Confounding factors could be further aggravated by large oscillations in the commodity price thus resulting in major changes to the mining plan, if the accepted price was either too optimistic or pessimistic. Additional factors that must receive our attention are, uncertainty in geological facies type, mining practices, geology and grade estimation. The paper outlines (in the authors? opinion) some of the important factors that need to be taken into account, in order to ensure proper alignment between the estimates of the life of mine (LOM) reserve grades, and the corresponding actualisation of the mining plan. These parameters provide an historical insight into what actually happens when attempts are made to implement the mining envisaged in the LOM plan. In turn these allow judicious application of discount factors that enable a realistic estimate of SAMREC reserve classification and declaration. Some of the factors that will be covered are: - 1) Flexibility of developed reserves and the ability to maintain this. 2) Mining control mechanisms and their overall efficacy. 3) The ability to extrapolate facies types and its effect on grade control. 4) The ability to control the mining mix and value variation. 5) Finding a happy medium between optimism and pragmatism.

This paper discusses the comparative performances of the three activated carbon adsorption circuits at the West Wits operations of Anglogold. These circuits consist of two pump-cell circuits (at Two Plant, formerly Elandsrand and at Three plant) and a conventional counter-current adsorption circuit (at Mponeng plant). The implications of the improved performance of the pump-cell plants are discussed.

In the Integrated IT Systems proposed by Przedsie? biorstwo Robót Geologiczno-Wiertniczych—Geological and Drilling Company (PRGW) a network connects a database with all of the departments of a mining division. A key element thereof is the common graphics environment—Micro Station supplied by the firm, Bentley. PRGW’s SoftMine software and GMSI’s CadsMine that are used to design and schedule mining operate in this environment. The digital form of the design project facilitates the verification of information and the integration of technical solutions with SAP R/3 type financial—accounting systems. The system has been successfully implemented in the Brown Coal Mine in Poland.

"The Zambian Copper mining industry as we know it today has its genesis from early in the 20th century in the 1920s. Consistent private sector-driven investment in the industry over a period of over 50 years in exploration, mine development and operation, development of minerals processing facilities, building of infrastructure for pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processing, with attendant support facilities, including building of whole new towns, resulted in copper production going from zero to a peak of 769 000 tons of copper in 1969. At the same time, the industry created jobs to the extent that in 1972 the industry had over 62 000 direct jobs. The industry was nationalized in 1973 and remained in government hands for just over 24 years. During this period, the industry experienced a serious decline in production levels, reaching the lowest level at the dawn of the 21st century in the year 2000 when production was 250 000 tons. In terms of jobs, an average of just under 2000 jobs were lost every year in the 24-year period, reaching just over 22 000 direct jobs in 2000. Following the return of Zambian politics to pluralism and liberalized economic policies, the government decided to privatize the mining industry. The process started in 1996 and by the year 2000 all the mining assets had been privatized. The new investors embarked on serious investment to upgrade the assets and to develop greenfield mining projects. Fourteen years later and investments of over USD 12 billion, the industry production levels increased year- on-year to reach a peak of 763 000 tons in 2013 with direct jobs reaching 90 000. This paper discusses the impact of the mining industry in Zambia on the economy in areas such as employment, support to other industries, direct contribution to the national gross domestic product (GDP), foreign exchange earnings and social amenities. The paper also focuses on the performance of the mines during these periods vis-à-vis mineral availability, mineral grades and complexity, new technologies and human capital. This is looked at particularly in the light of current challenges the industry is facing and makes suggestions on how the industry can be nurtured to continue being a major driver for the Zambian economy and a major player in the international copper mining business."

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, blast furnace, slag viscosity, slag liquidus temperature, phase equilibria The viscosity of molten slag in blast furnace operations is an important process variable, influencing the rate and location of reactions inside the furnace, as well as the ease with which the final slag could be removed from the furnace. To optimize these processes, it is necessary to estimate the slag viscosity and liquidus temperatures as accurately as possible, and know the target values. Models to predict viscosities and liquidus temperatures, incorporating phase equilibrium calculations, have been developed and validated with measured data. Various diagrams have been developed to illustrate how the properties vary with composition and temperature, including pseudo-ternary diagrams of SiO2-MgO-CaO-Al2O3 for viscosity and liquidus temperature. Models were also applied and methodologies developed to analyse historical blast furnace operations and determine target values.
