"*Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B.Eng(Mining Engineering) degreeAfriTin Mining Limited plans to reopen the Uis tin mine in Namibia and establish a pilot processing plant for phase 1 of the Uis tin project, which is scheduled to commence in the last quarter of 2018 . A mining plan is required for phase 1 to supply the new pilot processing plant with 500 kt of run-of-mine ore per annum, for a period of 5 years. New geological mapping and three-dimensional modelling of the mining area were utilized to identify the most optimal mining locations that require low initial waste stripping. An open-pit mining method was selected to target the surface outcrops of the pegmatite orebodies. The mine design criteria were determined and used as input to generate the mine design by utilizing professional engineering software. The mine design was optimized and an overall stripping ratio of 0.81 was achieved. A 5-year production schedule was developed for the mine design according to quarterly periods of three months. A fixed production target of 125 kt of ore was assigned to the quarterly periods, and a ramp-up production target of 65 kt of ore was assigned for the first period. The mobile mining equipment requirements were calculated, and recommendations were made for implementing the 5-year mining plan. IntroductionAfriTin Mining Limited is the owner of the Uis tin project in Namibia and plans to reopen the Uis tin mine, which is located near the town of Uis, approximately 164 km north of Swakopmund. The Uis tin mine was owned and operated by Imkor Tin, a subsidiary of Iscor South Africa. Mining commenced in 1958, and the operation was closed in 1991. Steffen Robertson & Kirsten (SRK) defined the life of mine (LOM) plan for the historical Uis mine in 1989. The SRK report estimated the historical resources and reserves, which consisted of sixteen cassiterite-bearing pegmatite orebodies. SRK developed the most economical pit designs to provide the highest average tin grade at the lowest practical waste stripping ratio. Exploration data from the SRK report of 1989 was used extensively throughout this study, since no new exploration drilling has been conducted. The pegmatites are present as large, subvertical and outcropping veins up to 100 m in thickness. Once phase 1 is operational, mining will be conducted using conventional open pit mining methods. Initial production will be from exposed pegmatite veins in the old mine workings. AfriTin plans to establish a pilot processing plant by the end of 2018 to beneficiate run-of-mine ore at a rate of 500 kt per annum."

A number of impending and actual pit wall failures have been observed and documented which have been interpreted to initiate on newly generated structural features. This infers failure through intact rock. Failure mechanisms have been postulated resulting from circumferential stress, extensional strain and brittle flexure. These will be discussed in the context of the failures and the associated monitoring. The implications of failure initiating on ?unknown? features has a significant impact for deep open pit mines where designs are based on the expected structural regime. Being able to anticipate such failures is important for design. Equally important is management of such changes as they arise. In this context, monitoring using high resolution microseismic techniques will be discussed as a means of providing early warning of such failures.

This paper proposes the further development of a recently identified shear rupture mechanism (fan mechanism) that elucidates a paradoxical feature of hard rocks ? the possibility of shear rupture propagation through a highly confined intact rock mass at shear stresses that can be significantly less than frictional strength. In the fan mechanism, failure is associated with consecutive creation of small slabs (known as ?domino blocks?) from the intact rock in the rupture tip, driven by a fan-shaped domino structure representing the rupture head. The fan head combines such unique features as extremely low shear resistance, self-sustaining stress intensification, and self-unbalancing conditions. Consequently, the failure process caused by the mechanism is inevitably spontaneous and violent. Physical and mathematical models explain unique and paradoxical features of the mechanism, which can be generated in primary ruptures and segmented faults. The fan mechanism provides a novel point of view for understanding the nature of spontaneous failure processes, including shear rupture rockbursts. The process explains, in particular, features of shear rupture rockbursts such as activation at great depths, generation of new shear ruptures in intact rock mass, nucleation of hypocentres at significant distances from the excavation, shear rupture development at low shear stresses, and abnormal rupture violence.

The selection of stripping dragline is a complicated problem. Several factors, such as the deposit buried conditions, the demand of mine production rate, cast blasting result, the mining/stripping operation method and parameters, etc. may comprehensively influence the optimal selection of technical specifications of the dragline. Under these circumstances, the basic thinking and procedures for dragline selection are put forward as follows. •Step 1—Initially estimate the dragline annual stripping rate and stripping bench height according to the annual coal production rate and advancing speed of mining front. Then the feasible alternatives of dragline sizes can be calculated and selected from the existing dragline series. •Step 2—A computer simulation model is developed to simulate the dragline stripping operation, to obtain a series of working face parameters, then to select the best dragline alternative. This step can be interactively iterated until the satisfactory results are obtained. •Step 3— Sensitivity analysis can be done with the systems simulation model by changing the stripping bench parameters, e.g. stripping bench height and cut width, etc. to verify and modify the selection results if necessary. The mathematical model for dragline stripping simulation has been set up. The flowchart of the model is shown. A case study for a large surface coal mine with annual production rate of 16 Mt/a is followed. The dragline bucket capacity and operation radius, stripping bench height and cut width as well as other parameters are comprehensively optimized and selected. Risk quantification in grade-tonnage curves is critical for capital investment in mining projects and can be obtained through geostatistical simulations of orebodies. A practical difficulty may arise in multi-element deposits, as the joint modelling of the related attributes using the traditional co-simulation approaches is computationally intensive and may be impractical for use in the industrial environment. This paper presents the construction of risk-integrating grade-tonnage curves for a complex copper deposit in northern Brazil, by jointly simulating its key geochemical attributes of interest: Cu, Fe and K. The joint conditional simulation of these elements is based on Minimum/Maximum Autocorrelation Factors (MAF). MAF is an approach, based on principal components, that spatially decorrelates the variables involved to non-correlated factors. MAF’sspatial decorrelation at any lag distance is the main and critical difference of this approach from the principal component approach attempted in the past. In the MAF approach, the independent factors are individually simulated and back-transformed to the conditional simulations of the correlated deposit attributes that reproduce the cross-correlations of the original variables. Penetration and dissolution mechanisms are reviewed for predominantly single-phase oxide, two phase oxide and oxide-carbon composite refractories by liquid silicate slags. Theoretical models of these processes, as well as static (sessile drop, dipping and crucible) and dynamic (rotating finger and rotary slag) experimental tests, along with their practical limitations are considered. Direct (congruent or homogeneous) attack is controlled by the reaction rate at the slag-refractory interface or the rate of diffusive transport of species to it through the slag leading to active corrosion. Indirect (incongruent or heterogeneous) attack is controlled by diffusive transport through the slag or through a new solid phase, which forms at the original slag-refractory interface. This may lead to passive corrosion. Examples of direct and indirect attack in a range of refractory/slag systems are described highlighting the critical influence of the composition and hence viscosity of the local liquid slag adjacent the solid refractory. Penetration and corrosion can be controlled either through the local slag composition via the refractory or the bulk slag or by microstructural control of the refractory by e.g. internal generation of dense layers or external deposition/generation of passive coatings, so-called in situ refractories.

Testwork at Goedehoop Colliery showed that fine coal, essentially?150 microns can be successfully beneficiated using froth flotation. Both conventional and column flotation were tested. It was found that the traditional stirred tank type of flotation machines used in conventional flotation produced the best recovery of fine coal. After extensive testwork it was decided to develop a flotation machine on Goedehoop Colliery that would combine stirred tank and quiescent column technology. It was thought that this design would give the best combination of recovery and selectivity. The Multicell was developed and is producing results acceptable for Witbank coal flotation. The Akanvaara intrusion (surface area 50-55 km2) in Savukoski, Northern Finland, hosts 23 distinct monocumulate layers of small euhedral chromite crystals enclosed in a silicate matrix. These chromitite layers have been divided into four groups; UC (upper chromitite), ULC (uppermost lower chromitite) LC (lower chromitite) and LLC (lowermost lower chromitite). The driving force for investigating the Akanvaara chromites and their reduction behaviour originated from their very low MgO content and relatively low Al2O3 content, giving them a unique quality which based on thermodynamics should facilitate the reduction. Another interesting feature is the high amount of V2O3 present especially in the upper chromitite. The chromites included in this study are from the UC and ULC layers (24.9 and 22.7 per cent Cr2O3 respectively). To obtain a better understanding of the reduction behaviour of Akanvaara samples in comparison to MgO-bearing chromitites, Kemi chromite from the ferrochrome works in Tornio, Finland, was included in the study as a reference sample. The reduction experiments were isothermal in a temperature range of 1000-1400°C in CO atmosphere. Experiments were also conducted with coke addition in pellets and briquettes in CO/Ar/H2 atmospheres. The results of the reduction experiments complemented with microanalytical research indicate that the Akanvaara chromites do reduce to a higher degree than the Kemi chromite. Although the aim was to characterize the mechanisms of reduction focusing on gas-solid reactions, the nature and amount of the gangue minerals was such that a considerable amount of slag phase was formed, which affected the reduction mechanisms extensively. The structural features together with low MgO and high FeO content in both Akanvaara chromites are important factors resulting in better reducibility than in the Kemi chromite.

Steel is the most versatile material which has made the progress in every aspect on this earth possible. There are hundreds of varieties of steel because for each application it has to be made with specific properties to get the most optimum usage. It is well known that the basic constituent of steel is iron. But it is the proportion of other elements in it, which give each type of steel certain specific properties. These elements are added in liquid iron inform of Ferro alloys to get the desired composition and properties. Thus, Ferro alloys are important additives in the production of steel. It can be said that no steel can be made without use of one or more of the several Ferro alloys. They form the backbone of steel. Thus, the Ferro alloys industry is vitally linked for its growth and development to that of the steel industry. Ferro alloys industry in India has never been globally competitive, despite its rich ore deposits and low-cost manpower, essentially due to a) Insufficient availability and high cost of electric power b) Increasing ores and reductants cost c) Non-availability of low ash, low phos. coking coal in the country for the production of desired coke with low ash, and low phos. contents, making import of such coke at a high cost imperative d) High-cost and insufficient infrastructural facilities (both road and rail) for rapid transportation of ore from mines to plants e)Stiff competition from producers and exporters of Ferro alloys in other countries like South Africa, Kazakhstan, China, Russia, Australia etc. due to global trade agreement which has made drastic reduction in customs duty on imports necessary. f) Wide fluctuations in the International price of Ferro alloys depending on demand versus supply. To over come these challenges plus adhering to stringent pollution control norms innovations are inevitable in the process technology, and plant equipment design, along with frequent changes in product mix, to be more cost-effective. An attempt is made in this paper to address the innovations that took place in the past and those that further need to be made, considering the future of this industry.

(Extractive Metallurgy)degree The concepts behind support vector machines are very interesting both in theory and in practice, as they are based on a universal constructive learning procedure derived from the statistical learning theory developed by Vapnik. In this paper, their application to time series modelling is considered by means of simulated data from an autocatalytic reactor. In particular, reconstruction methods from non-linear dynamics are used to define a state space model for the process. "This paper provides guidelines on performing mass and energy balance modelling involving coal and coal derivatives. Usually, the inputs to a pyrometallurgical process would be specified in terms of elements and compounds. Reliable thermochemical data is more widely available for species involving uniquely defined, relatively smaller molecules. However, in the case of coal, the molecules are extremely large and not uniquely defined. Consequently, modelling processes involving coal and its derivatives involve several potential pitfalls. These are outlined in the present paper.It was found that coal proximate analysis should not be regarded as absolute; it could vary with several parameters, including heating rate. For modelling, the use of ultimate analyses should be considered a preferable option to proximate analyses, where ‘fixed carbon’ and ‘volatiles’ are not defined in terms of chemical composition. Significant errors could be incurred if the larger molecules are neglected during calculation of the calorific value (CV) of coal gas (the gas liberated when coal is heated in the absence of oxygen).For elemental analysis determination, the oxygen content (which is calculated by balance) should be checked to ensure it is within the expected range. For representation of sulphur in coal, one should avoid doublecounting due to SO3 in the ash analysis.Potentially, oxygen in coal could be represented as O2, H2O, CO, or CO2.However, use of some of these species without considering the experimentally determined gross CV leads to significant errors in the energy balance. If coal enthalpy is calculated from elemental analyses without correction, representation of coal oxygen as H2O(l) gives reasonable accuracy. Coal volatiles could be represented by a complex mixture of compounds, even using different oxygen-containing species than these four, provided the enthalpy is corrected.It is recommended that an ‘enthalpy correction value’ be incorporated in energy balances involving combustion, devolatilization, or conversion of coal and coal derivatives, e.g. coke, char, or tar. That would imply that proximate analysis, elemental analysis, as well as the gross CV would be required for all solid or liquid coal-derived substances being modelled. No other correction due to carbon being present in a form other than graphite should be used, as that would imply double-counting some effects."

Titanium aluminide of composition Ti-47.5 at.% Al was prepared by melting titanium and aluminium of commercial purity with additions of precious metals of 0, 0.2, 1, 1.5 and 2 at.% content. The microstructure, hardness and oxidation properties were assessed. It was found that at 47.5 at.% Al, the microstructure of plain TiAl alloys was duplex, consisting of duplex lamellar grains and ? grains. The lamellar grains consisted of alternating lamellae of ? (TiAl) and a2(Ti3Al), with overall aluminium content in the range of 43?47 at.%. The ? grains had a aluminium content above 50 at.%. The addition of precious metals to the TiAl alloy resulted in the formation of a new phase, with a high precious metal content, occurring mostly in the ?phase, without any major change to the microstructure. Increasing the amount of precious metals resulted in an increase of the new phase amount, at the expense of the ? phase. The hardness of the different alloys was around 300HV10. Overall, the research has shown that addition of precious metals to TiAl resulted in a slight increase in hardness and a significant improvement of the oxidation resistance. This shows that alloying TiAl with precious metals, at the addition levels investigated, does not alter the mechanical properties very much, but improves oxidation resistance.

The purpose of the investigation was to assess various options for increasing the efficiency of the conveyor belt transporting system used at 4 Belt Shaft at Lonmin?s Marikana operations. The reason for the investigation was to prevent the occurrence of a ?bottleneck? at the main ore passes delivering ore to the conveyor belt system, thus creating more fluent operational conditions. The options assessed for increasing the efficiency of the conveyor belt transporting system were: ?Variation of the conveyor speed ?Concurrent tipping from two ore passes on the belt ?Increase the available drive unit power ?Increasing the feed rate from vibratory feeders ?Change in belt width/belt specifications The report shows that the most preferable option to the current situation at 4 Belt, Lonmin, would be the option of concurrent tipping from two ore passes to the belt.

The principal goal of the research described in the paper was to determine, by measurement of pillar scaling on pillars that have not failed, whether the pillar life prediction method developed by van der Merwe (2003) was valid as it stood or whether adjustments were necessary to the rates indirectly derived from observation of failed pillars. To this end, measurements were taken on over 350 pillars at 13sites on 6 mines. The project was done as a collaborative effort between the University of Pretoria, the Nancy School of Mines and CSIR Miningtek. During the course of the investigation, it was found that the majority of pillars display maximum scaling at mid height, that there was no clear preferential direction of pillar scaling, and that pillar corners do not scale significantly more than the mid pillar areas. The most important conclusion was that the scaling rates found by measurement agreed with the inferred rates found in the previous work. The previously developed procedure for the prediction of pillar life spans consequently requires no adjustment, although the error span is in the region of 20%. It is recommended to do further research into the effect of sealing of panels and, possible chemical changes taking place in the pillars as they age on the scaling rate.

This paper discusses a study that investigated different underground bulk air heat exchanger (>100 m3/s) design criteria. A literature review found that no single document exists covering all design criteria for different heat exchangers, and therefore the need was identified to generate a guideline with decision analyser steps to arrive at a technical specification. The study investigated the factors influencing heat exchanger designs (spray chambers, towers, and indirect-contact heat exchangers) and the technical requirements for each. The decision analysers can be used to generate optimized, user-friendly fit-for-purpose designs for bulk air heat exchangers (air cooler and heat rejection). The study was tested against a constructed air cooler and heat rejection unit at a copper mine1. It was concluded that the decision analysers were used successfully. This tool (decision analysers) can be used by engineers for the efficient and cost-effectively design of heat exchangers.

"As demand for copper and precious metals continues to grow, the need to develop new supplies increases. In the imminent future, the new large global ore bodies are more complex, with enargite, tennantite and tetrahedrite as the abundant contained mineralogy. These resources also contain considerable gold and silver. As such, direct treatment by conventional smelting is prohibitive due to the potential environmental impacts and copper quality issues. This paper outlines the effective application and associated economics of industrially proven Alkaline Sulfide Leaching (ASL) hydrometallurgical technology to an enargite concentrate for selective removal and recovery of arsenic, antimony, gold and silver, leaving a clean high-grade copper concentrate. The fundamentals behind the technology are described, along with those of hydrometallurgical arsenic fixation and stabilization. Flowsheets and unit operations are elucidated, along with an in-depth economic analysis. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical methods can be employed for treatment of gold-, arsenic-, antimony-, tin- and mercury-containing materials, concentrates and ores, as well as complex ones containing any number of metals (Conner & Anderson, 2013). The alkaline sulfide leaching (ASL) system is one of these. It is essentially a mixture of sodium sulfide and sodium hydroxide with other meta-stable alkaline species as required. This is a unique hydrometallurgical system beause it is a very selective lixiviant for the distinct leaching of tin, gold, antimony, arsenic, tellurium, silver and mercury (Anderson, 2000, 2001a, 2001b, 2002, 2003, 2012, 2014; Anderson & Twidwell, 2008a, 2008b, 2010; Anderson et al., 2004, 2005; Glazkov & Tseft, 1961; Gnatyshenko & Polyvyanni, 1961; Nadkarni et al., 1975; Nadkarni & Kusik, 1988; Polyvyanni, 1963). Worldwide, ASL technology has been employed industrially in the former CIS, China and the United States for the production of antimony (Anderson et al., 1992, 1994; Anderson & Krys, 1993; Holmes, 1944; Kaloc, 1967; Nordwick & Anderson, 1993; van Stein, 1971)."

Often plant performance suffers as a result of poor control. Poor control leads to low mill throughputs, poor classification and less than satisfactory concentrate grades and overall recoveries. By using the appropriate control tools, substantial gains in plant performance can be made. Mintek?s MillStar and FloatStar controllers have been implemented at various sites across the world. The MillStar controller incorporates leading technology that controls process units from the mill feed through to the flotation feed. Typical results show that milling circuit throughput is increased by 6-10 % and the final product grind size is tightly controlled, thereby enhancing flotation performance. The FloatStar controller is aimed at stabilising and optimising flotation circuits. Through improved level control alone, recovery improvements of up to 1 % have been achieved. Furthermore, by using on-line grade analysers, the controller stabilises final concentrate grades, whilst maximising flotation recovery.

Over the last few years Lonmin Platinum and Sandvik have embarked on a unique partnership of collaboration through a systematic approach to developing equipment to mechanize and automate narrow reef platinum mining. After the initial design and manufacture of the equipment the key aspect is the integrating equipment, people and method into a mining system. Another key a spec of mechanization is the optimization of equipment utilization and this philosophy has ensured continual evolvement of mining methods. Safety nets have been used selectively in several South African mines over the years. Recently, however, an increased emphasis on mine safety has seen a resurgence of their utilization underground. This renewed interest has, however, also raised questions about the design and performance of these nets and their practical applications underground; these are the subjects of this paper. Generally, mine safety nets are used to protect personnel from falling rock in temporarily supported development ends, tunnels, ASGs and stopes. These diverse applications each require specific net designs, resulting in a wide product range. As a rule, however, mine safety nets need to carry specified static or dynamic loads with the least possible deformation. Because of the application-specific characteristics of mine safety nets, there is no South African national standard for them. Consequently, neither the SABS, nor the CSIR, performs standard tests on these components. In 2007, therefore, SIMRAC made available their Savuka facility for the testing of mine safety nets; the Savuka drop test became the accepted industry test standard for mine safety nets. From late 2007 to mid 2009, Norsenet, in collaboration with SRK Consulting, the designated operators of the site, conducted approximately 200 tests, which formed the core of Norsenet's database of safety net performance under various loading conditions. The test specimens comprised a wide range of net materials and config¬urations; the materials included: high density polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, nylon, as well as a blend of polyester and polypropylene used primarily for reinforcement ropes. Net configurations encompassed the following parameters: net type, i.e., knotted nets or sewn nets; net strand type, i.e., braids, twines, or webbing; strand size; mesh size; mesh orientation, i.e., parallel or oblique to the net edge; net edge reinforcement, i.e., knotted, tied, with or without reinforcement ropes; internal reinforcement ropes, i.e., diagonal ropes and/or orthogonal ropes; as well as net attachment options, including loops and chainlinks. From the number of variables listed above, and the limited number of tests available, it can be appreciated that the findings of the test series required careful scrutiny. Nevertheless, principal performance factors clearly emerged: besides the obvious net mesh variables, such as net strand material, strand diameter and mesh size, it was the configuration of the reinforcement ropes and their attachment to the net panel which had the strongest influence on net performance. All the structural elements of a safety net need to work together to transfer the imposed load from the net panel, through the reinforcement ropes, to the net attachment points. In this load transference chain, the weakest link limits the strength of the structure. From this development work, Norsenet has gained valuable expertise to custom-design and manufacture nets to clients' specifications. The examples presented in the paper will also show the experience acquired in the installation of nets underground. Future work will include the establishment of a state-of-the-art net testing facility at Norsenet's factory in Vredenburg..
