Austempered ductile iron (ADI) is a ductile iron which has had its matrix toughened by an austempering process. The alloy exhibits remarkable properties, which it owes to a unique microstructure comprising graphite nodules embedded in a matrix of acicular ferrite and carbon-enriched austenite. The properties include high strength combined with high toughness and ductility. Excellent wear resistance is also exhibited because, under strain, the austenite is transformed locally to martensite. Samples of ductile iron were austempered to produce grades I and IV AD!, and were tested at various strain rates. The grade IV ADI exhibited higher strengths and lower difficulties, and the strengths were found to be more dependent on strain rate. Transformation to martensite was more prevalent at the lower strain rates. A mechanism of increased flow stress and work hardening in the austenite of the matrix is proposed to explain the higher strength of the samples at high strain rates, where significantly less martensite is formed in the matrix.

Formulae expressing the dependence of the mass of a grinding ball on the amount of material milled by a ball mill are derived. It is shown that, with the aid of these formulae, it is relativel rsimple for the results of a marked-ball test to be analysed and for the relative performance and cost-effectiveness 0 the various types of ball under test to be evaluated. Predictions based on theory and the results obtained in a marked-ball test in a ball mill are compared detail and shown to be in close agreement. The difficulties associated with marked-ball tests are considered, and an explanation for the decrease in the calculated consumption of the balls, which follows naturally from the theory, is presented. The marked-ball anomaly explained, and it is demonstrated that the ball consumption in a ball mill can be predicted with fair accuracy from the results of a marked-ball test.

Accurate models of mill power are becoming more necessary as the design, operational, and control requirements for grinding mills become more stringent. Models of mill power are reviewed briefly, and a new semi-phenomenological model is derived. The conventional torque-arm model for mill power is combined with a model of the tendency of the load in a mill to centrifuge at high speeds, to describe mill power that can be related to several design variables (such as mil geometry, mill speed, and liner design) and control variables (such as load volume, slurry rheology, and mill speed in the case of variable-speed milling). The semiphenomenological nature of the model allows rational conclusions to be reached concerning the effect of various aspects of mill-load behaviour on mill power. The model is shown to be capable of describing reality with much greater accuracy than is achieved by empirical models such as the Bond model.

The amount of nitrogen contained in an austenitic stainless steel affects its properties significantly. The maximum content of nitrogen feasible in a range of experimental low-nickel austenitic stainless steels containing significant additions of copper is evaluated The nitrogen content is calculated based on published interaction coefficients, and by use of the FACT thermodynamic computer program and database. The differences between the two methods of prediction can be attributed to inaccuracies in the published interaction coefficients. The calculated nitrogen contents of some experimental alloys are compared with the actual nitrogen contents obtained when the alloys were produced in an induction furnace. The actual nitrogen contents obtained were higher than those predicted by either method, and this is believed to be due to a super saturation of nitrogen occurring in the melt, which was not relieved during the short period in which the charge was molten. It was evident that the experimental alloys can contain between 0,25 and 0,40 per cent nitrogen (depending on temperature, composition, and nitrogen pressure) when melted in a sealed induction furnace, and this is more than adequate for the purpose of forming and stabilizing the austenite phase.

Photometric sorting of ore on a South African gold mine by N. J. KEYS. B.E. Met. (Queensland) (Visitor). R. J. GORDON. (Visitor). And N. F. PEVERETT. B.Sc. (Eng.) (Wits) (Fellow) This paper concerns the development and application of a high-throughput, multi-stream photometric sorting machine developed for the South African gold mines. It is now believed that this sorter and its progeny may be found suitable for a large proportion of all possible sorting applications. A laser-light source and sensitive photomultiplier are employed in a scanning system to detect light reflected from the surfaces of rocks passing through the sorting zone. Electronic circuitry then analyses the photomultiplier signal, which represents the varying intensity of the reflected light, and produces control signals to actuate the appropriate valves of an array of air-blast rejection devices to remove from the feed certain particles selected by the analysing process. Typical throughput per machine ranges from 50 t/h for a minus 60mm plus 30mm feed to 200 t/h for minus 150mm plus 70mm material.

SYNOPSIS The key reactions of the copper segregation process have been studied with a view to establishing the kinetics of the system. The investigation was carried out using two refractory copper ores from the Zambian Copperbelt in a small-scale, fluidized bed, chloridization reactor. The rate of chloridization of the copper in the ores is compared with the rate of volatilization of the cuprous chloride produced and with the rate of reduction of the cuprous chloride to form segregated metallic copper. In conjunction with available data on the rate of production of hydrogen chloride in a segregation system and with due regard to the conditions applicable in a TORCO reactor, it is concluded that the chloridization reaction is the major rate limiting step of the process. Factors influencing the rate of this extraction step and aspects of its mechanism are examined. The findings have confirmed the validity of the existing theory of segregation and provide insight as to the viability of the system of reactions involved in the copper segregation phenomenon. Experimental results which relate to observations made in the course of TORCO plant operation and segregation studies are discussed.

Automation of mining operations is pushed by cost pressure and cyclical product prices. However, until now the different types of equipment were not able to communicate electronically with each other or with central computer systems. Therefore, the International Rock Excavation Data Exchange Standard (IREDES) was launched by major players in the industry. The task of this initiative is to define a ‘common electronic language’ for easy and standardized data exchange. As in other industries, this standard is expected to have significant impact on the use of automation in general and on the markets for third party components and software. The standard’s technical architecture is open and flexible for future applications. It consists of an ‘horizontal’ structure defining ‘Application Profiles’ for different types of data sets. An additional ‘vertical’ structure (‘Equipment Profiles’) implements equipment dependent definitions for each of the applicable Application Profiles. First profiles will be available for Drill Rigs. The standard bases on the XML language thus enabling easy data exchange with commercial databases. IREDES data sets may use storage media as well as networking infrastructures for information exchange. The IREDES work is carried out by the initiative members working jointly together in the IREDES work groups. It is open for participation of all interested organizations. First prototyping applications are expected to start during 2001, the first products may be available in the following year. Two very successful schools on 'The design and operation of plants for the recovery of gold by activated carbon', were held from 14th to 18th October, 1985, and from 24th to 27th February, 1986, at Mintek. They were arranged by the Institute in close co-operation with Mr. Peter Bailey of Gencor, who was course leader. Computers and mathematics APCOM 87, the 20th International Symposium of the Application of Computers and Mathematics in the Mineral Industries, is to be held in Johannesburg from 19th to 23rd October, 1987. Interested people are invited to submit titles and synopses in any of the following topics or others. Papers can cover theoretical developments, practical applications, case studies, and software and hardware systems. Centrifugal slurry pump station and deposition sites are a common feature of many mines and mineral processing plants. Yanacocha Mine has completed the design of a pump station consisting of two trains of four pumps each. A number of trade-off studies was conducted to optimize the pump station design. The most significant of these was determining the drive types for the slurry pumps. The pump station duty can vary considerably due to the number of deposition points round the disposal site. The standard solution to this problem on a multi-stage pump train is to install one pump with a variable speed drive to control the pump station output by varying the speed of this pump and stopping and starting other stages. However, there are a number of negative impacts associated with this approach. These include head losses through pumps that are stationary or ?wind-milling?, different wear life on pumps that are running and pumps that are stationary, and slower response to the control system with the possibility of hunting. The use of variable speed drives on all the pumps was considered as an alternative to the standard solution. The factors considered in comparing these options were the control and operational differences, the pump efficiencies and absorbed power, the expected pump wear life, the impact on pump maintenance and the cost of the drive options. For this project the option of using all variable speed drives was selected. The paper presents the following aspects of the study: ?Description of the various options investigated. This includes a discussion on the required duty and the drive options. ?Technical comparison between the options. ?Description of the factors influencing pump performance and life.

It is generally accepted that South African coal mines have gone through the mechanization of most of its underground mines, and while there certainly were a lot of productivity improvements, the lack of visibility on these machines operating underground still leave vast areas for improvement. The average actual cutting time still remains very low, in the 30 per cent area, which leaves significant improvement possible. Currently all analysis is carried out using hand-written reports. Unfortunately this is subjective and often inaccurate because of human interpretation. In addition in order to avoid costly component failure, a monitoring system is required to warn of eminent failures and condition monitoring. The challenge faced was to supply and install a system that was ‘Open’ and could be retrofitted to existing machines in operation because of the current standard of communication links to the underground sections. In addition it was intended to use, existing ‘off the shelf’ software and hardware and adapting this for the harsh underground mining conditions wherever possible in order to reduce costs. As development occurred, as with all technology, doors opened to other opportunities such as, remote access data logging and Internet based reporting. We focused on the Voest Alpine Bergtechnik (VA) range of continuous miners, as need arose to achieve the desired cost improvements because of the strategy of service contracts the subsidiary company, Voest Alpine Mining & Tunnelling (VAMT) offer the mining industry in South Africa. This paper describes a data logging system that has been installed on various continuous miners that provides data in real time, on line, and that could be expanded to any electrically supplied underground mobile or stationary mining machine.

The Centenary Distinguished Lecture was held on Thursday, 24th March, 1994 at the Convention Centre of the Sandton Sun, Johannesburg at 20:00. Herewith the proceedings that followed. P.R. Janisch: The South African Institute of Mining and Metalurgy began life one hundred years ago tonight, and eight years (almost to the day) after the 1886 discovery of gold, which has impacted so profoundly on the course of events in our country since then. The Early Years That discovery was a mater of fortune, but not in the sense of the conventional prospector's lucky strike. Canny explorers, such as the Strubens, had been around for some years and, if George Harrison had not stumbled over the Main Reef when he did, someone else would surely have done so within months. The element of luck was that the gold-bearing rocks of the Witwatersrand actually lay exposed to sight. We now know that they are something of the order of 2,5 billion years old. Rocks of that age are usually covered by younger formations. In fact, the bulk of the Witwatersrand Basin is covered by lava, dolomite, and Karoo measures. What, one wonders, would our history have been had the Karoo, which stops at the Vaal, extended no more than 60 kilometres further north. Dr H. Scot-Russell A piece of advice attributed to Paul Kruger, the who was President of the South African Republic one hundred years ago, was the following: 'Seek from the past that which is good, and build on it for the future'. It is advice that can be applied universally and, whether deliberately or not, it must have motivated my predecessors when this Institute celebrated its 40th, 50th, and 75th birthdays. Those milestones were each marked by retrospectives, as Peter Janisch has so ably presented tonight on our hundredth anniversary. The parallels do not end there. We find ourselves in times no less daunting than those our predecessors. Next month will see the birth of a new kind of South Africa; so did May 1902, May 1919, and May 1948.

I appreciate the honour that has been bestowed upon me by my election as President of this Institute. We are starting what I believe will be a challenging year. The first challenge facing the Institute is financial. From the accounts for you will note that the Institute operated at a loss for the first time since 1987. average membership subscription was increased by only 10 per cent, reflecting desire to keep costs down in the minerals industry. The Institute will therefore to rely on other income to meet its budget requirements and break even financially. source of these funds will be the activities of the Technical Programme Committees. disciplines-Mining, Extraction Metallurgy, and Metals Technology are planning programmes for the coming year. I urge al members to increase their support of colloquia schools. Increased membership would also bring in more funds. Please, therefore, encourage colleagues who are not yet members of the Institute to join it.

A decision by joint-venture partners Anglo American, Gencor, and the Industrial Development Corporation to proceed with the expansion of the Columbus Stainless Steel plant in Middelburg will contribute significantly towards the economic growth that South Africa needs so desperately. The expanded facility, expected to come on-line in 1995, will be the largest single-plant producer of stainless steel in the world, and the company will rank sixth overall in world production.

"A new approach is proposed to perform relativistic comparisons between alternative operational risk management solutions by taking into account the impact of each operational activity on overall system performance. A specific case study, to which this new approach is applied, involves the deployment of safety systems in underground mining operations. Conflicting objectives to be satisfied are the minimization of risk to human lives and the minimization of production losses. As the focus in this case is primarily on the mitigation of risk, the approach that was applied is referred to as activity-based risk (ABR) analysis. Existing development process and risk management methods used in the South African mining environment were analysed by means of observations, a case study, technical documentation, and literature review. It was evident from this analysis that a discontinuity existed between the acquisition and operational phases in terms of the management of safety risk in the acquisition of electronic safety equipment when viewed from a full lifecycle perspective. This discontinuity could be addressed by defining a risk perspective in the system development phase by employing ABR in the preliminary design phase of a system’s engineering life-cycle. The focus of the ABR system development process is to find the functional definition and configuration of safety equipment that addresses both safety and productivity when taking into account human performance variability. In doing so, a balance between productivity and safety is found in a relativistic sense. IntroductionIn any system life-cycle, two major phases exist, namely system acquisition and operation (including maintenance). A distinction is made between acquisition and procurement, where acquisition includes system development and integration as specific engineering activities. In the development phase of a new system, conceptual design, preliminary design, and detail design phases follow in this order to define a complete system, after which the system is put into production and implemented in an operational environment—these activities chronologically define system acquisition in the context of this paper. It is not uncommon that differences exist between the risk management perspective during acquisition of a system and risk management perspective during operation, where nontechnical aspects are often ignored during acquisition, but are then encountered and found to be problematic during operation (Leveson, 2012). These differences also exist in the mining industry."

The estimation of some properties of South African coals from proximate analyses by J. W. de KOCK, Pr. Eng., Ph.D. (Chem. Eng.) Cantab. (Fellow) and J-P. FRANZIDIS, B.Sc. (Chem. Eng.) (Visitor) Correlations have been obtained whereby calorific values, ultimate analyses, and Hardgrove Indices can be estimated from proximate analyses of South African coals. This has been done by the application of stepwise multiple linear-regression analyses of a mass of data published by the Fuel Research Institute.

SYNOPSIS The paper opens with brief descriptions of the history, occurrence, and regional geology of South Afri¬can zinc deposits, and follows with descriptions of the resources, mining methods, and processes for the concentration of the sulphide minerals and the extraction of zinc as practised in South Africa. The end uses in the form of alloys or as salts are given in some detail. Statistics on the production and consumption of zinc in South Africa are given, and the current market situation and future prospects are discussed briefly.

Measurements of the rates of penetration at various throttle air pressures are presented as a function of thrust for three different rockdrills when drilling quartzites with strengths of 45 000 lb/in2 and 39 000 lb/in2, The rate of penetration at optimum thrust is shown to agree well with the predictions of theory and curves of air consumption as a function of throttle air pressure are presented. Man-held machines are shown to be under-thrusted at throttle air pressures above 40 lb/in2g. Measurements of bit wear as a function of distance drilled are presented graphically and discussed in terms of the theory developed in Part 1.
