Al forward sales are made on the spot market, and are counter productive because they can only lower the price of gold, as one would expect from any additional supply of gold. Hedging against any further fall in the price of gold can be carried out on one of the World's Futures Exchanges in the same way as other commodities.

Vanadium slag production in the shaking ladles started in April 1968, steelmaking was begun in July 1968 and the first continuously cast blocks were produced soon after on the 29th July, 1968. Nominal monthly production of over 20 000 tons was reached in seven months and by December 1970 about 12 000 heats were cast and a monthly production of 35000 tons has been achieved.

Conventional mining is an excellent match of mining method and equipment. The result is guaranteed performance. Change in the form of different technology requires change in mining method until the best match is achieved. This paper covers the development of technology and mining method that has occurred in the last five years to arrive at the objective of successful mechanized mining in narrow reef platinum deposits of the Bushveld Complex.

The South African socio-economic history started with pastoral and agrarian communities which had low levels of industrialization and small needs for energy. The discovery of diamonds (in the Northern Cape in 1867) and of gold (in the Transvaal in 1886) heralded economic and industrial development, with a concomitant demand for energy. The energy needs of the fledgling mines, and mining towns, were met by the combustion of wood, cut locally, or by coal, hauled laboriously from the primitive collieries, and sold to the mining companies and townships at high prices.

This paper presents an overview of the research that has been carried out to improve the understanding of the fracture processes occurring in rock under high levels of stress. The onset and growth of fractures are studied by means of laboratory model testing, and the results obtained are used in the calibration and validation of the numerical model DIGS, which is based on displacement discontinuity. The results obtained so far have shown that, while there are overall similarities between the experimental results and the numerical simulations, improvements to the experimental procedures and the DIGS are required for a detailed mechanistic understanding of shear-band orientations and extension fractures.

A total system for the simultaneous management of various projects is presented. The objectives of the present organizational structure of the Coal Division in respect of projects are listed, as are the requirements for effective functioning of this organization. The processes involved in strategic planning and in the identification. evaluation, and development of projects are described. The monitoring and control of capital as well as project construction and production management. are discussed. Finally, the important role of project work in the development of management is stated, and the necessity for the continual assessment of the effectiveness of the project organization is stressed.

The transportation, by water that flows through a pipeline, of coals in the form of water-impermeable cylinders is discussed, and shown to have distinct advantages over other forms of coal transportation, including significantly reduced costs for larger throughputs. The description of the concept comprises various aspects of the system, such as methods for the manufacture of coal logs, their injection into the pipeline, the manner in which they are conveyed in the water in the pipe, and the methods used for their preparation as feed material to electric power stations at the end of the pipeline. It is pointed out that the technology involved in the transportation of coal in the form of logs via pipelines is applicable also to other minerals and commodities.

This paper illustrates the application of numerical modeling methods, in conjunction with limit-equilibrium techniques, to the location of critical slip surfaces in slope-stability problems. Initially, the Spencer slice-based method of analysis is introduced, together with a dynamic-programming algorithm for slip-surface location. This limit-equilibrium method is assessed critically through the use of an illustrative problem. The technique is then extended to locate the critical slip surface for a similar slope, but with more complex constitutive and yield relationships for the material comprising the slope. To this end, the use of the stress field generated from a finite-difference program, together with a dynamic-programming search routine, is presented as an advanced technique of slope-stability analysis for engineers.

A mathematical model has been developed for flotation circuit simulation. This model was designed to investigate the effect of varying the circulating loads and to determine whether an improvement in overall efficiency could be gained by a size separation prior to flotation. Model parameters were obtained by regression to plant data. Highly correlated parameters in the model were combined to reduce the number of parameters so that the need for excessive data gathering was eliminated. Mass balance smoothing was used to obtain a consistent data set for regression. The results of the simulation indicate that for the same grade of concentrate, an increase in copper recovery of 0.6 per cent may be possible by increasing the circulating loads. The results of the simulation also indicated that recleaning of the plus 200-mesh material may be beneficial.

This paper discusses the concentrations of sulphides and total sulphur in widely spread regions around mine residue deposits, from which rain-water run-of can enter the Vaal River system. Analyses of borehole samples from several deposits are used to establish typical sulphur head grades. It is shown that a high percentage of al the oxidizable, and hence leachable and pollution-causing, sulphur has already been removed. When the residues were fresh, water that came from the deposits was highly polluted, but the dissolved solids from these residues are today of very minor significance. The data are supported by analyses of the drainage streams.

A high proportion of damaging rockbursts are thought to be underlain by seismic events that represent shear or rupture along planes of weakness (faults, joints, dyke contacts). Such events are controlled by shear stresses and friction properties along the plane. Excess shear stress (ESS) is a measure that can be evaluated numerically and that, in principle, can be used in an assessment of the possible magnitude and relative likelihood of seismic activity. Methods for the calculation of ESS in practical mining contexts, and for the estimation of the magnitudes of possible seismic event progressions, are briefly reviewed. The effects of variables such as depth, stoping width and, in particular, virgin horizontal stresses on general shear-type seismic hazards are investigated. Attempted back-analyses of two large rockbursts are described.

Two column flotation cells have been installed as single-stage rougher cleaners at Batu Hijau. The objective was to provide additional residence time in the cleaner circuit to maintain maximum recovery during high mill throughput and high feed grade periods. Installation of the columns has allowed the relatively coarse, well-liberated rougher concentrate and the relatively fine, low-grade scavenger concentrate to be treated separately, improving metallurgical performance in the cleaner circuit. Plant results show that the columns produce a high-grade concentrate at an average stage copper recovery of approximately 80 per cent. There is also indication of increases in both overall plant copper recovery and final concentrate copper grade. In addition, the operability and stability of the cleaner circuit has greatly improved.

The principal objectives of a metallurgical test programme for a 'grass roots' mining project are twofold. The first requirement is to establish the metallurgical viability of the project by demonstrating that acceptable results can be obtained by processing of the ore. The second goal is to obtain essential supporting data to determine whether the project is economically feasible. This involves several functions, which include the establishment of a workable flowsheet, the obtaining of design criteria for the commercial plant, and the collection of the evidence necessary to convince management, and often a third-party expert, that the metallurgy predicted for the ore can be achieved in a full-scale operation. The latter task is facilitated if a coherent overall picture is presented considering the geology of the orebody, the mining plan, and the mineralogy and metallurgy of the ore. The purpose of this paper is to provide guidance in the establishment of a test programme to meet the above objectives.

The work described in this paper is an attempt to increase present-day knowledge of fatigue in mine hoisting cables, particularly the internal energy loss arising from interwire/strand friction in a cable undergoing periodic non-planar transverse vibration. Such frictional energy loss is known to be one of the major influences limiting useful working life of hoisting cables in use today, and is responsible for the large capital outlay required to maintain the high safety factors prescribed by the mining industry. The experimental method employed identifies two mechanical characteristics of cables that are independent of amplitude and frequency, and are primarily attributed to the type of cable construction. Interest is focused the time rate of change of curvature as the major parameter influencing the internal damping mechanism. Empirical results confirm that amplitude and mode number play an important role in quantifying the internal losses, and also reveal that a critical radius of curvature exists below which damage due to vibration fatigue rises exponentialy to potentially high levels.

The integration of various highly sophisticated IT applications has been implemented at Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine, a new platinum mine in the Anglo Platinum Group. This system is required to assist with compiling the necessary geological and grade information together with safety, environmental, ventilation, rock engineering and logistical constraints, to allow the design of the appropriate mining layout, to schedule this design, provide the necessary output for technical review and costing as well as budgeting to allow medium- and long-term business planning. In addition the production management and short-term planning needs must be met. This includes the plotting of all underground and surface infrastructure and excavations, giving the necessary mining and best cut instructions, daily production management, ore reserve and grade management as well as assisting with budgetary management. In addition all safety, health, environment and risk assessment requirements and legal requirements have to be met. The system at Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine has met these criteria. The chemistry related to the adsorption of gold, uranium, and transition-metal ions onto algal biomass (activated carbon) is related to the genesis of the Witwatersrand. Detrital gold being washed into the early basin, together with cyanide generated in the atmosphere, would have solubilized as the stable aurocyanide complex, the necessary oxygen being produced from the photosynthesis of carbon dioxide by primitive algae. Pebble-type conglomerates, while providing for the free movement of solutions containing the vital nutrients for prolific algal growth, would have screened of the sunlight, which would otherwise have degraded any free cyanide in solution. With the subsequent decomposition of the algal deposits, it is surmised that carbon-rich layers having adsorptive properties similar to those of activated carbon formed in the conglomerates. Under these conditions, gold (silver) in solution would have been adsorbed selectively as the cyanide complex, together with uranium as the carbonate complex. Any transition-metal ions present would also have been adsorbed onto such a substrate. The subsequent burial and compression of the gold-rich conglomerate with temperatures rising to about 400DC would then have reduced the adsorbed gold to the metal in a single segregated gold-silver metal phase (95 to 99 per cent of the contained gold), while leaving behind a sulphide phase rich in iron, base metals, and arsenic and containing some gold and silver. The recrystalization of this later phase may explain the presence of the rather consistent contents of secondary pyrite in the Witwatersrand conglomerates. Similarly, uranium minerals, some rich in titanium and carbon, may also have formed. An adsorption model would explain the very consistent trends in the gold-to-silver ratios of individual reefs in the Witwatersrand, which suggest an extensive hydrothermal system approaching isothermal equilibrium. Also, as gold grades increase, so silver grades generally decrease, indicating the sequential displacement of silver by gold as classically obtained with activated carbon.

A study on slag dispersion in a model of bottom-blown bath smelting converter was undertaken at room temperature. The aim was to investigate the behaviour of the dispersed slag phase at various operating conditions with very high gas flow rates in low slag volume (10%) systems. For simulation purposes water, paraffin-oil, and air were used to represent the bulk steel, molten slag, and gases respectively in a one-fifth cold model of the commercial 100 t Creusot-Loire-Uddeholm (CLU) converter used in the manufacture of stainless steel in South Africa. Dimensional analysis was done to correlate mathematically the dispersed phase holdup with the operating conditions and the modified Froude number. The overall expression of the holdup revealed that the dispersed slag phase decreased with the vertical distance from the original interface between the liquid phases. The dispersed phase also decreased with the radial distance in the water plume zone toward the sidewall. The holdup was apparently much higher on the side of the reactor where there were no tuyeres. The modified Froude number ensured the correlation between the model and the prototype.

INFACON XI has no doubt earned the distinction as the first such Congress in India. This prestigious occasion could become a reality of a long cherished dream of the Indian Ferroalloy Producers, consumers and ex-porters. The International Committee of Ferro Alloys (ICFA), South Africa, the august body for organising INFACON, every three years, could be convinced by the Indian Ferro Alloy Producers? Association (IFAPA) to award INFACON (XI) to India. This Congresss, organized by IFAPA, has opened a window for the Ferroalloy Community of India, the up-coming Asian Tiger, to register their strength and weakness to the world forum with the principal objectives of evolving long and short-term optimum road-maps for development. It is to be reckoned that India is poised to be a steel giant by 2020 when it is envisaged that the steel production may reach a level of 120 million tons of which significant proportion has to be in the categories of alloy and special steels, requiring standard and high grade ferroalloys. Keeping the above objective in view, the theme of this Congress has been rightfully designed as ?Innovations in Ferro Alloy Industry.? This Congress has also earned a distinction of more than eighty papers, finally selected for inclusion in the Proceedings. More than 100 internationally and nationally reputed experts in the field of ferroalloys (technology and manufacturing practices as well as world scenario) have been approached for critical review of abstracts and selection for the proceedings. It needs to be mentioned without the cooperation received from ICFA the high standard of INFACON could not have been assured. The papers are suitably grouped under seventeen heads, starting from world situation to production and operation followed by present and future technologies and finally to modelling and simulation. It is a Herculean task to the Technical Committee to fit these papers in proper sequence. The Commit-tee members kept no stone unturned to ensure the cogency with the subject matters and at the same timekeeping the flexibility of interests of the participant, especially in the context of three parallel sessions. The Proceedings containing only refereed papers of high quality, will serve the entire gamut of ferroalloy industry and will also highlight the present status of concerned countries. The areas of attention to make the industries globally competitive and at the same time laying emphasis on the prevailing practices, will help the industry leaders to formulate an appropriate global approach. Following the break-through step, instilled by INFACON XI, the Proceedings will be available both in bound and in searchable electronic CD-ROM format. I, as the Chairman of the Technical Committee would like to express thanks and high appreciation to all the Committee members for their whole hearted efforts in all respects without which it would not have been possible to complete these proceedings in the scheduled time. Technical Committee desires to place on record their gratitude to Organising Committee for their synergic cooperation all through in successfully executing multifarious tasks, associated with such a grand international technical Congress.
