The kinetics of the non-oxidative dissolution in acids ofthe iron sulphides FeS, Fe-FeS, and Fe9S10 were studied by the use of rotating-disc electrodes of the various compounds. It was found that the rates of dissolution vary by orders of magnitude with changes in surface potential. The dissolution rates depend on non-integral orders of hydrogen-ion concentration, which in turn vary with potential. A mechanism based on the following premises is proposed to explain the kinetics of dissolution of the iron sulphides. (I) Only an FeS compound that is exactly stoichiometric dissolves in accordance with the accepted theory of ionic charge transfer. (2) Any non-stoichiometric iron-deficient iron sulphides must be reduced to exactly stoichiometric FeS before spontaneous non-oxidative dissolution can occur. The dissolution of Fe.S1o and slightly iron-deficient FeS compounds under open-circuit conditions occurs only when an oxidation reaction (usually the oxidation of hydrogen sulphide to elemental sulphur) can provide the electrons necessary for the production of exactly stoichiometric FeS. The establishment of such a mixed-potential system is the reason for the induction period that occurs during the dissolution of pyrrhotites in acids.

The flotation of sulfide ores that contain carbonaceous gangue requires significant operational and chemical intervention to achieve suitable metallurgical outcomes. Carbonaceous gangue dilutes concentrate grades, alters the froth behaviour, reduces operational stability, adsorbs reagents, and reduces value recovery. Carbon management processing strategies like preflotation and depression are often presented as point solutions. Moreover, oversimplified mechanisms of carbon depressants belie their complex and nuanced impact on flotation behaviour. Optimising the flotation of carbonaceous sulfide ores requires a holistic consideration of interactions between the carbon management reagents and the processing strategy, ore mineralogy, flotation behaviour, flowsheet, and all other aspects of the flotation system. Examples are shown where conventional, simplistic mechanisms of carbon depressants fail to explain the observed flotation behaviour. The multifaceted impacts of carbon depressants on froth behaviour, collector performance, and value recovery highlight the need for a holistic approach to carbon management. The copper tankhouse at Rustenburg Base Metals Refinery is an essential component of the Anglo American Platinum value chain. The tankhouse uses starter-sheet technology that was adopted in the 1980s, so dependence on manually intensive labour and overall operational excellence has a significant impact on process performance. An efficient, stable, and sustainable electrowinning process contributes to minimising energy consumption and reducing operational costs, and enables improved product quality and increased throughput. Historic performance of this tankhouse has often been suboptimum over prolonged periods. An in-depth operational review of performance from 2018–2024 was carried out to understand challenges, risks, and high-impact factors that contribute to poor performance. Implementation of adherence to fundamental operational basics identified from global best practice, such as the frequency and quality of cell cleaning and maintenance, preventing backlogged harvesting or maintenance, preserving cell-top furniture conditions and integrity of electrodes, preventing short circuits and poor current distribution, and maintaining a high level of operational discipline, has since contributed to an era of exceptional performance. Root-cause analysis fault trees pertaining to poor current efficiency and high scrap rate are summarised. Current efficiency has significantly improved since 2021, now consistently exceeding 88%. The copper scrap rate, previously believed to be limited to a minimum of 4%, achieved a historic monthly low record of 2.06% in 2023. Chemical and physical quality has considerably improved, and cathodes exhibit minimal morphological defects.

Aluminium alloys have gained popularity in many industries due to their high strength and low weight. One shortcoming of aluminium alloys is their poor resistance to abrasion and erosion wear compared to materials such as stainless steels. In this project, aluminium alloy 2014 (AA2014) was coated with a 1.5 mm thick laser-deposited layer composed of silicon, copper, and aluminium with the aim of increasing the wear resistance. The amount of silicon, copper, and aluminium added to each sample was determined by a mixtures model. It was discovered that the Al-Cu system is very sensitive to silicon additions and that wear resistance depends on the primary phase to solidify as well as on the final phase distribution. Two primary phases were identified; alpha aluminium and theta intermetallic. It was observed that the clad layer increases both the hardness and wear resistance of AA2014, and that the material solidifying as primary alpha aluminium displayed a lower hardness but higher wear resistance than the samples containing primary theta phase. All clad layers performed better in terms of wear resistance than the unclad samples. The knowledge gained and principles used in this project could be applied to many other aluminium alloys.

"The complex planning required to achieve any planned production yields multiple and dissociated responses over the life of project (LOP). The customary decision-making process negates the possibilities of developing optimized and integral solutions from operating levels up to business and strategic levels. This results in an inefficient project or overall underperformance of the operation.In the project setting, disconnected trade-offs and improved performance studies become inadequate, because they are site-specific and use only a few comparative parameters. They are often based on a small data-set.Decisions taken to achieve overall objectives require the correct determination and dissemination of key performance indicators (KPIs). The KPIs indicate efficiency in operation, whereby the marginal rate of technical substitution corresponds to the rate of production. It is the necessary condition for optimization. Performance realization for sustainability follows optimization modelling, the latter often being presented with financial results such as business net present value (NPV). It considers techno-financial constraints and provides a strategic and aligned outlook of KPI decisions for an enhanced and integrated outcome.This paper explains a mining case study that is rendered efficient, and through business optimization (BO) short-term and sustainable targets are reached. Business optimization increases the NPV by 14.7%. This is achieved by challenging conventional decision-making associated with maximizing business value by including environmental externalities within the LOP."

"One of the most important performance indicators of a dense medium cyclone (DMC) circuit is the Tromp curve, and by extension the separation density and Ecart Probable (Ep) values. The densimetric profiles of DMC product streams have been traditionally acquired using heavy liquid sinkfloat analysis, which has certain disadvantages, such as the associated safety and health risks. More recently, non-toxic media such as lithium hetero-polytungstates (LST) have been used, with the desired densities being achieved by maintaining the solutions at specific temperatures. However, the high costs of these liquids can be prohibitive. The long turnaround time of the sink-float analysis is a further disadvantage for timeous interventions to the operating set-points of the DMC process.The RhoVol technology can generate the density distribution of a batch of particles in a rapid, accurate, repeatable, and safe manner. Additional data of interest, such as particle size and shape, are also measured and reported on a per-particle basis. Furthermore, samples can be sorted into discrete sorting bins based on any of the measured parameters of the particle, making further analyses of the material possible.This technology has applications across all commodities that use the DMC, particularly in the size fractions –25 +8 mm and –8 +3 mm. To date, laboratory results have proved very encouraging – separation densities are within 5% of traditional sink-float results, and the technology is being introduced to diamond DMC plants. IntroductionDense medium separation is a commonly applied beneficiation technique for the density separation of valuable products from crushed ores. The industrial applications of dense medium separation have been summarized and reviewed by various authors (Scott and Napier-Munn, 2000; Bosman, 2014; Napier- Munn, 2018). Dense medium cyclones (DMCs) are widely used in the coal and diamond industries to produce clean coal or to preconcentrate kimberlitic ores, respectively. Cyclone performance (separation density monitoring) techniques are varied. In the mineral industry. Density tracer tests (Napier- Munn, 1985, 2014; Davis, Wood, and Lyman, 1985) without mineral material, are widely used, although their accuracy in predicting operating cut-points becomes limited once mineral material is introduced. More recently, radio frequency tracers have been also used for the determination of cyclone efficiency (Partition Enterprises, 2017)."

Empirical pillar design methods are commonly used in the mining industry. The parameters within which these methods are valid are frequently unknown to the user or ignored. In addition, empirical design may not consider essential parameters such as blasting effects, orebody dip and the presence of geological structures, which all adversely affect the stability of the pillars. This can result in potentially serious pillar design strength over-estimates. Although the commonly based tributary area method is generally conservative, as the spans are seldom that large relative to the depth, failing to consider other relevant parameters can result in errors. Problems associated with an under-designed pillar can range from a local pillar collapse to a catastrophic chain reaction collapse (or run). Over-designed pillars are generally safe but reduce the extraction of the orebody, thus adversely affecting the profitability of the mining operation. We used laboratory tests and numerical modelling to understand the effects of pillar orientation, blasting and the presence of discontinuities on pillar strength. Reduction factors were developed with these models to be implemented in conjunction with the existing empirical pillar design methods. For any pillar or mine design, once it is implemented, the actual performance of the system must be checked regularly by observation and monitoring and adjusted if needed. The pillar design approach outlined in this paper can better optimize the pillar mining method by considering other generally ignored but important parameters, thus improving safety, productivity, and economic aspects.

Sibanye-Stillwater recently completed a partial sidewall rebuild on Furnace 1 at its Marikana smelter complex. The project involved matte taphole maintenance, which required the removal and subsequent replacement of 18 composite copper-graphite coolers and a section of the lower refractory sidewall. These composite copper-graphite coolers are a newly developed cooling design by Tenova Pyromet, and this rebuild project provided valuable insight into the performance of the composite coolers. The novel composite cooler design was implemented to serve as a safeguard against localised wear and corrosion in the furnace sidewall, particularly at the slag-concentrate interface, where chloride-accelerated sulphidation has been identified as a dominant degradation mechanism affecting the copper cooling elements. The composite cooler design is unique in that all the exposed sides of the water-cooled copper elements are fully encapsulated in graphite, which protects the copper from corrosive sulphur- and chlorinebearing gases and condensates. This sidewall cooling system was designed to improve corrosion resistance, stabilise freeze lining formation, and extend the campaign life of the furnace sidewall. The partial sidewall rebuild was executed during a planned maintenance shutdown with the main objective of replacing the matte taphole lintel bricks. This paper serves as a case study that compares and evaluates the operational performance of the composite coolers before and after the rebuild. The installation method is discussed to highlight the approach taken to ensure a sound installation while minimising downtime, as well as to present some lessons learned in the process.

The paper summarizes the current state of development of simulation models for SAG and FAG mills, and gives the results of recent investigations of the physical processes occurring in autogenous grinding. The breakage process is treated as the sum of three regions of breakage actions: normal breakage caused by nipping of particles between media (steel balls or pebbles); abnormal breakage caused by media when the particle or lump is too big in relation to the media to be readily nipped; and self-breakage resulting from the chip¬ping fracture and abrasion of the tumbling action of rock lumps. Each region of breakage action has associated specific rates of breakage and primary progeny fragment distributions. A simplified form of the model was used to predict the performance of an 8 m diameter SAG mill with L/D = 0.5 grinding a copper ore, and predicted maximum capacity and minimum kWh/ton at about 6% ball load at 25% total filling. Two FAG mills of L/D = 2 were necessary to give the same capacity, and the simulations indicated a lower kWh/ton for these mills. For this ore, both systems were technically feasible.

The paper reviews the restrictions imposed by the Department of Mines (now the Department of Mineral and Energy Affairs) on the surface use of ground that has been undermined at shallow depths (down to a depth of244m). The reasons for the restrictions are discussed, with special reference to the early records kept by the Department of Mines on subsidence and fracture of the surface. A discussion of the nature of the strata overlying the ore-body, and the effect of undermining, is followed by a detailed account of investigational work, particularly since 1970, on the stability of shallowly undermined ground. The significance of the data collected during the investigations is considered next, with special reference to the social and economic implications. These are so farreaching, that it is proposed that the already flexible approach of the Department of Mineral and Energy Affairs in considering what structures may be built on undermined ground should become even more flexible. To this end, the appointment of a Commission is proposed to collect as much information as possible on the stability of ground undermined at shallow depth, and to revise the current overrestrictive conditions or guide lines that are in use.

The pipeline transport of paste, backfill or thickened tailings slurries is an important component of the tailings disposal process in many mines around the world. These mixtures contain significant fractions of fine (clay) and coarse (sand) particles, causing them to exhibit non-Newtonian flow behaviour and high frictional pressure gradients. There is often economic incentive to operate these pipelines in the laminar flow regime. Irrefutable evidence has shown that coarse particle settling can occur during the laminar flow of these slurries even when static settling tests show no indication of such behaviour. Previously, a ?rule-of-thumb? minimum frictional pressure gradient of ~1.5 to 2 kPa/m was suggested to ensure effective sand transport, based on the results of tests conducted using viscous Newtonian oils. In this paper, we examine the results of laminar flow tests of non-Newtonian, coarse-particle laden slurries conducted with pipeline loops of 50, 100, 150 and 250 mm in diameter. The results indicate that the ratio of the mean wall shear stress to the mean surficial particle stress is abetter indicator of laminar flow settling tendency than frictional pressure gradient.

Some of the important properties of solid electrolytes that influence the performance of electrochemical oxygen probes are discussed in the first part of this paper. It is shown that accurate and reproducible measurements of oxygen in liquid steel are possible with commercial oxygen probes only if great care is exercised in the make-up of the chemical and phase composition, as well as the microstructure of the solid electrolytes used in these probes. To prove this premise, the second part of this study reports on the results of an experimental evaluation of new commercially available oxygen probe. An evaluation of the solid electrolytes used in this probe indicated that the consistency of the chemical composition, degree of stabilization, and microstructure of the electrolytes used are well controlled. The successful application of this particular oxygen probe under industrial conditions was confirmed. It was also found possible to make reliable and reproducible measurements, with acceptable uncertainty, by proper handling of the probe. Some recommendations are made as to the interpretation of the e.m.f. response curve and the use of the electronic processing unit supplied with the probe.

Since their introduction in 2010, paddled energy-absorbing rockbolts have been widely used in seismically active hard rock mines. This paper provides new data and reviews previous work to quantify the performance of paddled energy-absorbing rockbolts under controlled laboratory conditions. Of significance is the realization that the typical split location in impact tests, at the centre between two paddle anchor points can at best provide an upper limit value. This inherent variability in performance under different testing configurations should be acknowledged and taken into consideration in the design of ground support in seismic conditions. This paper discusses the reduction in capacity of paddled rockbolts as a function of loading angle from a maximum value during axial tests (0° loading angle) to the lowest value during pure shear (loading angle of 90°). A significant reduction in displacement capacity is observed as the loading angle changes between axial (0°) and 40°. Beyond a 40° loading angle up to shear (90°) loading the reduction in displacement capacity is less significant. Due to the variances in the capacity observed through the variance of the testing configuration: loading mechanism, direction of loading, location / presence of a discontinuity, it must be recognized that results from laboratory-based testing are not independent of the testing configuration. This should be acknowledged when extrapolating anticipated performance in the field.

"This paper provides a progress update on three tapblock monitoring technologies that Hatch has been developing with our clients for non-ferrous smelting furnaces.The Tapblock Diagnostic System (TDS) is an advanced on-line monitoring system that uses temperature data along with embedded thermal model results to evaluate the condition of a tapblock over its campaign life. Hatch recently installed a second Tapblock Diagnostic System, some details of which are provided in this paper.The Tap-hole Acoustic Monitoring (TAM) system is installed on water-cooled copper tapblocks and uses the noise from the tapping channel to provide a qualitative indication of wear and deterioration of the tapping channel refractory. In addition, TAM can be used to monitor drilling and lancing performance, and potentially could also be used in the future as a guide for automatic drilling and lancing systems (Sadri et al., 2008).The third technology is the use of fibre optic sensors to measure temperature on the hot face and in the tapping channel of a tapblock. Fibre optic technology allows installation of numerous sensors in key locations where they are very sensitive to tapblock condition and also provide more extensive spatial coverage than is possible with traditional instruments. This paper provides an update on our efforts to address issues with premature failure of the sensor cables due to corrosion, and also converting the vast amount of data from the sensor cable into information that can be used by furnace operators."

Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook, published a book titled 'Lean In', where she invites women to sit at the table. In summary, to 'sit at the table' entails not only embracing opportunity, but to actively seek out opportunities in leadership positions. Sandberg points out that, unfortunately, apart from institutional obstacles, a woman's own perceived limitations have a negative impact on her leadership ambitions. To create an environment where diversity will flourish, where everyone has a seat at the table and everyone has a voice, safety must be established first. To establish safety within a diverse team, there is power in relationships and connections. This study will first and foremost review theories in literature as to why diversity and inclusion are so important and the value that diversity brings to our industry. The study also recommends a few focus areas for improving diversity and inclusion in the industry.

The traditional vertical transportation systems deliver both gangue and useful mineral. The extraction of the desired minerals requires the construction of mineral processing and waste management plants, driving production costs, and often creating a negative environmental impact. The proposed technology is an integration of mineral processing within the transportation system. The mined rock is crushed and then loaded into a vertical lifting system filled with heavy media, with an intermediate density between the mineral and the waste rock. Driven by gravity separation, the desired mineral floats to the earth's surface, while the waste sinks. Delivered minerals and sunk waste is extracted from the heavy media and is then regenerated to a dry state. The useful mineral should be suitable for further use, and the waste used for backfilling. Remained residues of the heavy media may be recycled and reused in the vertical transportation system. Trials of the proposed process in a pilot format have confirmed economic and environmental advantages over traditional methods of transportation and mineral processing technologies. Land rehabilitation transcends the mere establishment of vegetation across disturbed landscapes; it should be conceptualised as a specialised ecological reconstruction process. This process necessitates a long-term perspective on the success of land repurposing. It requires a continuum of inputs specified and managed by a dedicated and qualified custodian to ensure the sustained economic viability and ecological sustainability of the land. Based on the authors’ combined experience and field observations over more than five decades, they advocate for an urgent shift away from traditional land rehabilitation practices toward a paradigm centred on land capability reconstruction and active stewardship. The prevailing rehabilitation culture has overly simplified the process to a mere revegetation exercise, which is fundamentally incompatible with the comprehensive requirements for sustainable land capability. While the regulatory framework provides valuable guidance for obtaining a mine’s social license to operate, a paradigm reset is essential. Mining companies must prioritise rehabilitation quality, set achievable sustainability goals, and establish clear pathways and milestones to meet relinquishment criteria. Currently, the status quo view—a model reliant on outsourced contracting and agricultural approaches—is that mine rehabilitation is a one-time intervention rather than a complex, systemic, and long-term process. This perspective presents significant challenges, as the success of ecological interventions can only be accurately assessed over extended timeframes, often spanning decades. Shortsighted rehabilitation specifications, coupled with practitioners operating within agricultural decision frameworks, frequently overlook the necessity for integrated rehabilitation expertise and the scientific foundation essential for designing and implementing effective ecological outcomes. A lack of long-term monitoring information impedes the required adaptive management of rehabilitated systems and, therefore, delays the transition towards final land use. This short approach costs the mining industry millions annually, often without recognising the inadequacies in long-term liability mitigation and the substandard ecological success achieved. The disconnect between procurement processes, the qualifications of service providers, and the unclear pathways to relinquishment can impede successful rehabilitation outcomes, frequently undermining progress toward sustainability milestones. Unless there is a fundamental reset of the land rehabilitation culture, pursuing sustainability will remain an elusive and perhaps impossible objective. Consequently, mining companies may hesitate to fully commit to sustainable land rehabilitation practices, as the prospects for relinquishment and final closure remain uncertain at best.

It is estimated that approximately 65% of the roughly 130 million carats of diamonds mined globally per annum originate in Africa and has an annual value of US$ 8.4 billion', Many of these mines are located in remote areas of the continent where the directly affected project community's income is often well below the poverty line. Often associated with these communities are occurrences of localized over exploitation of natural resources, environmental destruction and the abundance of social ills.
